Football Preview EAGLES AND SHARKS SET FOR BATTLE By Simon McEvoy

EDITHVALE-ASPENDALE outplayed BONBEACH a fortnight ago to take a big, confident step towards their ultimate aim, a flag. The Eagles’ belief soared after that resounding 37-point win in the qualifying final. But a stumble last week sees them return to Frankston Park for a third straight Sunday and another duel with Bonbeach. Only this time, the stakes are higher - the winner can prepare for a grand final, and all the excitement that goes with it, while it’s season over for the loser. Tough, contested footy was the cornerstone of EdiAsp’s win over Bonbeach two weeks ago. The Eagles put the squeeze on the Sharks. For Bonbeach, though, the loss may have been a blessing in disguise. It allowed them to refocus, steel themselves and come through the first semi-final, in which they got their running game going to beat Pines. Importantly, Bonny’s brilliant playmaker Shane McDonald found top form, slotting four goals, and underrated forward Owen Hulett looked dangerous. Edi-Asp weren’t able to beat Frankston YCW last week but they got close. Captain Steve Mannix knows what it takes to win finals and you can bet he’ll be leading from the front today. The ruck duel between Dylan Jones and Chris Wylie will be pivotal, while Bonny forward Trent DennisLane will play a key role, as will Edi-Asp’s playmakers Matt Clark and Tim Mannix. With a ticket to the big dance – and a crack at Frankston YCW - up for grabs, the Eagles and Sharks will be desperate to prevail. WHAT THE COACHES THINK Seaford coach Ben Murphy: Edi-Asp. “I think they will be too clean and quick for Bonbeach. Would have taken a lot of confidence out of last time they played Langwarrin coach Brad Dredge: Edi-Asp. “Hmmm, tough game to tip with big sides coming off two weeks of physical finals football. Edi-Asp in a very tight tough contest due to a slightly deeper mid field with a few bigger bodies.’’ Ex-Chelsea coach Brett Dunne: Edi-Asp. “Edithvale are in form and play for each other in a real contested and outnumber style. Bonbeach got their outside game going last week, (Owen) Hulett and McDonald were good targets and finished well. The ruck contest

8

will be vital, first hands and first use important. If Bonbeach can get their inside 50 count up and make them clean entries they win. If Edithvale get the game on their terms and win the contested ball they are hard to stop or deny. Edithvale by 12 points. Mt Eliza coach Troy Shannon: Edi-Asp. “Edithvale for mine. Bonbeach have been consistent all year, however, ya gotta love the recent form of the Eagles. Nothing like momentum at this time of year.’’ Ex-Mornington coach Chris Holcombe: Edi-Asp. “…In a tight one. In better form at this stage of the year is the only way I can separate them.’’ STONECATS ROCKET IN THE RESERVES… Peaking at the right time of the season, FRANKSTON YCW is dreaming big after rocketing into a preliminary final. But the Stonecats must clear a big hurdle to make the grand final – a classy SEAFORD outfit. The Tigers have been one of the best performed sides all season and will go all out to keep their flag quest alive. YCW’s in-form key playmakers Zinzile Mosimane, Ben Wagner, Jacob Cheverly and Sam Pickess will have a big say in the outcome. Peter McCall, Liam Davenport, Brendan Dawes and league medal winner Joey Hallal have been in good form for the Tigers and will play key roles today.

Football Preview EAGLES AIM HIGH IN THE UNDER 19s… Full of spirit, EDI-ASP will be out to continue their fairytale finals run against MT ELIZA. The Eagles have dug deep to win the elimination final and then the first semi-final. Their two-point win last week was a beauty with Campbell Ak, James Hickey and Tyler Brodie showing the way. Mt Eliza, regarded by many as the flag favourites before their second semi-final loss last week, will look to put their flag quest back on track. That loss ended a 13-game winning streak and you can bet the Redlegs will go into today’s game breathing fire. Look for Callan Rice, Max Rea and Kurt Thiele to play well.

Club Notes Frankston YCW Stonecats

Last weekend saw all 6 Stonecats/kittens teams in finals action. The Reserves kicked off proceedings in a cut throat game against Bonbeach. Heading into the last and facing a 9 point deficit the boys came home with a wet sail to storm home and book a spot in the Prelim against Seaford. Best were Zinzi, Wags, Sammy P and Chev. On Super Sunday in a low scoring grind the Unders got down and dirty throwing everything including the kitchen sink at Mt Eliza to score an inspiring win and direct entry to the GF. Hughesy (minus a few pegs), Crackers, Dylan and Baily W were awesome. The Seniors faced arguably the inform side of the competition in Edi Asp in wet and windy conditions. Edi kicked the first of the game into the breeze before we kicked into gear led by Tony, Byza and Ryan to finish three goals up at the change. The next two quarters was an arm wrestle with the margin holding in our favour by a couple of goals. With the game on a knife edge a goal on the siren to Bruhny provided a good lead to defend in the last. Despite failing to kick a goal in the last we held Edi to only 1 goal to salute in the end by 17 points and book a spot in the GF. The three Stonekittens teams rounded off the weekend with Prelim final wins at FDNA. All the best to the B, C and D Grade teams in their Grand Finals. Don’t forget the Big Bash 2 at the clubrooms on Saturday 23rd September featuring Sam Kekovich and the Nelson Twins. See Reddars or Gerard for tickets and a chance to win $1,000.

Bonbeach Sharks

What great Bonbeach support last week at Chelsea which witnessed a nail-biting win over Pines! The seniors overcame 7 consecutive losses against the Pythons to book a place in the preliminary final. A great time to get the monkey off the back. The task doesn’t get much easier coming into today against Edi-Asp. The Sharks were disappointed with the effort and result a fortnight ago. The time is now to show the response and get the result. Commiserations to the reserves who went down fighting against Frankston YCW last week. The 2s had a great season in 2017, beating every side, with a 10 game winning streak being the highlight. They have been well led by Bully, who has announced he will be stepping down as coach. Josh has coached the Bonbeach Reserves for the past 3 years taking them to the grand final in 2016 as well as the finals this year. Josh will continue on in 2018 as a Bonbeach player. From everyone at BFNC we say thank you Josh! Be loud today Shark supporters. A Grand Final spot is there to take!

Club Notes Mt Eliza Red Legs

Firstly we congratulate Zane Hill on winning the U/19 League B & F Award during the week. Congrats also to Olivia Allen on her D Grade Netball B & F win. Fantastic achievements from both of you. Well done also to Shane Tennant who was selected in the Peninsula League Team of the Year. To last Sunday and in terrible conditions in the morning the Under 19’s went down to YCW by 2 goals. In a low scoring affair we dominated early and led 1.9 to nil at 1/4 time, but failed to hit the scoreboard with another goal until the final moments of the game. Best Players were Ricey, Max Rea, Kurt Thiele, Loges and Jacko. We have a chance to redeem ourselves this morning as we take on Edi-Asp. Good luck to Steve and the boys – The Club is right behind you! The Reserves took on Seaford in bright sunshine. Kicking against the breeze in the first we kept the opposition to 2 goals and were a point behind at the main break. Goals to McKinnon & Tim Strickland early in the 3rd saw us lead by 11 before they kicked the next couple. We went into the final change up by 7. When Wetters snapped brilliantly from the boundary and McKinnon crumbed another we had the game in hand. Nugget put us up by 29 with another to seal a great win and go straight into next weeks GF. In a very even team performance, better players were Sammy Howell, Aaron McIlroy, Josh Curren , Nick McKinnon & Buzz Mace. Congratulations to the MEJFC who won 4 Flags last Sunday. A brilliant effort having 16 of 22 teams making the Finals. Social: Presentation Night – Friday Oct 13th at the Club. Redleg.

Edi-Asp Eagles Our great sponsor ACTION PEST CONTROL bring you the club notes this week. Jaime has 35 years experience and extensive professional knowledge of the Pest & Weed industry. Action Pest and Weed Control Pty Ltd is a Licensed and Insured Company, we firmly believe in delivering the highest quality service at all times. http://www.actionpestcontrol.com.au/ The second semi was a tough and bruising encounter and we took it right up to YCW but just couldn’t get the score on the board in the last quarter. With another chance this week the boys are ready to get the win and take on YCW again. Best players on the day were S. Mannix, M. Clark, M. Bussey, T. Mannix, T. Woodbridge, B. Neville. In a thriller the U/19 boys held on to knock Langwarrin out of the finals race and advance to the preliminary this week. In windy conditions we held them out and get to take on the mounties this week. Best players were C. Ak, J. Hickey, T. Brodie, C. Neale, Z. Barrett, R. Love-Linay. Our netballers also are in the spotlight as the D & A grade girls play their Grand Finals.Unfortunately C & B were beaten in their games and have had great seasons. Get to a game this weekend and support the teams playing as we strive for premiership glory. Grand Finals 2017

Karingal V Frankston YCW

A Grade Edi Asp V Karingal Edi Asp took the win over Seaford last week to progress into the grand final against the Bulls. During the season, the Bulls have won one and lost one to the Eagles. They have also lost the last two grand final’s at the hands of the Eagles. Coach Ben Black will be looking to redeem that and he has the talent to do it. Edi are no strangers to grand finals and have the capacity to perform under pressure. This game will be a tight one and an excellent display!

B Grade Karingal V Frankston YCW With one win each this season – Karingal took the win in the first final by ten goals. They will be looking to repeat that performance in the big dance today. Karingal’s mid court looked superior while their

YC had a very close game against Edi last Saturday winning by three goals. They progress into the grand final and take on the Bulls. During the season YC took the points the first time they met while the Bulls took the next two wins, including the first final. Their encounters have always been close so expect this game to be no different!

D Grade Edi Asp V Frankston YCW Frankston YCW ran away in the second half of the match last weekend against Langwarrin – making their way into the Grand Final. Edi Asp are undefeated in D grade and will top off a perfect season should they win the premiership. Edi Asp and YC both have depth in each of their teams however not making the grand final in C grade could assist Edi greatly should any players have qualified for selection in D. This will bolster their already strong squad. Can YC snatch a win and break their hearts?

YC are the reigning premiers in B grade and will be hopeful to go back to back in 2017.

Netball Notes Frankston YCW StoneKittens And just like that we have 3 netball teams in the Grand Final! The B grade girls came out firing against Edi last week and played the best first quarter we have in a very long time. The team talk and encouragement was top notch. The team went into the second quarter with a very handy 6 goal lead but got the spooks for the some reason where we started playing behind, had fewer options presenting for the ball, made some silly decisions and stopped backing ourselves with drives. An injury time in the third gave us a chance to regroup and change things up a little bit. We took that opportunity and ran with it, we picked ourselves up again and turned the game around. BOC goes to Kristy who is in superstar form this final series. C grade also had a win against Edi, in what was truly a team effort. Edi looked determined and strong applying pressure to every pass and goal we took but we stepped it up in the last quarter. We applied pressure all over the court and backed each other up. BOC goes to Maxine for her leadership and fierce determination. D grade also had a great win against Langy who came out guns blazing with defensive pressure across the court that almost had us. We played sloppy in the first half and we were all a bit flat which you could feel and then bang! - we got our crap together! We backed each other and our defensive wall was amazing. BOC goes to Bibsy who kept the positive vibes going and created space when it was needed and led the team. Bring on Grand Finals!

The excitement of Grand Final day is here once again & we have our A & D Grade teams vying for Premiership Glory! What an amazing year! In a year that we high lighted as a rebuilding year, our teams successes, against the odds, is a true reflection of our players & coaches dedication & hard work! Well done! At the League Award night this week, our players & club once again featured. Congratulations to : - Renee the D Grade Hot Shot Goaler Award winner. - Charli & Taylah who were in the top 5 in the League B&F Count for D grade. - Lainie & Ellen who were top 4 in the League B&F count for B Grade. - Holly B who came 3rd in the League A Grade B&F. - Claire who finally won the League Coach of the Year Award! - Chris & Holly B who were named in the League Team of the Year. Finally to all our coaches, players & volunteers on winning the Leagues Most Disciplined Club! This is a great reflection of our great club & our ethos. So for now all roads lead to Jubilee Park & hopefully, the weather will be kind to us. To all our players & coaches - good luck! Bring your best! Carpe Diem!! Soar Eagles!!

Karingal Bullettes Two league BNF’s, one sharp shooter, two team of the year and one club championship! Can we get the hat trick on Sunday? Congratulations to Tayla, Bridge, Em, Mardi and Sammy - you probably couldn’t find five nicer girls either, so well deserved. A big thank you to our sponsors this year - we have been so well looked after in season 2017 and our performance on court reflects that. Three teams out of four into the big dance. Well done to Jade our netball president and her side kick Als. So much time and effort goes into running the netball department. All voluntary too. Well done to Ben and Amanda - the 2017 coaches. This week we approach grand final day with excitement and pride, wearing the red and white. This is what we have played for. Good luck to each and every Bullette taking the court today #GOBULLS #REDWHITEBOOM

Coaches Report Karingal - Coach Ben Black As we come into our third successive grand final we are super excited / grateful and very proud of our entire squads efforts this year. This year we have had a fantastic buzz around and all the girls are super excited for the challenge which lies ahead. The girls have worked extremely hard all year and the results have reflected this by having A,B and C teams all finish on top and win the minor premierships. We have also sustained 95 per cent of the entire playing group over the last 3 years which is extremely positive for the club. We would like to congratulate Edi Asp on another great year and we urge all supporters and netball lovers to come down and witness some high class elite netball on display. Today is going to be our day. Let’s go Bullettes!!!

26

Edi-Asp - Coach Claire Houben Our A grade team has had a very unsettled year with initially losing two of our key defenders but we were lucky when Michelle came on board. Michelle and Nicole have become a fantastic defending combination for us and is a strong back bone for our team. Our attacking end of the court is playing really well let by Georgie Cuthbertson in goals and our drives through centre court have been fantastic over the last couple of weeks. It has been a tough journey this year due to injuries, sickness, footy commitments etc but we are so lucky to have such depth in our team giving us so many available options on court. The three times that we have met Karingal this season they came out on top twice but our girls have a very determined, never give up attitude and now with our team coming together at the business end of the season, I am confident that we will once again match up well with Karingal and have a closely contested game of netball. Thank you to all our supporters! I hope to see you court side today as you are very much appreciated.

Jade Cahill President - Karingal Football Netball Club

Frankston YCW StoneKittens WOW what a week!! 3 from 3 into the grand final- whilst all teams kept us on the edge of our seats, as a club we couldn’t have been more proud! They went out there and never gave up- the cheering from the sidelines definitely assisted all 3 teams in taking the win Sunday! A huge thank you to every supporter that came down to watch, all our helpers at the BBQ and set up/pack up crew. Last round of the year- and it would be remiss of me not to throw in a few MASSIVE thank yous. Firstly all our Stonekitten sponsors- we couldn’t have done this season without you- we are so lucky to have such incredible businesses supporting our club & squad. To the committee- the endless hours of work that goes in behind the scenes THANK YOU. From registration nights, pre-season, game days & events you have it all covered. To our coaches who have been outstanding this year, I thank Claire, Dee & Anthony for your commitment to our club & we look forward to expanding our coaching base next year to build on this years’ success.
