MPNFL Updates MPNFL Update Finals Week 2 2017 Welcome to the 2017 Finals Series. What a first week we had for finals, while mother nature may have not been on our side, it still produced to some interesting results for both football and netball. Well done to all sides who were victorious on the weekend and will continue the dream of winning the premiership, and commiserations to all sides that weren’t as successful on the weekend, to those that have a second chance we hope that you are able to capitalise on it, and to those that the curtain has closed on 2017, we hope you can go that one step further in 2018. The Frankston City community is very passionate about sports and particularly football, which has been displayed in the outstanding show of support in successfully getting the Frankston Dolphins Football Club back into the VFL. We’re very excited to see the club reinstated into the VFL and look forward to cheering them on in the 2018 VFL season. AFL Vic Country HERALD SUN SHIELD HEATS UP The 2017 Herald Sun Shield school football competition is heating up, following a host of competitive Grand Final matches this month. Expanding the senior student program to include two male and female intermediate competitions this season, the annual Herald Sun Shield event has seen the best Victorian secondary school footballers go head to head in venues across the state for the coveted title. In the Division 1 Senior Boys Grand Final, St Bernard’s College Essendon broke through to win their third Herald Sun Shield title after defeating St Patrick’s College Ballarat by 16 points at Simonds Stadium. In wet and windy conditions, there was only one point in it at three-quarter time in a low-scoring affair before two final-quarter goals from St Bernard’s captain and Calder Cannons player Jake Riccardi put the game beyond doubt. The final score was 6.9 (45) to 4.5 (29). The win secured a third Herald Sun Shield for St Bernard’s, and their first triumph in the Grand Final since 2003 to also go alongside their 1991 victory.

In the Division 2 Senior competitions, Hallam Secondary College claimed the Senior Girls flag after defeating Loyola College by 73 points at RAMS Arena, while the Senior Boys Grand Final will be held on September 14. In other results, four schools have etched their name in the history books after claiming the inaugural Herald Sun Shield Intermediate premierships. Played as a triple header at Victoria Park it was Ballarat’s Loreto College who took home the silverware in the Division 1 Girls Intermediate competition after a comprehensive win over Bentleigh. Padua College secured the inaugural Division 2 Intermediate Girls title with a solid victory over Mt Lilydale, Werribee’s MacKillop College got the job done over a spirited Kardinia outfit in the Division 2 Boys, while Xavier College claimed a close victory over St Joseph’s to win the Division 1 Boys flag. It was a different story for Ballarat in the Division 1 Senior Girls Grand Final, with Ballarat Grammar securing backto-back titles after a solid 23-point win over Melbourne Girls Grammar at the MCG. Played as a curtain-raiser to the Round 19 AFL clash between Adelaide and Collingwood, Ballarat jumped out of the blocks early to establish a 15-point lead at the main break. Despite a spirited third term from Melbourne Girls Grammar, Ballarat’s defensive pressure halted the attack to help them run home as premiers. The final score was 4.8 (32) to 1.3 (9).

Football Preview D-DAY FOR THE SHARKS by Simon McEvoy

BONBEACH coach Steve Hughes says there’s only one option for his side today. “We’ve just got to respond,” he said. The Sharks put in a substandard performance in week one of the finals last week and were brushed aside by Edi-Asp. It means D-day has come quickly for Bonny. A straight sets exit from the finals hangs over their head when they meet PINES in the first semi-final. And just to make the task even more testing, Bonbeach must snap a three-year hoodoo against Pines. Bonny hasn’t been able to beat Pines since 2014. “We’ve just got to get it right this week,” Hughes said. “I’ve still got a pretty firm belief that we’re a very good footy side. We’re probably the underdog now which is fine by me. We haven’t beaten Pines in three years so it would be nice to beat them in the sudden death one. “I’ve never coached a win against Pines, so it would be nice…I think this one is probably more important the other seven (games). “We just want to have a dip this week.” Pines come into this game in good shape. The Pythons relished the finals atmosphere to trounce Mt Eliza in the elimination final last week. The Pythons’ engine room was operating on all cylinders, led by Paul Scanlon, Luke Potts, Nick Boswell, Brad Kiely. Pines also appears to be relishing the hard and fast deck at Chelsea. They won there by 60 points in Round 17 and by 85 last week. Pines coach Paddy Swayn says his side is in good shape. The Pythons have kicked 18, 13 and 15 goals in their past three outings. “We’re hitting a bit of form and we’re scoring again, that’s the big key,” he said. On Sunday, the Winx of Peninsula football steps out for its first run of the spring carnival (the finals). The mighty Stonecats, FRANKSTON YCW, begins its September chase for a fourth successive premiership. YCW will face a red-hot EDITHVALE-ASPENDALE in the second semi-final, with a ticket to the grand final on offer. As in racing, there are no certainties in footy and the Eagles will be out to cause a boilover. Well rested after a week off, the Stonecats should be turbo-charged when they take to the ground, and they might need to be.

Edi-Asp, with 12 wins in its past 13 outings, is low flying and will take some stopping. Coach Graeme Yeats says his determined and well balanced side is ready for the challenge. “We expect a really tough, ferocious game,’’ he said. “That’s what we have prepared for. There are no excuses for us, we know what has to get done every week. As the stakes get higher we know we’ve got to lift our performance every week.” There were no weak links in the Edi-Asp side as they swept past Bonbeach last week. The experience of Matt Clark, Tim Mannix and Steve Mannix was crucial, while Michael Bussey, Charlie Martello and Nick Carlon have become crucial cogs in the Eagles machine. STONECATS HIT PEAK FORM IN THE RESERVES... BONBEACH will try to bounce back from a disappointing performance last week when it tackles FRANKSTON YCW in a do-or-die first semi-final. Expect the Sharks to come out firing after a flat effort last week when they managed only one goal and lost to Seaford. Bonbeach had won 10 in a row coming into the finals and it would be a shock to see them exit in straight sets. Frankston YCW looked strong and well drilled last week, beating Pines, and the Stonecats appear to be hitting form at the right time. On Sunday, a grand final berth awaits either MT ELIZA or SEAFORD. The Redlegs know what it takes to get the job done – they are chasing a fourth successive flag – and come into this in top form. Their past three games have yielded wins by 119, 157 and 89 points. Seaford, though, will did beat Mt Eliza a month ago and the Tigers looked slick and sure in the opening week of finals, with Liam Davenport, Kayle Henderson and Peter McCall leading the way.

Football Preview EAGLES FLYING HIGH IN THE UNDER 19s… EDI-ASP produced one of its best displays of the season in last week’s elimination final, firing off six goals in the third quarter to swamp Mornington. Now the Eagles go into the first semi-final with newfound confidence. They face LANGWARRIN, which needs to lift after kicking just two goals in last week’s qualifying final. The Kangaroos and Edi-Asp have had two stirring battles this year, with the scoreboard all square. On Sunday, MT ELIZA has been unstoppable in recent months and will be confident against FRANKSTON YCW. The Redlegs have won 13 on end and appear to be rushing towards a grand final berth. But the Stonecats, after an impressive win last week, are capable of going all the way.

Club Notes Pines Pythons

It was great to be able to focus on football for the day. Chelsea hosted a great day and should be congratulated on the conditions and services. Reserves pinched defeat from the jaws of victory and while it’s hard when you lose, there is a core that we have identified that will be part of the continual rebuild. A lot of these kids have gone from not winning a game to expecting to win. What a turnaround in such a short time. Congratulations to Corny and the crew on a good year. Special mention to Liam Jackson who is recovering from a fractured skull and shoulder from an unfortunate head clash. Also well done to the young YCW player who react with great compassion in placing the player on his side until trainers attended. It was the third serious incident this year so hopefully we can put the stretcher away for the remainder. The seniors played the game on their terms from the beginning and it was an unforeseen turnaround from our hit out this time last year. Congratulations to Mt Eliza who endured a pretty tough year of incidents themselves, and we now move onto the next challenge. We are well prepared and have no injuries other than those season end ones that have been documented. All the best for those that want to see us win, for everyone else we hope there is no serious injuries and the game is a great contest. Frankston YCW Stonecats The finals campaigns commenced last weekend for 5 of the 6 Stonecats/kittens teams. The Reserves kicked things off against Pines in a tight contest with the boys putting their nose in front at the line and the right to challenge Bonbeach this week. Sammy P, Chev, Wags and Chappy (3 goals) were best. A special shout out to Marco Kelsall showing great sportsmanship to provide medical assistance to a young Pines player in distress. Well done Marco. The club is proud of you. The Unders against Langy jumped out of the blocks like Ben Johnson on steroids in a 100m Olympic Final kicking 6 goals to zip and were never headed from there. Hughesy, Viney, Kelly and Gus amongst the best. The Unders now face Mt Eliza for direct entry into the GF. The Kittens fought valiantly in their finals and have the chance this Sunday to make the big dance (see Netball notes). This weekend sees the Seniors start their finals campaign against an in form Edi Asp team in what should be a cracking game. Best of luck to Cappy and the boys! Don’t forget Big Bash #2 at the club on Saturday 23rd September with Sam Kekovich, the Nelson Twins and Rohan Gazzard (MC) as special guest. Bonbeach Sharks

A disappointing week 1 of finals for both Senior and Reserves sides. All games played in tough conditions the boys simply didn’t cope with the challenges of wet weather football. Both sides are better than that and the double chance provides the opportunity to bounce back in a big way. The club heads to Chelsea on Saturday in two do or die finals. A packed house enjoyed the clubs Business Lunch last Friday. This event just keeps getting bigger and this year’s line-up didn’t disappoint. Dermie pulled no punches and Lawrence Mooney had the room rumbling. Another one to remember we already look forward to next year. The clubs presentation night date has been locked away. Langwarrin Kangaroos On a soggy , wet ground last Saturday our Under 19’s started slowly , against a highly competitive and skilled YCW. Playing a brand of footy that suited the conditions and with accurate kicking , YCW jumped us early, which saw us playing catch up footy for the rest of the game. Our rhythm returned at times during the game, and it was important that we battled on and refused to drop our heads at any point. Having worked and trained hard as a group all year hard , we now have the chance again to show our true colors as we take on Edi - Aspendale at Chelsea oval in this weeks Semi Final. Boys let’s remember the brand of footy that has got us here today. Lets take it right up to Edi-Asp and come away with a win! Go Langy !!!!

Mt Eliza Red Legs Not a great result for the Seniors last Saturday at Chelsea. Pines jumped us early and were far too strong all afternoon, thoroughly deserving their win. Best players were hard to find, although Tenno was a standout and Lambie, Heasa and Gorms were gallant. Today the Under 19’s take on YCW for a place in the Grand Final and the Reserves take on Seaford. Good luck to Bratts, Kenty and all players. Congratulations to the MEJFC who have 7 sides in Grand Finals today, having already tasted success with the Under 17’s win last Sunday v Beaconsfield. Best of luck to SJFC Cubs for making the GF today! Great result with 4 sides making the big dance. U12 girls U13 gold boys U14 blue boys U18 girls (going for 4 peat) Well ground conditions certainly set the day for a scrappy physical contest! Shorty Walks, Liam Dav & Mark Di Blaz were licking their lips when they were watching pre game. The pressure was relentless from the get go but our willingness to commit to every contest proved the difference in the end. As well experience forward duo of Joey Hallal, Dazz Chad & Matty Andrews using their smarts to set up and hurt the scoreboard when limited opportunities came fwd proved the difference. A grade girls took on the Redlegs in their elimin final. But the believe the girls have showed all season came to fore to settle before HT and again during the last to run out winners by 6! To think we have 4 girls from our 2016 B Grade side playing in the A’s it shows what a TEAM they are. How/Why Tayla isn’t recognised for the job she has done at league awards is disappointing. Fantastic effort from Reserves Rettes side to make their way through to the Prelim Final today against St Kilda Sharks after a cracking 2pt win. The last 5mins the backline stood tall & did the job to get the girls over the line. Congrats to Coach Bump! This is her 4th consect Prelim. GO TIGES

The sun seems to have an added glow about it. And any sign of cloud coverage, let alone torrential rain, has disappeared in the blink of an eye. Somehow, someway it always happens like that. No matter how extreme the winter is everything comes together the minute that finals feeling rolls around. You gave your promise to me, and I gave mine to you…I need someone beside me…in everything I do…oh yes I do But with that comes the beauty of the football itself. There’s nothing quite like finals footy. That thing you spend all year working so hard towards. And for some it’s not just the past year. Sometimes it’s the culmination of many years of hard slog at the lower end of the pecking order. You know I love you…I always will…My mind’s made up by the way that I feel…There’s no beginning…There’ll be no end…cause on my love you can depend... The Future Is Here… The future can look like many things depending on which way it’s assessed. The future can be nerving, exciting, undefined and downright scary all at the same time. That’s a serious emotional wave there. Regularly we consider the future to be exactly there…in the future. Something that we think about but never really consider approaching. Yet the future isn’t just where we think it to be. It’s actually here. Right here, right now. The next word of this article that you read is actually in the future from the word you’re reading now. All of a sudden those nerving, exciting, scary feelings that the future causes are on top of you. That’s right…the future is here…the future is now. And that’s exactly what presents the SUA and the whole footballing community on the Peninsula this weekend.

The young stars of the future will strut their stuff this weekend in an exciting finale of games down at Hastings on Sunday. This season has been an absolute blast in the juniors with many new and enthusiastic faces taking up the challenge of learning and developing their whistle blowing and decision making in MPJFL footy. And credit must go to their application as many have also made the step into the senior ranks. With the changing of the guard in the senior ranks the sniffs of opportunity were too hard to ignore. However, the enthusiasm surrounding the SUA junior program would not be possible with the unwavering commitment from second year Junior Coordinator Scott Gathercole and the Rye Football Club. Scott came in with experience in coaching Auskick down the Peninsula and his ability to get the best out of our young future stars has been evident. The relationship developed with the Rye Football Club has enabled the SUA to set up a junior base at Rye to further expand our demographic. And while we regularly get caught up in the competitive wave of footy it is always nice to step back and see the lighter more sentimental side. Season 2016 has seen 3 fatherson combinations take the whistle and no doubt it won’t be long until young son is teaching dad a few little tricks to keep his aging body ticking along. So get down to Hastings this Sunday and catch a glimpse of the next wave of whistle blowing stars and Scotty and his team close the curtains and celebrate a wonderful 2017 junior season. Stingrays Top Notch Stingrays secure third, slaying Dragons. A full team effort lead superbly by Hunter Clark inspired the Stingrays who will enter the finals in third position in a bid to snap an agonising 25-year premiership drought for the Dandenong boys. Clark, whose rise in the past few months has been eye catching collected 29 disposals (13 contested) and seven inside-50s kicking two goals in his latest best-on-ground display. He’s effortlessly has shifted roles from a gliding half back blank, to a tough inside midfield who seems to really love the contested and combative change. Clark’s capped crusader partner in crime Luke DaviesUniacke (LDU) played a perfect support role with 21 disposals, with 11 handball receives (15 uncontested) and 1 goal. LDU continued to show the footy world his silky skills and cat like movements with speed can never be contained for too long. He battled the day out going head to head with fellow school companion Charlie Constable, taking the honours on the day. Craig Black’s Stingrays were ravenous early on Saturday morning adapting to the tricky windy conditions and breaking away in the second term to gain the early scoreboard pressure advantage, before a blistering Dragons onslaught in the third term saw the game evenly poised going into the final quarter. A loss would have dropped the Stingrays to sixth, but the 11.15 (81) to 10.12 (72) triumph over the Dragons at the Trevor Barker Reserve instead locked up third spot where they will face another mighty hurdle when they face the Eastern Rangers in two weeks’ time. “I’m really proud. It was a tough game against the Dragons, who were aiming to snatch third spot for the finals,” Stingrays coach Craig Black said. “It was always going to be a tough game which was always going to go down to the final few kicks, and I thought the boys handled themselves really well. We started well, which was pleasing. “We’ve still got some areas of our game that are a little bit frustrating at times, but some of that was due to the Dragons’ good play as well.” Black finished by saying, “In the past, we would have earned the double chance, but under the new structure all TAC Cup final games this year are all knock out games, so we’ve treated round 17 and 18 like mini finals as the teams we’re facing are top four teams.” The day didn’t go all the Stingrays way with Sandringham six-goal-to-two third quarter had cut the Stingrays’ lead to 4 points at the last break, after it had reached 29 at the long break. Dandenong’s pressure was immense in the opening stages, repeatedly forcing the rattled Dragons sideways and backwards. It mattered little that Sandringham had many more disposals, including the contested variety. Both sides found the wind tricky, with many wasted shots on goal saw a low score line of 2.5 to 1.4 in favour of the Stingrays at the end of the first quarter.

The ¼ break came at the right time for the Stingrays with the coach’s working hard on some structural tweaks and reinforce the style of play needed to slay the dragons. After trading a few points each, Luke Davies-Uniacke stamped his brilliance upon the game splitting the middle after some strong contested work higher up the ground, which opened the floodgates for the Stingrays who kicked the next 3 goals in a five minute dominance of the Dragons (through Bailey Williams, Riley Bowman and Aiden Bonar) before the Dragons clamped down to stop the onslaught. More goals came over the middle part of the quarter through Clark and Jai Nanscawen before two late goals in the final part of the quarter to the Dragons gave them a little bit of hope as they margin ballooned out to 56-27 at the long break. The third saw the completed opposite with the Dragons going on the rampage kicking the first four goals, with the first coming in the first 30 seconds of the game. Mitch Riordan took the game on and kicked truly to steady the ship before another two goals in a row to the Dragons saw them take the lead for the first time before and late settler to Nanscawen to see the Stingrays hold a four-point lead at the final break (69-65) The last quarter was a tough and pressure from both sides unrelenting and when the Stingrays needed their better players to stand up and they did. Bailey Morrish and Mason deWit took it upon themselves to stand and deliver, with Hunter Clark delivering the final blow kicking a front and centre goal to extend the margin to 13 points at the 8-minute mark. The Dragons struck back a few minutes later to get back within 7 points but after both defences became stingy with Stingrays Dual Captains Oscar Clavarino and Joshua Bateman leading superbly, flawlessly supported by Tom Freeman, William Hamill and the ever-steadfast Jesse Davies repealed entry after entry denying the Dragons. The siren sounded with a pumped Stingrays outfit lifting the roof off the change rooms with the Stingrays song, before retreating the Sandy beach for rehab for readiness for round 18. A Grade Edi Asp V Seaford The reigning premiers take on the Tigers this week. Winning all but one grade final in A grade, the Eagles are unlikely to allow Seaford an opportunity to snatch this game from them. Seaford have injected talent into their squad this season while the Eagles retain stars from previous years. Last weeks loss to Karingal will not go down well but the Tigers are on a winning streak & will be looking to make their first A grade grand final.

B Grade

Uncharacteristically the Eagles finished third on the C grade ladder this season while the Stonekittens finished second to the Bulls. The Eagles had a convincing win last week against Mt Eliza & seem to have found form when it counts, finals time.

D Grade Frankston YCW V Langwarrin Langwarrin haven’t made it further than a preliminary final in Peninsula netball so far but will be looking to take the win this Sunday & see their first grand final. Frankston YCW won’t let it happen easily though after finishing second on the ladder. This will be a tight game & one to watch.

Frankston YCW V Edi Asp In a re-match of last years grand final - the Stonekittens are looking to defend their title while the Eagles are out for redemption. YC suffered a heavy loss last week to ladder leaders Karingal & will need to re-group & find some form if they are to defeat Edi Asp.

Last week we celebrated B grade Captain, Katie Schneiders 100th game however unfortunately couldn’t get a win that she so greatly deserved! All year we have been dominating the court as a team but last week we played a bit more of an individual game and didn’t always control the controllable. Saying that we did have just as much, if not more of the ball than Karingal girls but we didn’t manage to capitalise. We will now focus our attention to next week and make the most of the second chance we’ve worked so hard for. The C girls hit the court with anticipation in the hope of making it a straight run into the finals however it wasn’t to be with Karingal coming out on top. We work hard for the ball and our defensive effort was sold but unfortunately when we got it to the ring we weren’t always able to convert whereas Karingal did. BOC goes to Maxine for a stellar performance. D grade girls had a loss to be proud of. Edi Asp is a well oiled rig and we had a definitely had them scared for a little while there, but eventually went down by 7 goals. BOC goes to Paige for her pressure down the court and shutting her player down. While none of the teams had success last week our hard work and effort throughout the year means we get another chance this week. Thank you to all our supporters who have supported us all year on the sideline - your support will be pivotal to our success this week and we hope to see you all there on Sunday!

FINALS FEVER!! Sunday we knew it was make or break. Before the game the girls seemed to be the keeping South East Water in business with an average of 5 nervy toilet trips each. But once they stepped on that court the nerves were channelled into positive energy. Ash & Nich through down absolute fire in the goal circle leaving their defenders scratching their head. Unfortunately it was short lived with Ash going down early in the second to yet another ankle injury to curse our team. With some rushed changes the girls began to settle and got a small jump of the red legs. Jenna dropped it like it was hot in WD and applied enormous amount of pressure on her WA. In the final quarter we were down by a goal at one stage but we were not going down on Claire & Hoskos watch. Claire came through with the goods providing 2 amazing flying intercepts at crucial times and Hosko thought she had her Carlton jumper on, gritted her teeth and went in hard for some ballsy turnovers which we were able to capatalise on and come home with a nice 6 goal win! Big thanks to all of our supporters who came down to cheer us on at the big dance - especially those who sacrificed watching the big the big fight. Also thanks to Tahir for coming down and taking some snaps of the game. My phone hasn’t stopped ringing with offers of modelling contracts. Girls - its amazing how much we have grown as a team. It we bring our a game and play a disciplined and composed game we have the ability to take it all the way. GO TIGES!

Karingal Bullettes What an excellent start to our finals campaign last week with all three teams competing heading straight through to the grand final. C grade had the tightest contest of the day coming away with a three goal win. They led the entire game in trying conditions which included hail! A great effort to keep their composure! B grade had the best win of the day! Bridge was best on in centre & created drive effortlessly (probably not effortlessly but certainly looked like it from the sideline!) Despite tough defence, Em & Nadine were sensational in goals. A great victory by a margin of 14 goals! A grade met Edi Asp in the final match of the day & completed a clean sweep. Court combined with Jamie in the mid court & cut them to shreds with pace & class! Jayde, Mards & Georgia picked off intercepts left, right & centre while Sammy Sara’s favourite - stood out in the goal right, didn’t work up a sweat & shot like a boss. A 9 goal win - great effort by all. A well deserved week off before the big dance. #GOBULLS #REDWHITEBOOM

Semi final time and our girls were ready to rock! After playing a disappointing game the previous week against Mt Eliza, our D graders were out for redemption and they were pumped! From the very first whistle the girls took control of the match, never letting the Redlegs to settle into their natural game. Precision goaling by Lisa and Nat, under extremely tough weather conditions added to a truly solid team performance. Maddy and Hollie worked tirelessly in defence to startle their opposition and it worked a treat, and defensive pressure from our mid counters was nothing but quality, turning over an abundance of balls that led to conversion. Our girls showed what it meant to them to play as a team and their execution was absolutely brilliant. They believed in their coach, in their captain and in themselves. We now bring that belief to this weeks Pre-Lim against YCW, a match that is our for the taking, and with our confidence and belief running high, we know we will be hard to beat. DRAWN FINALS NO FINALS WILL BE REPLAYED, IN CASE OF A DRAW IN ANY FINALS GAMES, EXTRA TIME WILL BE PLAYED. In the event of scores being level at the elapsed time, the timekeepers are instructed to sound the siren. The field umpire shall then: •

Direct the goal umpires to consult with each other as to the correct score. Teams are required to stay on the ground until goal umpires confirm scores correct.

•

On receiving confirmation that the scores are level instruct both captains that the match shall re-commence with the teams kicking to the same end as in the final quarter and that two five minute periods (with time on) shall be played with teams exchanging ends after the first five minute period immediately after the siren sounds.

•

Consult both captains as to their readiness to recommence the match.

•

Hold the ball aloft to indicate to timekeepers that the match is about to recommence.

•

The Timekeeper shall then sound the siren and the match will recommence.

•

In the event of scores being level after two five minute periods, a further two five minute periods (with time on) shall be played with clubs exchanging ends after the first five minute period.

This process shall continue until there is a result. Coaches are not permitted to address players at any stage after the three-quarter time interval.
