The Alaev family

The first (and only, to-date) Israeli jazz pianist to record for ECM Records, Anat Fort is just about to launch her third CD for the label. Her ECM debut, A Long Story (2007), features Ed Schuller, Perry Robinson and legendary drummer Paul Motian. She has performed at major venues such as Birdland, The Blue Note, the Montreal jazz festival, the JVC jazz festival, Jazz Sur Son 31 (France), Belgrade jazz festival and many more. A prolific composer, she has received grants from Meet the Composer, The Jerome foundation and the Rabinovitch foundation and has been commissioned to compose for the Tel-Aviv Opera House, the Israel festival and the Biennial for Contemporary Music. Still settling back in her homeland after 17 years in NYC, she continues to perform worldwide with her international trio (Gary Wang, Roland Schneider) with whom she recorded And If (2010), and to establish her solo career.

The Alaev family -one of the most energetic musical outfits around, a virtual percussion-plus-much-more extravaganza . The Alaev family together with the talented musical producer Tamir Muskat ( Balkan Beat Box), added beats to traditional songs from Tajikistan (Central Asia), transforming them into world beat hits with the energy of Gypsy music. Since 2011 till now The Alaev’s have toured USA, Australia and Europe. They are headliners in many prestigious festivals ( WOMAD UK, PALEO, ROSKILDE, OUTOFDOORS, POHODA, KRAKOW, BabelMed Music to name a few) and creating a groovy buzz also in the hottest music clubs. Currently a documentary film about the Alaev Family “ The Kingdom of Papa Alaev” is in production and expected to be ready by 2014.

Noam David

ITAMAR BOROCHOV QUARTET

The band is a product of Noam David’s original composition. The Project’s name is “ The Letters Project” which enables the bridge between letters (gematria) and musical notes (numbers). Noam David plays the expression of the letters, the vibrational experience through different patterns from the world of poly rhythms and the spiritual melodic world.

Described by the Jerusalem Post as “A rising star in today’s jazz music world”, Itamar Borochov brings a unique sound with him wherever he goes. Deeply immersed in the Jazz tradition, Borochov’s search for his personal roots resulted in an ever-expanding love for Arab and PanAfrican musical sensibilities - a natural palette for a trumpeter-composer raised in Jaffa, an integrated Muslim-JewishChristian city. Mr. Borochov has performed in prestigious venues and festivals around the globe, such as Lincoln Center (NY), The Kennedy Center, (Washington DC), Summer Stage at Central Park (NY), Roskilde Festival (Denmark), Ethnoport Festival (Poland), Moscow Jazz Festival, and more. Nowadays, Borochov is quickly gaining international recognition as a young Jazz innovator. His music reflects on his rich global-landscape through the Jazz tradition. We can’t wait to hear where he goes next.

Noam David met Omri Mor (Pianist and Composer) around 13 years ago through Arnie Lawrence RIP. During this period they played together with Avishai Cohen, mostly in Jerusalem. In the last few years, Noam met Avri Borchov (Bassist) and they connected through the music. The band exists for two years and the first Album is on the way out. Maureen Nehedar

Adam Ben Ezra

Vocalist, composer and researcher Maureen Nehedar presents a selection of piyutim and songs from the illustrious musical tradition of the Jews of Iran, which she has documented and preserved in recent years. Nehedar has accumulated piyutim in Hebrew and Judeo-Persian, songs from different parts of Iran, engagement and wedding songs, lullabies, and harvest songs: a trove of ancient tradition of rare beauty that is quickly disappearing. Alongside these piyyutim and songs Nehedar will perform new works that she has composed using ancient Persian classical scales, with lyrics by great Jewish poets of the Golden Age and texts from the siddur. Her original melody for a prayer for peace from the Yom Kippur prayers (it is included in the piyyut album “Yehuda Halevy Corner of Ibn Gabirol”) was recently included in a Norwegian album marking the centenary of the Nobel prize for peace.

Adam Ben Ezra is an Upright Bass virtuoso, a composer and a multiinstrumentalist. In his captivating solo performance he delivers a one man show, morphing his upright bass into a multi useful instrument while presenting surprising singing capabilities and using a loop recorder to transform the sound into an experience of a full live orchestra. Amongst his memorable live performances is Grammy winner Victor Wooten’s performance in Tel-Aviv, in which Adam was the opening act and in front of a large audience at the 30 years anniversary of John Lennon’s death. Adam’s musical origins are varied – from classic and jazz to rock and world music. During the years he had developed a unique style to his Double Bass performance and today he performs solo in an act influenced by different genres such as ethnic, Latin, groove jazz and more.

Faran Ensemble

TATRAN

Faran Ensemble is a three member group, joined together on a spiritual journey of harmonies, sounds and landscapes. They use esoteric instruments of ancient Eastern cultures as tools for creating their compositions, where both East and West are present. We see music as a journey, accompanying man across mountains, dunes, forests, beaches, and all the way through to the ruckus of the urban route. Each note a milestone, each tone a path. Our music is a gift of the heart, wrapped in sounds and tied with a bow of delicate strings of the soul. Be the inspiration as it will; desert, ocean or city, they all speak of love. Love of places, people and life, for all the inspiration that they are. Music is a journey Each note a milestone

Three young musicians, three worlds combined in a fascinating original instrumental music ensemble. Members of this trio, twenty something, come from different backgrounds and create original compositions, a rich and crystallized mix of modern jazz, rock, classical, folk, avant-garde, electronica, and indie musical influences. Tatran presents melodic compositions with a unique sound approach, complex arrangements, mesmerizing grooves and a virtuoso performance alongside structures enabling boundless dynamic improvisation and telepathic communication on stage. This is indeed an underground band, however their dedicated attentive and expanding audience marks them as most promising in the Israeli alternative music scene. Tatran recently finished the recording of their debut album to be released soon.

The Apples The Apples are a musical metropolis, evoking international urban landscapes, built on traditional foundations, breathing hectic traffic, perpetually expanding, creatively progressing. The feeling that it could flow in any direction at any time and still keep a strong point of reference for the beholder’s ears, feet, soul and booty. The unconventional lineup unleashed stream-of-consciousness performances that combined heavy big band shouts with tight funk sensibilities and the instinctive weaving of a dj set. The inspired chemistry and varied backgrounds of the Nine musicians meant that they could impose the indigenous rhythms of the Middle East and the melodies of European Jewish heritage on top of American R’n’B, jazz and hip hop traditions, and enhance them with dubbed-out effectsoften within the same track- and have it all make sense.

The Zone Club After an extensive period of time in the depths of the Tel-Aviv urban underground, what started two years ago as a damp, musty basement for wild jamming in the dead of night; The “Zone” was born. Call it a living room, a boutique live music venue, a musicians community center, a placewhere music meets urban life. It’s like sitting in a living room and listening to the best music Tel- Aviv has to offer.

“Hagiga” sextet

Neta Elkayam Howa Jani

The Alon Farber- Dani Benedikt “Hagiga” sextet was founded in 2001 in Tel-Aviv, Israel. .”Hagiga” has participated in important festivals, such as the Tel Aviv international Jazz festival (2013), Paris Jazz Festival (2010), Red Sea Jazz Festival (2007), Jerusalem international Jazz Festival (2006) and more. Stylistically speaking the music of “Hagiga” is varied and crosses genres. You can hear the ensemble goes from energetic swing to Arab music to funk and to Latin Jazz. Nevertheless, “Hagiga” has developed its own sound along the years, sound that comes from the unique personality of each member of the group. The members of the sextet use these original compositions as a launch pad from which they take off to create a new and exciting atmosphere, spiced with the savory fragrances and flavors of the Mediterranean. The music of “Hagiga” is influenced by such artists as Wayne Shorter, Dave Douglas and Ornette Coleman.

They’re knowledge of Moroccan music comes from childhood, their homes, celebratory occasions and family. With one foot in the past, and all the while continuing to deepen their understanding the music, the group sought to revive Moroccan music at exactly the point at which it was halted. However, they also sought to remain true to themselves and write new arrangements for material that is relevant to today. Thus, the “Howa Jani” performance was born. The show is based on new arrangements of Moroccan songs, with an emphasis on the Jews of Morocco, and includes also original pieces. Among all the performances and projects that the group has been involved in, it was asked to spearhead the campaign for the 2012 Human Rights March and “Libi Ba’Mizrah” festival in Tel Aviv, the “Musrara Mix” festival in Jerusalem and was the leading performance in the 2013 “Festival Ba’Bait”, part of Jerusalem’s cultural series. Recently they were invited to perform at the “Festival des Andalousies Atlantiques” in Morocco.

Oy Division Oy Division play eastern European Jewish folk music the way it is ought to be played: rough, fast, happy, ecstatic, with no extra frills. The cracking fiddle, the crying clarinet, the shouts in Yiddish and Russian - you will not be sure if this music is tragically happy, or manically sad. And it doesn’t really matter, as you will dance with everybody else anyway, shouting the double-meaning Yiddish cry of OY!. The present is grim, Oy Division offers a chance of escaping forward into the past. Oy Division was formed by some of Israel’s top recording musicians - Eyal Talmudi (clarinet) is the reed player for the Balkan Beat Box, Avichai Tuchman (double bass) is an emerging record producer and alt-rock artist, Gershon Leizersohn (fiddle) is a prominent teacher, conductor and ensemble director and Assaf Talmudi (accordion) is one of Israel’s busiest record producers. > facebook.com/oydivision >> leizerson@gmail.com

Geva Alon & The Flying Baby

MEN OF NORTH COUNTRY

Geva Alon is one of most gifted, compelling and sought after Singer/ Songwriters and Guitarists in Israel. His first two albums “Days of Hunger” & ”The Wall of Sound” introduced us to his country flavored Americana, ethereal voice, and his trademark guitar playing. His third album “Get Closer” (2009 - ADA Global\ 2b Vibes) earned Geva “Male Artist of the Year” and “Song of the Year” award nominations and has recently turned Gold in Israel. Geva’s latest album “In the Morning Light” (2012 - ADA Global), was written after an intensive year of touring the globe, where he supported and played alongside many renowned artists including Paul Weller, Yo La Tengo and Depedro from Calexico. Both third and fourth albums were produced and mixed by wiz producer Thom Monahan and feature an incredible line-up of world renowned musicians. Geva was also recently voted one of the top 10 Israeli Guitarists of all time.

North Country is a state of mind. Men of North Country (MONC) emerged from Tel Aviv’s soul scene, bringing with them a fresh approach to creating the perfect three-minute soul nugget. The band started by chance, when soul DJ Yashiv Cohen was overheard singing along to the tunes he was playing at one of his Tel Aviv Soul Club parties. With the encouragement and eventual collaboration of his musician friends they formed Israel’s finest soul outfit. And whilst managing to stay true to their beloved 60’s Soul they also introduce a contemporary, fresh and personal twist. “The North” is an album rippling with memorable melodies, infectious hooks and refreshingly honest lyrics, which portray the band’s love of a genre in which they truly excel. Influences worn with pride: The Teardrop Explodes, Style Council and Dexy’s, but with an approving nod towards their 60’s favourites: Al Wilson, Robert Parker and Gloria Jones.

ADI ULMANSKY

ACOLLECTIVE

Israeli producer/singer/rapper Adi Ulmanski grew up in Jerusalem. Now residing in Tel Aviv, Adi released her debut mixtape ‘Shit Just Got Real’ and has since picked up plaudits from the Independent, Mixmag, Guardian, and Company Magazine to mention a few. She releases her follow up debut EP ‘Hurricane Girl’ on 19 August 2013 Influenced by the sounds of electronica in her childhood via her older brother, Adi branded herself as a rock metal kid and she says “when I finally heard Radiohead, I felt I’ve finally found what I want to do – a combination of electronic music with the warm sound of live instruments.”

Formed in 2008, ACOLLECTIVE is a 7-piece band and social movement, fronted by Roy Rieck and Idan Rabinovici. The band’s early shows became a weekly cult gathering in Tel-Aviv, and they were soon playing sold-out shows - establishing a loyal fan-base and gaining critical acclaim and extensive airplay in Israel – all this without any support or plan of any sort. Since 2009 they have toured all over Europe (playing this year’s Glatonbury, United Islands and YNOT festivals, and supporting Jose Gonzalez and Okkervil River), quickly earning a local following and a reputation for show-stopping concerts, wherever they are. Acollective’s debut album - ONWARDS, produced by Chris Shaw (Bob Dylan, Super Furry Animals, Guillemots), was released in March 2011. The band is currently in the studio working on their next album. Acollective is Acollective. Words are nice. Music is better.

Roy Dahan / Some of This Life

Garden City Movement is top notch electronic music project consisting of Joe and Roi formerly part of “Lorena B”. They’ve performed with Disclosure, Bondax, Blonde Redhead and Apparat to name a few. Johnny, the third member, is a well known music journalist, radio DJ and nightlife persona who has played alongside artists such as Floating Points, Koreless, Oneman and many more.

A new and unique voice has emerged in the independent Israeli music scene. His name is Roy Dahan. Roy began his career as a professional singer songwriter at the age of 30 . His musical journey began with solo performances at small venues and gradually developed into elaborate performances on some the country’s major stages, accompanied by his band. Three years later, Roy Dahan has already established an impressive reputation for himself within the dynamic local scene, with the release of his debut album, “Some of This Life” in 2011. In summer 2013 Roy’s new album, “The Man in My Head” will be released. With a rougher rock sound to it, including electronic elements, the new album expresses a more progressive side of his music. In April, Dahan performed at the ‘Liverpool Sound City’ Festival, and was the only Israeli artist selected to participate in this important international event.

Together, the three produce a blend of perfectly beautiful mixes drawn from their diverse cultural worlds. The result ranges from sweet hypnotic beats to ground floor based tracks. Following their signing with BLDG5 records, Garden City Movement released their first track “Move On” remixed by Teen Daze. It was embraced by the media and was featured on Majestic and BBC6. Indie-folk bank that was started by the duo: Gil Landau and Yael Shoshana Cohen. When you listen to LolaMarsh music, you are drawn into a perfect experience of a vast and thoughtful production, where the writing is a necessary part of its existence. The show itself feels like a wonderful dream from which you don’t want to awake. Yael’s deep, warm and slightly nostalgic voice, combined with narrative words and original melodies bring the listener into a special fantasy-filled world. After a year and a half of working together the duo met Mati Gilad (Bass) who joined the project, opened the door to a wider production. After him came Rami Osservaser (Guitar, Piano) and a short time later- Dekel dvir (Drums). The three newcomers aren’t new to the world of music in Israel and together with Gil and Yael have created powerful and surprising arrangements which greatly enhance the musical production.

21 years old, live in TA. I do Experimental Electronic Rock The first album released in 2011 as “Like Sheep (we run from ourselves)” The whole album was recorded in my home studio, very Lo-Fi back then. And I also did the Mix and the Mastering process for my self. This album is Indietronica / Lo-Fi / Rock The second album released in 2013 as “Goodbye” I recorded all of its tracks in my home studio again, But Yovav Arazi did the Mixing part, And Chris McCormack from ‘Blacklisted Mastering’ did the Mastering. Still Lo-Fi / Rock , but much more Electronic and Experimental. Most of the times I do solo shows, as a ‘one man band’ with a guitar, microphone, computer and samplers. I’m working these days with a drummer to try and combine live elements in the show. My influences are mostly Electronic / Psychedelic / Lo-Fi / Noise-pop.

20Δ13

BEMET

20Δ13 is a 4 member group creating music together for the last two years in Kibutz Beit Oren near Haifa, in the north of Israel. At the beginning the members met frequently, playing and jamming together live music with elements from electronic music. The project began in the studio while making Minimal/Techno/Electro tracks, but quickly the desire of playing and performing live conquered the work in the studio and the band started producing the electronic tracks and convert them to live explosive music, made 100% on spot without any digital involvement. These days 20Δ13 performs all over Israel in festivals, raves and clubs and released its first piece (“Home Made Riot” E.P) which contains all live instruments (Jan, 2012). On 2013, the band’s debut and long expected album shall be released.

Hod Moshonov (keyboards, Kyetar and voices) and Amir Bresler (drums and loops) are two diverse musicians, they first met in “Thelma Yelin” High School for the Arts. BEMET’s musical style is very dynamic, They sought to combine electronic sound, improvised music influenced by rock, jazz, experimental and psychedelia. Together they developed a language based primarily on rhythms, melodies and harmonies are open, and sense of humor. They combine their personal interpretation and thus form a statement honest and touching and true modern musical. Composition to date has collaborated with Laroz, MC REBEL SUN and Ruslan Sirota. Bemet got excited reviews on Midnight East Magazine and Ynet . Live performances of the ensemble varied, unpredictable and leave the audience with a powerful experience

MAYA BELSITZMAN & MATAN EPHRAT

Tamir Grinberg & His Band

The rising Israeli Cellist and singer, Maya Belsitsman, is becoming more and more popular. Mastering this classical instrument since the age of seven, Maya’s career is flourishing as she collaborates with many artists in the Israeli popular music scene including Yoni Bloch, Knesiyat HaSekhhel, David Broza, Mosh Ben Ari, Dani Sanderson, Nurit Galron, Ninet Tayeb, Rockfour, Efrat Gosh, Sheila Ferber and Miri Mesika. Together with drummer Matan Ephrat in a minimalist duo they create a most intriguing musical discourse incorporating Maya’s vocal talent. This is a personal and eclectic journey through favorite tunes from Israeli rock and original material to jazz and rock ‘n’ roll classics, skillfully arranged with imagination and panache.

Described as a young musical prodigy with “a voice that exceeds any realm of expectation”, Tamir discovered his own unique talent and deeply-rooted passion at an early age, brought him to attend and study at the school of art. The schooling eventually led him to form his very own eight-piece band while eagerly beginning to learn the creative process of writing, composing, arranging, and producing original music. Possessing an old soul and outstandingly distinctive raspy voice, Tamir was naturally drawn to the R&B, funk, and Blues to find his musical inspiration, marrying his youthful energy with an authentic, vintage sound, the result of which is music that appeals to a diverse audience of any age or generation, with songs such as “I Was Made To Love Her” and “Something” showcasing his passionate vocal delivery on stage while also exploring his unique songwriting ability that can be described simply as “timeless”.
