Spring is in the air again and we’re delighted to be back in Battersea Park for the latest instalment of the Affordable Art Fair. So far, 2015 has been a year of exciting developments and, as the new director of the Spring Collection, I’m thrilled to welcome you for what promises to be a truly adventurous edition of the Affordable Art Fair! This spring we’re delving further into what the UK gallery scene has to offer, with many of our first-time exhibitors specialising in somewhat tantalising aspects of contemporary art. Rosvik Gallery are showcasing their abstract and semi-abstract work, whilst Soho-based Atomica Gallery are delighting with their surreal, character-driven selections. Joining them are experimental photography gallery Lumitrix and London-based Cuban art advocates Ecilop. With these exciting additions, the fair reflects that the UK, more than ever, is at the centre of developments in the contemporary art world. These galleries are joined by many Affordable Art Fair favourites – both home-grown and international – so, whatever your taste, you’ll find a fair brimming with more variety than ever! We’re also thrilled to launch the second edition of the Project Space Collective, showcasing unique exhibitions by carefully-selected concept-led galleries and arts organisations, from Mayor’s Parlour Gallery’s neon spectacular to Contemporary Collective’s exploration of line (for more details see pp.4). This spring we’re also delighted to welcome mixed media performance artist Harriet Riddell as our Artist in Residence. She will be creating a captivating live record of the fair with her observational tapestries. In 2015 and 2016 CoolTan Arts will be our charity beneficiary, and we’re excited to be supporting their amazing work improving mental wellbeing through the power of creative practice (see pp.16). However, when it comes down to it, despite all these exciting changes the ethos at the heart of the fair remains the same. We’re here to make collecting art as fun, accessible, and affordable as possible. Regardless of whether this is your first or fifteenth visit to an Affordable Art Fair, we hope that you’ll feel free to explore, ask questions, fall in love and, ultimately, leave as an art collector!

COLLECTING ART We know that buying art is a unique opportunity for expressing yourself – your tastes, your personality, your interests – and we’re delighted that since the very first Affordable Art Fair in 1999, our visitors around the world have added over 405,000 artworks to their personal collections. Contemplating this amazing fact got us to wondering about the thousands of individual stories and decisions behind those purchases – why do people love to collect art? According to a survey by AXA Art last year, the top reasons why people collect art fall into three main categories: a love of beautiful things, an enjoyment of learning about art, and the chance to channel their passions through their collections. We decided to test

this thesis by asking some of our Affordable Art Fair exhibitors to share their stories and expert knowledge about why people fall in love with, and collect, art. Lara Bowen, the director of Brighton-based gallery FOUR-WALLS Contemporary, sees collecting art as a way for her clients to inject their homes with their own personalities. ‘William Morris said, “Whatever you have in your rooms, think first of the walls, for they are that which make your house a home.” What you surround yourself with when you come home reflects who you are, and where you’ve come from.’ She continues, ‘Artworks are memories made, they’re inspiration for your next day, right there on your walls. It’s an extremely personal thing.’ Edgar Modern’s gallery manager Ariel Klein agrees. She says, ‘our clients buy paintings and sculpture because they love them. They love how it makes them feel, they love that it makes them smile whenever they see it, and they love filling their homes with images that evoke emotions and mean something to them.’ She remembers a particular collector who instantly fell for a beautiful, powerful canvas by Henrietta Dubrey, of a brazenly nude female figure, unapologetically staring down at the viewer. The collector was a self-made business owner, and Ariel recalls her response to the work, ‘she told us that she always felt a disconnection between her shrewd business acumen and her own femininity, and that she felt she could see both facets of her personality reflected in the Dubrey painting.’

2

Angie Davey, the creative director of Eyestorm, shared a similar story of a client developing a self-declared obsession with collecting Jacky Tsai’s surreal, often dreamlike, prints. Following a conversation with the client, Angie learned that he was a psychiatrist. For him, Jacky’s prints were a map onto the artist’s mind, their surreal landscapes and abstract patterns reflecting his own deep-rooted interest in the processes of being. There are many reasons why people collect art, but ultimately, for our exhibitors and collectors it seems its value first and foremost lies in art’s power to enrich, enhance and express a sense of self. As Stuart Nields, the director of Edgar Modern, summarises, ‘people collect art to enrich their lives. Art has the power to change the dynamics of your home, it can evoke emotion, and prompt discussion. People build strong connections with art and the reasons why they choose certain pieces are as complex as they are themselves.’

mid-career artists – particularly those working with unusual mediums or concepts – with new audiences is a vital step in nurturing talent, and allows truly exciting contemporary practice to continue.’

We’re delighted to welcome an eclectic mix of concept-led galleries and arts organisations to the 2015 edition, carefully selected for their innovative representation of At the Affordable Art Fair we’ve always been current artistic concepts. Other participants include BEARSPACE, renowned for their support of artists working with canny cultural concepts, the Ben Oakley Gallery who will challenge the traditions of the gallery space by reimagining it in a new context, and Mayor’s Parlour Gallery, who will create a spectacular aesthetic experience with their neon extravaganza. Working alongside the South London Art Map, we hope our exciting programme of talks and tours for Project Space Collective visitors will offer an insight into viewing and collecting concept-led contemporary art. Julia Alvarez, founder of the South London Art Map, says: ‘The Project Space is an opportunity for galleries to present curated

projects that represent the ethos of their gallery. Emerging artists and galleries often work together to create an environment that draws the viewer further into the work – both the South London Art Map and the Project Space Collective aim to connect visitors with these galleries!’

MEET THE ARTISTS At this edition of the Affordable Art Fair our 112 galleries are showcasing artwork by a colossal 1,100 exceptionally talented artists. That’s more artists under one roof than at any other art fair in London, so you’re sure to be spoilt for choice! We’ve thrown the spotlight on four of our Affordable Art Fair artists to discover more about their practice, what inspires them, and their artistic careers so far. 1. What inspires your work?

AMY JUDD London-based oil painter Amy Judd has been represented by Hicks Gallery since 2009. Since completing an MA in Painting from Wimbledon, Amy’s work has received international recognition.

My work draws from the enchanting and imaginative nature of traditional mythology. I’m always on the look out for inspiration, and often find it in quirky, faintly macabre imagery or stories, sometimes from fashion, taxidermy, dark fairy tales and films. 2. How do you create one of your canvases? I use thin oils on canvas, using soft brushes to blend, and create a smooth finish. I work on several paintings at a time, as I need to let the paint dry after each layer, so the piece itself will develop over a month or two but the ideas and composition often take much longer. 3. Who is your favourite artist? It’s hard to choose just one. Gustav Klimt for his rich pattern and simple lines, and Max Ernst for his unsettling etchings of people with bird heads. More recently Michaël Borremans, for his beautiful loose paintings – he casts dramatic light onto vacant figures, creating captivating, atmospheric compositions. 4. Best moment of your artistic career so far? Having my paintings used in a 6-page spread in Harper’s Bazaar in 2014 was so exciting – that was a real highlight for me. 5. What does it mean to be shown at the Affordable Art Fair? I’ve been showing with Hicks Gallery for many years at the Battersea, Hampstead and Stockholm Affordable Art Fairs. I now plan my painting year by the fairs, and they’ve been a great way of showing my work to a large number of people in the UK and internationally.

13

KIRSTY MITCHELL

After a decade working as a fashion designer, Kirsty Mitchell embarked on her artistic career in 2008 and rapidly received international attention. Her painstakingly composed photographic projects have been shown with the Mark Jason Gallery since 2013.

bloom of wild flowers, autumn leaves, snow, the dawn light. The narrative of my work is driven by human connections and the grief I experienced since losing my mother. Finally, I’m inspired by Alexander McQueen, Andy Goldsworthy, the Pre-Raphaelites, and religious iconography.

1. Who or what inspires your work? 2. How do you create one of your artworks? Blurred memories of books my mother read to me as a child, illustrated by artists such as Errol La Cain, Pauline Martin and Jan Pienkowski. Nature is also vital – the

I make all the costumes, props and sets within my images. I design the entire scene from scratch, then assemble it like a small film set – it can take months to make everything for one image. The process is very long, involving costume design, location scouting, model casting, waiting for the weather – most people are quite shocked to learn my images are entirely real. Photography is seen as something instant, but my work is far from it. 3. Best moment of your artistic career so far? There have been so many highlights over the past five years – being on the BBC news, getting published and exhibited by Italian Vogue, winning international awards. But honestly, the greatest ‘moment’ was the personal awakening producing this work has given me. It’s given me more awareness and empathy, and opened my eyes to the beauty of things often overlooked. 4. What does it mean to be shown at the Affordable Art Fair? I’ve shown at the Affordable Art Fairs in London, New York and the Netherlands. The Affordable Art Fair team’s support of my work has been really wonderful, including the reaction from Will Ramsay, the Fair Founder, which was a huge compliment!

BERNHARD EBERLE

Bernhard Eberle is one quarter of Munichbased artist collective Dreipunkt Edition who have been working and exhibiting together since 1998, and first showed at the Affordable Art Fair in 2007. Having trained as a lead type printer, Bernhard developed an interest in producing artworks, particularly prints, on paper. 1. Describe your practice: I work as a printmaker, and my preferred techniques are linocut, collage, and letterpress printing. 2. What inspires your work? My inspiration lies on the street – in the signs, the text, and the traces of life. I collect everyday ephemera, for example old rusty

crown caps. I look at the different coloured lines painted on the streets to manage traffic. It is like modern art. 3. What’s unusual about your practice? I usually print without a printing press, my tool is just a spoon – when you print four or five layers on top of each other like this you get a really astonishing texture. However, producing one of my works in this way is a long process. If I’m printing an edition of twenty pieces, for example, the first layer has to be done individually on all twenty prints, then left to dry overnight before the second layer is applied. Everything is printed by hand, sometimes with as many as eight colours. 4. Best moment of your artistic career so far? When the Department of Prints and Drawings at the British Museum bought some of my artworks. 5. What does it mean to be shown at the Affordable Art Fair? My first Affordable Art Fair was here in Battersea in 2007, and since then I’ve also shown at the fairs in Brussels, Amsterdam and Hamburg. I love that in each country visitors have a different relationship to art but still love to buy it. I have to say, my favourite Affordable Art Fair is still Battersea – the clients here are open-minded, curious and love to buy unusual pieces. Showing at the Affordable Art Fair is a beautiful way to get in touch with new clients, particularly those who don’t often visit galleries. I love it.

15

SAM CARVOSSO

Sam Carvosso is making his debut at the Affordable Art Fair this spring with CONTEMPORARY COLLECTIVE, who are showcasing his work as part of the Project Space Collective. Since graduating from Brighton University with a BA in Sculpture last summer, Sam’s eclectic sculptural installations have been widely exhibited around the UK.

1. Describe your practice in three words: Illusive, ambiguous narratives. 2. What inspires your work? Artists, land formations, charity shop items, everyday objects and scenarios, anything that captures my interest. I take these everyday experiences as the inspiration for my sculptural work, creating ambiguous narratives through titles and modes of display that refer to my nostalgia for these things. 3. How do you create one of your artworks? My work is usually sculptural, I often use steel eclectically combined with various items from large photographs and taxidermy parrots, to cacti. A lot of the time I work by playing with objects and sculpture in order to discover new ideas, a process which can take days. 4. Who is your favourite artist? I can’t decide on a single artist, but if I had to name some these would include Richard Deacon for his playfulness with form, Philip King’s use of colour, Steven Claydon’s use of titles, and Rachel Harrison’s use of display. 5. What does it mean to be shown at the Affordable Art Fair? As a recent graduate it will expose my work to a large audience, helping me at the start of my artistic career, and to show as part of the Project Space Collective will be a great opportunity to work with other emerging artists in the arts hub that is London.

We’re delighted to introduce pioneering arts and mental health organisation CoolTan Arts as our 2015 & 2016 charity beneficiary. Emma Thatcher of CoolTan Arts tells us about their story and the amazing work they do to promote mental wellbeing through creativity.

CREATIVITY AND WELLBEING THE COOLTAN WAY CoolTan Arts takes its name from the CoolTan suntan lotion factory in Brixton where our studios were originally based. Thousands of people from across London got involved in the CoolTan project which included a huge gallery, a performance space, welding workshops, photography, and our famous fundraising rave parties. From day one, CoolTan has been a participant -led organisation, run by and for adults who have experienced mental distress. We became a registered charity in 1997 with the aim of using the arts to promote mental well-being, and nearly two decades on, CoolTan runs a vibrant community arts centre in Walworth Road, Southwark. CoolTan does not offer the medical model of traditional ‘art therapy’, but we believe passionately in the therapeutic power of the arts. Making art in a group can be a cathartic, fun, and exploratory form of self-expression and self-growth, and a great way to connect with others. It’s why we give participants the space to develop their artistic voice at their own pace, explore new techniques and mediums, and share difficult feelings and experiences in a friendly, safe and supportive enviroment. Our tutors create a pressure-free atmosphere where participants can learn new skills and have a chance to develop their own artistic practice. We offer a wide-ranging programme of creative workshops,

self-advocacy training, art projects, stigmabusting cultural walks, a public art gallery, and an inclusive volunteering programme. Weekly workshops include poetry, art, textiles, cooking, photography and filmmaking, all providing our participants with a friendly informal atmosphere to learn and self-heal. Feeling less isolated and having a meaningful activity to look forward to goes a long way in enabling our participants to reconnect with the wider world and stay well. One way we do this is by creating regular opportunities for those with mental distress to engage through our many public events and exhibitions. One long-term participant said:

‘CoolTan has given me purpose. If you have purpose, then you have meaning. And if you have meaning, recovery is not only possible, but probable.’ Entering a more informal atmosphere, one away from more mainstream mental health services, encourages the engagement of people who do not want to be labelled as ‘mentally unwell’ but who might still be in need of support. Through creative work, they start to build an identity as an artist,

17

someone who feels they have something to say and share with society. For those who may have experienced unhelpful stigma or value judgements because of their mental health, this can be an empowering new experience. With a unique approach to dispelling stigma around mental health, CoolTan really does change lives. We’ve displayed our artists’ work publicly in mainstream spaces including, so far, the Tate Modern, the BFI, the Globe Theatre, the Charles Dickens Museum, South London Gallery, and many other prestigious venues across London. Having the opportunity to develop an identity as an artist and build confidence, many of our participants move on to volunteering or working for us, and others go on to further education or employment. Over our 24-year history, CoolTan Arts has gone from strength to strength, expanding our output but never losing sight of our founding belief in the power of art and that mental health needn’t be a barrier to this. Despite severe funding cuts, we continue to work with thousands of individuals face-to face, with thousands more attending CoolTan events on a yearly basis. If you would like to support CoolTan Arts, please go to www.cooltanarts.org.uk, or visit us on the charity stand at the fair.
