Jimmie Johnson Gets a New Crew Chief In this week’s episode of Out of the Groove, host and creator Eric Estepp takes us through all the major stories of the week, and this week, there’s a big one. Seven-time Cup champion Jimmie Johnson has cut ties with his crew chief Kevin Meendering. Replacing Meendering will be race engineer Cliff Daniels. And while Johnson’s recent performance removes all mystery as to why the change was needed, Eric takes us through all the context on what this means for Johnson and the team moving forward. 0 0 4

watkins glen preview: august 1, 2019

And while that story caused its own earthquake, there was plenty else going on in the world of NASCAR. There’s Kurt Busch and Ricky Stenhouse engaging in the world’s cringiest Twitter flame war, and the ratings are in from last weekend’s race at Pocono. Will Stenhouse and Busch ever put their phones down to settle this? And how did the second Pocono race of the season fare on television? You’ll have to watch the episode and find out!

things to watch at watkins glen ON THE ROAD (COURSE) AGAIN Watkins Glen offers a change of scenery for racers or just the second time in 2019, the Monster Energy NASCAR Cup Series is set to head to a road course. This weekend, it’s Watkins Glen International — a fast, popular, alwayschallenging 2.45-mile venue that has produced some of the series’ more entertaining races in recent years. Here are five things to watch for in Sunday afternoon’s GoBowling at The Glen.

Some Scores To Settle

M

ore than a couple of drivers left Pocono on Sunday feeling less than happy with a fellow competitor, following contact on the track. Perhaps the most ticked off of the bunch were Ricky Stenhouse Jr. and Kurt Busch, whose feud later spilled over to Twitter, where they traded cheap shots. Stenhouse, of course, has been no stranger to confrontation in recent times, having all but promised retaliation on Erik Jones after being wrecked by Jones a week earlier at New Hampshire. Also stewing in the wake of Sunday’s event at Pocono were good friends Daniel Suarez and Bubba Wallace, who engaged in a pretty intense discussion on pit road just moments after the race. While it’s likely the latter two will soon bury the hatchet in light of their personal affinity for one another, Sunday’s race on the traditionally rowdy Watkins Glen road course offers a golden opportunity for drivers to settle a score big or small.

More Denny Dominance

T

he past three weeks have been rather remarkable for Denny Hamlin and the No. 11 Joe Gibbs Racing team — and more good days could be on the not-too-distant horizon. With a victory last Sunday at Pocono that followed a heartbreakingly narrow defeat at the hands of Kevin Harvick the previous weekend at New Hampshire, Hamlin made it three top fives in a row and moreover served notice that he must be treated as a serious championship contender with the start of the Monster Energy Series playoffs just around the corner. “We’re putting ourselves in contention,” said Hamlin after winning for the third time in 2019. “We’re doing a lot of the right things. We haven’t had the speed like this since probably 2012 when we won five races. I think it’s really, really clicking well right now.” Look for Hamlin’s hot hand to continue Sunday at Watkins Glen, where he scored a victory in 2016.

A Bubble Breakout Driver

T

hings remained fairly settled around the playoff bubble in last Sunday’s race at Pocono as Jimmie Johnson continued to be the first driver on the wrong side of the cutoff but did manage to pick up five points on the final transfer driver, who is now Ryan Newman, although Newman and Clint Bowyer are actually tied in the standings. If history means anything, don’t expect Johnson to move into playoff contention at Watkins Glen — a track where he’s notably winless in 17 starts. Bowyer, though winless in 13 starts at The Glen, does have a win at Sonoma Raceway — the series’ other longstanding road course — and is considered one of NASCAR’s better overall road course racers. Sunday’s race at The Glen, therefore, provides a good opportunity for Bowyer to potentially put some distance on both Johnson and Newman, the latter of whom is 0-for-36 in career road course outings as a Monster Energy NASCAR Cup Series driver.

The Beginning Of The Johnson/Daniels Era

A

fter spending his entire career with Chad Knaus as his crew chief, Jimmie Johnson began 2019 with a new face atop his pit box in Kevin Meendering. The pairing failed to yield much fruit, however, as Johnson scored only three top-five finishes — and no wins — in 21 starts. So, with five races left before the playoffs and Johnson on the wrong side of the playoff cutline, Hendrick Motorsports announced this week that Cliff Daniels has replaced Meendering as crew chief on the No. 48 team, effective immediately. Daniels’ first race in his new role will be Sunday at Watkins Glen. Daniels, 31, won the 2016 championship as Johnson’s race engineer after joining the No. 48 team in December 2014. He moved into Hendrick Motorsports’ competition systems group following the 2018 season and rejoined the No. 48 team as race engineer in June. “He will bring the spark that’s been our missing ingredient,” team owner Rick Hendrick said.

Chase Elliott’s Bid For A Watkins Glen Repeat

T

his weekend marks the one-year anniversary of Chase Elliott’s first career Monster Energy NASCAR Cup Series victory. Will the second-generation driver go back-to-back at The Glen? While a second consecutive victory on the road course is certainly possible, what Elliott needs more than anything is just a good finish. The Hendrick Motorsports driver hasn’t finished in the top 10 since early June at Pocono — a stretch of seven races without a top 10. In the meantime, he’s fallen from third to eighth in the standings and been visibly frustrated at times about his struggles, which followed a streak of five consecutive top fives that included a playoff-clinching victory at Talladega. Will the site of Elliott’s first career victory last season now become the site of his 2019 turnaround? This much is certain: A poor performance on Sunday at a track where he’s the most recent winner wouldn’t bode well for the rest of his season.

By Jared Turner ▶▶ chase elliott. In earning his first career premier series victory last year at Watkins Glen, Chase Elliott didn’t just win — he dominated, leading 52 of 90 laps. Elliott has won three races since but none have been quite as special as that first triumph, which came in his 99th start. ▶▶ martin truex jr. With a victory in 2017 and a second-place finish last season, Martin Truex Jr. boasts a remarkable average finish of 1.5 in his last two trips to Watkins Glen. Expect another strong performance this weekend from Truex, who will make his first start at The Glen as part of Joe Gibbs Racing. ▶▶ denny hamlin. Riding high on the heels of a win and a secondplace finish over the past two weekends, respectively, Denny Hamlin carries more momentum into Watkins Glen than anyone. It also doesn’t hurt that he’s a past winner on the Upstate New York road course, having prevailed there in 2016. ▶▶ kyle busch. As has been the case on most weekends and at virtually every place he’s been this season, Kyle Busch should be fast and factor heavily into the mix at Watkins Glen — where he owns a pair of victories in his No. 18 Joe Gibbs Racing Toyota, the most recent coming in 2013. ▶▶ jimmie johnson. Winless in 17 starts at Watkins Glen and absent from Victory Lane altogether since June 2017, Jimmie Johnson is fighting for his playoff life. This weekend will mark a new chapter for the seven-time champ, who has a new crew chief in former Hendrick Motorsports race engineer Cliff Daniels.

O

n April 9, 2006, Kasey Kahne, driver of the No. 9 Evernham Motorsports Dodge, became the 11th winner in as many Cup series races held at Texas Motor Speedway by winning the Samsung Radio Shack 500. The Enumclaw, Wash., native was the first driver in the track’s history to win an event from the pole position. Kahne sealed the deal by leading 63 of 334 laps including the final 27 and held off Matt Kenseth of Roush Fenway Racing. He collected his third of six wins that season after building a comfortable lead after the final restart with 17 laps to go for debris. At the checkered flag, he was five seconds ahead with Tony Stewart finishing third, followed by Denny Hamlin fourth

and Kevin Harvick fifth. Each of the three victories came after winning pole positions that also occurred at Richmond and Atlanta. All told, he logged 18 victories before retiring from the Cup series in 2018. The best season of his 15year career included 12 topfives, 19 top-10s and six pole positions. “This is a great victory. It’s one of the tracks I have looked at since I started racing,” Kahne said, according to an Associated Press article. “This is a track you want to win at. This track, Indianapolis and Daytona … if you can win at one of (them), you have really done something.”

eNASCAR Takes the Spotlight on NBC The future of NASCAR America Online By: M atteo M archeschi

T

he NASCAR eSports world got a huge boost on Thursday, July 25, as the eNASCAR Peak Antifreeze iRacing Series made its national television debut on NASCAR America. JTG Daughtery driver Nick Ottinger beat FlipSid3 Tactics pilot Ryan Luza in a side-by-side finish. The non-points race, which took place at Iowa Speedway, was thrilling, with drivers working every line. That, combined with a very exciting finish, made the event the perfect introduction of iRacing as an eSport to a large TV audience. Personally, I never would have watched that episode of NASCAR America if

0 2 8

watkins glen preview: august 1, 2019

not for the race, and the social media coverage was fairly widespread, with tweets from plenty of high-profile figures shouting out the event. Overall, the event was a huge burst of positive coverage, with plenty of people discussing it on social media. Other than a persistent timing issue with the leaderboard and NBC’s inclusion of Parker Kligerman in the race, the race was great publicity. Kligerman made it clear he shouldn’t have been out there. After winning the pole, he plummeted through the field, eventually finishing 31st after taking out Roush-Fenway

NASCAR eSports Racing’s Michael Guest. While Kligerman’s inrace reports were valuable to the broadcast, a Peak driver would have been more qualified to be an in-race reporter, just like the usual national series races. The missing aspects of Twitch and YouTube did catch my attention, though, as I’m used to being able to chat with the Peak audience on a weekly basis. NASCAR coverage could seriously benefit from a Twitch-style chatroom native to its broadcasts. Obviously not on the actual TV broadcasts, but they could host chatrooms through the NBC and FOX mobile apps, where users can use their cable logins to watch the broadcasts on the go. NASCAR could even make a deal with Twitch and/or YouTube to livestream their races, and users would be able to watch

0 3 0

watkins glen preview: august 1, 2019

and chat there. Not only would that open up the sport to a wider audience, the move would make it more accessible to its already-existing audience. Unfortunately, it would also severely devalue any new TV deals signed in the coming years. The internet, though, is the future, and streaming sites would likely be all over signing the largest spectator sport in America to a deal. Big TV money has helped NASCAR in the past, but if it wants to stay relevant, it needs to make a deal with a streaming service, or even build its own. The eNASCAR Peak Antifreeze iRacing Series will appear on NASCAR America on the last Thursday of every month from August to November at 5 PM eastern time on NBCSN.

Racing in 2015 produced his second major championship in four years. Buescher made his NASCAR Cup Series debut in 2015 and he became a series regular the following season. His lone Cup Series victory came on a strategy call at Pocono Raceway during his rookie campaign. Away from the race track, Buescher enjoys fishing, riding ATVs, watching moves and doing fabrication work.

fter capturing the NASCAR Xfinity Series championship in 2015, Chris Buescher joined Chase Elliott and Denny Hamlin as the only drivers to qualify for the Monster Energy NASCAR Cup Series playoffs during their rookie seasons. Now 26 years old and in his fourth full year of racing in the NASCAR premier series, Buescher is battling to join the postseason party for the second time as he wheels the No. 37 Chevrolet Camaro for the JTG Daugherty Racing. Born Oct. 29, 1992, the native of Prosper, Texas, began racing motorcycles at age 6. He soon graduated to Bandoleros and was a Legend Car Pro division feature winner at the age of 13. His meteoric rise through the racing ranks included time in Late Models and ASA Speed Trucks before he went to Victory Lane four times en route to the ARCA Menards Series championship in 2012. Two victories and 20 top-10 finishes during his sophomore season of NASCAR Xfinity Series racing with Roush Fenway

ichelle Mackey, transporter support person for Rick Ware Racing and driver Austin Theriault, grew up around drag racing alongside her parents when she was a child. It wasn’t until later while watching NASCAR events on television that she developed an interest in the sport. She attended her first Cup series event in 1996 at Dover International Speedway with family and friends. “I always wanted to move to North Carolina because my heart was into racing,” Mackey said. “How I got into actually

he Original Larry’s Hard Lemonade® dubbed “Larry’s Lemonade” was first concocted in the backyard of none other than the man himself “Larry”. This local favorite began gaining ground throughout the markets of Hampton Roads, Virginia all the way to the Outer Banks of North Carolina. After much success, excitement, and incredible growth Larry was hit with the terrible news that he had cancer. With family, friends, and his Lemon Crew beside him Larry reminded them of their company motto “When Life Handed Us Lemons, We Turned Them into Beer”. Larry took on cancer with his unrelenting “Thumbs Up” attitude and determination and beat cancer reminding us to never quit! So, whether you’re in a peak or valley of life Larry would like to remind you that “When Life Hands You Lemons, Let Larry Make The Beer.” Look for The Original Larry’s Hard Lemonade® in a store near you and check us out at www.THELARRYSLEMONADE.com

crew member profile: michelle mackey working in the sport came together after meeting Steve Church, a transporter driver in the sport for many years (and current RWR driver for the team). We became a couple in December of 2016, and it all went from there.” Mackey is not presently driving transporters for the team but is working to get her commercial driver’s license. Prior to leaving for and arriving at the track, there’s a lot of work to be do. “My job with the team is to maintain the hauler and make sure it’s clean,” Mackey said. “When we get ready to go to the track, I help load it and unload in the garage and set up our area. I make sure the coolers are stocked with

ice, counters set up, and trash is taken care of, and everything is clean and organized.” On race day, Mackey helps with a very important job on pit road. “I suit up and catch fuel cans on pit road and make sure they are refilled,” Mackey said. “The first one is pretty much empty when they throw it back to me. It’s about 20 pounds completely empty and sometimes it can be 45 pounds if there’s some left in the can. When I catch the second one it could be as much as 80 pounds depending on how much fuel gets into the car. I have a rhythm down with our gas man to make sure I don’t get hurt.”

randon Brown is running a full XFINITY Series season for his familyrun team, but the challenge is intense. The No. 86 is showing small gains each week, and Brown is inside the top 15 in the standings.

▶▶ What’s the year been like for you? “It’s been a trying season. We’ve had a lot of struggles that we didn’t know were going to be there. We predicted a couple of the struggles we would have, but there were some curveballs that have come our way. Learning how to overcome that has been our team’s greatest triumph.” ▶▶ What are some of your goals for the rest of 2019? “We still feel – I know it’s pretty far-fetched – that we can take a stab at the playoffs. We feel there are people ahead of us who we can be competitive with. That’s the goal for us and myself. I want to have some more established partnerships for the car.” 0 4 0

health and wellness

TM

msg: making racing safer By dan guttenplan

A

cknowledged as one of the country’s leading neurosurgeons, Dr. Jason Cormier has helped MSG provide a comprehensive, grassroots marketing campaign focused on preventative health care education and wellness training. With an emphasis to educate and engage race fans in their growing role as health care consumers, the objective is to influence behavioral changes, to provide racing’s brand-loyal audience with the medical knowledge to make informed, preventative decisions that directly affect the wellness of their families. As the NASCAR schedule turns to the hotter summer months, Cormier continues to stress the importance of hydration. A dehydrated athlete is unable to maintain peak levels of focus or mental health in a race car. “There are a couple of signs that heat is taking a toll on an athlete,” Cormier noted. “The driver’s reaction slows down

0 4 6

watkins glen preview: august 1, 2019

because the brain becomes dehydrated. Once they’re losing reaction time and cognitive ability, the mental ability declines and they just want to get out of the car as they continue to compete. Recognize that competing at this level, without proper hydration, creates an extremely miserable situation for the driver athlete. Drivers have reported that not only do they want the race to end, they start thinking of the last race and there’s a predictability that it’s coming on again.” A good rule of thumb for staying hydrated is to drink at least half of your body weight (measure in kilograms) in ounces of water. Cormier says that process must start days – not hours – before competition. “It should really start three days prior to a race,” he said. “They’re not camels, so they can’t just store water. People

health and wellness want to load up on vitamin water, but that has 32 grams of sugar particularly fructose. Pedialyte is not indicated as a true hydration tool. What they should be doing is staying away from carbonated drinks and processed foods, while maintaining a good balanced diet of fruits and vegetables.” Cormier believes the importance of hydration ties nicely with an undervalued aspect of performing in a race car – mental wellness. Not enough attention is paid to ensuring the drivers are getting behind the wheel in peak mental condition. Research on the effects of heat on the brain, from both Harvard and Stanford University recently revealed both an increase cognitive difficulties as well as an increase in the frequency of suicide. “We should be studying all aspects of a person’s mental condition,” Cormier said.

“When was the last episode? What was the cause? What were some other outside factors? What are they doing for self-help? They’re driving 200 mph when they have a lot of other things on their minds. They could have PTSD, bipolar diagnosis, anxiety … we don’t address that enough.” Cormier believes anyone struggling with mental health issues should surround him or herself with positive energy. “It’s also important they’re not engaging in risky behavior off the track. For example, alcohol abuse, frequenting bars or taking drugs,” he said. “Meditation is great, yoga is great, but having a positive circle around you is also great. Social media can be a positive in many ways, but we need to control that aspect of our lives. Books that are inspirational or help books can be beneficial. Those things help a great deal.”

An MSG Partner – Brain Armor Motorsports Safety Group is planning to partner with The Healthy Brain Co. on a mission to positively impact the health and wellness of the brain – 86 billion neurons at a time. Brain Armor products are clinically proven, evidencedbased nutritional formula designed for the sole purpose of building strong, healthy brains through

improved structural integrity and enhanced cognitive performance. Dr. Julian Bailes has helped design the product, which includes some of the most

watkins glen preview: august 1, 2019

researched and evidencebased ingredients on the planet: DHA and EPA Omega-3 fatty acids. “Julian Bailes did the initial studies, which broke barriers for some unexpected and very promising results,” Dr. Jason Cormier said. “The elevated dosages can help support neurons and repair certain injuries that occur in the brain. Some drivers use it; it’s utilized in the NFL, NCAA, NHL and some military as well.”

nascar PETS

Natalie Decker’s Beagle Buddies by jared turner

N

ASCAR Gander Outdoors Truck Series newcomer Natalie Decker is thankful for the opportunity this year to compete at a lot of race tracks for the first time. But when she’s at the track, she’s equally happy to have some familiar companions by her side. Those companions are an aging cat, appropriately named NASCAR, and two dogs – a black-and-brown beagle named Hoosier (after the tire), and a white beagle named Camber (after the tilt of a race car wheel). Although the pets’ permanent residence isn’t Decker’s Charlotte, North Carolina, apartment but rather her parents’ larger and more pet-friendly estate in Eagle River, Wisconsin, Decker adores these animals as if they were her own. “They’re so special, and my mom is such a dog person,” Decker said. “I think one of her dreams is to have a beagle farm and have just a bunch of beagles everywhere. My mom loves traveling with them, and it’s great because she and my dad will bring them to all the races and I get to see them every weekend. I swear they know how I do – if it’s a bad weekend or a good weekend – from the way they greet me when I come back into the motorhome after the race.” Decker’s parents also have a 14-year-old black lab named Bear and a 12-year-old Italian greyhound named Merlin. They don’t travel to the track, but Decker likewise delights in seeing them whenever she gets a chance. “I always had a beagle growing up, and when I

0 5 0

watkins glen preview: august 1, 2019

was really young, we had a Doberman Pinscher,” Decker noted. “So, there was always more than one dog in the house.” Now, as a 21-year-old NASCAR driver, Decker is as passionate about animals as ever. And, she holds an extra special place in her heart for the two beagles she can always count on to make race weekends just a little more care-free. “They’re kind of stress-relievers, and they’re so fun to play with, and they always make me happy,” she said. “They’re so cute. I mean, they’re beagles, so they bark a lot and they’re hairy, and I hate dog hair, so I have to have that little (hair) roller with me everywhere … but I love them so much.”
