Conceptually, the design consists of a series of stacked and suspended rectangular boxes, one embedding the building into the ground plane, the other suspended overhead to allow the living level to exist between the volumes. This summer house is set on the banks of Lake Huron in a small, remote Canadian town about an hour’s drive from London, Ontario. While the architectural context might be characterised as somewhat conservative “cabin country�, this house attempts to extend the possibilities of the traditional lakeside family retreat through a contemporary architectural approach, harnessing recent developments in design, technology and sustainability to connect meaningfully with its beautiful natural setting while exploring new ways of enhancing the lifestyle experience of the family summer getaway.

While the aesthetic approach that Cape Town-based architecture firm SAOTA took might seem like a radical departure from the traditional regional architecture, the architects have taken great care to keep the design unobtrusive and sensitive to its setting, while still making an architectural statement. The site is a bluff occupying the transitional space between water and forest, rising 3.5m from road level and then dropping down to the water to create a grassy embankment. The building is set back on the property towards the street to preserve the natural bluff. On approach, the


house is largely concealed by the surrounding mature fir trees, appearing as a simple light-coloured stone box floating effortlessly between the tree trunks. The rear of the house, facing Lake Huron, dissolves into a two-storey wall of glass washing natural light deep into the interiors. Conceptually, the design consists of a series of stacked and suspended rectangular boxes, one embedding the building into the ground plane, the other suspended overhead to allow the living level to exist between the volumes. An indoor/outdoor volume to the south anchors the building and maximises the site’s lakeside views while allowing the living spaces to occupy the foreground. A bank of bedrooms projects backwards above the garage.

The way in which the building is largely obscured from the street and in turn screens views of the lake helps build suspense on arrival, only to satisfy the Lake Huron sense of anticipation on entry via the large pivot door. From the threshold, a dramatic triple-volume atrium lets in natural light and draws the eye outwards towards the view. Programmatically, in keeping with the client brief, the spaces are fluid, the levels easy to navigate and the layout simple and well-structured, allowing for a casual atmosphere. The vast central volume is subtly contrasted with more intimate and contained volumes in the kitchen and

other living spaces for a varied and articulated spatial experience. The upper-level housing the master bedroom is devoted entirely to the owners’ private space, including an office and a gym. To the front of the house, a covered outdoor entertainment area flanks a swimming pool. A boardwalk and staircase descend to a refurbished cabin that predated the house, and now houses a guest suite and additional outdoor entertainment area to facilitate long summer days playing on the lake. The client’s favourite room is the ‘engine room’ on the lowest floor, which houses all the building services infrastructure. A commercial-grade Building Automation System (BAS) controls and monitors the home, ensuring optimum performance at all times. A 15kw solar array provides

power to the home and excess power is regularly fed back into the utility grid for credit and later use. The limited municipal infrastructure for stormwater and sewer resulted in an on-property underground stormwater system that can handle a 100-year storm and an eco-flo septic system to deal with all sewer requirements on site. The finishes, externally and internally, favour a ceramic panelled system robust and hard-wearing enough to prove long-lasting in the extremes of the Canadian climate, which together with the home’s energy efficiency and the general longevity of the project and its materials, components and fittings contribute to its sustainability. The interior decoration was by ARRCC, the interiors division of SAOTA.

Forged and turned in AISI 316L steel, a high-performance low-carbon metal characterized by good resistance to corrosion, the Luminor Blu Mare – 44 mm has a look that recalls in the clean, angular lines of the case the visual codes of the Luminor of the 1990s.

The first Luminor Blu Mare in the collection to feature a blue dial, it is enhanced by satiné soleil decoration along with hour and minute hands with a rhodium finish and with a view to respecting tradition – includes a strap attached to the lugs with the Panerai Screw System.

AFRICA’S TIME HAS COME Inventerpreneur Nechan Naicker

AFRICA - When describing the mysterious continent that spans from the Tropic of Cancer through the Equator and down to the Tropic of Capricorn, early explorers often used expletives such as “the Dark Continent,” and “in Darkest Africa.” Today we can attest that these loosely used descriptions were often used in ignorance, especially considering that Africa boasts more hours of bright sunshine annually than any other continent on Earth. On the downside, about 600 million Africans still lack access to reliable electricity today. Only seven countries have electricity access rates exceeding 50 percent, with the rest of the region having an average grid access rate of just 20 percent. Since there is a direct correlation between economic growth and reliable electricity supply, Africa needs power—clean renewable power, and lots of it. The good news is that Africa has an abundant capacity to supply this energy from renewable sources such as solar

and wind. Renewable energy can unlock major potential for African countries to create serious positive economic growth, leading to significant socio-economic benefits while also making a useful contribution to reducing Africa’s global-warming footprint. But renewable energy such as solar and wide is only effective when the sun shines or the wind blows. A critical component to providing reliable energy around the clock is battery energy storage. According to the World Bank: “Battery storage can help countries leapfrog to the next generation of power generation technology and expand energy access. For developing countries, this can be a game changer.” In it with this backdrop that Nechan Naicker has founded The Megamillion Energy Company to establish Africa’s first lithium ion battery megafactory. Chef David Higgs The Namibian-raised chef has had a career quite unlike any other. Entering the kitchen as part of his army service, he went from frying eggs for a hotel buffet to heading up the country’s number one, fine dining restaurant. However, it was perhaps his next move that saw him truly revolutionise South Africa’s dining culture with the opening of Marble Restaurant. Higgs, together with his business partner Gary Kyriacou, have redefined the idea of the “Joburg restaurant”. It wasn’t fine dining and it most definitely wasn’t small and intimate. It was a restaurant created for the people of Joburg – spectacular and sophisticated. The food doesn’t feature any foams, gels or spheres but offers a refined take on open-flame cooking – the idea, a nod to the age-old tradition of gathering around a fire, sharing stories and enjoying the company of those around you.

It’s a concept that has treated Higgs well, with his knack for knowing what Joburg wants and delivering on it, it led him and Kyriacou to open the Marble Group’s second offering, Saint, in late 2018. The Concours d’ Elegance 2019 took place on the 27th and 28th of July at one of the most remarkable venues in South Africa – The Durban Country Club overlooking the blue arm waters of the Indian Ocean. Concours Durban 2019 started with the judging of the participating vehicles on the morning of the 27th of July starting at 8am and concluding for the day at 2pm. This was followed by a first in Durban which was aptly named ‘Tour d’ Elegance’ and comprised of more than 50 classic cars parading on a tour of the city of Durban winding its way from the Durban Country Club through the beautiful M4 hugging the coastline to the Sibaya circle where after a quick refuel, the vehicles headed back into the city going through iconic streets and neighborhoods such as Chartwell Drive in Umhlanga and Florida Road, two of the most popular streets in Durban with great dining spots and bars lining the roads as the Saturday afternoon clientele ogled at the gleaming metal of the pristine classic car show gliding by their favorite restaurants.

An apt stop was the historic Audacia Manor which is a boutique hotel nestled in the tree lined streets of the historic Berea where the drivers took a much-deserved break and drink to catch their breath and take in the scenery of the beautiful city of Durban gleaming below. The vehicles then made their way back to the Durban Country Club for the overnight rest before the welcome cocktail and the main competition the day after. The welcome Cocktail party was a glamorous event held at the Durban Country Club ballroom and attended by the entrants of the Concours in Durban, Sponsors, invited guests and key business people in Durban and is destined to be one of the annual not-to-bemissed events on the social calendar. The main event was held started early with the gates opening at 8am on the 28th of July – a typically beautiful Sunday morning with the last of vehicles streaming in before spectators started coming in to view the classic beauties that graced the day. As the first early morning coffees were served in the paddocks, the final judging commenced to determine the ‘Best in Class’ as well as ‘Best of Show’ and this was a highly contested affair. Helicopter rides taking spectators on a tour of Durban from the air were as popular as the the Antique trading village that had on display and for sale some incredible memorabilia as well as vintage pieces. The local Radio Station ‘EAST Coast Radio’ was on hand to broadcast live from the event and the day proceeded with ease and a festive feel as the Big band hot the right notes for the afternoon. No doubt the highlight of the day was the announcement of the winners in each class and the overall winner which was won by a well-deserved Ferrari Dino belonging

TEAMS AND HANDICAPS A team consists of four mounted players and can be a mix of both men and women. Players are handicapped on a scale of -2 to 10, as determined by a player’s horsemanship, hitting ability, quality of horses, team play and game sense. The team handicap is the sum of its players’ total handicaps. A player’s jersey number reflects the position they play, with each number indicating a different objective. THE HORSES Although the real stars of the game are called polo “ponies,” the term is just a tradition; an old rule limiting their height was dropped in 1919. Today’s players prefer horses with a Thoroughbred’s speed and stamina in their bloodlines. These fourlegged athletes can run two miles in a single chukker: seven-and-ahalf minutes of starting, stopping, swapping from offense to defense in a single stride. The mane is shaved and the tail wrapped so that they are not entangled in reins, mallets and other equipment, especially when the horses are bumping shoulder to shoulder at 35 mph.

Du Wayne Denton is a world renowned wedding & portrait photographer based in New York City. Born in Cape Town, South Africa, he was inspired by the beautiful landscapes and the diversity within Africa. He started his own photography business, Du Wayne Photography, along with his wife, Zani Denton, in 2005. Their love for fashion, art and travel is the fuel that motivated them to move away from the traditional wedding photography and find their unique voice. They specialize in fine art wedding and fashion photography. Since moving to the US in 2018, Du Wayne & Zani rebranded their photography brand to Zäni & Duwayne to fit into the new market. With a multilayered approach that combines editorial, documentary, and fine art styles, Du Wayne & Zani intentionally capture clients in their most true, timeless form. Where did it all start? - “I always had a fascination with the visual arts from a young age. I studied photography

as part of my degree in graphic design at Cape Town University of Technology. It was in the darkroom that realized that I had a love for photography. Moving to America was a great opportunity to take our photography to the next level and to redefine our brand making it more exclusive. New York is city with such great energy and a life of its own. Everytime we get out on the streets or view the city from up high we get inspired again. never forget our roots in South Africa as this is what got us where we are today.” Du Wayne was a Fujifilm South Africa Ambassador representing their photographic cameras and equipment on a worldwide stage. In addition, their work has been published in a number of international publications, including Vogue India, Bride Vogue, Affluence Magazine and Bentley Magazine. He was also named Best Wedding Photographer in Africa in 2017. They have photographed wedding around Southern Africa and destinations such as Russia, Netherlands, Austria, Indonesia, Mauritius & Croatia. Zani has a degree in fashion design and also had her own fashion label in South Africa. Zani - “Both myself and Du Wayne brings something different to the our shoots. I have a fine eye for detail and styling while Du Wayne focuses on the bigger picture with his composition.

Your favourite country or location? - “It’s hard to pick a favorite since every place where we’ve photographed since every country has such great memories. But if we can choose two locations, it would be Bali and Croatia. Bali was such a great cultural experience and I felt like I learn such new lessons on humanity during my time there. Croatia had so much beauty within the country. The food, wine and beautiful ocean. ” Hightlights? - “Some of the highlight of my courier was being named Best Wedding Photographer in Africa 2017 and to be featured in Vogue India. This wedding of Azola & Zachary was nothing short of spectacular. The whole event was planned to be a feast for all senses celebrating spring and the change of season. We were planning for a 250-guest wedding with the ceremony area taking center stage. Walking to the ceremony area we had thousands of rose stems put in an empty field making it appear as a lush blooming garden, live music was leading the way to the ceremony area where we adorned the built in arbor with an ombre effect color palette of local and imported flowers. From that arbor, we planned for the first ever flying veil in Africa to take place – a spectacle that did not leave any guest sitting on their seat when the bride walked down the aisle. What a sight! The mechanics were heavily sensitive to the elements and we were ecstatic and relieved when the veil was flying successfully on top of the bride, the couple exchanges their vows and the guests happily moved to the pre-drinks area which was equipped with lounge pockets and for some that wanted to enjoy their inner child to the fullest there was an all-white petting zoo and jumping castle. Live music, African drums and a large sushi station, a liquid nitrogen 96

ice cream stand and a mobile coffee van allowed guests to indulge in the best of entertainment and treats. The reception hall was spectacularly designed with a white piano with dozens of white phalaenopsis orchids dropping down to the ground on the dance floor on which later on the couple started playing their own wedding dance song. The mirrored dance floor had a spectacular floral ceiling decoration as a welcome feature, the tables were set in an unusual star shape and were decorated with thousands of candles only. The ambiance was modern yet chic and the excellent dining experience and a night of laughter and dancing made it one to remember forever. How did he / she propose?- Boy, where do we start?!? I was graduating from university in London, Zachary used travelling to London to support my graduation as the perfect reason for both of us to travelling abroad on a non-romantic trip, as to not raise any suspicions. Two days after I graduated Zach made me believe we were going to an important function that his mother was hosting,

with a very specific dress code. Little did I know at the time that this was all a farce and in fact he had created an animated video of the key moments of our lives together which culminated with his animated character proposing to my animated character, and us in the exact outfits that they were on screen. He had set up a projector and gotten a chef to prepare us a meal at the garden of the official residence. After I said yes!!! We finished lunch, celebrated with family and friends that were there before he took me to watch our favorite play, ‘ The Lion King’ at the Lyceum theatre where they had arranged champagne and a special backstage tour for us as the newly engaged couple! A day topped only by our wedding! What was the highlight of your day? – Walking down the aisle, this was the happiest moment of the day for both of us, the flying veil was everything! It made the day into a magical Disney moment! We later found out that this was the first time anything like this was done on the continent, which is pretty cool. That and hearing one anothers vows. The vows made us want to cry tears of joy! How did it feel to finally stand next to each other as husband and

wife?- SURREAL!! Its still feels magical, the best decision we made was marrying one another! Where did you go on honeymoon? – The honey moon is still coming, were we would like to go to America, Japan and Jamaica (the Kingstons in Kingston) however, we went on a minimoon to do the Namaqualand trail, which is beautiful in the first few weeks of spring. Please provide a short description of your wedding day? – ABSOLUTELY AMAZING! It was the best day of our lives, it was the happiest day of our lives, the setting was beautiful and the joy and love our guests brought was tangible! Where did you get married and why did you choose the venue? – La Paris Estate in Franschhoek, South Africa. We chose the Venue by travelling to the Western Cape and scouting locations. YES! Inside, a bespoke diamond patterned satin chrome aluminium jewellery pack machined from solid sits

Carbon fibre machined from solid to create a technical finish clads the central console and door inserts, while an expansive single piece of herringbone carbon fibre can be found throughout the floor of the car’s storage area. Perhaps the most eye-catching feature within the DBX’s cabin is a unique carbon fibre finish used for the car’s floating centre console and door trims. Delivering a technical finish to the car’s interior, the central piece is machined from a solid block consisting of 280 individual layers of carbon fibre, laid meticulously by hand. After a 12-hour curing process, 90-hours of five-axis milling are required to deliver the stunning finish shown today.
