Bocouture® 50 Abbreviated Prescribing Information Please refer to the Summary of Product Characteristics (SmPC). Presentation 50 LD50 units of Botulinum toxin type A (150 kD), free from complexing proteins as a powder for solution for injection. Indications Temporary improvement in the appearance of moderate to severe vertical lines between the eyebrows seen at frown (glabellar frown lines) in adults under 65 years of age when the severity of these lines has an important psychological impact for the patient. Dosage and administration Unit doses recommended for Bocouture are not interchangeable with those for other preparations of Botulinum toxin.

Reconstitute with 0.9% sodium chloride. Intramuscular injection (50 units/1.25 ml). Standard dosing is 20 units; 0.1 ml (4 units): 2 injections in each corrugator muscle and 1x procerus muscle. May be increased to up to 30 units. Not recommended for use in patients over 65 years or under 18 years.

Injections near the levator palpebrae superioris and into the cranial portion of the orbicularis oculi should be avoided. Contraindications Hypersensitivity to Botulinum neurotoxin type A or to any of the excipients. Generalised disorders of muscle activity (e.g. myasthenia gravis, Lambert-Eaton syndrome). Presence of infection or inflammation at the proposed injection site. Special warnings and precautions Should not be injected into a blood vessel. Not recommended for patients with a history of dysphagia and aspiration. Adrenaline and other medical aids for treating anaphylaxis should be available.

Caution in patients receiving anticoagulant therapy or taking other substances in anticoagulant doses.

Caution in patients suffering from amyotrophic lateral sclerosis or other diseases which result in peripheral neuromuscular dysfunction. Too frequent or too high dosing of Botulinum toxin type A may increase the risk of antibodies forming. Should not be used during pregnancy unless clearly necessary.

Interactions Concomitant use with aminoglycosides or spectinomycin requires special care. Peripheral muscle relaxants should be used with caution. 4-aminoquinolines may reduce the effect. Undesirable effects Usually observed within the first week after treatment. Localised muscle weakness, blepharoptosis, localised pain, tenderness, itching, swelling and/or haematoma can occur in conjunction with the injection. Temporary vasovagal reactions associated with pre-injection anxiety, such as syncope, circulatory problems, nausea or tinnitus, may occur. Frequency defined as follows: very common (≥ 1/10); common(≥1/100,<1/10);uncommon(≥1/1000,<1/100);rare(≥1/10,000,<1/1000);veryrare(<1/10,000).

Like any patient undergoing an aesthetic treatment, I would prefer not to feel any pain or discomfort during the procedure.

Pain is a big issue for a lot of people and can be a key deciding factor on whether or not to have certain treatments. Unfortunately many of the most effective treatments in our industry, even those that are considered to be minimally or even non-invasive, do carry with them some level of pain and discomfort, so being able to offer your patients effective pain management is a must.

Having heard a lot of positive reviews about Galderma’s new local anaesthetic cream, Pliaglis®(7% lidocaine/7% tetracaine), I wanted to see how effective the product really was.

Pliaglis® is the first and only self- occluding and clinically proven, FDA approved topical anaesthetic cream that combines the highest concentrations of lidocaine 70mg/g and tetracaine 70mg/g. One of the most unique features of the product is its self-occluding delivery system. Not only does this ensure rapid onset, within 30-60 minutes, and long lasting effect (my hand was comfortably numb for a few hours after the treatment providing extra post-treatment pain relief), but it also makes using topical anaesthetic in a busy aesthetic clinic easier and less messy. Once the product is exposed to the air it dries to form an occlusive barrier in the form of a ‘pliable peel or mask’, which can be simply peeled off or wiped off. This was markedly different to when I have had local anaesthetic creams before and have been sat with cling film on my face, which then has to be removed before the treatment.

Because it has a fast onset of action, Pliaglis® can provide effective relief for injectable treatments within 30 minutes with the maximum anaesthetic effect being achieved after 60 minutes. This makes it ideal for more painful treatments such as laser ablation, dermal rollering or tattoo removal. It is for these indications in particular that Pliaglis® has the potential to improve the conversion rate of patients moving from consultation to actual treatment.

Providing adequate pain control in your practice can transform your business and is an investment in-patient care that no discerning aesthetic clinic can afford to ignore. Having happy patients equates to a good reputation, repeat business and word of mouth recommendations.

Having tried the product myself I felt absolutely no pain when then needle was stuck into the back of my hand and I would definitely choose to use it again before having any potentially painful procedures.

Presentation: Botulinum toxin type A (Clostridium botulinum toxin A haemagglutinin complex) 10 Speywood units/0.05ml of reconstituted solution (powder for solution for injection). Indications: Temporary improvement in appearance of moderate to severe glabellar lines seen at frown, in adult patients under 65 years, when severity of these lines has an important psychological impact on the patient. Dosage & Administration: Botulinum toxin units are different depending on the medicinal products. Speywood units are specific to this preparation and are not interchangeable with other botulinum toxins. Reconstitute prior to injection. Intramuscular injections should be performed at right angles to the skin using a sterile 29-30 gauge needle. Recommended dose is 50 Speywood units (0.25 ml of reconstituted solution) divided equally into 5 injection sites,: 2 injections into each corrugator muscle and one into the procerus muscle near the nasofrontal angle. (See summary of product characteristics for full technique). Treatment interval should not be more frequent than every three months. Not recommended for use in individuals under 18 years of age. Contraindications: In individuals with hypersensitivity to botulinum toxin A or to any of the excipients.

In the presence of infection at the proposed injection sites, myasthenia gravis, Eaton Lambert Syndrome or Amyotrophic lateral sclerosis.

Special warnings and precautions for use: Use with caution in patients with a risk of, or clinical evidence of, marked defective neuro-muscular transmission, in the presence of inflammation at the proposed injection Date of preparation: March 2013

site(s) or when the targeted muscle shows excessive weakness or atrophy . Patients treated with therapeutic doses may experience exaggerated muscle weakness. Not recommended in patients with history of dysphagia, aspiration or with prolonged bleeding time. Seek immediate medical care if swallowing, speech or respiratory difficulties arise. Facial asymmetry, ptosis, excessive dermatochalasis, scarring and any alterations to facial anatomy, as a result of previous surgical interventions should be taken into consideration prior to injection.

Injections at more frequent intervals/higher doses can increase the risk of antibody formation. Avoid administering different botulinum neurotoxins during the course of treatment with Azzalure. To be used for one single patient treatment only during a single session. Interactions: Concomitant treatment with aminoglycosides or other agents interfering with neuromuscular transmission (e.g. curare-like agents) may potentiate effect of botulinum toxin. Pregnancy & Lactation: Not to be used during pregnancy or lactation. Side Effects: Most frequently occurring related reactions are headache and injection site reactions.

Generally treatment/injection technique related reactions occur within first week following injection and are transient and of mild to moderate severity and reversible. Very Common (≥ 1/10): Headache, Injection site reactions (e.g. erythema, oedema, irritation, rash, pruritus, paraesthesia, pain, discomfort, stinging and bruising). Common (≥ 1/100 to < 1/10): Facial paresis (predominantly describes brow paresis), Asthenopia, Ptosis, Eyelid oedema, Lacrimation increase, Dry eye, Muscle twitching

(twitching of muscles around the eyes). Uncommon (≥ 1/1,000 to <1/100): Dizziness, Visual disturbances, Vision blurred, Diplopia, Pruritus, Rash, Hypersensitivity. Rare (≥ 1/10,000 to < 1/1,000): Eye movement disorder, Urticaria. Adverse effects resulting from distribution of the effects of the toxin to sites remote from the site of injection have been very rarely reported with botulinum toxin (excessive muscle weakness, dysphagia, aspiration pneumonia with fatal outcome in some cases). Prescribers should consult the summary of product characteristics in relation to other side effects. Facial anatomy courses hope to raise standards A series of stand-alone facial anatomy teaching courses are being run to help raise standards in the industry.The courses will be led by leading plastic surgeon and trainer Mr Dalvi Humzah and have been accredited by the Royal College of Physicians and Surgeons of Glasgow.

The training will cover in detail the upper face (including the tear trough and peri ocular anatomy), the lower face and neck. With each anatomical area, Mr Humzah will discuss technical considerations when treating using

The Official PIP Campaign Group (OPIC) and The PIP Implants Scotland Campaign have joined forces in appealing to women to come forward with their explanted PIP Breast Implants and to submit them to a testing programme in Italy, which is making significant breakthroughs in understanding the impact of the fraudulently made breast implants on the human body.

Italian Chemist Giangiacomo Beretta, Italian based plastic surgeon Matteo Malacco, and UK based plastic surgeon Adrian Richards are leading an experimental clinical survey from a laboratory based at the university of Milan. Mr Beretta says, “The first preliminary analysis may help us to understand the complicated picture of the health effects of PIPs. A question that still needs to be answered is why do some PIP implants not show any problems during many years of implantation, whilst others are found ruptured or ‘exploded’ after just a few months of implantation? We need more samples of intact implants to get a more clear picture of the situation. We need specimens of shells from ruptured implants too with attached information about serial numbers and the clinical evolution since implantation”.

WhatClinic.com reports rise in popularity of fat transfer and removal treatments

Two in five beauty product searches are made on mobile devices says study Consumers made over 2.1 million searches on the web for beauty care products in June and 38% were made using mobile devices, reveals the latest online search data from Greenlight.

The agency’s ‘ Beauty Sector Report - Issue 1’, the first edition of its quarterly research series covering the sector, identified the most popular keywords used by consumers in June to find skincare and other products on Google UK, when they searched via desktops/laptops and mobile devices.

1.3 million searches for beauty care products were made via computers, and 816,481 were made using mobile devices. Searches across both laptop and mobile devices peaked in January, dropping off sharply in February and into March. Whilst they picked up again in April, desktop search volumes in the lead up to June have remained well below levels seen between July 2012 and January this year.

Indication: Venous cannulation or venipuncture: Adults including the elderly and children over one month of age. Local anaesthetic for topical use to produce surface anaesthesia of the skin prior to venous cannulation or venipuncture. Dose and method of use: Apply 1 to 2.5g of LMX4 Cream to the area of the skin where the procedure will occur. No more than 1g of cream should be applied to children under 1 year of age, 1g of cream equates to approx. 5cm of cream squeezed from the 5g tube or approximately 3.5cm of cream squeezed from the 30g tube. The LMX4 Cream should remain undisturbed on the skin and can be covered with an occlusive dressing to prevent disturbance. Adequate anaesthesia should be obtained after 30 minutes, but the LMX4 Cream can be applied for up to 5 hours under a dressing. Shortly before starting the procedure the LMX4 Cream should be removed with clean gauze and the procedure site prepared in the usual manner. Maximum application time for 1 year and above should not exceed 5 hours. Maximum application time for 3 month up to 12 month infant should not exceed 4 hours and maximum application time for 1 month up to 3 month infant should not exceed 60 minutes. Indication: Painful topical treatments on larger surface areas of intact skin: Adults, including the elderly. Local anaesthetic for topical use to produce surface anaesthesia of the skin prior to painful topical treatments on larger surface areas of intact skin. Apply approx. 1.5g to 2g LMX4/10cm2 of skin up to a maximum of 900cm2. Apply until response is achieved which is generally between 30 to 60 minutes. Typical estimated quantities are 30-40g/200cm2 (approx.

10cm x 20cm or covering a face), 45-60g/300cm2 (approx. 10cm x 30cm or covering an arm), 135g-180g/900cm2 (approx. 30cm x 30cm, or covering torso or back). The LMX4 Cream should be applied evenly at the specified dose with a uniform thickness across the area where the treatment will occur.

Measures may be taken to ensure the cream remains undisturbed. Shortly before starting the topical treatment the LMX4 cream should be removed and the site for treatment prepared in the usual manner. Contraindications: Hypersensitivity to Lidocaine, or any of the amide-type local anaesthetics, or any of the excipients. Precautions and warnings: For external use only. Do not apply to irritated skin or if excessive irritation develops. Avoid contact with eyes. Do not use in large quantities or for longer times than those recommended. LMX4 Cream should not be applied to wounds, mucous membranes, or on atopic dermatitis as there is no clinical data relating to its use on such areas. Lidocaine should not be used in any clinical situation in which its penetration or migration beyond the tympanic membrane into the middle ear is possible. Repeated doses of Lidocaine may increase blood levels of Lidocaine. Patients with severe hepatic disease are at greater risk of toxic plasma concentrations of Lidocaine. Production of surface anaesthesia can block all sensations in the treated skin and trauma to the treated area such as exposure to extreme temperatures should be avoided until complete sensation returns. Interactions: Lidocaine should be used with caution in patients receiving Class 1 anti-arryhthmic drugs. Pregnancy and lactation: LMX4 should be used during pregnancy only if clearly necessary. Caution should be exercised when LMX4 is administered to a nursing mother.

Undesirable effects: Application of Lidocaine can cause transient local blanching followed by transient erythema and other effects can include irritation, redness, itching or rash of the skin. In rare cases local anaesthetics have been associated with allergic reactions including anaphylactic shock.

Systemic toxicity is unlikely but signs of systemic toxicity are blurred vision, dizziness, difficulty breathing, trembling, chest pain or irregular heart beat.

GENDER MATTERS TO STEREX Sterex welcomed representatives of Gender Matters to its latest Transgender electrolysis course. Dr Jones spoke to the audience about the importance of choosing a reputable clinic for cosmetic and aesthetic treatments where staff are highly skilled and where patient safety is paramount.

Representatives from ‘Gender Matters’ attend every Sterex course to give information and insight in a fun and inspiring way. Sherrie Tomlinson, CEO and Erika Godwin, Chair, who lecture to the NHS, the Police Force and other organisations, gave a fascinating, deeply moving, challenging and all encompassing presentation. Gender Matters, a registered charity based in Wolverhampton, provides a comprehensive programme of practical support, counselling, advice and information for anyone with any questions or problems concerning their gender identity, or whose loved ones are struggling with gender identity issues. They are great supporters of Sterex and all we are trying to achieve for the community. As a gesture of goodwill, Laurie Cartmell, director of Sterex, was pleased to make a donation to the charity in recognition of all their hard work and support.

Presentation: Botulinum toxin type A (Clostridium botulinum toxin A haemagglutinin complex) 10 Speywood units/0.05ml of reconstituted solution (powder for solution for injection). Indications: Temporary improvement in appearance of moderate to severe glabellar lines seen at frown, in adult patients under 65 years, when severity of these lines has an important psychological impact on the patient. Dosage & Administration: Botulinum toxin units are different depending on the medicinal products. Speywood units are specific to this preparation and are not interchangeable with other botulinum toxins. Reconstitute prior to injection. Intramuscular injections should be performed at right angles to the skin using a sterile 29-30 gauge needle. Recommended dose is 50 Speywood units (0.25 ml of reconstituted solution) divided equally into 5 injection sites,: 2 injections into each corrugator muscle and one into the procerus muscle near the nasofrontal angle. Summary Polydioxanone(PDO) - a substance previously used to produce absorbable surgical sutures, found many currently used in aesthetic medicine. Due to its collagen production stimulating properties, it is well suited for usage in face lift and neck, abdomen, buttocks or thighs treatments and as well skin tightening and firming around the shoulders. A high safety profile of polydioxanone and confirmed clinical observations, make PDO threads treatments safe and fully predictable. Introduction Aesthetic Medicine is one of the branches of medicine, which in recent years have been dynamically growing, both in terms of new surgical procedures and introducing newer and more advanced preparations.

Recently the real milestone, in terms of new surgical procedures, was the introduction of PDO(polydioxanone) threads on the market.

Through application of PDO threads in treatments, you can achieve the most effective and safest way to prevent and treat symptoms associated with ptosis of tissues, skin stretching and improving its density. This is due to specific feature of polydioxanone that causes mild tissue response, leading to the production of new collagen.

Polydioxanone itself is kind of a synthetic fibre, which in turn is produced by the polymerization with opening ring of a monomer p-dioxanone. Figure 1.1 shows the preparation of polydioxanone.

In vivo, polydioxanone is slowly hydrolyzed to form monomers of 2-hydroxy-ethoxyacetic. The monomers are further degraded, which results in obtaining water and carbon dioxide - the neutral compounds for the body and completely absorbable through the skin.

Fiber made of polydioxanone does not have the pyrogenic properties, therefore does not induce any response from the

immune system.

In medicine polydioxanone have been used for more than twenty years. It has been applied to monofilaments, absorbable surgical sutures and orthopaedic implants.

Because of that, the material is well known and tested. It features a high safety profile, which plays a key role, when it comes to new products entering the aesthetic medicine market. It often appears that after a few years, some novelties that captured the aesthetic market at the time, are of falling into oblivion, due to a number of complications and side effects.

In this case we can be completely confident of the PDO threadsâ&#x20AC;&#x2122; performance in the human body, as the polydioxanone had been used in suturing materials, in tens of millions surgical procedures, that had been performed around the world over twenty years. When introduced into the body, the polydioxanone is absorbed within 180 (up to 240) days.

The twenty-first century is a period of time, when the first attempts of using polydioxanone as a tissue-specific promoter, which stimulates the production of a new collagen were made. In 2008, South Korea patented one of the first polydioxanone thread systems positioned on a special needle for use in aesthetic medicine and plastic surgery. Since then the PDO threads permanently become a commonplace in tender procedures in the leading clinics, involved in aesthetic medicine and plastic surgery around the world.

South America and Russia. Now they start to conquer the Europe. The popularity of the PDO thread treatments is a result of a few basic facts: safety, efficiency, predictability, ease of carrying out the procedures and the prices of the treatment. In all these fields, the PDO threads treatments are unbeatable, compared other thread lifting, or aesthetic medicine treatments. Table 1.1 shows a comparison of the basic features of lifting threads available on the market.

In Korea, a method based on the implantation of PDO threads into the acupuncture points have been developed, thus providing a long-term stimulation to the corresponding meridians and energy flow control. This effect is used for many ailments, which are accompanied by chronic pain, decreased immunity and weakened body.

In addition, procedures that use PDO strands are developed for incontinence and impotence.

The treatment using PDO thread The idea of the procedure is based on two mechanisms of action. The first consists of mechanically stressing the skin. This is done by putting the PDO thread into the deep layer of skin (dermis or subcutaneous tissue). The second mechanism uses biomedical properties of polydioxanone, which through stimulation of fibroblasts stimulates the natural process of collagen synthesis (Figure 1.2 and Figure 1.3). With this synergy desired aesthetic effects are achieved.

The process of the skin structure reorganization, takes place in two stages. Immediately after the treatment, wrinkles smoothing and tissues pulling can be observed, due to the mechanical effects of inserted threads. After about a month, begins a visible improvement of the original aesthetic effect, resulting from the increased synthesis of endogenous collagen fibbers. PDO strands are completely absorbed, while the aesthetic effects arising from the increased collagen synthesis last on average approximately 24 months (up to 36 months).

The duration of aesthetic effect is dependent on the initial condition of the skin, the quantity of fibroblasts within it, rate of metabolic processes taking place in the skin and the patient’s age and lifestyle (stimulants, photo-protection, skin hydration, etc.).

Due to the rapid rate of absorption, the PDO threads do not tend to cause fibrosis and scarring, unlike the large diameter fibbers with biodegradable properties, where the process can take over a year - a period of time, where risks are increased in a statistically significant manner.

Indications and contraindications for the PDO threads Due to PDO threads’ mechanism of action, it can be used for firming the skin, increasing the tension, reducing wrinkles or liquidating the consequences skin sagging.

Effects of treatments are based on the ability of inducing the synthesis of new collagen fibres.

The main indications for PDO threads: FACE: • Horizontal forehead wrinkles • The lion’s wrinkle • Reduced outer edges of the eyebrows, drooping eyebrows • Sagging skin under the lower eyelid • In-depth lip-nasal folds • Furrow cheek/yoke area • Tuck chin • Puppet lines • V-lifting • Drooping cheeks • Correction of the yoke area • Sagging skin in the area below the jaw • Correction of smoker wrinkles BODY: • The folds and wrinkles of the skin on the neck and décolleté • Firming and shaping the breast, breast lift • Sagging tissue and stretch marks on the buttocks, abdomen, arms and legs • Lifting buttocks • Sagging skin and subcutaneous tissue (after e.g. childbirth, liposuction) • Obesity - arms, abdomen, ribs • Alopecia (assisted surgery in addition to administration of PRP) • Improvement of skin firmness and tightness around the knees and elbows • Correction of atrophic lesions on the backs of the hands Contradictions to the treatments using PDO threads, are the same as general contradictions for other procedures in aesthetic medicine.

Inflammation of the skin and subcutaneous tissue Autoimmune diseases Adhesions and fibrosis of the skin and subcutaneous tissues Epilepsy Mental illness Clotting Disorders The use of anticoagulant therapy (treatment should be discontinued for at least 14 days prior to the treatment)

CLINICAL EXPERIENCE | PDO THREAD LIFTING In addition, if the thread will be placed deeper within the fatty tissue, the natural lipolysis stimulation occurs. This reduces the volume and the number of adipocytes. With this ability demonstrated by PDO threads, we can get a face slimming effect while stretching the skin - a procedure called V facelift.

Implantation of PDO threads can also cause a decreased tension of facial and mimic muscles. By weakening their strength, effects similar to the injection of botulinum toxin are produced.

When comparing the effects of botulinum toxin and threads, the latter is slightly weaker, although the aesthetic effects are more natural.

This result is particularly desirable, for patients who want to preserve the natural facial expressions while reducing wrinkles.

Types of PDO threads The PDO threads consist of two basic components.

The first is the thread which is implanted into the skin, and the second is needle, through which we make implantation.

One end of the thread is inside the needle and the other is braided around the needle. Types of threads and needles are shown in Figure 1.4.

Currently, we have different kinds of PDO threads (MONO, DS, SCREW, TWIN, COG) Their purpose is dependent on the initial condition of the skin, aesthetic defect to be corrected and the experience of the person performing the procedure.

This way we gain almost unlimited number of indications for which we can use PDO threads.

MONO Threads The mono thread is a single polydioxanone filament.

After entering the skin, it causes activation of collagen synthesis. Also exhibits the ability to tense and smooth the skin.

It has a relatively low capacity to lift the tissues.

Mainly used in treatments aimed at smoothing out facial wrinkles, increasing the volume of the cheeks, blending around neck and neck and lifting the chin.

MONO threads were versatile in cases of necessity to increase tension and improve skin firmness also beyond the face. In addition, we can use them to reduce the volume of fatty tissue.

MONO threads are also used in combination with other types of threads in advanced facelift treatments, correction of lip-nasal folds, contouring the jaw line, lifting the breast, buttocks, etc.

If wrinkles occur in the upper part of the face, MONO threads application can obtain results similar to the administration of botulinum toxin â&#x20AC;&#x201C; by obtaining the effect of smoothing out wrinkles and, depending on the depth of the implanted thread, it can reduce facial muscle activity of the area.

There is no need to make special arrangements for patients before the treatment.

The procedure itself implants threads into the skin and does not require any cuts and leaves no scar.

After the procedure, implemented threads are invisible and imperceptible.

TWIN Threads TWIN thread is a MONO thread twisted around its own axis â&#x20AC;&#x201C; it roughly resembles a braid.

Twisting the thread allows greater tissue response and higher collagen synthesis around the implanted threads. TWIN Threads can be used in the same locations as MONO threads if higher synthesis of collagen is desirable. Due to their structure, they are much stiffer, than the MONO threads and therefore have greater capacity for smoothing and stretching skin, which is located above them. Comparison of MONO and TWIN threads is shown in Figure 1.5.

Twisted threads on the needle, types SCREW and DS Threads twisted on the needle are available in two types: SCREW and DS. SCREW thread is a single MONO thread, whose free end is braided spirally on the needle (Figure 1.6).

With such structure it allows the free end of the thread to be literally screwed into the tissue. This allows elevation of the skin and subcutaneous tissue.

These threads are ideal for all types of treatments, in which we want to raise the skin, pull the nasal-lip

folds, puppet lines, or lift eyelids.

With the SCREW threads we can also perform V-lifting treatment on the middle and lower part of the face.

Novelty in the range of PDO threads are the DS threads (Double Screw) They are two SCREW threads emerging from one needle and entangling themselves just as alpha-helix of DNA. DS Threads can be used in the same locations as SCREW threads, in cases when we need to stimulate larger quantities of collagen synthesis and lift the tissue even more.

Schematic differences between MONO, TWIN and DS threads are shown in Figure 1.7.

COG hook threads The most advanced system of PDO threads are COG hook threads.

It is a system, which has similar capabilities to threads, which mechanically suspend tissue structures.

The thread contains a number of small hooks, which open one way after implanting into the tissue. This way they are able to raise and maintain the new position of drooping tissue. Because of the simplicity of implantation, the PDO threads are the safest and least patient aggravating alternative, from among all commercially available hooked or tapered threads.

Comparison is shown in Table 1.1.

COG threads bridge the gap between the idea of implanting PDO threads (the simplicity of the procedure, no complications, stimulation of natural repair and regeneration processes) and tissue lifting by mechanical means (the possibility of lifting similar to surgical procedures). COG thread construction is shown in Figure 1.8 By using 8 to 12 COG threads we are able to lift the entire face, including the eyelids.

In combination therapy, the COG threads are primarily used as a frame, which mechanically retain the skin and are additionally supported by other types of threads.

Summary Threads PDO are an interesting alternative to surgical facelift treatments. Although we are not able to reduce the excessive amount of skin, but we can significantly improve its quality and tension. It is also the first treatment in aesthetic medicine, for guiding effective sagging skins therapy, without having to increase the volume of the structures located below (in contrast to the volumetric facelift treatment).

PDO thread implantation procedure is fast and secure, and the results are visible immediately after treatment. In addition, please note that as every tissue stimulator, polydioxanone also causes an increased and deferred aesthetic effect - the first visible changes occur after approximately 14 days.

Patients who underwent the treatment with the use of PDO threads claimed that, the discomfort accompanying the procedure is much lower than during the administration of hyaluronic acid or mesotherapy. There-

fore the use of widely available anesthetic creams is quite sufficient as a preparation of the patient before the treatment. Another advantage of the PDO threads is the time during which the aesthetic effect lasts - an average of about 24 months.

Of course we must remember to take into account the number of fibroblasts in the skin, which number decreases with age.

To obtain similar results in different age groups, it is sufficient to use more threads for elder patients and thus gaining more intensive tissue response in the form of new collagen production.

Fibre made of polydioxanone does not does not have any pyrogenic properties, therefore does not induce any response from the immune system. Therefore it can be safely used with allergic patients.

Wide range of sizes, a variety of threads (MONO, TWIN, DS, SCREW, COG), the safety and long-lasting aesthetic results, one can predict that the coming years will be dominated by treatments based on the lifting PDO threads.

INTRODUCTION

RESULTS

Retinoic acid (RA), or Tretinoin, has been shown in clinical studies to reduce the visible signs of photoageing, which include lines and wrinkles, uneven pigmentation, laxity and skin roughness. However, RA can cause skin irritation so interest has emerged recently in the use of Retinol to treat photoaged skin, as it is noted for effects similar to RA but with less skin irritation. Retinol is known to convert to RA in the skin but tissue uptake of Retinol in many current skincare formulations is low. Retriderm® Retinol Protein Rich Serum delivers Retinol in an advanced and patentpending oil-free, aqueous suspension to increase penetration into the skin and conversion of the Retinol to RA. This study describes the results of a small pilot study to determine the efficacy of the 1.0% Retinol formulation and a more extensive study to evaluate the effects of this same formulation at 0.5% Retinol to minimise skin irritation.

The open-label pilot study was carried out at two independent sites at which 5 and 6 patients applied the Retriderm® Retinol 1% Protein Rich Serum nightly for 8 weeks and 12 weeks respectively. At 8 and 12 weeks the percentage of subjects that had improved by at least 1 grade on a 0-5 Dermatologist scale was: • 100% for overall photodamage, crow’s feet and lack of elasticity, • 90% for cheek wrinkles and lack of brightness, • 80% for mottled hyperpigmentation, • 70% for under-eye wrinkles and forehead wrinkles, and • 40% for skin roughness These encouraging results justified an additional study to evaluate the efficacy of a 0.5% Retinol suspension for a short time (e.g. 8 weeks) and to determine the likelihood of skin irritation at this lower concentration.

In the follow-up study 30 females with moderate to severe photodamage were enrolled; 22 in the active group using Retriderm® Retinol 0.5% Protein Rich Serum and 8 in the control group using the vehicle only. Each study participant used the active or vehicle product nightly for 8 weeks.

Whilst the control group did not show any significant improvements at the end of the study, participants using the active showed significant improvements from baseline at 4 and 8 weeks for: • Hyperpigmentation, • Telangiectasia (spider veins or thread veins), • Skin laxity, • Tactile roughness, and • Actinic or solar keratosis

When the active and control groups were compared directly, however, there was no significant difference between from baseline between the groups. Data collected on the presence of burning, dryness, itching and redness showed that side effects in both the active and control groups were negligible in most cases and occasionally mild.

CONCLUSION The use of Retriderm® Retinol 1% Protein Rich Serum over a minimum 8 week period clearly demonstrates significant improvements in photoaged skin, including improvements in lines and wrinkles, pigmentation, lack of brightness and loss of elasticity. Side effects were not assessed in this study.

The use of Retriderm® Retinol 0.5% Protein Rich Serum over a minimum 8 week period also induces significant improvements in photoaged skin with minimal skin irritation or side effects. The lack of significant side effects suggests that patient compliance for nightly use of the product would be high.

Improvements were greatest and significant for hyperpigmentation, telangiectasias, skin laxity, tactile roughness and actinic keratosis. These improvements were not seen with the vehicle, indicating that the active product appears to improve all five skin characteristics over the treatment period and the vehicle does not. There was no significant difference between the active and control group when compared directly which is probably due to the formulation of the proteins within the vehicle itself which had a positive effect on the skin.

We speak to Nazan Damani from the Viva Light Hair and Beauty Laser Clinic about how the Aclepion Mediostar NeXT laser from Carleton Medical is improving patient satisfaction with laser hair removal in her clinic Cosmetic News: What attracted you to the Aclepion Mediostar NeXT laser?

Nazan Damani: My research into lasers for hair removal began in Feb. 2013. It was a choice between YAG lasers,IPL systems and diode lasers.

There are some excellent YAG lasers on the market but treatments tended to be rather slow,painful and uncomfortable.

The cheaper and popular IPL systems can also be uncomfortable and more dangerous on darker skin types. With regard to diode lasers, there were good, average and poor ones available but there was only one system available, which actually combined different wavelengths in one single diode stack when performing hair removal. This was the Mediostar NeXT diode laser from Asclepion. The dual wavelengths offer the perfect combination to target both the hair follicles and the blood supply to them. Where the laser is manufactured was an important factor.

Asclepion Laser Technologies are a German based company and are the manufacturers of the NeXT laser. Looking at the company more closely, I saw that that their work was dedicated in the field of medical research and technological innovation. Carleton medical is the sole distributor of the NeXT laser in the UK. They are one of only four laser companies/distributors in the NHS supply chain, which indicated to me that their lasers are clinically effective, as they are used in NHS operating theatres as well as cosmetic clinics.

CN: How does it compare to other technologies on the market?

ND: The NeXT laser is the fastest and was the latest hair removal laser in the market.

It has a larger spot size and coverage rate than most systems available including the Soprano. This meant that it treats more hair faster, speeding up treatment times and ensuring you can treat as many clients as 34 www.cosmeticnewsuk.com

possible with great outcomes.

Visually it looks like a quality product with a large full colour touch screen display with a graphic based user interface where you can access a patient database, application support and even treatment pictures and videos. I felt that the NeXT laser had technical advantages over other systems and that no other system treats as quickly and effectively. This has obvious commercial benefits.

CN: How important is purchasing the right equipment to the success of your practice?

ND: Making the right equipment choice was pivotal to the success of my new business.

CN: How has having the Asclepion Mediostar NeXT Laser impacted your business?

Zancomodels has released a new model showing all of the major muscle groups on a female torso.

Ricky Zanco, director of Zancomodels, was approached

by Merz Pharmaceuticals to work on a new model for some of their training classes. This model needed to include all the muscles of the face, neck shoulder and back. It needs to be made in a soft and realistic material that can be injected like the popular Facial Injection Manikins. It was a big challenge but they love a challenge.

The final model was met with great approval from Merz and everyone on the course, so much so they are already talking about designing some different models.

Zancomodels will be making a smaller version of this muscle model which will include just the face and will be available in the near future.

Not recommended for patients with a history of dysphagia and aspiration. Adrenaline and other medical aids for treating anaphylaxis should be available. Caution in patients receiving anticoagulant therapy or taking other substances in anticoagulant doses. Caution in patients suffering from amyotrophic lateral sclerosis or other diseases which result in peripheral neuromuscular dysfunction. Too frequent or too high dosing of Botulinum toxin type A may increase the risk of antibodies forming. Should not be used during pregnancy unless clearly necessary. Interactions Concomitant use with aminoglycosides or spectinomycin requires special care. Peripheral muscle relaxants should be used with caution. 4-aminoquinolines may reduce the effect.

Undesirable effects Usually observed within the first week after treatment. Localised muscle weakness, blepharoptosis, localised pain, tenderness, itching, swelling and/or haematoma can occur in conjunction with the injection. Temporary vasovagal reactions associated with pre-injection anxiety, such as syncope, circulatory problems, nausea or tinnitus, may occur. Frequency defined as follows: very common (≥ 1/10); common (≥ 1/100, < 1/10); uncommon (≥ 1/1000, < 1/100); rare (≥ 1/10,000, < 1/1000); very rare (< 1/10,000). Conflict Resolution is a process that is used to alleviate disputes. Methods such as, negotiation, mediation, bargaining and arbitration are employed to reach an equitable conclusion.

If this article was about reaching settlements in court, or remedying international conflict, it would proceed to discuss conflict resolution. To the contrary, this article delves into business in the medical aesthetics arena where conflict may come at any angle; therefore, conflict has to be embraced.

Conflict Management is all about minimising the negative aspects of conflict and stimulating the positive aspects of conflict in the hopes of improving the organization for the better. Any sane reader may be wondering why this publication is promoting conflict. The rebuttal to that thought is that since conflict is a part of any commercial organization, one may as well get some good out of it! Before we go forward, this article is going to speak to the requirements of the manager or owner, given that, ultimately the proverbial “buck” stops with them. We are going to prepare you for the most intense conflicts, so you must ask yourself, “Can I handle it?”, if so, proceed with caution.

Earlier it was mentioned that in business we should embrace conflict. The reason being is that contrary to past beliefs, the result of conflict will not undermine established authority. Actually, too little conflict leads to apathy and indecision which is horrible for an industry that requires its representatives to be creative and passionate. The other extreme is that you can have an abundance of conflict which can lead to infighting and eventually employee turnover, which is expensive and

counterproductive. What we want you to cultivate is functional conflict. Functional conflict helps to improve the organisation, whereas, dysfunctional conflict threatens the progress of the business.

The manager or clinic owner is actually going to

be the person to manage conflicts and make sure that they remain functional.

The business owner/manager in medical aesthetics will experience conflict internally, with fellow colleagues, and externally, with customers or patients. The two scenarios will have to be handled slightly differently; however, causes for conflict are largely the same.

It can be argued that because of the resentment, disruption, and inefficiency caused by conflict among staff, these issues ultimately end up being felt by the consumer who will eventually be swayed to attend a more harmonious practice. It can also be observed that many of these conflicts result either from not taking the time to properly structure your practice, or not enforcing that structure. For

example, how can employees work to a certain standard if there was never a clear benchmark in the first place?

Likewise, the chances of meeting the expectations of a client are slim to none if there was never a set process to set realistic expectations.

The easiest solution to this issue is to create or purchase an employee manual and a treatment or procedural manual. These documents will go over all aspects of your business; including all aspects of human resources, and all the clinical processes. These documents ensure that you and your team are all following the same rules. Moreover, it can clear up a dispute quickly, given that everyone has already been informed of how the practice is to run and everyone’s role and duties.

Just like a business plan is worth the dust that it collects if it is not used, so does a manual. All members of the team should be given a copy of the manual upon hiring and it should be incorporated into their training. Your patient process should be clearly communicated and when training new hires role play to make sure the new person is comfortable before having to handle the real thing.

For those readers who have created great processes not just for clients, but also for staff, I commend you; however, if you are still experiencing dysfunctional conflict, you probably are not following your own rules! Also, you may be avoiding conflict when you should be facing it head on as soon as you feel there is an issue. Now, please don’t conjure up images of bullfighting or MMA combat; dealing with organisational conflict is actually quite pleasant.

If you are having an interpersonal conflict with someone, or you have the unlucky job of finding out what transpired between others, the best thing to do is to ask the person to accompany you to an area that is away from onlookers. Speak with your body at a slight angle and not squared up to them. Additionally, speak loudly enough for them to hear you, but not to inform half of England of what you are discussing. Lastly, everyone hates someone speaking down to them; it’s condescending and makes you feel like a child. If they are sitting; sit, if they are standing, stand with them.

Once you are away, ask them how they are feeling.

People are complex and we usually have no clue what they are going through. The behaviour that you may be discussing with them could have resulted from something that is quite understandable and you will want that information before you proceed.

Let the person know, without blaming them and without making it personal, what the issue is and that you are approaching them in an effort to solve it. Without trying to, we can make things personal with the words we use. State facts, avoid pronouns, and be firm, but pleasant in finding a solution. Observe the proceeding type of language use to illustrate the personal and impersonal use of pronouns and how it can completely diffuse a situation.

We talk to Dr Natalie Blakely, medical director of The Light Touch Clinic, about the new patient management system she has developed for the iPad, which helps busy practitioners streamline the consultation process and manage patient records

he medical aesthetics industry is dominated by new technology and innovation, but this isn’t always reflected in the technology used behind the scenes with many practitioners still preferring to hand write or type patient notes and manually file them. But as the industry becomes increasingly competitive this type of traditional record keeping may start to impact on turnover.

With the phenomenal rise of cloud computing there has been a recent influx into the market of Apps and e-solutions aimed at the aesthetic practitioner and clinic which promise to handle every stage of the patient management process from the initial consultation through to treatment and follow-up reducing the time spent on paperwork and filing.

as our professional reputation has grown, so has our client base. Everything I’d worked so hard to achieve was being compromised by incomplete patient records and a chaotic administration system.”

Becoming increasingly demoralised Dr Blakely decided to set-aside her scepticism about technology and steer her clinic into the 21st century.

She says, “I was absolutely convinced there would be something on the App store that I could use.

But although there were a many generic systems on the market there was nothing aimed at the aesthetic practitioner with specific features relevant to the industry.”

Dr Blakely decided she needed a system that ran on a tablet with off-site data storage that would allow her to put her patient records onto the iPad. With nothing available that met her needs, she decided to create a patient management system for herself and the idea of Consentz was born.

Dr Blakely had been introduced to Ollie Maitland, a London-based developer with many years of experience creating software solutions at a business course she was taking and approached him about developing the system with her. She says, “Some of the most frustrating hours of my life have been spent speaking to helpdesk representatives in overseas call centres, so I felt it was important that my product was designed and developed in the UK with a UK-based helpdesk.”

Several months and many sleepless nights later, Consentz was up and running in her clinic and it has been a Godsend. Although Consentz is not a CRM software it is designed to integrate with exist-

As the sole practitioner of a busy clinic she was increasingly spending her lunchtimes, evenings and weekends dealing with admin from back-to-back appointments including transcribing treatment notes, completing treatment forms, uploading before and after photos to the clinic PC and organising prescriptions. Dr Blakely has an iPad in reception that the patient uses to enter their personal details and fill out the medical questionnaire. This is synced to the iPad in the consultation room so she can then go through the medical questionnaire with the patient and record her consultation notes. The system enables you to either touch type your notes directly onto the iPad as you go or use its voice recognition software, Siri. Dr Blakely is also planning to add medical voice recognition software to the system so it will pick up more complex medical terminology. It also has a treatment selection menu, which can be tailored to your own clinic. This allows you to select the treatments the patient is having and will automatically load the consent form, which your patient can read and sign directly onto the iPad. You can also take your before and after pictures on the iPad which go straight onto the patient records and you can then add any notes directly onto the pictures. Another feature is ‘track and trace’ where you can record lot numbers so, if there is ever a problem with any product, like the PIP implants, you can quickly locate which patients have had that particular product without having to trawl through hundreds of records. One of the other new features under development is an audit tool, which will make it easier for practitioner to audit themselves.

2. Work to a Goal Every Day! Any established retailer has a target that they aim to reach every single operating day. These targets are in line with realistic financial goals. As the saying goes, if you fail to plan, you plan to fail, and in medical aesthetics a sound and succinct financial and marketing forecast is one of the most important plans you can make. This plan goes over how to meet your intended financial goal, your weekly schedule, your marketing schedule and the cost of the each marketing activity. This plan is how do you chart if you are en route to meeting your goals or if you need to get back on track.

3. Learn About the Industry!

If you were opening a business in any industry, you would have to learn about it extensively in order to know what product to sell, where to sell it, who to sell it to, how much to sell it for and how to sell it. Unfortunately, new entrants to the medical aesthetics industry often forget these guidelines and lose a lot of money, time and energy. 3. Have marketing materials on display in your reception It is vitally important for your reception/waiting room to be stocked up with up-to-date marketing materials. Sometimes when clients are early they will flick through your promotional items and may even be persuaded to try different products. They might stumble across products that they feel a friend would benefit from, increasing word of mouth, which is one of the most trusted and cheapest forms of advertising.

Write a comprehensive job AND person specification Any new employee must fit with the ethics and culture of your organisation. You need to work out exactly what you are looking to achieve in your business by hiring this person. To help you do this you could think about what makes your best employee so good? Should you try and replicate them?

3. Don’t make snap decisions There’s a temptation to snap up a skilled person who can help carry out the treatments you want when you have a full diary.

But you may be trading that short-term fix for a long-term disappointment. What you’re really looking for in a great candidate are the qualities you can’t list on a CV – essentially brains and passion.

4. Try and get your preferred candidate to spend a day in your clinic or business You can only cover so much ground in interviews. Spending time with you and your existing employees allows both you and the candidate to make the right decision when it comes to hiring them.

5. Look after your employees Once you’ve managed to secure your new employee it’s important you look after them.

Offer them an attractive salary and benefits package. Don’t make them work every weekend or too many late evenings. Be fair. If an employee works late one evening, unpaid, let them come in late the next day. Give them a proper employment contract. Keep them motivated. And finally, make sure you tell them when they are doing well in their role.

You’ll be amazed how well they’ll respond to praise.

Make sure you have adequate insurance Whether you work as part of a clinic or as an individual practitioner it is important to make sure you have adequate insurance in place should the unexpected happen. Before you buy your medical malpractice or surgery insurance policy make sure you understand exactly what cover is included and what is not. This will help you recognise any potential exposure should the unthinkable happen.

All too often cover is reduced or excluded to enable premiums to be lowered. This can result in the practitioner being exposed to claims and ultimately left out of pocket.

2. Consider using a two-stage consent process If the treatment is significant, you should see the patient twice, giving him/her details of the risks/benefits at the first appointment and confirming and evidencing the consent at the second.

3. Break the consent form into clearly headed sections In cases where there are a number of risks to the patient, consider breaking the consent form into clearly headed sections with a signature box after each section to draw the patient’s attention to those specific sections and risks. Be aware, the more detailed the form, the more time consenting the patient will take, but consenting is not a process to rush.

4. Keep a copy of your own records If you are a practitioner trading mobile from a clinic and the clinic holds the records, it would be useful for the practitioner to also hold notes in the event of any disputes with clinics in the future. It is a condition that all records are kept for a minimum of 10 years in a secure place and backed up. Any patient has up to 3 years from the date of treatment to pursue a claim.

5. Do not admit liability If you receive notice of a formal claim please remember not to admit any liability at any point, enter into any correspondence without our prior consent or disclose that you have notified your insurers.

3. Ensure that your business has the appropriate accounting and software tools to record all incomeand expenses.

This will enable you to manage and control your business on a daily basis. A common problem is the recording and reconciliation of data received from billing agencies.

4. Use a qualified accountant HMRC are targeting high volume agents (HVAs) who submit high numbers of self-assessment returns that result in a repayment of taxes. HMRC have recovered an additional £30m in unpaid taxes from clients of HVAs due to incorrect submission of claims made on individual tax returns.

5. Keep comprehensive records Keep a record of all income (perhaps in a receipts book) as well as a record of all expenses/outgoings.

Include as much as you can when giving information to an accountant - Don’t forget a tax return includes details of all taxable income received such as bank interest and dividends.

6. Don’t leave it until the last minute Don’t leave it until the last minute because you may not have the money saved to pay your tax – remember if your tax liability is over £1,000, you will have to pay another 50% on account for the following year on 31st January.

After four long years in the process of change, finally, the laws that govern how cosmetic products are sold in Europe are about to tighten up. Beauty and Anti-Ageing Coach Antonia Mariconda shares her thoughts

“In a bid to create customer awareness and better transparency, new tighter EU rules will be enforced ensuring that manufacturers impart clear information that has an emphasis on the safety and efficacy of the product.

The new laws came into effect this summer, manufacturers of cosmetic products will be asked to clearly state under new guidelines the possible side effects of any product as well as the inclusion of any nano-materials which are frequently used in cosmetic products that are sun protection products.

I’m particularly pleased to see that under new regulations companies that make claims, and sometimes even (exaggerated claims) about their products, such as ‘wrinkles appear reduced’, will be expected to prove the validity of their statements by using six separate criteria, including considerations of honesty and fairness.

In a recent informationdaily.com article Enterprise Europe Network Midlands (EEN), the European Union’s sounding board for small and medium sized businesses (SMEs), warned that these guidelines apply to any and all internationally manufactured products which are sold in the EU. This is not the first major overhaul in safety and transparency, earlier this year Sir Bruce Keogh unveiled plans to reform the cosmetic interventions industry after 50,000 women were left stranded

after a health fraud crisis which involved the faulty manufacturing of breast implants that contained ingredients not fit for the human body.

The new EU rules have been introduced for safety reasons, and also to better inform people buying cosmetic products, I fully advocate that EU governing laws have a duty to ensure that consumers are being treated honestly and transparently in their choices, there have been far too many examples lately of greedy commercial exploitation of the vulnerable consumer. I have seen this mainly with skin related products such as acne ‘cure’ claims and anti ageing products claiming the eradication of wrinkles and facial lines with a simple tube or jar of cream. What is worse is that the general media will often ‘piggy back’ on unsubstantiated claims of cosmetic products, thus leading the unsuspecting public into believing that the product is a ‘must-have’.

on Twitter, if this or that product is ‘good’ or not, and I try to answer honestly and fairly. I am not paid by any cosmetic brand to endorse them, so I have the privilege of ‘freedom of speech’ through my independence, however it never fails to surprise me when I see so many people being literally ‘duped’ by what is very clearly misleading claims and clever advertising. The products that really do rile me are the so-called ‘botox in a jar’ gimmicks, I am constantly trying to explain that there is no such thing as ‘botox in a jar’.

A picture speaks 1000 words John Castro on why images on your website are important and how you should be using your before and after photographs

hey say a picture speaks 1000 words.

True or not, an imperative part of any website is it’s images. Some websites my team and I have produced have completely relied on the quality of the images we used to make it what it was. That is how important images can be.

However, it is how you use images to send a message to the user that matters. A recent study from Jakob Nielsen, the expert in webpage usability, found that “users pay close attention to photos and other images that contain relevant information, but ignore fluffy pictures used to “jazz up” webpages”.

Make sure you hire a web designer that uses

your website attractive and convert website visitors into website enquiries. This cannot be further from the truth. Yes, use images, but use them appropriately. Indeed, people want to see images, but they want to see relevance.

Jakob Nielsen’s recent study provided us with some key fundamentals to using images on our websites.

I thought it would be beneficial to list the ones that stood out to me and I thought are important to the aesthetic industry.

BEFORE AND AFTER IMAGES: An important fundamental error I find with some aesthetic websites is not supplying the user with before and after images. If you are in this business, having before and after shots on your website may encourage potential clients to call and book an appointment.

It’s the before and after images that help the user to see your work, gain trust with you and the overall benefits of the treatments.

Do not let lack of a camera stop you from taking before and after photos and putting them on your website. Today most smart phones can take high quality pictures that you can add to your website.

Also, do not let anyone convince you that you need “professional” pictures before you can put them on your website. Yes, professional is always good, but let’s not let that excuse stop us. Take the images and put them up on your site. They play a major part in

before and after images that help the user to see your work images to provide a message. For example, having a beautiful women to showcase some of your aesthetic treatments is fine, but if that section of your website is promoting anti wrinkle treatments, don’t put a lady in a bikini. It has no relation to what you are trying to promote. Common sense yes? You will be surprised how much this is not considered.

• Transmitted message – this is about the image sending the right message to the website readers.

the aesthetic and plastic surgery business. Recently, I had a friend enquire about some plastic surgery and she only called the companies that showed before and after images.

Do not bombard your home page with before and after images too. What we have found works best is slider image with one case study with a before and after image and a ‘SEE MORE’ button, which takes the user to a specific section on your website for before and after images.When we design our websites we also try to include a smaller section somewhere on the home page with a few thumbnails of before and after images along with a ‘SEE MORE’ button. This is not always possible when designing, as you do not want the home page too cluttered. Offer an easy way for the user to get to your before and after section without too much hard work, essentially with one click.

All about Eve

We find out what a typical day in the life has in store for Dr Linda Eve

I live in a beautiful house opposite the sea at Hengistbury Head . I wake up with glorious views of the sunrise over the sea and the Isle of Wight and then watch the magical sunsets over the Purbeck hills in the evenings. It’s a great place to live as it is invigorating and never dull though the view can sometimes make it very difficult to get out of bed when its a beautiful morning! I have two grown up sons of 25 and 28 yrs old. I am a very proud mother, My sons are still my best friends and we all have mutual respect, support and love for each other. I set my alarm at 6:45, however if I wake up before then I often take a walk on the beach, especially in the summer. Most days I simply enjoy a large cup of tea in bed, watching the sea while the day is quiet.

It gives me time to be calm and to think about the day ahead. I then regularly do 15 minutes of early

I drive to work most days by car and am lucky that it is only 10 minutes away so I never face any major traffic jams. I arrive at the Clinic at 8:45am and attend a short meeting with my Practice Manager and check the appointments scheduled for the day ahead. I then prepare my treatment room and ensure that everything is ready. My clinic officially starts at 9:30am and is normally fully booked with appointments ranging from 15 minutes for a follow up to an hour, depending on the type of treatment being given. This includes time for patient consultations, where I spend 30 minutes to thoroughly assess the patient’s needs and to discuss fully all the treatment options with them.Every patient

It is simply an amazing job that I feel truly privileged to be involved in morning exercises just to keep supple, important as I am getting older! My clinic is called EvenLines and I opened it in 2008. It is in Bournemouth on a main high street and we now have three treatment rooms.

I have 2 P/T Nurses who work with me so that I can offer a wide range of non-surgical treatments including numerous Injectables, Laser/IPL , RadioFrequency, Micro-needling , Dermabrasion and Peels etc.I also have three small clinics that I run in Spain. I started these about six years ago and now visit every 6-8 weeks.

has photographs taken before and after each treatment and these are immediately uploaded onto the computer and stored in their personal file.

It is an exciting and emotional time when you show the old and new photos to the patient and they see the changes….I love this part of my work! In between patients I respond to e mails, take phone calls and update my power point training slides.I usually take a 45 minute lunch break, though in reality this is usually 15 minutes for a quick and healthy snack and catch up with my staff. I then take the other 30 minutes for admin work, which is of course endless! My afternoons are usually equally as busy as my mornings! If I have time to take a tea break then I use this opportunity to scan the latest Aesthetic Magazines for interesting articles to read later.

I have always had an artistic side to me and I love new adventures and challenges! Coming from an artistic family I wanted to be more creative with my work and felt I was unable to achieve this working as a GP. In 2003, whilst working in

General Practice, I discovered the beautiful world of aesthetics! I could see that the industry was expanding at that time, and after a few initial training courses I realised that this was a route I wanted to pursue.

I love creating and restoring patient’s beauty, producing lift and volume and repairing the skin condition. I believe that good aesthetic work is all about producing a natural look with soft contours and radiant skin! I am so passionate about my work that often I still feel just like a child, excited every day by the results I see. The changes that my work brings in each patient’s lives, male and female, is amazing to witness, the trust they put in me , their loyalty, their resulting happiness. I cannot think of a better job for me right now than this one!

There is nothing I don’t like about my work, However, I do get annoyed and frustrated about unprofessional practitioners providing poor service to the public who then suffer the results of bad treatments. This year I was asked to be the UK Key Opinion Leader for Sculptra by Sinclair IS Pharma and to chair their UK Advisory Board. These roles are exciting and later this year I will be a speaker on the subject of the “Beauty of Sculptra and the Benefits of Cannulas” at the BCAM autumn conference in Oxford and the AMEC conference in Paris.

This year we were honoured to win the Dorset Venus Small Business Award for the most successful small business in Dorset run by a woman. It was a spectacular red carpet event which all the team at EvenLines attended and it was definitely an evening to remember!

I have always been rather a ‘workaholic’ simply because I love it! However, over the last year, I have made an effort to get a better work/life balance.

My final thought of the day? It is simply an amazing job that I feel truly privileged to be involved in.

For procedures such as laser-assisted tattoo removal, Pliaglis should be applied at a thickness of 1mm for 60 minutes. After the required time, the peel must be removed from the skin prior to the procedure. The maximum application area should not exceed 400 cm2. For facial procedures, Pliaglis should be applied by healthcare professionals only. Pliaglis should be applied with a flat surfaced tool, never with fingers. Pliaglis is for single patient use. Contraindications: Hypersensitivity to lidocaine, tetracaine, other anaesthetics of the amide or ester type, to paraaminobenzoic acid or any of the other excipients. Should not be used on mucous

membranes or on broken or irritated skin. Precautions and Warnings: Avoid contact with eyes. Treated area should not be occluded before removing Pliaglis from skin.

Should not be applied for a longer time than recommended. Local anaesthetics, including tetracaine, have been associated with methemoglobinemia. It is not recommended to use Pliaglis before injection of live vaccines as lidocaine has been shown to inhibit viral & bacterial growth. Use with caution in patients with hepatic, renal or cardiac impairment, and in patients with increased sensitivity to systemic circulatory effects of lidocaine and tetracaine. Avoid trauma to skin whilst under effects of Pliaglis. Interactions: No interaction studies have been performed. Interactions following appropriate use are unlikely as only low concentrations of lidocaine and tetracaine are found in the plasma after topical administration of recommended doses. Patients taking drugs associated with drug-induced methemoglobinemia are at greater risk for developing methemoglobinemia. Undesirable Effects: In clinical

trials, localised skin reactions at the application site were very common but were generally mild and transient in nature. Reported adverse reactions include: Very common (≥1/10): erythema, skin discolouration; Common (≥1/100 to <1/10): skin oedema; Uncommon (≥1/1,000 to <1/100): pruritus, pain of skin, pain; Rare (≥1/10,000 to <1/1,000): paresthesia, eyelid oedema, pallor, skin burning sensation, swelling face, skin exfoliation, skin irritation; Not known (cannot be estimated from available data): urticaria. Rare allergic or anaphylactoid reactions associated with lidocaine and tetracaine or other ingredients in Pliaglis can occur. Prescribers should consult the SPC in relation to other side-effects.
