laurent martin “Lo” bamboo sculpture

“Lo” Born in France in 1955, Lo studied design and worked as an art director in fashion and advertising. In 2000 he discovered the fascinating world of bamboo, falling in love with the material, its versatility and texture. In 2004, he left his former life behind in order to take on his personal “Bamboo Road”, travelling to remote areas in India, Thailand, Laos and Vietnam to live with people who use this natural resource as their principal building material. This exciting trip showed Lo that not only is bamboo a sustainable alternative medium applicable to architecture, industry and many other areas such as medicine and health, but also a means for creating art and communicating feelings. A tireless researcher of the different uses of bamboo Lo is currently about to travel to the Amazonian jungle in South America to enrich his palette as well as his knowledge of bamboo.

Lo’s creative process arises from the technical sensory and spiritual values of bamboo. He explores its lightness, balance and flexibility, as well as the mathematics peculiar to bamboo, retaining its poetry, sensuality and nobility.

Suspended in space, others on a subtle point of support, they speak of harmony. They invite us to establish a dialogue with ourselves and the outside world through spirit and matter, in search of inner balance. Lights and shadows, movement and stillness, sound and silence, resistance and flexibility, full and empty, femininity and masculinity ... opposite concepts, but nevertheless complementary.

From the contradiction of fullness and void, existence and non-existence, the artist constructs his seductive sculptural mobiles, drawing out of the air threads, weights and counterweights like a musical score, enabling this medium’s elegant, airy and organic calligraphy to dance before us.

the bamboo road

Aided by BWO (Bamboo World Organization) I am preparing the second chapter of my "Bamboo Road" through Mexico and Brazil, to Nicaragua, Honduras, Costa Rica and Colombia.

The structure and gender diversity of bamboo has been used to work on small and large scale. In Central America the traditional use of bamboo’s hardy character, such as Guadua bamboo, has lead architects and engineers to use this material as a sustainable alternative in construction, combining its properties with contemporary techniques. Along the way I am planning to meet members of the international bamboo community currently investigating this field. My goal is to learn and to interpret their findings and apply them to my sculptural work, and develop new projects in the field of architecture and modeling space.
