Bendigo Community Bank MPNFL Update Round 2 2017 Here we are at Round 2 or the Easter Round as most people will know it by. Plenty of action across the peninsula this weekend with games across the whole weekend, from Good Friday, Easter Saturday and Easter Sunday! Enjoy this time of the year with your family and friends, if you decided to have a few drinks while at the football or netball make sure you do so responsibly, there will be an increase police presence down along the peninsula, so certainly think about how you are traveling to a from venues.

A reminder of a few themed and feature rounds coming up; 14th- 16th April 2017 – Round 2: Easter Weekend 22nd April 2017 – Round 3: ANZAC Round 29th April 2017 – Round 4 6th May 2017 – Round 5: Community Umpiring Round 13th May 2017 – AFL Victoria Community Championships With all that said, we hope you enjoy your local football and netball this week, and have a Happy Easter. What a week round 1 produced not only with results but also what mother nature produced. There were 4 games in total called off after three-quarter time, due to the inclement weather. So we hope that this week you have the umbrella packed and ready to go, in case it gets wild again. There is now only 5 more weeks until the ultimate battle between ourselves and the Geelong FNL to claim the number one title in league rankings though the state. The AFL Victoria Community Championships will certainly be highlighted this year having the 1v2 game at the MCG. Please stay tuned for further details in the coming weeks. Bendigo Community Bank AFL South East Structure Update

Governance

Chairman Roger Hampson on Tuesday 11th April, announced important additions to the AFL South East governance structure. The Region General Manager position has been filled by John Anderson, who has been in the interim role since January, now being appointed to the role on a permanent basis. John has been involved in key projects since taking the interim role and we are very pleased to advise of his ongoing appointment following a competitive process conducted by the Commission in conjunction with AFL Victoria. John’s most recent experience has been as CEO of Harness Racing Victoria and prior to that as CEO of the Melbourne Football Club. There have also been two appointments to the AFL South East Commission to fill AFL Victoria approved vacancies. The new Commission appointments are: Molina Asthana: Molina is a Principal Solicitor with the Victorian Solicitor General’s Office, who also holds several Board positions within the legal profession. Molina is an AFL Multicultural Community Ambassador and on the AFL advisory Committee for multicultural engagement. She is also Founder of the organisation Multicultural Women in Sport which aims to empower migrant women from multicultural backgrounds through sport. Anita Jonceski: Anita has extensive experience in State Government Departments, predominantly with the De-

partment of Justice, in the area of strategic communication. Anita’s most recent experience is as a communication advisor within the Commission for Children and Young People with responsibilities in the areas of Child Safe Standards and Reportable Conduct. Like Molina, Anita has professional skills which will be valuable to the Commission in important areas of communication and child safety. Mr Hampson said that these appointments add value to the AFL South East Commission particularly in the management, legal, communications and multicultural areas and we wish Molina, Anita and John well in their new positions. Other recent additions to the Commission have been representative appointments for the respective competitions, namely Doug Bailey (SEJ) and Ryan Ford (SEFNL). Bendigo Community Bank LOCAL GOVERNMENT FORUM STRENGTHENS FOOTBALL’S FUTURE The future of Australian Football in Victoria is bright, following the success of AFL Victoria’s Local Government Forum at Punt Road Oval last month. More than 90 per cent of Victoria’s Local Councils, along with representatives from other key sporting organisations were in attendance to discuss future planning for football across the State. Created in 2013, the biennial event was designed to showcase the strategic direction of football in Victoria and acknowledge the important role that Local Government plays in the development and growth of our game. Hosted by Nicole Livingstone OAM, representatives heard from key community football presenters about AFL Victoria’s range of programs, designed to increase and strengthen participation in every corner of the state. AFL General Manager of Football Operations Simon Lethlean, Richmond CEO Brendon Gale, AFL great Matthew Richardson and AFL Women’s stars Alicia Eva and Lauren Arnell were also in attendance to discuss the importance of the health of community football to the development of our game at the elite level.

Outlining the direction of Australian Football in Victoria for the next six years, the documents summarise AFL Victoria’s role in facility provision and identifies the key strategies to support football at all levels right across Victoria.

Nepean Preview Gotta love Easter footy! By Toe Punt Hoppy Easter everyone!! Whether you are at the footy on Good Friday, Easter Saturday or Easter Sunday, I hope you enjoy a wonderful long weekend with local footy very much part of it! For everyone’s sake, let’s hope that we finish four quarters of footy without interruptions today – what bizarre circumstances they were last weekend and something we have never experienced before in my time covering the game. Easter football all started with Dromana and Sorrento many years ago and now all clubs have embraced the concept. The 3RPP Match of the Round on Good Friday is between Pearcedale and Frankston Bombers. Pearcedale will roll-out Sydney Swans premiership captain Barry Hall this afternoon. They were super lucky to get a win last week after hitting the front and the game being called off shortly after. Regardless, a win is a win and you need a bit of luck in this game. The Dales will certainly have their work cut-out for them today against the Bombers. The Bombers dismantled Dromana last week and went into the match below full strength, however, still managed 30 scoring shots in trying conditions and recorded an 11plus goal victory. Even contribution is the mantra at Bombers and nine goal kickers last weekend would have been pleasing for coach Beau Muston. Quentin Newton was a shining light in his first game and Corey Buchan fitted nicely into his new strip. Jason Kingsbury is one of the most underated players in the competition and continues to play outstanding footy while Sam Fox and Dale Sutton have picked-up where they left off last season. Frankston is a class above the Dales and even with ‘Big Bad Bustling’ Barry Hall, they will fall short. There is no bigger rivalry than Rosebud and Rye and they do battle also on Good Friday. Rosebud will go into the game without Ryan Spooner, who has a wedding, while Brenton Davidge dislocated both kneecaps last week and is unlikely to line-up. Matt Baker is a likely started after being on holiday, however, will be underdone. Rosebud is playing a new press-up game style under their new coach and whilst it will take some teams by surprise, it may take some time to get it right. Rye was super for a half against Hastings after showing terrible pre-season form and they should get some confidence from that. Both clubs bring the best out in each other at Easter and

Bendigo Community Bank this game will be no different – Rosebud to shake-off a persistent Demons. Tyabb host Somerville in the third Good Friday game. The Yabbies were embaressed last week by Crib Point in a game many expected them to win – surely the Yabbies have improved from 2016? An influx of recruits suggests they should be better! In the corresponding game last year, Somerville was lucky to get away with a win. Somerville was very good against Red Hill last week, especially in the third quarter when they took advantage of the wind. Andres Everitt didn’t have much of an impact but it is going to take him some time to adjust to the tempo of local footy – he’ll get going as the season rolls on. A wrist injury to ruckman Justin Farrelly is expected to keep him out for a while Rohan Hogenbirk has a broken arm and will miss a bit of footy. Regardless, the Eagles silenced some critics last week (yours truly included) and under new coach Bevan Malloy, he’s formed a tight group who are playing good footy early. As stated, the traditional Easter game has always been Sorrento v Dromana and this is the 3RPP (98.7FM) game on Easter Saturday.

The Sharks opened-up nicely last week without doing anything ultra-special – unless of course you were watching Nick Corp, who owned the footy. Chris Dawes will miss another three weeks with a hamstring injury, while Daniel Grant is also missing with a hamstring concern. Young gun Jayden Tompkin, who shone in practice matches, will return to the forward line today. Dromana was less than ordinary last week and coach Rikki Johnston didn’t hide his feelings after the game to his players. Talk early in the week was that Sorrento was expecting Sam Fowler (Nth Ballarat) to be playing for the Tigers, which would be handy if it did happen. Height and body size is still an issue for the Tigers and they’ll be outmuscled today by Sorrento. Devon Meadows would still be seething from last week after leading Pearcedale for most of the day and having the game called-off just as the Dales hit the front. Things don’t get any easier though coming-up against Hastings. The Blues took a while to click into gear last week against Rye, trailing at half time, however, got going in the second half, booting 12 goals to four. Luke Clark played one of his best games for the Blues with six goals in a dominant display while Shaun Foster had no problem swapping the cricket bat for the footy boots.

Bendigo Community Bank The Blues are still missing coach Brendan Dunne, as well as fellow premiership players Scott Janson, Jay Austerberry and Terry Green, while recruits Jack Williams and Josh Comi are yet to surface yet. The Meadows were a very different looking side but still have supreme top end talent in the likes of Jess Dehey, Stef Baumgartner and Curtis Barker, while Steve McInnes is elite (five goals last week) and Allan Murray provides plenty in attack. The likes of Andy Kiely, Kyle Salerno and Jesse Bowe also make the Meadows a dangerous outfit. It’s the bottom end that will catch them out though and that’s why Hastings will chalk-up a win. The stand-alone game on Easter Sunday is Red Hill hosting Crib Point. The Hillmen couldn’t contain Somerville against the breeze in the third quarter and Crib Point punished Tyabb. Chris Irving was used up the ground in the second half last week and you can expect his to spend more time there this week. Jonah Siverson outgunned Everitt and Michael Mock was superb down back also. The Pies top end talent too his extremely good and it’s not going to be a walk in the park for the home team. Waide Symes booted eight and Taylor Stratton returning from a knee reco booted five last week and they’ll need to be stopped while Luke Herrington, Dean Warry, coach Brad Arnold, Paul Dadds, Mitch Standsborough are all quality players at their best. The Hillmen should win at home.

Last week at Hastings, no wins in the footy, however some great signs from our young senior team, with one sloppy quarter letting us down. While the U/19’s only had to kick straight to have a win, but full credit to Hastings who were a little cleaner and more direct. It doesn’t get much bigger than our Good Friday game today against Rosebud, playing for the Appleford / Luck Trophy, which we currently have in our cabinet and we desperately want to keep. While the BOG today wins the Luke Cain medal. Tonight, all supporter are welcome along with the players and families to our annual “Player Auction” Night for both the Footballers and Netballers. Bid for your favourite player and win big during the year, 7.30pm start. Great to see Tim Churchin have a fantastic game last week against his old side, Timmy was happy to get that one out of the way. Our Skipper Adam Kirkwood was sensational, along with Jimmy Apps, H “man” Whitty, “Animal” Cole, and Morse Code. The reserves need to switch on today from the first bounce, as that 1st quarter last week cost them big time. Great games from Doogie, Pistol Pete Hampton, Rima, Mazza and Zac Little. The Unders had a real dip, going down by 12 points, Robbo, Jayden Thomas, and Ben Closter, were super. Barnsey, Gus and Swayny all had a crack. Today we head down the highway to take on our arch rivals Rye in the annual battle for the Appleford-Luck Trophy. This is match is hands down the most eagerly anticipated and usually the most attended fixture in the Nepean competition and this week is no exception. Last week’s opener against Sorrento started bathed in sunshine but finished with some of the most trying conditions seen for many years – including a 15 min interruption during the third quarter due to lightning. The highlight of the day was 2-time senior premiership player Brenton Davidge running out for his 200th game for the Buds, comprising 166 1st XVIII games and 34 2nd XVIII games, and in so doing qualifying for Life Membership of the Club, a fantastic achievement! The Under 19s got the day off to a positive start with a victory over an undermanned Sorrento outfit but unfortunately the Development Team and Seniors both went down to a well drilled Sorrento outfit. All three teams have plenty of room for improvement and we will be looking for that today. Well done to our netballers with our A, B & C teams all starting the season with a win! Welcome to our first Good Friday game. It was a case of not good enough from the 22 senior players last game against the more desperate Crib Point. We needed to work harder and smarter for all 4 quarters and the squad have stepped it up at training to improve their intensity and attack on the ball. Congratulations to Jack Doman on his first senior game for Tyabb. Today we take on Somerville for the Bungower Shield and expect a real red hot go from the group. With nine changes to the development team from last week it was going to be a good test for the new found depth at the club. In an even start it was a strong 2nd quarter with tight defensive pressure & some good foot skills saw us take a three goal lead into half time. The good work upfield was capped off with some straight goal kicking from Dimkos(4 goals) and Burstall (3 goals). Despite an ongoing battle with injuries of late, we are proud to have celebrated Matt Dimkosâ&#x20AC;&#x2122; 100th club match in our opening round against Hastings, a wonderful achievement for a great clubman. The weather was magnificent when the U19s kicked of the season at the Nest! The weather didn’t last to the end of the day though. U19s were committed for 3/4s against last years Grand Finalist. Leading into the last quarter they were 4 goals up kicking against the breeze. Red Hill rattled home and overran us by 4points. The boys were terribly disappointed and they hope to make amends this Friday. The 2s terribly undermanned took on another finalist from last year in Red Hill. For 3 quarters the very young team were up to it in their eyeballs. With 4 boys backing up from U19s and 3 blokes gone with injuries the task was too great in the heat and they fell short by 14points. This team is one to watch this season, Paul ‘Noodles’ Norton has a pretty keen bunch. The 1s game was a corker! We won the toss and kicked with the wind, Jared Eames with his first kick with the club, kicked a goal and at half-time we were 10points up. The 3rd quarter was a fantastic quarter of footy where we kicked 5 to 1 to come 30points up and defending against the wind in the last. We were up and about and after the cruel injury to Pep, Sedgy and Bater battled wonderfully in the ruck and Soppy and Speeds were unstoppable. Kane,SOS and co were great down back and Steve Crowe turned back the clock! A amazing storm rolled through in the last and the game was cancelled with us 6 goals up. A great result! Didn’t the locals climb the trees last week to get into Tractor Park to see our clash against The Flower Farmers from Devon. And didn’t the home town heros literally whip up a storm in the 3rd as it rained late goals, six of them to be precise. And then .... well all hell broke loose! Power down! Trees down. Umpires off and the 4pts plus the Cup to the Dales. That was then and this is now. It’s “Bazza Time” as Big Bad Bazza Hall dons the Hoops to take on the mob from up the road. They say its a circus in the Village and today the tents are up and the locals will again pack in to provide the best atmosphere you can get in local footy. Today lets hope we nail the Bombers to the cross and celebrate with chocolate eggs on Sunday. So make sure you’re part of it when the whips are cracking. Congratulations to the Committee at Pearcedale in the recruiting of Barry Hall for todays game, we hope that you get a bumper crowd & commercial success. Have you heard that Marvel Universe are working on a new superhero movie titled “Fantastic Fults & the Super 7”. It’s the story of a young man from the country who takes over a footy club when its leader is away enjoying chili, lemongrass & coriander. Fantastic Fults then oversees the Super 7 victories of the Bombers and he is declared a hero by all at Bomberland. Fantastic Fults is a humble leader and shares the praise with Liam Wishart & Tyson Pyper in the Thirds match who both played great games. Big Kitch was a class act in the Reserves and his support cast included great performances from Jac Mac & Whits. After months of hard work over the summer, the boys finally got to run out as a team for the first match of the home and away season last week and overall it was a really good start to the year. Despite a great effort by our Under 19s, they fell short, but our Reserves and Seniors all had great wins to get their campaigns off to the perfect start. As we said last week, there’s a lot of excitement around the club at the moment, with a number of new faces both on and off the field, so it was great to get a couple of good wins and keep building on that positive feeling – especially against Rosebud who have been really strong across all divisions over the last few years. This week we’re back on home soil at Shark Park as we take on our traditional Easter-weekend rivals, Dromana. While the Tigers had a rough start to the season, losing all three matches to Frankston Bombers last week, they will no doubt be fired up and looking to get their first wins for the season this week. One of the main problems the Sharks had last year was that we lacked consistency in our performances and the boys and coaching staff have been working hard to change that so let’s home that shines through on the weekend. Let’s hope we can get three wins this week and get our season off to a fantastic start. Go Sharks!

Dromana v Sorrento on Easter Saturday could you wish for a better game and our sponsors for the day are Bendigo Community Bank and Hillview Quarries. Our first round efforts from all teams can be put down to experience and we need to get back to basics and rediscover the hard at the football type of play for which we have become known over the last few seasons. It also takes a couple of rounds to sort out who are the real contenders and who are the pretenders. If you haven’t bought a membership this year we encourage you to as you will save on gate entry cost, also you will note that Footy Records are now $2:00, or you could sponsor a player for $220 inc GST which includes Membership and entry in a Raffle for a Ticket to the President’s Luncheon. Due to some unforeseen issues the Greek Night had to be put back until late May, however next Saturday night sees a Pizza and Music night at the rooms. The club is also looking at opening the bar on a Friday night so see our Bar Manager Tim for details. Our players will be wearing black armbands today to recognise the passing of Colin Matthews but also to celebrate whawould have been his 70th birthday on Sunday. Happy Birthday Col. 90 seconds gone in the final quarter, 1 goal down but kicking with the wind against a Ricky Nixon inspired Pearcedale. Normally i’d expect we get the choccies from that position but unfortunately not last week as Mother Nature had other plans - the lightning began, the umpires declared the conditions unfit for football and the rest is history. To be honest i think the umpires were only keen to get off the ground so quick to make sure they didn’t miss out on some of the sweet Nixon/ Kerr merchandise that was available for sale in the clubrooms. We were dirty on the day but the weeks roll on pretty quickly in footy and the focus quickly changed to today and our first game back at home for 2017. Great to see Drewy and Stiffy Harmes back-up from the 19s to play in the senior game as well last week awesome effort and certainly did not look out of place playing up with the big boys. Smacky and Budgie kicking 5 a piece was also very promising. It was also a great week for the 19s and Reserves who both got the season off to winning starts. The 19s had to be helped out for numbers by some Beleura fill-ins so hopefully a winning start to the year will drag a few more numbers to training. The 2’s were very solid with a good spread of goalkickers and no surprises to see Poss amongst them as per usual. The new scoreboard is up and running and we’ll be hoping it’s on our side for all 3 games today. Stick around for a few beers and presentations in Flano’s Bar after the game. Go Meadows!

Last weekend got off to a very sad start with one of our tireless workers and Life Member Geoff Lewis passing away. Geoff had been on every committee involved at Hastings, and had been team manager of the reserves for about20 years, our Club wishes to express our deepest Sympathy to Geoffs wife Maree and their family, R.I.P Geoff, you big booming voice will be sadly missed. 3wins to the football teams sees all 3 teams on top of the ladder, great win by the under 19,s as they beat a Rye side that has been predicted to play a big part in the finals this year, the reserves played a couple of quarters of good footy to record a good win, when these boys start putting 4 quarters together they will be a pleasure to watch. After Club historian Vic Jeremiah unfurled the 2016 Premiership flag, the seniors got of to a slow start, and by half way thru the 2nd term trailed Rye by 32 points, from there the players got their act together and kicked 102 points to Rye’s 2 points, to run out comfortable winners, lot of new players in the team so will take a few weeks to start to jell, but 2 from 2 playing only a couple of good quarters each week is not bad. Welcome to footy on the Hill-Easter Sunday Edition. Our old rivals Crib Pt make the journey up from the Nest to do battle for the Emond-Healy Shield which has been safely in our hands for the last few years. Good wins to the unders and seconds last week , and an extraordinary finish to the main game Unfortunately Sommie had done the damage in the third quarter before the storm struck and the game called off. Crib Point’s 2017 season kicked off with a bang with 6 of the 7 teams getting up !History was made with Cribby’s own legend Michael Binney officially opening the CPFNC netball courts. An emotional moment for many involved. It has been an incredibly long road and they were finally able to play a game at their home ground. A great feeling! On court, the girls could not have asked for a better start to the 2017 season. In the footy , the Under 19’s football side ended up playing a practice match, with Tyabb unable to fill a side and a forfeit. Coach Andrew Wisken and his boys will have to wait one more week for their first official match. In the Reserves, Coach Dale Crossman had his first game at the helm and although it didn’t quite go to plan there were still some promising signs. Crib started strongly but lost their way. Losing Vice-captain Joel Monger early with a knee injury made things tough. Daniel Briggs was a human wrecking ball for throwing himself at every contest. They went down 46 - 57. The seniors put in a strong team performance to the delight of first time coach Brad Arnold. They were hot from the first bounce with Waide Symes coming back from injury after 678 days on the sidelines contributing 8 goals , and Taylor Stratton a stand out in the midfield, contributing 5 goals himself, and new recruit Mitch Chopping with 3 . Easter Weekend Welcome to the crazy round played over 3 days. For some it’s the 4th full moon of the year, for others it’s the 1st full moon of the football season. Either way we know that all the loonies come out to play. If you have ever worked in an industry that deals with the public like our Police, Ambos, Firemen and Women, plus the health care industry you understand what a full moon means. Everywhere you look there are crazy people. I do ask however, who are the craziest of all? The footballers who we are there to watch, the paying public who are the real experts on football (just ask any one of them and they will tell you) or the umpires, of which there are 3 groups. Field, Boundary and Goal. The quick answer is the women and men, girls and boys who umpire football. The next question you must ask is, amongst this group of individuals who are the looniest? Again, the answer is simple. It must be the loony ones that run between the behind posts. I hear the goal umpires groan “not again” but they are wrong. It is the boundary umpires. You must ask yourself what goes through the mind of a boundary umpire during a game. I asked one who just happens to be my son. His first answer was interesting. “I don’t know. Just trying to keep my eye on the ball and anticipate where the ball is going.” He didn’t have a second answer. This says to me that there is not much going on

between the ears however they might also be the smart ones of the group. Think about it. You constantly hear the players and crowd questioning every decision a field umpire makes or more to the point doesn’t make. The advice given to goal umpires on any close decision can border on the insane, however the boundary umpires must only worry about their hair and the way it flows as they sprint past like the flash from behind post to behind post. As a goal umpire who regularly relies on the looniest umpires of all (the boundary umpire) I thank you for your craziness. Keep up the great work. It takes a certain type of person to want to umpire, but those people who take the brave step, often benefit greatly from all umpiring offers. Bendigo Community Bank Nepean Netball Preview – Round 2 2017 Rye v Rosebud For Rye A-Grade it will be the first game for the 2017 season. The Demons will have a challenge on their hand though, facing Rosebud who come off a convincing win against Sorrento last week. This local derby is always a big game, and both sides will be ready to take it on. It’s a hard choice to tip who will win, but with Rosebud already having a victory under their belt, they will get the nod this week. Pearcedale v Frankston Bombers Big game this week, and although we won’t be seeing Barry Hall putting on an Aline dress, this game will have it all. Pearcedale were surprised by a slick Devon Meadows outfit last week and will be looking to make amends. An on the other hand as mention last week, Frankston blew Dromana away with an 18-point victory. The Panthers will have another tough game on their hands with the new and improved Bombshells outfit. Tough one to call, Frankston to keep the surprises coming.

Somerville, on the other hand, had a nice little win over Red Hill and will be looking to capitalise on down Tyabb side. Should be a brilliant game, Somerville will get this week’s tip. Red Hill v Crib Point What a game fist up from Crib Point. The Premiers made sure that they sent a statement to the rest of the competition, that it will be hard to take the Premiers title off them. Red Hill might have a tough day in the office ahead, but not one that they will baulk at. Crib Point is the tip for this game. Devon Meadows - Bye

A-Grade – In our opening round against Sorrento we got rid of the cobwebs early. Jumping on the court with the fire in our belly. We put the pressure on all over the court which we planned to do early on. We had a few changes and it was good to see that we have depth and the changes didn’t make a difference. Great first win. Best – Daisy & Tam. B-Grade – Our game focus was to get a really smooth transition of passing down the court and our hard work at training paid off! We came together to achieve a great win by 10 goals. Our centre court dominated to get the ball down to our shooters smoothly. Sorrento were great competitors so well done to them as well. Best - Indi in GS & Erica in WA. C-Grade – A massive first game, we played a tight first quarter and jelled together like a team should. We played a brilliant all round game and our defence were on point! Attack end were a new combo but played like they have played together for years. Well done to Heather on her first ever game of netball with the highlight being a screamer of an intercept! Convincing win in the end, very proud of you all. Best – Tiahn & Ashlee. Under 17s – It was a tough game against Sorrento, missing a few of our key players to sickness and injury. After a slow start the girls picked up, focusing on what we needed to work on, progressively improving each quarter. Awesome defence by Hollie and Liz, shooting by Jamie and strong drives by Kate through the middle. Great work girls! Best – Hollie & Liz

Hastings Blues

A very hot windy day was not the ideal conditions for netball, as we welcomed Rye for their first round for the season. D Grade We faced a tough opposition with Rye bringing a strong front. The girls battled it out with great patches of on court play. Plenty still to work on but it is exciting to know what we can achieve. Increasing our finesse in the goal circle will make a big impact moving forward. C GRADE We kept the hustle up the entire game, defending strongly. In the second half we kept up our tight defence causing Rye to turn over the ball time and time again remaining competitive as ever! Wind wasn’t in our favour for our shooters and we failed to capitalize, work on some shooting at training this week will be our focus. B Grade A slow start on a hot, sunny winding day saw us on the back foot from the start. We did however regroup coming out strongly in the third quarter, winning it by a goal. A new group still getting to know each other on the court has B grade playing a little inconsistent, as the season continues this will definitely improve. All teams are excited for the this weeks Easter Saturday clash with Devon Meadows.

The Easter bunny came early and delivered some wins! Seven from seven has a very nice ring to it, the only thing sweeter is the gentle sound of clinking half price cruisers in celebration of all netball, and all football teams victories! Our dominating D grade set the scene with an out of position Beth feeding our shooters gold, she has us questioning why we haven’t played her in centre before. And Ash displayed some characteristics a bit unfamiliar to her, she showed patience and poise and shot with class. C grade notched up their first win with a masterclass of netball skills. Combining well across the court but particularly H and KP in goals, H liked shooting goals almost as much as she likes hotdogs. B grade kept the wins rolling. Em showed Mads and Jen that you only need one person to smash out a bomber block, Mads retaliated by attacking the ground and earning some band aids but also a win for her efforts. Meanwhile A grade have what they haven’t in a while: Hope. They have officially won more games than we did last year and were on fire so often during the game we all had to stop, drop and roll. Em and Josie shot from comfortable territory which seemed like anywhere in the goal circle, and Rubes was so quick she made her opponent look as slow as a broken clock. When they gel so well now, who knows what they can achieve. So let’s bring on round two and realise it’s an important tradition to overreact from round one, so lock all teams in for the premiership!

Somerville Eagles

Round 1 saw us take on Red Hill in what were thankfully dry conditions. We came away with mixed results and lots to work on but enjoyed our first hit out of the season! It was the first time the D girls had all played together. Although the result wasn’t the one they were after, there were some good passages of play and they found some exciting new combinations. The C girls also just missed out on the win however they played well, didn’t drop their heads and their combinations worked well. The B girls came away with a great win. Every player on court did what was asked of them and the effort showed in the results. The A girls came back from being down at half time and had a great second half, everyone playing well and shutting down their opponents. Overall a really promising start to the 2017 season! Today we take on Tyabb for the Easter round where we are hoping to come away with 4 from 4! GO EAGLES!

Thanks to our long time sponsor this week ‘BRAD PHILLIPS ELECTRICAL’ Our first game back was a local one against Rosebud. Our U17’s played an amazing game for the first game of the season as a new team. The whole team played extremely well, with an outstanding performance from the defence end with Gemma and Maggie stopping the majority of the oppositions opportunities. Overall we came out with a convincing win over rosebud! The C grade girls started off well against Rosebud but a couple of silly mistakes lead them to get a handy lead early on in the game. As it was also their first game as a new team, they have a lot to work on but the potential for a strong team is definitely there. Brooke was a standout throughout the game in defence getting many rebounds in the circle. Next up was our B grade girls who played an amazing game. It was side by side in the scoring for the first three quarters but unfortunately Rosebud slipped away in the last quarter. Jens defence through out the game was spectacular defending some of the game with out a GD, and Livs crazy scoring was amazing with her also shooting with out a GA for some of the game. The A grade girls gave it their all and never gave up but Rosebud just got away and developed a strong lead early in the game. Our shooters played a great game proving their spot in the A team. The Denniston sisters played outstanding with both hardly missing a shot! Well done girls. Looking forward to a big game against Dromana!

Last week against Crib Point was one of our worst performances in the history of our great club with all 4 teams going down. Across all games, Crib were more polished, fitter & combined better as a team. With so many new players to the club we’re aware it will take time to iron out creases in our game plan & we’re fortunate to have had this shake up early on in the season with plenty of time to improve. D grade worked tirelessly in defence with Megan constantly turning the ball over & sending it back into attack. Despite her large workload Mayra was best on court with her never-say-die attitude. Jayde was impressive in C grade, working hard to bring the ball out of defence & causing turnovers with her relentless pressure across the court. Jaye & Lace combined well but, unfortunately, they weren’t rewarded on the scoreboard. B grade best on was Rhi with her efforts in turning the ball over all across the court & backing up in attack. Unfortunately the girls had only one option to the ball all game which proved too easy for the Crib defenders to intercept. It was a day for defenders with Watto also named beston in A grade due to her ability to continuously turn the ball over & work well with all combinations out in front. More work needs to be done to vary the work in attack to capitalise on the work of the defenders. All coaches are looking for a more consistent, whole team effort, as we continue our challenging start to the season against Somie. NIP! NIP!

Dromana Tigers

U17 are looking forward to their first outing of 2017 after a competitive 2016 season. U17 League Best and Fairest Rivvy Walter is leading the team with several team mates from last year and a good selection of new players, plus more development players in the wings. We are excited about what the year holds for this team, coached by returning A Grade player Elise Hunter. C Grade are keen to rebound from the opening round against Frankston. It was great to see the girls together for the first time against some more experienced players. While the court was hot underfoot for some before the storms came through Baxter, we are looking forward to more traditional netball temperatures in Sorrento this week. B Grade had a respectable start against a traditionally strong B Grade Frankston in round one, although we didn’t get the win. The team are gelling very well with lots of returning players from 2016 and some exciting new additions including U17 Shaye and Mackenzie, and country recruit Sophie Driscoll. With a super mix of experience and young talent, A Grade are proud to be developing home grown talent and a strong club culture. The traditional feistiness and 100% endeavour at all costs is back this year with a few surprises along the way. Hopefully this week we can be closer at the final siren. Go Tigers

Devon Meadows Panthers

It was a clash of the panthers!! We saw the under 17s go down 47 to 17. They faced quality opposition in Pearcedale, we managed to play some great netball and keep up until half way through the second quarter. After this their class was too great for our Panther Cubs. Caitlyn Browne ran the centre with great control & our goalers were accurate when we had opportunity. Hocking Stuart Frankston Player of the Day - Ella Boakes. D grade took off well but in the end we lost 33 to 20. Jess and Kat in our defensive end got quite a few turnovers but unfortunately we were unable to turn them into goals. Best on went to Brooke Murray for her control and ability to always be there for an option for all the girls. A special mention goes the under 17s girls who stepped up and filled a position in our senior team! What a game for c grade coming out a draw at 31 each! The girls showed great versatility on the court with Caitlin brown being a stand out in the mid court. Emily edwards came on in the second half, becoming a big assett to our defensive pressure. Best on went to Maddie Brown. B grade came out firing from the first whistle winning 45 to 27. We worked many combinations all of which worked well. Let’s get another win on the board this weekend. Ezzy mortgages player of the day was Jill everitt. A grade then followed up with another win 48 to 26. Ash and Nat smashed the denfense, taking on any player pearcedale threw at them! The play flowed well and the girls worked great as a team.

Red Hill Hills

A grade continues to develop young local players and we welcome Emilie and Kate to the squad! As usual it was a good hit out against Somerville and we started well. Defense was strong and consistent across the whole game, goalers worked well in lots of combinations and will only get better! Great bench support from Zoe and Katelyn! B grade will be disappointed after the game on Saturday, but with more game time together they will quickly develop into a consistent, competitive team! A group with lots of talent that will only grow in confidence and skill. We welcomed new players Ella and Zoe with K Morg making a comeback! A closer and slower match than the ‘D’s but a great result for the ‘C’ team with another win for Red Hill. Fabulous comeback from Liv Raven in defence who teamed up with Aimee Mickleburough to shut down the Somerville shooters. Abbie King showed her signature athleticism and accurate shooting in goals. Each player put in a big effort under the warm and windy conditions. The ‘D’ team was made up of a mix of new and old players and the combination was formidable. Watching the game you would never pick that the girls had never played together before. They started strongly and never dropped their guard. Every player put in a great effort with excellent intercepts by Mariah Mold, pin point accurate passes by Liv Cook and an exceptional 32 goals scored by Mae Cuming. Netball Notes

Bendigo Community Bank Crib Point Magpies

History was made last weekend. Our own wonderful clubman Michael Binney officially opened the CPFNC new netball courts. An emotional moment for many involved. It has been an incredibly long road and we’ve finally been able to play our first game at our home ground. A great feeling! On court, we could not have asked for a better start to the 2017 season with all of our teams getting their first win. We weren’t sure how our D Graders would go, with their mixture of youth and experience however we were incredibly impressed with their performance, winning by 14. Newcomer Laura Smith had a blinder and received the BOC award. Ayla Gallagher stared in D Grade’s winning performance and was BOC. 29 goals was the difference. It was awesome to see mother and daughter, Rachel and Ayla play together, something we might see more of over the season! B Grade was a little closer, winning by 8 although the team were in control all game and never looked like letting the game slip. The girls worked on the feedback from coach Adrienne and will continue to improve during the season. Tahlia in WD was BOC. The Grand Final rematch ended up being a bit of a blow out. Our girls came away with a 29 goal win. Playing as a team and having worked really hard during the preseason certainly paid off. BOC - Adrienne Harris. Today we play Red Hill, best of luck to our boys too. We expect to have a tough encounter across all grades and on the field. Enjoy some chocolate this weekend!

Rye Demons We travelled to Hastings for Round 1 on a warm and windy day. Our D grade team combined to have a great win over the Hastings. The girls showed lots of versatility, with lots of changes to give everyone a run. Defence was tight all game, limiting Hastings to only 7 goals for the game. Final score 29-7. Well done girls! BOC – Ruby Jones C grade also had a great win. Defence was another strong point with Sarah, Hayley and Eliza working well together and having some great intercepts. There were some great passages of play down the court with Melissa feeding well into the goalers. Ingrid keeping us entertained with her great goaling skills. Final Score 34-11. BOC- Ingrid Trivett B Grade had the closest game for the day, winning 3 out of 4 quarters. Chloe was strong in the centre court, moving fast and creating space when needed. Our goalers worked hard all game against a determined Hasting defenders. Sienna, Imogen and Bianca worked hard in Defence, with the Hastings goalers showing a lot of strength. After a third quarter loss, Rye came back to win the 4th and the game by 10 goals. Final Score 33-23. BOC- Sienna Wills With three great wins, there is still plenty of room for improvement. Looking forward to some great netball against Rosebud for the Good Friday clash. Don’t forget our Player Auction in the rooms after the games. Go Dees!

Pearcedale Panthers

The Pink Panthers season sure has kicked off with a ROAR! With plenty of new faces and talent around the club, we were set to give it our all against Devon Meadows in the inaugural Panther Cup. Our 17’s kicked the day off and hit the ground running taking our opposition by surprise and before you knew it, had opened a 20 goal lead. The girls didn’t stop there though, leaving Devon scoreless in the 3rd quarter they finished the game an impressive 30 goals up- a great start from this young team. D Grade were next up and determined to show that experience over youth would get them the win today and it sure did! Led by the defensive duo of Brownwyn & Vikki they took the 4 points by 13 goals. C grade was set for a tough match as always, though particularly so this week from missing the majority of their defensive end. However these girls really took it to Devon and fought hard for every second, scoring a goal on the siren to even it up and come away with a draw. B Grade, full of fresh faces, showed promising signs of brilliance at times and determination not to let Devon just walk away with the W. Maybe not quite converting their effort on court into goals on the scoreboard the gals still put up a challenge they can be proud of. Although a little slow out of the gate, A Grade finished their game strong especially through their midcourt. Not a team to be taken lightly this season, they look to challenge most teams- and Frankston are next! Get down for a Thursday night BLOCKBUSTER!
