Bendigo Community Bank MPNFL Update Round 6 2017 Welcome back to the 2017 home and away season for both Peninsula FNL and Nepean FNL. We hope that everyone enjoyed the week off (if you had one) and look forward to getting into the guts of the season. Last week was the AFL Victoria Worksafe Community Championships, and the MPNFL headed off to the Melbourne Cricket Ground to take on the Geelong FNL and end their five-year reign of supremacy. Unfortunately, on the day the boys from the other side of the bay proved to be too good and ran away with a 22-point win. It was a great effort from MPNFL boys and they never gave up until the final siren.

Indigenous Round will be celebrated next week throughout the competitions. It is a great week for everyone to look upon and reflect and marvel to what the Indigenous community has bought to the sport at both higher grade and local football and netball. A reminder that we have also officially moved to Frankston Park, in the old gaming venue. Our ranking has now dropped back to number 3 and we will face the Northern Football League for the 2nd time in two years, after their triumphant 125-point win over the WRFL. Bendigo Community Bank 2018 COMMUNITY CHAMPIONSHIPS RANKINGS RELEASED AFL Victoria has released the official rankings for the 2018 WorkSafe AFL Victoria Community Championships following a successful 2017 competition on May 13. Thirty-two community football leagues have been assigned new nominal rankings following their participation in its 2017 Championships, which saw the best senior players from across Victoria go head-to-head in a one off interleague match. Geelong Football Netball League remains the number one ranked community football league in Victoria after defeating Mornington Peninsula Nepean Football League by 22-points at the MCG. The Eastern Football League remains the best metropolitan league in Melbourne following its two point win over the Essendon District Football League in a thriller at Bayswater. Eastern FL moves up to second place in the 2018 rankings and will face Geelong FNL for the top-ranking, while MPNFL will slip to third and face the Northern FL (fourth) after its win over Western Regional FL. Rounding out the top ten ranking positions are Essendon DFL (fifth), Ovens & Murray FL (sixth), Western Region FL (seventh), Ballarat FNL (eighth), Goulburn Valley FNL (ninth) and Hampden FNL (tenth). The 2018 rankings list does not provide a likely schedule of matches for 2018, with leagues given the opportunity to opt-in or withdraw from the competition each season. Final entries for participation in the 2018 season are not requested by AFL Victoria until November, which allows leagues sufficient time to decide whether they wish to participate in the competition the following year. Football Preview A memorable experience By Toe Punt Congratulations to the six Nepean players who represented the MPNFL Sharks at the MCG last weekend. Without question, for all of us who were lucky enough to be involved, it was a memorable experience. Like the players who took the field, coaches who joined the likes of McHale, Barassi, Hafey, Matthews & Malthouse to coach at the ground, as well as officials and staff, we too were blessed to be involved, commentating the game live with RPPFM. Congratulations to Michael Voss and Lachy Kelly for their outstanding work, Steve for his wonderful production and station manager Brendan Telfer for his support. I also want to take the opportunity to congratulate coach John Hynes and his line coaches Gavin Artico, Pat Poore, Paul Hopgood and John Gerogiou for their outstanding work over a long campaign. They could not have done any more to select and prepare the Sharks for the contest. To the club coaches and clubs as a whole, take a bow – your support of the campaign was unprecedented. Congratulations too to the officials, trainers etc who were involved. I know I speak on behalf of everyone who was involved at the MCG last Saturday that it was a wonderful afternoon, albeit we didn’t get the result we were all looking for.

THIS WEEK Whilst the MPNFL Sharks went about their business, many other players and clubs as a whole took advantage of the week off, refreshing themselves for the next run of games. There is no bigger game in MPNFL Nepean Division this weekend than the RPP Match of the Round, Red Hill v Hastings, live on 98.7FM. The Hillmen are playing some pretty good footy at the moment and it seems Hastings has found its groove after an unconvincing start. Both teams are coming off big victories against Tyabb and Crib Point respectively. Both teams did what they had to do, which wasn’t anything special given the opposition. The true form line I suppose could come from their matches against Frankston Bombers. Hastings didn’t get near the Bombers at Greg Beck Oval and Red Hill went close to knocking them off at the Hill. Like Red Hill did against Rosebud, they’ll be looking to hit-up the short option, overlap and open-up the Blues – challenge them for pace! The Blues looked slow against Frankston and there’s little doubt that the Hillmen have the Bombers covered for pace. With Chris Irving, Sean Marchetti, Jake Mold and Benny Poole in the midfield, Red Hill can also match the Blues on the inside.

Football Preview The challenges keep coming for the Red Hill defence too, but they are ranked number two in the competition, only behind Sorrento. Preventing teams kicking a score has never been an issue for the Hillmen. The Blues are ranked two in offence but seventh in defence. Luke Hewitt, Luke Clark and now David Hirst make-up a pretty potent forward half for the Blues. It will be interesting to see if the Hillmen roll the dice with Shane Bloomfield, a former star in the Geelong FL, after one game in the magoos – I’d be unleashing him asap, albeit it’s not coach Tony Blackford’s style. However, if the Hillmen knock over the Blues today, it would set them up for the remainder of the year. It’s worth the gamble! The stats alone highlight that if the Hillmen can maintain their resolve in defence and get the ball often enough in the forward half, they should win. It’s hard to go past the reigning premiers though, who have found their mojo and are playing confident footy. SOMERVILLE simply must bounce back this afternoon against RYE.

Rye had a great victory against Pearcedale but lowered its colours against Bombers (to be fair, they are not and will not be the only team to do so). Finding a level of consistency is the key though for the young Demons. What is the benchmark and how do they reach it each week? Collectively, the Demons have to determine was is acceptable and what is not.

The Eagles were right in it against Devon Meadows but inaccuracy cost them. Somerville’s form has been a bit up and down but it is still equal fourth on points and a win today will keep them in the hunt.

Football Preview DROMANA and PEARCEDALE will be a fascinating game. The Tigers have been awful. The Panthers have been inconsistent. Dromana is usually a very different side at home but we haven’t seen that this season. Pearcedale will have pencilled this game in as a win and it won’t let a repeat of the Rye performance come back to haunt them. Dromana needs to find its point of difference and use that as an advantage. It’s a young, small, quick team – use that to your advantage! DEVON MEADOWS has an opportunity today against ROSEBUD to prove whether it is a genuine chance to play finals, or, is simply one of the most dangerous teams outside the top echelon that will cause headaches but not get there. The Meadows have taken all before them and are in form with three wins on the trot. It’s only real genuine loss was against Hastings and they led that at three quarter time! It’s hard not to have admiration for the Meadows given their circumstances. Rosebud at Rosebud is a different proposition though. Coach Adrian McBean told the RPP Footy Show a couple of weeks ago that his charges were still learning the new game style and that he expected them to improve as the season rolled-on. The Buds losses have come against Sorrento and Red Hill, surprisingly, both at home. I doubt whether they’ll let this one slip today on their own deck. The last couple of games will, unfortunately, be one-sided with FRANKSTON hosting CRIB POINT and SORRENTO playing TYABB. Both the Bombers and the Sharks will be looking at threefigure victories.

We welcome Pearcedale to the Tigers Den for this rounds games which should be close encounters given our relative ladder positions in all grades. We also celebrate and congratulate Terry Wheeler our senior captain on his 100th senior game in what has been an outstanding career with our club. All three of our teams registered losses last round against Rosebud with injuries taking a toll on player availability but hopefully today should see us regain some of our missing players. Last round saw a well attended Mother’s Day Luncheon which the ladies seemed to enjoy. So a big thanks to Tara and Debbie for their organisation of this event and to the U19 players who filled in for some of our female volunteers so they could attend the function. The clubs next social function is the Players Revue on the 20th of May at the Clubrooms followed by a choice of events on the 27th May. A Greek Night at the Clubrooms or a Sportsmen’s night at The New Atrium. A new feature this year are our gourmet hamburgers, sausages and steak sandwiches so make sure you try them out We are still looking for some volunteers for various areas around the club including on the Board. So if you feel you have something to contribute speak to our Secretary Graham Stelling. Lastly make sure your putting your money away for a Major Raffle ticket which will be on sale shortly. Well just like Mick Fanning at J Bay, the Dales were attacked by the Sharks a fortnight ago. Unlike Mick however we didn’t attack the Sharks that were attacking us with the vigor of Mick and we didn’t have enough Julian Wilsons (fellow Aussie surfer who paddled over to help Mick) to dig in and help out. But the beauty of footy is today is another day and we get to crack in again as we head down the Peninsula and ride the Arthurs Seat Eagle from the top of the Mountain down to the Reservoir of Peninsula. Yes Dromana, the home of the Grasshoppers. Oh yes they’re known as the Tigers now but they’ll always be Grasshoppers to me. Hopefully the week off has allowed some of the soldiers to return to the frontline battlefield of Stewys Army, in turn helping Jimmy & Jarmin with the Magoos. We are not here to stroll through the gardens at Heronswood and enjoy tea & cake. We simply look instead to take away the 4 points. Early season form suggests we can so lets get cracking! The Under 19’s have won back to back games for the first time this season and it looks like the boys are really starting to gel. The boys took control of the game and forced Hastings to play on their terms finishing off the morning with a solid 51 point win. Crib Point’s best players were Khai Jones, Will Larkin, Jack Field, Ryan Regan, Joesph ‘Joey Jo Jo’ Smith, and Stephen Beach. The Reserves started slowly and were down at the first break, but bounced back and were right in the contest at half time. The 2’s had their chances but a fast finishing Hastings saw them pile on 3 goals in the last 5 minutes to win the game by 18 points. After a big preseason Gordon Frankel was a live wire in the forward line, Neil ‘Big Bad Bustling Boogsy Clunks’ Clarke and Braddley Davidson played their first game for the year and looked in good form early, while Co-Captain Daniel White worked tirelessly all day. After a good tussle in the first quarter Hastings seniors took control of the match. Our boys battled all day and never gave up, but couldn’t match the class of Hastings as our cross town rivals finished the day with an 81 point victory. Riley Bowman in his second game was best afield. Brendan ‘Defendor’ Phillips and Jayden Espenschied were good down back. David ‘Buzz’ Cook is in good form and continues push his case as the best Cook to pull on the footy boots for Crib Point in the last decade. After a much needed bye the lads will be eager to bounce back against the Bombers.

Welcome to our Ladies Day Luncheon in support of the fight against Breast Cancer. Given that over half of our playing membership is now women it is highly appropriate that we support such a day- we hope it is an enjoyable and profitable one for the cause. We also welcome the Hastings FNC to the hill to continue a rivalry which extends back to our beginnings in 1929 when the “Chip” was a new venue for football. The highlight of the last round was Mockies goal on the siren to give the Magoos victory over a side who had won four games previously. Well done to Andy and the U19s who sportingly created a game earlier in the day by lending players. The golf day was a success thanks largely to the work of Ron Kane, Peter Kelly and the band of helpers. We were blest with a super weather day and a Flinders GC course which was in great condition. It was nice to have a Volvo Brighton vehicle on display. They give wonderful support to our Academy. All players (footy and netball) are invited to bring their friends to the BALL in the Clubrooms after next week’s games against Pearcedale. With no football last week due to interleague footy, The HFNC held its annual John Coleman/ Hall of fame lunch, now in its 3rd season, the lunch was a fantastic success, so well done to Phil Stone and the other organisers , congratulations to Peter A Lewis, Peter J Lewis, Damon Lawrence , Bob Mayne, Fred Floyd, Shane Sparey, Dean Morrison, Alan Knox, Simon Powell and Trevor Rollinson, who were all inducted into the HFNC hall of fame, and Peter Hibbert who was elevated to Club Legend status. Our previous game before the break was against Crib, which saw us record good wins in the Seniors and Reserves, while the under 19,s came up against a highly skilled magpie team. Congratulations to Joel Standfield who played his 100th senior game and also to Terry Green who played his 50th senior game. Our womens football team also had their first game on Saturday against Officer and recorded a great first up win, well done girls, and as you are reading this hopefully they had their 2nd win against Crib/Cerebrus last night. Today we welcome Devon Meadows to Olympic Park. With both teams sitting on 3 and 2 it promises to be a great contest! We enter that phase of the season which starts to sort out those teams likely to make the top 3 or 4 and banking a win today will be one step towards that goal. There were some very positive signs against the Tigers – our experienced players continue to be highly productive and our young guns continue to grow – giving reason to be confident that we will continue to improve as a team as the season progresses. There were many quality contributors in the main game at Dromana but Seb, Jack, BT along with Daniel and Josh were consistent clear winners for contested ball all day. After a sluggish first half the Development Team were kept in the game by Phil, Bryce, Tanner, Mewy, Flynn and Lucky and then provided the inspiration for a strong second half to finish with the 4 points and 3rd spot. The U19s were finally rewarded for their persistent hard work, knocking off a team well up on the ladder from them. Well done Reid, Joel, Nick, Matthew, Aaron and Matty S. Nice to be back at the local footy this week, Rosebud is the destination and we are hoping to head back down Peninsula Link with some more points in our pocket. Great day out 2 weeks ago with an awesome, gritty win by our senior side. Youngy sealed the deal with a wobbly mongrel, the likes of which we’ve seen many times launched from half back but not many which have found their way through the big sticks.. A great day for club. The never-say-die attitude of our 22 who take the field every week makes us very proud regardless of the result, but a bit of belief goes a long way and our story hasn’t been written yet. It’s only taken 5 weeks in the red, white and black, but Budgie has already become a cult hero at our club. We love anyone who wears the colours with pride and shows passion for the club. Budgie certainly does that and we are rapt to have him on board. Big Boats is another one who is coming on in leaps and bounds and his pre-game music in the rooms may have a lot to do with our win-loss ratio this year. The heavy metal isn’t everyones taste but it seems to be doing the job so if it aint broke, dont fix it.. Good luck to all 3 sides today against a really solid club in Rosebud. Let them keep doubting us, but a champion team will beat a team of champions every time. Dont forget 3rd June - DMFNC 40th Birthday Party! We are back at the nest this week against Rye, after having last week off with the bye. The bye came at a very good time for us with 12 senior players unavailable due to injury. It is a must win game again for all grades, especially for our 1s who were extremely disappointing in our last outing against Devon Meadows. Our kicking for goal was very poor and must improve if we are to challenge. We had more shots on goal than our opposition, but with 17 points and only 6 goals we are hardly going to get the 4 points. The reserves had a stirring win and finally got on the winners list. Down on numbers and 2-3 boys playing up from the U19s and another couple playing their first games for the club it was very pleasing to get the 4points. Hopefully with players returning results will continue to be the right side of the ledger. The U19s continued on their way with a 97 point win against a depleted Devon. There are bigger challenges ahead in coming weeks for this group pf players, but other than a round 1 slip-up against Red Hill, the U19s have won the last 5 in a row to set their season up nicely. Last weekend was the Business Lunch and special mention must go out to Matt and Ben Page who organized this for first time, taking over from life member Dave Livingstone. The day was a great success with over 90 people in attendance and the guest speaker Ricky Nixon, spoke openly and honestly and extremely impressive to listen to. Back to reality with a thud. After our positive week against Pearcedale with 3 wins from 3 games, maybe a few players got ahead of themselves and forgot about hard work, intensity and a team first attitude is what’s needed. 3 losses to Frankston at Rye, was not part of the script. On a massive positive note, a big congratulations to Olivia Stephens, who last Saturday became the 2nd Netball player, behind Lucy Millar to play 100 club games. Well done Olivia, and we know there are many many great games to come. Back to the footy, and not a lot of positives, but thank god we had Adam Kirkwood, Harry Whity and Leigh Morse last week. Massive games by you three, and I hope you get a lot more support today. We understand we are a young side at the start of a journey, but more effort and intensity, is whats required, week in week out. The reserves were in the game at ¾ time and only 17 points down, but a poor last quarter by us and a great quarter by Frankston really made the margin blow out. Mitch Dunn continues to impress, with Rima, Daniel Cimino, Chaigen Watson and the skipper Doogie Howie. After some real positive signs over the last 4 weeks with the under 19, we just didn’t turn up with the right attitude last week and it really showed on the ground, with Frankston having a very easy win. Boys every week you must bring you’re A game, and its starts again today. Nick Rowson back from the seniors was BOG, Barnsey, Booga, and Gossy all tried hard. Go Demons.

Club Notes

It was a typical day out at Pearcedale last week - cold and windy. However, it was another great day for the Sharks with all three teams winning and winning well! The Under 19’s started the day off in great fashion, defeating Pearcedale by 65 points. The Reserves continued their fine form with another convincing win in which they kicked 18 goals to Pearcedale’s 1. It’s fantastic to see the Reserves going so strong and several players “knocking on the door” for Senior selection. The Seniors finished the day off with another great win. Leigh Poholke continued to do what he does best with another 7 goals, and Leigh Treeby was unstoppable with another best on ground performance. The Seniors ended up defeating Pearcedale by 116 Points. Congratulations to Luke Tapscott , Nick Corp, and James Hallahan on being selected in the MPNFL interleague team. The team played against the Geelong Football League’s interleague side on Saturday at the MCG. Unfortunately the team didn’t win, but all our boys made an impact and can certainly hold their heads high. A fantastic effort, and great representation by the Sharks! This week the Sharks are back at Shark Park, playing Tyabb, and they will be with their star recruit, Chris Dawes, after his striking charge was dropped during the week. That’s great news for the Sharks who are chomping at the bit to get out there again after the bye last week. Let’s hope the boys can continue on their winning way with another three wins. Go Sharks!

After four wins on the trot the reserves squad were in for a tough contest against last seasons runners up. Conditions were wet and windy which Red Hill handled better in the first half. They held a two goal lead at the long break and were then kicking with a strong breeze in the third term. However a desperate Tyabb team emerged in the second half and a fantastic effort saw us out score them in the third quarter to leave us in striking distance in the last quarter. After two early goals that put us in front it looked like we would hold on as the ball went back and forth in the last minutes. However a mark and shot at goal on the siren by Red Hill was adjudged a goal after much discussion and the heartache of footy hit home for the boys. A great fight back that went unrewarded. Today we travel down to Sorrento for one massive challenge, time for our senior list to fight hard. NIP! NIP!

We Have Skills…Allegedly… Skills – something a lot of people claim to have but are clearly mistaken. Different between normal people and umpires – there is at least a remote possibility that a normal person has a skill. Umpires have absolutely no chance. Yes, please note that we are not including umpires in the realm of normal people. Well at least that’s what we all thought. But delve a little deeper and you’ll realise that field umpires at least have one skill. Just one, but at least it’s one. Ask an umpire to bounce next time you decide to be charitable and chin wag with one. Even if it going 15 metres to their left and only one foot off the ground it still classifies as a bounce and therefore…the umpire has a skill. The Bounce was introduced to league football all the way back in 1887. Initially just to start each quarter it only took 4 short years for field umpires to be smacking the ball into the turf at every opportunity. And with a much poorer quality of grounds at the time they’d make specialists in today’s game. An absolute bucket load of things then happened in the following 122 years; Coca-Cola produced its first bottle, the first modern Olympic Games in Athens, the Commonwealth of Australia was created (long overdue), Mr Booth invented the vacuum cleaner resulting in more reports of missing marbles than ever before, Crayola introduced crayons (at the cost of white walls all the world over), Hitler suffered little man syndrome, a couple of guys took a quick holiday to the moon, the Wiggles succeeded in their attempt for World rule and a few other things occurred that are too deep for article. But all the while field umpires continued to totter over to a pack, kindly request access to the football and slam the footy into the deck hoping for just enough height to clear the hands of the 145cm ruckman who were enjoying a quiet chinwag while the poor umpire was looking down.

122 years is a damn long time for the system to stay the same (unfortunately football reverted back to its original setup in 2013 and umpires only had 4 opportunities a game to show off their real skill). These days a rule struggles to last 12 months before someone finds an issue. Of course there’s been some changes in technique. Think back to the 1920s and 30s when the silly bugger would swing the ball single-handedly into the turf reminiscent of a Shaun Tait fire bolt. Later on they even squatted and punched the ball into the ground. Naturally it didn’t work at all. Must’ve been wearing iron fists too. One day the bounce may be no more. And then we’ll evoke memories of the days when an umpire would break their own nose or send our oddly shaped ball into oblivion hoping not to send it through the goals and bounce the winning score. But most of all, we’ll remember the times when there was a lighter side to umpiring and the thing that allowed us our genuine 10 seconds of fame. Bendigo Community Bank Nepean Netball Preview – Round 6 2017 Dromana v Pearcedale The girls from Pearcedale had their first win for season 2017 two weekends ago, by 26 points over Sorrento. That win will certainly build their confidence going into this weekends game. Last week’s break hopefully won’t disrupt their momentum, but Dromana will be hoping that is the case. The tigers haven’t been able to string wins together so far this season, and would love nothing more than win number two. Should be a hard-fought contest, with Pearcedale just edging ahead for this game. Frankston v Crib Point Welcome back Frankston to the winners list. And looking to be one of the threats to Crib Point’s title defence. This game will be a great measuring stick for the Bombshells as they look to continue their improvement. Crib Point have now had two weeks off, so Frankston will be hoping it throws them off their stellar start to 2017. Huge game, and hopefully that all spectators get brilliant game of netball to watch. Crib Point to get the tip.

Somerville v Rye Somerville are certainly sitting pretty, perched on top of the ladder, undefeated. We have to wait until round 10 before the match against Crib Point, but that won’t bother the Eagles as they continue on their merry way. Rye have put in some solid performances so far in 2017 and show they are back on the rise. Whilst the Demons will be very competitive, Somerville should take the four points in this game. Sorrento v Tyabb Last game of the round, Sorrento will look to take on Tyabb side that seems to have lost some of its power this year. Tyabb will win this game, but we can only hope that the Sorra’s continue to improve and learn from one of the leagues better sides over the last few years. Sorrento have a strong junior base and in a few years will see the benefits move through the club.

This week we knew we would have 4 tough and physical games against Devon. Unfortunately the D girls couldn’t maintain their lead and they lost 19-32. Regardless of the score, the girls are improving out of sight with each new week and game. There were some great passages of play and pressure over the ball. The C girls also had a loss but it was fantastic to see everyone going for the ball more and committing to their drives. The new combination in defense was also impressive. The B girls went into the match expecting a tough game and that is what they got. The girls played tough, strong netball from the first whistle and were able to come away with another win. The A girls copped the worst of the weather and played most of the match in puddles. The flow of their play was steady and the ball moved down the court well. It was a solid team effort. GO EAGLES!!!

Crib Point Magpies

It was a successful day at Crib Point for the netballers as we welcomed our rivals; Hastings to the courts. D grade started off our day having a solid win of 18 over Hastings. After an unfortunate injury to Tomi during the 3rd quarter, Kylie stepped up into the role of shooter which proved no hard task. She took the role head on and kept the momentum of the team going awarding herself BOC. The attackers defensive pressure was very strong creating turnovers and the girls chased up every loose ball showing how hungry they were for the win. C grade had a very big win of 41 goals over Hastings. From end to end the ball movement was very good and to summarise, they dominated. The goalers versatility was put into play and no matter the combination; it worked. BOC went to Ange for her stellar performance in defence. A lot of pressure on the B grade game between a young Crib Point team and newly improved Hastings. With Hastings having height up both ends it was going to be tough and Crib were down at the quarter time break setting the challenge. Defenders were superb creating turnovers and getting tips to the ball. The goalers were accurate and at half time we were only down by 2 and spirits were high. The second half was ours and we won by 9. A great comeback and hustle by a true B grade side. BOC went to Holly for her awesome amount of pressure put on creating turnovers. This week we head to Frankston in what will be a tough match in all grades! Go Crib!

Sorrento Sharks Thanks to Fletchers Real Estate for your ongoing support to the netball girls. The u17s had a tough week against Pearcedale recording our first loss for the season. The girls did their best to try and keep up a strong competition but fell to a stronger, smarter side. Grace played a great game all day in the mid court getting her hands on every loose ball she could. C grade also had a tough game this week, our girls in defence did an amazing job and the mid court are starting to get into a good rhythm and of course the girls in the goals never gave up. B grade played a very strong game against a strong team this week. Thanks to all the girls that helped out on the day to get such a great score even though we lost it was a great team effort. Kirra played amazing in WD helping getting the center pass down to the goal shooters. It was a wet and windy day our defenders Meg and Jen trying to stop pearcedale from scoring away through the match. The A grade girls played a very very wet game against Pearcedale, with the rain starting before the game and not finishing until afterwards. The girls were soaked a the end of the game and shoes were heavy. Despite the horrible weather the girls never gave up and played a very competitive game. We welcome Charlie into our team and look forward to the week off, so we can ensure out dresses are dry! GO SHARKS.

What a day at Pantherland we had a few weeks ago! Girls looked buzzed and confident after some good close games against Rye the week before and all 4 teams had their foot on the accelerator from start to finish. 17s were first of the mark and showcased some talent and skills worthy of girls with many more years of netty under their belts. They were clean, crisp and precise all over the court and notched up a 42 goal win over Sorrento. C Grade then came out and started where 17s left off with good talking, backing up and support all over the court. Special mention to Molly who had hands to everything all game and captain Em-Kate who finished the day with 40 goals. As B Grade took the court & the morning sunshine disappeared we saw our first hard fought game for the day. Rain made the ball & court slippery but the girls pushed on and lead with their skills in the mid court. Well done to Caity & Hayley who both played ripper games to lead B Grade to their first win of the season. A Grade again took to the court in the rain and were determined not to ruin Pearcedale’s perfect day. There were stars all over the court but special mention to you Maddi who seemed like she couldn’t miss and some excellent defence by Tara and Frank. Great job today girls, lets keep the progress and improvement going! After a bye week last week I’m sure the girls are refreshed and ready to take it to Dromana... After a tough week and a lot of team changes the D grade girls still came out on top with another impressive win. The defensive pressure was strong causing sommy alot of held balls! The girls came together and everything that we have worked on a training was put into play. BOC Chelsie Edwards. C grade were asked to play four consistent quarters against sommy, and that they did! Kara and Nel shot well, Susie drove the ball out of defence and the mids lost their girls when gave and drove hard for that next ball! Overall the ball flowed up and down the court nicely. BOC Kara henry. B grade - We always knew I’d be tough against last years premiers. It was made tougher with all 3 of our goalers unavailable. A huge thanks to Jilly E who put her hand up to have a go in the ring, a tough gig and you did is proud. Our aim for the week was to enjoy the game & worry about what we do. I’m proud of our efforts. There was some really great passages of play. BOC Tash - so strong onto that ring. A special mention to my under 17s who have been working hard at training despite not having a 17s game for 6 rounds & to those who having been stepping up into the seniors week after week - keep up the awesome work Panther Cubs! After a slow start A Grade stepped up in the 2nd quarter. The hard work at training is starting to pay off. We are a young team and are growing with each outing. While we didn’t win we didn’t give up either. Keep developing ladies it’s going to happen. Boc Nat fallon A-Grade – Our game against Dromana was a great team win! Our hard work and discipline is paying off. Our attacking drive has improved dramatically and it showed. A great-well deserved win. Awards – #1 Courtney #2 Lauren. B-Grade – Our girls were really hungry for the win and it paid off. A few of our girls played through injury & illness but never gave up. Our teamwork & positivity should really be commended. We fought so hard the whole game & never gave up. We were 5 down in the last but came out with the attitude to win. 25 secs to go and Ash F scored the goal to bring us to draw! 10 secs left & Dromana’s centre pass. The noise was as loud as I’ve ever heard, Dromana threw a long ball & Bec H took the intercept on the siren to keep us at a draw! What a great game played by both teams. Awards – #1 Bec #2 Kelsie. Under 17s – The girls went into the game fired up & keen to give it their all. They stood up to Dromana, put on the pressure & played their own game. Despite being down at each quarter it didn’t show on the court with the girls giving their all with endless encouragement and they pulled back a 12pt deficit at ¾ time to go down by 6pts. They all worked extremely hard on their angled drives, front cuts & accurate passes. Great work girls. Awards - #1 Jamie #2 Kellie. Go Buds!

Last round we came up against the Hill(wo)men with a mixed bag of results. Red Hill started strongly in the lower grades but as the torrential rain came down over the pond for A and B grade, the Yabbies were in their element and came out victors. Best on in D grade went to Claire & Chloe. They worked so well under the conditions that made it pretty hard to score & worked the ring beautifully, taking the time to give themselves the best shooting opportunities. Darcey continued her good form in C grade by providing options through the midcourt all day. Hannah shot well considering the wind & adjusted very well to changing combinations in the circle. Brooke applied the work done at training to have her best game of the year in B grade. She persisted with her shooting in very difficult conditions & always ensured she was in the best rebounding position. Kayla turned the ball over for us numerous times in A grade even despite the wet conditions. In C, she provided drive and consistent effort down the court. Today we take the long trip down to Sorrento to take on the young Sharks. FUNCTIONS - MID SEASON BALL June 17th! Tickets now available. NIP! NIP!

Wrap up for a wet & windy round 5 at the pond!! D grade was going to be tough with the weather conditions not on our side. It was a tough start to the game and took some time to get used to the strong winds. Grace stepping up from u/17s and having a really strong game in goals. Mariah and Evie had a great game in the defence bringing the ball down the court and into attack. Overall a great game by the girls and a great win! The wind seemed to pick up for C grade and we knew it was going to be another tough game. I made sure to reinforce to the girls that we had to play a short game because the wind would pick up any lob passes. It was tough for goalers but Rhiannon and Annie never gave up. Katelyn was strong in defence and brought the ball out well. Coming into the final qrt it was even, the girls capitalised on every opportunity and came away with an awesome win! B grade had a tough game against Tyabb missing the start and having to chase for the rest of the game! Sometimes things just don’t go your way and this week everything seemed against us! A weeks rest to regroup is perfect timing to kick start the rest of the season. Stay strong girls you are a talented team, just managing a lot of changes. A grade struggled right from selections with only 2 players available, but our club spirit was strong and across the day many players stepped up played more than a game. We welcomed Karina to the hill and look forward to seeing her enjoy her return to netball.

Frankston Bombshells

Come to Rye they said. Never dry Rye. Lucky we came away with 2 dry wins, 1 damp win and 1 super soggy win. D grade kept on their merry little way just chocking up win number five with welcomed return to goals for Captain Kels. Tina More-Injuries-Than-Games Ramadge surprised everyone when she turned right on that dodgy calf and saved the Malaysian Ambassador – oh wait… she may have caught a netball instead of a ninja star, but still impressive nonetheless. Almighty C grade amassed another massive win. 60 goals in 48 minutes of netty: Now math skills aren’t what they teach you at bomberland but I’d say that’s over a goal a minute! KP wowed us with her versatility both on the court and off, when she finally remembered to pick up her netball shoes! Intimidating B grade was warned to settle the chatter, and with H starting to fatigue with 6 quarters into the day, that may have been a chance. However Tibetan monks we are not and soon the talk was back and with it a hard fought win. Awesome work Chloe Stubbs for jumping on court and not missing a beat when bloody Jen couldn’t keep her blood in her body. The heavens opened up for A grade and the rain kept on pouring. However the court opened up like the red sea for Josie-Moises-Janssen as she continued to split her defenders and score freely. Rubes‘s pressue made our circle defenders life that little bit easier and gave A grade our first ever win against Rye. Super impressive season girls! Bring on Cribby!

Rye Demons Two weeks ago we played at home against a very strong Frankston unit. The D grade game was a tough game with Frankston winning by 13 goals. The young girls fought hard, but couldn’t overcome the strong and experienced Frankston team. BOC was Shannon. C grade was a very tough one for our girls, losing the game by 38 goals. We will reset and work hard at training and look forward to an improved effort against Somerville. BOC was Melinda. The B grade was a lot more competitive, with the girls fighting hard. Unfortunately, a great quarter by Frankston in the last meant we went down by 9. BOC Tamara. We just couldn’t get it together no matter what we tried for the A grade game. We have a lot to work on, and with all the girls working together we will get the balance right. This week we tackle Somerville at Somerville. This will be a huge challenge, but with determination and willingness, we will be up for it! Thanks to Rach, Sarah, Doogie and all the Social Committee for organising the Frat Night.

Hastings Blues

Local derby versus Crib Point started out a beautiful sunny day. D grade started the game off very slow on the score board, but put great pressure on the opposition stopping them from scoring too many goals early on. This weeks efforts showed a team who trained well together during the week and brought it to game day and played well together. C grade got off to a very slow start, coming up against a strong and more experienced Crib Point. Allowing them to get a big lead at quarter time. To the girls credit they came back much stronger in second quarter with Grace Williams rebounding and defending strongly. As the match went on the girls began to tire and Crib Point took advantage of this winning by a considerable margin, the girls certainly have some work to do but have assured each other they up for the challenge and are prepared to work hard at training. B grade girls got off to a fantastic start with Emma Smith dominating in the goal shooter position, going into the break with an 8 goal lead. Crib Point came at us strongly in the second quarter getting on top and winning the quarter. Unfortunately we lost Nicole Marasco early in that quarter due to a knee injuring which really affected

It was a mixed day on Saturday walking away with a win, a draw and two losses U/17’s – An impressive win for our U/17s playing only their second game of the season. Against strong competition, the team took a 7 goal win, with our best being the defensive combination of Rivvy Walter and Eliza Pittard. C Grade – A nail-biting finish to a very close game. Our girls went into the fourth quarter with a 5 goal lead, however Rosebud came at us hard in the last quarter scoring a goal in the dying seconds to draw the game. Awards went to Elise Keane in goals and Ellie Williamson in the mid court. B Grade – Unfortunately a very slow start saw us 17 goals down at the half time break. Rosebud came at us with an intensity that took us a while to adjust to. Credit to the girls, they were able to pull themselves together to win the second half. Overall, it was a 12 goal loss with best being Sahra Dupuy in goals and Maggie Alford in defence. A Grade –Rosebud came out firing with strength we were able to match for the first quarter. Unfortunately, failing to convert both our centre pass and turnovers out of defence saw us come up short walking away with an 18 goal loss. Best were Liv Okey in GA and Laura Hopkins who stared in the mid court. Today will be the first time that all 5 of our teams play on the same day, so we are all looking forward to a big day of netball! Go Tigers
