AFL Vic Country Welcome to the 2018 WorkSafe AFL Victoria Community Championships

The battle for the ultimate football bragging rights will be up for grabs today, with the return of the 2018 WorkSafe AFL Victoria Community Championships. This year, the WorkSafe AFL Victoria Community Championships once again promises to deliver another exciting round of community football, as the opportunity to participate in senior representative programs continues to be a highlight for footballers in community competitions across the state. Today, a total of 32 leagues will compete in a one off head-to-head match across 16 different venues around Victoria, including JLT Community Series venues Central Reserve Colac and Moe’s Ted Summerton Reserve, while Peter Jackson VFL and TAC Cup venues Preston City Oval and Queen Elizabeth Oval (Bendigo) will also host matches. Highlighted this season is the return of the highest ranked country game at the MCG, with the 7 v 8 match between Ballarat FNL and Goulburn Valley League to be played as a curtain raiser to the Round 9 AFL Country Game match between Essendon and Geelong. In addition, the leagues’ next crop of local senior stars will also headline at one of Melbourne’s iconic turfs, with the leagues’ Under 19 representative match to be played at Punt Road Oval. This is a fantastic opportunity for not only players, but for umpires, coaches and volunteers to run out on the game’s biggest stage. I would like to take this opportunity to thank everyone involved in making this match a reality, including our competition sponsor WorkSafe, AFL, Essendon and Geelong Football Clubs for their support. The battle for community football’s top ranking is set to be another blockbuster, when the current numberone-ranked Geelong FNL attempt to secure its third straight Community Championships title when it lines up against the Eastern FL at Etihad Stadium. Big crowds

are expected at the match which will be a curtain raiser to the Round 9 AFL game between St. Kilda and Collingwood on Saturday night. In addition, the Community Championships will take centre stage in Melbourne’s south-east, with the 11 v 12 match between AFL Yarra Ranges and South East FNL to be played at Beaconsfield’s Holm Park as a curtain raiser to the Round 7 Peter Jackson VFL match between Richmond and Sandringham. We are delighted to be able to bring the best of community football to the some of the game’s most iconic venues and provide players with the opportunity to showcase their skills in front of big crowds. In addition to the Championships, it’s great to see a host of junior and senior female community football stars don their local colours and participate in a number of representative games taking place as curtain raisers to their respective Community Championship senior match. Visit aflvic.com.au for the full fixtures. Following on from a successful 2018 Community Umpiring Week earlier this month, I would like to congratulate all the umpires who have been selected to adjudicate in today’s matches. Their hard work, dedication and strong performances either in the V/Line Umpiring Academies or metropolitan league associations will put them in good stead to officiate community football’s top players. Lastly, I would like to take this opportunity to thank all the leagues, staff, players, coaches and volunteers involved in the 2018 WorkSafe AFL Victoria Community Championships, for their enthusiasm and support in the lead up to the event. We hope that you enjoy the experience and wish you the best of luck for the remainder of the 2018 football season. Stephen O’Donohue AFL Victoria Community Football & Development Manager

SEFNL Welcome Welcome everyone to Holm Park Reserve in Beaconsfield and to one of the most unique days of interleague football and netball to ever be staged. In the normal course of events, matches between the 11th and 12th ranked leagues would carry some special meaning - with a spot in the top-10 leagues in the state up for grabs. But today, both the South East Football Netball League (SEFNL) and AFL Yarra Ranges will be eyeing each other off. You see there is a strong chance that these two leagues will be merged into a newly-formed divisional structure in 2019, so bragging rights are on the line in more ways than one. While being supportive of the proposed move in 2019, today I wish all those involved with the SEFNL the very best of luck as we try to atone for last year’s loss at Casey Fields against the Jonathan Brown coached Hampden League. That loss broke a five-year winning streak for SEFNL, one of only two leagues – alongside the number-one ranked Geelong – to carry such a record into last year’s AFL Victoria Community Championships.

To first time coach Rhys Nisbet and his support crew, on behalf of AFL South East, I wish you a successful day. To co-captains Michael Collins and Marc Holt, I also wish you and your players well and also extend the league’s best wishes to Under 19s coach Leigh McQuillen and his young group of stars. On the netball front, all the best to senior coach Karen Meredith and 17-Under coach Matt Cooke. It is an honour at any time to play representative football or netball. Playing with your peers at such an elite level is an experience most players never forget. Thank you to the Beaconsfield Club for staging the event, and I wish both leagues a close, exciting and injury free day of football and netball. John Anderson AFLSE Region General Manager

AFLYR Welcome AFL Yarra Ranges is excited to take on the SEFNL in the 2018 Worksafe AFL Victoria Community Championships. These Championships have become a key fixture in community football calendars, which provides footballers and netballers the opportunity to test themselves against the very best in community leagues. AFL Yarra Ranges have had a long and proud history in representative football and netball. We thank our clubs and players for their commitment to the program and are pleased that in recent history, most of our competitions premier players make themselves available for these games. This commitment is greatly appreciated and highlights the sense of community and pride in the Yarra Ranges. Thank you to the Beaconsfield Football Netball Club for hosting this week’s games. As always, I’m sure the clubs will put on a terrific day and their willingness to support days like this is greatly appreciated. Special thanks to our leagues key partners Bendigo Bank, Yarra Valley Water, Yarra Valley Racing, Yarra Valley Motor Group, Aurora Cafe Lilydale, Cold Rock Lilydale, TLA Puma, Coldstream Brewery, Glenbrae Signs and Bluegum. Danny Ryan (FDM) and Cameron Hutchison, AFL Yarra Ranges Operations manager, have put in a power of hard

work to develop and promote this year’s program and have both been the driving force in today’s proceedings. Thank you to Gayle Seeger for her assistance with the Netball Trials and organising the player apparel. A huge thank you to our coaching groups who continue to invest in our representative programs. Senior football coach Danny Ryan and his assistants Greg Spence, Brendan Donavon, Chris Goodlet and Mick McGrath. Netball coaches Kaitlyn Black in Open and Latoya Wards in 17/U with assistants Greg and Jade Heinrich. Under-19 football coach Brett Fisher and assistants, Dean Toohey, Jimbo Matin and Steve Goodie. The time and effort by these people is crucial for the success of the program and we thank them for their ongoing contribution. Congratulations to today’s umpiring panel that have been selected for today’s matches, a deserved recognition to your performances at league level. Best of luck to all teams today and we hope you enjoy what promises to be a fantastic day of community sport. Aaron Bailey AFL Yarra Ranges RGM
