Chase Elliot Does it Again at the Glen In this week’s episode of Out of the Groove, host and creator Eric Estepp brings us his review and analysis of this weekend’s Watkins Glen race. Road racing always presents a unique challenge to drivers, which can also have the effect of presenting unique winners. That’s the case with this weekend’s winner, No. 9 driver and perennial fan favorite Chase Elliot. Although Elliot led the vast majority of the race, Martin Truex, Jr. seemed always to be 0 0 4

right on his tail, right up to the heartbreaker finish, where Truex rolled in behind Elliot less than half a second behind. But there are also major playoff implications from Watkins Glen, along with Eric’s rating of the annual Go Bowling event on his patented Groovy Gauge. What does the future hold for drivers on the bubble, and how did Watkins Glen stack up against the rest of the season? You’ll have to watch the episode and find out!

Here are five important takeaways from the Go Bowling at The Glen.

The Race Is On For The Final Transfer Spot
D
espite finishing 19th at Watkins Glen, Jimmie Johnson left the Upstate New York road course in a better position to ultimately solidify a berth in the 2019 Monster Energy NASCAR Cup Series playoffs. Johnson, who had arrived at The Glen 12 points in arrears of the final transfer spot, is now tied for the position with Ryan Newman and would actually transfer in on the basis of a tiebreaker, while Newman would be the first driver out. Both Johnson and Newman trail 15thplace Clint Bowyer by 12 points and sit 23 points ahead of 18th-place Daniel Suarez. Meanwhile, one driver recently near the bubble but now in great shape to make the playoffs is Erik Jones. “We’ve done a great job this last month-and-a-half of carving our way back into it and really getting towards the top of the non-winners in the playoff picture, which is a good feeling,” said Jones, a Joe Gibbs Racing driver.

Even In Defeat, Truex Remains A Force At The Glen
F
or the second year in a row, Martin Truex Jr. attempted to run down Chase Elliott in the final laps at Watkins Glen. And for the second consecutive year, Truex was unable to do so as Elliott held on to score a popular victory. “I tried to do all I could,” Truex said. “Chase, he did an excellent job just not making mistakes. All I could do was get to within two car lengths or one-anda-half at the closest in braking. Just trying to force a mistake, but he hit his marks and his car was really fast in the key areas there where it needed to be and leaving a few of the key corners.” Truex has now finished second, second and first in his last three outings at The Glen, respectively. “We enjoy the road courses,” Truex said. “Cole (Pearn, crew chief) and all the guys really understand what I need here.”

Bubba Wallace and William Byron Aren’t Taking Any Crap
O
n Sunday at Watkins Glen, youngsters Bubba Wallace and William Byron both believed they were wrongfully booted out of the way by veteran Kyle Busch. And both made their frustration known by retaliating — Byron with a hard bump to the rear of Busch’s No. 18 car, and Wallace by spinning Busch at an opportune time. Later, Wallace offered some pointed insight into the thought process behind his decision to waste no time in evening the score with the 2015 series champ. “I’m going to get my respect on the track, and I don’t care who it is,” Wallace said. “That’s for when guys fail to think about the young guys, I guess, or me. I won’t put up with no (junk). So I flat out wrecked his ass back. I guess we’re even. We’ll see. That’s what happens when you get run over. You just pay him back. So I won’t be like, ‘Oh, it’s Kyle Busch, he didn’t mean to.’”

Jimmie Johnson Is Furious With Ryan Blaney
T
hroughout his legendary career, Jimmie Johnson has built a reputation as a driver who typically steers clear of major controversy and rarely gets into altercations with fellow competitors. But after being spun on Sunday at Watkins Glen by Ryan Blaney, Johnson later angrily confronted Blaney on pit road to express his displeasure. The seven-time champ also minced no words during a post-race interview — this after threatening to “beat (Blaney’s) (expletive)” over the No. 48 team’s in-car radio. “I tried to hear what he was trying to say (on pit road), but his lips were quivering so bad when he came to speak,” Johnson said after finishing 19th. “I don’t know if he was nervous or scared or both. He just drove through me and spun me out. … We were setting up for top-eight to top-10 and got drove through. He claims it was just racing. So I can hardly wait to go racing. Everybody stay tuned.”

Chase Has Unlocked Something At Watkins Glen
W
hat does Chase Elliott need to break out of a major slump? Apparently, just a trip to Watkins Glen International. Mired in one of the roughest patches of his young career to date, Elliott returned to frontrunner status in convincing fashion at The Glen as he made it back-to-back victories at the 2.45-mile road course. Entering the weekend on the heels of a brutal seven-race stretch that brought him nary a top-10 finish, Elliott started out strong by winning the pole. Then, in the race, the Hendrick Motorsports driver led 80 of 90 laps on the way to easily his most dominant win in NASCAR’s top series. Clearly, Elliott has discovered the secret to success at Watkins Glen, where one year earlier he qualified third and led 52 of 90 laps en route to his first ever victory in the Monster Energy NASCAR Cup Series. WGI is now the only track where Elliott has multiple wins.

Just sayin’ Matt DiBenedetto’s plans for the 2020 season are unclear despite his recent success.
Matt DiBenedetto Deserves A Cup Ride By Jared Turner
M
att DiBenedetto will probably never win a Monster Energy NASCAR Cup Series championship. Heck, he might not even ever win a race. But right now, DiBenedetto is doing something that’s darn impressive in its own right — and that is getting the absolute most that he can possibly get out of equipment that everyone knows is subpar at best. With all due respect to Leavine Family Racing, this is an organization — even with its loose technical alliance with Joe Gibbs Racing — that simply lacks the resources of the JGRs and Team Penskes and Hendrick Motorsportses of the world. In fact, even on a good day and in a good season, LFR is no better than a third-tier organization. Yet, somehow, DiBenedetto has managed to score four top10 finishes — including two top-fives — in his last seven starts. Of course, this is the same DiBenedetto who led 49 laps in this year’s Daytona 500 and had a real chance to pull off one of the biggest upsets in NASCAR history before getting caught up in one of Daytona’s all-too-familiar multicar wrecks. Yet, even with his
0 1 8
watkins glen Rearview: august 5, 2019
recent success in modest equipment, DiBenedetto faces a future that is far from certain, thanks to JGR’s desire to keep Erik Jones but find a place for Xfinity Series hot shoe Christopher Bell. At this point, all signs suggest that JGR and Toyota are going to keep Jones and basically tell Leavine Family Racing it has to give DiBenedetto’s seat to Bell, or vice versa. Either way, the odd man out would be DiBenedetto, who after a sixth-place finish on Sunday at Watkins Glen admitted to basically being on the hot seat. “I’m just fighting for my life, my career,” DiBenedetto said. Keep up the fight, Matt. NASCAR’s top series is better off with you — and underdogs like you — in it.

There’s Elliot vs Truex, of course, but also Kyle Busch vs...well, quite a few people this week, including picking a fight with the wrong guy, No. 43’s Bubba Wallace, who fought back harder than perhaps Kyle was expecting. So where does Rusty rank this race overall in the season? And what kind of playoff drama are we going to see coming out of the standings after Watkins Glen? What’s the future of PEAK? Television vs. Streaming in Esports By: M atteo M archeschi
W
ith iRacing’s national television debut behind us, it’s time to think about the next steps for iRacing and eNASCAR. Where will the Peak Series and the discipline as a whole go from here, and how can they get there? We already know the immediate next step: Four more events on NASCAR America on the last Thursday of each month from August to November. Ideally, each race rides the momentum into the next until November, and gets the general NASCAR audience interested in Peak enough to follow it on a regular basis. If NASCAR and NBC don’t see any evidence of an uptick in viewership on these NASCAR America episodes and iRacing doesn’t see an increase in Peak Series viewership following the televised races, it will likely be back to square one for both sides. However, ideally, both sides do see positive results and they begin exploring their options to cover the series further. While it may be unlikely to see the whole 2020 season on national television, it might be conceivable to see the non-points
0 2 8
watkins glen Rearview: august 5, 2019
events on a more consistent basis. Next year’s playoff races could also be televised if the momentum for the series keeps up. However, it might be a tad risky to televise these races without livestreaming them on Twitch or YouTube, since such a move might alienate Peak fans who don’t get NBCSN. Ideally, television viewers should far outweigh the impact of any lost online viewers, but NASCAR and NBC shouldn’t take any risks when it comes to their younger fans. Televising these races, or any Peak races, really, would bring a lot more money into the series, between the money NBC would pay for broadcasting rights and the money sponsors might pay to appear on the broadcast and on the cars themselves. It certainly wouldn’t be near the figures we see in the top several series of NASCAR, but it would be a huge help to grow the series. Overall, it’s hard to say what the next step for the Peak Series is, since it likely depends on viewership, but, if all goes well, these several races won’t be the end of the Peak Series on television.

As the NASCAR schedule turns to the hotter summer months, Cormier continues to stress the importance of hydration. A dehydrated athlete is unable to maintain peak levels of focus or mental health in a race car. “There are a couple of signs that heat is taking a toll on an athlete,” Cormier noted. “The driver’s reaction slows down
0 4 8
watkins glen Rearview: august 5, 2019
because the brain becomes dehydrated. Once they’re losing reaction time and cognitive ability, the mental ability declines and they just want to get out of the car as they continue to compete. Recognize that competing at this level, without proper hydration, creates an extremely miserable situation for the driver athlete. Drivers have reported that not only do they want the race to end, they start thinking of the last race and there’s a predictability that it’s coming on again.” A good rule of thumb for staying hydrated is to drink at least half of your body weight (measure in kilograms) in ounces of water. Cormier says that process must start days – not hours – before competition. “It should really start three days prior to a race,” he said. “They’re not camels, so they can’t just store water. People
health and wellness want to load up on vitamin water, but that has 32 grams of sugar particularly fructose. Pedialyte is not indicated as a true hydration tool. What they should be doing is staying away from carbonated drinks and processed foods, while maintaining a good balanced diet of fruits and vegetables.” Cormier believes the importance of hydration ties nicely with an undervalued aspect of performing in a race car – mental wellness. Not enough attention is paid to ensuring the drivers are getting behind the wheel in peak mental condition. Research on the effects of heat on the brain, from both Harvard and Stanford University recently revealed both an increase cognitive difficulties as well as an increase in the frequency of suicide. “We should be studying all aspects of a person’s mental condition,” Cormier said.
“When was the last episode? What was the cause? What were some other outside factors? What are they doing for self-help? They’re driving 200 mph when they have a lot of other things on their minds. They could have PTSD, bipolar diagnosis, anxiety … we don’t address that enough.” Cormier believes anyone struggling with mental health issues should surround him or herself with positive energy. “It’s also important they’re not engaging in risky behavior off the track. For example, alcohol abuse, frequenting bars or taking drugs,” he said. “Meditation is great, yoga is great, but having a positive circle around you is also great. Social media can be a positive in many ways, but we need to control that aspect of our lives. Books that are inspirational or help books can be beneficial. Those things help a great deal.”
An MSG Partner – Brain Armor Motorsports Safety Group is planning to partner with The Healthy Brain Co. on a mission to positively impact the health and wellness of the brain – 86 billion neurons at a time. Brain Armor products are clinically proven, evidencedbased nutritional formula designed for the sole purpose of building strong, healthy brains through

improved structural integrity and enhanced cognitive performance. Dr. Julian Bailes has helped design the product, which includes some of the most

researched and evidencebased ingredients on the planet: DHA and EPA Omega-3 fatty acids. “Julian Bailes did the initial studies, which broke barriers for some unexpected and very promising results,” Dr. Jason Cormier said. “The elevated dosages can help support neurons and repair certain injuries that occur in the brain. Some drivers use it; it’s utilized in the NFL, NCAA, NHL and some military as well.”

Natalie Decker’s Beagle Buddies by jared turner
N
ASCAR Gander Outdoors Truck Series newcomer Natalie Decker is thankful for the opportunity this year to compete at a lot of race tracks for the first time. But when she’s at the track, she’s equally happy to have some familiar companions by her side. Those companions are an aging cat, appropriately named NASCAR, and two dogs – a black-and-brown beagle named Hoosier (after the tire), and a white beagle named Camber (after the tilt of a race car wheel). Although the pets’ permanent residence isn’t Decker’s Charlotte, North Carolina, apartment but rather her parents’ larger and more pet-friendly estate in Eagle River, Wisconsin, Decker adores these animals as if they were her own. “They’re so special, and my mom is such a dog person,” Decker said. “I think one of her dreams is to have a beagle farm and have just a bunch of beagles everywhere. My mom loves traveling with them, and it’s great because she and my dad will bring them to all the races and I get to see them every weekend. I swear they know how I do – if it’s a bad weekend or a good weekend – from the way they greet me when I come back into the motorhome after the race.” Decker’s parents also have a 14-year-old black lab named Bear and a 12-year-old Italian greyhound named Merlin. They don’t travel to the track, but Decker likewise delights in seeing them whenever she gets a chance. “I always had a beagle growing up, and when I
0 5 2
watkins glen Rearview: august 5, 2019
was really young, we had a Doberman Pinscher,” Decker noted. “So, there was always more than one dog in the house.” Now, as a 21-year-old NASCAR driver, Decker is as passionate about animals as ever. And, she holds an extra special place in her heart for the two beagles she can always count on to make race weekends just a little more care-free. “They’re kind of stress-relievers, and they’re so fun to play with, and they always make me happy,” she said. “They’re so cute. I mean, they’re beagles, so they bark a lot and they’re hairy, and I hate dog hair, so I have to have that little (hair) roller with me everywhere … but I love them so much.”
