AFL South East WELCOME TO SEASON 2018 On behalf of the AFL South East Commission I wish everyone involved in the Mornington Peninsula Nepean Football League (MPNFL) and the South East Football Netball League (SEFNL) a successful 2018 season It has been an eventful summer to say the least in the region. For the first time in many years, the MPNFL will return to a divisional structure, with seven clubs from the former Peninsula competition and three from Nepean now comprising the Chisholm Division 1. The balance of Peninsula and Nepean clubs will participate in the Bendigo Bank Division 2. The Commission’s preferred vision was to have a threedivisional competition also involving MPNFL and SEFNL Clubs. This would have provided even more competitive balance, reduced costs for clubs and a potential point of entry for new clubs. However, this was rejected by MPNFL clubs, which exercised their right in accordance with their Rules to block the strategy. SEFNL will now pursue an alternative divisional model beyond 2018. Nonetheless we have an exciting season in prospect. Reigning premiers Frankston YCW and Sorrento will clash in a mouth watering clash in Round 1. One scribe described this as the most anticipated game in 30 years. It will be the first time these two power-house clubs have met for premiership points since 1989. At the other end of the scale there are several clubs in Division 2 which have not played finals for some time. The opportunity exists for them to rebuild and see some September action this year. In all likelihood one club which has not experienced premiership glory for many years will do so in 2018 and advance to the top division in 2019. There was a burst of publicity several weeks ago relating to country competitions. We are very fortunate in the South East region to have two very strong senior leagues, which are governed under the AFL regional model. At one end of the scale we have clubs which are capable of developing players who move comfortably into TAC Cup, AFL and VFL clubs. In recent times, players such as Hunter Clarke, Luke Davies-Uniacke, Nick Coffield and many others have progressed from this region to AFL ranks. At the other end of the scale former AFL players are attracted to our region due to the strength of competitions. This year we welcome players such as Jarrod Grant, Mitch Hallahan and Matthew Boyd into our ranks for the first time. Former Melbourne players Luke Tapscott and Chris Dawes will again spearhead Sorrento’s charge for a final’s berth and Travis Tuck will add further strength to reigning SEFNL premier Berwick. PLAYER PAYMENTS Clubs have been advised that in its second year of operation the Player Payment threshold for all senior clubs in the region will be $150,000.
While some leniency was applied in 2017, in 2018 strict compliance will be enforced. This is essential for the fairness of the competition, but also a way of assisting the sustainability of clubs by trying to curb the extravagant spending by clubs. It is anticipated that the current threshold will reduce over time. INTER LEAGUE While there is a clear focus on round 1 over the Easter weekend (particularly for MPNFL Division 1 clubs), the Leagues are also preparing for their respective Inter League matches in May. The number-3 ranked league in the State, the MPNFL, will take on the Northern Football Netball League at Cramer Street, Preston, coached by Chris Holcombe. We will also have an Under 19 representative game on that day, coached by Josh Moore. Our women will also get the chance to play representative football for the first time when our regional competition (South East Women’s Football) will field a team against Northern, with our team coached by Megan Snart. SEFNL, in an ironic match up, will be pitted against Yarra Ranges at Holm Park, Beaconsfield in a curtain raiser to a Richmond v Sandringham VFL game. Former Berwick premiership coach Rhys Nielson will take charge. NETBALL One of the advantages our region has over neighbouring metropolitan leagues is the benefit clubs derive from a strong netball focus. During our football review, it became evident to AFLSE that the close relationship between football and netball was a key to the viability of clubs as a whole. Accordingly, AFLSE has appointed a dedicated netball operations manager in Samantha Downie to oversee netball across the region. Sam is an experienced netball person, having played, coached, administered and umpired during her long-term involvement in the sport. Sam’s focus will be to manage the MPNFL and SEFNL netball competitions with a particular emphasis on strategies around participation, equalisation, competitiveness and umpiring. CLUB SUPPORT PROGRAMS AFLSE would also like to thank the Melbourne Racing Club Foundation for the continued funding of the Club Support Program. The Club Support Program was rolled out in 2016 with all 22 MPNFL clubs receiving access to the Sports Chaplaincy Australia Club Care Access and SALT Education program. In addition to the Club Access program, the 2018 program will see the delivery of Mental Health and WellBeing sessions. Further details will be sent to clubs in the next week. To everyone involved in our football and netball clubs, I wish you all good luck for season 2018. John Anderson Region General Manager AFL South East

AFL Vic Country AFL VIC COUNTRY WELCOME TO SEASON 2018 As the cooler months start to creep in and daylight savings comes to an end, excitement is brewing across country Victoria for the return of community football. Whether you are playing, coaching, umpiring, volunteering or cheering on your team from the sidelines, the month of April brings with it a feeling of optimism and anticipation for what lies ahead for season 2018. The rapid growth in female football has continued to reach new heights, with the establishment of 392 new teams in 2017 bringing the total number of female teams to 747 across the state. We look forward to seeing more females pull on the boots and showcase their skills throughout country Victoria the year. Season 2018 will see the roll out of a number of new initiatives, including the implementation of the AFL’s new NAB AFL Auskick 2.0 program, an expanded Victorian FIDA Football League competition for players with an intellectual disability, as well as the acquisition of seven dedicated full time V/Line Umpire Academy Program Managers who are now responsible for driving umpire development regionally. The work carried out by Region Commissions, in conjunction with leagues and clubs, to embrace these initiatives, along with the many other programs conducted across the state is vital to ensuring country football is in good stead for continued growth in the future.
For the second year in a row, the highest ranked country representative match will be played at the MCG as part of the 2018 AFL Country Game between Geelong and Essendon. The Ballarat Football Netball League and Goulburn Valley League (7 v 8) will run out on the hallowed turf in season 2018, while the leagues’ Under 19 representative matches will be played at Punt Road Oval. In addition, the current number-one-ranked Geelong Football Netball League will be looking to secure its third straight Community Championships title when it lines up against the Eastern Football League at Etihad Stadium. The match will be a curtain raiser to the Round 9 AFL game between St. Kilda and Collingwood on Saturday night. This is a fantastic occasion for some of community football’s best senior players to run out and showcase their skills on the game’s biggest stage and provide the opportunity for city and country football fans to come together and celebrate all that is good in country football. Last but not least I would like to wish all players, coaches, umpires, volunteers and administrators the best of luck for the season ahead- I hope it is a successful one for all involved.
AFL Victoria Country Football & Development Manager Stephen O’Donohue
Country football’s contribution to the national game was strengthened last year, with 26 male and six female players from regional Victoria drafted to AFL and AFLW clubs. This achievement is a credit to both the talent pathway programs and the local community clubs which continue to provide the foundation for the next generation of stars to reach the elite level. In other football news, AFL Victoria is delighted to announce the return of the WorkSafe AFL Victoria Community Championships at the MCG.

Footy Preview - Division 1 By David Nagel Mix the fear of the great unknown with the sweet scent of September and you get something very special indeed – like a contest 30 years in the making between Frankston YCW and Sorrento at Frankston Park. The Easter Sunday showdown between the Stonecats and Sharks pits the two great teams of the modern era in sporting combat on the ultimate playing field. The Stonecats, the seven-time Peninsula champions of the last eight years, against the Sharks who possess a stunning record of six Nepean premierships in the last decade. What a way to launch the restructured Chisholm MPNFL Division One season. And to add even more flavour to an already epic contest, the teams will play for the “Toe Punt Shield”, recognising the outstanding and continued contribution of media icon Andrew ‘Toe Punt’ Kelly, currently in the biggest fight of his life against cancer. The perpetual trophy will be accompanied by the ‘Andrew Kelly’ Medal for best on ground in this and future matches between the clubs. Evenly normally calm folk, like YCW coach Wayne Capp, can’t help but caught up in the excitement of it all. “This is no disrespect to the teams we’ve been playing against, but the simple fact is we haven’t come up against a team like Sorrento that also has an incredible record in big games and finals before, “ Capp said. ”It really does feel like a final. “I have that nervous anxiety that I normally have in September and we’ve prepared as if it is a final…it’s going to be a really hot start to the match.” Capp has left no stone unturned in finding out as much as he can about this weekend’s opponent. “It feels like I’ve spent most of the summer watching video of Sorrento and talking to captains and coaches from clubs that have played against them over the last few years,” he said. “The feedback is they have a super-strong midfield that gets its hands on the ball first and they’ve got some exciting forwards like (Chris) Dawes, (Leigh) Poholke and (Nick) Corp that we really need to keep an eye on.
“Nullifying their supply from the midfield is going to be key to getting the job done.” But Capp said he would also back his midfield in against the Sharks. “We’ll be going head to head through the middle of the ground, they’ll be no tagging from us, because I know we’ve got a midfield that can match it with the best,” he said. “It’s just a matter of finding the right balance.” The Stonecats will go in minus two of their great servants in Tony Lester and Craig Nankervis – both retired – while star VFL forward Anthony Bruhn has changed his home club to Collegians in the Amateurs. In comes Josh Patullo, a ruck/forward from Leongatha, creating an interesting dynamic with champion tall Ashley Eames and the emerging Macklin Raine. As Capp mentioned earlier, Sorrento has a plethora of goal-scoring options at its disposal. Former Collingwood and Melbourne star Dawes has an imposing presence, while the class of Poholke and Corp has been complemented by the finishing skills of coach Luke Tapscott and James Hallahan. And the Sharks have scored one of the recruiting coups of the off-season, luring Mitch Hallahan south after 20 games with the Gold Coast Suns. The 2013 J.J. Liston Trophy winner with Box Hill will bring a hard-edge to an already talented midfield. Capp said the Stonecats were thrilled and privileged to be part of such a huge game of footy. “It’s very exciting for the club with a massive build up during the pre-season and we’re pumped to be part of such a big game of footy against Sorrento,“ Capp said. “All the talk around town has been about this game and how it’s been 30 years in the making and that just makes it all the more exciting. “As coaches we try and play down the significance of games and try and keep a lid on things but there’s no point even trying in this case. It’s a huge game for both clubs and I know our boys are really looking forward to the challenge.”

Footy Preview - Division 1 In the past both of these have known their best will be good enough, but this contest brings the great uncertainty of sport back into the equation. Rarely during a home and away season do the fourpremiership points pale into insignificance, but in this case, there is far more on the line. Two powerhouse clubs in the ultimate battle for the title of kings of peninsula football. The Stonecats have won nine finals in a row since 2013 and never fail to produce their best on the biggest stage…they’ll get the job done in a classic. Strap yourselves in ladies and gentlemen…it’s going to be one hell of a ride!
Frankston YCW champion Ash Eames will relish the challenge of taking on Sorrento on Sunday. Frankston Bombers and Mt Eliza give us our first taste of the new divisional structure when Greg Beck Oval comes alive on Good Friday. The Bombers, along with Rosebud and Sorrento, have been at the pointy end of the Nepean league ladder and have thoroughly deserved their promotion to the newlyformed top bracket of football. Coach Beau Muston will roll out his prized recruit Jarrad Grant, a 192-centimetre (6ft 4in in the old) Bombers junior who has played 95 games with the Western Bulldogs and Gold Coast Suns over the last nine years. The Bombers have lured several new faces to the club, including Ben Northover (Warragul Industrials) and Waide Symes (Crib Point), but it is the impact of Grant that will be the focus of most attention. The Redlegs have had a high turnover with the quartet of Dave Barton, Rohan Heasley, Justin Van Unen and Sam Wettenhall all leaving for Wandin in the Yarra Ranges.
8
Coburg midfielder Blake Mullane leads the replacements with Jordan Moncrieff and Collingwood rookie Mitch McCarthy. Fish Creek premiership players Cal Park and Blaine Coates are others to keep an eye on. Bonbeach and Edi-Asp square off in a game that will see more new recruits line up than at Puckapunyal each year. The Eagles went down to the Sharks by 40 points in last year’s preliminary final but have gone hard at the recruiting table, securing the services of Melbourne power-forward Liam Hulett. His signing is complemented by the inclusion of Noble Park-pair Sam Monaghan and Tim Kelly, while North Ringwood’s Aaron Johns and the silky skills of Doveton onballer Lachie Batten will also serve the Eagles well. But last year’s beaten grand finalists, the Sharks, have also had a busy off-season. They will improve courtesy of former Adelaide Crow and Sandringham Dragon Myke Cook, while key-position player Joe Fisscher will keep opposition defenders under notice. Mitchell Gent is another quality player from Noble Park that will make a difference. With all these new faces, this one will be an intriguing Good Friday pipe opener. The Saturday timeslot sees a traditional clash between Pines and Seaford at Eric Bell Reserve and a newly-formed rivalry emerge between Rosebud and Mornington at Olympic Oval. Pines pushed Bonbeach all the way to the wire in the first semi-final last year and will look to build from within in 2018. Coach Paddy Swayn has lured dual best and fairest winner Nick Wilcox from Nilma-Darnum, former Stingray Khyal Jacobson from Beleura, while Tom McDermott will add some pace on the wing from Thorpdale. “We will need our best team on the park to be competitive but we’ll get better as the year goes on, we’ve got a very young list,” Swayn said. “We’ve been good early and then fallen away recently but I think we will reverse that trend this year.” Ruckman Dylan Smillie is a big loss for the Pythons while Tim Bongetti (suspension), Luke Potts (hand) and Aaron Edwards (ACL) will all have delayed starts to the season. Seaford will be much stronger around the contest with the inclusion of 200-centimetre ruckman Matt Terech from East Malvern, while Bunyip’s Zac Vansittart and Devon Meadows’ ball magnet Curtis Barker will make a difference at the coal face. Former junior Mitch White has signed on with Casey, with Seaford his home club. And intrigue surrounds the second Saturday contest with Mornington taking a rare trip south to take on newly-promoted Rosebud. With Chelsea, Karingal and Langwarrin now in division two, the Bulldogs start 2018 with a returning great as their coach in Simon Goosey, but also facing the reality
www.aflsoutheast.com.au
Footy Preview - Division 1 that they are the lowest ranked former Peninsula league club in the competition. Goosey’s understanding of the game and knowledge of structures has been instrumental in past success stories at both Mornington and Cranbourne. We can expect to see an organised and much more competitive Bulldogs outfit this season. The nuggetty Max Gearon (Cranbourne) is a contested beast around the stoppages, while Tasmanian Max Kleverkamp and former Stingray Jack Kerr will add plenty to the Doggies this year. As for Rosebud, well it has just gone about its business quietly during the off-season. The Buds have picked up Rhys Pierce from Karingal and Werribee key-defender Josh Harris, balanced out by the loss of Ryan Spooner to Nyora. Rosebud coach Adrian McBean can’t wait to get the season underway. “Like all pre-seasons they seem to get longer and longer, but numbers have been consistent and we have got the balance right between getting miles in our legs and doing some match-simulation sessions with Somerville,” he said. “With only two changes to the senior list we will continue to develop from within which has kept the club in good stead in the past.” The time for talk is over gentlemen…let’s bring it on!

Carl Packs a Punch Carl Fletcher may have packed many personal belongings in his move down from Sydney, but his passion for the game and dedication to the growth and development of umpiring is set to be his most precious cargo of all. It’s time to blow the whistle on one of AFL South East’s newest recruits who has the huge responsibility of overseeing a fresh and regional approach to umpiring in 2018. Fletcher – AFL South East Regional Director of Umpiring - brings an exceptional record of on-and-off-field excellence to the table. As a field umpire he took charge of the AFL Sydney Premier Division Grand Finals of 2013/14 and was voted the AFL Sydney Umpire of the Year in both 2014/15 by the Premier Division coaches. He gets what elite level umpiring should look like – but at the same time has his focus firmly fixed on the growth and development of the third team on the park. Fletcher’s first eight years of a decade-long stint with AFL NSW/ACT was performed under the title of Umpiring Development Coordinator. It was there he would oversee the growth, coaching, management and development of umpires within AFL Sydney Juniors and Northern NSW leagues.
He led the growth of Sydney Juniors umpiring, with 500 umpires and 30 volunteer umpire coaches under his auspice when he left AFL NSW/ACT at the end of 2017. For the last two years he has been Football Operations Manager for AFL Sydney Juniors, overseeing the management of the competition which included 50 clubs and more than 500 teams. But umpiring, well it’s his first love! “The thing I love most about umpiring is to watch a young person come into the game, with no experience at all, and watch them grow in confidence and competence to the point where they can take control of a senior game of football,” Fletcher said. “And the way I look at it, being an umpire is just like being a player at a football club, we come together as a family and community of people who just love their footy. Umpiring is great fun and develops communication and leadership skills as well.” Regarding his new role with AFL South East, there’ll be no side-stepping or running backwards to enter the contest. “I am really excited about being in this role and can’t wait for the year ahead,” he said. “I am looking forward to working with all AFL South East staff, clubs, umpires and sponsors to set up effective

structures, programs and an umpiring pathway that will grow and develop umpiring.” AFL South East Region General Manager John Anderson said Fletcher’s role was crucial to the ongoing development of umpiring in the region. “Carl’s appointment starts a new era whereby AFL South East now oversees all umpiring in the region, which was formerly the domain of South East Juniors and the Southern Umpires Association (SUA),”Anderson said. “AFL South East’s agreement with the SUA allows us to create a regional umpiring department which services all affiliated senior and junior leagues in the region. Carl’s appointment is integral in the development of umpires across all age groups. “I would also like to thank the executive of the SUA for their co-operation in formulating this ground-breaking agreement and they will continue to support umpiring across the south east region.” If you are interested in umpiring in 2018 please contact Carl Fletcher via umpiring@aflse.com.au or 0425 256 504. Carl Fletcher has umpiring running through his veins and is keen to make a mark in AFL South East.

Footy Notes Can’t wait to see how the Bombers fit into the new league structure, I know that Beau is super confident, as players and fans may need Google maps or the Melways to find unfamiliar venues. Hearing that Craigy, Woody, Marty, Bronco & Rocky are forming a specialist coaching group to help the young players who have never played on these Peninsula grounds and might benefit from their experience. They will tell you how they played each ground, where they kicked goals from, where their best marks were taken and detail B&F votes scored on these decks. They will be known as the FIGJAMS, Footy, IQ, Grounds, Judgement, All Matches. Beau’s optimism comes off the back of great recruiting, solid preseason & excellent praccy match form. Jarred Grant needs no introduction & is a welcome return whilst the guy in the backline wearing 3 & looking like Sam Drake, is Sam Drake. Welcome home big fella. Jake Greely, Ben Northover, Brandon Tilley & Wayde Symes will all be super in the Red’nBlack & will add to an already strong unit. Good luck to all today & lets turn a Good Friday into a great one with 3 strong wins. Have a great day & GO BOMBERS

Ahhhh, the leaves are turning and Olympic Park is lush and green – it must be time to play our favorite game FOOTY! We also welcome Mornington to Olympic Park for the first time since 2004 as we embark on the re-boot of MPNFL Divisional football. Our elevation to Division 1 recognises the success our club has had over recent years and is a strong affirmation of our community based program. Our facilities are also undergoing a much needed facelift and there is some pain in this before the gains are to be welcomed. However with challenge comes additional strength and our coaches, players, committee & volunteers are to be congratulated for taking these changes in their stride and redoubling their commitments over the summer with a very full preseason. Adrian, Luke and Matt have worked tirelessly to prepare the boys for a big year. Congratulations to Matt Baker on his appointment to the senior coaching panel and who will be guidling our U19s. Further additions to the Club include Senior Assistant Rik Batten, a Rosebud local, and two notable players Rhys Pierce and Josh Harris. Welcome boys and we wish you well. To Captain Greg who has really taken to the challenges of 2018 and our boys on the park we wish a fantastic season – get right behind them! Finally a big thank you to the local businesses that continue to throw their support behind our Club through their sponsorship and to our loyal band of volunteers who enable our players to take the field and court. Go Buds!

A message from the President Round 1 – Frankston YCW V Sorrento Footy is back and after a busy off season with all the froth and bubble that goes on, round one is now upon us. Today, after 30 odd years, we play the Sorrento Sharks at Frankston Park. This game has generated significant hype and buzz due to the previous success of both clubs and the length of time since we have played each other. With both sides winning their respective premierships last year, we are in for a treat today. Some like to refer to it as The Clash of the Titans!” However more importantly, in my view, is what both sides are playing for today. The “TOEPUNT SHIELD” and the “Andrew Kelly” medal for Best on Ground. This trophy was struck by both clubs, in recognition of Andrew “TOEPUNT” Kelly’s outstanding and continued, contribution to our local game. It will be a perpetual trophy between the Stonecats and the Sharks.

Footy Notes “TOEPUNT” has been reporting and broadcasting on our local game for 30 years. I know that “TOEPUNT” is very excited about this game and he has been doing promotional work on this game from his hospital bed! Check out GAMEFACE I wish to acknowledge and thank C&D Trophies of Langwarrin, who generously manufactured and supplied the shield and medal, they are at 307 Cranbourne Road Langwarrin 97894979. Their service and product is second to none and I could not recommend them highly enough. Finally today as this special game takes place, spare some thoughts and a prayer for Andrew and his family as he continues his battle. As we all know he is bravely battling cancer and I was so happy that we, at Stonecats and the Sharks, were able to come together and acknowledge TOEPUNTS contribution to local footy. His contribution to our local game over many years is huge. I know the support and love of the local football community has given him great encouragement. “Go Stoners “ Michael LAMB President , Frankston YCW FNC
Mt Eliza Welcome Redlegs fans, sponsors and players to the 2018 premiership season. Our off-season has brought with it a truck load of positive change. We welcome our new coaching appointees in Nathan Clayton – Development Team, and Paul Goonan – Under 19’s. We also welcome a myriad of new playing recruits, fresh faced assistant coaching staff and our wonderful new family’s to our proud club. We thank everyone under the guidance of Mic Dunne and Troy Shannon for their efforts to date and look forward to embracing the challenges that lay in wait. A special mention to all of our committed sponsors Led by our major sponsors Idetect Group, Hewison Private Wealth and Kikki K.
Sorrento
It’s finally here, round 1 and aren’t we ready for it after a busy off season! We’ve had arrival of new players, departures and retirements of club champions, appointments and terminations of coaches and all this before a ball’s bounced. Then we hear the news of Andrew Toe Punt Kelly and his battle and suddenly things are put back into perspective. Toey from all at Sorrento we wish you all the best in your fight ahead. Hopefully today we can put on a great spectacle in the battle for the Toe Punt cup. To the footy and Easter Sunday presents us with one of the most anticipated battles in recent memory. Two clubs that have had successful eras come up against each other for the first time since the late 80’s, and no one knows what’s going to happen. It’s a move up in divisions for the Sorrento Sharks, will they compete with the power clubs from Premier division? And what about YCW, do they still have the hunger after so many flags? All will be revealed today in what should be 2 cracking games of local football. All the best to our new coaches, leaders and players today, we hope it’s the beginning of an exciting new era. It’s a mighty challenge first up but we know you’ll embrace it. We’d also like to give a big welcome to all sponsors, members and supporters for season 2018. Your continued support is greatly appreciated. Thought of the week: If 2 vegans are arguing, is it still considered a beef!

Seaford What a great way to start the season with the short trip up the road to take on one of our great rivals in Pines at Eric Bell Reserve. It’s been a busy off-season for the club with our traditional ground, RF Miles Reserve, being used as a work site for the level crossing removal project, meaning we have machinery and equipment taking over our famous playing field. With this in mind, and in conjunction with the Seaford Junior Football Club, we will be playing our home games over the next two years at Belvedere Reserve. Our strong relationship with our juniors will grow even stronger as we work together to make the move a success. There will be free entry to all Seaford home games this year. As we head into the season it seems the appropriate time to thank our wonderful volunteers who have worked tirelessly to make our club as prepared as what it is today. We welcome our new recruits to the club and wish them well as they look to push the club to the pointy end of the ladder. Best wishes to everyone involved at the club. Go Tigers!

Footy Notes Pines
Welcome to Pines FNC Sponsors, members, players and life members for the opening game against Seaford FNC. We also welcome our opposition club as they start their year absent from their home ground for the first time since anyone can remember. We trust it works out for Seaford and their following. With the first of our luncheons to host today, we expect this to be a day of entertainment with something for everyone. Darren ‘Chuck’ Berry as guest speaker may have a view on any or all of the contemporary list of shenanigans in cricket. Take your pick on that front. The football should be fantastic with not much fanfare from either club in profiling the teams, all 3 games expected to be full of surprises. Netballers have broadened their appeal, so much so that they have reserves awaiting the chance to play in any of the 4 grades. And after the game, relax in the rooms with a beverage and a tune from the dulcet tones of Chris Swayn and his accompaniment. For those entertaining others please check out the well stocked canteen, or the bacon and egg bar - that converts to a hamburger bar at noon. Outside bar is stocked to the brim and ready to cater for a broad set of likes. This year our emphasis is all about participation. We encourage anyone interested in the club to pick up
a prospectus and take notice of the planned events, sponsorship packages and membership to assess the value of being part of this club, now and for the coming years. Entertainment and events are planned around everyone, not just the players and committee. The centurions club is one not to miss with 70% of places gone, so see the President quickly if you don¹t want to miss out on the entertaining activities (where your team might be the entertainment). We have a newly introduced communications framework, aimed at ensuring Pines members and sponsors are at the centre of our information provisions. Please help by ensuring we have all your communication details, including email. If in doubt please see the Comms and Marketing team headed up by Darren Ash. There¹s been a huge amount of work in the background over the summer, with thanks to Paddy Swayn and the coaching team, they¹ve been able to advance the football program which has attracted attention and an immediate reward with under19 numbers not seen since the 80¹s. The development in the young players is exciting, combined with our experience, led by Paul Scanlon, fresh from a league B&F, and a preliminary final with Nigthcliff in the NTFL, we are all keen to see the season start. To the committee, thanks for all the hard work, there¹s more to come, but for now, enjoy the ride.

Interleague Destiny of the MPNFL Sharks in very good hands
There may be two new divisions in the Mornington Peninsula Nepean Football League in 2018 but new interleague coach Chris Holcombe is confident a united front will help the MPNFL topple the Northern Football League in this year’s WorkSafe AFL Victoria Community Championships. The 39-year-old replaces John Hynes at the helm of the Sharks, with the former Mornington coach hoping to capitalise on a close bond that has been built within the group when they take to the Preston City Oval on Saturday 19 May. At stake, a chance to rise back into the top-two rankings and take on the might of either Geelong or Eastern for the title of number-one league in the state in 2019. The Sharks went down to Geelong by 22 points at the MCG last year after defeating Northern by five goals at Rye in 2016. Holcombe is hoping to repeat the dose against Northern this time around. “It’s very exciting, Hynesy has done a great job over the past couple of years getting a squad that’s close and bonded well together and that’s been sort of the key to their success,” Holcombe said. “I’m very excited to be a part of that group and hopefully build on it.” Holcombe has coached Mornington for the last four years, making grand final day on back-to-back occasions in 2014-15 before eventually succumbing to the might of Frankston YCW. “Before that, I obviously played a lot of football, drafted to Hawthorn when I was a kid, played a lot of footy at Frankston Dolphins and then went back and won a couple of premierships with Mornington.” The number-80 pick in the 1996 AFL Draft said Hynes and his coaching staff had left a lasting legacy, overcoming the ever-present challenge of being competitive on the interleague stage. “I think they’ve probably overcome a lot of the challenges, a lot of it was buy in, in the past, the players not wanting to compete for the Mornington Peninsula, and I think that’s been arrested by the group over the last couple of years,” Holcombe said. “Just really wanting to be out there, representing the league, and that’s probably been the greatest achievement that Hynesy is going to leave. And hopefully we just continue that through, that’s the key to it.” Combining familiar faces with a new breed of stars is very important according to the Sharks new coach. “I think you need to keep a core group together, especially those guys who have performed, they deserve to be there again, but on top of that, to go forward, I think you really need to bring some new players through,” he said. “Some guys who have been playing good footy, knocking on the door, anything that is going to help build that list
through to hopefully getting a win.” Holcombe is one of two coaching appointments made by AFL South East, with Rye senior coach Josh Moore entrusted with the task of leading the Sharks’ under 19s into battle against Northern’s finest junior talent. Moore, in his fourth year at Rye, has high expectations that his young squad will gel quickly. “I guess it will be a little bit different, but when you get to the highest standard possible I think the kids will be nice and professional,” Moore said. “Professionalism is going to be key and we expect the players to be like that on the track and on match day. We’ll be picking the team on form, we’re going to have a massive squad of about 50 or 60 players, so the players that commit, train hard and are in form will be the players that get picked in the team.” The appointment of Holcombe and Moore came after a thorough process led by AFL South East Football Operations Manager Haydn Parsons, who engaged AFLSE Coaching Mentor Brent Clinnick to assist with the task at hand. “Brent was fantastic in helping to devise some key criteria for the role and we would like to thank him greatly for his efforts,” Parsons said, before praising Hynes and his coaching staff for their dedication to the MPNFL’s cause. “We’d like to thank John Hynes and his coaching group for their commitment and dedication to the program over a number of years,” he said. “And we’re really pleased and excited to have two enthusiastic and high calibre coaches in Chris and Josh to be taking on the challenge of the Interleague Program.” The Northern Football League has seen major success in the competitiveness of its competition since reverting to a three-division structure in 2011. A remarkable 17 of its 27 clubs have tasted premiership success in the last seven years.
Former Mornington coach Chris Holcombe will lead the MPNFL into battle against Northern.

Chewy sticks to his guns By David Nagel Reigning EV Shade Medallist Paul “Chewy’ Scanlon is now in his 40s but don’t expect that to slow down the Pines strongman in MPNFL Division One this season. The football journeyman is as well prepared as he’s ever been to take on the new challenges thrown down by the likes of Frankston, Rosebud and Sorrento – and the elite midfielders already in the competition. He has spent the summer travelling to the far north of the country, plying his trade in the heat and humidity of the Northern Territory. “I fly up there on the 9.40 flight on a Friday morning, go to the gym and play on a Saturday and then come home Sunday,” he said. “For me it’s the best way to prepare for a season, playing footy has to be the best form of footy training I would have thought.” Scanlon rounded out his preparations with a recent trip to Bali. “I know my body better than I ever have but It’s just really important for me to get away and clear my head before the start of a season,” he said. “I basically do nothing over there, I’m not a big drinker or anything like that so it’s just a matter of recharging the batteries.” Scanlon has had an amazing football journey, starting at Bundoora he moved to the Preston Bullants in the VFL before making his move to Seymour. “There was about 10 of us who became mates and we won three Goulburn Valley League flags between 2005 and 2007,” he said. “We lost the fourth one in 2008, then I went to Shepparton, back to the VFL with the Bendigo Bombers and played a bit with Northcote Park.” Scanlon has now found himself a new home, now in his third year at Eric Bell Reserve he has slotted in nicely. “It’s a great club, one of the best I’ve played at with some great kids coming through and Paddy is one of the most thorough coaches I’ve played under,” he said.
“He’s fantastic with his time across the whole group and doesn’t play favourites with anyone. “ Scanlon believes the Pythons can build on their fourth placing from last year -finishing with the second-best percentage behind Frankston YCW - and challenge the big guns of the competition. “We need a more even spread across the board, but I think we have the players that can improve that five to 10 percent and become key players as the year unfolds,” he said. “We’ve got some very exciting young talent and a good mix of experience as well. We’re still a chance of being up there and with the new teams coming in it’s given the competition a breath of fresh air.”
Paul ‘Chewy’ Scanlon is ready and recharged for the 2018 Chisholm MPNFL Division One season.

Netball Preview - Division 1 And we all start from scratch By David Nagel Will Seaford be the team to step up and challenge reigning premier Edithvale-Aspendale or will the Eagles prove too strong once again in MPNFL Division One Netball? Edi-Asp won an absolute classic grand final against runaway ladder-leaders Karingal last year, winning 46-45 in a premiership decider for the ages. And with Karingal now gone to Division Two, Edi-Asp would appear to have the front running to make it back to back crowns. But Seaford coach Megan Dell has recruited wisely, adding some true grit to the defensive end of the court. Her sister Tracey Dell and Kara Hargrave, two of the premier defenders in the South East Football Netball League (SEFNL) with powerhouse Narre Warren, have joined the club, and their experience as a unit is sure to prove invaluable as the season rolls on. Both have figured prominently in voting for the SEFNL Team of the Year over the last few years and come to Seaford with outstanding reputations. The core group that took Seaford to a preliminary final last year, such as Tayla Robertson, Rachel Cosans, Jenna Foot, Ashleigh Mitchener, Chelsea Robertson, Nichelle Liepa and Claire Rottier, will gain great confidence from having such high-quality defenders in their midst. Throw in youngsters like Alesina Toleafoa and Hayley Dewhurst and things look set for a promising year. “We’ve got a really good vibe going at the moment and we fell like we have a solid core group with strength all over the court,” said coach Megan Dell. “All the girls have worked really hard on their games and we can’t wait for the season to begin.” Seaford takes on Pines who will be keen to improve after winning two games last year. Players like Ashlee Boyle and coach Brierly Chase won’t let Seaford get away with too much on the weekend. In what’s sure to be an emotional start to the game, Edi-Asp travels to Bonbeach in a game dedicated to the memory of much-loved club member Stacee MacInnes. The Edi-Asp club notes this week say it all. The start of the netball season now brings back memories of a beautiful, vivacious young lady who passed away two years ago. Stacee was taken from us suddenly and this week we pay our respect to the MacInnes family and fondly remember Stacee’s warm personality and infectious smile. All players on court will be wearing purple ribbons Stacee’s favourite colour - and the Best on Court in A grade will be presented with the Stacee MacInnes Medal.

Thank you to the Bonbeach FNC for joining us in the support of Stacee’s Round. To Ross, Ros, Caris, Holly, Bec and the whole MacInnes family, our thoughts are always with you. What a great show of respect from both clubs. Frankston Bombers and Mt Eliza will take to the court for the first meeting between these two clubs in many a year. Both teams finished fourth in their respective leagues last year so an even battle looks likely. The Bombshells gained great service from players like Sarah Muston, Polly Morris and Louise Brittain in 2017 and coach Bev Ashauer will be hoping for similarly consistent seasons this time around. Carly Webster will have Mt Eliza keen for a fast start to the season with Bridget Ryan and Ellie Russo players to keep an eye on. In other games a new-look Sorrento outfit takes on Frankston YCW, while Rosebud and Mornington will both be keen for four points after narrowly missing out on finals last year. Sorrento has one of the all-time greats of Australian netball in its ranks, in Shelley O’Donnell, while Danni Taylor is another player of absolute class. Everyone will be keeping an eagle eye on Sorrento in the early part of the season. At Rosebud, coach Nicole Hadgkiss will be looking for big seasons from Bethany Leach, Lauren Robinson and Courtney McLennan, while the Bulldogs have Tess Cooper, Georgia Hunter and Candace Page to keep the navy blues honest. It all points to a great first round of MPNFL Division One netball.
Edi-Asp scored a memorable one-goal victory over Karingal in last year’s grand final. Who will step up and challenge this year?

Hello to 2018 in what is sure to be an action packed, competitive and enjoyable netball season. The Stonekittens finished off the 2017 season as premiers in both C & D grades, albeit by the smallest of margins. With three premierships now achieved as a netball club over the past 2 years (all won by just 1 point!) we are looking to build on this success in 2018. We are delighted that we have been able to retain Head Coach Jessica Tobin for another season to lead the charge. She will be supported by a strong coaching team consisting of Lyshae Barry, Lisa Wade, Carly Camilleri, Louise Meagher, Sheree Bellert and Lauren Barry. The first round will see us venture into unknown territory as we face new opponent Sorrento. Player numbers will be a little short due to the Easter long weekend however we are still expecting four great games of netball. Thank you to our new major sponsor TwentyThree Projects as well the continued support from long term sponsor, Deeki. Good luck to all the teams and we look forward to welcoming you all to Jubilee Park throughout the season!
It feels just like yesterday we waved goodbye to finals netball and next thing you know here comes Round 1. We take on a new opponent in our first game when we play Frankston Bombers on the Thursday of the Easter weekend. After a solid 5 months of training including fitness, beach and court sessions as well as trials the Redlegs are ready to roll. We’ve played 2 great practice matches, firstly against Pearcedale with wins across all grades as well as a round robin against Hastings & Mornington with some great wins also. We’ve seen a lot of new young talent come on board over the summer period and the girls have been training with great intensity and determination. In 2018 we will have 3 coaches on our panel. Carly Webster remains as our Head Coach & will manage our A and B grade squad, Jo Camilleri will coach the C grade team while Katelyn McNamara will coach the D grade team for the first time. We have also been lucky enough to welcome on board Pippa Hanson as our Netball Director, Pippa is already doing a fantastic job of bringing the club together and providing amazing administrative support for the netball department. 2018 looks exciting for the Redlegs - we look to represent strongly in finals again and chase that sought after premiership once again. UNITED - DEDICATED - STRONG

Another season is upon us already and gee whiz did that sneak up on us quickly. One minute we were enjoying Christmas pud & the next we were in pre-season sweating bullets cutting laps around the oval. Welcome the buds, sharks & bombs to our division. They say fresh meat is a Tigers favourite treat. Excited to see many of our familiar tiggies faces return but also great to have some new girls on board. Recruitment criteria includes; - Being a good time - Attending social functions - Rock up to netball? Changes in coaching department this year with Meagan “Super Coach” Dell heading up our A Grade Squad & superstar Mitchener taking on the C babes. A Grade – Meagan Dell B Grade – Tayla Robertson C Grade – Ashleigh Mitchener D Grade – Michelle Liepa On a serious note, although we are unable to occupy our spiritual football home this season due to the Level Crossing Removal at Seaford Road we are jumping out of a skins to have our football & netball co-located on match day for this season with the football men’s & women’s joining us down at East Road. No doubt we’ll have some more material for this column following our first social function (unofficially Fish & Chip Friday at Chelsea’s house) but until then… GO TIGES!
After loads of work by many the Netballers’ at Shark Park return to season 2018 with a bigger list of sponsors both loyal and new. A new coaching team lead by Alana Schaeche, Shelly O”Donnell assisting her and Sophia Wickenden taking on the C and D grades. Joining them and the exisiting group are some new players to boost the ranks. It is great to see the Sorrento Community rally behind netballers’, our sponsors have made the changes possible and a huge thank you from all the players. Fitness training in the off season has been tough and fun and made most enjoyable by the support of Recreation Gym in Sorrento and the work of Penny Connelly. We are looking forward to a new competition and new teams to play. The big unknown as we have never played most of these teams before. Our training combinations and skills season pre-season are showing promising results. It will be fun to try out our new teams. The players are all keen to start. So we hope everyone hasn’t eaten too much chocolate today as we journey to play Frankston YCW, maybe the easter bunny might visit after the games! Goodluck for the season and GO SORRAS
Rosebud The Rosebud netballers have had one of their toughest pe-seasons to date, enlisting the skills of personal trainers ELITE fitness. Twice a week we have been running, jumping and sweating our way through interval circuit training and fitness testing. In addition, our A-Grade coach Nicole, has been running all grades through ball work and court plays to prepare us for a strong season. There has been a great vibe at the club in 2018 with all grades training as one for preseason. This will continue during a portion of training for the entirety of the season which we hope continues to build on our club unity. We have some great new talent coming up from our 2017 Under 15s and as with our football teams we will seek to strengthen our club by continuing to bring through these amazing young players who are committed to our Club and the local area. As we embark on this new challenge with a league change, we are excited to put on our dresses and represent the Rosebud Football Netball Club. 2018 will be a big challenge that we are excited to take on. Lets keep this dedication and support going for the rest of the year and watch all of this hard work pay off.

Downie has the pride and the passion If Samantha Downie can bring just half of the passion and commitment she has already given to netball to her new role with AFL South East – then the sport in this region is in very good hands.
Leadership would appear to run deep in the Downie bloodlines with Sam’s brother Michael captaining the Keysborough Football Club seniors in 2017 - and he was recently renamed skipper for this year.
Downie, or ‘Sam’ as most will get to know her, started her new role as the region’s Netball Operations Manager in late January, overseeing the running of the sport in both the MPNFL and South East Football Netball League.
Sam, who has stopped playing netball due to wear and tear on her knees, is looking forward to getting her hands dirty in her new role.
Downie will work alongside Haydn Parsons, the AFL South East Football Operations Manager, who adds the SEFNL clubs to his 2017 portfolio with the MPNFL. Downie’s history in the sport started at a very young age. “I started in Netta’s (now NetSetGo) when I was eight and I’ve been playing ever since, I just love the sport,” she said, before explaining her particular love for one end of the court.
“I can’t wait to get in amongst it, to find out what makes the clubs tick and to provide some really positive guidance and support to all clubs in the region. Samantha Downie Netball Operations Manager - AFL South East Phone: (03) 5995 0555 Email: netball@aflse.com.au
“I played my junior netball with Keysborough and started as a defender and never played in any another position ever since. “I moved across to Dingley to play with friends which gave me the opportunity to play representative netball with Springvale and District (SDNA) in the 15s and 17s. I played in the Dandenong Regionals team in the 17s and represented the region at the state titles.” The new Ops Manager, who has a Diploma in Sport and Recreation and several years of experience in Sales, Account Management and Marketing, has continued her involvement in the seniors, including six years as president of Keysborough and a leadership role with Melbourne Waverley. “I kept playing as a senior but took on additional opportunities to team manage and coach at SDNA and Melbourne Waverley,” the Western Bulldogs supporter said. “I was captain and coach at Melbourne Waverley and was awarded life membership in 2014, which is something I am very proud of. I had a couple of years away from Melbourne Waverley but went back in 2017 to coach the Open-1 team.”

A regional approach to umpiring It has been a long off season and now we are finally here for the opening round of 2018. While all clubs have been carefully preparing their playing lists in the hope of premiership glory, the umpires have also been eagerly awaiting the first bounce of the season. Season 2018 brings a new direction for umpiring within the AFL South East commission. Umpiring has long been managed by the Southern Umpires Association (SUA), with dedicated volunteers leading the strategy, coaching and management of umpiring throughout the region. During the off-season AFL South East and Southern Umpires Association reached an agreement to hand over these responsibilities to the AFL South East Commission. Through this agreement I have been appointed as the Regional Director of Umpiring and I am pleased to advise that Leigh Buwalda has been appointed as an Umpire Development Coordinator to help with the recruitment, retention and development of umpires. Leigh and I both look forward to working with all umpires, and in particular building strong relationships with clubs across the six junior and senior leagues serviced by umpiring. I am pleased to advise of the coaches that have been appointed for season 2018. Dave Golby has been appointed as the Head Coach of Umpiring.
Dave will be supported by Field Coaches Brett Gent and Dale Armstrong, Boundary Coach Adam Holland and Goal Coach Troy Bellchambers. These coaches will all be well supported by numerous assistant coaches and observers who will be there to support the development of umpires throughout the region. Umpire training continues to be based out of Kananook Reserve, Kananook, while in the South East umpiring has a new home at Carlisle Park in Cranbourne. Umpire training is every Monday and Wednesday night and anyone interested in getting involved is welcome to attend. As we embark on the opening rounds of season 2018, I wish all clubs the very best for the season ahead. I also want to take this chance to thank all umpires for their involvement this year and wish everyone an enjoyable season. Carl Fletcher AFLSE Regional Director of Umpiring

A coaching Clinnick in AFL South East They are entrusted with helping footballers reach their full potential – but just who is helping the 30 senior football coaches in AFL South East to reach an elite level of their own? The answer – the coaches are helping themselves. Roughly two years ago, well -respected former Devon Meadows coach Brent Clinnick put a pitch to AFLSE Football Development Manager Cam Roberts aimed at introducing a program to support the coaches. Clinnick understood perfectly the stresses involved at club land and convinced AFLSE to implement his plan. Now in his second year as the AFLSE Mentor and Coach Support Coordinator, Clinnick is thrilled to be backing up after a very rewarding first year in the role. “I think the program was enormously successful in its first year, creating a real bond and a support mechanism for all senior coaches in the region,” Clinnick said, before explaining the vulnerabilities that some coaches feel. “It’s a tough industry and a really tough job being a coach, the expectation is there that you know everything, but the reality is that coaches are learning on the run as well. “Not every club is great at supporting their senior coaches, and it might be as simple as just not understanding what the coach is going through. This program allows the coaches to lean on each other, maybe share a coffee and confide in each other to share their experiences.”
“In the past the pressure has built up and we’ve seen coaches with enormous potential simply walk away from the game. That’s not good enough from a support side of things – we want coaches still coaching and enjoying what they’re doing at the same time.” And despite their competitive edge, the coaches had been terrific at coming together as one. “One of the great things about the program is that egos are left on the hook and the coaches are providing each other with some fantastic feedback,” Clinnick said. “Last year we had a coach break through for a win after a long drought and he said he received more messages of support from the coaches around the leagues than he did from his own club. If that’s the sort of bond we’re creating, I think we’re pretty much on the right track.” And the success of the program is getting out, with AFL Goldfields getting in touch with Clinnick about the program, as has former Melbourne star and Doveton coach from last year Aaron Davey, who is now plying his trade in Northern Queensland. The program was targeted mainly at senior coaches in 2017 but will reach out as it continues to grow.
Clinnick coordinated coaching workshops in 2017, where senior coaches from all clubs in the MPNFL and SEFNL were invited to participate. “In some respect we’re breaking down the walls and providing an opportunity for coaches to express what they think is important in their role,” Clinnick said. “Simon Goosey (Mornington coach), Leigh McQuillen (Beaconsfield), Paddy Swayn (Pines), they’ve all presented at workshops, and the general message is that it’s ok not to know everything.
Mornington coach Simon Goosey has played a key role in the AFL South East Coaching Support Program.

A Slice of MPNFL History By Doug Dyall Season 2018 is now upon us and it has been a wait of great expectation with the two major powerhouses of recent seasons finally doing battle to see who is the real top dog of Peninsula football. Of course, we are talking about Sorrento and Frankston YCW, winners of 13 combined premierships since 2008 with Sorrento winning six and the Stonecats seven, with both clubs dominating their respective leagues. YCW has one of the more enviable records of any major Victorian league club, winning 12 premierships since 1991 at a 45-percent strike rate during that time. The Stonecats also became the first club in Peninsula history - dating back to 1908 - to win four consecutive premierships with their victory in 2017. Sorrento has a record that has without doubt raised the bar in the Nepean League over the past decade, winning its titles at a strike rate of 66 percent in an era controlled with salary caps and points systems that are geared up to provide level playing fields. The history of these two clubs is a contrast as Frankston YCW came out of the old Nepean League, while Sorrento had been a long-established club within the MPFL for over 50 years.
These two clubs found themselves in the same competition back in 1987, the first year after the amalgamation of the Nepean and Mornington Leagues to become the Mornington Peninsula Nepean Football League. They met in round six for the first time and it was Sorrento that took the honours winning 20-16 (136) to 13-12 (90). Sorrento spearhead Andrew Callaghan was superb with nine goals for the winners whilst the reliable Brad Phillips kicked five. The return match at Jubilee Park saw fortunes be reversed with Frankston YCW winning 9-12 (66) to Sorrento 4-11 (35). YCW forward Leo Harney kicked three goals and was one of the best for the bumble bees. In round nine 1988 Frankston YCW gained the upper hand winning 10-5 (65) to 5-16 (46) with Greg Lane the star with four goals. This was the only meeting between the teams for the season. Frankston YCW went 3-1 up in round five 1989 winning 19-14 (128) to 10-8 (68) - Brendon Delaney kicking four for the winners. Meeting again in Round 16 it was again Frankston YCW who took the prize with a 48-point victory, 17-14 (116) to 10-8 (68). Paul Goonan kicked five majors for the victors.
Frankston YCW’s 1989 premiership-winning team contained stars galore, including Paul Theobald (front left) and Joey Lane (front right).

www.aflsoutheast.com.au
Both sides made the finals in Division Two in 1989 and met for a third time with Frankston YCW again taking the honours on its way to the premiership. The Stonecats winning 16-16 (112) to 8-6 (54) with Goonan again the difference with three goals. Phillips once again shone for the Sorras with five. The two sides have not met since so the bragging rights are well and truly with Frankston YCW, holding a 5-1 winning record over Sorrento. Doug is a footy tragic and is willing to help MPNFL clubs trace back their history. Please contact Doug via email at doug.dyall@bigpond.com

Easter Round Good Friday 30th March 2018
Dromana v Rye

www.aflsoutheast.com.au
Footy Preview - Division 2 By David Nagel We will still have many more questions than answers after Dromana and Rye’s Good Friday season-opener at Beach Street – but for the Tigers and Demons this is an early indicator to see if their hopes and dreams are on track for 2018. The departure of Frankston, Rosebud and Sorrento has seen winners of nine of the last 11 premierships leave the scene, reviving fresh hope amongst those that remain. Or will Chelsea, Karingal and Langwarrin – the three teams to drop from Peninsula to Division Two – replace the Bombers, Navy Blues and Sharks as the dominant forces in the competition? Questions, questions, questions – it’s going to take quite some time to get our head around a lot of those this season! For now, we just need to bask in the glory of the return of football, and a contest between two proud clubs that are looking to revive their finals aspirations. The Tigers - under interleague skipper Rikki Johnson - narrowly missed out last year, finishing sixth, just a handful of percentage points behind Red Hill.
Rye had a disappointing year, winning five of its 18 games and finishing tenth in the 12-team competition. It’s a record that coach Josh Moore is keen to rectify. “It was a really tough year for us last year, but I believe it was a year we had to have,” Moore explained. “We blooded 14 kids through the senior team, and all those 14 have stuck around this year and I believe we will see real improvement from those guys. “For the first time in many years the Rye Under 19s will be a real challenger which is something we have been working towards for some time. With the senior group we have added some much-needed strength, all our recruits are big bodied which will complement our young list. “We will improve, but only time will tell how much.” If the Demons don’t improve there will be even more questions to answer because they’ve been quite busy over the summer months. Sorrento premiership player Tyrren Head has joined his local club after a seven-year stint with the Sharks. He will bring a wealth of finals experience to the table – and the Demons hope they will need it.

As for the Tigers, well they too will have some new faces as they look to continue their dominance over the Demons from last year and retain the O’Rourke-Matthews Shield. Oakleigh pair William Gregson and Andrew Howison join the fray, with Joel and Josh Bateman and Jake Millward heading south from Langwarrin. Will Johnson play himself forward, where he kicked 12 goals in the last two games of 2017 – including eight against the Demons in round 18 – or will he look for different avenues to goal? Ethan Johnstone and Jay Hutchison were the keys for the Tigers up forward last year – maybe they can get the job done. Many questions will remain – but for the time being let’s sit back and enjoy what’s sure to be an entertaining and willing start to the season. It’s the Tigers by 11 points.

Rye
Today sees the first game of the new MPNFL Division 2 competition and we come up against old rivals Rye in what should be a great start to the 2018 season. The off season has seen us very active in recruiting which we hope will further enhance our squads and we welcome all new players. There have also been some changes in our off field staff with Adrian Timmis taking over as Reserves coach and Peter Ball returning to coach our U19s. A huge thank you to our generous sponsors for their continued support and we welcome on board some new ones. With our football jumpers needing replacing this season to conform with AFL South East branding it was decided to modernise the design and no doubt as with any change some will like it and some will not. The previous design was about 16 years old. The club has a very full Social Calendar this year and if you want to find out what’s on visit our website www. dromanatigers.com.au or our Facebook site at www. facebook.com/DromanaTigers but better still join the club’s Team App(Details on website) . Tonight sees the first of our Social activities with a Player Auction then a Band night with Pizzas at $15 per head. Get along to the Player Auction which will commence after award presentation. The club as always is looking for volunteers in various areas and the more we have the less each one has to do so why not help out and make your club run even better. Major Raffle tickets are also on sale from today GO TIGERS
The Rye FNC, welcomes you all to what we think will be a successful 2018 season. Pre Season has been fantastic with numbers in all 3 grades very strong. Today it’s another massive Good Friday clash, this year against Dromana. Adding to the importance of getting the 4 points and having our first win, is the regaining the O’Rourke - Matthews Shield. Let’s hope come 4.30 today, we have the shield and Mick is in the rooms singing the theme song with the boys. The seniors will be again coached by Josh Moore and we welcome Peter “Grubby” Grant, onto the coaching team to assist Josh and Reg Chadwick. We also have Jimmy Jennings involved this year, coaching our backline, due to Jimmy’s injury in what may keep him off the field for season 2018. Welcome to Marcus “Flash” Gordon who takes over our reserves team in 2018, assistant by the ever reliable AD. The man who keeps getting better with age, Leigh Morse again takes the helm of our U/19 side, assisted by Hitchy. We are very excited with the depth of numbers and quality of our under 19 list, which has the club in good shape for years to come. Welcome to all our existing sponsors and new sponsors, who have come on board this season. A big thank you to Tim and Andrew Purchase at St Andrews Beach Brewery, on becoming major sponsors this season, please get out and visit the brewery, its 1st class. To John Kennedy Real Estate our jumper sponsor and Pencon Garden Supplies our match day shorts sponsor we thank you. Go Demons

Netball Preview Div 2 New look Dromana looks dangerous
By David Nagel A new-look Dromana outfit will have to cool its jets for a week with its Good Friday opponent Rye unable to field an A Grade team in MPNFL Division Two in 2018. The Demons did everything within their power to get their elite team up and running, but a perfect storm came together to provide some massive challenges to field a full complement of netball teams this year. A combination of pregnancies, students heading off for studies, and players leaving for other clubs has left the Demons short on numbers as they begin their season. “We’re a young developing club, which is great for the future, but we have a gap right now between those young girls and our more experienced players,” said Rye Netball Manager Jodie Stephens. The Demons will field three teams this season in B, C and D Grade. Dromana may have to wait a week, but the spotlight will be on the girls from Beach Street when they take to the court against Somerville in round one on Saturday 7 April. Dromana is barely recognisable from the team of 2017, with Laura Hopkins the only remaining player from that list.
Among an array of stars to join the club, keep an eye out for Karli Foster, and extremely athletic and competitive defender who has been part of Hampton Park’s A grade squad over the past few years. Chloe Birch, Brianna and Emily Pratt, Emily Wilson and Emily La Roche are all versatile performers that are destined to make their mark this season. Coach Kylie Johnson will be aiming high on the ladder but needs to mould that talented list into a team.
As the reigning premier, Crib Point will have a big target on its back as it heads into the new season.

Netball Notes
Rye
Dromana
Welcome to all our new and returning players and their families. We are all looking forward to a positive season. This year we have had to make the difficult decision to not field an A Grade or U 17’s team. We have lost a number of players over the last three years, and the number of experienced players we have has been depleted considerably. We do however have a group of dedicated and positive young girls who are willing to work hard and develop their skills. These girls have worked hard over the preseason and are excited to meet the challenges that lay ahead. We are excited to introduce a new and talented head coach, Lauren Hearn who has returned to Rye after living and playing netball at the Yea Football Netball Club. Lauren will be instrumental in changing the culture at Rye, developing the players we have and rewarding those who work hard and are dedicated to their club. Positivity will be key this year at Rye, as we work towards rebuilding our teams. We are also excited to have club stalwart Lucy Millar return to Rye as coach of our C grade team, along with Barb Hilder as coach of D Grade. What an exciting year ahead as we continue to coach, develop and mentor all the girls in our club.
The Season has come around fast but we are ready with 5 teams again this year. A lot of new faces at Dromana this year which brings with it alot of new talent. A big welcome to all the new girls.Lets get the 4 pts on the bosrd and get back to the Club tonight for the Players Auction and band. Go Tigers

Stingrays
Stingrays clip the Falcons wings, dominating the scoreboard. The Dandenong Southern Stingrays kicked five goals in the second quarter against the Geelong Falcons and were never challenged thereafter in the 15.10 (100) to 6.11 (47) romp at GMHBA Stadium on Sunday in the round 1 clash. The Stingrays had nine separate goal kickers and welcomed the return from ACL injures in over age players Aaron Darling (3 goals) and Jake Frawley, whilst Geelong Falcons Charlie Sprague kicked 3 goals for the wayward Falcons. While the Falcons were completely smashed on the scoreboard at GMHBA Stadium in front of a good crowd, they had their fair share of the ball but wasted too many opportunities in front of goal. But it was an even classy Stingrays team that looked like they had winners in all positions, with abundant of height, speed on the outside, grunt on the inside and a love for each other right up until the final siren. They were led sensationally by key on-ballers Campbell Hustwaite (21 possessions and two goals), Jai Taylor (2 goals), William Hamill (19), while Mitch Riordan also played an integral role.
Stingrays new-look half-back line performed well, with 19-year-old Angus Patterson slotting in seamlessly at CHF, whilst 17-year-old Hayden Young looked comfortable in his second TAC Cup game and were well supported superb run and carry from Jake Frawley and William Hamill. Adding to the strong backline was naming and playing all 197cm and above players who would play through the midfield and forward could have gone either way, but the speed and athleticism shown by all players would have opposition sides vary in the coming weeks. Riley Bowman was probably the standout on the day, kicking 2 goals and caused a lot of issues for the Falcons defensive as his movement, below his knees and kicking is elite. Whilst, Bailey Williams and Bailey Schmidt had solids games roaming the forward-line having stints in the Ruck. Stingrays Talent Manager Mark Wheeler was pleased his team was able to fire first up after being smashed at the same venue in the finals last year. “For as long as I can remember we haven’t won at GMHBA Stadium against the Falcons,” Wheeler said. “The anticipation after the pre-season and playing on an AFL ground makes the game a bit bigger, plus taking on the 2017 Premiers on their home turf.” “It’s hard to usually calm our players who have a little stage fright but we fielded a round 1 team with the most experience in the history of the Stingrays in the TAC Cup.”
The Dandenong Stingrays run out for their first game of the season. Dandenong Stingrays 3.2-20 8.6-54 12.7-79 15.10-100 Geelong Falcons 0.5-5 1.8-14 3.9-27 6.11-47 Stingrays Goal Kickers: A. Darling 3, J. Taylor 2, C. Hustwaite 2, F. Bayne 2, R. Bowman 2, T. Bedford, S. Cumming, B. Schmidt, J. Hickey Stingrays Best Players: J. Taylor, C. Hustwaite, M. Riordan, R. Bowman, W. Hamill, T.
