Bendigo Community Bank MPNFL Update Round 15 2017 Welcome to Round 15 of the 2017 home and away season for both Peninsula FNL and Nepean FNL. We are certainly getting closer to the business end to the season with 4 weeks left of the home and away games for both football and netball. With some final spots up for grabs, it will be fascinating to watch the results of all games and the implications it will have on who makes finals this year. This week we are celebrating Multicultural Round. There are many cultures that have contributed to both football and netball and this week we are looking for everyone to celebrate their heritage and what their culture has brought to either football or netball.

2017 Presentation Night – Monday 4th September @ Mornington Racing Club Also, just a reminder that in 2017 the presentation night will be a combined night between both Nepean FNL and Peninsula FNL. It will be a fantastic event and one not to be missed. Invitations to clubs and possible award winners will be sent out after the conclusion of the home and away season. Bendigo Community Bank 2017 AFL MULTICULTURAL ROUND Football communities across Victoria will celebrate its cultural diversity in the 2017 Toyota AFL Multicultural Round. Held from July 28-30, the dedicated round highlights the contribution multicultural communities have made to the game’s history and welcomes new communities to embrace Australian Football as fans, players, umpires and administrators. This weekend, several community leagues and clubs, along with the Peter Jackson VFL, Swisse VFL Women’s and TAC Cup clubs are joining in the celebrations. Across Victoria, there are a number of fantastic multicultural and indigenous programs which continue to bring people from all cultures and walks of life together. Programs including Laguntas, Kickstart, Female Boorimul Program, Multicultural School Programs, TAC Towards Zero Diversity Squads and the All Nations highperformance teams are enabling more young talent to be identified and have access to more opportunities to become the next crop of AFL stars. In its fourth year, the AFL Victoria Multicultural Community Ambassador Program has experience significant growth, rising to over 290 participants this season, while the annual Unity Cup carnival had more than 250 players lacing up the boots this year. Through the tireless work of our Region Commissions and Metropolitan leagues, AFL Victoria continues to work hard to ensure all aspiring footballers, both male and female, are afforded an introduction to the game that will hopefully evolve into a long-term connection.

This weekend, AFL Victoria encourages everyone to embrace Multicultural Round and remember that Australian Football is a game for everyone, no matter who you are or where you’re from. Football Preview The stage is set By Toe Punt The stage has been set for one of the games of the season this Saturday at the Red Hill Showgrounds when the home side hosts Dromana for a place in the 2017 Nepean Division finals. There are just four home and away matches remaining for the season but there is no bigger one for the Hillmen and Tigers. Going in, there are four points and 1.2 percent between the teams. Dromana has the additional game up its sleeve and the Hillmen have the slightly better percentage (116 to 114.8). In the matches to follow, Dromana plays Somerville, Pearcedale and Rye. Red Hill plays Devon Meadows, Crib Point and Tyabb. The draw looks a little easier for the Hillmen; however, they simply must win this week to be any chance of playing finals. Two games out with three games remaining just doesn’t work for them. This week, both sides are coming off solid performances. Dromana has pushed both Frankston Bombers and Sorrento in successive weeks, both after giving-up large quarter time leads.

Red Hill’s form hasn’t been as consistent; however, its performance against Somerville on Saturday was terrific. The Hillmen led by four points at halftime but took total control in the second half, booting eight goals to three to win 13.12.90 to 7.11.53. Chris Irving was swung forward in the second half and again proved a handful, booting four goals, while Jake Mold was the best player on the ground with a couple of goals also. Matt Mitchell had a tagging role and carried it out sensationally. You can be assured that the Hillmen will be well aware of the influence that Ethan Johnstone and Sam Fowler (possibly) have on this game and you can expect them to be locked down. Dromana gave Sorrento a 40-point head start and only lost by eight points, 11.9.75 to 10.7.67. The margin was 35 points at three quarter time but the Tigers booted five goals to one in the last to get within a sniff. The more impressive thing for Dromana was the fact that they restricted the Sharks to 11 goals, something no club has been able to do this season. They did it too without Fowler and Ryan Smyth, two important players. They’ll need them both this week against Red Hill. Red Hill really responded last week, which was a credit to the team because their backs were to the wall.

Football Preview Dromana has lost their past two matches after winning seven on the trot – is there now a self-doubt? The sides met at Dromana in a Sunday game on June 11 and the Tigers belted the opposition by 10 goals. Expect it to be a lot closer today. FRANKSTON BOMBERS simply must be at their best today against SORRENTO. The last time the sides met was a month ago and the Bombers were belted by 97 points. One thing is for sure, the Bombers would have learnt plenty about themselves on that day and have too much pride to be embarrassed again. Its performances in the past couple of weeks against Dromana and Hastings has been both good and bad. Their starts have been dynamite (which it was against Sorrento too!); however, they have been outplayed in both the second and third quarters by the opposition. Last week was strange against Hastings. The Bombers were well in control at quarter time but opted to go defensive to almost save the game at that point. Had the Bombers continued to attack, I believe the game would have been out of Hastings’ grasp at half time. There’s no point trying to save games against Sorrento either. Take your foot off the pedal for any length of time and they’ll put you to the sword. And one final one Frankston – don’t try and go the heavy!

That didn’t work last time and won’t again. There’s a saying…….’don’t poke the bear’. Frankston has the talent. Its best is good enough. They just need to win this match at home against the Sharks, who remain undefeated. TYABB is coming-off a sensational win last week against Devon on the back of some solid performances in the past month. There is no reason it cannot beat RYE today. The last time the sides met, Tyabb trailed by just six points at half time but a poor third quarter handed Rye a 10-goal victory. The Demons too have gone through a bit of a rough trot and will be keen to sing the song again after a month. At home, the Demons should scrape home…just. ROSEBUD had 37 scoring shots to PEARCEDALE’S 13 the last time the sides met but the final margin was 79 points. It was great to see one of the MPNFL’s finest over the past 10 years in Rhys Bancroft playing in the two’s last week – he’ll be a handy back-up at the business end. Pearcedale was sensational last week across four quarters, which should give the team plenty of confidence. It’s not often this year that the Dales have performed for two hours. The Dales need to maintain possession of the footy and keep it off Rosebud. The Buds are dynamite when they have it and it’s hard to get it back off them.

Football Preview The season ended for SOMERVILLE last weekend and while it’s mathematically possible that they can make it, a poor percentage will make it very hard. DEVON MEADOWS beat them last time around at Glover Reserve by eight points and will be very keen to end their season this afternoon. The Meadows will be very disappointed in their performance last week and losing to Tyabb would be considered a new low for the club. There’s only one way to make amends and that’s to win at home and finish Somerville’s season. HASTINGS must bounce back against CRIB POINT today. It was 35 scoring shots to 14 the last time the sides met with the Blues celebrating a comfortable victory. The Blues had their chances last week and had it not been for a lack of concentration for five minutes in the last quarter, it would have won the match. The return of a couple of key defenders will sure up their defence. Matt Clifford and Shaun Foster have been two of the best recruits in memory and they just don’t put-in a poor performance. Steve Robb was super too. The Magpies are on the right track but they are not in the same league as Hastings right now. The Blues don’t want to do things the hard way this season and a big win here and a Frankston loss will see them go back inside the top three.

It was as cold as a mother in laws kiss, with a wind that tested the strength of the few follicles one has left. The unders were the first to brave the cyclonic conditions and did a good job of containing a fired up Dromana in the first. The next 2 quarters made the game safe, firstly a solid quarter with the wind but then to win the 3rd quarter kicking in to the wind was a very good effort. We’re all up for today’s challenge. The Scoobs was a tight scrap for the most part with conditions making it tough for both teams. It was never going to be a game full of highlights but good teams win in all conditions so it was good to come away with the 4 points. Today we embrace the next challenge of the Bombers at home. It’s the start of the final month of home and away and a great preparation for bigger things to come. The seniors was a game of 2 halves with our boys putting together a very good first half. The second quarter in particular had the boys pretty happy at halftime. The second half saw a change however with Dromana throwing everything at us right up until the final siren. It was a good test for the boys and nice to get the chocolates in the end. Thought of the week: If at first you don’t succeed, then skydiving is probably not for you!

Football last week was not very good with all teams losing to the Frankston Bombers, the 3rds keep plugging away, and hopefully before the year is out they will grab another 4 points, the Reserves had the opportunity to goe two games clear of Frankston and consolidate 3rd spot, but it was not to be, the Seniors likewise needed a win to put a gap between themselves and Frankston, but came up 4 points short, maybe not being smart enough with the wind cost us, who knows. Welcome today to all our former players and officials to the annual HFNC Past Players and Officials day, today we celebrate Premiership Anniversarys from 1907,1947,1977, so a big welcome to all the people involved in the 1977 flag, we hope you all have a great day, plus lets remember that 1947 was the year a skinny 17 year old kid named John Coleman first played for Hastings, he had an average first season at Hastings, he only kicked 136 Goals, played in a Premiership and won the league Best and Fairest, must of been some player, so to all the past players and officials hope you all have a ball.

The under 19’s faced a depleted Pearcedale side with the Panthers only managing to get 14 players onto the field. It was a steady performance from the pointers, finishing eventual winners by 116 points. Joel Wisken pulled a Brad Dick circa 2009 performance out of the bag, kicking 6 goals, whilst Corbin Pett was also a prominent figure in the forward line kicking 2 goals and providing a good contest. It was a strong start for the reserves side but a strong last quarter blew the Magpies chances away, Pearcedale finishing 52-point victors. The Southey man Tim Cook was best afield playing down back whilst Jarrod “Fiskolicious” Fisk played well having come up from the under 19’s game. Gordon “ghost mode” Frankel also featuring amongst the best players. Special mentions go out to Warren Herrington, Jared Newton and Glenn Barclay for pulling on the boots coming out of retirement. After having beaten the Panthers to secure their second win earlier in the season, the seniors were unable to replicate their performance to repeat that result. The panthers finished with a 33-point win. Matthew Sloper was strong down back, providing good positioning, whilst Dean Warry proved a strong presence in the forward line. Liam O’conner played well between the two arcs. This week Crib Point will face rival Hastings in what promises to be a fiery contest for all 3 sides. GO CRIB!

The Unders struck back from a couple of testing weeks to defeat the League front runners whilst the Seniors kept their season alive with a gritty second half. A five goal to two against the breeze (gale) last quarter left the Hill’s supporters in a good frame of mind. And so today. All to play for- a finals spot to the winners against our long time foes the Dromana Tigers who are coming off several losses. Don’t leave anything in the tank. Our round 15 clash against local rivals Red Hill is sponsored by HockingStuart Dromana & Rosebud The U19s started well against Sorrento but were unable to maintain the pressure for the full game losing by33 points. The reserves followed a similar pattern to the U19s by leading early but falling away as the game progressed Sorrento started the game with an obvious preset plan to ‘rough’ up some of our younger players which allowed them to hold us scoreless in the first term while they got out to a 35 point lead. The second quarter again saw Sorrento out score Dromana 3 goals to two and go to the main break with a 40 point lead. The third term was Dromana’s with the wind against them they scored 3 goals to 2 and reducing the lead to 35 points. The last quarter was an arm wrestle for the first ten minutes then Dromana’s fitness began to show with our forwards getting loose and ticking the scoreboard over. When the siren went Dromana were running all over Sorrento but had fallen short by 8 points after kicking 34 points to 7 in the final stanza and nearly bringing off the boil over of the season. The MPNFL in partnership with Peninsula Health, Mornington Peninsula Shire and Frankston Council are promoting Smoke Free venues and expect to see some initiatives from the club over the coming weeks. Congratulations to Ryan Spooner who today plays his 200th Senior game & qualifies for Life Membership! Ryan started his senior career at Rosebud in 2003, was captain 2008-2016, is a 3-time Club best & fairest & 2-time premiership player – a true Club champion! Last week was no exception, for our past players & premiership champs our current boys produced a clean sweep-3-zip against the old foe Rye. The Past Players Committee did a great job getting so many 67, 97 & 07 premiership players back, along with many other legends & stalwarts. The stories got better & the noses longer as the evening progressed. A great day & evening. On the field GB, Jack, Wilo, Spoons, Seb & BT were terrific all day & laid the foundations for the demolition 8 goal final quarter. What a great week at the Dales with 2 great wins on the board with the Magoos and the Seniors winning their games. Bad luck to the Unders with an undermanned team. Keep your heads up boys. We head down to Rosebud this week. Let’s keep the effort up and give it a red hot go. With the season on the line the 1s are still a mathematical chance to play finals but we need some results to go our way if we are going to sneak in. With 18 senior players unavailable last weekend, our injuries were going to catchup with us eventually! At Red Hill not only was it miserable day off the field it was even more miserable on it! We went up the mountain and got zero from 3, which was extremely disappointing for the club. The U19s could have sewn up top spot but kicked into a gale in the 1st quarter and never recovered. In fact all 3 grades lost the toss and were made to kick against a very strong wind and to be honest we played catchup footy for the rest of the day. The 2s are/were terribly undermanned and were slaughtered in the 1st half. With Ronnie, Page Bros and Doug Sherlock coming out of retirement, the lads fought on hard in the 2nd half but fell some 8 goals behind. Luke Burton played an outstanding game of football.

Towards the back end of the 3rd and the start of the last Red Hill kicked 6 unanswered goals to basically snuff out any chance we had. It was a terribly disappointing result, yes we are under manned but we had so much to play for. It was pleasing to see 5 U19s play and great performance from Tom Roberts in the ruck. We find ourselves in sunny Somerville today, with a chance to make amends for a disappointing round 14 against the Yabbies who gave us a fair nipping in both the ressies and seniors. Hopefully it’s onwards and upwards for both our clubs, as it is a stepping stone for the Yabs and a wake up call for us. Always a good battle against the Eagles, and an 8 point margin in Round 5 would indicate we are in for another rip snorter today. After the game today, make sure you get around the Comedy Night back at Glover Reserve. Going to be a massive night, and as this goes to print there was only a few tickets left so if you haven’t got yours yet make sure you speak to Kingy ASAP to lock in your seat. Past Players Day today at the club, and Past Players v Present Day Players Golf Day tomorrow, at Safety Beach, a big week-end and let’s hope the boys put on 2 good games today. Tonight it’s OKTOBER FEST 2017 at the club. 7pm start, $15.00 per head, which includes a Stein on arrival. A massive night it will be, every-one is welcome. Tyabb today in what is out last home game for the year, let’s hope the boys come to play and give our home supporters something to cheer about. It’s been a great year for the Rye under 19’s in 2017 and we are building something special for the coming seasons. Leigh Morse has been re-appointed to take on the Under 19’s for season 2018, well done. Also great to see Leigh in the best players last week in his 100th senior game, magnificent achievement. Last week, the U/19’s, with only 17 players had a real dip and probably should have won, however went down by 10 points. Great effort guys, lets finish the season off with 2 wins. The reserves were also undermanned due to a few injuries, but battled away all game. Great to see “Swervin” Merv Watkins get best, followed by Doggie, Possum, Blood Dow, Matt W and Cam Dunn. The seniors were in the game for 3 quarters, but couldn’t hold Rosebud in the last quarter against a strong breeze. Plenty of positives and with 11 of the 21 players under 21, we can’t wait for season 2018. Harry Whitty, was magnificent and BOG, along with Morsey, Animal Cole, Matt “Fingers” McIndoe, Pistol Pete and young Gus Gordon.

We travelled to Devon Meadows last round with high expectation after 4 consistent rounds of footy. The senior match was highly competitive with many lead changed across the game. Devon held the lead at the end of the first, Tyabb at half time & Devon fighting back at the end of the third. Devon threw everything at Tyabb in the first 18minutes of the last but with defensive pressure being applied by Tyabb scoring was difficult for Devon. The last 10minutes of the game saw the Tyabb boys lift & kick 3 goals 1 to win the game. A terrific effort by all the boys with a never say die attitude from our young group. Well done to everyone involved & special thanks to U/19 player Ben Porra who played well in the 2nds team & then assisted the seniors with being the runner. After some soul searching from the previous weeks disappointing performance the reserves were determined to turn things around. It was tough conditions for both sides with the wind howling to one end. The game started off congested which suited us early as we were into the breeze to start. A couple of goals to us in the first quarter proved to be the only ones kicked all game to that end of the ground. After quarter time the game opened up and our forwards took advantage with some good goal kicking and unselfish play. It was a big improvement the way everyone worked together & the back line rebounded strongly all day. FUNCTIONS - Hypno Night Aug 5th NIP! NIP!

Bendigo Community Bank Somerville – 1st / 56pts / 13-0 / WWWW: Next game v Devon Meadows The Eagles have had the perfect season so far, with 13 wins and 0 losses. Somerville have gone from the hunter to the hunted with each week their opponents looking to be the side dishes them their first loss. The next two rounds will be another two W’s added to the tally but rounds 17 and 18 will provide a great insight to finals, with games against Tyabb and Crib Point respectively it will be a great tune up for finals style netball. Crib Point – 2nd / 52pts / 12-1 / WWWW: Next game v Bye The reining premiers haven’t really done a lot wrong in their title defence. Only lost one game to ladder leader Somerville by 5 goals and generally win well most other weeks. In the next four weeks, the Magpies have a Bye followed by games against Rosebud, Red Hill and Somerville. Everyone’s eyes will be on the last game in round 18 as most people anticipate this will be the Grand Final, a win here might be the mental edge that Crib Point need over Somerville as the will more than likely be playing each other 3 times in the space of 4 weeks. Tyabb – 3rd/ 48pts/ 11-2/ WWWW: Next game v Rye The Yabbies are sitting pretty in third spot on the ladder now, and have a mixed bag of games in the next four rounds. The next two week’s Tyabb will have pencilled in wins against Rye and Pearcedale, while in round 17 against Somerville will be their greatest test leading into finals. This game is crucial to win or at least an honourable loss of 5 goals or less will have the Yabbies feeling they have what it takes come finals time. Red Hill- 4th/ 36pts/ 8-5/ LWWW: Next game v Dromana Red Hill have had a fantastic season since about round five. The girls in Red and White certainly have worked hard to currently sit forth and will be looking to cement their place in finals. Games against Dromana and Devon Meadows should be marked as wins in their books with the last two games against Crib Point and Tyabb will be the true test for Red Hill as a win against either of these sides will surely lock in final action for 2017. Frankston - 5th/ 36pts/ 7-5/ BWLL: Next game v Serrento The Bombshells certainly have had a big dip at season 2017. Frankston will need to win all its last four games and for Red Hill to lose at least two of their four, to secure a finals place. And it is a quite a possibility with games against Sorrento, Rye, Devon Meadows, Pearcedale. Who knows what can happen but the race for fourth spot is certainly about to heat up!

Rosebud – 6th/ 28pts/ 6-7/ WLLL: Next game v Pearcedale A solid season from the Buds this year. Some patches of brilliance and other weeks will be forgotten. Rosebud would have loved to have played finals this year but from this point it is just not possible. Already 8 points behind Red Hill and Frankston, the last four games the Bud’s take on Pearcedale, Crib Point, Sorrento and have a bye in round 17. Even though finals might not be possible, finishing the season strongly will be the aim for them to carry into 2018. Devon meadows – 7th/ 24pts/5-8/LLWW: Next game v Somerville Devon Meadows just haven’t had the best year in 2017. The last two weeks have been tough on the Meadows girls with losses against Crib Point and Tyabb and it doesn’t get any easier with games against Somerville, Red Hill and Frankston who are all finals sides. The Panthers can either call it a day now and just go through the motions or really have a say on who plays finals in 2017. Rye - 8th/ 22pts/ 3-9-1/ LLBL: Next game v Tyabb Rye’s season has had its ups and downs and one that has been a great journey for development. No doubt that in 2018 we will see the red and blue pushing for finals again. On the run home, the Dee’s have Tyabb, Frankston and Dromana with possible two wins from 3, it could be a nice way to finish off the year. Dromana – 9th/ 8pts/ 3-9-1/ WLLL: Next game v Red Hill Dromana looked like they were going to take the next step at the start of this year, but unfortunately it hasn’t worked out that way in 2017. The Tigers have probably gone back a few steps but not to say they haven’t had some big wins as well. In the last four rounds Dromana face Red Hill, Somerville, Pearcedale and Rye. While the first two might not be wins they last two certainly provide the opportunity to finish the season on a high. Pearcedale – 10th/ 16pts/ 2-9-2/ LBLL: Next game v Rosebud Pearcedale have been there about this year but haven’t been able to put it together for four quarters in most games. The Panthers could have been sitting high on the ladder if it wasn’t for two draws. The last four games see’s Pearcedale take on Rosebud, Tyabb, Dromana and Frankston. A big chance to win a few in those games and maybe also spoil Frankston’s finals hopes in the last game. Sorrento – 11th/ 4pts/ 0-14/ LLLB: Next game v Frankston The Sharks have been brilliant in 2017, and while you may look at the 0 in the win’s column it’s all about developing their young stars and giving them a taste top grade netball. While it’s not expected from the outside for a win in the last two games against Frankston and Rosebud (Sorrento played R17 v Rye earlier in the year), the girls certainly deserve credit for continuing their netball education that will no doubt hold them in good shape in coming years.

Sorrento Sharks Thanks Rattray and Walker Rye for your ongoing sponsorship! Last week the U/17’s had a very close game playing the top of the ladder, Dromana. We played an amazing game as a team and were up almost the whole game. In the last quarter unfortunately dromana were too good and ended up beating us by 1 goal. Well done to Liv who was on fire with her goals and played her best game of the season! Very proud of the girls for not giving up and playing an awesome game even though we didnt end up with the win. Looking forward to our last game against rosebud in a couple of weeks! C grade girls this week gave their best efforts. The girls in goals worked well in the circle and didn’t miss many opportunities to score. In the end Dromana were to good for us but let’s keep up the good work next week. B girls played an awesome.Jen, Brooke and Macy worked well together in the defending end keeping dromana from scoring. We had our center player Ruby out in goals this week with Emma and Sarah. Ebony worked her butt off in WA along with Charlie trying to get the ball to our goalers great work this week girls. A girls played a great game even though it was an extremely hard game considering how slippery the court was! Girls came out firing as they always do!! Anna working hard to feed the ball into the ring. Sophie killed it in mid court in all aspects!!! Well done to defenders never giving up. Good luck against Frankston girls!!!!

Crib Point Magpies

It was amazing to see last week just how far our club has come this year. D grade took it to the wire losing by just 6 goals to a team that a few weeks ago beat them by 20+ goals. Our girls kept pushing all game getting amazing turnovers, unfortunately Pearcedale were the ones to finish with the four points. BOC went to Bridget for one of her best games yet in GD reading the play so well and Chloe for getting so many tips and hands to the ball. C grade proved why they are grand final contenders last week getting back on the winners list with a 3 goal win over a team they lost to by a small margin in previous weeks. Our girls went out determined, lost their momentum a bit in the last quarter but remained in control. BOC went to Ange for her amazing directing of play in Centre.

B grade had a very comfortable win over Pearcedale using it as a chance to focus on aspects of their game to work on. With the wind taking control of the ball in the air, the girls kept it short and sharp providing a great flow down the court. BOC went to Fi for her amazing passes into the goal ring and pressure around the court. A grade also had a comfortable win and used it as a chance to try out different positions around the court. The girls were our and firing from the first whistle playing in finals form. BOC went to Eb who had a very strong game and shot amazingly. This week we have Hastings, a great rivalry and what should be a good 3 games! Let’s go for 3 wins! Go Crib!

Tyabb Yabbies

Last round we travelled to Devon Meadows where luckily their hospitality was warmer than the arctic conditions the weather provided. D Grade showed some great improvement in their use of the ball & pressure they applied. Chloe & Megan did their best to adjust to the Devon goalers but the ball was coming in too quickly & precisely to turn much ball over. In attack Georgia stepped up & stood strong in goals. Lace & Morgs continued their excellent form in C Grade. It takes great determination to out rebound your opponent & both players were able to dominate in this area. Jayde worked tirelessly in attack ensuring she was a safe option all over the court. B Grade had an excellent start & got a quick jump on Devon. The girls showed composure all match which was vital when inform Sterchs went down with an ankle injury. It took a little time for the balance to settle in attack but Rhi stepped up to turn over more ball in defence. A fantastic whole team effort. In her 50th club match, KB provided great drive down the court and back up for her A Grade team mates. She was able to combine well with both Watto & Julia in the circle. D grade girls had an awesome game with Zoe and Grace strong in the goal ring. Liv had a great game and created many turnovers in the centre court and passes perfectly into the goalers. Mariah played with strength in the defence! We were a force throughout the whole game and everyone played their role and came away with a terrific win! It was a tough day for our C grade girls, but it was awesome to see Millie step up from u/17s and have a great game in goals. Chloe M played strong in the defence end combining with Chloe RH and Liv Raven they produced some dynamic turnovers. Somerville were too strong on the day but it was terrific to see our girls never gave up and fought hard all game. With a few more consistent games recently our B grade team were looking forward to coming up against Somerville again, as they are certainly the benchmark team, which they proved today with a strong game. So while Sommie were too good for us this round we are still working well as a team and the future looks good for our club. The A grades next few games are crucial if we are to maintain a position in the top four. The game today proved we are still working towards our best netball, which we will need to play these last few rounds. Our Red Hill Girls welcome back Soph from her work away and are very thankful to our umpires who put in every week, without you there is no game!

Frankston Bombshells Sometimes life hands you a perfect day; sipping chai at the summit of Khardun La, stargazing in Pisco Elqui in Chile or wearing merino thermals because you’re experiencing blizzard like conditions and wind chill factor of minus 5 in Hastings. Western Port marina – where the water is murky but the wins are clear. D grade will have to face ASADA this week after yet another clinical victory. They have the rest of the competition suss on their performance enhancing tactics, little do they know that our ‘preworkout’ is a V and trying to get to the court before the umpire asks to check nails. Bec, George and Cell in defence keeping Hastings to 4 goals is actually a bit mean. C grade; where we could have filled a side out of the people in Bali, Thailand or Splendour in the Grass. However the bare 4 plus some put on quite a show and just got over the line by a 39 goal margin. That full court defence and straight flat drives into the wind were strong and props to our girls for picking up those loose ball gets. B grade got out of the blocks with a gentle trot, but that is an improvement from the slow loading internet explorer speed we have been trying in recent weeks. Some high flying netball in the first quarter wasn’t working for us so we attempted to try something different and actually listen to our coach. Fast drives from Jen and Tay got us in front and were as annoying as those pop up ads you get when you’re on disreputable websites. Lets keep the wins up, Go Bomber!

Somerville Eagles

Last round we faced Red Hill at Red Hill in very cold conditions! We were lucky to avoid the wind, playing inside. The D girls continued to show great improvement, only losing by a couple of goals. They fought hard and showed Red Hill that they are a different team to the team they were in round 1. They had good pressure and made good leads down the court. The C girls held onto their top position and also displayed how their team has developed and grown over the season. The defenders and goalers worked really well together and the mid court movement increased throughout the game with some beautiful passages of play down the court. The B girls played their toughest game of the season so far. They really changed the way they played in the second half, fine tuning a couple of aspects that weren’t working in the first half, enabling them to finish with another good win. The A girls also had a tough contest throughout the first quarter with the game being goal for goal. The girls though transitioned the ball down the court out of defence really effectively and into their goalers. There were some great drives and everyone worked hard to capitalise on turnovers which resulted in another win. This round we face Devon at the Nest where 3 out of our 4 teams will be defending their top position on the ladder. GO EAGLES!!

A really successful day out for our netball club last weekend. U/17s, C, B and A all the took the court and were pumped to come away with 4 wins! U/17s - We had a really slow start and struggled to regain composure. At one point in the third quarter we were 7 goals down and a win looked unlikely. Full credit to the girls, they managed to slow the ball down and look after it in transition and score steadily for the rest of the game, winning by 1 goal in the dying minute of the match. Awards went to Tahlia Walter and Shaye Fitzpatrick. C Grade - C Grade didn’t miss a beat on Saturday and looked in control for the whole game. Shooting accuracy was spot on with the girls scoring their highest score for the season and improving on their round 2 effort against Sorrento. Awards went to Amy Ridgeway and Belinda Ingram B Grade - B Grade further highlighted exactly how much they have improved since the start of the season! We had a 4 goal win to Sorrento in round 2, and Saturday we took home a 42 goal win. The team have really clicked and are playing a really high standard of netball with 3 wins in a row. Awards went to Sahra Dupuy and Hayley Pollard. A Grade - It was great to see A Grade have a strong win, taking down Sorrento by 35 goals. We started a bit shaky forcing the ball too quickly, but the girls regained composure and worked the ball into their shooters well, who shot with stellar accuracy on the day. Award winners were Laura Hopkins and Olivia Okey. This weekend sees us take on Red Hill, which should be a good match up for a number of our grades. Laura Vidotto will play her 100th game, which we look forward to celebrating. Dotti is a much loved member of our squad and a special congratulations to her for reaching 100 games!

Hastings Blues D grade started the day very slowly. Matilda Strange filled in for D grade this week and earned herself and best on court in the goal defence position, Brodie Moncrieff also had a great game in the wing defence position. D grade will need to re-group for their next contest against Crib Point. C grade were also out classed by the Bombshells. They fought hard throughout the match but couldn’t shake the experience Bombers girls. Ruby Hannaford is growing in confidence every week and played a great match. B grade got off to a flyer in the first quarter, but the bombers girls came out hard in the second and took the lead at half time. Tash Green continued her dominant form in the Wing Defence position. Too many mistakes throughout the match basically cost us the win, in the end going down by 4 goals. Ladies Day and Crib Point this week will be a great day.

U17s – Despite not gaining the points we showed positive aspects & sections of good play. The game highlighted the improvement in the girls skills individually & strengthening team spirit that we have been focussing on throughout the season. Awesome job by Miki who has improved immensely & to Liz for her consistent defensive efforts C-Grade – It was a confident start to the game, every player executed the drills & team play we’ve worked on. Shooting was on fire & defence was outstanding & spoke the whole time. Mid court slowed the play & passed with confidence. Thanks to Casey for filling in. Best was Haylee for killing it in every position she was thrown into & 2nd was Ash for some freak shots B-Grade – As expected it was a battle to the end against Rye! The freezing weather was an extra challenge but when our hands thawed we had some really good passages of play. It’s a shame Rye got a few goals up by 1/2 time. The final quarter was a nail biter, we were hungry & while we won the quarter Rye came away with a 3 goal win. Best players were Amy (shooting & defending!) & Leshelle A-Grade – Great win by the team with a consistent 4 quarter effort. A hard played first quarter set up a 10 goal lead. Injuries to Sam & Tracey forced a number of positional changes but everyone pulled together & kept our lead increasing for the rest of the game. Rye Demons

It was a freezing day at Rosebud last Saturday, but even though it was cold the sun was shining. Our under 17s started of the day with a great win. The girls worked hard demonstrating all they have learned over the season. Ruby and Miranda combined beautifully in defence, Taylah and Shannon both shot well and the centre court girls played beautifully. The Rye girls won by 15 goals. Best on court was Ruby Jones. The C grade team started off slowly and had to work hard throughout the game to pull back the score. Unfortunately even with Jade moving into goals and Maddie into wing defence we couldn’t work our way back into the game. We went down by 14 goals with Maddie Davies best on court. B grade worked tirelessly throughout their game, winning by 3 goals. Eliza and Hailey played well in defence and Michaela Todd was best on court. A grade were no match for Rosebud this time around. The girls just couldn’t get it together in the first half. Things improved with Ruby and Taylah in goals and Georgie moving into defence, but we just couldn’t bring the score back going down by 31 goals. Best on Court was Ruby Jones for the second time that day! Great effort Ruby. Go Dees!

Pearcedale Panthers PFNC braced the cold on Saturday to complete round 14! D Grade brought home a win, every person putting in 100% to get them over the line. A,B & C unfortunately didnt come away with any wins. Each team applied what they are learning at training to the game and really pulled together to achieve their goals. The great atmosphere from all grades on the day brought every one together and was a great thing to see. Bring on Round 15!
