As far as restaurants go, At.mosphere has a lot to live up to. It is situated in Dubai’s Burj Khalifa that reaches a dizzying 160 stories into the sky, making it the tallest building in the world.

Diners are alerted to the fact that something special awaits when arriving at the glittering building. Entrance to At.mosphere is via the Armani Hotel, Italian fashion designer Giorgio Armani’s first foray into the hotel business. Even the restaurant elevator is not your typical office block lift: it travels non-stop at 65 kilometres per hour and takes just under two minutes to reach At.mosphere on the 123rd floor. Those who may be slightly overwhelmed by the elevators and stairs one has to take before reaching the elevator as well as the oppulence of the setting, will be happy to know that there is only one button: 123. But it all adds to the sense of occasion and helps to build the anticipation.

You won’t be disappointed. Although At.mosphere is not large and can seat only 80 guests, despite the hyperbole associated with its address, but the view is larger than life. Seeing the city and Arabian Gulf spread before you like this is no different to looking out of the window of an aeroplane, is nothing less than thrilling. Floor to ceiling windows add to the feeling that you are about to take off over the desert. To reserve a window seat, a minimum spend is required, and it’s worth it to experience what this restaurant is all about. If you stick to At.mosphere’s special – a juicy steak cooked in the Josper grill – then you’ll be impressed, and if you follow up with one of the excellent desserts, you might just be able to tear your eyes away from the view.


The decor and interior by Adam Tihany strike a balance between opulence and simplicity as not to detract from the view or the food. Lacquered mahogany walls and white tablecloths serve to create the elegant, understated atmosphere, a welcome contrast with the glitz and glam associated with Dubai.

Diners have a choice between ordering a la carte or a set menu, which starts with two courses and ends with At.mosphere’s seven-course signature experience. Both options focus on fresh produce and ingredients are sourced from around the world. It is very possible that your vegetables may be from Provence, lamb from Australia and lobster from Maine. Think sea scallops with Swiss chard and tomato gratin with truffle butter sauce, Brittany lobster open lasagne with sautéed spinach and curry cream, heirloom tomato and creamy burrata salad, and dame blanche profiteroles with pear cremeux and vanila ice cream. Alternatively, At.mosphere serves a three-course taster menu in the restaurant or tea in the lounge. Like the set menus, the teas come at a set price, which includes a bottle of bubbly. There is a choice of the traditional menu – berries and cream, chef’s delicacies and finger sandwiches, roast or fish of the day (for this is tea in the British sense of the word), patisseries and scones – or the vegetarian option tht has green pea tortellini or polenta with vegetables as the main course. All that arrives before you get to the actual tea and are served with an equally spectacular view. Bookings are essential for the restaurant and the lounge.

Roche Bobois believes that savoir faire and design are insperable: both give life to creation.

Roche Bobois’ story is about two families who were destined to meet one another: the Roche family and the Chouchan family. In 1950, Jaques Roche bought the old Alexandre Dumas Theatre in Paris and opened up his first showroom there. At the same time, the Chouchans emigrated from Russia to Paris and opened their own showroom called ‘Au Beau Bois’, a name which would later evolve into ‘Bobois’. It was in 1960 that the two pioneering families met at the Copenhagen Furniture Fair where they were both busy exploring the possibility of importing Scandanavian furniture to France. By 1961, they had already designed their first collection together and published their first publicity campaign in ELLE magazine. And like that the Roche Bobois brand was born. Nihiwatu has won a swathe of awards since it reopened in 2014 and in 2015 became a member of the prestigious Leading Hotels of the World.

After buying Nihiwatu in 2012, Chris Burch and South African born business partner, hotelier James McBride, began realising their dream of turning the resort into a sumptuous yet laidback escape. The 32 villas include the spectacular Raja Mendaka comprising five villas, each with its own pool, set in a sprawling private garden – popular with families – and Mamole Tree House that consists of three elevated villas connected by a bamboo bridge. Just one of the achievements of the Mamole construction team, is the infinity pool set among the treetops. Then there is Puncak, a three-bedroomed villa that resembles a traditional Sumbanese house – or Kunatar, a spacious two-storey villa with a private deck and infinity pool and open-air living room designed for couples wanting some alone-time. The range of accommodation truly caters for every type of guest and provides in every need.

Well-distilled, created and time-honoured cognac has always been synonymous with superlative sipping for the sophisticated palates of the world. But savouring the subtle flavours of a world-renowned Louis XIII Cognac is an exclusive experience. Unsurprising, when you consider each decanter takes four generations of cellar masters and over 100 years to craft. Inspired to pair the amber liquid with art in the form of a film called “100 Years – The Movie You Will Never See”, the cognac creators have teamed up with director Robert Rodriguez and French art de vivre enthusiast, actor John Malkovich, who also developed an original screenplay for “100 Years”. Louis XIII’s global director, Ludovic du Plessis said they were ‘thrilled that this talented actor and creative filmmaker were inspired to join us on this artistic endeavour’. 46

Which vision is closest to tomorrow’s reality? That will be up to those privileged viewers to both question and decide. In the meantime, you can ponder over teasers to help you determine.

Just as the Louis XIII’s cellar masters’ cognac creation will remain an unseen and untasted result, so will cast and crew featured in “100 Years” never get to see the movie’s final cut. At an exclusive preview of the film’s trailer in Los Angeles, Louis XIII and John Malkovich placed the film reel into a self-timing, state-of-the-art safe. Counting down the years, it will automatically open, sans key or code, 100 years from now. And those ticket-holding guests - who’s predecessors lived in 2015 - will be welcomed to the film’s preview along with Louis XIII’s future cellar master at the Domaine du Grollet in Cognac, France.

Founded in 1874 selecting the finest grapes cultivated in the Grande Champagne territory of Cognac in France, Louis XIII has withstood its reputable esteem as an ambassador of the French “art-de-vivre” since its inception. As each decanter that is crafted requires immense time, patience and knowledge descended through the generations, each drop of the ultimate end product encompasses and resembles as many as 250 flavours. Personal and bespoke details were incorporated throughout the day; however the true showstopper was the dramatic 3 meter high gazebo structure at the ceremony, adorned with lush white draping, elegant floral touches and a dazzling suspended crystal chandelier in the centre. The wow factor didn’t stop there for Jenni & Roy’s international guests; the hotel’s ballroom was

beautifully complemented with long dinner tables, covered with a combination of crystal vases, floral posies and ornate gold candle sticks. This look was perfectly tied together by the addition of magnificent floral arrangements that were placed down the centre of the tables. Each of the ballroom’s existing chandeliers had additional floral décor suspended from them ensuring the glamour quota was fully achieved!

Compromise is not a word recognised in the Rolls-Royce lexicon. Indeed the company continues to live by the clarion cry of co-founder Sir Henry Royce to “Strive for perfection in everything you do. Take the best that exists and make it better. When it does not exist, design it. Accept nothing nearly right or good enough.” The first part of this maxim – “Strive for perfection in everything you do” – guides the company’s every action particularly during the creation of a new motor car. This early morning darkness, where apparitions such as phantoms, ghosts or wraiths have been imagined, and where one’s apprehensions lurk, is brushed aside by an energising burst of early morning sunlight as one awakens to a new dawn and the endless possibilities of a new day.


To be a true Rolls-Royce, Dawn had to deliver the hushed driving experience associated with all Rolls-Royces Such was the feeling in 1952 as the world was finally emerging from a period of economic austerity following protracted war. That year, the world looked forward in hope as the world’s first passenger jet, the British deHavilland Comet, made its first commercial flight; the Big Bang Theory of the creation of the Universe was first propounded, and Queen Elizabeth II ascended the throne of the United Kingdom.

There is nothing more romantic than driving a convertible in the rain at night and hearing the drops pattering on the roof. In conversation with its customers, Rolls-Royce realised that they felt the same way.

The latent acceleration and tension in the surfaces are increased through completely new panels which evince curvature that creates a tighter surface and a more powerful silhouette which hints at what lies beneath. It is in this ideal setting that Ivy Du Toit, one of South Africa’s pioneer woman winemaker’s, and her family are keeping alive the tradition of vine growing and wine making that was started by their ancestors in 1844.

Jason’s Hill Private Cellar is a 5th generation family owned cellar that is tucked away in the heart of the Boland at the foot of the Slanghoek Mountains. With its fertile soil and Mediterranean climate the very best of grapes are produced for making award-winning wines. It is in this ideal setting that Ivy Du Toit, one of South Africa’s pioneer woman winemaker’s, and her family are keeping alive the tradition of vine growing and wine making that was started by their ancestors in 1844. Ivy’s interest in winemaking became clear at a young age when she started spending her time curiously investigating the activities at a nearby cellar. It was, however, only 108 108

after harvest seasons in America, France, and Italy that she decided to try her own hand at winemaking. During the harvest season of 2001 Ivy, then 21 years of age, enthusiastically phoned her dad from United States while working at a wine cellar to say, “dad, I want to make my own wine” and this is where Ivy’s journey began. In an old garage on the farm, with grapes from dad, Sakkie’s, produce and barrels bought with her savings money, Ivy made her maiden Shiraz in 2001. Everything from the picking, destemming and bottling was done by hand. This wine was matured in small new French, American and Russian oak barrels for 14 months, which ensured this limited release its own

First on the list was the 2015 Gold Wine Awards, which saw the estate winning four Gold medals. These were awarded to their Sauvignon Blanc 2015, Pinotage 2013, Cabernet Sauvignon 2013 and Shiraz 2012. Jason’s Hill won the Michelangelo Awards in 2015 for their Double Gold Award for the Izak Bordeaux Blend and Platinum Award for the Merlot.The competition is unique in South Africa, as all judges are invited wine experts from Europe, the USA, Australia, the UK and Asia.

Ivy went on to reap the success of her hard work and was named Diner’s Club Young Winemaker of the Year 2003 and Landbou Weekblad Woman Winemaker of the Year 2004. Today Ivy is living her dream of producing multi-award winning wines and sharing it with visitors from across the globe, making every visit to Jason’s Hill a memorable experience.
