MPNFL Updates MPNFL Update Finals Week 4 2017 Welcome to the 2017 Chisholm Peninsula FNL Grand Final. Well, we have come to the end of the 2017 season, and what a season it has been across the MPNFL. Last week we saw the strong support across the respective Netball Grand Finals played at FDNA and Tyabb. The Grand Finals at FDNA were hard fought contests with three of the four grand finals decided by a goal. Congratulations to Edithvale-Aspendale FNC and Crib Point A-Grade Netball going back to back Premiers. Congratulations to all the teams that have made it through the biggest day in the MPNFL calendar. Grand Finals are special days for all involved in the club, players, supporters, volunteers, local business all get behind the club and what better venue to hear the roar of all the supporters after that amazing goal or heart retching premiership win, than here at Frankston Park.

Frankston City Mayor Message It is wonderful for Frankston City to once again be hosting the football finals. With our magnificent bay views and state-of-the-art function centre here at Frankston Park it’s the ideal location to cheer on your local team. The Frankston City community is very passionate about sports and particularly football, which has been displayed in the outstanding show of support in successfully getting the Frankston Dolphins Football Club back into the VFL. We’re very excited to see the club reinstated into the VFL and look forward to cheering them on in the 2018 VFL season. AFL Vic Country 2017 WorkSafe AFL Victoria Country Grand Final Message There is nothing better in Victorian country football, than Grand Final action in September. After a grueling pre-season and tough home and away rounds, spring has arrived and with it comes a sense of optimism that today your team is on the cusp of making history on the most important day of the football calendar. Regardless of whether you’re a player, coach, umpire or supporter with your hopes hinging on the premiership decider, or just an interested onlooker, Grand Final day is always an occasion to savour. I would like to wish all teams who are competing today the best of luck and I hope win, lose or draw, you continue to be involved in country football in 2018 and beyond. While I’m certain there have been many highlights on the field this season, off it, much has been achieved. The introduction of the Community Club Sustainability Program’s Player Payment Framework (PPF) was rolled out across Victoria for its inaugural season. Complementing the Player Points System introduced last year, the PPF will assist in helping narrow the gap over time between high and low spending clubs in order to assist with the rise of escalating player payments in community football. This year we have seen significant growth in the number of females participating in community football. Thank you for your support of the growth in female football. It has been great to see so many females being welcomed into their local community club and we look forward to seeing the continued growth of female football in the future. Representative football was once again a feature for many this season, with Victoria Country taking on the Victorian Amateur Football Association at Frankston Oval. The Energy Safe Under 19s Vic Country squad kept its Big V winning streak alive after narrowly defeating the VAFA by four points, while the WorkSafe AFL Vic Country squad, led by country football product and AFL great Danny Frawley, was unable to overcome their metro counterparts, going down by 82 points in the Brian Molony Cup.

In addition, the Big V jumper was worn proudly by a host of country Victoria’s top footballers, including the best Under 18 male and female talent in the 2017 NAB AFL and AFLW U18 Championships as well as Vic Country’s best footballers with an intellectual disability in the 2017 AFL National Inclusion Carnival. Arguably one of the biggest highlights on the country football calendar this season was the 2017 WorkSafe Community Championships held in May. For the first time, the top ranked community football leagues went head-to-head at the MCG as a curtain raise to the AFL Country Game between Geelong and Essendon. Season 2017 saw thirty metropolitan and country leagues take part in the carnival across the state, with the Geelong FL edging out Mornington Peninsula Nepean FL by 24-points to be crowned Victoria’s number-one ranked community football competition. Season 2017 also saw the return of the highly successful WorkSafe Games of the Month. Champion footballers Peter Knights, David Parkin and Brent Harvey as well as current AFL stars Bryce Gibbs, Maverick Weller and Ben Brown, embraced the country football atmosphere at eight destinations across the state in a bid to promote farm safety in some of Victoria’s smallest communities. Finally, as the curtain closes on season 2017, I would like to thank the countless club and league volunteers that are the backbone of country football. Football Preview HISTORY BECKONS FOR STONECATS, SHARKS By Simon McEvoy

A GREAT moment in Peninsula footy history will unfold at Frankston Park this afternoon. It’s assured, regardless of who wins the 2017 grand final between Frankston YCW and Bonbeach. Both clubs are on the brink of rare achievements as the local footy season reaches an exciting crescendo. For YCW, a fourth successive premiership is up for grabs, while Bonbeach is out to end a 33-year premiership drought. Both sides go in confident. Frankston YCW coach Wayne Capp says “everyone’s fit” and the list is “the best it’s been all season”, with all of their VFL players available, including Anthony Bruhn and Bundy Barry. Bonbeach coach Steve Hughes says his boys “are in a really good head space” and “excited’’ by the prospect of delivering the club a long-overdue flag. The game itself should be a ripper, with opinions divided as to who will win. YCW are on a nine-game winning streak, including a decisive 31-point win over Bonbeach in Round 16. Bonbeach has won seven of its past nine and is coming off a sizzling preliminary final win when it played its best footy of the season. GRAND FINAL DAY TIDBITS * While Frankston YCW is awash with premiership experience - several Stonecats have half a dozen flags under their belt - Bonbeach has only one player who has played in a premiership: 36yo Gavin Vassallo, who has five flags at various clubs in a stellar career. The Sharks have leaned on Vassallo’s advice during the finals series. Gav is hanging up his boots at the end of today’s game. * Both coaches have won a premiership, albeit at different levels. YCW’s Wayne Capp is in his first season at the helm, but knows what it takes to win on this day. For the past four seasons he’s been YC’s assistant coach under Bugs Barry and Scott Mathers. As for his one and only flag as a coach? It was at Under 14 level. Bonbeach’s Steve Hughes coached Springvale Districts to the 2007 flag. A decade on he’s hoping lightning strikes twice and figures seven is his lucky number. * Fun fact: The entire Bonbeach side, bar Vassallo, wasn’t born when the club won its last premiership in 1984. * Bonbeach champion Shane McDonald is hoping it’s third time lucky after playing in two losing grand finals.

* Frankston YCW’s no-frills defender Craig Nankervis will be playing in his ninth Peninsula league grand final, an amazing record. He’s already a seven-time premiership player (which is an MPNFL record) and plans to make it eight today. * Key players for both sides include: Frankston YCW: Byron Barry, Kev Lylak, Tony Lester, Ash Eames, Anthony Bruhn, Kyle Hutchison, Lachie Wallace, Bundy Barry, Christian Ongarello, Brenton Credlin. Bonbeach: Shane McDonald, Dylan Jones, Mark Tyrell, Gary Carpenter, Jackson Casey, Trent Dennis-Lane, Owen Hulett, Beau Bailey, Matt Douglas, Ben Hogan. * Watch for…the captains to lead by example. Frankston YCW co-captains Jie Coghlan and Kev Lylak are strong and composed players, while Bonbeach skipper Jackson Casey is super consistent and a crucial cog in the Sharks’ structure. THE LAST WORD FROM THE COACHES * Wayne Capp (Frankston YCW): “Our guys are very proud of their history and what they’ve created in the last six to seven years. Being successful makes you hungrier for more success. They’ve got an insatiable appetite for it and they are driven to be better all the time. That’s what drives them the most, to stay at the top. They like it there and that’s how we think. We know we are hunted every week but we just try to get better and better all the time to stay that step ahead if we can.” * Steve Hughes (Bonbeach): “It’s a great opportunity, they don’t come around often so we’ve got to play our best footy. I think our mindset has got to be that we’ve got to get better and better. They are a pretty hungry group and led very well by Jackson Casey. If we can set high standards and challenge ourselves again, hopefully we can go up a level which you need to in a grand final.” THE TIPS * Mt Eliza coach Troy Shannon: BONBEACH. “If Bonbeach brings the same intensity and pressure as they did in the preliminary final they’ll be right in this game. The key will be whether they can sustain it for the entire game. I’m really looking forward to this one. The head says YCW however I think Bonbeach can break a 33-year-old drought and salute!’’ * Ex-Chelsea coach Brett Dunne: BONBEACH. “Bonbeach have responded brilliantly since their first final. I thought Edithvale would win a tight contest but Bonbeach just blew them away. YCW just seem to get the job done each time they are met with a challenge. If Bonbeach get the same early intensity and get a strong early lead they get the cup and it would be well deserved.’’ * Ex-Mornington coach Chris Holcombe: FRANKSTON YCW. “YCW. All their VFL players are back. The older guys have had a decent rest over the last month. Big occasion players through every line.’’

I think their experience, strength around the contest and backline will make it hard for Bonbeach to score. It will be a low scoring game. YC by 11 points. Look out if Dylan Jones has a day out, though.’’ * Seaford coach Ben Murphy: FRANKSTON YCW. “YCW. Plenty of GF experience. No weak links. Enough youth to have them hungry.’’ REDLEGS READY FOR GLORY IN THE RESERVES… A special achievement is within reach for Damien Kent’s MT ELIZA, which is chasing a fourth straight premiership. The Redlegs are September specialists – but they‘ll have to be at their best to overcome a strong and determined SEAFORD. Mark Dessent’s Tigers scored a stirring five-point win in the preliminary final last week, with Brendan Dawes, Liam Davenport and Levi Hughes leading from the front. They go into the big one hungry and determined. Mt Eliza has plenty of spirit and depth, with Sam Wettenhall, Aaron McIlroy, Ryland Cranwell, Will Mace and co.

A CLASSIC FLAG ENCOUNTER IN THE UNDER 19s… The best two sides all season, FRANKSTON YCW and MT ELIZA, will play off for the flag – a fortnight after they met in the second semi-final. YCW should be raring to go after a week’s rest, courtesy of their win over the Mounties in the second semi. The Stonecats showed plenty of spirit that day to fight back from a scoreless opening quarter. Daniel Hughes, Andrew Kelly and Mackenna Hura have been terrific in the finals while Shem Barry has been a multiple goal kicker in his past five appearances. Steve Brattle’s Mt Eliza, which is shooting for a fourth consecutive premiership, responded impressively last week, getting its running game going as Tom Small, Aaron Jackson and league medallist Zane Hill led from the front. Callan Rice has also been a prime mover for the Redlegs.

A preliminary final to remember last week as the boys put on a dominate display to charge into this years Grand Final. There was an even contribution with DJ, Ben Hogan and Owey among the best. The boys had threatened all year to take down a quality opponent and last week it all came together in a blistering first half of tough and classy football. Our second grand final appearance in 5 years the club is committed to end a 33 year premiership drought today. Grand Finals are tough to win but Bonbeach is prepared, united and very excited to be part of grand final day. Good luck to all players from all teams involved today. Seaford Tigers WOW! What a way to make it through to the big dance today after coming from behind so late in the game last week against YCW. Our boys certainly deserve to be here in the GF especially after dominating all season, but some doubt may have been creeping in on our supporters minds though after seeing so many players go down in week 2 of the finals. But thankfully someone forgot to mention that to the players because as they have done all year, they stepped as one and got the job done. What an impact first year senior player Taka Tohiariki played in replacement of his older Trae. Taka hadn’t played since mid June, but you wouldn’t have realised it watching him in action. His skill & composure never missed a beat especially in a cut throat final. But not to mention the work horse types of Brendan Dawes, Liam Davenport, Pete McCall & Shorty Walker. Some wise heads there. Levi Hughes, Tom Lonie & Matty Andrews work rate up was top notch and also typified our ability to get back into game when all seem lost. You’ve shown all year what it takes to play team brand football. No doubt today will be no different as I’m sure we will see plenty of unselfish acts. Today the Reserves and Under 19’s have an opportunity to win their 4th consecutive Flags, which will be an amazing feat, but there is a lot of hard work ahead of us today, taking on Seaford and YCW respectively. Last Sunday, in perfect conditions the Under 19’s took on Edi-Asp. We started well kicked the opening 5 goals of the game. Edi hit back in the 2nd kicking 3 goals to 2, but we controlled the 3rd kicking 3.6 to 1.1 to hold a 37 point lead. Edi opened with the first couple in the last term but when Campbell & Scotty kicked the next 2 late in the term the game was done and dusted and we recorded a solid 39 point win and advanced to another Grand Final Scotty finished with 3 and Oscar, Zane & Sam Hallpike a couple each. Best Players were Smally, Jacko, Ricey, Zane, Nelson, Loges & Aiden Smith. All the best to the Players, Coaches & Officials today. Give your best and the results will go our way. Club Notes Frankston YCW Stonecats Stanza number 22 aka the Grand Final has finally arrived. We are represented by the Numeros and the Unders. Congrats to Cappy and Hutcho who, with the help of their crews, have earned the right to participate in the Big Dance. Win or lose it’ll be back to the Rooms tonight for a few frothies and a look back at the season. For the second year in a row, Murph’s Boys went agonisingly close to a GF date going down to the Tiges by a large kick aka 5 points. After grafting their way to a lead in the last quarter, we couldn’t hold off a fast finishing Tigers outfit. Wags and Patto were best, James B and Kingy were solid and Marchy stepped up. Cold comfort it is but well done guys. Congrats to Chappy (Twos) and Sully (Unders) who topped the League Goalkicking. Congratulations also to the Stonekittens who won the C and D Grade Grand Finals . Sensational turnaround from the Second Semi. Plaudits to B Grade who were runners up. Presidents View Frankston YCW Stonecats 2017 has been a fantastic year for Frankston YCW FNC and I am very proud to be the President of our great club. Five out of our seven sides have made their respective grand finals. Our D grade and C grade netball sides; each won their grand finals last week by only one goal, in close and hard fought games with Edi Asp and Karingal. Our B grade netball side were runners up to Karingal who were too strong and our reserves also played off last week, a close preliminary final loss to Seaford. Today our Under 19’s play Mt Eliza and our senior side are up against Bon Beach. I am looking forward to both games. The Mt Eliza U19 side is a class outfit. Home and away saw a win to each side, the Grand Final will be a cracker. Bon Beach seniors have been impressive all year and beat us at home, earlier in the year. We managed to turn the table on them, at their home base, in the second encounter. Watching the preliminary final last week is clear for all see, Bon Beach are a very good football side and our seniors will have to be at their very best to win their 4th flag in a row. What has been very pleasing to see, for the future at YC, has been our ability able to get multiple senior games into some of our U19’s, most of which were juniors at our club. To witness these young men’s development over the year, at senior level, bodes well for the future of the Stonecats. Bonbeach Sharks Our club has enjoyed another improved season in all divisions this year. All coaches and support staff are to be commended on a job well done. In 2017 player engagement and club participation has gone to another level. The club has worked hard to build a strong culture through the continued reinforcement of our values. These are especially reflected in our coaches and club leaders. Bonbeach is being driven down a clear path and this clarity has reinforced expectation and resulted in continued improved performance over the previous 3 years. At Bonbeach we believe Winning in life=Winning in sport. Partnerships with Outside the locker room, Builders academy, Camp Awakenings and our Player Academy have assisted in galvanising our club. We are proud leaders in the support, development and welfare of our Players, coaches, supporters and the community. Today we embark on a mission to break a 33 year premiership drought. The senior side has been strong and consistent all season. Led by DJ, Jacko, Macca and Trent the boys have steered the club to some memorable 2017 wins. There is an even spread of class and hardness to the group and under Steve the team is united and committed to delivering the club and its supporters a long awaited premiership. To suggest they all deserve a premiership is an understatement and our supporters will be out in force. Grand Finals are tough to win but Bonbeach is prepared, united and very excited to be part of grand final day. Good luck to all players from all teams involved today. DRAWN FINALS NO FINALS WILL BE REPLAYED, IN CASE OF A DRAW IN ANY FINALS GAMES, EXTRA TIME WILL BE PLAYED. In the event of scores being level at the elapsed time, the timekeepers are instructed to sound the siren. The field umpire shall then: •

Direct the goal umpires to consult with each other as to the correct score. Teams are required to stay on the ground until goal umpires confirm scores correct.

•

On receiving confirmation that the scores are level instruct both captains that the match shall re-commence with the teams kicking to the same end as in the final quarter and that two five minute periods (with time on) shall be played with teams exchanging ends after the first five minute period immediately after the siren sounds.

•

Consult both captains as to their readiness to recommence the match.

•

Hold the ball aloft to indicate to timekeepers that the match is about to recommence.

•

The Timekeeper shall then sound the siren and the match will recommence.

•

In the event of scores being level after two five minute periods, a further two five minute periods (with time on) shall be played with clubs exchanging ends after the first five minute period.

This process shall continue until there is a result. Coaches are not permitted to address players at any stage after the three-quarter time interval.

Presidents View Mt Eliza Red Legs Firstly I would like to congratulate the whole club on how we have conducted ourselves throughout the year. It is a very proud day for our club having two of the three sides playing in grand finals and history will show that it is hard to win one let alone two but we have the confidence and belief in our group to write their own history in 2017. Our players have represented our club exceptionally throughout the year and through the finals series and they deserve all the success that is served up to them. There are just so many people who have contributed this year, from all of Troy’s gang thanks guys, the development in our young players has been phenomenal and a credit to you all. To our football Manager Duggers well done, as previously mentioned our hardworking committee it has been a pleasure to work with you all and last but not least our team mangers and medical staff who get our guys on the field each week. Senior Coachâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s Message Frankston YCW Coach - Wayne Capp First of all I would like to congratulate Steve Hughes and the Bonbeach Football Club on a great year and making the Grand Final. Today we have two teams competing in Grand Finals and this is a culmination of hard work over 12 months from everyone involved at the Frankston YCW Football Club. The support we receive from our Sponsors, Committee, Training Staff is greatly appreciated. I would also like to acknowledge and thank our coaching staff who have worked tirelessly this season, Steve Reidy, Daniel Strickland, Brad Ostermeyer, John Murphy, Sean Rooth and Chris Hutchison. New to the club in 2017, Onga is an experienced key defender can defend in air and at ground level. 2017 interleague representative and was named fullback in the team of the year.

9. Michael Debenham

2016 premiership player, Debba will give pace on the outside and has the tank to run all day.

25. Luke Paynter

Represented Vic Country this year. Still eligible for U/19s, Luke has proven himself as a member of the best 22. Can play a variety of positions, but will spend most of his time across half forward.

38. Josh Butland

Still eligible for U/19â&#x20AC;&#x2122;s this season, Josh has had a breakout year in the forward line. Leading goal kicker for the club and can kick goals from anywhere inside the 50.

11. Anthony Barry

5-time premiership player. Previous club captain, Bundy is a Footscray VFL listed player who won a premiership with them in 2016. Hugely experienced player who is a fantastic user of the ball.

26. Anthony Bruhn

3-time premiership player, Bruhnny is also a Footscray listed VFL player. Has excellent game sense and always makes the most of his opportunities, Bruhnny will lead the forward line with direction and experience.

2. Byron Barry

6-time premiership player, multiple interleague representative who was named back pocket in the 2017 team of the year. Is an excellent decision maker who provides direction for those around him.

12. Matthew La Fontaine

A Collingwood VFL listed player, Laffa represented the MPNFL at interleague and Vic Country in the U/19â&#x20AC;&#x2122;s this year as well as being named on the wing in team of the year. Provides plenty of run on the wing and half forward.

27. Kyle Hutchison (VC)

6-time premiership player and vice-captain of the club, Hooch also represented the league in Interleague, and Vic Country this year. He was also named midfield in the team of the year. Kyle provides bullocking strength coupled with elite skills, and loves this time of year.

40. Jacob Cheverley

Jacob has had a breakout season, spending time in various positions but playing his best footy through the midfield. A strong player who never takes a backward step.

3. Scott Macleod (DVC)

3-time premiership player who represented Vic Country this year. An aggressive midfield who can play an inside or outside midfield role.

14. Kevin Lylak ( C )

5-time premiership player and co-captain of the club. Plays a lockdown role on small forwards. Hard to be beaten one on one, is unexpectedly quick for his size.

30. Angus Wright

Angus is the youngest member of the team. However he plays with the confidence and skill level of someone many years his senior. Angus loves to run and take the game on at every opportunity.

5-time premiership player, Tony is a left footed midfielder who has lots of experience playing in big games. Expect to see him at the bottom of packs all day.

6-time premiership player, Jie is one of two Co-Captains of the club. Is a pentetrating kick providing run off the wing and half back.

16. Macklin Raine New to the club in 2017. Sauce is built like a brick wall. Provides a strong option up forward and will spend some time in the ruck.

Richmond VFL and 2-time premiership player. A tall key defender who can run all day. Received BOG in last yearâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s grand final.

31. Jake Lovett

Premiership winner in 2016, Jake is listed at Casey Demons VFL. Jake can direct play across half back and move through the midfield with ease. Very cool under pressure.

18. Brenton Credlin

Also listed at Casey VFL, dippa has excellent agility and ability to beat a man. Very good at finding the footy, dippa also drives the team forward regularly.

7. Ash Eames

6-time premiership player. Has dominated the ruck for years, Ash will look to give the midfielders first use of the ball as well as being a great marking option around the ground.

19. Ryley Hodson

2-time premiership player that can play forward or back. Leads well to the football and can turn on a dime. Defenders describe him like theyâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;re ordering a coffee, tall and skinny.

34. Lachlan Wallace

Small Collingwood VFL listed midfield. Is explosive from the stoppages and good skills on both sides of his body. Provides plenty of run.

63. Lachlan Williams

Lachie is listed at Box Hill VFL. New to the club in 2017, Lachie is a silky operator on both sides of the body and provides run and great decision making.

8. Paul Minchington 3-time premiership player, Mincho was an interleague representative playing as a small forward. Has silky skills and loves taking a hanger.

Like a fine wine, Knackers seems to be getting better with age. A 7-time senior premiership player that will provide experience in defense.

27. Dylan Jones The most versatile ruckman going around. Good at his trade and then works hard around the ground. A pleasure to see in action.

59. Alex Trowell A magician in the forward 50 arc. He applies great pressure and frequently kicks goals. Classy finisher.

3. Gary Carpenter Courageous, skilled, adaptable, vocal, tough. An on-field leader who doesn’t shy away from the contest.

4. Beau Bailey Senior VFL experience at Sandy this season has added to his great cleanness with the footy and his pace. Beau finds the footy.

6. James Murnane A utility who can play every position for the Sharks. Uses the ball well and has a great pair of hands.

7. Shane McDonald (DVC) A genuine match-winner. One of the best the MPNFL has seen. An absolute pleasure to watch.

10. Brad Sykes A great on-field leader who makes good decisions with the ball. Can play a role forward, mid or back.

17. Tom Hogan A Stingray-listed tall and versatile player, Tom has incredible athleticism and doubles as a running and creative player.

18. Jackson Sole A versatile and hard working player. Tackles and spoils well, but also runs and carries and sets up Bonbeach going the other way.

19. Lachlan Gill-Renouf A Casey-Listed player who has shown his decision making, hardness and outside run are great attributes for the Sharks.

20. Jack Williams Finds the ball and uses it well. Great pressure player who can hurt the opposition on the attack.

28. Jackson Casey (C.) The Captain who does everything at 100%. He’s a tackling and clearance machine and leads through his actions and voice.

29. Ben Hogan A quick and electric young player who uses his running ability to set up play for the Sharks regularly. Puts pressure on the opposition

32. Jacob Flannery A great pressure player who rarely loses a 1-1 contest. Uses the ball well and is as tough as they come.

A young up and coming star of the club, who has been praised as a young Gary Carpenter. Unfortunately injuring his ankle late in the season means he won’t play today.

What A Season…But It’s Not Quite Over Yet… GrandFinals…Milestones...Opportunities...Firsts... and many more memorable moments are what has epitomised the 2017 season at the SUA. In a season of continued change opportunities arose for anyone willing to continuously pound the pavement, chase advice and grab the challenge by the scruff of the neck. The kids were blooded and the “Dad’s Army” continued to show all that so long as the old dog still has a pulse they’ll be out there doing they’re all to hold the young whipper snappers at bay. But by George are those whipper snappers are now well and truly coming. There’s a new wave, not like any seen for the best part of a decade, hitting the SUA by storm. Many of the old folks will be sipping their glasses of champers from a deckchair today. And now we set off for the final weekend of the season with umpires and players alike chasing the ultimate glory. For players, the shine of the premiership cup, while for umpires, the chance to officiate in the biggest games of the year. While not everyone can taste ultimate success, everyone should be able to look back on season 2017 with fond memories and a sense of achievement. Just getting out on the park week-in week-out and having a good crack is success. So to all involved in Grand Finals - best of luck. Run hard, play hard, be fair and enjoy. To those not – continue to strive for improvement and do it all with a smile.

Peninsula FNL Senior Grand Final Umpires FIELD UMPIRES Travis Dennerley Some people collect stamps, other beer bottle tops. But Trav, he just collects Peninsula Grand Finals. They’re just his thing you see. With over 15 years of service to SUA and many more to umpiring in Victoria, Trav will just amble out for his 6th Peninsula Senior Grand Final (7th overall). Selflessness is the real reason his treasure chest isn’t overflowing further with several seasons sacrificed for the development of aspiring and gifted AFL umpires when in junior ranks. Unassuming and always ready to teach a young pup a trick or two, many a young umpire will hope he has many a year still left in those shiny new boots.

Josh Shields

Every once in a while along comes a young up and comer with the ability to do anything. In the past 7 years and only just hitting the ripe old age of 24 Josh has now umpired 6 Senior Grand Finals across multiple disciplines (boundary and field). Following Senior Grand Finals on the boundary in both Peninsula and Nepean Leagues it only took Josh 2 years to be straight back at the top in the field. The one year transition culminating in the Peninsula U19s decider. Josh last year completed a full set of Senior Grand Finals with a South East decider following on from 2014’s Nepean decider and 2015’s Peninsula. The knockabout kid who takes everything is his stride has the umpiring world at his feet. Now back to double up his Peninsula numbers it might be time he tried his hand in the goals and attempt become the first ever to chase the triple triple.

Nick MacDonald

The 23 year old from the Casey region has already built quite an umpiring CV. Dutchi’s aimless wandering of that thin white line has taken him to heights never thought possible when injury after injury kept trying to rob him of September glory.

Now don’t be confused when you look onto the ground at any stage and see a sea of red. No you’re not seeing the same bloke run up and down the line on each side at once. This 19 year old Dutchi look alike (ask him and he’s the reason Dutchi has at least half of those Grand Finals) has back up last year’s Nepean Senior Grand Final with his first Peninsula Senior Grand Final. With involvement in many AFL Victoria championships a future in the VFL is on this horizon for Jordan.

Shaun Penny

These days Shaun must just dream of honour boards. Specifically the Peninsula Senior Grand Final board down at the SUA rooms. Once he finds an engraver who isn’t sick of writing his name he’ll be able to read it 9 times. It’ll almost be like counting sheep with a head flat on the pillow. There is barely a record left in the boundary domain that he doesn’t hold. And to top it off he’s done just about everything else in umpiring that any boundary would merely dream of. He has officiated in TAC Cup games and Under 16 and 18 National Championships. But his ultimate achievement is running out onto the MCG to umpire the curtain raiser to the epic 2008 Hawthorn v Geelong Grand Final. The founder of Fast Tracked Performance, maybe one day Shaun will coach a young gun with the longevity to chase him down. Calling any carpenters that have any secrets to doorway expansion...

GOAL UMPIRES Robert Ryan This gentle giant has soared through the ranks this year to prove that nice guys always win out. Having only been with SUA for 3 years now, Rob’s Mr Reliable stature has allowed him to unassumingly take himself to the top with minimal fuss. Following on from last year’s Peninsula Reserves Grand Final, this is Rob’s first Senior Grand Final. When not waving flags, Rob’s flaying a stick of another kind with just as much success...was that yet another birdie?

Emma Young

Part of SUA royalty, Emma keeps her family’s reputation in the association held to the highest regard. Not to be seen as just any member of the family Emma is the proud owner of 3 Senior Grand Finals (one in each League) in between the big sticks. Her 2nd Peninsula one will be her first double up. Closing in on 10 years with SUA Emma’s consistency over many a year always ranks her in the top echelon of Goalies. Luckily for those taking pot shots from the pockets, Emma’s concentration will not be affected this year after her beloved Bulldogs (for whom she follows around the country) failed to create even the meekest of yelps.
