METRO III – ICAO ANNEX 8 INTRODUCTION This supplement presents information relative to the cockpit voice recorder (CVR). The CVR records automatically when A.C. power is available. Pilot preflight and post flight checks are provided in this supplement. Faulty operation of the CVR cannot be corrected by the pilot.

SECTION 1 . . . . . . .LIMITATIONS

No Change.

SECTION 2 . . . . . . .NORMAL PROCEDURES

BEFORE STARTING ENGINES . . . Add following procedure. COCKPIT VOICE RECORDER 1. Inverter Switch ...................................................................................................... NO. 1 OR NO. 2 3. CVR Erase Button .......................................................................................... PRESS AND HOLD THREE SECONDS MINIMUM NOTE This step is optional. It merely bulk-erases the magnetic tape and provides a clear tape for the next 30 minutes of operation. 4. CVR Test Button ............................................................................................ PRESS AND HOLD FIVE SECONDS MINIMUM 5. CVR Meter.........................................................................................................CHECK POINTER STEADY DEFLECTION IN GREEN BAND NOTE Additional assurance of proper CVR test may be obtained by inserting headphone plug into jack on CVR control panel and listening to the test tone and four cycle clicks. SECTION 4 . . . . . . .PERFORMANCE

No Change.

SECTION 5 . . . . . . .WEIGHT AND BALANCE

No Change.

SECTION 6 . . . . . . .MANUFACTURER’S DATA COCKPIT VOICE RECORDER The CVR is capable of recording 30 minutes of aural sounds on four channels of an endless magnetic tape. At the end of 30 minutes, previously recorded sounds are erased and new information is recorded. Sounds detected by the area microphone are recorded on one channel. Background noises, such as from engines and propellers are suppressed electronically. Another tape channel records all incoming signals which the pilot has chosen to receive by pushing in the respective buttons on his control box. A third channel is dedicated to the copilot's audio control box in a like manner. All VHF and intercom transmissions by either pilot will also be recorded by their respective channels. The remaining channel is dedicated to recording transmissions, by either the pilot or copilot, over the public address system, provided that a public address system is installed in the aircraft.

METRO III – ICAO ANNEX 8 SECTION 6 . . . . . . .MANUFACTURER’S DATA (continued) COCKPIT VOICE RECORDER (continued) The control unit is mounted in the pilot's instrument panel and includes a TEST button and meter, an ERASE button, and space for an area microphone. In the METRO III, the area microphone is located remote from the control unit. There is no ON-OFF switch and the recorder runs whenever A.C. power is available. The TEST button, when pressed and held a minimum of five seconds, causes the CVR to run through a check cycle. Each of the four recording channels is checked, a tone is generated and recorded on each channel, and the test meter needle is driven to the green band during the test cycle. If a headset is plugged into the control unit, the tone can be heard during the test cycle. Failure of the needle to remain in the green band during the test indicates a fault in the recording channel being self-checked at that time. If sounds are generated near the area microphone while the headset is plugged into the control unit, they will be repeated through the headphones after a short delay, whether the TEST button is pressed or not. The ERASE button, when pressed and held a minimum of three seconds, will cause all recorded information on the magnetic tape to be erased. This feature is operable only when the landing gear squat switches are in the weight-on wheels position. The recording unit is mounted aft of the cargo compartment aft bulkhead. It is contained in a crash and fire resistant case. Some installations include an underwater locator beacon mounted on the front of the recorder case. Tape life exceeds 8000 hours of running time.
