AFL South East The curtain will close on season 2018 for seven senior teams in MPNFL Division Two today and each and every one will have a completely different story to tell. Somerville and Rye began their journey with the realistic goal of playing finals this year but will join either Hastings or Langwarrin on the sidelines. Both teams had good patches throughout the season, but injuries to key players, and some close losses, halted their finals’ charge. Devon Meadows and Pearcedale have also had their moments, with both sets of Panthers not that far away from reintroducing themselves to the big stage. Departing coach Glenn Michie has built a solid foundation at Devon Meadows and it will be interesting to see how the club progresses from here. Crib Point’s season highlight came against Devon Meadows in round seven, its only win for the year. But the great story to emerge from the bottom half of the ladder belongs to Tyabb, who today chase their sixth win of the season against Somerville. Tyabb had won just two games in the previous four years, so this is a serious step forward for the club – well done to everyone involved in the progression.

And we have some news to share for season 2019. At its meeting on Monday 30 July, the AFL South East Commission released its findings emanating from an annual review into the Community Club Sustainability Program (CCSP). AFL Victoria developed the CCSP to reduce the impact that match-payments and player demands have on the viability of grassroots football clubs. After thoroughly examining audits of all MPNFL Clubs, the Commission will begin the process of gradually reducing the level of Player Payments to a sustainable level. As a result, the Commission has decided a $10,000 decrease will be implemented in 2019, reducing the Allowable Player Payments from $150,000 to $140,000 across both divisions of the MPNFL. The Commission regards this as a step forward for MPNFL Clubs. It will help to reduce the costs involved in running community clubs and stop the escalation of Player Payments across the region. A mid-year audit of MPNFL Clubs in 2018 suggests the reduction is likely to impact only four clubs across the two divisions of the MPNFL, who currently exceed the new threshold of $140,000. As part of its review, the Commission will increase the Player Points Allocation from 39 to 40 across both divisions of the MPNFL in 2019. The Commission regards the increase in the Player Points System as a further positive for MPNFL Clubs, helping with the recruitment of players. The Commission will continue to adopt the following guiding principles regarding the additional allocation or reduction of Total Team Points to a Community Club: • Additional total team points may be allocated to a Community Club which is located in a region with a low population base. • Additional total team points may be allocated if a Community Club did not qualify for finals in previous seasons or has been promoted from previous seasons. • Reduction of total team points may be invoked for multiple premierships and sustained success over previous seasons. • Additional total team points may be allocated if a Community Club endures significant hardship, lack of success, is coming out of recess, or is a recently merged or restructured entity. • Additional total team points may be allocated where a Community Club has no U18 or U19 or younger underage sides and is not capable of developing a junior program due to reasons outside of its control. AFL Vic Country There is nothing better in Victorian country football, than finals action. After a gruelling pre-season and tough home and away rounds, finals footy has arrived, or is just around the corner, and with it comes a sense of optimism that your team is on the cusp of making history. Some clubs will be looking to build on magnificent recent records, take Frankston YCW and Sorrento in the Mornington Peninsula Nepean Football League Division One for instance. Sorrento has thoroughly earned its promotion to Division One after a dominant era in the second division, while YCW has made winning premierships look easy.

With thousands of Victorian’s set to be part of community football finals this year, we’re encouraging all football fans to be respectful of each other during football’s most exciting time of the year. Together, we can ensure that win, lose or draw that this finals series is a memorable one for all the right reasons. Please keep an eye out on the AFL Victoria website and social media channels for a listing of all AFL Victoria Country Grand Final details in the coming weeks. Good luck to all competing clubs as they look to add their names into the history books.

The Stonecats have won seven of the last eight flags, including the last five on the trot, to become of the true powerhouse football clubs in country Victoria. On the flipside, clubs like Red Hill, Chelsea, Karingal and Langwarrin are looking to break a recent run of outs and give their long-time supporters something to cheer about. And we encourage everyone involved in the game to take a deep breath and really enjoy the occasion. Regardless of whether you’re a player, coach, umpire or supporter, with your hopes hinging on the premiership decider, or just an interested onlooker, football finals is always an occasion to savour. However as we move deeper into August, it’s a timely reminder to all football fans to ensure that the game continues to be played in the right spirit throughout the season.

While finals time brings out the passion in all of us, it’s important to ensure that appropriate behaviour remains front of mind for everyone, regardless of the time of year. As role models in the local community, football clubs have a responsibility to provide a welcoming and safe environment for everyone both on and off the field. This finals season, make it your club’s aim to create awareness among players, coaches, members, staff and spectators of the importance of playing the game with good sportsmanship.

Footy Preview - Division 1 Rubik’s Cube has nothing on this! By David Nagel Trying to predict the final finishing order for this year’s MPNFL Division One season is an almost impossible task – with two incredible rounds of football to come. It’s like trying to solve Rubik’s Cube in a way, with so many subtle twists set to make such a huge difference to the final outcome. Three teams, Sorrento, Edi-Asp and Mt Eliza, can still finish top of the table, while seventh-placed Bonbeach has won four of its last five games and is closing in on a finals berth. Only Rosebud, in eighth place, has nothing really to play for with bottom-placed Seaford still a minor chance of catching Mornington and avoiding relegation. But without doubt the biggest contest today takes place at Emil Madsen Reserve where Mt Eliza and Edi-Asp lock horns in a really important battle for both clubs. The equation for the Redlegs today is pretty simple. If they win they’re a better than even money chance of finishing top three, but if they lose they will more than likely slip to fourth – not ideal, with a cut-throat finals campaign then the stark reality they will have to deal with. And it’s pretty much the same for the Eagles. If they win they set up a battle for top spot against Sorrento in round 18, while a loss will see them needing to defeat the Sharks to hold on to a double chance. Both teams are coming off strong wins last week, with the Redlegs crushing Rosebud by 85 points and the Eagles surging late for a 29-point victory over Frankston. The Redlegs produced a clinical first-half performance before cruising home in the second half. Jordan Moncrieff kicked five, and James Freeman and Mitch Copping three each, while Brenton Lambert, Tom Freeman, Ben Landry and Blaine Coates did as they pleased around the ground. The Redlegs have won three on the trot and are cherry ripe for this one. Edi-Asp enjoyed the addition of the exquisitely-skilled Tom Lamb, who booted five goals, with Lachie Batten, Darcy Warke and best on ground Sam Monaghan also instrumental in the strong finish over the Bombers. The Eagles led by just 10 points at the final change but kicked clear with a 6.4 to 3.3 final term.

Perry Lewis-Smith starred for Pines against YCW last week. Mick Meehan, Charlie Martello and Todd Woodbridge were also impressive for the Eagles, who will look to Brett O’Hanlon to orchestrate a strong defensive effort against the dangerous Redlegs front half. This one should be a great game of footy - hot early considering the importance to both clubs – before settling into a power struggle between two of the better midfields going around. Emil Madsen has hardly been a fortress for the Redlegs this year, losing three games there this season – and the Eagles will make it four with a 13-point victory. The journey to playing finals is becoming a hell of a lot clearer for Bonbeach as the Sharks make the trip to Belvedere Reserve today to take on Seaford. The Sharks were a downcast lot as they trudged off their home ground after a round 11 loss to Rosebud, a loss that appeared to have ended their finals hopes for good.

Footy Preview - Division 1 The Sharks were like a bushwalker lost in a forest, with plenty of obstacles and a lot of uncertainty to overcome as they took their first steps on what looked to be a very fanciable journey indeed. But Steve Hughes and his team have cut through a substantial amount of foliage and now find themselves just two steps away from open ground and a shot at this year’s premiership. The Sharks have won four of their last five and now need to defeat the Tigers, and then Pines at Eric Bell Reserve in round 18, to be a realistic chance of playing finals. And if they win both, they deserve to get there. The Sharks were impressive against Mornington last week, riding a virtuoso nine-goal performance from star-forward Trent Dennis-Lane to a 43-point win. The Sharks best players are finding form at precisely the right time of year, with two-time league best and fairest winner Shane McDonald joining TDL on a glittering best players list. Gav Vassallo and Luke Verma have also been instrumental in the late-season revival, while Jo Fisscher, Jackson Casey and Matt Douglas are sure to give the Tigers plenty of headaches today. Seaford had moments of good footy against Sorrento last week. The Tigers used the aid of the breeze nicely in the opening term, but just couldn’t stem the flow in the second quarter with Sorrento kicking 6.8 to 1.0 to take control of proceedings. The Tigers hit back, cutting the margin to nine points at the final break, but were outplayed again in the final term. Aaron Walton certainly made an impact in his first game back since round seven, booting six, while Curtis Barker, Ayden Woodward and Dean Williamson lifted for the challenge against the ladder leaders. But Bonbeach just has too much to play today…and they’ll win, and condemn Seaford to relegation, with a 23 point victory. Pines is a very good chance of finishing top three and will look to keep those double-chance hopes alive when the Pythons make the trip south to take on Mornington today. After a fast start the Pythons were never in danger against a wayward Frankston YCW last week, blasting their way to a 33-point lead at quarter time. Aaron Edwards was the only multiple goalkicker on the ground, booting four, as the Pythons booked themselves a ticket to this year’s finals series. But from what position will they begin on the starting grid? The Pythons obviously need to play their part and defeat the Bulldogs and Bonbeach, and finish on 48 points with a healthy percentage. The loser of today’s clash between Mt Eliza and Edi-Asp will then be right under the pump heading into the final round of the season, with the Pythons likely to finish top three. And who knows what could happen from there!

Coach Paddy Swayn has told us all along that his team will get better as we get deeper into the season. He prediction has proved spot on with the Pythons having won four on the trot now and building nicely towards September. Perry Lewis-Smith has settled nicely into a groove and has been a wonderful addition to a very accomplished midfield. Ben Thomas held firm against the Stonecats last weekend, while Nick Boswell and Jonathon Hughes were also important in keeping the Stonecats to a losing score. Mornington was outplayed by a resurgent Bonbeach last week, being overrun in the final term. Ryan Odell kicked two, to be the Bulldogs’ best, while Joel Miller would surely have added votes to his quest for a best and fairest award this year. Barry Smeeton and Josh Halsall also played well against the Sharks, and will need to repeat those performances if the Doggies are to trouble the Pythons this afternoon. But Swayn and his coaching staff have bigger fish to fry – and they’ll move a step closer to a double chance with a 21-point victory. The task ahead of Frankston is much easier to identify than it is to execute, with the Bombers needing to roll Sorrento at David MacFarlane Reserve today to keep their finals dreams alive. Consecutive losses to Pines, Bonbeach and Edi-Asp has the Bombers on the back foot and requiring a huge effort today against a great rival from over the years. Sorrento’s last premiership win was against the Bombers last season, while the history gets even stronger with the Bombers defeating the Sharks by 27 points to claim their last title in 2009.

Footy Preview - Division 1 So they know each other well and what the other is capable of. Sorrento’s big guns all lifted in the last quarter against Seaford last week with Leigh Poholke, Luke Tapscott and James and Mitch Hallahan all hitting the scoreboard when it mattered most. It was eerily similar to what took place against Mt Eliza in round 11, where class also came to the fore. James Hallahan is having a magnificently consistent season, while Poholke and Tapscott – who kicked seven between them last week – are going to prove a real handful for the Bombers’ defence today. The Bombers were brave for three quarters against Edi-Asp, but just fell off the pace in the final term. Given recent results, it’s sort of a reflection of their season in a way. Brad Whittley has made a great impression over the last fortnight of football while Sam Fox, Jason Kingsbury and Brett Sutton have been holding things together in recent times. Jason Bedford and Mitch Bosward were also impressive against the Eagles last week and will look to step things up even further against the Sharks. Frankston will start this game well, it simply has to, but the class of the Sharks will tell the story at the end of the day and the home side will win by 14 points. And Frankston YCW will look to straighten up its goal kicking when the Stonecats welcome Rosebud to Jubilee Park today. The Stonecats just had one of those days against Pines last week, kicking 3.19 in one of the most wasteful displays we’ve seen for many a long day. Wayne Capp would have been a frustrated man, but can at least take solace away from the fact that his team had more shots at goal. They created chances – but just couldn’t take the bloody things! Hayden Raphael, Kyle Hutchison, Byron Barry and Jacob Cheverly were important for the Cats last week, while Daniel Hughes and Lewis Roberts have set themselves up for a huge last fortnight of footy. The Stonecats have to win both of their remaining matches, against the Buds and Mt Eliza, to guarantee themselves a shot at a remarkable fifth-consecutive premiership. So can Rosebud spoil the party? Well they did defeat YCW at Olympic Oval back in round eight, by five points in a thriller. Sean Downie and Josh Harris will be keen to build their growing reputations in the MPNFL, while Ben Dwyer will enjoy the challenge of taking on Macklin Raine in the ruck. Fletcher Hustwaite has had a stellar season for the Buds, with Rhys Pierce, Robert Bos and Seb Krumeich also performing well in the Buds first season in the top flight. Things could horribly wrong for the Stonecats here, the Buds are dangerous when firing – but we’ll go for the home side to win by a 23-point margin.

Footy Notes Mt Eliza Today we welcome the Edi-Asp FNC to “Impact Realty Park” for what shapes as a huge day of footy with all games having impacts on Finals positions. Three from three last week at Rosebud was great. After a sluggish start the Under 19’s kicked into gear after 1/4 time against an undermanned opposition, to boot 13.12 to 1.0 after quarter time to win by 89 points. Pete Evans-Brumby kicked 4 to be named in the best, along with Pagey, Chips, Max Mourney, Parks & Thieley. The Reserves trailed by 8 points at 1/4 time before they also got their game going with 10 goals to nil to win by 59 points. Sam Hallpike was great with his 5 goals, Cuz was amongst the best with his 2 and others to feature were Juz, Stricko, Max Rea and Big Sexy. The Seniors got out of the blocks well early, leading by 5 goals at 1/4 time and increased the margin to 65 at 1/2 time. Rosebud won the 3rd term by a point, before we kicked clear in the last with 4 goals to 1 to win by 85. Jordy Moncrieff booted 5 in a dominant display and Jimmy & Chop with 3 each were lively. Others in the best were Lamby, Tom Freeman, Coatesy and Langers. Congrats to Jimmy Freeman on his Casey debut a couple of weeks ago! The 3rd quarter saw us play some reasonable football where we got some run and started taking the game on to bring the margin back to 3 goals. The last quarter we allowed Bonbeach to kick to many easy goals and we walked away very disappointed with what we dished up. Probably the only positive to come out was we had a first gamer in Angus Paterson who performed quite well and that we played our youngest side for the year We look forward to today in hosting Pines and bouncing back to play our football. Mornington Welcome to kennel - it’s great to finally be back after 5 weeks away. Last week against Bonbeach the Under’s started the day with a solid win to keep them in finals contention. A win today cements their spot in the 5, so the pups will need to be focused and prepared. In the Ressies it’s was disappointing after as great win against YCW the week before. We gave them a huge start and then played catch up. They showed us the way to play the conditions and in general terms the game. In the Seniors where we’d been around the mark most games, the game last week was our 2nd worse game for the year. With a cross breeze we didn’t make the most of our opportunities in the first and when Bonbeach went

In addition to the big game for our seniors we have a milestone to celebrate in the Reserves where Sean Cameron plays his 150th club game today. We love the Bombers family history around Seany C where his grandfathers, father & uncles all played at the club before him. The Geddes/ Cameron dynasty have supplied three generations of footballers including 3 Life Members, Coaches, Captains & B&F winners. It’s been great to see Sean in the best players recently as he forges his own reputation to compliment the family tree & we congratulate him on his achievement. On the social scene it was a terrific day at the club yesterday where Dane Swan & the Suburban Footballer entertained a full house. Lunch was beautiful & washed Sponsor of the Day down with a lovely wine selection before the headline acts had the joint rocking, another great Businessmen’s Lunch & thanks to all that attended. An even first half had us just in front going into the second half. Kicking 8 goals saw us run away with a 30 point victory. A good season from the boys so far. Best players were S.Monaghan, C.Martello, T. Lamb, M. Meehan, D. Warke, T.Woodbridge. The twos had another good win with the second half dominated by the forwards. Kicking 9 goals to 3 sealed the win. Two tough games coming up for the boys but their determination will see them well placed for the finals. Best players were M. Allen, J. Watterson, S. Moloney, D. McCarthy, L. Hulett.

The 19’s were back on the park after a forfeit the previous week and in a tough game got home by 10 points. Well placed for the finals a top 2 finish is the aim. Best players were K. Hutchinson, B. Seamons, M. Moloney, J. Stuart, A. Flynn, D. Shannon. Our fantastic netballers continued on their winning ways with 4 good wins. Some tough games this week for the girls but they should prevail. The Reserves with a number of forced changes from the week before, took on the highly rated Seaford side in a must win to keep alive hopes of finishing top 3. With a strong wind blowing to one end, we had to contain the opposition when kicking into it and make the most of opportunities when kicking with it. It was a gripping contest for 4 quarters with both sides having there moments on top. We had opportunities in the last with some near misses, in the end Seaford were to good holding on to win by 4 points. Once again while not getting the job done, we walk away knowing we can compete with the best. A big 2 weeks to fine tune for finals and it starts today with our last home game of the season. The Seniors were well aware it was a danger game with some notable outs and a desperate Seaford at home. Seaford was able to get off to a flyer too with the aid of the breeze and some good footy. The second quarter we were able to wrestle back control and get on top to take the lead at the main break. The second half was a workman like performance, getting the job done without too many highlights. It was a good win in the end, getting the 4 points while not at the top of our game. Today we take on the Bombers, a team we know well with a recent rivalry in big games. They beat us at their home first time round, today is our chance to return the favour. Thought of the week: 82.764 % of all statistics are made upon the spot!

Footy Notes Seaford A very big thank you to everyone who supported the clubs major fundraiser last weekend. It was a record night for the clubs draw and wouldn’t happen without the support of the playing departments and supporters. It was great to see a full house at the old rooms at which could possibly have been our last function in them. Well done to all the winners on the night but none more than, Wayne “Cookie” Cook. Cookie has been a long time supporter/helper of SJFC and in recent years SFNC when his son Harley played. Congrats Cookie. Thank you to all those who attended the club meeting on Monday night regarding our clubs future home venue. We hope to share more info regarding that asap. Pines What a great day at the Pit. A different luncheon where the guest speakers were great people from the clubs that appreciate the history of this competition. Thanks to Gameface, Dan Lonergan and crew for MCing the YCW greats - Lane brothers, local international and Somerville great Shaun Graf, and our own Peter Coughlin and Damien Pusch. We remembered the days when the game was played tough on the pitch but the great camaraderie between clubs was instilled through interleave brotherhood and many beers. Newcomers to the competition should take heed of the brotherhood and rejoice in what brings us together, rather than search for issues that divide us. Today we venture to Mornington for the Swayn/Goosey Coffee Cup. Which is odd because neither of these guys would shout each other a coffee. Another 3 good games await and all will be close, no doubt, so we need to be out in full voice to support the boys, followed by upstairs to share stories with the Mornington crew. Lot’s of fun today but if it all gets too much for the girls, get a pass out of the ground and venture down to Embella on Barkly and get yourself some ME time pampering from one of our sponsors. Frankston YCW Welcome Rosebud FNC to John Coburn Oval for critical games today. **Congratulations to Trent Cowled for achieving a wonderful milestone of 200 games for the club. A better bloke you would be hard pressed to meet. **Congratultions to Lew Roberts for achieving 100 1st XV111 games. Another important milestone in a career gleaming with highlights. Last week we had mixed results. The Unders were dominant early setting up a comfortable victory and all but securing a top 3 finish. Best were the ultra consistent Caleb Douglas, Jordan Berenger and Joshua O’Toole, who also banged through 5 big ones. In a milestone game for Chappy, who slotted 6, the two’s left it late to snatch victory. An Impressive conversion rate saved the day, together with persistence and teamwork. Chappy was chaired off and fittingly voted best, with Jake Theobald and Owen Vine. In a really tight season victories are like gold at this time of year and a top 3 spot is still up for grabs. A week to forget and move on quickly for the one’s. Just 3 goals for the day sums it up. A couple of positives were the debut of Jordon Pirpiris, and we remained in the top 5. Despite the loss our destiny is in our own hands. Hayden Raphael got the nod as best along with Daniel Hughes and Jacob Cheverly.

Footy Notes Rosebud Our final home game last week v the Redlegs and even though we were unable to register a win in the footy, the crowd was entertained by some great footy on all levels. Our Auskick future stars were a hit at halftime in the 1’s and our A grade girls dominated one again to record a resounding win by 37 which has hopefully secured them a finals birth with their synergy team play. Mt Eliza FNC could possibly take out the triple double in footy & netball after their strong finish to the season with 1’s 2’s 19’s, B, C, D - hard to tip against. It was great to see Ben Dwyer head up the best players after a few weeks rest a couple of rounds ago - he’s rumoured to be pulling the boots on again in 2019. Today we take on the Stonecats & Stonekittens at Jubilee Park. In round 8 we defeated them by a very exciting 5 points which was was probably one of our clubs proudest victories ever. Not sure if we’ll see Keegan again this season after his form kicking a few goals for the VFL Dolphins. Tonight we head back to the Rosebud Hotel who have been one of the clubs long term sponsors. From an historical point, the original home of the Rosebud Football Club was the Village Green opposite the hotel which was quite a bit larger back in the day. Bonbeach We had a wonderfully attended Community Match Day function against Mornington Bulldogs on the weekend! James “Hammer” Harding spoke really well about his journey and how he has come to be who he is now. Check out the photos on our Facebook page! Our Seniors have kept the Finals door slightly ajar with a comprehensive display against Mornington. We played an excited brand and need to do the same against Seaford to be a sniff for September action. Our Reserves won two in a row for the first time in 2018, as we also took risks with the footy and got the ball to the forwards advantage more often than not. Our U/19 boys worked hard against an always strong Mornington outfit. Progress is really being made and we are excited to round the year out with two great performances. We look forward to seeing the Sharks supporters in full force against the Tigers on Saturday!! Go Sharks

Netball Preview - Division 1 Buds put a life lesson into practice By David Nagel

Learning life lessons is a big bonus of being involved in sport and Rosebud will look to put one of the biggest learnings to good use when the Buds travel to Jubilee Park today to take on Frankston YCW. Taking nothing for granted is one of the great learnings along the journey, and the Buds will be fully aware of that fact when they step onto the court this afternoon. All things being equal, Nicole Hadgkiss and her girls have already done enough to play finals this year but just need that one final victory to book their ticket to centre stage. The Stonekittens and then Frankston Bombers are the teams that stand in their way – they’re no pushovers. The Buds have had a brilliant finish to the season and players like Millie McDermott, Beth Leach, Lauren Robinson, Emma White and Nicole Chianta have committed too much sweat and tears to let it all slip away now. The Buds were clinical against Mt Eliza last week, but take on a Stonekittens outfit that was also impressive in a 13goal victory over Pines. Holly Booth is super-competitive, and was in top form last week against the Pythons, while Elly McDonald, Carly Withers, Lyshae Barry and Brooke Cant will push the Buds to the limit. But Rosebud breath easy, you’re on your way to finals after a 10-goal victory. Seaford just needs to win its last two games against Bonbeach and Mornington to lock up second-place on the ladder and the Tigers can narrow that focus at Linen House today. The Tigers were the clear trendsetters in the early part of the season, but losing key players at key times has seen them fall off a very-hot pace. Tracey Dell and Kara Hargrave have been sensational in defence, while star-performer Tayla Robertson will be keen for a big game today in her 100th appearance for the club. An interleague captain, Team of the Year member, and club best and fairest winner, Robertson is one of the most respected players in the MPNFL and thoroughly deserves her applause. Bonbeach players like Steph Coy, Sarah Gales, Remi Hynes and Emma Doderico have given plenty for the Sharks this year – but the inspired Tigers will win by 20-goals plus. Sorrento will play its last home game for the season when it welcomes long-time foe Frankston to the tip of the Southern Peninsula this afternoon. Alana Schaeche and her team will more than likely start a highly-anticipated finals campaign from third position, but showed they have what it takes go all the way with a nine-goal win over Seaford last week. Gemma Grant, Hannah Mundy and Schaeche were superb for the winners, while the return of Dom Taylor is a very

positive sign going forward. Frankston has a tough-run home, against the Sharks and Rosebud, but Emma Mason, Louise Brittain, Sarah Muston and Blair Anderson have been consistent performers this year and will look to finish their season on a high. But Sorrento will be too good and bank a 12-goal victory. Mornington has a good chance of making it three wins on the trot when the Bulldogs host Pines this afternoon. Wins over YCW and Bonbeach have the Bulldogs in good spirits with Sarah Nash, Katey Rudolph, Tess Haddock, Candace Page and Holly Newton all putting in a great effort to have their side in fifth place on the ladder. They will probably miss out on finals but should be extremely proud of their efforts. Pines has also had some great contributors this year with Tarina Tiaiti, Merinda Hale, Ash Boyle and Maddi Blackburn giving their all on a weekly basis. And they will do so again…but the Doggies will win by 10. And only a minor miracle will stop Edithvale-Aspendale from confirming top spot on the ladder when the Eagles hit the road to take on bottom-placed Mt Eliza. Emily Patterson has played every game for the Eagles this year while Christina Vickery, Brianna Hollis, Nicole Taylor and Caris MacInnes have also played huge roles in taking their side to the top perch on the ladder. Mt Eliza has also had some terrific performers this year, with Jamie O’Hare, Carly Russo, Bayley Wells and Madi McDonald showing some great fight when things haven’t looked good on the scoreboard. But the Eagles will lock up top spot for the finals with a comfortable victory.

Netball Notes Division 1 Mornington D Grade had a good win by 8 goals. Kayla had an awesome game taking home “Best On” for her speed & precision in the goal ring. Emily also had a pearler both at training & during Saturday’s game in the back line. Sam again showed great leadership when coming on in the second half with her super accurate goaling. All in all the team gelled beautifully for a well deserved win & confidence boost heading towards the finals. C Grade- Bonebach came out strong & gave us a run for our money all match with us taking home the win. We welcomed back Kristen S after injury in the mid court & our defensive end did an awesome job with BOC going to Jess who pulled off some great intercepts. B grade had an awesome hit out against Bonbeach. The girls were on fire for 3 quarters of the game. We dropped the ball a little in the last but we had thankfully secured a good gap. They fought hard and were accurate at the post and everything just came together. BOC was Demi who has improved greatly this season. A grade continued with great form as the D, C and B grade had played before them and had a solid win by 11 goals. We started strong then lowered the intensity a little letting Bonbeach equal us in the 2nd quarter. After half time we lifted again and had a solid 3rd quarter as was the 4th. A bit of a scare with Britta, who was taken to hospital after friendly fire but good news she is ok. BOC was Georgia, who again dominated the mid court.

With finals firmly in their sight the A grade came out to play & redeem their loss to Seaford in R7. The intensity & pressure in the first quarter was immense. We welcomed back Dom to the court in the 3/4Q in goals with Gemma stepping in at the defensive end & from thereon in there was no stopping the Shark girls. Great team effort & one the players should be proud of a fanatic win & a great lead up into the finals series. Best on Gemma, Hannah & Alana. A stellar performance by our defenders today on all counts.

They did an exceptional job at turning the game around in the 3rdQ bring the margin back to within 2 goals. Tiahn, yet again working herself nicely around the goals & earnt herself a best on ground vote. Not the result we wanted going down by 4 however, next week is looking promising when we take on Frankston Bombers at home. Best on Sophie, Tiahn and Rachel Great team effort from C Grade this week to come away with the win. Astonishing shooting from both Sarah and Liv as well as a strong whole team defence effort got us over the line. Best on Macy, Ruby & Sarah D Grade got off to a flying start with Holly & Annie barely missing a goal. Fed in beautifully to the goaler’s and moved down the court by a strong Indi and Narelle. Edi-Asp The Thank You Round 17 v Mt Eliza With the end of the season fast approaching, it’s time to thank all the people who have worked so hard to support our club. There’s a lot of people behind the scenes, who are there week in, week out, to make sure that everything runs smoothly. B grade knew they would have a physical game based on the last match up. The game didn’t start the way we would have liked and we weren’t able to break ahead. We struggled to convert our centre passes and treasure our turnovers. It took us a while to settle in and take control, but at half time we came out strong and were able to get momentum to win by 12 goals. BOC goes to Paige for playing a smart, controlled game and shooting exceptionally. The C grade girls had an even start to the game against a physical opposition. The girls applied great defensive pressure over the whole court and consistently bought the ball down the court really well and converted majority of our centre passes. It was great to see the girls consistently play out all 4 quarters winning 55 - 26. Best on goes to the whole attack end, Anna, Holly and Kelsey for an amazing 4 quarters together. D grade also had a fantastic win against Pine. Everyone took the court with a bit more aggression and we played our own game. We need to keep that momentum coming into this weeks games against Rosebud and keep that support up. BOC goes to Abbey for a stellar game in defences and goals.

Frankston YCW Getting to end of the season, ,it was nice for our A grade to have a win against Pines. We really didn’t want to be complacent this week and set up some gaols in order to keep us working hard all game however fell a little short. BOC goes to Holly for her direction down the attack end and her ability to think 3 steps ahead.

Netball Notes Division 1 Mt Eliza We travellled to windy Rosebud last week for our round 16 matches. D grade were dominant from the first whistle, winning by 20 goals in the end (46-26). D grade are putting up a solid fight to keep 4th spot and their finals hopes alive. With a few injuries the girls really banded together to get the win. Brianna did well as did Krystal and Renae. C grade started a little slow, but put their foot down as each quarter passed. They had a huge win in the end 7024. It was great to see Jordyn step up from D grade, while Evie played a great game and Kate contributed well. B grade were ready for a tough game only beating Rosebud by 6 goals last time, although it was close in the first quarter they ran away with the game in the end winning 59-27. This team gets stronger each week as they fight to keep second place on the ladder for the 2nd chance come finals time. Michelle had a great game in defence while Ebony was great also. It was pleasing to see Jordie step up from C grade and hold her own. A grade had a great first quarter. An injury depleted side, they are fighting each week to improve and get through each game. Itâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s been a tough season but there are plenty of positives. Unfortunately this week Rosebud were too strong, winning 62-25. Jamie was on fire in goals and played an amazing game, while Carly and Bayley were strong in the mid court. This week we play Edi-asp at home.

A Slice of MPNFL History Thirds donâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;t do things by halves By Doug Dyall Keeping with the theme of recent weeks, we look at the recent Premierships of clubs in the third division. Junior football started on the Peninsula in 1947 when the MPFL formed a third eighteen for under age football. The first winner was Morning Star who won the first two flags. The underage competition has run each year since and out of the current clubs only Devon Meadows and Pearcedale are yet to take out the title. Crib Point have the longest drought with 53 years since it won the Nepean League competition, whilst Bonbeach has waited 49 years after winning the same title in 1969. The Division One title since 2000 has been taken out by just four clubs Frankston YCW winning four times, Mornington seven times, Mt Eliza five times and Seaford once. Whilst in Division Two or Nepean League Somerville has won eight titles and Langwarrin four in that same time frame. Here is the list of each clubâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s most recent wins.

Footy Preview - Division 2 Langwarrin’s destiny in its own hands By David Nagel

Jesse Murphy continues to excel up forward, booting five, while Nick Tuddenham slotted two in a lively display through the midfield. The Kangas will need to be wary today, because Pearcedale is playing its best footy of the season right now. The Panthers have had two wins and a draw from their last three outings, including a round-16 tie against a likely top-three contender in Chelsea. Nothing much separated the Panthers and Rye for three quarters last week, but a 5.5 to 1.1 final term will see the Panthers go in with a great degree of confidence this afternoon. Luke Daniel kicked three in a standout performance for the Panthers, while Laughlin Cowell, Trav Bravo, Zane Hill, Luke Murray and Damien Scully would love to ruin the Kangaroos party. But Langy has worked far too hard to throw things away now…and they’ll confirm their finals credentials with a 32-point victory.

The long and winding road ends for seven clubs today but two key battles will have a major impact on the final structure of the MPNFL Division-2 finals series. Langwarrin has worked hard to have its destiny in its own hands, requiring a home victory against Pearcedale today to secure a long-awaited finals berth, while Chelsea will have a top-three finish in its sights when the Gulls roll out the welcome mat for Hastings. There are two other games that will have a bearing on the top five, but Red Hill should prove too strong for Devon Meadows at home and Karingal will have a win over bottom-placed Crib Point. But it’s the Kangaroos and Seagulls who carry the whiphand today. Langy put itself into the box seat with a strong victory over Somerville last week, highlighted by a stunning 8.2 to 1.0 second term. But the foundation was built by a sturdy defence in the first quarter, with Mitch Cuthbert, Kyle Busuttil-Inglis, Matt Peynenborg, Haydn Golby and Jason Curry keeping the Eagles to a solitary goal, despite kicking with a three-to-five goal breeze. Dan Wehner provided an added bonus, sneaking through a setshot at the non-scoring end of the ground and the Kangas were on their way. They opened up the throttle in the second term, stretching to a 40-point lead at half time before cruising home to a 22-point victory. Hastings remains united but needs a lot to go its way this afternoon.

Footy Preview - Division 2 Chelsea picked precisely the right point of the season to play it’s best football against Karingal last week and will need to back that up when the Gulls welcome Hastings to Beardsworth Avenue today. James Brain had the Gulls fired up from the outset against the Bulls, leading by 18 points at half time before running away with the contest with a clinical 6.0 to 1.1 third quarter. The windy conditions played havoc with goal-kicking last weekend but Jack Francis, who kicked four, and Curtis Bywater and Lewis Krieger, with three each, made the most of their opportunities to suck the life out of the Bulls in the second half. It was a fantastic win for the Seagulls who just need to get across the line against the Blues to set up a cracking qualifying final showdown against Red Hill at Somerville next week. The Seagulls’ top-end talent really stood tall against the Bulls, with midfield generals Todd Gardiner and Reid Crowe in commanding form around the stoppages, giving Bywater and Francis some really good looks at the big sticks. Ben Holman continues to work his backside off in the ruck, while the sweet left foot of Brad Clark is finding targets with monotonous regularity off half back. Hastings need plenty to go right today. The Blues need Pearcedale to upset Langwarrin, and then get the job done themselves, to take their place in an unlikely elimination final against Karingal. We don’t want to promote gambling on these pages, but the Blues need $2.50 outsiders to get up in both games….meaning they’re more than a $6 chance of progressing beyond this weekend. We’ll keep our money in our pocket if that’s alright! Players like Paul Rogasch, Col McVeigh, Steve Robb, Aaron Vinson and Jake Hewitt are all capable of causing an upset for the Blues – but the Gulls will prevail by 25 points and end Hastings’ season for good. Red Hill has played some fantastic football to grab hold of second place on the ladder and will look to cement that lofty position against Devon Meadows at the Red Hill Showgrounds today. What a wonderful second half to the season the Hillmen have had, winning nine of their last 10 games – including an impressive one-one record against Dromana. The Hillmen are going to take a truck-load of confidence into this year’s finals series with quality players in nearly every position on the ground. Jamie Mollo has some star-quality at his disposal in the form of Jono Ross, Chris Irving, Dylan Hoare, Jake Mold, Jonah Siversen, Ben Hughes and Sean Marchetti, but also has a core group of soldiers that would give their left arm to be part of a drought-breaking premiership campaign. Jake Mitchell has played every game this season while

Dan McNamara, Marcus Dal Lago, Harry Wynn-Pope and Tom McEncroe have all played integral roles in the Hills’ recent run of success. Devon Meadows’ coach Glenn Michie will be hoping he can rally his troops for one last great effort today before handing over the reins. The Panthers shot themselves in the foot against Tyabb last week, kicking an incredible 2.10 in the second quarter to waste the dominant possession count they had around the ground. Joel Hillis, Pat Harmes and Troy Aust were terrific for the Panthers against the Yabbies, while Mat Fletcher and Michael Theodoridis – who kicked four – have more than paid their way in their first seasons in the red, white and black stripes. But Red Hill will celebrate a fantastic home and away season with a 27-point victory. “Tyabb will win six games and finish level with Somerville, Rye and Devon Meadows in 2018.” That sentence, which would have been met with rapturous laughter at the start of the season, is now a realistic possibility of happening as the Yabbies host Somerville at Bunguyan Reserve today. You have to know where the Yabbies have come from to fully appreciate the size of their achievement this year. Yes, we know, they are about to finish 11 of 12 so we can’t go over the top, but it’s worth remembering the Yabbies came in with a two win, 66-loss record from their last four seasons of footy. That’s right – two wins in four years! Aaron Pacey and his coaching staff have done a wonderful job of building a competitive unit, with longtime loyal locals joined by a batch of hard-working and dedicated new faces to bring Yabbieland back to life. Ethan Rahilly, Jake Anderson and Brad Harbinson have endured the tough times, but are now sharing the good with players like Ash Planner, Brendan Doyle and Matt Ravenall. The Yabbies have already exceeded expectations, but are hungry for success and would love nothing better to finish off their season in style. Somerville won’t be pushovers however. Jed Sutton, Adrian Speedy, Nathan Gillis, Billy Rolfe and Ben Sedgwick all pose serious threats, while Justin Allsop and Lachie Haskett can also produce some damage. The Eagles will be keen to put this year behind them and concentrate on getting a healthy list and rebooting under a new coach in 2019. But the Yabbies will celebrate again – this time with a three-point victory in an after-the-siren thriller. Karingal failed the biggest test of its season against Chelsea last week but can regain its composure with a trip to Crib Point today to take on the Magpies.

Footy Preview - Division 2 The Bulls will be extremely disappointed with last weekâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s performance which saw them surrender a doublechance and make life very difficult come finals time. The quick legs of Mason Russell and the fast-thinking of Michael Burke were terrific for the Bulls against the Gulls, while Bryce Kellerman and midfielder Andy Mathers will take some great form into this contest. Crib Point was ripped apart by Dromana last week, giving up 52 scoring shots while creating just seven of its own. Ethan Smith is finishing his season in style, while Luke Herrington, Jacob Cook and Brad Davidson have enough pride in their bodies to fight this one out until the end. But the Bulls will win by plenty and build a perfect platform for an upcoming finals campaign. Itâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s the Bulls by 56 points. A lot of water has flowed under the bridge since Rye and Dromana kicked off the newly-formed MPNFL Division Two season on Good Friday earlier this year. Remember that game, where Rye kicked out to a 28-point lead at quarter time before the Tigers clawed their way back to level pegging at the final change of ends. An unlikely combination in 19-year-old Ethan Johnstone and a soon to be 38-year-old Ben Holmes kicked nine between them for the Tigers, as the now raging-hot premiership favourites kicked six in the final term to claim a hard-earned 23-point victory. Little did we know at the time what we were dealing with.

Footy Preview - Division 2 In retrospect this was one of Rye’s best performances of the season, a competitive performance against a team that will finish the season three-and-a-half games clear of its nearest rivals. Just think about that for a minute – three and a half games – it’s a remarkable season of dominance, better than Sorrento’s run of last year that ultimately led to a premiership. Johnstone and Sam Fowler, who both kicked eight last week, are looming ominously on the horizon, while Sam Geurts, Andy Howison and Billy Quigley will be keen for the second semi-final to hurry up and arrive. The Demons are limping to the line and need substantial improvement, and a little luck with injuries, to challenge for finals next year. Jye Lloyd, Adam Kirkwood, Tyrren Head and Harry Whitty provide a sound base to build on, while Matt McIndoe should give himself a huge pat on the back after filling in for injured ruckman Tom Baker in the second half of the season. But the Tigers are hungry right now, and they’ll win running away by 47 points.

Footy Notes Devon Meadows And just like that, the Devon Meadows Football Netball Club Season 2018 comes to a close. Before we go though, it’s one more big day of action today here at Red Hill. I’m sure Red Hill will just be ticking boxes today trying to get through the match unscathed but hopefully we can take it up to them, upset the apple cart and end the season on a high. Forecast is for terrible weather so I hope you’ve brought your jacket/scarf/umbrella/thermals/all of the above. Once again we thank all of our Coaches, Players, Volunteers, Sponsors and Committee Members for their efforts in 2018 and look forward to your continued contribution into 2019 and beyond. It will be an exciting year for the club with a new senior coach bringing a different voice to an emerging and exciting playing list. We know this year we were competitive with every team in our Division and i think the group really started to bond and gel in this last half of the season. Hope everyone has a positive and prosperous Summer and I look forward to seeing you again back at Glover Reserve in 2019! Presentation Night Saturday Sept 15, Rye RSL. $65 per ticket, please get your table organised, see Beelie, Jodie or Rachel to get a seat. Today is D day for the reserves, pretty easy sums, win today and play finals, lets see if the boys can continue their good form. Great win last week, with Sterlo kicking 5, BOG was Sammy Smith, closely followed by Hagan Rice, Scott Sterling, Josh Cameron and Kyle Lynch. Under 19’s had a great win and now need to win today, to make sure 3rd spot is theirs. Its been a great year for the under 19’s and now they are starting to get their full list out on the ground each week, they can give the finals a very good shake. Best last week, was Nick Rowson, Robbo, Dylan and Jacko Allen, Danny Vance and Jarrod Richards. The seniors let another game slip through their hands with some undisciplined play in the last quarter, when will some players learn. But full credit to Pearcedale who played out the game and were the better side on the day. Today will be Josh Moore’s final game as senior coach and we would like to wish Josh all the very best in his new role as Assistant Coach at Dandenong Stingrays. Josh has built a fantastic foundation for the club over the last

4 years and especially over the last 2 in playing many of our U/19’s in the seniors to gain valuable experience. Josh has been a fantastic roll model and mentor to many of the boys and we all wish you the very best. Major raffle, get your ticket now, with the chance to win $35,000.

Somerville The final round of the 2018 season is upon us. We expect a good crowd today when we take on Tyabb at the Yabby HQ. The seniors 2nd was poor but they stepped up in the 2nd half to bring the score line back within a few goals. It wasn’t enough to beat Langy, inaccuracy in front of goals again being our down fall. Soppy had a great game, with the Haskett brothers also among the best. The reserves hope to shake off last weeks game that saw them lose by 11 goals. Barnes, Shields and Young played well. The 19s had a huge win against Langy seeing them move to 5th on the ladder and hopefully secure a spot for finals. They must beat Tyabb this week! Nick Mason kicked 4 and starred, Moroney, Martin and Delmo were also good. It was an excellent effort by these boys and we look forward to watching them in finals. Big congratulations to our netballers who will have both B and D grade playing finals. With some finals being played at home this year we are looking for volunteers to help us out. If you can help please get in contact with Rohan. Many hands make light work! Tonight we will be having a function to celebrate end of season. All supporters welcome. Footy Notes Hastings The home and away season has come and gone, does not seem that long ago that the players arrived in Jan for pre season training looking forward to a successful season, now with the last game here its clearly been a far different season for the HFNC, From the start of the season with salary cap issues from 2017, then the financial situation of the Hastings Club in not being able to fund the Football/Netball season. The very sad passing of President Ken Stratton, it certainly has been a difficult and sad season for Hastings. But with everything that may not have gone right it still has been a reasonably good season for Hastings. The efforts of ,first Ken Stratton, then Karen Watson Gay who took over the Presidency when Kens illness became to much, Graeme Cole whos work in trying to raise the funds that were needed to finance the season, and the Committee of the HFNC, thankyou for everything you have done. Our 19s started the ball rolling tasting victory for the 2nd time this season. The boys had eleven different goal kickers in their convincing win over Devon. Fantastic to see Ryan Bull back on the park slotting two goals on his return from a broken collarbone. The reserves were looking to continue their hot form over the last few weeks but were jumped early into a strong breeze. Even with the breeze in the second quarter we were unable to make any inroads into the deficit. A totally different side came out in the second half and the boys lifted, led by 50 gamer Trev Jarvis we were able to keep Devon scoreless whilst hitting the front on the 3 quarter time siren. In the end we ran out 21 pt victors.

The seniors were pumped up after a couple of good wins in the earlier games and started well kicking 3.20.2 with the wind. They then kicked a couple into it all the while Devon (luckily) couldn’t buy a goal. After 1/2 time the conditions settled and the atmosphere exploded! Devon’s crowd got pretty vocal and they got their noses in front by 3 pts at the last break. A late bump on DIGS resulted in him being taken from the field on a stretcher. The boys rallied for him and managed to get on a roll. ANDO done his best sprinkler impersonation and bobbed up with a couple of crucial sossies to get the yabs across the line by 8 points. BINKS was enormous, DOYLE and SKIP were not far off him and HARBO done an outstanding job on one of the in form forwards of the comp.

Red Hill Ouch, ouch, ouch, what was that? That is the pointy end of the season and it is very interesting for all. The Ones have cemented a spot in the finals, this round will decide where. A win is vital, and a loss for Karingal or Chelsea could make things very interesting. Last weeks win in a wind that nearly blew the green shed to its new construction site was very satisfying. Sticks Ross picked up 3 majors, Chris Irving and Zach “Grape” Vines added 2 each. Jonah Siversen continues to repel any attacks by opposition, and the D.Mack is super efficient with the footy. Its all guns firing today in an effort to finish the regular season with a W.The Magoos are in a wait and see situation. Here is what has to happen. 1 Magoos win today by a healthy margin. 2. Dromana beat Rye, 3 Langwarrin lose to Pearcedale or win by a small margin. Easy peasy lemon squeezy. If the boys play strong footy like the first quarter against Hastings last week then they are unstoppable, but they need consistency. All the “P”’s were kicking the majors last week, Prinsy, Powelly and Painy. The Afro was in top form as was James Pittard and Hugh Campbell. The Unders won against an undermanned Hastings. Congrats to the boys who played for the opposition, takes character to do this. The Sandman kicked nine. Soup Campbell, and Buddha Fuller were great. Jake Hall played superbly then repeated the effort in the twos. Lets get everyone in the Green Shed in the last quarter today for last drinks. Mountain Goat.

Langwarrin Welcome to Lloyd Park and the last home and away game of season 2018, as we come up against local and fierce rivals Pearcedale. Having gained the position in the 5 last week, the possibilty of playing finals is very real. No longer relying on other results to go our way, we look forward to the challenge ahead of us.

Footy Notes Last week we played host to Somerville and came away with 2 wins. The reserves had Andy Johnson and Kieran Albanese both kick 5. It was good to see Kieran lead and mark well. Other good players included N. Whyte, N. Hammill and J. Longley. The 19’s went down by a fair margin in a game that we always knew was going to be tough. Our seniors, started well as we restricted Somerville to a low score in the first quarter. From there we were able to team up well. Every player again played their part. Jett up forward was again a focal point. Good too to see the goals shared amongst some of our defenders too. Great play all day from Tuddy, Church , Parker, Boof, Cuz and Cuth. Noticeable too was the return of Patto. There is a great spirit and purpose amongst the boys at the moment and we hope that this form continues at LLoyd Park today. Grand Final Breakfast : Special Guest Sam Kekovich. It’s a great morning, be sure to get yourself a ticket.

Crib Point The 19’s were the shining light once again on the weekend in terms of Crib Point football. After a 5-1 goal first quarter it was evident that the magpies had come to play on their home deck against Dromana. The tigers struggled to stem the bleeding in the second half seeing Crib run away 74 point victors. Tom Panich lead the charge up forward once again slotting 5 majors while Harry Waterfall chipped in with 3. The win secures the U19’s a finals berth in coming weeks, a great achievement thus far. The reserves side were severely undermanned on the weekend and it showed. After failing to register a score in the first half the signs of a comeback were few and far between. Unfortunately, they were unable to capitalize on a few inside 50’s to help raise their scorecard above 0 with Dromana finishing 98. Mitch “Cyril” Davis stepped into

the backline and provided some good intercept marking in what was a day with highly repetitive inside 50’s for the tigers. The senior side came out on the weekend hoping to emulate their first half performance from the last time they faced the 1st placed tigers. It simply wasn’t to be with the tigers denying the magpies of any such thing. A dismal day saw Dromana walk away comfortable winners with a 175-point victory. In a day smothered with negatives it was good to see club stalwart Cal Campbell get up for his 150th senior game – a super effort from a super man.

Pearcedale And just like that season 2018 has come to an end. The past few weeks have shown the seniors just what they can do when they have the belief and work together. Today as we head to Langy let’s keep this belief going boys! What a great day at Tractor Park last week in front of our sponsors with a win by the seniors, all netball and the women’s team. Thanks to the group who organised this day. It was a beauty. Congratulations to the winners of the raffle. This season has been a whirlwind, with the committee and the valued volunteers working hard to keep the Dales ticking along. Thanks to everyone for their hard work and support. Footy Notes Crib Point U19s easily account for Dromana who have an opportunity to redeem themselves today. The two senior teams produced some of their best form which all goes well for finals. Dromana Reserves were a in a different class to Crib Point producing one of their best performances of the season to hold them scoreless for the whole game and running out 98 point winners. 8 Goals each from the Rat and EJ with young big man Billy Geurts chipping in with 4 headlined a superb team effort that produced a 175 point win. Karingal And thus we come to the end of another home & away season...this time with a trip down Westernport way to take on Crib Point today Last week at home was another mixed bag with the Seniors, Ressies and SistaBulls lowering their colours whilst the Unders and netballers all saluted in convincing fashion The Unders are really hitting their straps leading into finals and will look to continue that form today; Mike’s boys know that the hard work is ahead and look forward to the challenge The senior list are just struggling for a little consistancy (injuries are definitely not helping though...) and both games will look to bounce back today to take some winning form into the wees ahead while the ladies will look to finish their season on a positive note having only just missed the final 4 Couple of big events coming up are the $5k draw on Sept 14 - tickets now on sale for players or committee. Netball Preview - Division 2 The final countdown By David Nagel Mathematical equations are just as important as great defensive pressure and a steady shooting-hand under the ring as we head into the final round of the MPNFL Division Two season. The top four is set, with either Langwarrin, Crib Point, Karingal or Tyabb set to hoist this year’s premiership cup, but the ladder positions need a little explaining. On face value the game between second-placed Crib Point and third-placed Karingal is for second place on the ladder today. The Bullettes can draw level with the Magpies on 56 points and would have a better percentage at the conclusion of the home-and-away season. But, due to the uneven nature of the competition due to Rye’s absence, Match Ratio (MR) percentages will determine the finishing order for clubs this year. Let’s simplify things! If Karingal wins today they finish with 12 wins from 16 matches played, with a MR percentage of 75. Crib Point would finish with 13 wins from 17 matches played, with a MR percentage of 76.47. So, win or lose today, the Magpies will stay in second position and take on Langwarrin in the second semi-final at Somerville next week. The game between the Magpies and Bullettes promises to be a beauty. Crib Point was super-impressive against Dromana last week, winning 67-25, while the Bullettes recovered from the previous week’s loss to Hastings with a 57-22 triumph over Chelsea. The Magpies, the reigning champs, are building nicely at the moment with Tessa Moncrieff in outstanding form in defence and Ebony McDermott also in good touch. Shaye Williams and Katja Jansen are others to have put in a big effort this year and they’ll be keen to finish off their seasons in grand style against the Bullettes. Karingal has had an even mix this year with no player playing more than 11 games. Bridgette Barry-Murphy, Renee Brewster, Abuk Kenyang, Courtney Osborne and Madi Capsalis have shone for their team this year under the coaching of Jess Whitfort. This will be a great game to watch, and it’s the Magpies to win by three. Tyabb will look to round out its finals preparations with a strong performance against Somerville today. The Yabbies ground out a tough victory against Devon Meadows last week, overcoming a determined opponent to move away with the win in the second half. Birgitta Nemaric, Dani Slaughter, Keira Wills and Kellie Anderson will be key players for the Yabbies in the finals and they’ll be keen to put their best foot forward today. Huge injury concerns have stopped Somerville from reaching the preliminary final heights of last year, but

players like Jaimee Peney, Briony Kelly, Dani Planner and Sara Tanner have given everything they have for their club. They’ll do that again today, but the Yabbies will secure a nine-goal victory. The game between Red Hill and Devon Meadows shapes up as a close one with both teams keen to score their sixth win for the season. Red Hill has struck form in recent times, with all the hard work of Sienna Wills, Emilie Baird, Meg Hamill and Nicola Mold starting to come to fruition. Wins against Dromana and Hastings have the Hills alive with the sound of music! But can they defeat Devon Meadows today? Lucy Hoogenboom, Chloe Birch, Nat Fallon and Bryoni Hardeman would love to secure the four points in the 200th game of club favourite Jenelle Bain. Players lift for milestones, especially for players like Bain – but Red Hill has been in terrific form of late and will put a small dampener on the party. And Hastings will look to finish its season on a high when the Blues travel to Chelsea to take on the Seagulls. The Blues finals hopes came crashing down last week, but the loss to Red Hill won’t take away from a pretty solid season of netball. Madelina Nyoul, Armani Buskermolen and Helen-Margaret Ashin have been superb for the Blues this year, while Darcy Lambert and Nicole Ram have also played significant roles in the season. Chelsea has caused a surprise or two this year and can’t be taken lightly. Lisa Donnellan and Katja Jansen have led the way for the Gulls, while Zoe Larrieu, Rachel McLennan and Julia and Verona Kaitani have all had some great patches throughout the season. But it’s Hastings to finish on a high. Dromana’s season is finished, while Langwarrin has the week off to prepare for next week’s start to its finals campaign.

Netball Notes Somerville It was ice cold at Langy, but we were fired up and ready to put in the hard yards to take away some well deserved wins. D Grade - Well what a difference a week can make! The girls were up and about and ready to show Langwarrin that they are a definite finals contender and didn’t we do just that! The girls are looking to take the same intensity into the game today against Tyabb, and to come away with the last win before starting off their finals series. C Grade - The ‘Cocial’ girls were pumped for the contest against Langwarrin, and started off strongly. Even with some great passages of play, it wasn’t quite enough to take away the win. Today we taken on Tyabb and will be aiming for 4 great quarters and to finish the season off on a high. B Grade - It was a physical game last time we met Langy and this week was no different. The girls walked away with another win, and with one game left today against Tyabb, they will be looking to iron out those small creases to be at the top of their game for finals. A Grade - The A Grade girls came up against ladder leader Langwarrin on Saturday & put in a fantastic team effort to finish with only a 12 goal margin. Today they take on Tyabb to finish the season, and would love nothing more than to cause an upset. This week against Tyabb will see our D and B sides battling hard to continue their form into finals, and they will do nothing less. Everyone is ready to fight hard today, and we hope to cause some upsets. #BRRRK

Pearcedale It was with much positivity that I announced in last weeks column the continued growth and performance of our teams over the last month. Last Saturday was further evidence with all four teams having a win, a feat that has not been completed for some time. Congratulations to all players, coaches and officials on achieving such a great result. The last game of the season is upon us with the exceptionof our 17s who have finished the season on top of the ladder and will be playing finals. Once again this weekend we look forward to another strong performance from our panthers against a benchmark club in Langwarrin. Red Hill What a day we had as we welcomed Hastings to the hill . Our U/17s started slowly with both teams being top 4 teams this was to be a real curtain raiser . But with Redhill not getting our usual momentum happening Hastings ran away with the points . If our team wants a flag this season they need to raise the bar throughout the entire court . A great game from the D grade girls, with their second win against Hastings. The season has definitely finished on a high note with all the effort throughout the season really paying off. Congratulations to both Lucy’s for their best game of the season. Looking forward to the last game of the season! Our C grade coach gave new challenges to the team this week with giving many girls opportunities to play positions they haven’t played before . Taking girls out of their comfort zone seems to lift our team to the next level & happy to see the win for Redhill . B grade played a strong game this week to prove to themselves how capable they are . Netball Notes Rye

Crib Point U/17 have moved from strength to strength this year. Really growing as a team. They created plenty of defensive turnovers & played a strong game. BOC went to Ciara for a stand out game. D Grade knew coming into this match that it would be hard & physical. We had an outstanding first half, but allowed Dromana to ran away with it in the 2nd half. BOC Meg for an outstanding game in WD. C Grade lined up against the top side & really took it up to them. Like in D Grade it was a physical game, & the girls remained competitive & positive despite some challenging calls. BOC went to Rach for goalling under some intense pressure. B Grade had a great team game, with every member fulfilling their role. We were challenged & the girls responded, dug deep & fought it out. BOC went to captain Kateo for her steady head & control in defense. A Grade started out strong, not giving Dromana an inch. The girls demonstrated seamless play, especially when transitioning the ball out of defense. BOC went to GK Tessa. Last week we saw another netballer reach the impressive milestone of 150 games. Congratulations to Fiona White who has played with Crib Point since the competitions inception in 2009, has been team captain, netball coordinator & club treasurer. Fi is one of the fittest & toughest girls in our squad. Last round on the 2018 calander today ladies and it’s a tough one up against Karingal. Let’s use today as preparation for the finals. GO CRIBBY!

Rye Demons came up against rivals Pearcedale last weekend. All three teams came home with a win last time we played them. D grade had a slow start but kept in the game. Pearcedale then scored off Rye’s errors and pushed the lead out. Pearcedale took the win for the day! Best on: Jodie and Alannah C grade unfortunately didn’t have there full side last weekend, so was very challenging to play there normal game. Demons kept chipping away at the score board but in the dying minutes Pearcedale kept the lead and won. Best on: Jasmyn and Emily B grade had a good start but in windy conditions it was hard to score. Demons kept pushing through and tried to keep within range. Pearcedale were just that bit better and got over the line. Best on: Meg and Miranda 2019 is fast approaching and we couldn’t be more excited!!! We see a make over at Rye over the summer break, with new courts and shelters being done! We couldn’t be happier about the change and we would like more people to share this moment with in 2019! If you are looking for a fresh start at a new club, maybe wanting to start Netball again or most of all just wanting to join Netball for the fun factor, then Rye will give you just that! Netball Notes Tyabb

Last time D Grade met Devon we came away 2 goal winners, unfortunately the result was flipped this time around. The girls played some terrific netball but let themselves down with decision making. Kenz played out of her skin with her best performance of the year, taking intercepts and feeding the ball beautifully. It has been a delight working with the squad this year. The development & improvement of the girls has been credit to their hard work at training & respect for their teammates. C grade put together another consistent performance this week and came away with a one goal win. Lace & Lauren combined well in defence and Sterch’s ability to read the play and combine well with Brooke in goals enabled us to make the most of our opportunities. We look forward to going for 3 in a row to finish the season on a high. A new look goaling circle in B Grade team again and the team took some time to adjust, however the defensive pressure from everyone down the court was impressive and kept us in the match. Some costly errors at crucial times proved to be too much for us to overcome against a tough opponent. In A Grade, Devon took it right up to us for the majority of the match, however, it was pleasing to see just how well we were able to fight our way through some errors and lapses in concentration. Once again some impressive patches on play and some super defensive pressure allowed us to move away from Devon on the scoreboard in the second half. Presentation Night - Fri Aug 31st

Dromana Well here we are at the last Home and Away round of the 2018 season and even though the finals haven’t started I would think any one would have to agree it has been a successful year for the Tigers with four of our five netball teams about to play finals. Today we finish as we started playing Rye and the club would like to take this opportunity to thank our many sponsors for their support throughout this season and hope they can get the ‘finals feeling’ going in their business premises. Our last round saw the A Grade well beaten by the Crib Point and an end to their season as Rye do not field an A Grade team. B Grade also suffered a narrow loss against a side below us on the ladder. Maybe a wake up call before finals. The C Graders gained a good win against fellow finalists with D Grade also producing the goods against a team attempting to make the final 4. Dromana U17s had a big win and are well entrenched in 4th position on the ladder and come up against 2nd placed Hastings in this round.

Good luck to the teams playing in the last Home and Away round and four wins would be a good end to the pre finals season. EVENTS TOMORROW - Major Raffle Draw function starts at 1pm. Devon Meadows

The sun was shining and wind blowing as we faced Tyabb in our final home game of the year. A Grade: The girls pulled together from training, really focused on the game ahead. The game was like a tennis match. We had possession and maintained the pressure on the ball. A few too many turnovers saw Tyabb convert the opportunity to get a lead of 9 goals. Our game challenge was achieved by each player doing their job over 4 QTR’s. A huge improvement from the first time we played. BOC Bryoni Hardeman B Grade: Last time we played Tyabb we were on the end of a big loss, despite this the team went into the game with belief. When we played steadied and controlled netball we found the ball opened up into the goalers sweet spots. Heading into the last half it was tight. Cool heads, defensive pressure and strong angled drives saw us take the game by 2 goals Each of the girls played their role in getting us the win. Super awesome effort! BOC - Zoe Carroll C Grade: Last time we faced Tyabb the game was tight and the game didn’t disappoint. The girls started off fierce, with some aggressive defensive pressure and strong teamwork, however Tyabb took a 1 goal lead at QTR time. For the next 3 Qtrs we were unable to split the teams, with Tyabb coming out on top by 1 goal. BOC Kylie Hameeteman D Grade: Taking on the yabbies was always going to be tough with Tyabb sitting higher on the ladder. With some great ball movement and defensive pressure across the court the girls took the lead. A huge credit to all the girls, keeping level heads and continuing to fight to make sure the walked away with a win. BOC Amanda Michie Under 17’s: Our girls started strong and successful leading the game at the start of the quarter but he powerful and determined Pearcedale powered away in the 2nd and 3rd quarters beating us 50-10. BOC Jess Piper Well time does fly when you are having fun, the final round of the season is upon us. Today to end the season on a higher we get to celebrate a milestone of one of our ‘OLD’ Devon Meadows faithful. Today Jenelle Bain takes the court in A grade in her

Netball Notes 200th game and achievement that will also earn her a life membership. Jenelle first started back in 2002 and a junior and has been a committed and loyal member since then. Jenelle was involved in our only Junior premiership back in 2002 and again as a Senior player in the C grade premiership side in 2016 where she was judge Best on Court. Jenelle bleeds Red, Black and White and her passion, commitment and loyalty is second to none both on and off the court. We wish Jenelle the best of luck today. Make some time to get across to netball at 1:15pm to support Jenelle and the A grade girls against Red Hill and celebrate this great achievement and finish it off back in at the club rooms that night to celebrate with Jenelle and reflect on Season 2018. Award this week going to Jorja Gay is goals who continued to work hard and scored well. B grade had a great hard fought match and really highlighted some great netball from both sides. Facing Chelsea this week and really hoping for a win to finish off the season. A grade faced a very strong Red Hill side, being struck with down injuries they couldn’t match it with them going down by 7. They fought hard to keep their finals campaign alive but it wasn’t to be. With such a young side our 2019 looks very bright.

Langwarrin Round 17 saw us take on Somerville. U/17’s kicked started off the day playing against Karingal, although the girls tried hard unfortunately Karginal were too strong this time. Langy lost by 9 D Grade was a frustrating game for our girls, unfortunately our girls couldn’t get into playing their game and rather let Somerville dictate the way the match went. Losing by 21 C Grade again came out firing. The girls really played as a team and it showed that when we go out and play as one anything can happen. Langy by 12 B Grade, Another frustrating game. Going a lot like D grade, things just seemed to fall Somerville’s way, which was frustrating our girls. Langy lost by 11 A Grade went out and fought hard from the first pass. Great to see Emily Zeuschner’s return this week and back to her best. Making it hard for the Sommie girls in the ring. Langy by 20 We can’t wait to take on Pearcedale in the ‘Bushmans Cup’ this weekend and hopefully come away with some more strong results.

Hastings The U17s Had a good win this week in fierce match against a skilled Red Hill side. We stuck to our own game plan and finished ahead. There is still plenty to work on at training and we will continue to progress our trainings and commitment to improvement. D grade had their best match for the season scoring 21 goals and really taking it to Red Hill. Unfortunately a lapse in the third quarter cost them any chance of a win. The club is super proud of the progress you have all made. C grade had a tough day on the court against Red Hill. A few silly mistakes early in the game gave them the edge to pull away. The team knuckled down in the last quarter to double our score from the first three quarters; It was rewarding to see what they are capable of.

Sturt shines on Debut Mt Eliza forward Sam Sturt made an impressive debut as the Dandenong Southern Stingrays all but sewed up top spot on the ladder with a 17-point win over the Northern Knights at Preston City Oval last Saturday. Sturt, who has had fantastic seasons for both the Peninsula School and the Redlegs under-19s, kicked a goal with his first kick in the TAC Cup, the highlight of a sluggish first quarter from the Rays who trailed at quarter time. The Rays were wildly inaccurate in front of goal in the first half, kicking 2.11, to trail the Knights by eight points at the major interval. The Rays had a purple patch in the third term, kicking six goals straight at one stage to take a 34-point stranglehold on the contest at the final break. The Knights fought back with the breeze at their backs in the final term but the Rays held on to continue a great run of form in 2018. Bailey Williams booted two goals, and while his highlight reel continues to build each week it was his below the knees work and defensive pressure that stood out last weekend. Fin Bayne had another best-on-ground performance playing more midfield time this week, as well as kicking two majors of his own. Captain courageous Campbell Hustwaite once again led the way, lifting his team mates in the second and third quarter, pumping the ball inside 50 with monotonous regularity. Stingrays Talent Manager Mark Wheeler knew the Knights at home were going to be a tougher task than their position on the TAC Cup ladder would suggest.

“We knew the Knights at home with their inclusions would be a tough game, but our leaders were looking forward to the challenge when we presented them with the scouting notes on Thursday night,” Wheeler said. “It took us a little longer to adjust to their style of play, which is probably the most disappointing thing that we took from the game. Teams are doing a lot of homework on us - being the benchmark of the competition right now.” Wheeler said the debut of Sturt was well deserved from a player from outside the system. “Brett Lovett is the coach at Peninsula and has been singing his praises since we watched him at the start of the season in round one,“ he said. “It’s a great story once again, with someone outside the program just digging in -head down, bum up, and applying his craft with the aim of getting better each week. There is a bye this week in the TAC Cup for the Vic Country Under-17 Futures game, as well as the APS/AGS Representative School game that will see TAC Cup players from the Stingrays participate. After the break the Stingrays travel to MARS Arena, Ballarat, to take on the Geelong Falcons on Saturday 18 August at 12.30pm.
