Division 1 - Round 10 Saturday 16th June 2018

Edi-Asp v Bonbeach Seaford v Pines Mornington v Rosebud

AFL South East In my memory I do not recall experiencing a better week’s Community Football than what I personally witnessed over the long weekend.

by the Sorrento Club and was severely impacting the club’s attendances, and ability to attract Under 19 players due to travel.

It started with attending the AFL South East Regional Junior Championships. It is a tribute to the organisers, coaches, parents, officials how important this tournament has become. It was great to see that each of the leagues participating (FDJFL, SEJ, MPJFL and Yarra Ranges) all won at least one age division title. Which only goes to show how evenly the talent is spread across our region.

I am happy to hear the club’s arguments, but with respect to the Under 19’s I did make the observation that the club does not have under 17’s either, which is a local competition where travel is not an issue.

Based on what I witnessed, if I was asked to pick the most impressive squad, I would nominate the FDJFL Under 15 boys. They were well coached, well drilled, moved the ball impressively and remained undefeated. My next port of call was Sorrento on Saturday, who were looking to overturn the round 1 result against fellow reigning premier Frankston YCW. What a day this turned out to be. A big crowd, the size I’d not seen before at a local football match, and a super game of football. Tough and uncompromising, but fair. It was an excellent advertisement for the MPNFL as a quality competition. Despite all that, I still managed to get into an animated discussion with the Sorrento President who continues to argue that the new divisional structure is not supported

The Club’s view, expressed by the President, was also at odds with an interview during the week with the Club’s coach who was quite enthusiastic about divisional football. I have to say that Saturday at Sorrento was the first time the new structure was disputed. That is not to say there are others with a similar view to Sorrento. Having left Sorrento confused that anyone would not have seen Saturday’s contest as anything but in the best interests of football generally, I then travelled to Red Hill on Sunday to speak at their impressive “Captain’s Club” luncheon. Red Hill is obviously a very well-run Club. The support they receive from local sponsors and residents is obvious. They have a full quota of Seniors and Under 19’s (who top the table) and they have a healthy relationship with the junior club which spans across all age groups. Their netball numbers are also healthy. As was the case at Sorrento a large crowd assembled at Red Hill on a sunny day to see the locals take on rival, and previously undefeated, Dromana. Dromana called the shots early and seemingly were headed for victory before Red Hill stemmed the flow and in a big last quarter overtook Dromana to win by six points. My firsthand experiences over the weekend suggested the competition is in good shape. Added to that I noted that Mt Eliza toppled Frankston Bombers by three points and Tyabb won their second game this season, having only won two in the previous four years.

These results enhance my view that a divisional model is the right way to go for the long-term sustainability of the competition. However, I also have the view we need to go further and, based on several discussions over the weekend I know most clubs agree, that a third division is required to generate some new clubs into our league as well as a few existing clubs needing to rebuild from that level. From a club sustainability viewpoint, if we were to have three divisions and say 28 clubs, the administrative costs would not increase, however revenue would increase as a result of the extra clubs and more finals. That would allow for reduced costs to clubs overall. John Anderson Region General Manager AFL South East

AFL Vic Country AFL Victoria launches state-wide FightMND Round AFL Victoria is proud to partner with FightMND to launch the inaugural state-wide Sockit2MND Round from June 16-17. As part of AFL Victoria’s commitment to social responsibility, the new dedicated round will raise awareness for motor neurone disease which affects thousands of Victorians each year, with at least two Australians diagnosed with MND each day. Players from participating leagues and clubs across all levels of football– from grassroot leagues to Victoria’s state competitions - can wear blue and white socks during the Fight MND Round to raise awareness of the disease. The AFL Victoria Sockit2MND Round follows the annual ‘Big Freeze at the G’ event which saw all 18 AFL coaches plunge into a pool of ice as part of the Round 12 AFL match between Collingwood and Melbourne at the MCG. With the Big Freeze now synonymous with the Queen’s Birthday Monday AFL clash, Victorians are encouraged to support the community FightMND Round by taking part in the online social media campaign ‘Sockit from the Pocket’, which challenges participants to post their attempt at kicking a goal from the football pocket to help raise awareness about MND. Channel 7’s Peter Jackson VFL coverage this weekend on Saturday and Sunday will highlight the Sockit2MND Round, with players from all clubs wearing the MND socks. Since launching in 2014, FightMND has committed more than $23 million into research designed to ultimately find a cure for MND, while a further $2.5 million has been invested to purchase vital equipment to assist with the care of MND patients across Australia. The dedicated FightMND Round is the second of four state-wide rounds to be conducted this year, with the Love the Game Round (July 21-22) and White Ribbon Round (August 4-5) to be held later in the season.

SEDA 2018 AFLSE Regional Junior Championships AFL South East dripping with junior talent Brilliant weather and even better football from the future stars of the game were just two of highlights of a thrilling conclusion to the SEDA 2018 AFL South East Regional Junior Championships on the weekend. Boys and girls from the Frankston Districts, Mornington Peninsula, South East and Yarra Ranges Junior Football Leagues took part in the three-day carnival, which began at Beaconsfield’s Holm Park Reserve on Wednesday before switching to Frankston Park and Shepley Oval for Saturday and Monday fixtures across the Queen’s Birthday weekend. Competition was fair but fierce, with all four leagues walking away with at least one win over the carnival. The FDJFL led the way with three wins, including a dominant performance in the Under-15 Boys, with the MPJFL claiming two winning shields and the SEJ and AFL Yarra Ranges taking the spoils in the Under-13s and Under16s respectively. The Queen’s Birthday carnival, an important stepping stone in the Dandenong Stingrays Pathway, has grown in significance over the years and is now aligned with both the Melbourne and St Kilda Football Club’s Next Generation Academies (NGA). AFLSE RGM John Anderson said the carnival had quickly developed a strong reputation for identifying the next wave of talent emerging through the junior system. “The Regional Junior Championships have become a very important stepping stone in the pathway to higher honours, such as selection on AFL and AFLW lists, “ Anderson said. “It was fantastic to see so many up-and-coming young footballers putting themselves to the test against the best players from other leagues. “Congratulations to all the leagues, their coaches, support staff, parents and players for their commitment to what was a fantastic carnival played in great conditions at three of the best venues in the region. “I would like to wish all the players the best of luck as they look towards higher honours in their football journey.” This year’s carnival was proudly supported by SEDA College, where Year 11 and 12 students complete their senior secondary education immersed in the sport industry. Footy Preview - Division 1 It’s time to take a deep breath By David Nagel Sometimes it’s important to just sit back and just take a deep breath……and reflect a little on what has been an amazing first half of the MPNFL Division One season. We all knew the inclusion of Frankston, Rosebud and Sorrento would add significant spice to the competition, but to have all three teams involved in the three elements that make divisional footy so great – premierships, finals and relegation – well that has added a special ingredient to what was already a very tasty proposition indeed. Rosebud’s fight for survival gets serious today when it hits the highway for a trip to Mornington, the Bombers rest up in sixth-place after a gut-wrenching three-point loss to Mt Eliza last week, while Sorrento is right in the mix for its sixth premiership in 10 years after a magnificent win over Frankston YCW at Sorrento. The game lived up to its billing, with a massive crowd converging on David McFarlane Reserve to see the perennial-powerhouses lock horns in one of the great spectacles in MPNFL history. It warmed the cockles of the heart to see such a huge crowd engrossed in country football – the Sharks prevailing by 14 points to remain a game clear at the top of the ladder. The fine line between pleasure and pain has never been more evident, with the three-point gap between Mt Eliza and the Bombers last week changing the fortunes of both clubs significantly. A Bombers win would have seen both teams on six wins for the season, but the Redlegs triumph now has them two games clear of Frankston as we enter the serious end of the business. So to today’s games, and three contests that are all very intriguing in their own right. There will no special feeling of love for Bonbeach when it walks into the visitors’ rooms today at Regents Park to take on Edithvale-Aspendale. These two were embroiled in an early-season controversy in round one after the Eagles walked away with a 33-point victory over the Sharks at Bonbeach. A player-points issue was highlighted and the Eagles were stripped of their premiership points, and their game-score was eliminated, handing the Sharks a handy four points and a nice little gift to begin their season. But both teams have headed in different directions since then. The Eagles have proven themselves to be a genuine contender, winning six of their next eight games – with a 12-point loss to Frankston YCW and a two-point defeat at the hands of Sorrento their only stumbles since round one. Brett O’Hanlon has been in sensational form for the Eagles, while Sam Monaghan, Steve Mannix, Michael Bussey and Matt Clark have all been in super-touch of late.

8

They’re in season 2018 right up to their ears the Eagles – much like Bonbeach was in 2017! But the defeated grand finalists have dropped off this year, with injuries to key players taking a toll. The Sharks were embarrassed on their own deck by Pines last start, conceding nine goals in the last quarter on their way to a 103-point defeat. Sheldon Price, Ben Hogan, Jason Gumbleton and Mitch Gent were the best of a bad lot that day and will look to lead the way again. But the Eagles will be ruthless, they have the motivation and desire to win this one by seven-to-eight goals plus. Pines will look to continue its fine run of recent form when the Pythons make their shortest away trip of the season to take on Seaford at Belvedere Reserve. The Pythons have been red-hot of late, adding Frankston YCW, Mornington and Bonbeach to their list of victims and doing so in very-impressive fashion. The Pythons lifted their percentage from 110 to 125 against Bonbeach last start and currently have the highest percentage of any team in the competition. Star forward Aaron Edwards is back in full flight, overcoming his injury woes of the last 12 months to kick 19 goals in his most previous fortnight of footy. Edwards received some silver-service last start, with players like Lachy Marshall, Nick Boswell, Tim Bongetti and Damian Plane enjoying a drop in intensity by the opposition as the day unfolded. The Tigers missed a golden opportunity against Mornington in round nine, losing by four points in a game that would have seen them jump six points ahead of the Bulldogs on the ladder. That would have given them some breathing space, but they now find themselves searching long and hard for a victory that will extricate them from bottom place on the table.

Edi-Asp and Bonbeach will reunite for the first time since their controversial round one clash.

www.aflsoutheast.com.au

Footy Preview - Division 1 Dylan Howlett and Cameron Newbold were terrific for the Tiges against the Bulldogs, while the creative Curtis Barker gave his former-Cranbourne coach Simon Goosey some serious headaches across the course of the afternoon. Seaford will be up for this one, but Pines has the form and the class to win by 23 points in the end. Mornington’s luck has fluctuated wildly this season and the Bulldogs will be hoping for some good luck to go its way when it hosts Rosebud at Alexandra Park. Bad luck has come in the form of injuries, with coach Goosey only now starting to see the return of some of his star talent. But good luck has also gone the Doggies way, with both of their victories coming by single digits against Bonbeach (1 point) in round seven and Seaford (4 points) in round nine. Take those away and the Dogs would be in all sorts of trouble right now! Jackson Calder, Joel Miller, Jai Haddock and Kalen Bird were instrumental figures in that four-point victory over the Tigers last start, and they’ll be keen to pay the Buds back for a 10-point defeat in round one. Rosebud has really held its own this year but face a tough second half of the season, with many games on the road. The Buds are capable of matching it with any opposition on their day and have really pushed some of the better teams going around. Greg Bentley has been absolutely superb, leading from the front, while Fletcher Hustwaite, Josh Harris and Sean Downie are emerging as the leaders of the future. The Buds can basically book their place in division one next year with victory, but the Doggies will jump to eighth place on the ladder – leapfrogging the Buds with another single-digit nine-point victory.

Footy Notes Rosebud Make sure everyone gets back to Jetty Road Brewery at 7pm tonight for our Mid Season Masquerade Ball and don’t forget your mask! Our previous game against the bombers was a disappointing result for the seniors as we failed to back up from our win over YCW. We got off to a good start dominating possession and inside 50’s but failed to convert and apply scoreboard pressure missing easy opportunities. As the game went on Frankston capitalised on our skill errors resulting in turnover goals. We have plenty to work on that starts today. In what was a big game for development team to keep in touch with the five the boys were keen to get off to a good start and that is exactly what they did and to their credit they were relentless all day running out 7 goal winners. Ed Ellis, Bronsin Corrin and David Cohn were best afield. With continued low numbers the Under 19s battled hard and with really smart patches of play we were able to hold off Frankston’s run for three quarters. Unfortunately the boys couldn’t sustain it in the last quarter with Frankston clearly with fresher legs being able to get off the chain. Our goals came from really classy skilful passages of play which is a step in the right direction. With more numbers and continuing to work on our skill and fitness we will continue to improve as the season goes on. Nick Sakalis, Kieran Hanley and Brayden Glaum were best on. Good luck to all teams today as we take on the bulldogs on their home turf. Go Buds!

Our netballers scored 4 good wins against strong opposition and all teams are well placed for the second half of the season. The senior women’s team played over the bye and are very close to a win. Nathan Heath (Mornington U17’s) and Angus Rowler (Sth Mornington U17’s) who helped us out, all 3 players were fantastic. In the Ressies Seaford proved to be too organised in a game that was well within our grasp at times. We let them have a couple of short periods where the scored miles too easily. We need to make sure that when a side gets a run on us that we wrestle harder to get it back on our terms. Great to see Quinn continue to improve and also to see Jack Kerr & Joel O’s debut for the Bulldogs. Thanks to Jack Crawf, Whiz and Will H for putting your hands up to play. Seniors we saw another close game against Seaford which saw us win by 4 points. It’ll go a long way to building confidence in the group with a lot that we did well and some we can learn from. The pleasing thing has been our ability to pressure the opposition team defense which we are working on all the time. Our finishing skills are getting better with the last quarter kicking 3 straight to the opposition 1 .5. We start to get players back from injury so let’s look forward to better performance against Rosebud today. Go Doggies!!

Bonbeach

Mornington Before we celebrated the Queen’s Birthday we ventured to Seaford to take on the mighty Tigers. Unders started the day with a win. Our boys responded from the loss the week before, defensive pressure was at a high standard and the boys turned up ready to play. It’s hard to point out some best players because the whole team played their role. Thanks also to Conor Jacoby,

Looking forward to a great performance from all 3 footy sides this week against our local rivals Edi Asp! It looms to be a season defining clash for our 1s and 19s groups against some quality opposition! A huge happy 40th Birthday to our club President Matt Lowe! We thank you immensely for your hard work and dedication and being driven to be different for the betterment of our club. Your selfless attitude is much appreciated and benefits our brand. Footy Notes Pines Today is MND round. An insidious disease which is affecting one of our own, Stephen ‘Cowboy’ Nichols. Cowboy is a legend of our local football, having won multiple reserves goal kicking awards, played in many premierships, been a president of both the junior and senior clubs and together with his family, and broader family connections represents what is great about our local football. To Jodie, Zoe, Joel and Stephen know that the club and the sporting community is here to support you in this battle in any way we can, although we note that in spite of the battle, Cowboy hardly misses a game, especially the under 19s where captain and son, Joel is doing a great job. Today marks the halfway point and to the committee and volunteers that have helped and assist every week, the club thanks you. Tonight we will celebrate our work with the annual black tie ball at the Mornington racing club. This will be another marker in the progress of the club as we grow and continue to improve on providing our community of elite sport. With plenty of good news now and on the horizon the second half of the season looks exciting.

Just a reminder to all that our hosts today are displaced from their usual home venue, something which our own club experienced not so long ago. So let’s barrack hard, passionately and ensure we buy our food and drinks from the host club. Enjoy the game.

“Good luck to all teams for the 2018 season from Totally Workwear Knoxxeld and Berwick.”

A Slice of MPNFL History True bragging rights on the line By Doug Dyall When the two Peninsula leagues, the MPFL and NFL, amalgamated at the beginning of 1987 a popular wellsupported tradition came to an end with the end of interleague matches between the two competitions. Typically, the Queen’s Birthday weekend was one that had great expectations with matches played between these two leagues trying to have bragging rights over each other. Interleague had been part of the landscape for over a decade when the last traditional long-weekend match took place on Sunday June 8, 1986 at Frankston Oval. Coming into this last encounter the Nepean league was leading five wins to the Peninsula league three. In the early days the MPFL seemed to not take these games seriously and it took a couple of losses for them to see the value of the contest. The NFL clubs embraced the idea as it was a way of showing that their league was on equal footing and should be respected. Going into the last of these rivalry games both leagues were very keen to finish off as top dog and interest amongst the football community was as high as it had ever been. A record crowd attended and they were treated to a fitting finale as described by Bruce Stewart. It was a game of contrast with the MPFL looking brilliant in the first half and the NFL dogged and determined after half time. Inspired by Steve Newman in the ruck, and with Greg Way, Billy Clayton and Craig Neal busy, the MPFL whipped out to a handy lead. For Nepean, Lyndon Oats, Greg Coyne, Brett Wright and Steve Fanning started well but the MPFL led 7.2 to 2.3 at quarter time, and maintained its 29-point advantage at the main break, 12.5 to 7.6. The NFL had a terrific third term, cutting the margin back to eight points at three-quarter time, 13.5 to 11.6.

The last quarter began with the MPFL goaling early but the NFL responded and slammed on two and the difference was just two points. A free to Andrew Callaghan resulted in a goal and the NFL had taken the lead for the first time. At the 13-minute mark Michael Ritchie responded with a major, but that was replied by Callaghan before Tony Norman banged another one through from the halfforward line and the NFL had a 10-point lead. Terry O’Brien answered for MPFL, but when Chris Moulton replied for Nepean the game looked over. Neal then responded for the MPFL, with players from both sides hurling themselves at the ball in absolute determination. The siren sounded at the 29-minute mark with Nepean four points in front. Nepean FL 2.3 7.6 11.6 17.10.112 Mornington Peninsula FL 7.2 12.5 13.5 17.6.108 NFL Goals: Andrew Callaghan 5, Chris Moulton 4, Tony Norman 4, Brett Wright, Peter Vance, Steve Trott, Peter Bolam. Best: Steve Fanning, Ken Peterson, Peter Vance, Lyndon Oats, Brett Wright, Craig Dale, Greg Coyne. MPFL Best: Greg Savage, Terry O’Brien, Steve Newman, William Clayton, Frank Tobin. Netball Preview - Division 1 A crunch game for Mornington and Rosebud By David Nagel The finals hopes of both Mornington and Rosebud could very-well hinge on the result of today’s huge clash between the clubs at Mornington. The home side sits in fourth place, one spot above the Buds who will desperate to draw level with the Bulldogs on six wins for the season. These are two of the in-form teams in the competition at the moment with Mornington winning four of its last five games – it’s only hiccup coming against runaway competition leader Seaford. The Buds have also been in impressive form of late, winning 57-41 against Frankston a fortnight back to make it three wins on the trot. The Buds played some fantastic netball, scoring 21 goals in the second quarter and 16 in the last after conceding a lead at the first change. Bethany Leach (C), Millie McDermott (WA) and Courtney McLennan (WD) transitioned the ball brilliantly from defence into attack, while Nicole Hadgkiss (GK) and Nicole Chianta (GD) had the Frankston goalers under pressure. And Lauren Robinson (GS) and Emma White (GA) worked brilliantly as a partnership with Robinson scoring 33 and White 24 of their match-winning total. The Bud are starting to look good, but need to win this one to stay in finals calculations. Mornington played a great first half against Seaford last start, taking a two-goal lead to half time before the overwhelming flag favourites put the foot down with an 18-6 third term. Players like Candace Page (GD) and Alex Newton (GK) tried their best for the Bulldogs, but the steady stream of supply proved too hot to handle in the end. The Bulldogs midcourt of Georgia Hunter, Tess Haddock and Sarah Nash would have learnt the hard way that the slightest drop in pressure will be treated harshly by the better teams in the competition. There’s a lot at stake here – a two-game gap for Mornington or a real chance of playing finals for the Buds – but it’s Mornington to win by six goals. Ladder positions would suggest that the remaining two games will be a little lopsided with Seaford hosting Pines and Edi-Asp welcoming Bonbeach to its home court. Seaford remains unbeaten, but did receive a scare against Mornington last time out. The Tigers needed a lift at half-time – and got it with every single player lifting their intensity across the court. It started with Tracey Dell and Kara Hargrave in defence, worked its way through the midcourt with Rachel Cosans, Tayla Robertson and Siobhan Inglis, and ended with Nichelle Liepa and Alesina Toleafoa who were deadly accurate under the ring.

26

It was an impressive turnaround from the Tigers who are not used to being behind too often this season. Pines had their chances against Bonbeach but were outscored 19 to 15 after half time to reverse a two-goal margin they held at the major interval. Maddi Blackburn (C) never stopped trying all day while Merinda Hale (WD) and Regina Tiaiti (GD) combined well at the defensive end of the court. And they’ll be the need for some great defending today, with a strong and powerful Seaford set to win comfortably. And Edi-Asp is flying at the moment and should have no problems in accounting for Bonbeach. The Eagles are hot-to-trot after a last-start win over Sorrento where scores were level at half time before the Eagles put the foot down in the second half. The ammunition really started to fire with Caris McInnes having an instant impact in wing defence and Michelle Sanders and Nicole Taylor giving the Sorrento goalers no easy shots to look at. It was one of the most impressive halves of netball for the season and showed the Eagle are on track for a fifthconsecutive premiership. Bonbeach will be keen to make this one competitive, but even the efforts of Remi Hynes, Zoe Summers, Louise Manders and Steph Coy will be enough to stop the Eagles from a steady victory. Frankston, YCW, Mt Eliza and Sorrento will rest some aching legs after a big day of action on Saturday. Sorrento won 43-28 against YCW, while Frankston scored its second win of the season in convincing fashion – 49-33 – against the Mounties. Today’s game bring a conclusion to a split-round 10 of netball.

Emma White has formed a strong partnership with Lauren Robinson for Rosebud and they will look to fire again against Mornington this afternoon.

Netball Notes Division 1 Rosebud D grade - What a pleasure to watch a team play together and put in 100% effort. I was proud of everyone today. We put into practice the things we worked on at training and a coach can’t ask for more than that. Looking forward to next game. Well done Abbey Hepner and Gracie Viojo for best on. C grade - Coming up against YCW we knew that it had to be a win. As a team we went on court and played for each other, when we do this we are a great team. We can win any game we put our mind to. Well done girls, best on Lauren Harvey and Tayla Prentice

“Anytime Fitness Mornington” A Grade again had another huge game with top of the ladder Seaford. It was goal for goal until we lost a little composure and got behind by 10 goals with a few silly mistakes in the 3rd quarter. Although we came back in the last and again matched them, we couldn’t get back the 10 we had already lost. Player of the match goes to Georgia for a strong game in centre then finishing back in defence. Back to start against Rosebud today and good luck to all teams. Go Doggies

B grade - One of our strongest games to date. Unfortunately went down to the wire and ended in a draw. A great team effort with fierce attacking play and unrelenting defensive work. Let’s take this effort into the second half of the season. Best on India White and Ashlee Farrelly A grade - Awesome work by the girls to seal another important win. With a very average opening quarter we needed to step up our game and that we did. They came hard at us physically for the remaining quarters but we were able to keep our heads and work through our game plan to win by a 16 goal margin. Awesome effort girls to come away with a great win. Well done Emma White and Nicole Chianta for best on court. Go Buds!

*to be read to the tune of It’s Raining Men by the Weathergirls*

Mornington Against Seaford “Hairhouse Warehouse” D grade began the day with a comfortable win. The D team played their game all match and continue to improve every round. We welcome Georgie Dixon to the team as a replacement for Janelle and can not wait to get the rest of the injured back on court. “Typepower Mornington” C Grade kept the theme going with another win by a smaller margin. It was equal for 3 quarters and our girls sneak away in the last to take the win. Our defensive pressure was outstanding and our goalers continue to make the goals. An all round team effort. “Mach 1 Panel & Paint” B grade had one of the best games they have played all season,we only lost by 4 goals against second on the ladder. The score in this case definitely did not depict how the game was played. This team is getting tougher and smarter and finding what it is to push yourself harder than your opponent, and they will be rewarded with a few more wins very soon. BOC was Charli.

Coaching female footballers high on the agenda St Kilda legend Nathan Burke will be the keynote speaker at the AFL South East Female Coaching Seminar to be held at Casey Fields on Monday 25 June. The 323-game superstar, who began his career with Pines, will base his talk around the differences associated with coaching female and male footballers. Two sessions will run concurrently on the evening. In room one – new female coaches will be introduced to football, with particular emphasis on the coaching of female footballers. In room two – existing male and female coaches will be given some great tips on the running of skill sessions for female footballers, and also the key elements in preventing injuries to the players. Women’s football is one of the fastest growing and exciting new areas of the game but, from a coaching perspective, it does throw up its own unique set of challenges. This free session is an absolute must for coaches of female footballers in the region and will not only benefit the coaches but continue the wonderful development of female footballers in the region. Footy Preview - Division 2 Gulls and the Bulls back on the big stage By David Nagel Chelsea and Karingal will meet in match-of-the-day status for the first time in seven years when the Gulls and Bulls go head to head at Beardsworth Avenue this afternoon. We have to go all the way back to the qualifying final of 2011, where the Bulls prevailed by 31 points over the Gulls on their way to a grand final appearance against Frankston YCW, to find the last time that these two proud clubs held centre stage. Chelsea slipped out of finals contention in 2012, and has not returned since, while the Bulls had one more crack at glory that season – going down to YCW again in the preliminary final. But it’s been a long road to hoe for both teams since then. Who would have thought that the 2012 Karingal side, that had Chris Hay (96 goals), David Hirst (33), Michael Burke (29), Daniel Noble (26) and Dale Alanis (24) contribute a staggering 208 goals between them for the season, would be destined for a sustained period of mediocrity. The Bulls finished with a 9-9 record in 2013 but then won just eight matches in four seasons of footy. It’s a tally that has already been matched this season under the tutelage of Brett Dunne – the Chelsea coach of the last two years. These two clubs have been the main beneficiaries of the implementation of divisional footy this year. The Bulls have overcome a lengthy injury list to sit second on the ladder, with a 28-point round-three loss to Dromana the only blip on the radar. Unlike that 2012 version, the Bulls are not relying on a key target to kick match-winning scores - more a complete effort from a solid army of soldiers. Burke and Hirst are trying to lift the Bulls back to those once lofty heights, while Andy McInnes, Blake Simpson

and Ryan McNamara have all chipped in with important goals at the precisely the right moments. The Bulls were seriously challenged by Somerville last week, leading by just five points at three-quarter time, but kicked four goals to one in the final term to score an impressive 27-point victory. Dunne rates the Eagles highly and will be very happy to emerge victorious after a tough battle. Andy Mathers, Mason Russell and Jordy Jones were all at the top of their games on Sunday and will be keen to reproduce that form off a six-day break. Chelsea hasn’t put too much of a foot wrong either, losing to Dromana in round five and then on the wrong side of a thriller against Langwarrin in round seven. Last week’s win over Rye was a real confidence booster. The Gulls made the trip down the highway and were being challenged at half time before kicking 6.4 to 2.3 in the third quarter to put the issue beyond doubt.

Cal Dixon has had quite an impact for Karingal in recent weeks.

Footy Preview - Division 2 Todd Gardiner is one of the premium midfielders in the competition while coach James Brain, Jack Francis and Jason Clark found a way through the big sticks at important times. Ben Holman has been resolute in his role in the ruck while Zane Carter and Josh Tripcony were terrific against the Demons last week. Brain would have been thrilled with the victory, considering his number-one goalkicker Curtis Bywater contributed just one goal for the match. This one should be a beauty, with the Gulls and Bulls set to thoroughly enjoy the bright lights of a deep-September precursor. Expect Dunne’s intimate knowledge of his former club to help the Bulls through to an epic fourpoint victory. Red Hill – the talk of the town after last week’s win over Dromana – will look to consolidate its biggest win of the season against Somerville at the Somerville Rec Reserve today. Defeating the Tigers this year is like breaking serve in tennis, you have a clear advantage - but it’s not really consolidated until you hold serve yourself. Today is the Hillmen’s chance to drive home that advantage gained against the Tigers last week. Their last quarter surge, where they kicked 7.2 to 3.1 to turn around a 19-point deficit at three-quarter time, was brilliant in its execution, and brave in its resilience. Sean Marchetti and Marcus Dal Lago narrowed the margin inside two minutes before Tom McEncroe

brought scores level at the 12-minute mark of the term. The Tigers steadied through Matt Price and Beau Cosson, appearing to snuff out the Hillmen’s challenge – but the home side wasn’t done with yet. Ben Hughes cut the margin back to a straight kick before Jono Ross produced a long bomb at the 20-minute mark to bring scores back to an even keel. Ross then set up Marchetti, who was lucky not to give away a free kick, before Marchetti returned the favour at the 25-minute mark, setting Ross up for an open goal that pushed the home side two goals ahead. Ben Holmes then cut the margin back to a kick at the 27-minute mark to set up a thrilling finale. The Tigers pushed, but a great smother by Dan McNamara and a steadying mark from Jake Mold saw the Hillmen hang on in one of the great games of the season. Harry Wynn-Pope was influential in the ruck, while Mold and Marchetti were joined by Noah Turner as consistent four-quarter performers. They will need to be active again, because the Eagles will be no pushover. They trailed Karingal by five points at three-quarter time last week before running out of legs in the final term. Ben Sedgwick produced another fine game in the ruck and his battle with Wynn-Pope will be a ripper this afternoon. Justin Allsopp and Tim McGenniss continued their fine recent run of form and will be key dangers that the Hillmen will need to wary of.

41

Footy Preview - Division 2 This should be a great contest, with both teams capable of fast ball movement that can really unsettle any opponent. Expect the Eagles to start fast, but the Hillman to rally and win by 13 points in a great game of footy. The season of Devon Meadows is quickly going from bad to worse and the Panthers need to turn things around when they host Rye at Glover Reserve today. The Panthers looked a great chance of breaking their five-game losing streak against Tyabb last week, but conceded seven goals in the last quarter to lose by 32 points. It was the second time in three weeks the Panthers had lost to a bottom-two side – and that probably best sums up where they’re at right now. Michael Theodoridis has been a shining light for the Panthers up forward while the likes of Pat Harmes, Troy Aust and Mat Fletcher continue to bust a gut on a weekly basis. The Panthers just need more consistency across the board. Rye has given its supporters great value for money this year with 28 points its biggest loss of the season. The Demons will miss the bulk of the in-form Tom Baker, who went down with a knee against Chelsea last week, but have had many solid contributors this season and should be able to cover his loss. Matt McIndoe stood tall last week and will be the number-one contender to fill Baker’s boots this time around.

42

With an ounce of luck the Demons could have been sitting top three, and players like Adam Kirkwood, Tyrren Head, Harry Whitty and Nick Rowson will make sure their finals’ dream is still a reality with a 38-point win. Dromana will be in no mood for favours when the topof-the-table Tigers welcome bottom-placed Crib Point to Beach Street today. The trip to Dromana was already going to be a tough one for the Magpies, but now on the rebound the Tigers will have extra incentive to really drive home their advantage over this week’s opponent. Any team would have been in trouble – but the Magpies are in the firing line at the worst possible time. Veteran Ben Holmes was outstanding for the Tigers last week, booting six goals in a virtuoso performance up forward. His partner in crime Ethan Johnstone was well held by Red Hill last week and will be keen to bounce back in style. The Tigers had complete control of the contest, but had a Sunday-snooze after half time – conceding nine goals to three – and paid the price in a big way. But what a great lesson learnt for the remainder of the season. The Magpies were disappointing on their home deck against Pearcedale last week in a game they would have expected to be more competitive in. Harrison and Zak Dekleuver tried their best for the Maggies – but even their best efforts won’t be enough to stop a significant onslaught from the Tigers this afternoon. Expect the margin to nudge three figures.

www.aflsoutheast.com.au

Footy Preview - Division 2 In other games, Pearcedale host Hastings in a bit of a danger game for the Blues, while Langwarrin and Tyabb will square off in an intriguing clash at Lloyd Park. The Dales played their best footy of the season against Crib Point last week, with Laughlin Cowell and Ben Mitchell booting five goals each in a 51-point victory that included a seven-goal second term. The Panthers will be keen to avenge their last effort on their home deck, a 105-point defeat at the hands of a vastly-improving Red Hill. Hastings will need to be on its best behaviour here, the Dales can be dangerous when they decide to be so, but the class of Luke Hewitt, Paul Rogasch, Col McVeigh and Steve Robb will ensure the Blues take the win and remain in top-three contention. And Langwarrin simply needs to bank the four points against the Yabbies to keep its finals hopes alive. The Yabbies are certainly a club on the improve, and will take great confidence from winning all three games of footy last week for the first time in seven years. Jake Anderson kicked seven last week and has the potential to do it again, while Ethan Rahilly and Matt Dimkos are two stalwarts who will be thrilled with the competitiveness of their club this year. But the Kangaroos, who need to make a statement ahead of crunch games against Somerville, Karingal, Red Hill, Dromana and Hastings and should have too much polish. Expect the Kangas to run away late to a 29-point victory.

Footy Notes Tyabb It’s a Record!! WHAT A WEEKEND FOR THE YAB FAMILY! 7.5/8 possible wins over the weekend from our netball, womens footy and senior mens footy. AND the first time in 7 years we have had all 3 teams in the mens win on the same day! Lucky for us, Devon supporters dont travel- meaning we had plenty of car parks for the Tyabb family on Saturday arvo. Our u/19’s boys got thee day off to a great start and sang the song for the first time. Our 2nd quarter set it up when we played our best footy for the year kicking 8 goals. A fantastic team effort. A fantastic result for our twos with them beating Devon in a tight tussle Down to only one fit player on the bench, the boys dug deep to hit the front in the last two minutes. Best:Elliott, Jarvis, Robinson & Altenkirch. With two wins on the board plenty of supporters hung around to see the seniors storm home in the last quarter and win 17.17- 13.9 Some exceptional efforts from our Captain (SKIP) and Vice captain(ANDO- 7 sossies) who were relentless all day. HARBO was brilliant playing on the opposition bear in the square, DIGS Underwood played a vital role for the team and MITTA and HANDSOME were inspirational digging in time and time again. Was a brilliant atmosphere which started after our u19s had their first win of the season and set themselves up to support the development and senior sides for the rest of the day. Now we turn our focus to this week in what could be seen as our toughest assignment yet. LANGY

Rye It’s Mid Season Ball tonight back at the clubrooms, so after a quick drink in the Devon Meadows rooms, let’s get back to the club in your finest Hollywood look and hopefully we are celebrating 3 wins. Next week June 23rd is Sponsors Day, with guest speaker Tony Jewell, 12.30pm June 30 - Past Players Day, Rye v Hastings at Home. Last week even with 5 under 19 boys playing in the seniors, the boys had a nice win against Chelsea. Great to see CJ Heeger Roney in the best with Billy Swayn, Zac

46

Jennings, Lachie Glover and Barnsey. Let have a big win today boys. The reserves were looking good at 1/2 time but fell away in the last quarter. Nice debut and welcome to the club to Zal White, Matt Wylie, Mitch Hillyear, Ryan Taylor, Dayne Thomson and the comeback kid Cam Dunn all played well. We need to get back on the winners list today boys. The seniors battled hard all day only to go down to a well drilled Chelsea team by 27 points. Lets hope big Tom Baker is not out for too long, as he went down in the 3rd quarter with what appeared to be a serious knee injury, fingers crossed its only 4 to 6 weeks. He was playing great footy as well up to that stage with 3 goals. The skipper Adam Kirkwood was awesome all game and was BOG, with Matt McIndoe playing an inspirational game in the ruck, Nick Rowson, Harley “The Animal” Cole, were sensational, as was Tyrren Head and Peter Hampton. We are knocking on the door of the 5 boys and a win today against Devon will be a big step forward.

Crib Point Last week saw Crib Point deliver another mixed bag of football results. The U19’s begun the day by declaring themselves a genuine finals contender come the end of the year with a comprehensive victory over Pearcedale by 51 points. The reserves side followed suit with an impressive win over the Dales by 76 points, providing them with plenty of optimism for the remainder of the year. It was an all too familiar tale for the senior side, however, with the Pies going down by 51 points at the hands of the Panthers. Key position players Nathan McCarthy & Jett Wilson were strong performers in the U19’s victory, featuring among the games best players. In the reserves Cal Campbell & Ben “wig out” Wigan were key players in achieving the win with both providing great rebound coming out of the backline. The senior game saw the precision kicking Ned Shoenon (Shannon) feature in the best alongside Harrison “Dekluey” Dekleuver whom has found his feet in the the seniors after making his debut earlier this year. Today we head to Dromana to take on the Tigers on their home deck. We would love the support as the boys look to secure a win away from home from all three teams. Go Crib!

Footy Notes Dromana

Welcome to Terry Daniher as guest speaker at our MND Luncheon. If you wish to contribute to this worthy cause MND beanies will be on sale. Remember next Saturday night is our Mid Season Ball at Rosebud Country Club so book with Tara & Debbie. Our round 10 game today against Crib Point is for the Edgerton Shield which we hold at present. Last weeks game against Red Hill saw the Seniors unbeaten run come to an end and thankfully unlike last year it may not effect our finals aspirations greatly. The game started off well with Dromana kicking 7 goals to 2 in the first quarter then 4 goals to 3 in the second to lead by 30 points at half time. A scoreless third term by Dromana and a 7 goal to 3 last term by Red Hill saw us go down by 6 points even after leading by 12 points with minutes to go. Holmes slotted 6 for Dromana. The Reserves played great football but inaccuracy was nearly their undoing. They were all over Red Hill in the first term but kicked 2 goals 7 and managed 15 behinds for the game. Trailling by 8 points at the last break they held Red Hill goalless in the last and kicked 3 themselves winning by 11 points. A great effort with a depleted side playing a team 5 places above them.. The first game of the day saw Dromana U19s up against the top of the ladder undefeated team and having depleted numbers with injuries and absences was never going to help with the result an indication of that. Major Raffle tickets are on sale so see Board members for tickets. GO TIGERS!!!

Hastings It is with much sadness as I write these Club notes, it is always sad when you lose a member of your Club, but sadly we lost two Club identitiys in two days. First of Club Life member champion player and great bloke Ron Moncrieff sadly passed away, Ron was a champion of the club, great footballer who regularly represented the MPFL in interleague football, was also a committeeman and coached the reserves for several years, Ron was also a life member of both Hastings and Crib Point, and the two clubs play for the Ron Moncrieff shield each time they play. R.I.P Ron, and deepest sympathies are extended to the Moncrieff family. We are also sad to announce the passing of Ken Stratton, Ken was only with the Club for a short period of time when he became President of our Club at the end of 2017, it was a difficult time for the Club, but Ken rolled up his sleeves and got on with the job, sadly Kens illness did not allow him to see the job thru, and Ken had to step down due to ill health, we extend our sincere condolences to Kens family R.I.P Ken Stratton thankyou for all the effort you gave to our Club. With only one win out of three against Langwarrin it was not a great day for footy, but the Senior team fielded one

of their youngest teams in years which saw them get the 4 points, with Sean Hewitt, PJ Magee and James forecast all making their senior debuts it was a great day for the Club, especially the Hewitt family who had 3 boys in the senior team, great stuff. Pearcedale today

Red Hill The Titanic will never sink, man will never walk on the moon, it is never warm at Red Hill in Winter and Red Hill ones will never beat Dromana this season. Well the impossible can be possible and it happened at Red Hill last week. It was warm in Winter at the Hill and the Ones DID knock off the Tigers. What a great game of football, it’s not called the show grounds for nothing. The Ones once again had the game plan of let a team get away and play catch up, but this time catch up they did. When the Hillmen hit the front the noise eruption made the Hawaiian Volcano sound like a fart in a bath. This win should make other teams think about the Hillmen. A team effort lead by Jake Mold, Noah “the Ark” Turner and “Big M” Marchetti, who kicked three snags as did “Sticks” Ross. The boys need to consolidate with a strong performance today against Somerville. The Magoos let one get away from them, and the other results of the round now makes this weeks game at Somerville a must win for the boys. Lachy Prins and Luke Marchesani flew the flag for the Magoos. The Unders gave an undermanned Dromana a bit of a touch up to the tune of 100 plus points. The word TEAM is well and truly stamped on this group. Kane Hawkins was superb with the footy and “Coxy”Eardley fed the mifielders like a mother bird shoving worms down its chicks throat. Many thanks to the volunteers that help make a home game work. Some jobs are small, some big, but to get them done is much appreciated. Mountain Goat.

Footy Notes Somerville

On a very sunny Sunday we went over to Ballam Park to play Karingal. It was unfamiliar territory for most and a disappointing day with losses across the board. The B grade Netballers showing the rest of the club how it’s done with our only win of the day. The Seniors were in it for most of the day, losing grip in the last. Gillis kicked another 3, while Sedgy, Soppy, Finn and Susie Rowe were all among the best. The reserves were just 2 points in it at 3/4 time to go down by 9 points after being kept scoreless in the last. Shields, Beckett, Yin and Barnes all played well. The 19s were out classed by the Bulls and will be hungry for a win this week. Onwards and upwards when we take on Red hill at home today. SFNC would like to congratulate one of our favourite sons, Ben Sedgwick, who will play his 200th senior game for the club today! Sedgy is as loyal as they come and a much loved larrikin around the club. Sedgy has been in career best form this season and he looks set to continue in front of what should be a big blue and gold crowd. We won’t settle for anything less than a win today. Don’t forget we will be having a celebration at the club Saturday night 16th June, so bring your dancing shoes and prepare for take off. Sedgy & Ryan Gillis will be taking us on a trip around the world. SFNC would also like to send out a big congratulations to Justin Allsopp and Tash on the birth of Oscar. We will happily take him in 2036 under the father-son rule. GO SOMIESSSSS!

Chelsea

spread of young players all performing well most weeks. Standouts were Wheel’s , Silva, Baum, Mitch and Andy VJ. On to the main game and again a pretty tough battle all day but in the end we managed to finish it off in good style. Great team effort !! It has been a while but all of the faithful kept reminding me a win at Rye is always a good win. 2 first gamers in Andy and Tommy and they both stood up, Zane Carter is humming at the minute, Jack delivered up forward and was busy all day. Todd, Trippa and Rhys Hensel all stood up the whole day. Half way there now so more than ever we all need to keep focused and make sure we continue to keep turning up to play. Huge day this week at Headquarters v’s Karingal, so looking forward to this one. Thanks again to Stav and all the Team at O’Briens Real Estate, very pleased to report that both the Netball and Football Cups remain at Beardsworth Ave. Some big Functions coming up so please get behind the Club over the next Month. See You at the Gullery !!

Back to Glover Reserve today as we face off against Rye Footy and Netball Club. With the annual Netball Ball coming up tonight at Trios, hopefully we can be dining and drinking in style while celebrating some on-field & on-court success. We’ve reached the halfway point of the season and it’s fair to say we aren’t quite as high up the ladder as we’d hoped, but the positive is that there’s still 9 rounds to go and we play the majority of these games right here on our home deck. Plenty of time to steady the ship and get back on track! One thing for sure though, doesn’t matter if we win lose or draw, the atmosphere in Flano’s Bar after the games is one of the best in the league. Awards, around the grounds, meat raffles and drink specials with footy, races and rugby on the multiple big screens. Make sure you get in there again today and join in the action! Comedy Night is fast approaching and i have it on good authority that tickets are going very very fast. It’s my favorite function of the year and this one promises to be no different. $30 for a single ticket , $50 double or $250 for your table of 10. It’s coming up on July 7th so mark it in your diary and hit up Mouse for a ticket. See everyone tonight at the Ball and good luck to all DMFNC teams today! GO MEADOWS!

Just a pleasure to get back to Rye last week and enjoy a cracking day’s Footy, 3 really good games. Dan’s chargers although undermanned put up a great effort and had to run out of steam. Great work boy’s, huge improvement on the previous week. Best were Jake, Piddy, Sammy, Tristan, Riv & Patty. The 2’s after a slow start managed to grind out a solid win against a good side, keep turning up to training lad’s the signs are really good. So pleased to see a great

Last week our women’s side played a game of footy under lights with a huge crowd against Seaford. Though they didn’t win it was a fantastic night at the Dales. Their next game is V Karingal 12pm at Ballam Park today. We wish them luck. Last week the other teams travelled to Crib Point with mixed results. A fantastic win to the ones with a return to the team of Bear who booted 5. Lachy Cowell with 5 and singles from L Daniels, A Simmons and T Bravo meant a good win. A great game with lots to celebrate. Our annual ball is Saturday July 7 after the Karingal away game. Tickets are $100 per person and this includes 2 course meal, Photo booth, DJ and drinks package. The ball will be held at Settler’s Run. See Karen for tickets. Should be a fantastic night. Only 2 weeks to go to the Drew Petrie day on June 30. There are still tickets available to this event. At $120 per head or $1000 for a table of 10 this is an event not to be missed with entertainment provided by Marty Fields and our own, Neil Custeron. See Mandy for your tickets. A day like the Drew Petrie day requires lots of helpers. If you have some time to help set up, pack up or work in the outside bar or food tents please come in today and let the committee know. Many hands make light work. We welcome Hastings to Tractor Park today and wish Luke Murray good luck today as he plays his 150th game for the club. Luke has played his whole football life at the Dales from Juniors. Let’s win for Muzza boys! #upthedales

Langwarrin Well here we are back on home soil as we take on Tyabb in this important round 10 clash. Recent results suggest that all games this year are going to be close. This week we are expecting three hard games against the Yabbies. Last week in the unfamiliar clash strip we ventured down to Hastings. The Under 19’s continued their recent great form and ran out easy winners. The 2’s after a week in which we decided that we needed to reset our season, managed to play as a team with purpose, and have a win. Our seniors, as always showed signs of great attacking footy. Combining well from defence, we would at times cough up the ball, with the result being that the well performed Hastings would then quickly rebound, and hurt us on the scoreboard. It was good to have Peachy back, as he showed the way with his hardness for the contest. Good players also included Tuddy, Boof, Parker, Sean, Siz , Patto and Albanese who kicked 3. Let’s hope that we have 3 wins today, ther’s not a better place to be than up in the rooms after a succesful Langy day. Go Langy !! In social notes it was good to see so many up at the club on the Sunday for our $9.9k draw. Our sponsor of the week is A & L Cabinets. many thanks to Adrian and his team for his support.

Netball Preview Top spot goes up for grabs By David Nagel Langwarrin and Tyabb are the two best performed teams in 2018 and will square off in one of the most appetising contests of the season at Lloyd Park today. Sara Drain has the Kangaroos playing an attacking brand of netball, scoring more goals than any team in the competition, but conceding more than any of the topfour. It’s a free-flowing style that no team has been able to combat this season, with the Kangaroos sitting proudly at the top of the ladder after a perfect eight-zip start to their campaign. Drain has been one of the stars of the competition this year, while Emily Bennet, Jayde Travers, Brooke Kiely and Amy Slefendorfas are also playing key roles in a tight-knit and successful combination. The Yabbies are very well balanced all over the court with Birgitta Nemaric, Isabella and Kayla Brown, Kellie Anderson and Caitlin Watson playing some great netball this year, while Dani Slaughter has moved the ball with precision through the midcourt. This one will be a thrilling contest. The Yabbies will inflict Langy’s first loss of the season and move to the top of the ladder with a two-goal triumph. Another crucial game takes place at Dromana, where the fifth-placed Tigers host second-placed Crib Point today. Dromana overcame a slow start to roll Red Hill last week while the Magpies had a week off after a forfeit against Pearcedale. This is a real crunch game for the Tigers who need to win to stay in touch with the top four. Emily Pratt, Bev Miller, Emily La Roche and Ruby Wilson have been consistent contributors for the Tigers, while Natasha Petroff and Brianna Pratt have also been key players at times. The Magpies are rolling along nicely and look a strong chance to defend their title from last year. Shaye Williams, Tessa Moncrieff and Ebony McDermott have been strong, while Alicia Coventry and Adrienne Harris have been ticking all the boxes. Cribby will be too strong in the end and win by six. Karingal will look to make it back-to-back victories with an away trip to Chelsea. The Bullettes were far too strong for Somerville last week and will be looking to close the gap on the top-three teams in the competition. Claudia Whitfort played a great game through the midcourt against the Eagles, while Abuk Kenyang was a dominant force at the attacking end of the court. Lisa Donnellan, Zoe Larrieu, Rachel McLennan and Katja Jansen will give their all for the Gulls, but the Bullettes will be too strong.

58

And Somerville will be eyeing off its fourth win of the season when the Eagles host Red Hill today. The Eagles have a core group of players that are really sticking to their guns with Jaimee and Maddi Peney, Dani Planner, Sara Tanner and Maria Neophytou staying strong under a fair degree of pressure. Red Hill had a great start against Dromana last week and, despite getting rolled in the end, will take some confidence from matching it with a top-four contender. Sienna Wills, Isabella Cuming, Nicola Mold, Kate Patterson and Georgia Vines will give their all for the visitors and lead them to a seven-or-eight goal victory. Devon Meadows has the bye against Rye while Hastings is scheduled to play Pearcedale who have struggled to field a side in recent weeks.

Jess Fletcher was in great form for Karingal during the Bullettes C Grade win over Somerville.

Maddy Roberts keeps a steady hand during Somerville’s B Grade victory over Karingal.

Netball Notes Tyabb Thursday night netball under lights at the pond! D Grade played some inconsistent netball but were lucky enough to come away with a 2 goal win. Georgia & Mikayla did a huge amount of work bringing the ball out of defence & Leah was able to finish off her shots accurately. Another step in the right direction! The C grade girls had another close game this week ending in their second draw of the season. Lace was dominant in GK & forced many turnovers to push the girls into attack & Jayde worked tirelessly in WD bringing the ball down the court. Some poor finishing cost us but we were able to come away with 2 points & we look forward to showing improvement next week. Another test for B grade with yet another injury causing some changes amongst our group. But we were able to show some extreme flexibility in order to overcome all of the positional changes that came our way & still maintain plenty of our attacking & defensive consistency across the court. Best on to Lenny who showed some incredible reading of the play, making sure our attackers had plenty of ball coming their way. A grade were able to put together one of our best performances of the season with our altered team showing plenty of exciting netball throughout the match. We had a fantastic start to the game and were able to push on from quarter time to really stamp our authority on the match. Kell was named best on for her extremely well timed leads and ability to create plenty of space throughout the attack end.

Somerville It was a tough day at the office for Somerville in Round 9. Karingal put us through our paces with some very strong netball, and unfortunately only let us away with the one win. D Grade - We knew Karingal would be a strong competitor but wow that was a wake up call! We have a lot to do to be at their level but it is not an impossible task. Onwards and upwards, let’s get back out there and work hard to get back on the winners list! C Grade - The C girls knew they would be up against it with Karingal on Sunday. Sometimes you just get beaten by a better team but it doesn’t hurt as much when you know you’ve done your best. We will regroup and keep pushing for the next win. B Grade - This was forecast to be the game of the year for the B Grade, and it sure was. We knew that we matched up well against them. The talk on and off the court was amazing and the girls fought hard to come away with the well earned win. A Grade - The A Grade were up against a classy Karingal outfit this week. The score line might have blown out but it didn’t look like it from the sidelines with plenty of pressure being applied across the court.

We are definitely looking to recoup and get the 4 points today. Today we host Red Hill at home. We are intending on bouncing back and taking Round 9 as a learning curve. We will be back firing today and we are ready to take the chocolates home in all grades today. Dont forget; Around The World function - 16th of June Mid Season Ball - 30th of June

Rye It was a strong start for the Demons last Saturday at our home ground. D grade had a very good star. Everyone playing some good, solid Netball! Demons defensive pressure was too strong for Chelsea’s attackers. Demons attackers played there best game yet, shooting incredibly well! Great passes and teamwork saw Rye take the win 33-22. Great job girls, keep on bringing the wins home! Best on: Bianca C grade had a tough battle up against Chelsea. Chelsea had a strong and versatile team, that Rye couldn’t match up against. Poor decision making and errors made Chelsea really push out the lead in the second half. Final score: Rye 21, Chelsea 45 Demons will look to improve there overall game coming up against Devon Meadows this week. Best on: Emily B grade had an incredible game, matching Chelsea in the first half. There was strong defensive pressure from the Demons in defence but Demons couldn’t score off there turnovers. Chelsea scored off our errors and took the lead from then on. Final score Chelsea 43 def Rye 25. Best on: Lauren Good luck to all this week up against Devon Meadows. Go Demons!!!!

Hastings Under 17’s had another great win, continuing their season improving every week. Big challenge this week against the ladder leaders. Best player for D grade was Georgia playing her best game for the season. C grade keep battling away, improving every week, I’m a win is not too far away. B grade had a great contest with 6 under 17’s filling in playing their second match for the day. They put up a good fight until the very end. A grade playing top of the table were right in the match but unfortunately got over run in the last quarter. With such a young team the future is bright.

Netball Notes Karingal

Was a perfect weekend for netball, our U17’s started the weekend off with a great win against Devon Meadows at home on the Saturday. Some great teamwork displayed on court by our girls, they have really gelled together as a team the last few weeks & are getting the results on court. D grade were unstoppable from the get go against Somerville with Brittany and Bec dominating up the defense end and kept Somie to 20 goals against our 48. C grade controlled the game as soon as they stepped onto the court, winning 46-18. Such a strong team who work so well together, always hard to pick a best on as every player contributes endlessly week in and week out. B grade was the match of the day, with both teams undefeated so far this season. Unfortunately our girls fell short by 5 goals breaking our winning streak. Great game girls. A grade finished the day off with a ripper win, giving us 4/5 wins for the round. Keep up the good work girls, we’re now halfway through the season! Today 4 teams travel to Chelsea as U17’s have a week off. Good luck to all teams! GO BULLETTES

Langwarrin Round 9 saw us travel down to Hastings on a beautiful sunny winters day. Our under 17’s kicked the day off looking forward to seeing an improved result from when they took on the Blues girls a fortnight ago, and they did exactly that. Whilst still going down at the final whistle, the girls fought hard and showed massive improvements in their game. Next up D grade took the court and blew our opposition away. We controlled the match well from start to finish keeping Hastings scoreless in the first half. Our defensive pressure was amazing and helped us solidify a great win. C grade worked hard for a comfortable win. Connections are building strong in this team and it’s coming at the right end of the season. Our focus is set on being a strong and fit finals contender. Our B babes are having an awesome season so far. Each member is having a ball on court and they all seem to be enjoying their netball, and it is speaking volumes on the scoreboard. The girls have gelled amazingly and will definitely be a finals contender come the seasons end. A grade was the match of the day! The match was fast and intense and both teams played strong physical yet clinical netball. Skills were on show and our girls did not disappoint, coming away with a solid win. Our A girls are going from strength to strength under the expertise of head coach Sara Drain, and will welcome any challenge set by our rivals. Next week we welcome Tyabb at home in what should a great battle. Go Roos

Red Hill The 17s this round against Dromana was exciting , 2 versing 3 on the ladder . The intensity & determination was there from both teams . As the game progressed the Redhill girls stood tall with the strength we have seen each week to take home the points. The D grade girls did a fantastic job with with several key players absent. They pulled it all together in the fourth quarter - bit late in the game but shows they can do it. We welcome Lucy to our team. A season best game for our C graders against a very rattled Dromana. A return to the court for Abby King and Ash Swallow, has delivered a much needed speed to our mid court and goals while helping to strengthen team versatility. It was a challenge for B grade with a Sunday game meaning we were missing a few key players, but considering we were playing the 4th placed team the girls did well. With different combinations during the game at both ends keeps proving the versatility we have in our squad of players. Down today but only on the scoreboard girls not in intensity, passion or commitment to team goals. A grade . If the ninth placed team comes within 10 goals of the fourth placed team the A grade competition must be tight. Or we are finally working together as a team across four quarters in all areas of the court! Our goalers stood up and led the team. With two starting 7 players out and an early injury girls I’m already excited about our round 16 rematch. Thanks Rhi who played 7 tough quarters of netball today!

Netball Notes Chelsea A strong first quarter from Chelsea D Grade wasn’t enough to win against Rye last weekend. It was a hard fought game and the girls showed a lot of positivity throughout. Shout out to Awatea who worked really hard in the defensive ring, and had her hands over every ball. Well done to Rye on a convincing 11 point win. C grade had a strong game this week and were able to come away with the victory. Megan worked hard all game in defense picking up plenty of intercepts and providing great direction on court. Casey’s feeds into the circle were on point making it very easy for the goalers to get into good shooting positions. A great team effort by all. B grade welcomed Tia to the side this week and the girls got off to a strong start. The team has really started to gel and play to their strengths. Liv was strong in centre and fought hard all game. Tia was a game changer and was best on this week. The team has showed so much improvement, and we are looking forward to the rest of the year. It was great to have our first win. Well done to Chelsea Netball squad, coming away with the perpetual OBrien Cup against Rye for 2018. Well done also to Chelsea Football who did the same, and many thanks to OBrien Real Estate for sponsoring a great day!

intensity up for the whole game. The many changes that occurred throughout the game proves a versatile team with a lot of trust in each other. It was a well fought win. BOC went to Kylie who was a driving force all game. C grade got the job done but it wasn’t pretty. The girls stuck at it and rewarded turnovers however it wasn’t the standard our girls are known for but they are a tough unit that doesn’t give up. BOC went to Ange who killed it in defense and provided a drive down the court. B grade had a challenge in front of them against a very strong and physical Pearcedale but our girls pushed and rallied all day to give a come from behind win securing their lead in the 4th quarter which was amazing. Our defensive end held the team up all day constantly creating turnovers for the goalers to convert. Great team effort. Unfortunately Pearcedale didn’t supply an A grade meaning our girls had the week off. Rested and ready for a great match next week. The Black and White Ball is next week! Hope to see everyone there for a great night. This week we have Dromana which will be a tough day but will ensure 5 great games! Go Crib!

Dromana

Devon Meadows Crib Point The U/17’s started off our day up against a very strong, experienced Pearcedale. Our girls kept their heads up all game but were just a bit out of their league. BOC went to Emma down in defense who stood up very strong and never stopped trying. D grade welcomed Carly to the team and who played amazingly in defense. The girls started hard kept their

Today we see Rye travel down the freeway to the Den. We hope to see a great start to the day with a few 4 points on the board followed by a great night at Trios for our Annual ball! A Grade - A night game in Tyabb. We knew this was going to be tough, we started on the back foot & found ourselves having to work double, to pull ourselves back into the game. Our second half, Tyabb came out harder & faster. Our defensive end worked tirelessly to get ball possession with efforts at each ball, early pressure over

www.aflsoutheast.com.au

Netball Notes the ball & keeping the opposition busy. We fought hard through the game to find our attacking players, but Tyabb’s experienced players read the ball quickly. Thanks to Tyabb to accomodate the night game. BOC: Kate May - huge four quarters, great work on her opposition & gained possessions within the set plays! B Grade - Started off with Tyabb getting the jump on us with their fast moving play. To our credit we keep our heads up and chipping away at our team goals. We won the third by a goal and went into the fourth feeling much more settled. Tyabb won easy but we had some little wins along throughout the game which was great. If we keep working on these the four points won’t be far off. Super game by Ella who worked hard to get front position and contest every ball. BOC - Kylie who has stepped up from C to play with us. Each week Kylie is getting stronger & more confidence. Her accuracy and strong hold is such an asset. Awesome work Kylie! Will this weeks BOC be on the court or at the ball? Go Panthers C Grade - This week with a few girls away we welcome Rach, Kara and Marlo to the team. The girls started really strong. In the 2nd we really struggled with our ball movement and Tyabb got on top of us. To the girls credit they fought back hard in the second half moving the ball well and the defensive pressure was second to none resulting in the game ending in a draw. It was really good to see so much improvement in the team game this week. BOC Katie for a solid 4 quarter defensive effort. D Grade - Had a very tough game against tyabb with the possibility of a win on the cards. We saw 3 under 17s (Georgia, trinity and Courtney) step up, each holding there own amongst some experienced opposition. We had a lot of ball possession and turn overs and although we had some great ball movement tyabb took the win by just 2 goals. Although it was a loss, it was a solid game by our combination of d grade and 17s girls.
