Polynomials Â
This is what a polynomial looks like‌
Parts of a Polynomial Â
-A Variable is a symbol for a number we don’t know yet. It is usually a letter like x or y. -A number on it’s own is called a Constant. -A Coefficient is a number used to multiply a variable. -A Term is either a single number or a variable, or numbers and variables multiplied together.
Monomial, Binomial & Trinomial Â
There are special names for polynomials with 1, 2 and 3 terms:
Degrees of a Polynomial Â
For a Polynomial with only one variable (X) the Degree is the largest exponent of the variable (X).
Equivalent Polynomials Two polynomials that have the same sum‌
3x – 4 + 3 = 3x -3 + 4 3x - 7 = 3x - 7
Polynomials in Standard Form The standard form for writing a polynomial is to put the terms with the highest degree first‌
Adding Polynomials Â
Â
1.Place like terms together. 2.Add the like terms.
Subtracting Polynomials 1.Reverse the sign of each term you are subtracting. 2.Follow the steps for addition.
Multiplying Polynomials Â
Â
1.Multiply each term in one polynomial by each term in the other polynomial. 2.Add those answers together and simply if needed.
Dividing Polynomials Â
Â
1.Split the polynomial up by terms. 2.Divide each term by the denominator.
