“Adventurers in Art And dutch design”

d.&a Expo “Open Up” gaat over reizen. De expansiedrift van de mens en reislust in het algemeen. Reizen is figuurlijk ook groeien, leren open staan voor het nieuwe, onbekende en het vreemde. Het verwacht een open houding en daarnaast vraagt het om zelfinzicht, respect en aandacht voor de gebruiken van een bepaald land. Reizen moedigt ook een soort van openheid aan, vergelijkbaar met het ontwerpproces van het maken van kunst, waardoor je unieke verbindingen kunt leggen en nieuwe ideeen kunt vormen. Tijdens de expo komt de imaginaire reis ook naar voren. Stel je werelden voor waarin je reist naar fantasie landen, gebieden en volken die enkel bestaan in het hoofd van de kunstenaar. De exposanten van Open Up nemen je graag mee op deze grote rondreis door het Dutch Design Hotel Artemis hotel. En wellicht kan het je inspiratie geven om een eigen reis te gaan maken?

d.&a Expo “Open Up” is about traveling. Our drive to explore and wanderlust in general. Traveling is figuratively also growing, learning to be open to the new and unknown. It also encourages a kind of openness and usually respect and paying attention to the customs of a particular country. This kind of openness is like the design process of making art, allowing you to make unique connections and form new ideas. And finally, the imaginary journey. Imagine worlds in which you travel to fantasy lands, regions and peoples that only exist in the mind of the artist. The Open Up exhibitors love to tell their stories, fantasies and maybe it will inspire you to create your own journey? A grand tour about the art of getting lost and going on an adventure.

Melanie Klein is afgelopen zomer afgestudeerd aan Hout en meubilerings college (afdeling: creatief vakman) in Amsterdam. Haar travel collectie bestaat uit leren tassen en een koffer. Deze collectie is ontstaan door een klant met bepaalde wensen te helpen en zijn geinspireerd op foto’s van vakantielanden of landen waar deze klant vaak heen reist. Vormen van landschappen zoals bergen komen voor in de tassen, bij de decoratie en vormen. Er wordt veel gereisd. Goede tassen en koffers zijn hiervoor onmisbaar. Deze collectie laat zien dat je gemakkelijk de wereld in kunt gaan in stijl. Herken de kwaliteit en de orginaliteit van Melanie’s werk en haar visie op reizen.

Melanie Klein graduated last summer from the vocational HMC school (department: creative craftsman) in Amsterdam. Her travel collection, consisting of leather bags and a suitcase by Melanie Klein, was created by helping a customer with certain wishes and is inspired by photos of holiday countries or countries where this customer often travels. Shapes of landscapes (such as mountains) appear in the bags, in the decoration and shapes. There is a lot of traveling and good bags and suitcases are indispensable for this. Her collection shows that you easily go out into the world in style. Recognize the quality and the originality of Melanie’s work and her vision on travel.

De Koffer

Er past veel in deze koffer (geen handbagage) maar hij is niet zo onhandig groot, dus kan hij makkelijk worden meegenomen naar verschillende bestemmingen. De koffer is gemaakt van echt leer, zodat hij beter beschermd is tegen breken in het vliegtuig.

This suitcase is built to hold a lot of stuff (not hand luggage) but is not too big, so it’s easy to take it to different destinations. The suitcase is made from real leather (such as the other bags) so it’s more protected against breaking in the plane.

Haar schilderijen maakt ze thuis aan de hand van de foto’s die ze op reis heeft gemaakt. Renneke is opgegroeid in het buitenland en het thema reizen is een doorlopende inspiratiebron voor haar. Renneke is bekend om haar prachtige figuratieve olieverfschilderijen die verhalen vertellen en bijna kinderlijk emoties uitdrukken. Haar schilderijen zijn zorgvuldig uitgewerkt en tonen haar diepgaande kennis van kleur, compositie en verhoudingen. Haar stijl is realistisch en expressief, en haar gebruik van licht en schaduw geeft haar werk diepte en dimensie. Haar reizen hebben haar een rijke en diverse inspiratiebron gegeven, en ze heeft haar verhalen en beelden vastgelegd op doek.

She makes her paintings at home based on the photos she took while travelling. Renneke grew up abroad and the theme of travel is a constant source of inspiration for her. Renneke is known for her beautiful figurative oil paintings that tell stories and express almost childish emotions. Her paintings are carefully elaborated and show her in-depth knowledge of colour, composition and proportions. Her style is realistic and expressive, and her use of light and shadow gives her work depth and dimension. Her travels have given her a rich and diverse source of inspiration, and she has captured her stories and images on canvas.

Josja Schepman heeft speciaal voor de expo “Open up” 3 vazen gemaakt geïnspireerd op de eeuwenoude Tulpen vaas waarvan de ontstaansgeschiedenis vermoedelijk in Nederland (Delft) ligt. Tulpen waren in de 17 e eeuw zeer populair en kostbaar en om de bloemen lang goed te houden werd de Tulpen vaas ontwikkeld. Misschien wel het eerste echt Dutch Design ontwerp? Josja heeft een veelzijdig oeuvre met een karakteristieke eigen stijl. Ze creëert een uitgesproken fantasiewereld waarin wonderlijke wezentjes kunnen rondlopen en daarnaast kan het werk van Josja ook een meer ingetogener,strakke ontwerperskant hebben.

Josja Schepman has made 3 vases especially for the “Open up” exhibition, inspired by the ancient tulip vase, the origin of which probably lies in the Netherlands (Delft). Tulips were very popular and expensive in the 17th century and the Tulip vase was developed to keep the flowers fresh for a long time. Perhaps the first real Dutch design design? Josja has a diverse oeuvre with a characteristic own style. She creates fantasy worlds in which wonderful creatures roam. In addition, Josja’s work can also have a more serious, streamlined and design look.

Happy little moment is ooit bedacht door Anne Sophie Oudman op het eiland Bali (Indonesië). Anne Sophie gelooft in een liefdevollere wereld en verrast zoveel mogelijk onbekenden met Happy Little Moments. Dat zijn kleine kaartjes en versjes die zij achterlaat op openbare plekken, om onbekenden een geluksmoment te bezorgen. Haar doel met Happy Little Moment is om zoveel mogelijk liefde te verspreiden, verbinding te creëren en mensen te inspireren om liever te zijn voor elkaar. Daarnaast is het verspreiden van de kaartjes voor de vinder iets dat Anne Sophie altijd doet als ze zelf onderweg is.

Happy little moment was once invented by Anne Sophie Oudman in Bali (Indonesia). Anne Sophie believes in a more loving world and surprises as many strangers as possible with Happy Little Moments. These are small cards and rhymes that she leaves behind in public places, to give strangers a moment of happiness. Her goal with Happy Little Moment is to spread as much love as possible, to create connections and to inspire people to be nicer to each other. In addition, distributing the cards for the finder is something that Anne Sophie always does when she is on the road herself.

Janine Vos de Mooij ontwerpt en maakt handgemaakte dozen en is al meer dan 25 jaar zich aan het ontwikkelen. Ze heeft heel veel kennis van papier en het ambacht van het dozen maken en haar reis is nog steeds gaande. Zij exposeert haar sieraden-reis-doosjes die geïnspireerd zijn op de Japanse inro: ingelegde opbergdoosjes die met een koord aan de ceintuur van een kimono werden gehangen. Kimono’s hebben geen zakken en de inro werden gebruikt om bijvoorbeeld medicijnen, kruiden of lakstempels in mee te nemen. Het thema reizen komt steeds weer terug in haar werk en daarnaast heeft ze in samenwerking met beeldend kunstenaar Harald van Noordt Amsterdams Marmer ontwikkeld. Het is een eigentijdse vorm van papier marmeren, die de Amsterdamse architectuur in de grachten weerspiegelt.

Janine Vos de Mooij designs and makes handmade boxes and has been developing her work over 25 years. She has a lot of knowledge of paper and the craft of box making and her journey is still going on. She exhibits her jewelry travel boxes inspired by the Japanese inro: inlaid storage boxes that were hung from the belt of a kimono with a cord. Kimonos have no pockets and the inro were used to carry medicines, herbs or wax stamps, for example. The theme of travel is a recurring theme in her work and she has also developed Amsterdam Marble in collaboration with visual artist Harald van Noordt. It is a contemporary form of paper marble, which reflects the Amsterdam architecture in the canals.

De kunstinstallaties/ soft sculpturen van Mieke de Waal zijn kenmerkend in haar werkproces – soms maandenlang – verdiep ze zich n een thema. Ook het feitelijke maakproces verloopt onderzoekend, experimenterend met materialen en technieken. Daarnaast is Mieke ook cultureel antropoloog. Deze twee interesse gebieden – kunst en de mens – komen samen in haar beeldende werk.

De meeste van haar soft sculpturen hebben de vorm van een kledingstuk: een kimono, een kaftan, een jurkje. Een kledingstuk zie ik als een symbolische weergave van een mens.

Mieke de Waal’s art installations/soft sculptures are characteristic of her work process – sometimes for months – she immerses herself in a theme. The actual make process is also inquisitive, experimenting with materials and techniques. Mieke is not only an artist, but also a cultural anthropologist. These two areas of interest – art and people – come together in her visual work. Most of her soft sculptures have the shape of a piece of clothing: a kimono, a caftan, a dress. I see a piece of clothing as a symbolic representation of a person.

Na een vijfjarige lerarenopleiding aan de Academie voor Beeldende Vorming in Tilburg, werkte Cremers 28 jaar als docent in de Beeldende vakken in het Voortgezet onderwijs. Vanaf 2010 is hij full time kunstenaar. Hij maakte Talloze reizen door verschillende werelddelen en veroorzaakten bij Cremers (1953) een aanhoudende fascinatie voor de grote variëteit aan woon- en leefvormen die hij zag. Ooit begonnen vanuit de realiteit, is zijn werk nu alleen nog maar het resultaat van zijn fantasie. Hij blijft steeds zoeken naar nieuwe invalshoeken binnen hetzelfde thema ‘Habitats’. Daarbij vormen zijn kleurrijke kleine krotjes vaak de bouwstenen voor het geheel.

After a teacher education at the Academy for Visual Art Education in Tilburg, Cremers worked for 28 years as a teacher in the Visual subjects in secondary education. From 2010 he has been a full-time artist. Countless journeys through different parts of the world caused Cremers (1953) to have a persistent fascination for the wide variety of living and living arrangements that he saw. Once started from reality, his work is now only the result of his fantasy. He keeps looking for new angles within the same theme ‘Habitats’. Mariska Rijsdijk is the agent of the work of Eric Cremer. Mariska was born in Aruba and grew up in Curaçao. She has an MA degree in Art History. With Rijsdijk gallery the aim is to promote contemporary Caribbean art in The Netherlands by means of pop-up gallery exhibitions. The collection consists of artworks from Aruba, Bonaire and Curaçao with the intention to exhibit works from other Caribbean regions in the future.

De FELY is een gloednieuwe lamp gemaakt van PET felt en zó geproduceerd dat deze als flat package is te versturen. Hierdoor is het dubbel duurzaam, niet alleen in materiaalgebruik maar ook in de verzending! De FELY lamp is verkrijgbaar in meerdere kleuren en is gemakelijk in elkaar te zetten.

Designer Sabine van der Ham knows how to design interiors and lighting in her own unique way. Her vision on custom solutions for products and interiors is innovative and innovative. Her studio SVDH DESIGN specializes in office, restaurant, hotel and home design and product design. The FELY is a brand-new lamp made of PET felt and produced in such a way that it can be sent as a flat package. This makes it doubly sustainable, not only in material use but also in shipping! Lian Ilara (Lian Jonkman) is een veelzijdige media vormgeefster. Zij is in haar vrije werk constant opzoek naar creatieve oplossingen om iets bij te dragen aan de wereld of los te maken in de ander. Hoe eenzelfde plek of object door ieder individu altijd op een andere manier geïnterpreteerd zal worden blijft haar verwonderen. Hoe die plaatsen, gevoelens en ervaringen zullen voortleven in zoveel verschillende vormen als een herinnering, en voor ieder een andere lading draagt. Haar fotografie is zowel digitaal als analoog en “Observe” is de titel van de serie van vijf foto’s die ze exposeert.

Lian Ilara (Lian Jonkman) is a multitalented media designer. In her free work she is constantly looking for creative solutions to contribute to the world or to release something in another. It continues to amaze her how the same place or object will always be interpreted in a different way by each individual. How those places, feelings and experiences will live on in so many different forms as a memory, each carrying a different load. Her photography is both digital and analogue and “Observe” is the title of the series of five photographs she is exhibiting.

De Spaanse vlag is meegenomen in het ontwerp van de tas en dit is zichtbaar aan de binnenzijden van de schouderbanden. Het zilveren achterpand is dan weer te herleiden naar het schild op de vlag. Er zijn ook invloeden van bekende schilders en kunstenaars uit Spanje in het ontwerp verwerkt.

Zoals de druppelvorm onderaan de tas, die is terug te herleiden naar de smeltende klokken van Salvador Dali. Delen van de kunstwerken van Salvador Dali en Antonio Gaudí (met de Sagrada familia) zijn samengebracht in een schildering op de voorkant van de tas. Een ingenieus ontwerp van de tas maakt dat de tas deelbaar is en in losse onderdelen gebruikt kan worden. Dit idee is vergelijkbaar met de bekende afrits-broeken. Zo kan gemakkelijk een deel van de tas met inhoud achtergelaten worden in het hotel en kan je vlot weer door om de stad verder te verkennen.

Enola Cras

Enola heeft het ontwerp van de tas gebaseerd op het kunstwerk ‘

Symposium” van Akseli Gallen-Kallela. Het land wat Enola inspireede was Estland.
