Kim Ji-wonโ€™s Glass Work

Magic-like Transformation of Wine Glass Shin Hang-seop (Art critic)

Any substances that light penetrates make both eyes and mind clear. Being able to see beyond the surface provides sense of freedom in a visual and spiritual aspect. As a transparent material, glass symbolizes overcoming physical obstacles and communication between the front and the back. Many materials existing in real world block out a face beyond the surface from visible one. It is why we feel frustrating no matter how beautiful the surface of substances is. Among various materials, however, substances like crystal and glass have its own existence and show an aspect beyond because the substance itself is transparent. Kim Ji-won applies issue of communication between โ€˜in and outโ€™ for the work using transparent wine glasses. With transparency being a medium, she adds new forms of formative interpretation and draws fantastic images beyond an ordinary sight. In other words, she suggests principles of communication for the unified world staring at formative beauty that wine glasses have as a transparent material. She devises a formative world where the form is equivalent to its content. Her glass work is like kind of a magic. Odd transformation of shapes like virtual reality can be called a magic combining imagination, physical properties and heat. Commercialized wine glasses show physical properties of glasses which is expressed by its melting process with heat. She assumes a situation where original form becomes distorted and transformed one with formative principles by heating wine glasses, a beautifully made finished product. A wine glass has great beauty in shape. Above all, it has elegant curves and shape reminding a womanโ€™s body so it is enough to lead an erotic imagination. A function of a wine glass is in harmony with a sense of beauty to lead a sweet imagination. She also tries to find another form of beauty to be entailed by breaking external one of a wine glass. So to speak, she aims at the beauty of contorted pearls from which people can enjoy visual pleasure, for example. This can be an explanation for why she chooses wine glasses for her subject matter. She brings characteristics of transparent materials into relief with a series of glass work using wine glasses and enjoys accompanying formative variations. Wine glasses come to have contorted shapes by several glassesโ€™ getting partly melted and unexpectedly adhered to each other when they are heated in an electronic oven. These shapes, of course, are results of fully expected conditions considering physical properties of glass and the point of fusion. For example, the work which shows a similar shape with melted wax by melted wine glasses is based on a complete scenario. It progresses in a method that puts wine glasses on edges of firebricks and heats them and similar form expected based on the scenario can be gained. That is, the artist can make an image reminding Daliโ€™s The Persistence of Memory which has several clocks flowing down. Produced images depend on the combination, arrangement and composition of glasses. This can be done by complete control over the process. Solid wine glasses change to mollusks-like ones through aforementioned processes. Because each part of wine glasses such as bowl, handle and support has different point of fusion, they make fantastic shapes. The curves made when the glassesโ€™ curvy part, an outline of the bowl, the handle and supporting part are contorted are mysterious. It is because the contortedness makes elegant, imagination stimulating shapes. Various images in shapes and lines can be seen according to the viewing angle. The number, direction and superimposition of wine glasses make various forms of lines. Diverse images of transformed wine glasses which are characterized by curvy shapes not only provide visual pleasure but also enable limitless imagination. Accidental and natural lines, shapes and curves produced when it is impossible to gain standardized images are fantastic.

She further aims at the visual beauty made by wine glassesโ€™ transparency

by introducing lights. Lines and curves become more vivid and beautiful with lights by setting up electroluminescence in an acrylic panel and putting contorted glasses on it. The lighting fixture which creates mystique is effective to emphasize a decorative aspect as well as visual pleasure. An artwork which has a light continuously changing its color has a stronger mystique. Appreciators can experience a kind of catharsis with these artworks.
