WELCOME TO THE US YOUTH SOCCER AWARDS GALA! Our Awards Gala banquet and celebration honors every aspect of our great sport: the Young Female and Male Referees of the Year, the TOPSoccer Buddy and Coach of the Year, the Volunteer of the Year, the Administrator of the Year, the Girls and Boys Recreational Coaches of the Year, the Girls and Boys Competitive Coaches of the Year, the Best Goal of the Year, the Best Save of the Year, the Dr. Thomas Fleck Award honoree and the US Youth Soccer Hall of Fame inductees. My congratulations to all of the Regional nominees and National winners. Many players would not be where they are today if it was not for your continuous commitment to this wonderful sport. We take time tonight to recognize your special contributions — through your time, energy, and effort, you have made US Youth Soccer the great youth soccer organization it is today. The Awards Gala is one of the major events of the US Youth Soccer Workshop, which we are proud to hold in conjunction with the 2022 United Soccer Coaches Convention here in Kansas City. The Gala and all of the other events and activities at the Workshop could not be a success without the valuable efforts, support, and assistance from a great many people and organizations. Our thanks and appreciation to our hosts, the Missouri Youth Soccer Association and their president, Jim McCarthy, for their support of the US Youth Soccer Workshop. All of our sponsors and partners are an integral part of US Youth Soccer. Without their support, our programs would not be as effective or prestigious as they are today. Our thanks to the following invaluable sponsors: AmericanEagle.com, A.E. Engine, Anthony Travel, Aspen Institute: Project Play, Bag Tags, Dick’s Sporting Goods, ExpandaBrand, U.S. Futsal Federation, Hospital for Special Surgery, InjureFree, Keeper Wars Ink, Major League Soccer, MOJO, Next College Student Athlete, Nike, Office of Disease Prevention and Health Promotion, NWSLPA, National Women’s Soccer League, Premier International Tours, ScoutingZone, Soccer Parenting, TiPEVO, Team IP, Trace, TrueSport, United Futsal, United Soccer Coaches, U.S. Soccer Foundation, U.S. Soccer, and Wilson Trophy Company. We are also very appreciative to the US Youth Soccer national office staff, who have worked tirelessly in handling the arrangements and organizing of the Workshop. Please let them know you are grateful for their fine efforts. Please enjoy yourselves this evening as we look back on another great year, to celebrate the countless wonderful people who continuously contribute to youth soccer around the nation. I also encourage you to take the time to experience the outstanding education and networking opportunities available this weekend. Return safely home with new knowledge and skills, new friends, fond memories, and a renewed love for the sport. Sincerely,

Dr. Pete Zopfi, Chair 2

HALL OF FAME

ADMINISTRATOR INDUCTEE DAMARCUS BEASLEY including attending IMG Academy. DaMarcus’ career blossomed as a star for the United States U-17 and U-20 teams and then the Men’s National Team where he has 126 appearances. All his hard work paid off, as he is retiring from the Major League Soccer team the Houston Dynamos this year.

F

rom DaMarcus’ early years in Ft. Wayne, he would travel long and far just to play larger, more competitive teams to challenge himself and better his skills. His coaches were always impressed by his speed and abilities on the field and knew from an early age that Demarcus would be a star.

However, DaMarcus is not done yet with the soccer community, especially the growth of youth soccer because as DaMarcus put it “it starts with our youth.” For the past four years, DaMarcus has operated a network of youth soccer camps in the Ft. Wayne area, just like the ones he went to growing up, and in his retirement, he is hoping to run even more. Although DaMarcus does not aspire to be a coach when he is at those soccer camps, he can’t help but to show and teach those kids all that he learned in his soccer career, that has made him an international star and one of the most celebrated US players of all time.

His youth success in Indiana gave him many opportunities,

Under Pat’s leadership, he and his company have participated in 135+ risk management and insurance workshops at both USYS Workshop and for State Soccer Associations. After over 40 years as an insurance professional, with the past 23 years serving the US Youth Soccer community, Pat decided to retire and begin the next chapter of his life. In May 2019, Pullen Insurance Services was acquired by K&K Insurance Group. Pat’s youngest son, Dan Pullen, joined K&K and is responsible for the management of the US Youth Soccer book of business.

ADMINISTRATOR INDUCTEE KATHY ZOLAD found their college teams. Much of Kathy’s success comes from her ability to recognize from the beginning that the world of soccer administration is dynamic and continually evolving. Thus, she has always been prepared to adapt her approach to meet new challenges and has always been driven to learn and, just as importantly, share her knowledge with the rest of the soccer community.

HALL OF FAME

ADMINISTRATOR INDUCTEE TOM MENDOTH

T

om led the implementation of a round-robin tournament for Region IV and the 14 states that it encompasses. That experience gave him great insight as to the issues involved in the singleelimination format that tournaments previously used. Tom then took that experience and helped the National Championship Committee to

begin the round-robin format to give teams more opportunity to compete in that tournament. Over his years of service to Region IV and the National Championships, the tournament has grown from a weekend event to now a week-long event. The changes in the format of the National Championship tournament are a perfect testament to the work that Tom has done. When he is given a challenge, he takes responsibility, solves the situation, and does his job well.

HALL OF FAME

ADMINISTRATOR INDUCTEE JESSE HARRELL

T

here is no one in South Texas that has spent so much of his adult life promoting youth soccer than Jesse Harrell. For nearly four decades, Jesse has always been a passionate supporter and advocator of youth soccer. Although Jesse’s efforts started at club level, he continued to have an impact in the soccer community through the state, regional, and national levels.

Throughout his experience and some trial-and-error, he has discovered what works well, and what does not, in providing youth soccer programs to the Regional and National levels. Jesse always had his heart set out to do more with youth soccer than just his local association. He has contributed so much to the youth soccer community by being involved in almost every facet of the game as a soccer parent, coach, player, referee, volunteer, and administrator.
