SLES LAUNCHES ONLINE LEARNING

Afford’s SLES trainers work in partnership with trainees to support them to realise their strengths and help them work out ways to use their unique talents and abilities to find a suitable job. Due to COVID-19, a lot of our SLES participants have chosen not to attend the sites. So, SLES Trainers and Employment Supports Manager, Symone Marjanovic, banded together to implement a new initiative to keep our trainees on track with their program goals and launched SLES ONLINE! SLES ONLINE went live on the 14th of April and has been a huge success with between 16 - 18 participants joining! SLES trainers have been working hard and have successfully converted our SLES modules into online E-Learning modules. Trainees are sent the online learning schedule once a week outlining the upcoming sessions. Using the Zoom platform, trainees are able to log in to two sessions a week on either Monday, Tuesday or Wednesday. The trainers run sessions through a virtual classroom and have even included a “Social Friday” option where all SLES trainees can log on for fun interactions with their SLES friends. The Zoom platform is a fantastic way for our trainers and trainees to keep in contact and offers them a way to connect with friends. “I love SLES ONLINE, because I can still learn and I love seeing all my friends, otherwise, I would be sitting at home bored because of the Corona Virus”, said Brody Maddern. It is essential we offer continued learning opportunities though isolation and the team has been able to deliver that service seamlessly. Through their ingenuity and the use of technology we can ensure our SLES trainees continue to strive towards their work and life goals every day.

Staff Matters SOUTHPORT HUB’S FAMILY TREE Getting crafty and expressing ourselves through creativity is very important. There are many ways you can get creative at your sites and we have recently seen our Southport Day Program get crafty by connecting their clients and staff together through a family tree mural. The idea to paint the family tree was organised by Southport Day Program clients, Chris McKenzie and Jess Timson. Within the limitations of social distancing, Chris and Jess put their idea into action and drew the outline of the tree before they began painting. The project was completed over 3 days with the support of staff. Staff also assisted Chris and Jess to make some cranes to hang from the tree. Clients and staff took turns to paint their names onto the leaves. Love the creativity happening at Southport!
