자연을 기록한 몸, 몸을 기록한 그림 김철우는 그의 작업 대부분은 작업실이 아닌 산과 들 자연의 풍경을 그린다. 그는 그림을 그리기 위해 산을 찾아 다니고 그림을 그리지 않는 일상에서도 자주 산행과 여행을 해왔다. 그는 문명의 이기를 사용하여 편리하고 쉽게 살아가기 보다 는 그의 몸으로 직접 자연을 만나고 느끼는 삶을 살고자 하였다. 그래서 먼 길을 걸어서 다니고 늘 작업도구를 챙겨 산 에 오르기를 즐겨 하며 작업 방법에 있어서도 디지털 매체나 새로운 매체를 사용하기 보다는 직접적인 느낌을 교감할 수 있는 매체를 사용하였던 것을 알 수 있다. 작가는 자연 현장에서 시각적으로 경험한 감각을 일방적으로 표출하는 작업, 즉 (자연 혹은 작품이라는 것을 타자적 영 역에 대상화 시켜 바라보는 위치에서 작업 하는 것이 아니라) 예술작업을 넘어 작가가 자연과 일체가 되어 서로 교감하 고 상호작용하는 것 그 자체를 예술이라는 차원에서 받아들이고 작업화 하고자 하였다고 볼 수 있다. 예술과 일상은 그의 삶 자체이자 그가 살고 있는 자연에 대한 감각적 교감이었고 물질로서의 작품을 만들어내는 것은 이 과정에 대한 확인하는 행위였던 것이다. 그래서 그의 작업은 현대미술에서 흔히 노출되는 현학적 논리나 거대한 작 품 스케일 같은 과도한 제스춰가 없다. 다만 대자연을 몸으로 느끼고 그의 시야 안으로 들어온 세계와 교감하였던 기록 만이 남아 있음을 알게 된다. 그의 작품을 보면 그림 속에서는 사람은 거의 보이지 않는 것을 알 수 있다. 그가 그린 것은 자연과 도시의 풍경들이기 에 그러한 면도 있을 것이지만 그럼에도 불구하고 인간이 부재한 텅 비워진 듯한 그 곳에서 사람의 향취가 느껴진다. 이 것은 아마도 그의 붓 터치와 드로잉에는 작가가 자연 가운데 찾고자 했던 때묻지 않은 순수한 인간상에 대한 애정이 남 아 있고, 그 향기가 배어 있어서인 것 같다. 그리고 이러한 점은 어떤 면에서는 그의 작업이 인간과 자연이 하나가 되어 만들어낸 그림이었기 때문이다. 이는 마치 동양의 산수화에서 인간과 자연의 조화를 지향하고 물아일체의 감흥을 그리 고자 했던 것과 유사해 보인다. 그러한 의미에서 보면 김철우의 작품은 사물 외부의 시각적 현상에 집중하였던 서양의 풍경화와는 달리 동양의 산수화 와 닮아 있음을 알 수 있다. 그러나 그의 작업은 관념적이고 상상적인 문인들의 산수화나 장소를 소재로 한 단순한 실경 산수의 느낌이 아니다. 겸재 정선의 진경산수처럼 사생하는 방법을 취하면서도 독자적인 해석을 가하는 차별성이 있다. 작가만의 고유한 회화적 힘이 있다는 것이다. 그래서 그의 그림을 여러 점을 같이 감상하다 보면 국내와 해외의 여러 명 소를 그려내는 가운데에서도 그의 고유한 필치와 풍경을 해석하는 감각이 일정하게 유지되고 있음을 발견 할 수 있다. 이러한 작가의 해석과 일관된 경향을 보게 되면 김철우의 자연에 대한 철학과 교감하는 감각방식이 무엇인지 읽을 수 있 을 것 같다. 그 이유는 작가가 자신이 살고 있는 세상의 구석 구석을 다니며 자연과 도시 속 장소들을 몸으로 느끼고 그 려내면서 대자연의 공간 속에 그 만의 방식으로 생생하게 살아 있는 자신의 시선을 기록하였기 때문이며, 또한 그 기록 을 하는 방식에 대한 작가의 독특한 견해를 가지고 있기 때문이다. 그러한 의미에서 관객은 그의 작품을 통하여 자연을 새롭게 발견하고 그 자연 속에 살고 있고 자연과 교감하고 있는 인간을 만날 수 있다. 그리고 동시에 자연을 응시하는 한 인간의 시선으로부터 그 자연과 교감하였던 경험을 마주칠 수 있다.

Embodying nature, Depicting the body It is not in his atelier that Kim Cheolwoo draws his natural sceneries but outside in nature. To find inspiration, Mr. Kim took the habit of hiking and travelling to various places, whether they be related or not to the drawings. He has always shown an inclination toward wholesome natural environments rather than the comfort of modern conveniences. You can feel that in his work; it is executed manually rather than through the ubiquitous new digital technologies in order to depict his journey into nature more accurately. Mr. Kim brings us an interactive visual experience. Favouring techniques that convey a deep connection between the artist and nature over more simple depictions of natural landscapes, it is evident that he understands this form of communication itself as the essence of his art. His everyday life cannot be understood without art. He lives and breathes art. Each of his work is an attempt at perfecting how to communicate what one may see as his organic communion with nature. Therefore, pedantic expressions or any unnecessary gestures such as a colossal scale are not to be found. In their stead are traces of the world understood through his own vision of it. In his work there are barely any human beings to be found. Even in his depictions of cities, the human presence that we do catch is that of the impalpable scent left by humans. That is perhaps because of the subtle affection for human existence that he ardours and because, let us be reminded, of his continuous efforts to connect humans and nature. From his work, we are able to feel this harmonization of the human being in nature in the Korean water-colour landscape painting. It could also be an expression of the Buddhism idioms “I become one of other thing” . In this way, Kim Cheolwoo’ s work can be said to be closer to the traditional Asian water-colour paintings rather than European landscape paintings. And yet his work also differs from the former in that, just like Gyeomjae Jeong Seon (the Great Korean painter from Joseon era, one of the few known Korean painters to depart from Chinese styles), his work is the product of his own and original perspective on the themes he paints. That is indeed why his work also remains consistent to the painter’ s personal artistic technique even as the location of his drawings moves across space to different parts of the world. What transpires from his work, thus, is ultimately his own philosophy about art and nature. I say this because it is evident that his paintings are like accounts of the particular physical and mental experiences he was brought into as he travelled to various parts of the world. They are expressed through and contain his individual views of life and the world. His work allows viewers to rediscover nature and come into contact with someone who not only enjoys nature, but live in it through his art. To our own delight, we all share and get a glimpse of Kim Cheolwoo’ s communion with nature.

Incarner la nature, dépeindre le corps Ce n’ est pas dans son atelier que Kim Cheolwoo peint ses paysages naturels, mais à l’ extérieur dans la nature. Pour trouver l’ inspiration, M. Kim a pris l’ habitude de faire de la randonnée et de se rendre à divers endroits, qu’ ils soient liés ou non aux dessins. Il a toujours montré un intérêt pour des environnements sains et naturels, plutôt que pour le confort des commodités modernes. Vous pouvez ressentir cela dans son art, qu’ il exécute manuellement. Il préfère se rendre sur place, dans la nature, pour réaliser son travail plutôt que d’ avoir recourt à de nouvelles technologies numériques souvent omniprésentes de nos jours. M. Kim nous apporte une expérience visuelle interactive. Il favorise les techniques qui acheminent vers un lien profond entre l’ artiste et la nature et non sur des représentations simples de paysages naturels. Il est évident que cette forme de communication est elle-même l’ essence de son art. Sa vie quotidienne ne peut être comprise sans l´art. Il vit et respire l’ art. Chaque partie de son travail est une nouvelle tentative afin de perfectionner sa manière d´exprimer sa communion avec la nature. Par conséquent, les expressions sophistiquées ou les gestes inutiles (comme les éléments colossaux) ne sont pas représentés. A leurs places, on y découvre des traces du monde qui traduit sa propre vision du monde. Dans son travail, l’ Homme n’ est pas représenté. Même dans ses représentations de villes, la présence humaine que nous pouvons percevoir est un parfum impalpable laissé par cette présence humaine. Cela vient peut-être de son affection subtile pour l’ existence humaine et, rappelons-nous, de ses efforts continus pour lier l’ homme et la nature. De son travail, nous sommes en mesure de sentir cette harmonisation des humains avec la nature dans la peinture de paysage aquarelle coréenne. Il pourrait également être une expression de l’ idiome bouddhisme “je deviens un avec autre chose”. De cette façon, le travail de Kim Cheolwoo peut être considéré comme plus proche des peintures aquarelles traditionnelles de l’ Asie plutôt que des peintures de paysages européens. Et pourtant, son travail se distingue aussi de l’ ancienne, comme Gyeomjae Jeong Seon (le grand peintre coréen de l’ époque Joseon, l’ un des peintres coréens très connus pour s’ être écarté de style chinois), son travail est le produit de son propre et originale point de vue sur les thèmes qu’ il peint. Effectivement c’ est pourquoi son oeuvre reste également conforme à la technique artistique personnelle du peintre même si l’ emplacement de ses dessins atteignent différentes parties du globe. Ce qu’ on retient de ses oeuvres en fin de compte, c’ est sa propre philosophie sur l’ art et la nature. Je dis cela car il est évident que ses peintures sont comme des récits de ses expériences physiques et mentales qu’ il a vécu durant ses différents voyages aux coins
du monde. Elles sont exprimées et contiennent ses points de
vue individuels de la vie et du monde. Son travail permet aux spectateurs de redécouvrir la nature et entrer en contact avec quelqu’ un qui n’ aime pas seulement la nature, mais aussi vit en elle à travers son art. Nous partageons tous à notre propre plaisir la communion de Kim Cheolwoo avec la nature.
