7 Questions to Ask Before Hiring an ASP.NET Developer

The ASP.NET has emerged as one of the most preferred means of building websites, applications and web services. This makes ASP.NET developers some of the most sought out IT experts. Unfortunately, it also means that there are plenty of fake or under qualified developers or firms touting for business. This makes the process of hiring the right candidate even more important. A little care in the beginning can help us stave off a lot of heartache later on. After all, the wrong candidate can spell disaster for the very important function of building a composite web presence. You will get some idea of their skill set from the resume. A typical resume will list some of the technical proficiency. But this is not all. To be sure ask your ASP.NET developer the following questions: Q1: What is .NET? What do you like about ASP.NET? The reason: Obviously you are looking for the candidate’s basic understanding of the project at hand. A good developer should be able to tell you what it is, its elements and how it is used. Their response about ASP.NET can tell you a lot about how the candidate sees the framework and their comfort level with it. Q2: What was the most satisfying/challenging project you worked on? The reason: This will tell you about the complexity that the developer can handle, what they find challenging. By evaluating the process of overcoming challenges, you can also find out how resourceful the developer is, his/her dedication to a project and how the result is achieved. It can also give us a clearer picture of the developer’s skill. Keep in mind that ASP.NET developers often have different specializations and the answer will tell you about their preferences — whether they like dealing in algorithms or database.

Q3: Looking back, tell us about a project that left you unsatisfied. How will you ensure a better outcome now? The reason: No, we are not trying to catch the candidate’s faulty record. This question can give us an insight into the problem solving skill of the candidate. To make mistakes is natural. Good developers know how to use that failure to learn. The answer will also tell us about the person’s ability to come up with alternatives to a complex problem. Q4: Can you show us your experience and certificates? The reason: This one is pretty obvious. But experience will always count above certificates in this case. There are plenty of brilliant ASP.NET developers who never bothered to collect a bunch of certificates, while plenty of mediocre ones boosted their CV with a stack of certificates. However, certain certificates like Microsoft issued MCTS and MCSD show a certain technical proficiency. When the candidate claims extensive experience, do not hesitate to ask for references. Follow up with past clients. Ask them about their experience, the candidate’s work ethics, responsiveness and initiative. Q5: Can you tell the difference between ASP.NET WebForms and ASP.NET MVC? The reason: A good developer should be knowledgeable about both. If the candidate can explain the difference to you in a way that you understand, it means that he/she has a good handle on the subject and excellent communication skills to boot! Q6: What would you prefer: design, deployment and analysis of a project or focusing on pure development of well-defined tasks? The reason: This is partially to do with your own parameters. Every company has its own set of requirements that are influenced by their budget, size and project at hand. The first preference shows that the candidate will do well in projects that are yet to be launched with the ability to lead a larger role as it progresses. The second response, on the other hand, indicates that the candidate will be more comfortable as part of a well-established team, working on a clearly defined project. Q7: How do you keep yourself informed — through blogs, personal projects or other avenues? The reason: ASP.NET has gone through quite a few changes and its developer community is a thriving one. A good developer stay on point with everything that is happening in .Net world as well as changes that Microsoft brings in that affect different platforms ASP.NET. These questions may not cover the technical grounds, but they will tell you about your prospective ASP.NET developers’ ability to be part of a successful project, give you an insight into their preferences, confidence and abilities.
