About WasteBoards Three social entrepreneurs from Amsterdam founded WasteBoards: Rogier Heijning, Aernout Zappey and Marius Smit. WasteBoards evolved from our other company Plastic Whale, the first professional plastic fishing company in the world. It is our mission to end the problem of plastic soup, plastic waste polluting the world’s waters. We do this by creating valuable products from plastic waste, involving as many people as possible in the process.
Skateboards made from plastic waste At events and festivals plastic pollution is a major issue. Much of the plastic waste ends up on the ground and eventually in the environment. Here is the root of the problem: people regard plastic as a valueless, disposable material. That’s why we want to show that plastic is actually a valuable raw material which we can turn into beautiful products. And we want to involve as many people as possible in the process.
Each board is unique This is how we do it: we create high quality, handcrafted skateboards out of plastic waste: WasteBoards. The process is quite simple. At festivals we collect plastic bottle caps. We melt them in an oven. Then we press the caps into a mould. After a little while we take the board out of the mould and install the trucks and wheels.

Zes jaar lang observeerde, documenteerde en verzamelde ik plastic zee-afval. Plotseling was dit relevant geworden.

Ik was geschokt door de stapels plastic afval die elke dag op het strand aanspoelen. Meters hoge plastic afvalbergen die in de zee gegooid zijn, verzameld in onze woon- en werkplekken. Tijdens een gemeenschappelijke strandschoonmaakactie hoorde ik een zevenjarige jongen zeggen: ‘Ik ben kwaad op jullie volwassenen… Wij moeten altijd jullie problemen oplossen, het kan niet gewoon meer leuk zijn…’ Dit is hoe ik ben begonnen met het creëren, het laten zien, het mensen bewust maken, met veel plezier. Twee jaar later hield ik een expositie in een strandtent/ tuinhuisje om mensen te laten lachen, kijken en nadenken. Het dorp was bijzonder verrast, ze hadden nog nooit zoveel plezier gehad met iets wat eigenlijk zo verschrikkelijk is. Ik hield creatieve kinderworkshops projecten en hield een tweede expositie over mijn creaties. Ik moest het verhaal aan de wereld vertellen, een groot verhaal, ontdekt in een kleine gemeenschap. Momenteel bezoekt ze de Sint Lucas Academie voor Beeldende Kunst te Kapellen (België), voor een hogere graad in projectatelier. Klei, lood, brons, was, gips en hardsteen gingen reeds door haar handen. Op dit moment vindt ze het een uitdaging om expressiemogelijkheden te benutten in een grote diversiteit van ongebruikelijke materialen. Ook met spullen die al een eerder leven hadden. Een vijftal vissen samengesteld uit een frame van oude buizen en bekleed met resten XPS isolatiemateriaal. De afwerking bestaat uit doppen van zuivel-en frisdrank flessen. Oude banden vormen de vinnen, oude rubber strips de mond en de kieuwen.

Tassen ontworpen door kunstenaars met een boodschap over plastic verspilling. Over Do Goodie Bag [25]• De Do Goodie Bag is niet zomaar een boodschappentas maar een tas met een boodschap! De Do Goodie Bag is ontworpen door kunstenaars die ons op een mooie manier bewustmaken van de gevolgen van plastic verspilling. Per persoon gebruiken we zo’n 250 plastic wegwerptassen per jaar, dat betekent dat Nederland de aarde jaarlijks vervuilt met meer dan 4.000.000.000 plastic tassen. Met de Do Goodie Bag kunnen we het gebruik van plastic tassen terugdringen, door hergebruik te stimuleren en een alternatief te bieden voor de plastic wegwerptas. Each person uses about 250 plastic disposable bags per year, which means that the Netherlands pollutes the Earth annually

The Do Goodie Bag is strong, reusable and can easily fold into a small package so you always have it with you. There are two models: the black-white model of DUSarchitects which addresses the need of recycling. And the green model of illustrator Sue Doeksen that tells about the dangers of plastic soup.
