Bendigo Community Bank MPNFL Update Finals Week 4 2017 Welcome to the 2017 Bendigo Bank Nepean FNL Grand Final. Well, we have come to the end of the 2017 season, and what a season it has been across the MPNFL. Last week we saw the strong support across the respective Netball Grand Finals played at FDNA and Tyabb. The Grand Finals at FDNA were hard fought contests with three of the four grand finals decided by a goal. Congratulations to Edithvale-Aspendale FNC and Crib Point A-Grade Netball going back to back Premiers. Congratulations to all the teams that have made it through the biggest day in the MPNFL calendar. Grand Finals are special days for all involved in the club, players, supporters, volunteers, local business all get behind the club and what better venue to hear the roar of all the supporters after that amazing goal or heart retching premiership win, than here at Frankston Park.

Frankston City Mayor Message It is wonderful for Frankston City to once again be hosting the football finals. With our magnificent bay views and state-of-the-art function centre here at Frankston Park it’s the ideal location to cheer on your local team. The Frankston City community is very passionate about sports and particularly football, which has been displayed in the outstanding show of support in successfully getting the Frankston Dolphins Football Club back into the VFL. We’re very excited to see the club reinstated into the VFL and look forward to cheering them on in the 2018 VFL season. Frankston City Council values the partnership within AFL South East and all the clubs within our municipality. I’d like to wish the competing teams all the best in their finals efforts. Bendigo Community Bank 2017 WorkSafe AFL Victoria Country Grand Final Message There is nothing better in Victorian country football, than Grand Final action in September. After a grueling pre-season and tough home and away rounds, spring has arrived and with it comes a sense of optimism that today your team is on the cusp of making history on the most important day of the football calendar. Regardless of whether you’re a player, coach, umpire or supporter with your hopes hinging on the premiership decider, or just an interested onlooker, Grand Final day is always an occasion to savour. I would like to wish all teams who are competing today the best of luck and I hope win, lose or draw, you continue to be involved in country football in 2018 and beyond. While I’m certain there have been many highlights on the field this season, off it, much has been achieved. The introduction of the Community Club Sustainability Program’s Player Payment Framework (PPF) was rolled out across Victoria for its inaugural season. Complementing the Player Points System introduced last year, the PPF will assist in helping narrow the gap over time between high and low spending clubs in order to assist with the rise of escalating player payments in community football. This year we have seen significant growth in the number of females participating in community football. Thank you for your support of the growth in female football. It has been great to see so many females being welcomed into their local community club and we look forward to seeing the continued growth of female football in the future. Representative football was once again a feature for many this season, with Victoria Country taking on the Victorian Amateur Football Association at Frankston Oval. The Energy Safe Under 19s Vic Country squad kept its Big V winning streak alive after narrowly defeating the VAFA by four points, while the WorkSafe AFL Vic Country squad, led by country football product and AFL great Danny Frawley, was unable to overcome their metro counterparts, going down by 82 points in the Brian Molony Cup.

In addition, the Big V jumper was worn proudly by a host of country Victoria’s top footballers, including the best Under 18 male and female talent in the 2017 NAB AFL and AFLW U18 Championships as well as Vic Country’s best footballers with an intellectual disability in the 2017 AFL National Inclusion Carnival. Arguably one of the biggest highlights on the country football calendar this season was the 2017 WorkSafe Community Championships held in May. For the first time, the top ranked community football leagues went head-to-head at the MCG as a curtain raise to the AFL Country Game between Geelong and Essendon. Season 2017 saw thirty metropolitan and country leagues take part in the carnival across the state, with the Geelong FL edging out Mornington Peninsula Nepean FL by 24-points to be crowned Victoria’s number-one ranked community football competition. Season 2017 also saw the return of the highly successful WorkSafe Games of the Month. Champion footballers Peter Knights, David Parkin and Brent Harvey as well as current AFL stars Bryce Gibbs, Maverick Weller and Ben Brown, embraced the country football atmosphere at eight destinations across the state in a bid to promote farm safety in some of Victoria’s smallest communities. Finally, as the curtain closes on season 2017, I would like to thank the countless club and league volunteers that are the backbone of country football. Football Preview Sharks to win big dance By Toe Punt Welcome everyone to the 2017 MPNFL Nepean Division Grand Final between Sorrento and Frankston Bombers. Sorrento blasted its way into the big dance with a dominant second semi-final display against Rosebud a fortnight ago, while Frankston Bombers advanced after knocking over the Bombers in the Preliminary Final last week. These sides have met on two occasions this season. The first time was a disaster for Frankston. After conceding the first three goals of the game, the Sharks went on a rampage and won by almost 100 points. Three Frankston Bombers’ players were reported in that game and two were suspended. The second time around at Frankston’s Greg Beck Oval, the final score was a bit closer but the end result was the same – Sorrento ended-up with the four points. Frankston is likely to go into its most important match without number one ruckman Ryan Kitchen. Kitchen appeared to injure a hamstring in the third quarter of the Preliminary Final and played no role in the final quarter, despite the game being in the balance. His right hamstring was iced for the entire last quarter.

Given his form over the past two finals, ‘Kitch’ was going to play a vital role against Ryan Williams, who has been dominant in the second half of the year for the Sharks. Corey Macari, who looks best suited in the ruck, will need to shoulder most of the responsibility for the Bombers in the middle of the ground. This then of course robs the Bombers of another defender. The big question on Frankston going into the Grand Final is ‘can they kick a winning score’? Who is going to kick Frankston’s goals? Zac Longham is likely to get James Brigden, who rarely loses a battle, while Frankston’s second go-to man, coach Beau Muston will get Ryan Potter. Beau is playing at 85 per cent tops and will find the going tough. Justin Kiss was electric in the reserves in the finals and could be a smoky given his unpredictability and mercurial talents. Or, they may opt for Brett Sutton to perform a lock-down role on Treeby or Tapscott. The final option is to replace a like for a like in Aaron Pasquill. Given the lack of firepower in Frankston’s attack, this leaves a whole lot of responsibility on Alex Harnett, Jason Kingsbury, Sam Fox, Matt Harris and Dale Sutton to kick multiple goals. They all rotate through the middle but they’ll need to kick 6-10 goals between them for the Bombers to win.

Football Preview Defensively, the Bombers won’t be afforded the luxury of having the likes of Jarryd Amalfi and Ryan Marks-Logan playing loose and providing run and drive from half back. Corey Buchan will go to Chris Dawes and Marks-Logan will need to go to Nick Corp. This leaves Al Williams for Leigh Poholke. One of the best forwards in the game, Poholke relishes playing on the third-ranked defender most weeks. Amalfi and Nathan Lonie will need to provide the run and drive off half back, however, the Sharks will be sure to not allow them any free space. In the middle, the Sharks are bigger and stronger. Luke Tapscott is a star of the competition and a wrecking machine. James Hallahan is silky and smooth and then there’s the fleet-footed, intelligent and skilful youngsters in Zac Byrns and Shannon Gladman, who have dominated most weeks. Tyrren Head, Daniel Grant, Troy Schwarze and Chad Harris are all dominant players who are given free licence to run, carry and create for the Sharks. Sheer weight of talent, and Frankston has a heap of it, still favours the Sharks. The Sorrento midfield will get the ball inside their attacking zone enough times for the powerful forward half to kick a winning score. Unfortunately, Frankston’s forward line, which is leaner than the opposition, just won’t get the same amount of forward entries. One would love to predict a thrilling grand final; however, Sorrento has been a class above this season and will win comfortably.

RESERVES In the Reserves, Rosebud will be looking to improve on its performance a couple of weeks ago when it took on Sorrento. Given the Buds are no longer in the seniors, there is likely to be some players who can drop back into the Grand Final side today. Whilst we are sure to focus on the likes of Kenyon, Mattison, Lawson, Cameron and Muller for the Sharks, given their legendary status at the Sharks and their experience in big games, we can’t underestimate the fact that the Buds are the reigning premiers and know how to get the job done. They will go into the game as rank outsiders, given they were touched-up in the Second Semi Final, however, I doubt we’ll see a repeat of that today. UNDER 19s It’s hard to look past Somerville against Red Hill in the Under 19s today. There hasn’t been a lot between the Eagles and Hillmen this season, until the Second Semi Final, where the Eagles flexed their muscles. Somerville has been quite unsettled this season, given it has had plenty of players in and out of the seniors during the year. The Eagles have shown in the finals that with a full contingent, it’s pretty hard to stop.

After a fantastic season of football our Development Squad has won through for the opportunity to defend their Premiership Title against Sorrento. For the Club it is the top of the roller coaster ride that has been this finals campaign. Premierships are what we play for and the whole club and our community of sponsors and supporters will make themselves heard on the hill at Kars St. Oval today! We take great pride in our community football development program, providing an opportunity and pathway for the graduates of our highly engaging Rosebud Junior Football Club to find a place in senior football and take advantage of the healthy, supportive networks our footy club provides. Characterising the outstanding leadership and integrity of our coaches this year has been Development Coach Luke Farrelly, who over many seasons, has truly represented what the Club is about. His leadership will be on full display again today - make sure you get out on the oval at ¼ and ¾ time to help him lift the boys. Last week unfortunately also took us to the bottom of the roller coaster ride with the defeat of our Senior team – on the day, at the end, we were not in front. Adrian’s address to the players after the game was consistent with his supportive and developmental messages all year. Congratulations to all concerned with the U19s who have made it through to our fourth grand final this decade. We wish Happy and his charges all the best for today’s encounter with Sommie. Certainly the two best under’s sides are out there. As a club we are proud to continue producing high calibre boys who represent themselves and the club so well. It is a no brainer in the face of the points system and the salary cap. We also congratulate Millie Ross, winner of the Netball U17 B/F Award. Unfortunately her team was not able to get across the line in the Grand Final. This team also demonstrates the depth coming through our junior netball program. This writer wishes to express on behalf of the club our thanks to Blackers for all you have brought to the club. Your professional approach has seen final’s in each of the four years with us. Well here we are at the BIG DANCE for our U19s. It is very exciting for the boys to make the Grand Final. They will have the support of the club behind them today. Congratulations to our coach Will Casey, 2nd year in the gig, Scotty Nation his more than ample assistant and Dave Harrison the Team manager. The effort the boys have put in has been brilliant and hopefully the boys deliver to get the benefits of your hard work. The club had 11 players this year make their debut for the season and of those 11, 5 were from our U19s. Nagle, Stapleton, Nation, Delmo & Skinner and 2 others in Roberts & Gruar backed up their debuts in 2016. This not only puts the club in a good position for the future but for today as well. these guys have planned senior footy so must stand up! We have played Red Hill 3 times for 1 win, so we need to square the ledger! We played well in the semifinal but we need to get up and about early to try and grab an advantage. We have only played 1 game in the last month with byes etc, so we must be switched on from the first bounce! Good Luck lads! Go Eagles What ever happens this afternoon we will be back at the rooms at 3.00pm to celebrate the season that was and start planning for 2018. Sorrento Sharks Having not made the finals in 2016 The Sorrento Football & Netball Club have worked hard to evolve in 2017. It was fantastic to see the U15’s win the Premiership and the U19’s make the Preliminary Final. It’s a great sign for the future of the club to have our young players participate in the finals. Congratulations to Jack Gipp on winning a well-deserved U19’s Best & Fairest award, Leigh Poholke winning the Seniors Leading Goal Kicker and Sorrento awarded Champion Club. In addition, we had 5 players selected in the 2017 Nepean Team of the year. Congratulations to James Hallahan, Luke Tapscott, Daniel Grant, Nick Corp and Leigh Poholke. Fantastic achievements. It is great to have both the Reserves and Seniors in Grand Finals. “Fingers crossed”. They have both played well throughout the year and we are proud of them all particularly the one pointers in the teams who have stepped up. Frankston Bombers What a great year 2017 has been down at Bomberland , finishing the season with all teams in the finals, but only the Seniors making it to that one day in September. The Bombers are focused and Beau has the boys up and about and after last year they have “Unfinished Business” to go one better this year. Special Thanks to Beau’s staff, Greeny, Hally, Zach and Jamie for all your efforts this year. Without your input the boys wouldn’t be here. Also a big thanks to Trav and Booze in the two’s who just fell short last week. A great effort by Zach to get the Under 19’s into the finals and they will only get better next year. Rosebud Buds Firstly I’d like to congratulate all the premiership winners in netball from last weekend well done girls (no Rosebud teams this year unfortunately). Well it’s been a fantastic season for our club once again proving that if you believe in your local athletes they will deliver whether it be football or netball. Our 2 new senior coaches in both codes have supplied a wealth of endless professionalism to the playing groups which will carry into 2018 with the re-signing of Adrian McBean (football) and Nicole Hadgkiss (netball). Well done to our senior football team, the competition was super strong at the top this year and you showed just how good a champion team can operate, although we didn’t make it today, our player points each week when we take the field are generally by far the lowest which is indicative of the junior development structures carried out by some very dedicated local volunteers, thank you. Our U/19’s just missed finals this year but I’m sure they’ll be back for pre-season in the warmer months raring to go. We had 6 of our players who are bottom age in the Dandenong Stingrays TAC cup regularly playing which is a fantastic achievement. This week will be our development teams 23rd game in 2017 and it’s certainly territory they’ve been in before given their success in 2016. It takes a very humble hard working group to ensure they are up for the challenge week in week out and that’s where our lads excel because of their bond both on and off the field. Coach Luke Farrelly is #1 in the eyes of his team and he delivers nothing but positivity into the group which is a major plus in sport nowadays. Luke’s passion will be on show again today between 11:45am and 2pm, so let’s all get behind him and show our support. Finally, thank you to All our volunteers and good luck today lads. Somerville Eagles Well today sees the culmination of 10 months worth of effort as a club Netball finished on the Saturday just gone, with the clubs C & B girls playing in the final. C’s lost in overtime and fortunately the B girls were able to bring home the silverware. To the Girls a hearty congratulations on the win. Both games were a testimony to Netty on the Peninsula. We move on to today, and for us to have the Under’s playing today, confirms that all the good work done during the season by the players and the coach, has paid off. Wilbur and the boys have had a ripping season and today hopefully they can go that final step and see the fruits of their labour. No matter what happens today, to play off in the Grand Final is no mean feat. Today of course also marks the closing of the 2017 season, a season that has seen it’s ups and downs both on and off field for the club but here we are today. To Paul and Glenn I can’t thank you two enough for all the support you have given the club over the years. And to my club, we have no room for ego’s as we stand as one. #got the job done. Red Hill Hillmen This Saturday sees us playing off in the under 19’s Grand Final for the second year in a row, I am hopeful we can go one step further than we did last year and be fortunate enough to bring home a flag to the Red Hill Football Netball Club. I would like to congratulate our boys for their performances this year both on and off field. The entire group has been dedicated to training and playing the game in the right spirit, as well as assisting with duties around the club on game day. Playing off this weekend is a much deserved reward for all their hard work. I would like to thank our coach, Andrew Gilmour, for all his hard work and efforts in preparing the boys week in and week out, well done Happy. Thanks must also go to all the support staff, trainers, team managers, water boys, runners and assistants without whom we could not provide the support the team needs to perform each week. Like all clubs these tasks are undertaken by volunteers who do a great job, many thanks one and all. We go into Saturdays game quietly confident but if we are not properly prepared and do not show a very talented Somerville side the respect they deserve things may not go our way. What A Season…But It’s Not Quite Over Yet… GrandFinals…Milestones...Opportunities...Firsts... and many more memorable moments are what has epitomised the 2017 season at the SUA. In a season of continued change opportunities arose for anyone willing to continuously pound the pavement, chase advice and grab the challenge by the scruff of the neck. The kids were blooded and the “Dad’s Army” continued to show all that so long as the old dog still has a pulse they’ll be out there doing they’re all to hold the young whipper snappers at bay. But by George are those whipper snappers are now well and truly coming. There’s a new wave, not like any seen for the best part of a decade, hitting the SUA by storm. Many of the old folks will be sipping their glasses of champers from a deckchair today. And now we set off for the final weekend of the season with umpires and players alike chasing the ultimate glory. For players, the shine of the premiership cup, while for umpires, the chance to officiate in the biggest games of the year. While not everyone can taste ultimate success, everyone should be able to look back on season 2017 with fond memories and a sense of achievement. Just getting out on the park week-in week-out and having a good crack is success.

Nepean FNL Senior Grand Final Umpires FIELD UMPIRES Kimberley Boyce Expectation, the grind and then the ultimate success. After 16 years dating back to when she was just a bub (or at least you would assume she was at that age), Kim has worked her way from the boundary to the field, from Melbourne to Darwin and Brisbane and back again to now achieve the ultimate goal of her first SUA Senior Grand Final. But not only is she a outstanding field umpire, she is equally adept to jumping hurdles in the athletic arena like her idol Jana Pittman with whom she has had the privilege of training with.

Daniel Outhred

Good things come to those who wait and work their backsides off. There really isn’t much more that anyone can say about Dan. The ultimate nice guy and one time reserves native, Dan has shown that a bit of hard work and a positive attitude not only wins hearts but also results. Once a young boundary umpire and now a 1st time Senior Grand Final field umpire this everyday lad with a pure red and blue heart (his heart also beats true when a goalie flies their grand old flag) should be an inspiration to the everyday umpire.

Rick Taig

If ruling the classroom wasn’t enough for this short statured man (yes the primary school team still needs a point guard) with big red rosy cheeks (think those that all grannies love), Rick just has to keep proving time and time again his standing in the top echelon of SUA umpires. Not content with just one Senior Grand Final in each League, he backs up last year’s 2nd Peninsula decider with his 2nd Nepean finale to give him 5 Senior Grand Finals in total. All of this surrounding a 3 year stint at the VFL where the lack of his bubbly personality is still being felt to this day. The ultimate SUA man, he will no doubt leave one of the lasting legacies at the association in years to come.

Wade Anderson Having joined SUA from South Metro Juniors, Wade is part of one of the associations most dedicated families. Making his senior debut 3 years ago, Wade has worked his way up through the ranks to progressively umpire grand finals in the U19s, Reserves and culminating now his maiden Senior gig. A part time Goal umpire in 2017 as just in order to try and upstage his old man, the young pup of the family has a bright career ahead.

Jordan Nicholls

A larger than life, pint sized character with a breathing apparatus the most experienced divers would kill for, Jordie makes his long awaited and deserved Senior Grand Final debut. Some call him a pest, the odd one lovable. Jordie’s infectious personality lights up every room even if infuriating some. Jordie is a greta example of perseverance and a never say die attitude.

GOAL UMPIRES Harley Trickey In just his second year on the goal panel at SUA, Harley has flown up the ranking to perform his finger exercises in his maiden Senior Grand Final. Under the expert tutelage of his “actual” work boss (in the real world), the legendary James Richardson of SUA goal umpiring record breaking fame, Harley’s improvement has been second to none. The big question now is will Richo roster him on just to prevent him starting the record chase down...?

Bradley Kellett

Two years and two Senior Grand Finals. Now that’s one sure way to start what will no doubt be an extremely successful goal umpiring career. With his beloved Bulldogs not even attempting a yelp this year, Brad’s undivided attention was set on backing up his outstanding first year to prove that there would be no second year blues. Through this past season he has also officiated in numerous TAC Cup games and also the Interleague Division One playoff on the holy grail of sporting areas (MCG).

BOUNDARY UMPIRES Luke Walley Move aside paparazzi, there’s a new man in town. With an eye behind a camera to rival the best and the owner of some stunning albums Luke’s the man for all your event filming and photography. But his skills don’t just end there. Luke is backing last year’s decider with his 2nd consecutive Nepean Senior Grand Final appearance. The challenge for all those with a camera is to get those images that would make even Luke blush.

DRAWN FINALS NO FINALS WILL BE REPLAYED, IN CASE OF A DRAW IN ANY FINALS GAMES, EXTRA TIME WILL BE PLAYED. In the event of scores being level at the elapsed time, the timekeepers are instructed to sound the siren. The field umpire shall then: •

Direct the goal umpires to consult with each other as to the correct score. Teams are required to stay on the ground until goal umpires confirm scores correct.

•

On receiving confirmation that the scores are level instruct both captains that the match shall re-commence with the teams kicking to the same end as in the final quarter and that two five minute periods (with time on) shall be played with teams exchanging ends after the first five minute period immediately after the siren sounds.

•

Consult both captains as to their readiness to recommence the match.

•

Hold the ball aloft to indicate to timekeepers that the match is about to recommence.

•

The Timekeeper shall then sound the siren and the match will recommence.

•

In the event of scores being level after two five minute periods, a further two five minute periods (with time on) shall be played with clubs exchanging ends after the first five minute period.

This process shall continue until there is a result. Coaches are not permitted to address players at any stage after the three-quarter time interval.
