AFL South East Just like every footballer and netballer who participates on the AFL South East sporting fields this weekend, our umpires will endeavour to produce their very best.

We welcome a new team from Pakenham and wish the club well as it joins the fast-growing popularity boom that is women’s football.

And, just like those footballers and netballers, every decision won’t be perfect with a split-second to decide whether to blow the whistle or wave it around in the age-old signal to ‘play on’.

While on the women’s game, it’s great to see preparations in full swing for the interleague clash between our SEWF girls and the Northern Football League on May 19.

Our umpires play a huge role in community sport. This weekend we celebrate our umpires - the 582 men, women and up-and-comers who patrol the AFL South East Region on a weekly basis – with the 2018 Community Umpiring Week. On Wednesday night, members of our local umpiring community were lucky enough to have several currentday AFL umpires facilitate training sessions at local venues. Hayden Gavine, Chris Gordon and Shane McInerney visited Kananook, while Craig Fleer, Andrew Mitchell and ‘Razor’ Ray Chamberlain took control of the session at Carlisle Park in Cranbourne. Our local umpires received a huge buzz from having those elite umpires in attendance. We wish every one of our umpires well on the weekend. The second season of South Eastern Women’s Football (SEWF) begins this week with 29 teams from 22 clubs competing across three divisions.

And the girls are in good hands too, with coach Megan Snart sharing her knowledge and passion for the game with players from 10 different clubs across the SEWF landscape. Interleague weekend will be massive for AFLSE this year. Across the region we will field interleague teams in juniors (2), seniors (2) and women’s football (1), with under-17 and senior netball squads in SEFNL making for a busy but very rewarding time on the calendar. And what a round of exciting matches we have today. In MPNFL Division Two we have a top-of-the-table clash between two undefeated sides when Chelsea host Dromana in the Match of the Day. It’s a status that has eluded Chelsea for many years and it’s great to see the Seagulls back in form and drawing good crowds. It’s a very similar situation for the Officer Senior Football Club in the SEFNL. The Kangaroos host Narre Warren today, also a game between two teams that are yet to taste defeat in 2018. The Kangaroos have not played finals for 15 years and seem ready to break their drought. In netball, Tooradin-Dalmore host Beaconsfield in another contest of the undefeated, while Seaford and Sorrento are just one win away from setting up a huge clash of the same description at Sorrento next week. At the opposite end of the scale, but equally important to both clubs, we have Tyabb and Crib Point looking for their first wins of the season on the footy field.

Hopefully the contests will be as close and as tight as the battles at Olympic Oval last week, where Rosebud and Seaford put on a smorgasbord of close finishes. Rosebud won the under-19s by two points, Seaford answered by the same margin in the reserves before the teams couldn’t be split in an exhilarating finish to the seniors. AFL Vic Country Community Umpiring Round The significant role community umpires play in our great game will be highlighted this weekend, as AFL Victoria and the wider football community pause to celebrate 2018 Community Umpiring Week. Held from May 4 - 6, the annual event is designed to recognise those patrolling the boundary, manning the goal line and controlling the action out in the middle each week, and the contribution they play in our game. In Victoria alone, there are more than 7,000 registered umpires at community level, along with thousands of clubbased umpires, who commit their time and energy to allow those chasing the Sherrin the chance to do so safely. To celebrate the occasion, a host of AFL Umpires will forgo their usual training session and instead disband and travel to several community umpiring groups across Victoria to engage with local members and facilitate training sessions. These opportunities are highly valued by local umpiring groups where their members are provided with an extended chance to engage with members of the elite AFL umpiring panel. In addition, a number of young developing community umpires will head to IKON Park to develop their skills and knowledge of the game in a special coaching session under the guidance of some of the game’s national umpiring coaches. AFL Head Umpire Coach Hayden Kennedy will lead the event and take the fortunate umpires through their paces in an on-field training session and provide an insight to how AFL Umpires are coached. Furthermore, a host of lucky members of community umpiring groups will lead out their AFL counterparts at all of AFL matches in Round 7 and enjoy a taste of an AFL Umpire’s match-day experience. Furthermore, in all Round 7 AFL games, a host of local community umpires will meet the appointed AFL umpires prior to the game and have the chance to walk with them on to the ground. Community Umpiring Week is also another opportunity to encourage those who want to be involved in the greatest game in the world to take up umpiring.

Across Victoria, huge efforts are being made to attract umpires from all walks of life, with the development of Diversity Umpire Academies and Female Umpiring Academies growing from strength to strength. If you are new to the game, or your playing days are over, then umpiring is a great way to contribute to community football. Regardless of your age, gender, culture or ability, anyone can get involved in umpiring and enjoy the many benefits the roles provide. Footy Preview - Division 1 It’s time to make a stand By David Nagel Will the leg-rope extend to beyond breaking point, or will the bottom half of the ladder make a big statement in round six of MPNFL Division One football this afternoon? The top-five teams finish the first-third of the season in hostile territory today, paying visits to clubs that are desperate to claim a scalp and get their season’s back on track. If things go as expected and Frankston YCW, Sorrento, Mt Eliza, Frankston and Edi-Asp bank the points this afternoon a two-game gap will appear between the top and bottom teams in the competition. In a nutshell – today is the day for Pines, Bonbeach, Seaford, Rosebud and Mornington to make a stand on their own dunghills! The first of those contests takes place at Eric Bell Reserve where Pines host Sorrento today in a game that will give us a really good indication of where both teams sit right now. Pines coach Paddy Swayn will be disappointed with his sides’ first half against Frankston last week, falling 27 points behind before taking the second half by a point. The Pythons had 20 scoring shots to 17 after quarter time but just couldn’t apply enough scoreboard pressure to worry the Bombers out of the four points. Guy Hendry, Jack Fisher, Jacob Boyle and Daniel John all tried hard for the Pythons – but one man stood in their way. The Pythons simply had no answer to the unique heightand-pace blend of Jarrad Grant, who played his best game of the season in a five-goal demolition job. And Swayne will certainly have his hands full again today. You get the feeling there’s a steely resolve down Sorrento way to take an eight-game winning streak into its shot at redemption against Frankston YCW in round 10 on the Queen’s Birthday weekend. Like it or not – and the Sharks are probably already sick of hearing it – a huge part of the narrative of the 2018 season will revolve around what transpires that day.

Seaford ruckman Matt Terech has given his midfielders first use all season. The Sharks are half way to achieving their aim – and they won’t want a slip up here! Leigh Poholke returned to his brilliant best last week, booting a lazy six goals against Mornington, while Luke Tapscott chipped in with three and Zach Byrns and Nick Corp two each. Star forward Chris Dawes was well-held by the Bulldogs, but a sign of a good team is having the cattle to work a Plan B. Nick Marston, Jackson Grant and Marcus Gardner were all influential performers last week and should provide enough support to the big guns to get the Sharks home once again. The Sharks will head down the highway with their fifthconsecutive win – this time by 28 points. Bonbeach is quickly running out of chances to get its season back on track but can start its resurrection with a victory over Frankston Bombers at Cannes Avenue.

Footy Preview - Division 1 The Sharks have failed to impress against the other teams in the top five and will need to rectify that situation against the Bombers. A win here could build real momentum for last year’s runners-up with winnable games against Mornington, Seaford and Pines to follow. But something needs to click – and needs to click in a hurry. The Sharks could manage just four goals against powerhouse performers YCW and Sorrento before upping the ante slightly with a nine-goal effort against Mt Eliza last week. Trent Dennis-Lane has upheld his end of the bargain, booting 15 goals for the season, while Shane McDonald has also chipped in with seven majors. But stop those two and you’re well on the way to stopping the Sharks from having any bite whatsoever. TDL and McDonald are getting very little support with Jo Fisscher and Lachie Stenning next best on the goalkicking list with three. That’s not going to cut it against the better teams in the competition – they need a more even spread. Steve Hughes will be scratching his head right now, because his Sharks do have the talent. Dennis-Lane, McDonald and Fisscher are leading the way, while Gavin Vassallo, Gary Carpenter, Luke Verma and ruckman Dylan Jones were some of the better performers against the Redlegs last week. The Sharks habit of falling asleep for one quarter continued against the Mounties, with a 1.2 to 6.5 final term allowing a 10-point deficit to blow out to 43 points at the final siren. The first quarter, where Bonbeach kicked 4.4 to 4.0, was a better indication of what the Sharks are still capable of. But the challenges keep on coming this week with the Bombers proving to be one of the most consistent teams in the competition. An opening-round two-point loss to Mt Eliza and a 26-point loss to Frankston YCW – after being level at threequarter time – are the only additions to the loss column this year. Wins over Mornington, Seaford and Pines have given the Bombers a perfect platform to take on a tough run of matches on the horizon. The desperate Sharks will be tough this week, don’t worry about that, before the Bombers face Edi-Asp and Sorrento either side of the interleague bye. We’re about to get a lot clearer picture of where the Bombers really do sit this year. Jarrad Grant showed all the signs of a top-class forward against Pines last week, booting five goals in a comfortable 26-point victory. The consistent Zac Longham kicked three, taking his tally to 140 goals since the beginning of 2014, while Sam Fox and Jason Kingsbury are all always dangerous commodities. So how do we pick a winner?

All pointers lead to a Bombers victory in this one, they’re in form, they’re consistent, and they give the feel of a team that just won’t let you down. So for Bonbeach to win it’s going to take something special. There’s just something about a good team having its backs to the wall that is appealing – and for no particular reason we’re going for the Sharks to turn things around with a nine-point victory. Mt Eliza coach Troy Shannon will be looking for three wins on the trot when the Redlegs travel to Belvedere Reserve to take on Seaford. One of the biggest questions hanging over any team in the competition this year was how the Redlegs would cover loss of key forward Justin Van Unen. And that question seems to have been answered emphatically. James Freeman – an understudy to Van Unen last year, booting 17 goals from 10 games – has blossomed in his absence, kicking 15 goals in a stellar start to the season. Freeman has found a partner in crime too, with Jordan Moncrieff matching his total after five rounds. Throw in Daniel Gormley and Jordan Capkin and there seems to be a real sense of optimism when the Sherrin heads inside forward-50. The Mounties were involved in some real pressure-cookers in the early part of the season but comprehensive wins over Mornington and Bonbeach would suggest the new faces at Emil Madsen Reserve are starting to gel as a unit. Win here, then send Rosebud home with its tail between its legs in round seven and the Redlegs take a five-two record into the interleague break – Shannon would have taken that at the start of the year. Seaford, well it had mixed emotions after last week’s draw with Rosebud. The Tigers had more scoring shots than the Buds, but when Robert Bos was streaming forward with just seconds left on the clock a Rosebud victory looked likely. The siren sounded, just beating Bos to the punch, with his kick dribbling just wide of the point post and out of bounds. Aaron Walton and Dean Williamson were superb for the Tigers last week while Matt Terech continued his sensational form in the ruck. The Mounties will need to be on guard in this one – but should get home by 21 points. Edithvale-Aspendale is the next visitor to Rosebud’s Olympic Oval and will keen to bounce back after a brave performance against YCW last week. The Eagles suffered a similar fate to Sorrento in round one, conceding a quarter-time lead to the Stonecats – who very rarely fail to convert. Angus Macquire, Tim Kelly and Michael Bussey were all terrific for the Eagles last week while Will Flavelle covered the absence of Brett Dore with a very handy four goals.

Footy Preview - Division 1 All things considered – the Eagles look to be one of the top-three teams in the competition right now. Today they take on a Rosebud outfit proving to be pretty stiff competition at the moment. Superstar performers like Greg Bentley and Brenton Payne have relished the step up in class, Rhys Pierce is a dangerous midfielder, while Fletcher Hustwaite and Sean Downie are the next generation of stars. The Buds looked awesome at times against Seaford last week but failed to convert a healthy half-time lead into a precious four points. Rosebud plays its ground well, but the Eagles should have too much class and bank another victory – this time by 25 points. And Frankston YCW is once again on the road, this time to Alexandra Park to take on Mornington. On paper this one looks tough for the Bulldogs who have yet to open their account under the tutelage of Simon Goosey. The Bulldogs came close against Rosebud, Frankston and Edi-Asp, but have dropped the ball over the last fortnight against Mt Eliza and Sorrento. They just need a win to get their season rolling. Players like Warwick Miller, Ryan Smith and Josh Halsall have kept their intensity at a high level and will need to begin well against the Stonecats…who might be vulnerable early. Wayne Capp and his team have played in some huge encounters of late and will be tested mentally more than anything else. Can they get themselves up for a game between the top and bottom teams in the competition? Familiar names like Byron Barry, Kyle Hutchison and Scott MacLeod were superb against Edi-Asp last week and will ensure a surprise result does not eventuate. It’s the Stonecats by six to eight goals.

Frankston YCW As the Seekers used to say “Rocking rolling riding all bound for Mornington” for our first clash with the Doggies in 2018. Although they are off to a ruff!! start we will be on guard for a bold showing. Last week we ventured to Edi Asp. Ground which to our delight was looking a picture as it basked in the sun. We also basked in the sun with wins by all 3 sides, no mean feat to do so at their home ground. The 19s brought home the bacon by 10 points to knock of the top of the ladder team in willing competition that saw an eventful end. The much revered Twos showed the Sea Eagles clean heals with a 43 point drubbing not what was expected from a

Footy Notes Pines

The State budget provides opportunity for womens sport to grow through serious grant funds. In regard womens football we have some clubs that have embraced early and are in a position to expand further. Pines FNC has plenty of interest and numbers of girl participation growing in the juniors but we are compromised by a lack of appropriate facilities. The junior rooms are nearly 40 years old, and barely suitable for training, so umpires and girl participation is compromised. The senior ground has much better facilities although no outdoor toilets or womens change rooms. At the same time we look on at our near neighbours and see millions of dollars invested in a local Soccer ground and wonder how they did it. We are advised the Soccer strategy has been sold to government as an important infrastructure for community growth and alignment between local clubs and pathways to higher competition.

we struggled to get our running game going but as the belief grew so to do the on field results, and it was a satisfied coach at the end of the game. Another big game today as we strive to continue our climb into the top bracket. The seniors picked up where they’d left off the week before with a commanding first quarter, kicking 7 majors to stamp there authority early. After that it was a tight tussle with Mornington turning the screws and making us earn every possession. The medical staff was kept busy as players were managed before what’s certain to be another huge clash today. Pines at Pines today in what should be a cracker in both grades. We set ourselves a goal 3 weeks ago with 3 away games in a row. Today is our chance to put the last piece of the puzzle together. Pines had been promoted in the new promotion relegation regime between Nepean and Mornington Peninsula leagues. So here we are 34 years later with the roles reversed. Sorrento Last week was another week on the road and another opponent we hadn’t seen in combat for a long time. It bought another challenge against a club that hasn’t won many this year but has been more than competitive in every game. The Scoobs continued their streak making it 3 in a row, an impressive comeback after a couple of early setbacks. Like the seniors it seems to be a very even competition so these early wins particularly on the road are gold. On a smaller ground than the previous week, at times

Certainly seeing the number of U19s at the player function Sat night was a great sign that they are becoming a tight unit and performances on field will certainly be on the improve. Footy Notes Mt Eliza Thanks to the Bonbeach people for sticking around after the games last Saturday. In perfect conditions, the U/19’s opened up with 6 goals to nil and only conceded another one for the match, culminating with an 8.3 last term to win by 132. Tom Baker booted 5 in a best on ground effort, Sam Sturt (5) capitalised up forward with 4 goals in the last, and other better players were Westy, Mark Colvin, Sean Parker, Ben Webster & Beau Galley. The Reserves once again dominated throughout, leading by 7 goals at 1/2 time and winning by 80 points. Chop was outstanding with his 4 goals, along with Trent, Bez, Aiden Smith and Brad Taylor. After a tight tussle for 3 quarters, the Seniors kicked clear in the last with 6.5 to 1.2 to win by 43. Moncrieff (4) and Freeman (3) led the way up forward with handy contributions by Gorms & Mitch McCarthy with a couple each. Cal Park was super all day, along with Coates, youngsters Breen, Luca Goonan (On debut) and Smally. Congrats to Robbie Turnbull who made his VFL debut last weekend and to Ned Cahill who debuted for the Stingrays. and then not scoring in the third the Unders kicked 3-4 and kept Seaford to 0-5 to seal a 2 point thriller! Aaron Colombo, Josh Ritchie-Crichton and Nic Sakalis lead the best in a great team effort. The Development Team had a red hot crack all day leading at every change. But with Seaford pressing late and the boys missing some easy set shots the tigers hit the scoreboard with 2 min left and left us with a 2 point defeat. Great performances from Bronson, Syd and the skipper Jonesy. In the senior game our team defence held strong and with quick ball movement we had the better of Seaford in the 1st quarter. This continued in the 2nd with BP staring up forward and Big Time giving the mids first use setting up a 6 goal lead. Unfortunately our work rate dropped away as Seaford dominated the scoreboard in the 3rd quarter to set a 6 point lead at the final change. The last quarter was a battle of defences with Pegg and Krumeich leading the way holding Seaford up with both sides scoring a goal each to finish with a draw. Bonbeach Mt Eliza proved too strong in the seniors, reserves and U/19s on the weekend. A big week ahead for the footballers against a strong Frankston Bombers team. Community Umpiring Week a real winner AFL South East and the Southern Umpires Association (SUA) had the rare privilege of having three current-day AFL Umpires attend a training session at Kananook on Wednesday night. Two umpires who cut their teeth in the SUA, Hayden Gavine and Chris Gordon, were joined by the highly decorated Shane McInerney as part of Community Umpiring Round. To celebrate the occasion, a host of AFL Umpires gave up their usual training session and travelled to community umpiring groups across Victoria to engage with local members and facilitate training sessions. These opportunities are highly valued by local umpiring groups where their members are provided with an extended chance to engage with members of the elite AFL umpiring panel. McInerney has umpired in two AFL Grand Finals and officiated in 24 finals all up. Gordon, who began with the SUA in 2003, has umpired more than 200 games and took charge of the 2011 grand final between Collingwood and Geelong. AFLSE Regional Director of Umpiring Carl Fletcher hoped the visit would encourage more people to get involved in a great part of the game. “To have the elite umpires of the AFL return to take training is a great boost for the local umpiring community,“ Fletcher said. “There are so many great opportunities in umpiring and

Netball Preview - Division 1 The close games keep on coming By David Nagel What a great round of netball we had last week with Seaford’s big win over Rosebud the only game decided by more than seven goals. And today’s round of matches could be just as tight, with two mid-range matches and a bottom-of-the-ladder clash between Bonbeach and Frankston set to go all the way down to the wire. The game between fourth-placed Mornington and fifthplaced Frankston YCW looks set to be a beauty with both teams looking to jump out of that middle-tier congestion and emerge as a genuine top-two contender. Both teams suffered tough but narrow losses against quality opposition last Saturday. The Stonekittens went down in a dour struggle against Edi-Asp, the 30-26 score-line telling the tale of a game that was dominated by the defensive structures of both teams. Steph Boulton (GK) and Tamara Bucca (GD) were terrific for the Stonekittens with Carly Withers, Stephanie Pahl and Brooke Cant applying stack of pressure through the midcourt. Holly Booth (GS) and Ashleigh Whitnell (GA) struggled to shake free of the Edi-Asp defence, but they weren’t the only ones to struggle on a day when scoring was made difficult. Mornington pushed the undefeated Sorrento all the way last week and will provide the Stonekittens with a really stern test. Candace Page, Katey Rudolph and Tess Haddock have been outstanding for Mornington this year and will lead their team to a three-goal victory. The game between Rosebud and Edi-Asp is also important for both sides, with the Eagles looking to consolidate a top-end position and the Buds clinging on to their finals hopes. Edi-Asp was brave against YCW last week with Christina Vickery (C), Nicole Lock (WA) and Caris MacInnes (WD) working long and hard to overcome an equally determined opponent. Some steady shooting from Emily Patterson (GS) and Brianna Hollis (GA) got the Eagles home in the end. Rosebud stuck with Seaford for a quarter last week before the powerhouse Tigers started to purr. The Buds were terrific early with Lauren Robinson (GS) and Nicole Hadgkiss (GA) taking full advantage of some great work from Bethany Leach (C) and Millie McDermott (WA). Expect another fast start from the Buds before an Edi-Asp fightback leads to a six-goal victory. Still celebrating its first win of the season against Mt Eliza, Bonbeach will look to make it two in a row when it welcomes Frankston to Cannes Avenue.

Rosebud and Seaford had some terrific battles on Saturday, including a hard-fought draw in C Grade. Louise Manders and her team thoroughly deserved their triumph last week, overcoming a spirited third-quarter comeback from the Redlegs to lead 44-42 at the final whistle. Stephanie Coy (GD) and Theresa Blaauw (GK) were sensational for the Sharks in defence while Manders and Zoe Summers were terrific through the middle of the court. Frankston was level with Pines last week but lost a lastquarter shootout by seven goals. Bev Ashauer and Sarah Muston were brilliant in defence for the Bombers and will need big games again to get their team across the line. Expect the Bombers to break their duck with a two-goal win. In other games, Sorrento will hit the road to take on Pines while Seaford is expected to continue its unbeaten journey against Mt Eliza. The Tigers are a powerful unit at the moment with Ashleigh Mitchener and Nichelle Liepa enjoying being at the pointy end of a well-oiled machine. Rachel Cosans is having a great season for the Tigers while Tracey Dell (GK) and Kara Hargrave (GD) have been dominant defenders throughout. Madelyn McDonald and Jamie O’Hare will give it their all for the Redlegs, but the Tigers will be far too strong. And Sorrento will set up a round-seven showdown against Seaford with a victory over Pines at Eric Bell Reserve. Maddi Blackburn and Ashlee Boyle will be up for the fight for the Pythons, but Sorrento has too many big guns to conquer.

Netball Notes Division 1 Sorrento Neither team could drop their guard on Saturday as we battled it out in a tough game, resulting in a thrilling win by the Sharks A Grade. The Sharks got hungry in the second half, not willing to accept defeat. The pressure was on & we responded. Gemmas’ debut was exactly the lift the team needed. The young gun defender displayed sheer grit & exciting talent. It was a fast & physical match both teams displayed fierce competition but an exciting last quarter saw the Sharks walk away with a tough 4 goal win. Best on were Hannah, Gemma and Maddi. After a slow start, B Grade turned it on in the 3/4 after an inspirational speech by birthday girl coach Danni. Strong passing & quick leads in attack we came home strong & finished with a win! Gemma & Jen killed it in defence, Tayla & Mikkea dynamite in mid court & both Anna & Tiahn turned up the heat in the goals. Best on Anna, Gemma and Jen. A tough game for the C grade today. A physical & demanding game allowed the Sharks girls to show their competitive side & skills. Unfortunately, we did not come out on top today, but some very positive plays were made that allowed us to win the final quarter. Best on Brooke, Sarah and Holly. With D Grade coming off two wins we knew we were in for a hard slog today against an undefeated Mornington & it was. Frankston YCW Last week we facd Edi Asp and while in A grade it took a while for both teams to get a score on the board we managed to stick within a goal coming into 1/4 time. Despite many turnovers from the defensive pressure we weren’t able capitalise on our opportunities. Credit to all the girls for not giving up and working hard against a very competitive side. BOC goes to Boults for her amazing defensive pressure. It wasn’t the greatest start for B grade. We had 17 turnovers in the first quarter in which we converted 2. We need to work on rewarding the hard work and converting on the first opportunity. Unfortunately we let

Edi dictate the play too much at times. BOC goes to KP for her continuous drive through the middle and always providing an option. C grade got off to a good start going goal for goal during the first quarter. During the second quarter we turned the ball over however we struggled to consistently transition the ball down the court safely to the attack end. The girls continued to work hard but fell short at the final whistle. BOC goes to Holly. D grade game was incredible to watch. Edi almost had us but we kept showing time and time again that we do not give up. We knew we need to change things after a first quarter loss and came out to win the next 3 quarters. The 4th quarter Edi was tiring and we kept pushing though with some great passages and defensive pressure to win by 1 point! BOC goes to Bibsy who was consistent all game with great defensive pressure.

Last week saw us take on Frankston Bombers down at Baxter Park. Being new to this division we were unsure of what we were about to face. D Grade went in confident and with a game plan to try out all they’ve been working on in training. Their defense was strong but it was the huge improvement in attack that saw them take out a 20 goal win! BOC Maggie. C Grade started off strong and stayed with the Bombers all game, only letting it slip in the last quarter. The girls can take a lot from this game and plan on using it to fuel their game into next week. BOC Captain Rach! B Grade were strong from start to finish. Changes were made and the girls didn’t miss a beat and ended with a strong 10 goal win! BOC Amelia in defence. A Grade was an extremely physical and tight game throughout. Our girls stuck together and supported each other from start to finish and we couldn’t be prouder. Special ups to the amazing crowd who cheered our girls on loudly. Going into the last quarter even, they decided to make some changes that would either make or break the game. The girls ran out the game and won by 6 goals. Fantastic effort by BOC Maddie running the entire game in centre. Bring on this week and another 4 super tough matches against Sorrento!

Last week was a terrific week of netball against YCW. All games were hard fought & went down to the wire! There was a bit of confusion over who can call time in D grade but overall it was a good day as we walked away with 3 close wins. This week we make the trip to Rosebud, something we haven’t done since 2010! The Buds were always tough competitors way back then & we expect the same today! Good luck to all Eagles playing this weekend! Soar Eagles!! Road trip this weekend down to the Buds. What an adventure. We usually schedule our injuries for round 8-9, however, this year they seem to have arrived early. Casualty count; 3 ankles 1 concussion 1 broken wrist 1 shoulder 2 Achilles Throw in a couple of calf, hammy and shin splints and you could say we are an absolute rabble. I heard they have this new thing called “walking netball” at jubilee park – think we might need to investigate the potential for our injury prone to enter a team. Ah well, more importantly we had our first function of the season, woo hoo! This is where we really shine… after all is it really about the netball? Functions are a bit like Vegas, “What happens at the function, stays at the function” Although in this case there was nothing out of the ordinary to report, everyone was in form (unlike on the netball court) & Hungry Jacks got a work out on the way home. Whoppers – the ultimate! We take on the red legs this week – I wonder if they realise that sunscreen has been invented & they could have brown legs instead? (shout out to Dad for that material) Anywho – GO TIGES

Rosebud D grade - At home to Seaford, we were expecting an even game. The girls came out to play and that they did. With a strong first quarter every quarter the girls improved coming forward, looking after the passes, goaling and defence also played well. It proves when you play as you train, you can win. Well done girls. Best on Katelyn Stratham and Hayley Berryman C grade - We were expecting a tough game. And that it was. We started well, but mistakes crept in and we started to play with no structure. Still with fighting spirit we kept on fighting. Well done girls. Best on Tiahn Garlick and Tegan Turner B grade - Today we had a great team game, we did what we worked on at training and seemed to work well together. A few dropped heads but we picked it up in the end! Unfortunately we had another loss. Congratulations Holly Dunston and Jess Smith for getting best on. A grade - Well done girls for a hard fought game. We had a great first quarter but unfortunately they got away from us after half time. We had some great patches of play but unfortunately couldn’t come away with the win. Make sure you lock in the date for our Mid Season Ball to be held on Saturday 16 June (Mornington away). Netball Notes Division 1 Mornington A Grade made Sorrento work hard for their win last week. At one point it was even and the game was goal for goal. It was very exciting netball to watch, Sorrento, with their experience and talent all over the court kept their composure and just managed to come away with the win in the last 5 mins. Player of the match goes to Alex Newton who played on one the smartest goalers in my opinion and kept her constantly changing her game while working with Candace and turning over a lot of the ball. B Grade lost by only 8 goals. we are starting to piece it all together and are looking good as a team. Our goalers had their work cut out for them but kept backing themselves at the post, having to shoot over some great height in defence. And once again the defensive combination of Meg and Sophie gave us chance after chance to turn the game around. to Sorrento’s credit they were a challenging team putting their own defensive pressure straight back on us. C Grade had a great game winning by 21 goals, we looked on point from the very beginning, building on each quarter. BOC went to Olivia Gibson who played a blinder of a game. D Grade were back in great form again today taking a 20 goal win. The team produced some disciplined controlled netball. Lucy gave her standard 100%, along side Lara who provided strength and agility throughout the mid court.

Abby was holding her fort in the goal circle, not letting anyone else in. Down at the back of the oval Ash was sneaking goals in like she snuck a couple of durries at school. Mrs Uccello was getting sick of the attitude of some players so put them into detention. Recess was over, and so we went inside as grinning winners. B grade came to class eager to learn but couldn’t wait for lunch. Defenders Kaitlyn and Cell were answering all the questions right and Jade was supporting them through the middle. Tahls was getting touches like good church girl she is. It was finally lunchtime, but we were too scared of the bullies to go and play. A grade came in after lunch on a sugar high. Grade sixer Musto showed the preppies who’s boss, while Miss Exner was directing her class. Britt was feeding the circle like they didn’t bring lunch. A grade couldn’t quite finish their hard work, sadly they’ll have some homework to do. Next week we go on an excursion to the aquarium to swim with some sharks. Go bomber #COR

Frankston Bombers The teacher brought out snakes & ladders for our first activity of the day, and we were ready to play. D grade went to class and took on what the teachers told them. Front cuts were abundant and gold stars to the rebounding shooters. Teachers pet Rhi brought her intercept skills for show and tell. Whilst Kiera couldn’t sit still waiting for recess. The recess bell run and unfortunately it was too late to even up the scores. Recess began with lots of noise and even more running.

A Slice of MPNFL History The final piece of the puzzle By Doug Dyall

For almost 30 years - since I first became interested in local football and the paraphernalia that comes with it - there has always been one piece of the puzzle that has eluded me. That is until a few weeks ago, when fellow historian and good friend Vic Jeremiah had in his hand the item that I had found so elusive. Vic had the original publication of the very first MPFL Football Record, dated May 3 1947 Vol 1 No 1, probably the only one in existence. This unique piece of local football memorabilia makes for some interesting reading with team lists, fixture, message from League President Jack Gloury and some wonderful advertising of local businesses of the time. Finding this record now makes two copies of that first year of the record 1947, so maybe there is some hope that others may come to light. The message on page 3 titled â&#x20AC;&#x2DC;OUR FOOTBALL NEWSâ&#x20AC;&#x2122; made for some interesting reading that I think has some relevance even today given the saturation of social media. I love the thought of having to listen to 3AR at 6.30pm on Saturday evening for all the MPFL scores as stated on page 11. I would be happy to send to clubs of that time a copy of their team list on the day if so requested.

Interleague Football By David Nagel The interleague experience is beginning to grow on members of the South Eastern Women’s Football (SEWF) squad as it prepares for the big clash against the Northern Football League on May 19. The SEWF team will run on to Preston City Oval at high noon, following the under 19s game at 10am and prior to the senior game which features the number three and four ranked teams in the state. It’s going to be a huge day of football, one not lost on SEWF coach Megan Snart who said her girls are starting to feel the excitement of the build up to the historic clash between the two leagues. “A lot of the girls probably didn’t understand too much about the interleague concept but they’re all very excited now after the first training session,“ said the Eastern Devils premiership coach of 2017. “The calibre of girls we have is just outstanding and really indicative of the standard in South Eastern Women’s Football. It’s great to see so much talent, but it’s going to make it very difficult from a coaching perspective to trim the squad back – it’s not going to be easy.” A total of 62 players were invited to try out, with the squad to be trimmed back to 25 by game day. Snart said there was one particular strength in the squad that stood out at the first try out on April 18.

“We have a lot of pace in the team, I think that will be our strength, and some very skilful players who can use the ball beautifully,“ Snart explained. “But using that pace to full advantage is definitely going to be the key factor that we base our structures around. But really, for me, it’s all about the players learning something new and taking the opportunity to showcase their talents.” So what does she know about Northern? “It’s not my style to worry too much about the opposition, if you worry about them too much you tend to lose focus on what your own objectives are,” Snart said. “I’ve done a little bit of research on Northern but we’ll stick to our own guns and see where that will take us.” Snart said coaching against one of the pioneers of women’s football, Chyloe Kurdas, made the experience all the more exciting. “It’s a great honour and a little bit intimidating to be coaching against her to be honest,” she said. “She has one of the great records, and is respected right throughout women’s football so it’s going to be a real highlight to coach against her on the day.” The reigning SEWF Coach of the Year said she was getting genuinely excited about the game as it drew closer. “I’m extremely nervous about the whole thing but it gives me comfort that I am receiving great support from

SEWF to showcase its talent the league and we’re all on the same page about what is important,“ Snart said. “Rod (Women’s Football Operations Manager Rod Hamilton) has been fantastic, very supportive, and hasn’t put huge expectations on us to win at all costs. “For all of us it is all about showcasing the girls’ skills and showing the depth of talent we have in our league.” The SEWF squad will train at Casey Fields on Wednesday the 2nd and 9th of May before the final session takes place, including a jumper presentation, at Frankston Park on Wednesday May 16.

Setting sail on SEWF season two The highly-anticipated season two of South Eastern Women’s Football begins this weekend with nine MPNFL clubs now competing across three divisions. Seaford will field teams in all three divisions while Mornington and Edi-Asp will have two teams competing this season. Tyabb will compete in division two, with Frankston, Hastings, Karingal, Pearcedale and Red Hill taking on the challenge of an 11-team division three. The only new club in the competition, Pakenham, kicked things off with a Friday-night clash against Officer last night. The three premiers from last season all have tough starts in round one with division-one premier Eastern Devils hosting Port Melbourne, division-two champions Beaconsfield earning promotion and a trip to Chirnside Park, while Tyabb host Edi-Asp in its first home game since taking out the division-three – Development League - title. Good luck to all participating teams for the season ahead.

The most important kick in football By David Nagel “Give me a healthy list and let’s make the most of our opportunities when we get them.” While most of the pre-season work is done on recruiting, game plans, fitness and structures – there are a couple of bare essentials that coaches can’t control when the heat of battle begins. Injuries, or unavailability of players, and the ability of the forwards and midfielders to put the ball through the big sticks are two crucial factors when the win and loss columns are settled at the end of the season. Some coaches, like Simon Goosey at Mornington and Leigh Stewart at Pearcedale, will be nodding their heads right now. Pearcedale has used 33 players this year, more that any other club in the MPNFL, and has the worst record in front of goal converting just 32 of its 82 scoring shots. That’s a goal-kicking accuracy of just 39 percent – poor by any standards. The Panthers have already used eight players more than both Chelsea and Devon Meadows (25), and seven more than Dromana and Somerville (26). Devon Meadows and Somerville might have some explaining to do – but for Chelsea and Dromana that continuity has led to consistency of performance and a factor in their undefeated records and a meeting in the round-five Match of the Day. Crib Point (31), Karingal (31) and Red Hill (30) are the other teams in division two to have used 30 players or more – the Hillmen rectifying their situation somewhat with a 55-percent strike rate in front of goals.

In division one, Mornington and Pines have used 32 players each with Goosey and his great mate Paddy Swayn not having a lucky run. Sorrento on the other hand is clearly the most settled side in the competition with just 26 players taking to the field after five rounds. Swayn can comfort himself with the fact that his Pythons are striking at 55-percent in front of goal, equal with Mt Eliza as the best in the competition. Ironically, being coached by one of the great goal-kickers of all time, - who does say that he kicked at roughly 80-percent throughout his career – Goosey’s Bulldogs have just a 45-percent success rate. Rosebud is the worst in division one with 42 percent. So do these figures mean anything at all or is there really a direct correlation between bad kicking at goal and the win and loss column? Pure statistics would suggest that eight of the 49 games – or 16 percent of all matches – have been significantly influenced by efficiency in front of goal this year. We wonder out loud if handball receives, clearances and marks inside 50 have had a similar influence this year? Some coaches will say that the kick-out from full back, or the final pass into the forward 50 is the most important kick in football – and they probably train it and keep KPI’s on those factors all year. But what about the poor old kick at goal! It is certainly not taken too seriously at training, and very rarely seen on a whiteboard or mentioned at a quarter or three-quarter-time huddle. It sort of gets brushed aside as an acceptable part of footy. How does your team stack up in 2018?

Footy Preview - Division 2 Seagulls back in the big time By David Nagel There are many benefits associated with winning games of footy – just ask the Chelsea Football Club as it prepares for a blockbuster round-five clash with Dromana at Beardsworth Avenue today. Excitement, hope, and even selling out of food at the canteen are just some of the advantages of being undefeated in 2018. After several years in the doldrums, the Seagulls nest is alive once again. Chelsea sees itself as fortunate to have dropped to division two after winning five games – including the scalps of Mt Eliza and Seaford – in the Peninsula League last year. “I think we’re lucky to be in division two because we were close to winning a few more games last year,” said thirdyear player and first-year coach James Brain. “It’s been refreshing and enjoyable to be able to take some confidence into the pre-season. I’m sure that if we stayed in the higher division we would have lost a few players and who knows where we’d be right now. “The club is really buzzing at the moment - we had a huge crowd last week and we sold out of everything.” Last week saw the Seagulls make it four wins on the trot with a comprehensive 57-point victory over Tyabb – to set up today’s undefeated clash with the Tigers. “We definitely needed it,” Brain explained of the move to division two. “Every club wants to build a winning culture, but you need to win to do it, and it was difficult to do that on a consistent basis against the better teams in the top flight. “Everyone at the club is excited again, the young blokes are enjoying it and the older blokes are leading by example.” Brain took over the reins from Brett Dunne – now at Karingal – and set about building on the strong foundations that his former coach had laid. Dunne’s commitment to defence, and Brain’s more free-flowing approach, have combined for wins over Red Hill, Pearcedale, Hastings and Tyabb.

Langwarrin’s Shane Paterson takes a screamer against Devon Meadows. “He (Dunne) was fantastic for the club and built a strong culture that is holding us in good stead today,” Brain said. “Dunny was really strong on building things around a tight defensive unit and I’ve just added a few little things on the side. I didn’t flog the boys in the pre-season, it was more skill-based training and I think we’ve been able to keep possession of the footy a lot better this year. “But the main thing has been just letting the boys play, they’re enjoying it and if everyone is having a crack you’re going to win most games you play in.” The Seagulls have been well-balanced so far this season. Ben Graham and Simon Mitchelhill are holding down the key-defensive positions, while Brad Clark has been using his classy left-foot to full effect off half back.

Footy Preview - Division 2 Reid Crowe has been a handy acquisition in the midfield, allowing Brain to play a more permanent role at centre half forward, forming a three-pronged attack with Jack Francis and Curtis Bywater. Bywater has started the season in stunning fashion, taking advantage of more mobility after a productive pre-season campaign. “He’s lost a lot of weight and become a really explosive forward and I think there’s a lot of upside to come,” Brain said of his leading goal kicker. “He just needs to keep doing the team things and the goals will come…he’s a hard man to stop and he’s really set the example through the pre-season.” Dromana also has its dangermen with Ben Holmes and Ethan Johnstone in red-hot form with Jay Hutchinson also a damaging force. “Their area of strength would appear to be their forward line and our backline has been outstanding, so that could be where the game is won and lost,“ Brain said. “They’ve got some good quality midfielders as well, but I’ll just call that as I see it through there. “That’s the beauty of being out on the ground, you can spot trends in the game really quickly and do something about it. But hopefully it won’t come to that, we’ll just worry about us and hope to cause them a headache or two as well.” Brain said today’s performance would be the best indicator yet for the season ahead. “It’s going to be a big game, there’s a real buzz around the

place at the moment and the boys are really excited by the challenge,” he said. “We got the jump on Hastings, and set that game up in the first quarter, but we really haven’t put four quarters of football together just yet. We’re probably still a little confused as to where we sit but we will know a lot more after we play Dromana.” This one will be a belter, physical early, before both teams settle in for an arm-wrestle to the final siren…it’s the Tigers to ruin the party by five points. Somerville makes the familiar trip down FrankstonFlinders Road this afternoon to take on Hastings in a classic contest between the arch-rivals at Thomas Barclay Oval. There have been some great battles between these two clubs over the years, and this one promises to be another beauty. Hastings – well it is harder to read than a book on Chinese Arithmetic right now. Early wins over Crib Point and Tyabb really did prove nothing before four and five goal losses to Chelsea and Karingal put things in perspective. Are they really that far off the pace the Blues…or do they just have some improving to do? There are many questions that remain unanswered. Luke Hewitt has been a dynamo up forward for the Blues, booting 15 goals to date, while Paul Rogasch has been outstanding and was really missed against Karingal last week.

Footy Preview - Division 2 Tom Redmond, Jake Hewitt and James Marasco tried to pick up the slack, but the Bulls were simply too good. Today Somerville awaits, another team that has had rollercoaster ride to date. Andrejs Everitt would have expected his two wins against Crib Point and Pearcedale, but is probably one win behind the eight-ball after losses to Dromana and Devon Meadows. If the ledger becomes two and three today - the Eagles are in a lot of trouble one would have thought. They will go in confident after a dominant last quarter against Pearcedale last week, having 16 shots at goal, and with Billy Rolfe, Luke Rowe and Everitt providing outstanding options up forward. But this is a different and more difficult assignment – it’s the Blues by 13 points. Speaking of confidence – Devon Meadows and Red Hill will take varying levels of the precious commodity into a crunch game at Glover Reserve. The Panthers were very disappointing against Langwarrin last week, surrendering an eight-goal first term to trail by 43 points at quarter time. Glenn Michie will try and put some sort of positive spin on things – the final margin was cut to 37 points – but that first-quarter effort when the heat was on was basically noncompetitive. Experienced types like Mat Fletcher and Pat Boland tried to lead their team out of trouble…but the damage had been well and truly done.

The wash up is we still can’t trust the Panthers in big games. Red Hill did what it had to do against Crib Point last week and is building quite an impressive record. A seven-point loss to Chelsea stacks up pretty well right now, while 12 and 13-goal wins over Tyabb and Crib Point will have the Hillmen cherry ripe for this one. Sean Marchetti has two fantastic weeks, while Jonah Siversen, Jono Ross and Dylan Hoare will be keen to hit the ground running. After a tight struggle, Red Hill will win by 11 points. Even our tipsters can’t split the game between Rye and Langwarrin – going four each in a contest that has all the hallmarks of a close one at RJ Rowley Reserve. Langwarrin sang its song for the first time last week, and sang it proud after an impressive 37-point victory over Devon Meadows. Lachie Davies, Mitch Cuthbert and Josh Biggs were terrific for the Kangas, while Jesse Murphy provided a great target up forward with four goals. The Kangas looked nothing like the team that went sown to Pearcedale by four points a week earlier. So which Kangaroos outfit will Rye take on today? Players like Adam Kirkwood, Tyrren Head and Oscar Whitty should be ready for anything, because this game and the one against Red Hill next week will give us a huge indication of the Demons true credentials this year.

Footy Preview - Division 2 Tipsters

Somerville’s Justin Allsopp will need to fire for Somerville to roll Hastings. The recruiting has been done, the stage has been set – this is the day for the Demons, coming off a week’s rest, to fire on their home deck. And they will, leading to a 13-point victory. And Karingal will need to be careful when it makes the tricky-trip to Pearcedale. The Bulls handled Hastings impressively last week with Matt Stanley kicking five and Todd Farrelly and Andy Mathers producing dominant performances around the ground. But Pearcedale is a tough proposition at home. The Panthers led Chelsea at three-quarter time in round two and produced a great performance to roll Langwarrin by four points in round three. Harry Prior is emerging as a force in the ruck, while Dan Heijden, Luke Dalmau and Luke Daniel will be keen to send the Bulls home in a sad state. But Karingal’s class should result in a 14-point victory. And Tyabb and Crib Point will both be up and about this week, chasing their first win of the season at Bunguyan Reserve. The Yabbies have played some really good footy at times, pushing Rye and Hastings in the opening two rounds of the season. Jake Anderson was a standout against Chelsea last week while Matt Ravenall, Brad Williams and Ethan Rahilly will have their vocal chords ready to fire at the final siren. Crib Point just hasn’t fired a shot this year, and while Brad Davidson, Leon Mateariki and Ned Shannon will give their all for the black and white stripes it will all be to no avail. The Yabbies will win by 32 points.

Our U/19 boys went down by 14 points in a closely fought contest where only a few points separated both teams for most of the game. There were lessons to be learnt from the game & our players are certain to respond in the most positive of ways. With a new opposition that we have previously not played before our development team wanted to start well to set the tone for the match. It was a real arm wrestle with both defences dominating play. A debut goal from Connor Gray got us going & then a couple to the returning Paul Makris saw us in the contest but we couldn’t bridge the gap on the much stronger built opposition. The guys never gave up & scrapped hard for the full 4 quarters. The effort is there, we just now need to get the rewards of victory. The scoreboard in the senior match didn’t reflect the contest shown. The yabs had plenty of opportunity but couldn’t capitalise on forward half entries. Our defence had some winners in Skip Silk and Handsome who constantly repelled attacks and countered with their own dash. Az T and Rogan worked tirelessly & the man with the beautiful hair Ando kicked most of the score (3.2). Our boys from Bunguyan need to cut out the slow starts if we are going to be competitive. Rest up, reload & relish the opportunity to take on a new look Crib Point at home who are also in search of their first W of 2018. Last week Lloyd Park had a big crowd as we took on Devon Meadows in perfect, sunny conditions. Our President’s, Life Members and Sponsors lunch was a great success.Fortunately both of the early games provided good convincing wins to the Under 19’s and the 2’s. Best players for the 19’s E. Watts, J. Allan, N. Allen, K. Whitford, L. O’Halloran In the 2’s E. Parsons, C. Hanger, M. Windsor, C. Moore, A. Eggleston, S. Tanirau were amongst our best. We needed to be good from the the first siren in the seniors and we started well. An 8 goal to 1 first quarter showed we had turned up to play. Through pressure and solid performances throughout our team we secured our first win of the year. It was a good win too ! Lachie Davies,

Jesse Murphy with 4 goals and good play from all we ran out winners by 37 points.It was one of those games where everyone played their role. Fenech, Church, Biggsy, Patto and Tuddy were amongst our best. The club song was sung with much passion as we celebrated with winning first timers including our coaches. A wonderful effort by all involved with the 3 teams. This week will be another challenging week as we travel to Rye. In what will be a very tight and competitive year we hope that after a good week on the track this winning form, across our club continues.

Crib Point

Crib Point came up against another arch rival in Red Hill on the weekend. The U19 clash saw both teams struggle to get started but Red Hill begun to consolidate a lead in the second and third term. The hillmen finished 47 points up come games end. Nathan McCarthy was best afield for Crib whilst Cooper Wisken proved he isn’t living in his older brothers shadow with a second best on. This week the boys will be looking to hit back with a win against Tyabb. The reserves match saw Red Hill dominate a young Crib Point side last weekend. The hillmen set up well behind the ball and ran all over our boys across the ground. The effort of our boys was high but we weren’t able to match it with Red Hill at this stage. Connor “Rooster” Marson and Kye Espenschied were tough over the ball all day and provided good efforts. Walking away with a 99-point loss, the Crib Point reserves will be looking to put in a better performance against Tyabb this week. The senior clash saw Red Hill burst out of the blocks early with a 27-point lead heading into quarter time. The remaining three quarters saw the hillmen extend their lead to finish 79-point winners in the end. The battle was won throughout the midefield where Red Hill were on top for the majority. Jamieson brothers Myles & Kieran were good all day in different positions whilst Ethan “Simple Jack” Smith was gallant in defence. A real opportunity to put a win on the board this week against Tyabb, lets get around the boys! Go Crib!

Another day of cracking weather saw a bumper crowd on the deck watch a clean sweep onfield against Hastings last week. The Unders started the day well with a percentage boosting win, the Bulls kept rolling into the Midday game with a 4-5 goal win making it 2 in a row and the main game was tight at times but we kept the pressure on and got the job done by about 5 goals This week we’re at Pearcedale for the first time in many a long year and looking to take our winning form on the road. Whilst according to some “they aren’t even a real town...don’t even have a pub!” We know that Pearcedale are ready for a big showing today and we’re up to the task! Well, we went close last week and finally we managed to string 3 wins together on the day. great effort by all concerned and I’m sure there more to come as we move forward. 2 in a row for the under’s and no doubt these kid’s are on the right track, Best were Malane, Pidd, Giuliano, Brown and Jake Davis. The 2’s bounced back really well after letting one get away the previous week, new recruits Luke Shannon and Tom Fuller are pressing hard for promotion so the depth is there, well supported by Mitch, Luke Clark and Andy VJ,keep it going lad’s. The main game didn’t reach any great height’s but we still

managed to get the 4 point’s and you can only win. Huge positive for me was the effort’s of the 2 blokes that got promoted, well done to Trippa and Drilla for re-paying the faith, The senior coach is really standing up and leading by example, also well done to big Benny, Brad and new recruit Zane Carter. Huge test this week team and I’m sure we are up to it. No doubt match of the round so let’s all get to Headquarter’s and get right behind the troops. What a disappointing week in football and netball at Somerville last week. We could not get any wins on the board at all. We look forward this week to welcoming Karingal to Tractor Park for the first time in a long time. This week is the Suicide Awareness round. Suicide is the leading cause of death for Australians aged between 15 and 44, with around 3,000 people dying by suicide every year. That’s an average of eight people every day. For every suicide, there are tragic ripple effects for friends, families, colleagues and the broader community. It is important to talk about this issue, stay in contact with friends and loved ones and remember we all have an important part to play. Please see a player for a raffle ticket today to help us raise money for Beyond Blue, It Okay not to be okay and Headspace Frankston. Collection tins are in the bar and canteen. Good to be back on home soil once again after a 2 week road trip which started well in Somerville but didn’t quite end the way we wanted down in Langy. A bad first quarter cost us last week but we’ll be looking forward to meeting Langy again next year to show them what we are really about. We did manage to wash away most of the bad vibes at the Bogan Bingo function which was a cracking fun night, and big ups to Tom and Em for organising a great start to the year with the functions being well attended and very good times had by all. Looking to make a fresh start today as we welcome Red Hill to our patch of turf. If anyone remembers last year’s match, we owe them one as it was a nailbiting 1 point loss here in Round 16. ON THE ROAD AGAIN. Our travel record in the ones has not been great this year, so today is the day that we turn that around. Firstly thanks to all involved in a great day at the Hill last week. Past Players day, Presidents lunch, unfurling the U/19 Premiership flag and three great wins in the football, all under beautiful blue Red Hill skies. The Ones played a great game of pressure footy and loved the wide open spaces. Sean Marchetti picked up 4 majors and then the rest of the goals were shared around between 12 goal kickers, don’t say we are not a sharing, caring team. Harry “the Reverand” Wynn-Pope, Sean M and young Danny Allsop caught the eye of the vote givers. We welcomed Jake Bromley into the Ones for his first run. The Magoos had a rip snorter. The best thing about the 99 point win was the effort by all. Every player seemed to contribute in all parts of the ground. The backline of the two’s is proving to be a stronghold to be reckoned with. Only one goal allowed this week. Blake Thompson picked up 4 majors and multiples to Chris B and Billy “the Colonel” Sanders. The Unders rode the early pressure of the Cribby boys, then they turned on the gas to show they will be a serious contender this year if they stick to the process. A big get well soon to our legendary President Mick O’Rourke, who since our last game had his left knee replacement operation completed. In true Mick style, he had the knee done on a bye week-end and reckons he will only miss a week. Good luck Mick, hope to see you back on deck soon. Last week it was 2 from 3 in the footy, with the Seniors and Reserves both having good wins. The U/19’s only had 17 players, due to a few injuries and did well to nearly pinch the game, going down by 9 points. Kalani Ryan was BOG, with Ben Closter, Barnsy, Danny Vance, Jacko Allne and Zac Jennings all in the best. The Reserves are 4 and zip and travelling along nicely, Marcus Flash Gordon has had plenty of numbers to pick from and its great to see the guys missing out on a game running water or doing stats. Big games last week by Josh Gana, Gabe Nocella, Will Cooper, Ricey, Mitch H and Wheels. The Seniors were very good against a Crib Point team that had a real crack all day. Be nice to kick straighter todays boys and put more through the big sticks than the little ones. But a wins a win and we need to get two on the trot. Netball Preview Yabbies have the fire in the belly By David Nagel Tyabb and Crib Point will reunite today for the first time since last year’s grand final when the Yabbies and Magpies collide at Bunguyan Reserve. The Magpies won 43-29 in last year’s decider leaving the Yabbies with a bit of fire in the belly this afternoon. Tyabb was super-impressive against Chelsea last week, winning 59-27 after a tight first quarter. The Seagulls really did push the Yabbies in the early stages, with Verona Kaitani playing some fantastic netball in centre and Rachel McLennan and Julia Kaitani keeping the Tyabb goalers under wraps. But the Yabbies put the foot down after quarter time, scoring 50 to 19, with Birgitta Nemaric in red-hot form under the ring. Nemaric scored 17 goals alone in the third quarter, receiving great supply from the likes of Megan Williams and Kellie Anderson through the midcourt, while Caitlin Watson and Kayla Brown warmed up for this week’s showdown with superb defensive displays. Crib Point meanwhile was forced to dig deep to overcome a strong challenge from Red Hill. Led by Mia Newman (C), Georgia Vines (GD) and Isabella Cuming (GS), Red Hill led by seven at half time before the reigning premiers timed their run to perfection. Ebony McDermott took on the goal-scoring duties and scored 21 of the Magpies 25 second-half goals. Leah Moncrieff led the charge through the midcourt and will need to be at the top her game again today. These are always exciting tussles between the Yabbies and Magpies – this time around it’s the Yabbies, despite being undermanned, to bank the points. The clash between Hastings and Somerville will be a beauty with both teams coming in confident after strong wins last weekend. The Blues were sensational against Karingal, winning every quarter on their way to a resounding 67-41 victory. Armani Buskermolen and Helen-Margaret Ashin formed a great partnership under the ring, while Hayley Morton, Madelina Nyoul, Nicole Ram and Darcy Lambert were terrific at the defensive end of the court. Somerville had a tough battle with Pearcedale early before running away with a 46-25 victory at Somerville. The Eagles led by just two goals at half time before a 3011 second half put the four points beyond doubt. Danielle Planner and Kristy Marshall filled the large gap left by the injured Tayla Sharp, joining forces with Jaimee Peney (GK) to keep the Pink Panthers at bay in the second half. This game is crucial to both team’s finals aspirations – and we’ll go for Hastings to win a close one.

The ponytails were flying as Somerville’s Maria Neophytou looks for a way past Pearcedale’s Tara Monshing.

Karingal will be hoping to turn its form around against Pearcedale this afternoon. The Bullettes had no answers against Hastings last week but will bounce back hard with Jess Whitfort and Courtney Osborne sure to have sting in the tail. Pearcedale will fancy its chances of an upset here after pushing Somerville to the limit in the first half last week. Tahlia Coates was on fire for the Pink Panthers while Tara Monshing and Alannah Quint continued their fine form through the midcourt. There’s a lot at stake here for the Bullettes…and they’ll win by 10-goals plus. Devon Meadows will look to play four quarters of its best netball – instead of one – when it welcomes Red Hill to Glover Reserve. The Panthers were towelled up early by an impressive Langwarrin last week but fought back well, scoring 14 goals to 12 in the second quarter. The Panthers really clicked as a unit and if Janelle Bain, Emily Van Rooye, Alana McDonald and Nat Fallon can drag that sort of form out for a little longer the Panthers may have Red Hill’s measure. You get the feeling this one will be very close indeed… it’s the Panthers to just get the choccies. And the game between Chelsea and Dromana has already been decided with the teams locking horns on Thursday night. If we had to make a prediction we would go for the Tigers, who will be nice and fresh after resting on the sidelines last weekend. Chelsea started well against Tyabb last week and a repeat of that performance will probably give them the four points. But we’ll go for the Tigers to have won that one already. Langwarrin has the bye.

Netball Notes Pearcedale

Karingal

Last week we left it on the court inspired by what we’ve been taught. It was a test, we did our best, and win or loss it was hard fought.

Today we travel to Pearcedale & are hungry to win 5 from 5 after coming through with 3 wins out of 5 against Hastings last week. Well done to B, C & D squads who played some ripper netball and were rewarded with impressive wins. Unfortunately U17’s and A grade couldn’t get the wins to make it 5 from 5, but nonetheless gave it a red hot crack. With most of our A grade side out for the round, we had some B grade girls step up and boy, were they impressive! Huge thanks to the girls who stepped up and played what was a tough game against an impressive Hastings side. U17’s are improving every week, they are really starting to come together and work as a team. Onward and upwards from here girls, keep working hard! D grade’s defensive end was flawless, the mid court worked hard to get the ball through to the goalers who shot with great accuracy and won by a comfortable 54 goals. C grade was much the same, a strong defensive end and an equally as strong shooting saw some great netball & the score certainly reflected that with a 60 goal win. Couldn’t fault B grade’s performance with Tobi & Bec showing what a dynamic shooting duo they make, rarely missing a shot. A grade was a tough game and Hastings got away from us early in the 2nd quarter and from there it was turn over after turn over on both ends, with Hastings taking home the win. Good luck to all 5 teams today, lets get the job done! GO BULLETTES!!

Our 17s are standing tall, after 4 games no loss at all. This week again, in sun or rain, they’re looking hungry for that ball. Though injury clouds hang up above A, B, C, D are looking tough. They show true fight, but win not quite, they’re doing it for the game they love. This week we play for a different cause. This week we help fight mental wars We’re dressing in blue, and we need you to come help put teen suicide on pause. For those we’ve lost we dedicate today. For those we can help, for you we play. We’re here for support, on & off court, Please know- It’s okay not to be okay. <3 Pearcedale & Karingal have come together to proudly dedicate this week’s games to raising awareness for mental health and suicide. Please come down and help us support this great cause!

Red Hill

Our young local developing A Grade players this week were determined to prove to their coach that they are deserving members of this team, which they certainly proved on the court against Crib Point. With a strong start, great teamwork, effective goaling and pressure across the whole court they played strong consistent team netball for four quarters to really test Crib Point . A close game 37 to 40. Extremely strong and consistent game from B grade this week, fighting to keep the lead for the full 4 quarters! The determination in the girls was outstanding for such a young team, and it was a very well deserved win. Excited to watch this team reach their full potential across the rest of the season! C grade had a dissapointing 25 point loss against a very strong attacking and defending Crib Point! Asha Cook and U/17 Nyhah Waterfall performed well filling the GA position, while our defense team worked overtime in goals. The D grade girls had another great game, only going down by three goals. They are really coming together as a team and the improvement each week is rapid. We welcomed Ash this week adding some height to our goal ring!

Netball Notes Our U/17 team again proved how they are developing as an extremely competitive team . Player versatility makes position placement extremely difficult each quarter for the coach , as she determines the best combinations on the court each game . As the season progresses positions will consolidate & this team will fly. Awesome win 69 to 3.

Devon Meadows U17s

After a strong start from us in the first half, Langwarrin fought back to get ahead of the meadows girls in the 3rd quarter and unfortunately took out the win by 3 goals. Strong goaling from Georgia again, and a tough job for the defence to shut down a very tall shooter. Ebony managed to do what was asked of her and was BOC. Unfortunately we had some rushed passes and footwork that was our down fall. Lots to work on and plenty of talent and energy to work with this week going ahead! D Grade With a few injuries and new players coming through d grade this week we had a lot of position changes throughout the game. The girls came out firing, breaking Langwarrin’s centre on the first whistle. However, the third quarter let us down and they got a good lead. Boc went to Beth for her consistent defensive pressure. C Grade The C grade girls came out firing this week. It was a tight first quarter with girls heading into the break with a 2 goal lead. From there the girls took the teams game to the next level and really rewarding the defenders hard work with strong drives down the court and good movement in the goal ring to convert. The hard work the girls are putting in at training is really starting to pay off and the ball flow down the court improved this week. A special mention to Amy Hall who stepped up from D grade this week. BOC Brooke Murray for her movement in the goal ring, creating the angles. Let’s make it 2 on the trot next week girls. A Grade Building momentum from our last three games was important, focusing on composure out of defense we were able to move the ball freely out of down court. Langwarrin have become a strong team, thus showed as we were forced wide an unable to react. A change up in the second quarter we regained momentum to refocus on us. Our second quarter the best by far, showing what is achievable. Our training sessions are focused for our games we build weekly, learning to trust & believe that it will work. BOC Bry aka Tiny Today we welcome the girls from up at the Shearing Shed! This morning we also welcome all the special ladies in our lives as we hold our annual Mother’s Day Breaky!

Chelsea Last week our A Grade were well prepared for a tough game against a very strong Tyabb side. The team showed so much strength and a lot of positivity throughout the game. Rachel played incredibly well in defence matching up to a talented goal shooter, and Katja stepped up in the second quarter to take some important intercepts in the mid-court. It was the best the team has played all together this season. We had so many positives to take away from the game. B Grade also knew it was going to be tough with a few of our players out and injured. Tara’s defence was fantastic all game again! Her “hands over” created so much pressure on the Tyabb goalers. We also welcomed Liv, who was key through the mid-court. Adele stepped up for Bs and absolutely smashed it, earning her best on court. C grade played a hard physical game against Tyabb last week. We came out a little slow and found it hard to settle into the game. Then we picked up the pace in the second half and were able to score a few goals back to force a draw. Steph played really well in centre, whilst Casey earnt best on with a huge 4th quarter performance. Our D grade can report our third win for the season! After another slow start and being down by a point at quarter time the D grade girls fought back against Tyabb. It was tight throughout the whole match with the girls pulling away in the last quarter. A big welcome to Christina, who played her first game in D grade and absolutely smashed it!!

Netball Notes Tyabb Off we went to Chelsea to face the unknown seagull ladies in perfect weather. After 3 sensational matches D grade had their first shaky start. The girls found it challenging to find space against very tight opponents in the first half but were able to adjust their movements in the second half which allowed for much better ball movement. Best on went to Bella for her tremendous determination in attack & defence all game. The C graders came away with a draw after a hard fought contest against a strong team. Darcey showed her versatility moving from the centre court into the goal circle & provided the extra movement that was needed. Jayde created many turnovers to push our girls into attack & combined well with our circle defenders Chloe and Lace who worked hard all game to close down the opposition circle. B grade were able to capitalise on some magnificent defensive pressure from the entire team all day. We held cool heads at times but are still looking for a full 60min performance. Katja played an outstanding game in GK, turning the ball over & giving us plenty of opportunities to score. A grade saw the opportunity for some B grade players to step up and they most definitely did. A slow start to adjust to the different combinations but we were eventually able to settle & show some really strong passages. This week our undermanned squad takes on the might of Crib, let’s enjoy the day and see what we can do! #nipnip

Somerville Last week saw the Eagles take part in the postcode cup, and we were very happy to come away with another 4 from 4. D Grade - D Grade continued their winning form on Saturday with a 32-24 win against Pearcedale. This win sees them soar to the top of the ladder, and they are going to fight to keep it that way. C Grade - C grade has always had big battles with Pearcedale. Great communication and team work with loads of encouragement from the sideline helped the C girls to come away with the win. B Grade - It was a perfect day for netball as we took on Pearcedale at home. We finished the game strongly, defeating Pearcedale 78-16. It was a real team effort this week, with the girls adapting to position changes seamlessly each quarter. A Grade - Tough day at the office for the A Grade girls. It happens and were not going to dwell on it. We did come away with the win, although it may not have seemed like

it. Next week will see the A grade refreshed and ready to turn it on against Hastings. Today we take on Hastings away. We dont know what these sides looks like this year, but we are striving to keep our 4 from 4 winning streak going regardless. We have the strength, grit and teamwork, and this will carry through to the game today. Dont forget to get thrifting for our: THRIFT SHOP FUNCTION on MAY 5th @ 7pm. Also, Ladies Day tickets are available now for May 12th. Get ready for the cheese platter and to see the netballers in their finest form. #BRRK

Hastings

We thank Karingal for hosting us on Saturday. The under 17 girls came out solid from the first centre pass and cemented an early 20 goal lead in the first quarter. The game evened itself out, however we managed to continue scoring. With two great performances in goals from Molly Larkin and Kirra Struthers best on court goes equally to both. Well done to all the girls for a whole team effort! D grade unfortunately did not perform to their best and had a big loss. As a team they have a lot of room to improve and need to stick together and train hard to improve their results. Its been a tough start to the season for the C graders girls coming up against some well driled teams. Karingal played a fast, skilled game that we just couldn’t match. C grade award goes to Grace Ord who continues to improve and push herself. B grade didn’t come away with a win but learnt a lot out of the match. Karingal were a very experienced side with strong team structures that were hard to break. A solid all in team performance. Another great day out for our A grade against Karingal with a 67/42 result. The newly formed combination has continued to develop further from last weeks game. It was great to watch the Hosking twins’ athleticism and innate sense for each other on court. Goal circle feeding continued to be refine which is demonstrated in the score line, both Armani and Bubba dominated. Karingal were depleted of their usual VNL players and we will face a different line up next time we meet.

Rye Rye had last weekend off due to the Round 4 Clash played at the start of the season. The week before Rye made the trip to Crib Point! D Grade started the morning off strongly, with all girls trying very hard. Harriet played one off her best games so far this season, with Leah having a great game too. Barb, Kiarna, Flynn and Ebony were great defensively, applying some good pressure all game. Amber and Bec

Dromana

C Grade had a slow start against Crib Point. Shannon and Jodie tried everything they could in attack but Crib Point were all over it. Ellie, Jasmyn and Tuscani played well in mid-court, connecting and talking well. Sarah and Kristy were so strong in defence but Crib’s shooters didn’t miss. Coach Lucy came on into the game, giving the team more direction. The girls worked incredibly well together and should be very pleased with themselves.

The A Grade girls have had a terrific start to the season and sit in fourth place ahead of this week’s round of matches.

B Grade had an amazing start, applying some amazing pressure all the way down the court. It’s the silly errors that saw Crib creep out to a lead. However, Rye didn’t drop their heads. Sam, Katelyn, Rach and Lauren played some great Netball through the mid court, making some strong drives in attack. Ruby and Liv shoot beautifully all game, really finding their feet. Emma and Miranda were amazing in defence, really applying some heavy pressure. Great job everyone!

The girls enjoyed a day off last week due to playing our round-four game against Rye on Good Friday and will be fresh and raring to go against Chelsea.

In fact all grades have had really solid starts to the season which is a real credit to everyone involved at the netball club. C and D Grade have also won three matches and B Grade and 17 Unders are not far behind with two wins each for the season. Let’s hope everyone enjoys their time on the netball co this weekend.

Langwarrin

Good luck to the Footballers and Netballers this week against Langwarrin.

It was another big week for the club against Devon Meadows with four wins from five matches on our home courts at Lloyd Park.

Crib Point

The A Grade girls had a great start and were leading 11-3 after a high-quality first quarter.

Another pearler of a day for netball, we headed up the hill to take on RH in the woolsheds. U/17 had a rough start to their day hit with injuries and illness. The girls didn’t come away with the win but as always kept their heads up. BOC went to Hannah for her determination and effort! D Grade had another great game holding off a late surge from RH to win 30-27. BOC went to Jane for another outstanding 4 quarter performance. C Grade continued with another strong team performance. Their control in attack, defensive pressure and versatility as a team make them a solid unit. The girls sealed with a 53-27 victory. BOC went to Rob for her strong game in WA. B Grade certainly had their chances with some great patches of brilliance but followed with some patches of poorer play. Making for a disappointing game going down 28-36. The RH goalers were very accurate and made us pay for every turnover. BOC went to Kellie for her amazing performance in center court and first ever Crib Point game. A Grade were slow to fire, and at half time were down by 11. Fortunately, they pulled together in the second half making for an incredible come from behind win, clutching a 3 point victory 40-37. Defensive whole court pressure and hard work from our goalers chipped away at the difference. BOC went to Karly who was a game changer in attack. Today we travel to Tyabb for what will be some very tough competition. Let’s get it done today girls and secure 5 wins for the black and white!

Emily (Zeuschner) and Jayde (Aron) played well in defence, not allowing the Devon Meadows’ goalers any latitude, while our midcourt started the match in full flight. Devon Meadows showed great character to fight back in the second quarter but our girls took control of the contest after half time. The other Emily (Bennet) and Jayde (Travers) combination had good games in attack, while Amy, Sara and Sarah rounded out a really strong performance. A Grade is having a great season to date, remaining undefeated alongside Tyabb and crib point after four rounds. This week the A Grade girls have a bye while our other senior grades will travel down the highway to Rye. B Grade had a tough day against Devon Meadows before winning 48-35, with the win seeing the girls in third position, while C Grade fought the game out well against the Panthers. D Grade had a strong win and sit in second place on the ladder. The 17-under team had the closest finish of the day, showing great character to hold off Devon Meadows by three goals at the final whistle. Good luck to all of our players today!

The Dandenong Southern Stingrays’ winning start to the season ended abruptly as the Oakleigh Chargers stormed home in the dying minutes at Warrawee Park on Saturday winning 11.6 (72) to 9.12 (66). Oakleigh came into the game as slight underdogs, but with a couple of handy inclusions and a 3-1 record so far it was always set as the game of the round. Both sides had their share of possession with a massive armwrestle ensuing for most of the day. The Stingrays had a hot patch for 15 minutes in the first quarter, but the Chargers were able to peg back the margin over the next two quarters to take advantage of the Stingrays poor kicking at goal. The Stingray defence did perform admirably, with Lachlan Young having his best game this year and Matthew Gahan once again a stand-out. Excitement-machine Zac Foot also put in another solid performance, amassing plenty of contested and uncontested possessions, breaking the lines numerous times and kicking a couple of nice goals along the way. Corey Ellison put up his hand as one of the best contested forwards in the TAC this year, kicking two goals and taking a few big grabs in the process. Stingrays Talent Manager Mark Wheeler said the Chargers just did the little things better. “The Chargers definitely had more intent around the footy, adjusting to the tempo of the game, trying to get the players

to work a bit harder around the contests and ending up better on the clearances,” Wheeler said. “It’s a tough competition. We just need to make sure the players we bring in each week adjust to the level, as well as educating them on the importance of kicking goals or at least defending it on the way out - instead of dropping our heads. “We had a purple patch in the middle of the game, but they were definitely better than us in the final quarter but, at the end of the day, we lost the game due to poor conversion inside 50. “We couldn’t maintain the scoreboard pressure like previous weeks, to have significantly more inside 50’s, and shots on goal, and to not even register a score is deflating.” It will be a day the Stingrays players and staff will most likely highlight in the review on Tuesday as the one that got away. The Stingrays didn’t take their chances and relied on individual performances instead of the team play on display in the first four rounds. Dandenong will have a lot of work to do this week as they prepare to take on the Eastern Rangers at Shepley Oval in two weeks’ time. The game will be played on Saturday 12th May starting at 2.00pm. This week the TAC Cup has a bye.
