MPNFL Updates Welcome to the 2017 Finals Series. This is an exciting time of the year where we get to see the best of our competitions compete for the title of Premiers. Well done to all teams, clubs that have been successful in making it to finals this year. To all the teams, clubs that may not be here this year, we can only hope this drives to continue to improve the following year so we can see you in action in business end of the season. Week 1 Finals Fixture See Page…. Finals Venue Update 2017 will see football and netball finals action being played at many different venues across the Mornington Peninsula. Please see below for the venue allocated for each week of finals.

AFL South East Competition Review On Tuesday night, the AFL South East Commission presented the adopted structure for the 2018 season and beyond. The senior competition structure will be adopted in the following stages: The AFL South East senior competitions be restructured via a transition process as per “Option 1” in the “Draft Recommendations” document issued on 2nd June 2017. However, that will be implemented in a staged way as per below: 2018 – A divisional structure between MPNFL Clubs. Division 1 and Division 2 comprising a mix of Nepean and Peninsula clubs. Existing SEFNL competition to remain in its current form for 2018. 2019 – A full divisional structure incorporating the 2 Divisions of MPNFL and the SEFNL clubs, into a minimum of 3 Divisions

- Cost for entry will be $13 for all minor finals and $15 for the Grand Final, Aged Pensioner and Student Concessions apply and 16 & under are Free.

2020 – Pending total AFLSE senior club numbers, the creation of a 4th Division to assist with the introduction of newly established or transferred clubs.

- Football records will be available in hard copy during finals also being available in the online format for free.

AFL Vic Country AFL BLIND RECEIVES FUNDING NOD Blind and vision-impaired Victorians will have the opportunity to participate in Australian Rules football next season, following VicHealth’s Innovation Challenge funding announcement last week. AFL Victoria’s inaugural AFL Blind program is one of six projects that have been chosen as part of VicHealth’s $500,000 Innovation Challenge: Sport program, which supports new initiatives that help less active Victorians to take part in sport activities. In conjunction with Blind Sports & Recreation Victoria and AFL, AFL Victoria’s AFL Blind project will strive to develop an adapted version of Australian Rules football for the Victorian blind and impaired community.

“VicHealth is proud to support such exciting and innovative concepts like AFL Blind. We know that being more active is good for the health of all Victorians, however there are certain barriers including age, disability and skill which prevent people getting involved,” Ms Rechter said. “We’re excited to be partnering with organisations like AFL Victoria as they trial their programs and get even more Victorians active in new and creative ways.” Blind and vision impaired Victorians keen to be part of the first-ever AFL Blind program should contact Tim Nield at tim.nield@afl.com.au to register their interest.

AFL Victoria FIDA Football & AAA Programs Manager Tim Nield said VicHealth’s support will help continue AFL Victoria’s commitment to make Australian Rules football the most accessible sport for all Victorians. “There are approximately 1.1 million Victorians who have a disability, with only 1 in 4 participating in sport and recreation compared to 3 in 4 of the general public, so VicHealth’s funding is extremely important in helping us rectify these figures,” Nield said. “We are excited to work alongside Blind Sports & Recreation Victoria, AFL and key industry experts in this area to help us develop the AFL Blind program which we believe will help increase the physical activity levels of inactive Victorians with disability. “AFL Victoria has a number of disability programs which offer people with disability the opportunity to participate in our great game, and through VicHealth’s support, we will now be able to extend our programs to allow any Victorian with any disability the chance to play Australian Rules football.”

Football Preview By Simon McEvoy PINES and MT ELIZA have taken very different paths to the finals, but it matters little when they meet in today’s do-or-die elimination final. It’s how they negotiate 120 minutes of finals pressure that counts. Pines set the pace for much of the season, and looked on track for a top-two finish, before a late-season dip in form shunted them to fourth spot. Mt Eliza has been hot and cold, its top-five credentials not guaranteed until the very end of the home and away season. Pines has got its running game going in the past fortnight, with ball magnet Luke Potts leading the way, ably assisted by offsider Paul Scanlon. Others have followed their lead, including Aaron Ludewig, Brad Kiely, Corey Ash and Patty Jackson. Two weeks ago Pines played at Chelsea, today’s venue, and fired off 18 goals. Knowing they play the ground well will give the Pythons extra confidence. On the other hand, Mt Eliza was beaten on this ground earlier in the season. Troy Shannon’s Redlegs are arguably in season best form going into the finals. They’ve won three in a row and their entire list appears to be playing with confidence. They’ve even unearthed a new attacking weapon, with defender Karl Lombardozzi in the goals last week. Interestingly, Pines and Mt Eliza met each other in the first week of last season’s finals – the Redlegs winning their qualifying final tilt by 61 points. SUNDAY’S qualifying final pits two genuine flag contenders against each other, BONBEACH and EDITHVALE-ASPENDALE. Both sides have the talent, coaching expertise and X factor to win the whole thing. Coached by the astute Steve Hughes, Bonbeach, with the competition’s leading goal kicker Trent DennisLane, is a well-balanced, reliable outfit with the likes of Shane McDonald, Dylan Jones, Jackson Casey, Owen Hulett and Gary Carpenter. They know what it takes to win finals and won’t be overawed by the extra intensity of this contest. McDonald would dearly love to add a premiership to his decorated Peninsula career. Graeme Yeats’ Edi-Asp has been the dominant side of the past two months, and takes a seven-game winning streak into the finals.

The Eagles’ season could have gone one of two ways when they were 4-4 – and out of the five - after Round 8. They chose to knuckle down and fight, and their Round 10 win over Frankston YCW was seasondefining. On a roll, Edi-Asp will take some stopping. Steve Mannix continues to lead the Eagles superbly, while Matt Clark, Mark Mullins, Michael Bussey, Todd Woodbridge and Bradley Tagg are playing good footy. Strong forward Mick Meehan, so vital to the Eagles, has booted 14 goals in his past four games to arrive at the finals in good form. PYTHONS CONFIDENT IN THE RESERVES… PINES have had the wood on FRANKSTON YCW this season, beating them twice, but the Stonecats believe the pressure of an elimination final will bring out their best. Both these sides have the talent to go deep into the finals, but getting past today will be the trick. Glenn Cornell’s Pythons have plenty of match winners with the likes of Taylor Meyer, Damian Plane, Gavin Stretch, Brenton Cowell, Chris Guganovic and Adam McPherson. Frankston YCW will look to the experienced Andrew Schneider and Michael Chaplin, along with Marco Kelsall, Owen Vine, Brendan Marchmont and Charlie Patterson. Only a kick separated SEAFORD and BONBEACH last week. Now the rivalry will go to a new level when the Tigers and Sharks face-off in a qualifying final. Bonbeach triumphed a week ago, stretching its winning streak to 10. The red-hot Sharks have plenty of spirit and talent, with the likes of Todd Cracknell, Dale Donkin, Anthony Hogan and Chris Pendleton in good form at the business end of the season. BULLDOGS BARKING IN THE UNDER 19s… EDI-ASP and MORNINGTON meet for the second time in seven days in this do-or-die elimination final. Mornington finished strongly to beat Edi-Asp by 23 points last week after scores were tied at half time. The rousing win clinched a finals berth for the Bulldogs, who have gathered momentum as the season has gone on and arrive at the finals in good shape and confident, especially with Kalen Bird, Oliver Walsh, Ryan Rose and Kyle Bleazby up and about.

Football Preview Edi-Asp will look to draw on the spirit it showed in winning four games in a row between Rounds 7-10 when Mitch Allen, Liam McKay, Harley Dale and Cameron Neale ran rampant. On Sunday, FRANKSTON YCW and LANGWARRIN begin their finals campaigns in what shapes as a classic qualifying final clash. Finishing the home-and-away season with identical 14-4 records, there’s nothing between them. While YCW fired off 24 goals last week to finish the regular season with a bang, and Langy lost, YC will be wary of the Kangaroos after losing to them a fortnight ago. On that occasion, Langwarrin’s classy quartet of Nathan Allen, Kye Whitford, Liam McDonald and Jack Lacey ignited a second half charge that left the Stonecats stunned. YCW, though, have class on every line with the inform Callan Gregory, Harrison Lane, Josh O’Toole and Josh Berenger to play key roles.

Club Notes Pines Pythons

Today is a day we have not seen for many years, where Pines have 2 teams playing finals on the same day. With a lot of players pushing for a game we expect to see a ruthless display of relentless pressure football from the boys selected. They have waited too long for this opportunity and expect Paddy and Corny to have the boys firing from the start. We are also expecting to have a big Pines following today at Chelsea to urge our players on and make some noise. To the under 19s, congratulations on your season. There is a lot to look forward to and we can all expect to see some significant success next year which will be great reward for your perseverance playing against older and more mature bodies. To the trainers, water carriers and time keeper, thanks for making yourselves available each week for all three games. To the committee and executive the club thanks you, as well as some of the unsung people that work behind the scenes, marking the ground, padding the posts, cleaning and tidying etc. You are volunteers that are the core group that hold communities like ours together. To our netballers who despite the delayed provision of the on-site court, worked through this challenge. We can now look forward to next year where you can train at night under lights and come into the club afterwards, for a meal. Bonbeach Sharks

Finals are here and we are incredibly proud of the efforts of all our players in the H&A season who wore a Guernsey or dress throughout 2017. Without all of our wonderful volunteers lead by Matt, Sue, Al and Smitty, our club would not be able to function and be in the positive position it is today! Netball President Jess spoke well last week after the Rd 18 game about the exciting culture and growth within the netball department as we progress nicely into 2018. The netballers and footballers have supported each other well all year, it’s a great atmosphere. Thomo and the u/19s (and u/17s) have done a tremendous job and should be proud of the season. We look forward to seeing the development of our u/19 team next year and some earning a chance of playing senior footy! The 1sts and 2nds have ticked the first box and allowed a double chance in a competitive finals race. Both teams have been in good shape recently lead by Hughesy, Bully and our on-field leaders. Frankston YCW Stonecats Last week saw all 6 football and netball teams saluting at the winners post to end the home and away season. The seniors had a hard fought win over a committed Chelsea with Byza, Matty Laf and Luke Paynter the best. Cappys boys after finishing the season on top have a week off to freshen up for the 2nd Semi. The Ressies finished the season well with a good win (Marco, Griffo and Brandon best) to go into their Elimination Final against Pines with confidence. The Unders cruised to victory with Cal, H and the Josh’s starring and now look forward to a Qualifying Final against their long term rival, Langwarrin in what should be a cracker of a game. The Kittens finished off the year in style (see Netball notes) with B,C and D Grade finishing second on the ladder and have a crack at a GF spot this Sunday at FDNA. Good luck to the girls in their finals campaign. Last weekend we welcomed John Silvester ‘Sly of the underworld’ down to the club to our luncheon and talk to the club faithful about all things underworld. Sly had all on the edge of their seats hanging on his every word and story. Thanks to Mr Pres for arranging. The Big Bash returns to the club again this year with Sam Kekovich, the Nelson Twins and Rohan Gazzard (as MC). The Bash will be held at the clubrooms on Saturday 23rd September starting at 12pm. Langwarrin Kangaroos The last home and away game of the season saw us head to Mt. Eliza. Unfortunately we didn’t come away with a win. As has been the case for most of the year our Reserves and Seniors endeavor couldn’t be questioned. Our skills let us down. Lets enjoy the break , regroup and make sure we are all back on board in 2018 for it to all start again. Our Under 19’s have had a great year, and on Sunday take on YCW in the Qualifying Final. When we bring our best footy, and display the effort , skill and teamwork that we have all year we should be a real chance. Good luck to all players , coaches , support staff and supporters. We know the blue and white army will be out in full to cheer on the Mighty Langy Kangaroos. Firstly congratulations to all 4 Netball Teams and the 3 Football Teams on making it to the 2017 Final Series. A great effort from all concerned. Today the Seniors get their opportunity to showcase their wares and we wish Troy and the boys all the best v Pines. Last week we took on Langwarrin and scored strong wins in all Grades. The Under 19’s are hitting their straps at the right time of the year, finishing on top with a hard fought 22 point win. Zane Hill booted a couple to be in the best, along with Cal Rice, Kurt, Loges, Max Rea and Jacko. The Reserves took on a depleted Langy side and recorded a 20 goal win to hold on to Top spot. Cranny (4), McIlroy (3) and Wetters (3) continued their recent good form, along with Smaley, Cuz, Chris Burton and Ricey. The Seniors started well with 6 goals to nil and extended the margin at each break, winning by 92. Knotty and Lombo booted 5 each and Cappy was lively with 4. On the back of a solid season of football for the Under 19’s we are excited to be entering the finals series knowing that only our best football will be enough to keep us progressing. Not much separates the top five teams and we are hopeful that our consistent form over the past ten weeks will hold us in good stead moving forward. Seaford V Mt Eliza

1st & 2nd Semi Final2017

Seaford have been in form all of season 2017. Mt Eliza have been slightly more inconsistent but definitely have the talent to win and progress through the finals series.

Karingal V Edi Asp Karingal have only lost the one game this year to the Eagles while Edi have lost the two. For the last two years in a row, the Bulls have lost the grand final to the Eagles. In fact since Peninsula netball’s inception, the Eagles have only lost one grand final in A Grade to Mt Eliza.

This week will be played outdoor at Jubilee Park – both teams have played there during the season however home courts are indoors. The Redlegs have VNL star Stephanie Hille back for this game. Another tough one to call but definitely will be an excellent game to watch!

The Eagles success has been constant and they perform well under pressure, especially in finals. The Bulls have been in from this season though and have had only the one serious injury to defender Renee Brewster. Can the Bulls turn the tables on the Eagles and proceed straight through to the grand final?

The Semi Finals bought to you by The Legends! This weekend heralds the start of another final series & it’s very apt that this round is sponsored by our club Legends. We started our netball life in the Nepean League in 2010 & we were very proud of our coaches & players, when all our teams made the finals, with the B grade & U.17 teams bringing home Premierships! In 2011, we were the Foundation Club of the newly formed Peninsula Netball League & we have been very fortunate since then, that all teams, across all grades, have always featured in finals! This year is no exception. The Legends have been a great support during our journey & as we move into another phase, with the new competition structure in 2018, we thank Kevin, Kenny, Billy, Sully, Gavin, Gasha, Gus, Terry, Steve, Pete, Larry & all the rest of the gang who gather every Friday night at Regents Park. Your on going support, both financial & court side, is greatly appreciated. Last week we played Mornington in the final games of the rounds & we came up with a mixed bag of results. Two wins, a draw & a loss! The Doggies are definitely unlucky not to be playing this week & are are set to be a force to be reckoned with next year! This weekend is a great time to be an Eagle, with our Seniors, U19’s & netballers vying to play in the Big Show. Good luck to all our players & coaches! Here’s to our loyal Eagle supporters who will be there cheering on our teams & see you at the Frankston International on Sunday Soar Eagles!

The final round of the home and away season saw us travel to Toorak College to take on the Redlegs, and yes to our delight, were we indoors! The day saw mixed results. Our D girls, who are our only finals contender, unfortunately had a ‘shocker’ and therefore they are determined to redeem themselves in Sundays semi final. So lookout Redlegs! Our C girls saw their courageous captain Leah reach a milestone of shooting 400 goals, an amazing effort in a season. We also came away with a exciting win, leading by only 2 goals at the final whistle. B grade played with the fight and gusto that they have played with all season. Unfortunately the girls went down but can still hold their heads high after a hard fought season. A grade was an intense battle, claws were out as bi-laws were recited but once the game the commenced, skills were on show. We lost the match but earned the respect we deserved! Our Roo girls now will support and encourage our D graders in their finals campaign and hope they can bring home a flag! This season was about regrouping and rebuilding our precious club, and we have done so much in only one season. Next year we will be stronger, more united and even more competitive than ever before!! Bring it on! Go Roos!

Netball Notes Mt Eliza Red Legs

Last week we took on Langwarrin at home for the final game of the season - our D grade girls needed to win to make finals, C & B grade were already safe and our A grade side also needed to win to lock in their spot. What a day it was, all teams showed amazing character in the way they went about it, all teams apart from C grade walked away with the 4 points which was a really positive outcome. What’s even more exciting is that ALL FOUR TEAMS have made finals for the first time in history. Over the past 2 years we have had 2 goals; in 2016 we aimed to strengthen our C/D squad which we did & in 2017 it was about all teams making finals - positively we have ticked both boxes. This season D GRADE has gone from strength to strength, finishing with 12 wins & 4th on the ladder, we meet Langy in the first final. The whole team has contributed this season & they really deserve their spot. C GRADE have been a real surprise package, they are a diverse team & have managed 12 wins & finished 3rd, they meet Edi-asp in their first final & expect to put on a strong performance only just falling short in both games last time we met. B GRADE finished 4th on 12 wins & have been building as the season has progressed. We meet Edi-asp in the semi, we look to continue our winning form. A GRADE has been admirable & are clicking at the right time, finishing with 10 wins & 4th on the ladder they meet Seaford this week with a close match last time, this is one to watch. Seaford Tigers FINALS FEVER!! You could of blinked and missed the whole season. This year has flown by and what a fun ride it has been. Although our d, c and b grade sides didn’t finish in a top 4 spot, with the way they played on Saturday you would not of know the difference. D grade had a tight match with scores even with 2 seconds to go but unfortunately some crafty play by the sharks stole victory in the jaws of defeat/a draw with a goal right on the siren. C grade and B grade were hungrier than ever to make sure they finished the year on a good note. And they did just that both clocking 20 + goal victories. An amazing team effort with no one particular playing standing out rather just a solid performance as a whole unit. A grade got off to a very slow start with Bonny getting and early 4 - 0 lead. The girls kept their cool and managed to pull away in the second half of the game for a 20+ goal win. The shaky start gave the girls a reality check but also filled them with confidence that they are capable of pulling themselves out of a sticky situation Our a graders had a cracker season - the best ever on Seaford record. With all finals hopes resting on their shoulders we know if there was team in Seaf history its this bunch of legends who week in week out encapsulate what it is to be an amazing team. GO TIGES!!

Frankston YCW StoneKittens

Chelsea certainly gave us a run for our money last week and while we managed to come home with the win it was by the smallest of margins! Chelsea definitely came to play and for the most part of the game we did not. Having said that we had some real positives and proved to ourselves that as a team we can pick ourselves up and turn the game around. BOC goes to Kirsty for a ripper game in defence. The C Grade girls hit the court with intent knowing what was required to take the win. Although very static at times and some miscommunication on where to place the ball, we converted well and provided options when needed. The team pulled together to secure the win 4622. BOC goes to Tyler for her consistency and ‘never say die’ attitude. D grade girls had an absolutely smashing game with a 27 goal win in torrential conditions! An outstanding game by every single girl with an abundance of tips and intercepts. The girls were all so supportive and positive on the court which will be crucial as a team coming into finals. BOC goes to Grace - her movements inside the ring where exceptional not to mention her amazing accuracy at goal. Our B, C and D girls have all finished the season in second position on the ladder and looking forward to giving a good crack next week in the Semi Finals. Unfortunately our A grade girls season is over but a massive thank you to the girls who have come down to training to assist with our preparation for finals. Go kittens!!

DRAWN FINALS NO FINALS WILL BE REPLAYED, IN CASE OF A DRAW IN ANY FINALS GAMES, EXTRA TIME WILL BE PLAYED. In the event of scores being level at the elapsed time, the timekeepers are instructed to sound the siren. The field umpire shall then: •

Direct the goal umpires to consult with each other as to the correct score. Teams are required to stay on the ground until goal umpires confirm scores correct.

•

On receiving confirmation that the scores are level instruct both captains that the match shall re-commence with the teams kicking to the same end as in the final quarter and that two five minute periods (with time on) shall be played with teams exchanging ends after the first five minute period immediately after the siren sounds.

•

Consult both captains as to their readiness to recommence the match.

•

Hold the ball aloft to indicate to timekeepers that the match is about to recommence.

•

The Timekeeper shall then sound the siren and the match will recommence.

•

In the event of scores being level after two five minute periods, a further two five minute periods (with time on) shall be played with clubs exchanging ends after the first five minute period.

This process shall continue until there is a result. Coaches are not permitted to address players at any stage after the three-quarter time interval.
