Division 1 - Queen’s Birthday Round 10 Saturday 9th June 2018

AFL South East This is a very important week for football in the AFL South East Region; and not just for clubs in the MPNFL striving for a finals spot in Divisions 1 and 2. This is the week of the Regional Junior Championships, where boys and girls from the AFL South East region will participate in the carnival. Players from the Frankston & District Junior Football League (FDJFL), South East Juniors (SEJ) and the Mornington Peninsula Junior Football League (MPJFL) will all be participating in the carnival. Yarra Ranges makes up the fourth region involved. Matches took place at Beaconsfield’s Holm Park on Wednesday night (June 6), which are followed by matches this weekend at Frankston Park and Shepley Oval Dandenong. These are very important junior championships for many boys in the Under 13 to Under 17 age groups and the girls in the Under 15 and Under 18 age groups. The carnival is an important stepping stone in the Dandenong Stingrays pathway and is now aligned with both the Melbourne and St Kilda Football Clubs’ Next Generation Academies (NGA). For many of the participants, the Regional Junior Championships have become an important stepping stone in the pathway to higher honours, such as TAC, VFL , AFL and AFLW. There are a number of players (too numerous to mention) currently on AFL lists, who played in these championships and then went to the AFL via the Stingrays. This carnival provides a perfect platform for our future stars. While on the subject of junior football, last weekend was another reminder of how poor behaviour negatively effects a round of football. Across the region we once again had anger and language toward umpires, a number of reports for striking and two brawls between spectators and players - the latter under investigation. As a league we can take action by suspending players or fining clubs, but in the end, it is up to clubs to oversee the culture of the organisation. Leadership at club level will go a long way to avoiding the poor behaviour we are seeing in recent times. As a Commission we are having to deal with way too many incidents.
On a brighter note, we again saw a tight round of MPNFL football last weekend with the top-four sides playing each other in close encounters. Sorrento over Edi Asp by two points and an improving Mt Eliza by 19 points over YCW. At the other end of the table Mornington won its second game of the year by four points, changing places with Seaford at the foot of the table. Special mention also to Aaron Edwards who kicked 13 goals for Pines against Bonbeach. The top four will be looking over their shoulder as the Pythons make their move. I look forward to being at Sorrento this week for the return match against YCW, after YCW took the honours in Round 1. The Sorrento administration must be relishing the string of home games against quality opposition to entertain their high-profile luncheon guests, which last week included NBA star Andrew Bogut. On Sunday I equally look forward to being at Red Hill to see them take on undefeated leaders Dromana. Red Hill has been in good form lately, but this is a massive challenge. The fight for fifth spot on the ladder is well and truly on so Red Hill could cement a spot with a win and Rye and Somerville both fall to Chelsea and Karingal respectively. Within the next few weeks we will know the MPNFL football and netball finals venues, which will once again see a number of clubs hosting at their venue. Some dates that are locked in are the Division 2 Grand Final at Frankston Park on Saturday 8 September and Division 1 Grand Final also at Frankston Park on Sunday 16 September. The MPNFL Best and Fairest Awards Night will be held at Mornington Racecourse on Monday 3 September. Finally a reminder that we will be supporting Neale Daniher’s Fight MND cause next weekend with the ‘Sock it to MND Round’ in both Divisions. Enjoy the long weekend of top level community football. AFL Vic Country State honours for local stars Kananook Bulls’ stars Sean Martin and Joel Nicol and St Francis Xavier tyros Kelvin Walters and Shaun Doll will represent the south east region with pride at this month’s AFL National Inclusion Carnival to be held in Tasmania from June 18 to 23. Martin, Nicol and Doll will represent Vic Metro, while Walters will pull on the Vic Country jumper with pride after AFL Victoria announced its squads for this year’s championships. Two squads of 16 of Victoria’s best footballers with an intellectual disability, including five emergencies across both squads, have been chosen to don the Big-V jumper as they prepare to take on the top talent from across the country. Ten players will return to the Metro squad from last year’s premiership side, while six new players along with four emergencies from the WISE Employment Metropolitan Conference- Victorian FIDA Football League (VFFL) will pull on representative colours for the first time. The Metro squad features representatives from ten different WISE Employment Metropolitan Conference VFFL clubs, with Williamstown Seagulls (five), Ferntree Gully Eagles (three) and Sandown Cobras (three) boasting the most representatives. Williamstown Seagulls coach Rob Klemm will once again lead the Metro squad as Head Coach for the fourth consecutive year after leading his team to a 53-point victory over NSW/ACT in last year’s Grand Final. Fellow state team Vic Country will welcome seven new players to its representative squad, with 10 players returning to the side after finishing third in 2017. All 11 regional clubs within the VFFL are represented, with eight players from the CVGT Australia Northern Conference selected, while a further eight players hail from the Western Conference. Selection to the Vic Country squad comes following the first representative practice match between the two country VFFL conferences, which saw over 30 regional players showcase their skills at Bendigo’s Weeroona Oval. Leading the Country squad for the first time is GV Stars coach Steve Reeves. With experience coaching senior interleague with the Kyabram District Football League and Dookie Utd, Reeves will take over from Matt Deegan after two years at the helm. Held annually, the AFL National Inclusion Carnival provides an opportunity for footballers with an intellectual disability to represent their state in a week-long competition. All states and territories will have a team represented in the competition, with squads from Queensland, Tasmania, South Australia, NSW/ACT, Northern Territory and Western Australia joining Vic Metro and Vic Country. The 2018 National Inclusion Carnival will take place in Launceston, Tasmania from June 18-23.

The true heavyweights of football Does it get any better than this? By David Nagel Sorrento and Frankston YCW have been the undisputed heavyweights of the Mornington Peninsula for the best part of a decade – providing a Tale of the Tape that Jeff Horn would be proud of as he heads into tomorrow morning’s fight against Terrence Crawford in Vegas. But while Horn and Crawford are currently caught up in a war of words, there’s nothing but a healthy show of respect from both clubs heading into their second showdown for the season. Frankston YCW has won eight flags since the turn of the century, a remarkable record that began in 2003 – then went through a dry spell for six years – before the flood gates opened in devastating fashion in 2010. The Stonecats have won seven premierships in eight years, with their only failing coming in 2013 when they started short-priced favourites before bowing out in straight sets. The Stonecats have certainly learnt from that lesson, winning nine consecutive finals on their way to the last four premierships on the trot. Since their hot streak began in 2010 the Stonecats have played 172 games, winning 147, losing 24, with one draw against Edithvale-Aspendale in round 18, 2016, adding up to a winning percentage of 85.47.
They’ve played in 19 finals, winning 15 – including seven grand finals – for a winning strike rate of 78.95 percent when the whips are cracking in August and September. The Sharks – well they pale ever so slightly in comparison. Premiership victories in 2004 and 2008 were the precursors to a spectacular run, matching the Stonecats with a hat-trick of victories from 2010 to 2012 and backing that up with triumphs in 2014 and ’17. Seven flags in 14 years is certainly not to be sneezed at. The Sharks have only missed finals once since 2010, when a 9-7 record fell short of qualification for the 2016 finals series. During that time the Sharks have played 159 matches, winning 129 of those for an impressive strike rate of 81.13 percent. They’ve played in 18 finals, winning 13 – including five grand finals – for a winning percentage of 72.22 percent in the biggest and best games of all. So there we have it – 15 premierships combined since the turn of the century, 12 since 2010, and five premierships celebrated in the same year (2010, ’11, ’12, ’14 and ’17). It’s a Tale of the Tape that even Jeff Horn would be proud of!

Footy Preview - Division 1 Sharks on the hunt for redemption By David Nagel
The old saying goes that ‘Revenge is a dish best served cold’ – meaning vengeance is more satisfying when exacted sometime after the harm that instigated it. It just has to be Sorrento’s motto when the Sharks welcome its round-one conqueror Frankston YCW to David McFarlane Reserve today. That 63-point loss to the Stonecats at Frankston Park on Easter Sunday hurt the Sharks badly. Not in the overall scheme of things mind you – because one round doesn’t make a footy season – but more from a pride point of view after one of the biggest build ups in MPNFL history. Sorrento, the all-conquering champions of the Nepean League, were made to look second rate in their first serious hit out in the top flight in many a long year. A proud club copped it from all quarters, on social media, in the streets, there was nowhere to hide for the proud and mighty Sharks. Saturday 9 June would have been pencilled into the calendar very quickly indeed by coach Luke Tapscott as he enjoyed his Easter Monday off. Well…that day has arrived…and the chance for redemption on the huge stage of Queen’s Birthday weekend footy! We all knew the Sharks would bounce back, but to what degree was the question and Tapscott and his army of premiership players have done so in spectacular fashion – to the point where they now lead the competition. A six-game winning streak came to an end at the hands of Frankston Bombers in round eight – the only blip on a familiar looking radar pattern. Skipper James Hallahan has led from the front, with his brother Mitch and players like Shannon Gladman, Zach Byrns and ruckman Ryan Williams giving plenty of drive through the midfield. The backline has held firm, with James Brigden becoming one of the most reliable defenders in the business, with Jackson and Daniel Grant, Nick Marston, Tom Langford and Ryan Potter offering a mountainous layer of support. And the Sharks aren’t shy on talent up forward either, with twin towers Nick Corp and Chris Dawes kicking seven goals between them against Edi-Asp last week to make all the difference in a close finish. They covered for the loss of Leigh Poholke brilliantly. The Stonecats – well they are in very unfamiliar territory, losing their last three games to slip to third place on the ladder. They’re still in touch with the Sharks, with just a game and percentage of separation – but that exact comment can be used when referencing the Stonecats with the sixth-placed Frankston Bombers.
8
The reigning four-time champions are stuck in second gear at the moment and failing to negotiate some very heavy traffic! But a horror run with injuries is providing several opportunities to stand up and be counted. Big-man Macklin Raine is becoming a more complete footballer in the absence of champion Ash Eames, while Lachie Street, who has had a sensational season in defence, drifted forward last week to kick three goals and cover the loss of the injured Paul Minchington. Champion midfielder Kyle Hutchison also showed his versatility by kicking four – all positive signs as the Stonecats look to build towards another September campaign. But this one, well this is going to be difficult. If ever a team has the motivation and quality to send the Stonecats sliding to their fourth-consecutive defeat, it’s the Sharks. Revenge – well it will be a dish best served cold as the Sharks strike late on their way to a 17-point victory. A cracking start to round 10 continues at Emil Madsen Reserve when Mt Eliza welcomes a dangerous Frankston Bombers to its lair. The Redlegs lost two of their first three games but have since been super-consistent, winning five of their next six including a confidence-boosting 19-point victory over Frankston YCW last week.
James Freeman has been one of the most dangerous forwards in the competition for Mt Eliza this year.
www.aflsoutheast.com.au
Footy Preview - Division 1 All the talk about the Mounties has centred around their dangerous forward set up with Jordan Moncrieff, Jordan Capkin and James Freeman living up to their reputation with seven goals between them against the Stonecats last weekend. That star trio also hurt the Bombers in round one – combining for nine goals in a thrilling two-point victory that set the Redlegs on their way and denied the Bombers the perfect initiation into division-one football. But there’s much more to this Redlegs’ outfit than meets the eye. Kyle Docherty, Shane Tennant and Aaron Dunne repelled many attacking moves from the Stonecats, while Luke Webster held his own in the ruck, providing starting midfielders like Josh Curren, Dylan Barry, Blaine Coates and Mick West with the confidence to strut their stuff. The Redlegs know they will be in for a tough battle against the Bombers, who have played brilliantly since the interleague weekend. They backed up a 10-point victory over Sorrento with an unexpectantly easy victory over Rosebud last week and appear to be playing their best football of the season right now. Boom-recruit Jarrad Grant had a day out against the Buds, booting six, while big names like Ben Northover, Dale Sutton and Jason Kingsbury played really key roles in the victory. The Bombers would appear to have the ammunition to shoot the Redlegs’ stars down, with Northover and Ryan Marks-Logan two of the most effective defenders in the competition. We’re in for another beauty here – but the Redlegs at home will get the job done by 13 points. Round 10 continues next week with Edi-Asp hosting Bonbeach, Seaford welcoming Pines, while Mornington will look to leapfrog Rosebud into eighth position when the two sides collide at Alexandra Park.

Frankston Bombers
Today we welcome the Frankston Bombers FNC and the guests attending the Presidents Lunch. Great day at YCW last Saturday with the footy sides all coming away with wins. For the 2nd week in a row it was 1st v 2nd in the Unders. We kept them scoreless in the opening term and held a solid 33 point 1/2 time lead. We lead by 44 at 3/4 time and although losing the last qtr 3 goals to 1, we recorded another win to cement top spot. Beau booted 3 and Kobe & Housey a couple each. Best were Elliot, Aiden Smith, Foss, Bakes & Nat Turner. In a low scoring game the Reserves led by a point at 1/2 time, but failed to score a goal in a tight 3rd term. We kicked the only 3 goals of the last to win by 18. Buz kicked a couple and best were Kenty, Danks, Thorpey, Jacko & the Skip. The Senior game went goal for goal in the 1st qtr, with the Redlegs up by 3 points. We extended the lead to 14 at 1/2 time and led narrowly at 3/4 time. YCW levelled the game early in the last, but we steadied with the final 3 goals to win by 19. Cappy & Nath kicked 3 apiece and Moncrieff & Freeman 2. Best were Moncrieff, Tuna, Dylan Barry (Welcome to the Club), Dock, Tenno & Nath. Congrats to Westy on his debut last week & to Trent who made his long awaited debut a fortnight ago. Good luck to “Skinny” Dunne after he sustained a broken collarbone last week. Social: Annual Ball @ M’ton Racecourse - Sat 23rd - $140 (Netballers & U/19’s $120) inc. live entertainment, cocktail food & drinks. Redleg. @mtelizafc
Welcome aboard to Bomber fans young & old as we spar with our old rivals, the Mounties. It is a pleasure for our club to be involved in such a great competition where we sit 6th, yet only a game & % from second at the mid point of the season. Each game is vital in our quest for success & we wish all in the red & black good luck on the fields and courts today. Our trip down the coast proved fruitful last week with a solid senior win against the ‘Buds at a venue that is not always kind to us. Jarrad was great with 6 majors as Sutton D gave him great service out of the middle while Bucks was unpassable down back. Hard work for the Ressies, but great to see young Fuzz named as the best Bomber along with Groves & Cuddy. Awesome to see the unders have another great win with a super team performance. Thursday nights at Headquarters are getting a spruce up & we invite all to get amongst the fun. Prior to Beau naming the team, the new Gameface MPNFL Footy Show will be up on the big screen as our old mate Blacky & his crew keep us up to date with the competition. After the footy show finishes, there will be a new club segment, Know Your Bomber. Each week there will be an interview of a Bombers legend & their story of being part of this great club. In addition to recognizing the highlights of a club gun, there may be a laugh or two and everyone will get to know that Bomber. Meals will be served & of course the bar will be open. Cheer loud & barrack hard & have a great day at the footy.

Footy Notes Sorrento Again, last week we were spoilt with another brilliant day for footy. The grounds in great nick, weather was perfect and for those at the luncheon, they were fortunate to have the great Andrew Bogut in the house. On top of that we were in for two great contests, in the Reserves 4th v 5th and the seniors 1st v 3rd. The Scoobs was a tightly fought contest with both defences on top and goals as hard to find as a hair on Dave Caspars head. It was a battle to the end with Edi Asp finishing off better in front of goal. So we’ve played everyone with 9 rounds completed and what we know is our best will compete. Today we get a chance to knock off 1 of the top dogs. Round 1 was a great contest between these two sides, we expect no different today. A different result would be nice. The seniors was a great contest with the ball zipping from end to end in a high speed game. We had chances to put them away in the third but didn’t bury them when on top, so quality sides keep coming. We were fortunate to be in front when the siren sounded, importantly locking away 4 points. On top of the ladder we should be as happy as pigs in you know what, but something has burned in the guts since Easter Sunday. Today’s our chance for redemption. Thought of the week: If you forget the joke about the boomerang, will it come back to you!
Blooding young talent is always exciting and provides opportunities to gain experience on the big stage, which may prove to be invaluable in time. Again the effort couldn’t be questioned and it was an entertaining spectacle but we left empty handed. Sauce was dominant in the ruck, Wags and Riz battled hard all day. Kyle banged through 4 majors. ***Queens Birthday Sunday, tomorrow 10th June is our $10K Draw, limited tickets available, see Redders or Hoddo for your chance to win. ***The Premiers That Were - Celebrating 3 YCW Premiership Coaches. Come along to a great evening in honour of 10 YCW Premierships won by 3 coaches, 7th July at Frankston RSL, see Redders or Gerard for tickets. Frankston YCW This week we travel to David MacFarlane Reserve, Sorrento for the first time this millenium, to compete against a formidable opponent in 2 games. Doubtful there will be white pointers on display this week, be smart rug up! The Unders, after a reactive start and a 4 goal quarter time deficit, almost squared the ledger for the final 3 stanzas. The effort could not be questioned throughout. Caleb, Cal & Jordan were solid contributors and Josh slotted 3. The Two’s showed glimpses of real quality and tried valiantly all game. A game of high standard, Kingy was a 4 quarter contributor well supported by Jake and Patty D. and Chunk kicked a couple.

Young talent shines under the bright lights By David Nagel
A huge crowd flocked to Beaconsfield’s Holm Park Reserve on Wednesday night to watch some fine young talent strut its stuff on night one of the SEDA 2018 AFL South East Regional Junior Championships. The most promising young talent from the Frankston Districts, Mornington Peninsula, South East and Yarra Ranges Junior Football Leagues took part in games in under 13 to 17s for boys and under 15 and 18s for girls.
“Ryan Jacobs (Frankston Dolphins) and Liam Stephens (Carrum Patterson Lakes) were very good up forward and Colby Nanya (CPL) gave us some great drive off half back and through the midfield,” Freeman said. “Mitchell Harvey (Frankston Rovers), the nephew of Rob, was very good and used the ball well and I thought our skipper Daniel Otto (Langwarrin) also had a big impact. But you could name every player, they all did themselves very proud tonight.”
A total of 22 teams will play 24 matches over three days, with Frankston Park and Shepley Oval in Dandenong to take over the reins from Beaconsfield for the last two days of competition on Saturday 9 and Monday 11 June.
Freeman’s team will play its next game against the Mornington Peninsula (MPJFL) at Shepley Oval Dandenong at 10am on Saturday morning.
The Queen’s Birthday carnival, an important stepping stone in the Dandenong Stingrays Pathway, has grown in significance over the years and is now aligned with both the Melbourne and St Kilda Football Club’s Next Generation Academies (NGA).

Former St Kilda player Peter Freeman has taken the reins of the FDJFL Under 15s, who started their campaign in spectacular fashion with a dominant victory over SEJ in the opening game of the carnival. Freeman said narrowing down such a talented squad of players had proven extremely difficult. “We had a squad of 72 that trained with us, and getting down to 25 was a big challenge,” Freeman said from the changerooms after the match. “We spent a lot of time watching different games and really focussed on boys with the right attitude but also boys that had the leg speed and body strength to cope with the slippery conditions of night football. “We focussed on our structures as well and not getting sucked into the contest and keeping our shape around the footy. The kids have all got fantastic character and showed tonight they have thoroughly earned their selection.” Freeman said players from 11 different teams were represented, giving a wide cross-section of talent the opportunity to shine in front of Dandenong Stingrays talent scouts.

“We all like to win, but this is about developing the boys to play at the highest level they can and we picked boys that we think can go further with their football,“ he said. “They played out of position at times, but the main thing was to make sure they gave 100-percent effort, they did that, and shared the ball around like a good football team. They lowered their eyes, brought the ball back through the corridor as instructed, they basically played the way they’ve been training.” Freeman was full of praise for his entire list but, when pushed, gave special mention to a few players that stood out on the night.

The Dandenong Southern Stingrays staved off an undermanned Sandringham Dragons outfit to emerge victors by 68 points on a brisk Sunday morning at Shepley Oval Dandenong. Boasting six changes due to Vic Country selection, the Stingrays’ impressive squad led for the entire day before blowing the game apart in the last quarter to win 15.15.106 to 5.4.34. AFL Victoria TAC Cup veterans Angus Paterson, Riley Bowman, Jai Taylor, Jamie Plumridge and Matthew Gahan all led from the front, collecting plenty of disposals and having a widespread impact. Equally impressive were the efforts of Matthew Cottrell and Ned Cahill who both finished the day with three goals. Down back, Matthew Cumming, Lachlan Stenning and Matthew Gahan were pillars of defence, standing firm against a worthy forward line, whilst Lachlan Stenning ran straight and hard all day. “The game really could have gone either way in the end with so many changes, but we were fortunate enough to get across the line due to the work rate across the board,” said Stingrays’ coach Craig Black. “The focus the boys are brining each week, no matter who plays, is very impressive. The group is pushing each other along and making sure no one is taking short cuts.” The first quarter was a little one-way traffic, but the skills were off due to the very slippery ball. Riley Bowman managed an early goal, quickly followed by two others through Reid Nanscawen and Cottrell before the Dragons were finally on the scoreboard. To close off the quarter Cahill split the big sticks, which allowed the Stingrays to come into the huddle with a 20-point lead. The second quarter saw the home side flex its muscle with six more goals to take a 46-point lead to the main break. Goals came through six individual goal kickers with Bowman, Cahill and Cottrell all managing their second for the day. More impressively though was the hard work of the mids, while the defenders did well to limit the Dragons to two measly points. The third started a little differently with Sandringham managing to kick two goals in a row. The young Rays seemed slow to react to the change of pace. The Dragons started to look dangerous but couldn’t reap the rewards. Dandenong needed their leaders to stand up in the face of the Dragons momentum – and the likes of Campbell Hustwaite, Jake Frawley, Plumridge, Bowman and Taylor, along with the Cumming twins did just that. Frawley was menacing in the middle, Gahan and Cumming were marking everything in sight, whilst Paterson, Bowman and Stephen Cumming bullied their opponents on the repeat inside fifty entries which came through Lachlan McDonnell, Cottrell and Plumridge.
The Stingrays added two more goals, but allowed the Dragons to wrestle momentum and grow a little in confidence. Patterson marked strongly on the siren and kicked truly giving the Stingrays a comfortable lead of 56 points at the end of the third term. The last quarter saw the Stingrays continue to add scoreboard pressure, finishing off with four more goals, but disappointingly allowed a couple of late goals to the Dragons through a lack of discipline. The win puts the Stingrays in good stead, securing top spot once again on the TAC Cup ladder, whilst enjoying the weeks rest due to the TAC Cup bye. In two weeks- time Dandenong return to Shepley Oval to take on the Oakleigh Chargers who are the only TAC Cup team to inflict a loss on the impressive Stingrays unit. TAC CUP RESULTS Dandenong Stingrays 4.3 8.7 11.11 15.16.106 Sandringham Dragons 1.1 1.3 3.3 5.4.34 Stingrays Goals: Matthew Cottrell 3, Ned Cahill 3, Riley Bowman 2, Jamie Plumridge, Angus Patterson, Campbell Hustwaite, Bailey Angwin, Lachlan Williams, Jafar Ocaa, Reid Nanscawen. Netball Preview - Division 1 The bigger picture becomes clearer By David Nagel It took until the final round of the first half of the season to become apparent – but Edithvale-Aspendale has emerged as the biggest challenger to Seaford for this year’s MPNFL Division One crown. After all the jostling for positions of the opening eight rounds, it took until round nine to finally give some clarity to what we can expect when top honours are handed out at the pointy end of the season. The Eagles were brilliant against Sorrento last week, inflicting the second loss in three matches to the previously undefeated Sharks. The Eagles drove back up the highway with not only the four points in the bag, but clearer in the knowledge that a remarkable fifthconsecutive premiership is well within reach. Emily Patterson, Nicole Taylor, Brianna Hollis and Caris MacInnes have driven the standards for the Eagles this year and know how to peak at precisely the right time of year. Seaford was also impressive against Mornington last week, with Kara Hargrave, Tayla Robertson, Rachel Cosans and Alesina Toleafoa continuing to play a huge and consistent role in an undefeated start to the season. The Eagles and Tigers are switched on, there’s no doubt about that, but today we find out if Sorrento can rebound and refocus after falling short in two of its last three matches. Sorrento’s challenger today is Frankston YCW. Much like Edi-Asp and Seaford, Sorrento has an extremely strong core group of players that have stood tall to win seven of their first nine matches. Shelley O’Donnell and Dominique Taylor have been outstanding, while Bec Kelly, Maddi Graham, Briana O’Hehir, Ashlea Gladman, Hannah Mundy, Kate Youlten and coach Alana Schaeche provide the overall depth to test any team in the competition. The Sharks have just one lingering question hanging over their heads – and that is can they turn around their fortunes when they next travel to meet both the Eagles and Tigers? The Stonekittens will challenge Sorrento today, with Tamara Bucca in good form while Lyshae Barry, Holly Booth, Brooke Cant, Stephanie Pahl, Ash Whitnell, Carly Withers, Steph Boulton and Elly McDonald have all made significant contributions in their four wins this season. But Sorrento returns to a stage of the draw where it won six consecutive games to begin its campaign, and will start that way again with a comfortable victory. A win has been a long-time coming for Mt Eliza but the Redlegs will be keen to bounce back to the winners list when they host Frankston Bombers today.

The Mounties started well, winning two of their first three games, but have now gone nearly two months without success. But that losing record hasn’t dampened their spirits with Carly Webster and her team showing some real fight against Frankston YCW last week. Emma Myatt led the positives with a terrific game in her first start up from B Grade, while Maddy McDonald and Carly and Ellie Russo made the Stonekittens work overtime for their victory. Players like Jamie O’Hare, Abbey Hutchinson, Bayley Wells and Kierra McKenzie have also shown some real fight at different stages this season. Bev Ashauer and her Bombers have struck it rich just once this year – against Bonbeach in round six – but have been super-competitive in a lot of games. Louise Brittain and Emma Mason have been very consistent this year while Blair Anderson, Jordyn Exner, Cath Porter, Jenn Simmons, Sarah Muston and Ashauer have pushed hard against some really tough opposition. These two are only eight-percentage points apart, and Frankston will jump above the Redlegs with victory – but it Mt Eliza to celebrate its first win since April 14. A split round 10 continues next Saturday with Edi-Asp hosting Bonbeach, Seaford rolling out the red carpet for Pines, while Mornington welcome Rosebud in a crucial game for both team’s finals aspirations.
Can the Stonekittens pull of an upset against Sorrento?

Netball Notes Division 1 Frankston Bombers
Mt Eliza
The sun was shining bright, We arrived at Rosebud in the speed of light, D grade came out roaring to go, Strong passes were high & low, Gee smashed it in D, She even got down on one knee, Han listened & played out of the ring, While Cheeks had on her famous grin, After a well fought match, We got the catch, A win so sweet, We thought we couldn’t be beat, C grade got told to be quiet, I thought they were going to start a riot, But instead they decided to play, And make Rosebud pay, Sezzy O worked harder than I’ve seen, I think its the most puffed she’s ever been, The defenders were oh so tight, Whilst Meg was oh so light, Goals were getting scored, Unlucky for us we were 2 short on the board, Bods was running a muck in B, And our new recruit what a sight to see, Cara was proving her worth, With Jade running all over Rosebuds turf, The ball moved up and down, We thought we had the crown, The whistle blew and a free shot for us, Stubbsy didn’t realize all the fuss, That a goal would mean a win, Unlucky for us, a miss and no grin, The cautions were getting rolled out, And I believe it was A grades shout, Bev was getting frisky, Whilst Jen had her eye on the post game whiskey, She was showing us how to move, And didn’t skip her groove, Em was sinking goals left right and center, Cath was in WD as an experimenter, The buds were just too tall, That we couldn’t reach the ball, They snuck away with the win, And we were left drinking gin. Go Bomber
We are officially half way through the season after playing YCW on Saturday. We walked away with wins in C & B grade in what was a super competitive day. D grade had a tough task ahead of them playing the top of the table stonecats, they were pushed to their absolute limits and went down by 20 goals in the end (45-25). Confidence & composure was hard to find but the girls still put in 100% effort. Kate T played really well and is improving tremendously this season. C grade knew it wouldn’t be an easy game & the scoreboard reflected this the whole match with it being goal for goal all day. Kelsey did an awesome job in defence while Evie did exactly as we asked her to do in WD, her pressure was relentless. Karen Russo’s accuracy was spot on in goals and really spurred the team on to get the 5 goal win (45-40), they have now played every team & remain undefeated. B grade went in super determined haven never beaten YCW. What an effort, every player played their role perfectly and the attack end as seamless this week. Charlie did great as did Jo and it was great to give Jordie a run up from C grade also. We won convincingly in the end 49-38. Although A grade have battled this season they played their best game this week, unfortunately this didn’t result in the win (49-42) but there were many positives. Emma came up from B grade and absolutely starred while Maddie, Ellie & Carly worked out the attacking end and were hitting the ring like pros. Next week bring on Frankston Bombers.

Half way there! Seems like only yesterday it was R1. We celebrated 100 sensational games by Sophie Phillips and Jen Watts. It was a great day to play with the sun shining who would think it was winter! We knew it was going to be a tough going up against four-time reigning premiers. A Grade down a few players rallied fast & hard in the first half with the score even at half-time. Edi-Asp are a great side & a well-oiled machine & they turned it on in the second half. Despite our strong defense, they took it away in the final quarter. We look forward to meeting them again with a full-strength team. Best on Bree, Bec & Ash B Grade were fired to give Jen & Sophie a great game & everyone gave it their all. After last week’s lackluster effort things were certainly different. Huge effort from all with defense going into overdrive to keep the difference to a few goals until the final quarter. Couldn’t get the win but an awesome game. Best on Jen, Gemma & Tayla. It was going to be tough hard games for both C & D. We have some new players & both team have had a bit of a shuffle. Once the new combinations settle & they get some training under their belt we know these teams will show us what they can do. It was a great effort by all players who never dropped their heads and played each game with Shark spirit. Last week the A grade girls headed into the game against Mt Eliza knowing we needed to get a win on board after a couple of close losses. Due to player availability we had to trail some new combos and it was great to see the versatility within the team. In our first quarter we capitalised and scored 8/9 however this intensity dropped off throughout the rest of the game. We lead by 9 heading into the 4th but lacked drive onto the ball but managed to hold on to a 7 point win. BOC goes to Tam for her defensive pressure. B grade had a mixed day of netball. We started strong with a 3 goal lead by applying lots of pressure and working the ball effectively in the attacking end, however we dropped off the intensity and were too slow to react and adjust to Mt Eliza’s change in game style. It was a very inconsistent game by everyone with players each firing and playing well at different times however in the end we couldn’t seem to all work together on the day and lost by 11 points. C grade also knew they would have a tough game on their hands and really concentrated on things we could control in the first half. At half time scores were level, however we started to tire and make a few costly mistakes resulting in a loss of 5 goals. BOC goes to Jaime for a killer game in WA. D grade had an awesome 20 goal win. The second half was played beautifully and we show our capability of controlling and having patience with one another. BOC goes to Nicky for running her guts out!

A Slice of MPNFL History By Doug Dyall At the end of every MPNFL season six awards are given out to those players that are judged by our umpire’s to be the best and fairest players in their respective divisions. The George Osborne (Seniors), Howard Armstrong (Reserves) and Bill Bosse Medals recognise the pinnacle of individual achievement in MPNFL Division Two – formerly Nepean. But many modern-day players will be unaware of who these awards are actually named after and the impact these people had on football right across the Peninsula. GEORGE OSBORNE George Osborne was a Dromana player from 1923 to 1930, playing around 65 games for the club before becoming involved in the running of the club at a young age. He became secretary of Dromana on four separate occasions from 1924 to ‘32, 1951‘52, 1962 to ‘65 and yet again from 1967 to 1969. He was treasurer between 1933 and 1937 and again in 1963. He made it the clean sweep when he became club president from 1948 to 1950. During his long career he was a club delegate to the MPFL and NFL for many seasons, becoming vice-president of the MPFL for three seasons from 1947. He was awarded a Life Membership of the MPFL in 1935. He owns one remarkable piece of history as the only person to be awarded a Life Membership in two leagues, gaining the Nepean League honour in 1968. George Osborne was again honoured in 1974 with the VCFL Medal for services to football for over 50 years. The Nepean Football League made the appropriate decision in 1974 to honour him with the best and fairest award for the senior grade of football, an honour which still stand today.
32
HOWARD ARMSTRONG Howard Armstrong was a Somerville administrator of the highest order. Even though he never played football he got involved as a trainer at his club for many years before proceeding his way to committee duties. He became president of Somerville in 1960, a role he filled until 1971 before taking the position on again in 1984. Howard again served as a delegate for Somerville to the NFL for many years and became that leagues’ vicepresident in 1972 before becoming president for two years in 1974-‘75. Howard was made Life Member of the NFL in 1978 and awarded the VCFL Medal in 1977 for his services to football. In 1984 the Nepean Football League named the reserves best and fairest award in his honour. BILL BOSSE Bill Bosse was a Langwarrin administrator who was president between 1958 and 1962. He became involved in the NFL where he served on the executive from 1960 to 1968, becoming president in 1962 for three years. Bill was made a Life Member of the NFL in 1968. In 1984 the Nepean Football League named the thirds best and fairest award in his honour, a gesture that remains in place until this very day. We will take a look at the names behind the MPNFL Division One (Peninsula League) medals in the coming weeks.

A great way to celebrate a great cause Karingal coach Brett Dunne and representatives of AFL South East partners Mornington Racing Club and Sport and Life Training (SALT) were invited to a special event held at the Melbourne Cricket Ground recently. More than 400 guests attended Sports Chaplaincy Australia’s (SCA) 2018 Champions Dinner, where newly-appointed Australian cricket coach Justin Langer was the key-note speaker. Langer is personally invested in the SCA program and is a keen advocate of its importance to local sporting organisations. Karingal Football Netball Club suffered its own tragic circumstances during the off-season with the passing of much-loved footballer Luke Duhig. Dunne said the club appreciated having the SCA service available to its members to help them through difficult times. “It was absolutely devastating what happened to Luke and to have that service available, whether people wanted to use it or not, was comforting,” Dunne said. “SCA do such great work through the community and it was a pleasure to attend the dinner.” Dunne said listening to Langer speak was a genuine thrill. “It was one of the most captivating speeches I have ever heard,” he said. “He had a 400-plus crowd hanging off every word and it was easy to see why he his such a respected figure in Australian sport.”
Sports Chaplaincy Australia’s charter is to enrich the lives of all people involved in sport throughout Australia and giving them help in times of need. They achieve this by training dedicated men and women to provide pastoral care to high performance and local sports communities. SCA’s point of difference in sports is that it provides an excellent level of pastoral care, which includes practical care, spiritual care and mental health care. All of its chaplains are trusted volunteers and serve free of charge to their clubs or sports. Dunne and SCA AFL South East liaison Bibe Brown spoke with Langer about SCA’s involvement in sport and took the above picture as a memento.

Footy Preview - Division 2 What a cracking round of football! By David Nagel Now this is what footy is all about – 12 teams heading into an exciting Queen’s Birthday weekend of football full of genuine optimism that this could be their day! The future of MPNFL football may be staring us in the face this weekend with the top-eight teams taking on the challenge of each other, while Crib Point and Pearcedale, and Tyabb and Devon Meadows will match motors in a brace of matches that will be driving some real enthusiasm at training this past week. If there is to be three divisions in the MPNFL in the future – a likely outcome – then this is what the future might look like. It really is a cracking round of football – and it lasts for two days! Let’s start with the four games on Saturday, down at RJ Rowley Reserve in Rye to be precise, where the Demons host Chelsea in a game that is harder to pick than Barnaby Joyce’s next movement. Seriously – what’s going on there? The Demons last three games have been absolute crackers with a two-point win over Red Hill followed by a six-point loss to Hastings and a heartbreaking defeat at the hands of Somerville, by the same margin, at this very venue last week. With an ounce of luck the Demons could be sitting pretty in the top four – with six wins – the same as the Seagulls heading into this week’s game. But the Demons only have themselves to blame for last week’s loss to the Eagles. Matt Hill kicked the opening goal of the final quarter to extend a 14-point lead, before Josh Gana made it 28 points the difference – at the nine-minute mark – to effectively book the Demons their fifth win for the season. But the Demons fell asleep, with some celebratory hugs in the middle of the ground - as Gana seemed to put the issue beyond doubt – proving a bit premature in the end.
They conceded goals at the 11, 13, 14 and 28-minute marks, allowing Tim McGenniss far too much latitude off half back as he drifted forward to kick the match-winner a minute later. McGenniss was the difference in the end, kicking two in the final quarter. Tom Baker gave everything he had for the Demons in the ruck, while Matt McIndoe and Campbell Robbins will take some good form into this week’s contest. Chelsea simply did what it had to do last week, to get back on the winners list against Crib Point after a shockloss to Langwarrin a week earlier. The Gulls looked brilliant in a seven-goal second quarter, with Jack Francis presenting well up forward and Luke Shannon and Todd Gardiner having plenty of the pill through the midfield. Brad Clark was also effective off half back while Matt Ponton kicked two goals in a beston-ground display. This one should be a belter, but we’ll go for Rye to turn its fortunes around in another heartstopper, this time by two points.
Tyabb will look to bounce back strongly against Devon Meadows today.

Footy Preview - Division 2 Hastings host Langwarrin in what’s shapes as another classic contest at Thomas Barclay Oval. It’s been a case of what you see is what you get with the Blues this year, losing to the only three teams above them, struggling to shake off the teams around them, and producing their biggest wins against the lower tier. Pretty much par for the course so far! James Marasco has been playing some good footy in the ruck, while Matt Clifford is one of the toughest midfield matchups in the competition. A balance of height and class is bringing many an opposition undone and he will need to watched closely by the Kangaroos this afternoon. Paul Rogasch and Luke Hewitt are proving a dangerous combination up front while defender Tom Redmond could be the man to stand Jesse Murphy after a great duel with Michael Theodoridis last week. Langy, well it is certainly on the improve. It has emerged from one of the toughest fortnights in football with its reputation enhanced – no mean feat – after a win over Chelsea and a dogged performance against runaway leader Dromana last week. The Kangas had the better of the Tigers during the second term, but kicked 3.8 to 3.1 to waste their opportunity to apply some genuine scoreboard pressure. Mitch Cuthbert and Gerard Brown were handy in the ruck, while Mick Parker produced a tough and strong
performance through the midfield. Throw in the form of Shane Paterson and Nick Hammill and the Kangas are on the right track. Here’s another tough one to tip – we’ll go for the Blues to win at home by 11 points. Tyabb will play its second home game on the trot, and be aiming for its second win of the season, when it welcomes Devon Meadows to Bunguyan Reserve. The Yabbies, as they have done for much of the season, toughed it out against Karingal last week when a lastquarter blowout looked likely. After a poor third term they slipped 37 points adrift but cut the margin back to five goals at the final siren. The Yabbies also matched the Bulls when the game was on the line in the first half so will take plenty of confidence heading in. Club stalwart Matt Dimkos kicked five, Tom Booth was more than serviceable in the ruck, while Aaron Turner and Brad Doyle continued their great work through the midfield. Devon Meadows has now lost five consecutive games and will be desperate to turn its fortunes around. The Panthers were pretty good in the first half against Hastings last week but struggled to find a reliable avenue to goal after half time.
www.aflsoutheast.com.au
41
Footy Preview - Division 2 The Cranbourne-connection of Michael Theodoridis and Mat Fletcher chimed in with six of their team’s nine goals, while Josh Stewart, Gav Kerr and Ash Adams were solid performers for four quarters. The Panthers slipped up on a similar quest against Crib Point a fortnight back and have hopefully learned some tough lessons. A four-quarter performance will get them across the line here – but that level of performance hasn’t been forthcoming in recent times. They’ll sneak home by 11 points. Crib Point and Pearcedale will be pretty keen to turn the page on two horror stories from last weekend when the Magpies and Panthers collide at Cribby. The Magpies were blown away by a rampant first-half performance by Chelsea last week, while the Dales gave their home crowd nothing in a very disappointing 105-point loss to Red Hill. Zak Dekleuver tried hard in the ruck for the Magpies, and will have a huge task today in trying to stop one of the best big-men in the business in Harry Prior. Aaron King, Tim Cook and Luke Herrington will also bring some good form and hope to the Magpies cause, while Dave Cook and Myles Jamieson will need to be on their games through the midfield. But Prior’s dominance, which should feed the likes of Luke Dalmau, Zach Campbell, Trav Bravo and Troy Jacobson – should see the Panthers home in a close one. SUNDAY
42
Ladder positions wouldn’t suggest so but you just get the feeling we’re in for something pretty special when Red Hill rolls out the welcome mat for Dromana at the Showgrounds on Sunday. These two have been great rivals for years, their close proximity engendering some spirited and memorable contests – and this one should be no exception. The Tigers are the clear trend-setters this year but had one of their toughest outings of the season against Langwarrin last week. The Tigers eventually prevailed by 16 points after an unusually low output on the scoreboard. The Tigers are attacking beasts, scoring 152 points more than their nearest competitors – Chelsea and Somerville (694) – and sit second on the list of best defensive teams. But guess who is first…yes…Red Hill. The Hillmen have conceded just 400 points for the season, 92 less than the Tigers. This clash is shaping as the irresistible force meeting the immovable object! Majok Puok and Rory Gregg are proving a strong ruck combination for the Tigers, while Andy Howison and Jack Gipp are playing their roles in a dominant midfield brigade. And Rikki Johnston, Billy Quigley and Will Gregson are making life difficult for opposition forwards. Red Hill was brilliant against Pearcedale last week, with Jake Mold, Dylan Hoare, Sean Marchetti and Marc De Lago warming up for this week’s clash with fine performances in the engine room.
www.aflsoutheast.com.au
Footy Preview - Division 2 As mentioned earlier, this one could be a little trickier than first imagined for the Tigers. But they’ll find a way to win – this time by 17 points. And a fantastic round of football comes to a thrilling conclusion when Karingal host Somerville at Ballam Park. The Bulls did what they had to do against Tyabb last week while the Eagles produced a barnstorming finish to get over the top of Rye. The cream of the crop came to the fore for the Eagles in the last quarter, with Justin Allsop, Billy Rolfe, Nathan Gillis and an inspired Tim McGenniss leading their team to an epic victory. The last quarter of McGenniss had to be seen to be believed, dominating the fat-side of the contest on the outer wing at RJ Rowley Reserve. Ben Sedgwick filled in for the injured Tom Roberts, while Luke Burton and Jed Sutton did some little but important things at crucial times for the Eagles. Karingal’s big-man department led the way against Tyabb last week with Grant Goodall and Justin Farrelly giving no rest in intensity to the opposition talls. Players like David Hirst, Andy McInnes and Andy Mathers are benefitting greatly from the terrific work of their ruck stocks, while Dylan Gregson, Jordy Jones and Steve Tapolczay worked as a tight unit in defence. This could go down to the wire – but the Bulls will make it eight wins from nine starts with a 19-point victory.

Footy Notes Tyabb Our U/19’s boys came up against a very strong bulls outfit on the rebound after dropping their first game the week before. Our guys started well but as the game progressed momentum swung the bulls way & they ran out comfortable winners. Now that one is behind us we look forward to Devon this week where we will have to be at our best to record our first ‘W’. An improved performance from our reserves last week going down against a very strong Karingal side. If we take that attack on the ball & the contest into the upcoming games we will certainly give ourselves the best shot at success. Better players A. McGough, T. Jarvis, H. Jones, T. Oostveen & T. Elliott. Another brilliant day for footy on the peninsula last week and our Yabs had their work cut out for them hosting the in form Karingal Bulls. It was a real arm wrestle in the 1st half with a lot of footy being played between the arcs. HANDSOME RANSOM was doing his thing as per usual and the SKIP and BROTHER OF SKIP (simmo) were digging in also. The pond people came out after halftime and were caught napping- allowing Karingal to bang on 4 goals to 1 point. Last quarter saw some great passages of play from both sides but unfortunately for the Yabs the lead was too big, eventually going down by 31 points. Our dynamic duo KOSS and ANDO kicked the teams score (5 goals & 2 goals) and AZ TURNER was sensational from go to whoa. Reboot, recharge and look forward to another home game this week against DEVON MEADOWS

Hastings Well history was made on Saturday with all our Football teams winning on the day for the first time. The mens football teams recorded three good wins over Devon Meadows, while the Womens team recorded a great win over Seaford, well done to all involved. The under 19’s got the day off to a great start with a strong win over the Devon side, it was good to see a couple of new faces in the team, and with a couple of 3rds boys playing in the Seniors the future of the Club looks bright. The Reserves had a great win over Devon and just have to keep performing, with the top 5 sides all on the same points and the next 3 teams just 1 win behind it is a very tight comp in the Reserves, but if our boys keep performing the way they are, the ladder will take care of itself.

The Senior game was also a good win, it always seems a battle when we play at Devon and for 2 1/2 quarters Saturday was no different with the game very close, but the last 35 minutes of the game saw Hastings run out 8 goal winners, unfortunately Shaun Foster suffered a serious rib injury and will miss a few weeks, but we wish Shaun a speedy recovery. Langwarrin this week the team that we swapped places with in 2008, should be an interesting game. Chelsea After a fairly rough start to the day last week we managed to get two good wins on the board later in the day. The under’s struggled against a very good Cribby unit. Has been a tuff few weeks boy’s but we need to stick together and get behind Dan. Some sole searching after the game so let’s turn it around sooner than later. The 2’s have got some good players back and are really hitting the scoreboard, let’s keep it happening. Andy Silva 10 Majors, Wow and had great support from Cranner’s and Luke Clark. Mitch Kosh and Peeley also stepped up, just an even spread right through the side which is what we are looking for. In the main game after a sluggish start we really got going with Pont’s , Toddy and Zane Carter getting busy all around the ground. Jack and Curtis again converting up forward and no doubt we just all need to keep buying in and the results will come. Luke Shannon had a tuff start to the day and fought back really well. Brad, great game and a super goal to top off your 100th in grand style. Two huge games coming up so please folks keep turning up as it as been a while so let’s all enjoy it together. Big day at Rye this week so Peninsula link here we come. On a sad note, A big hug to Lauchie Simpson who lost his Dad last week, we are all with you Champ !! Sponsor of the week DRD Concrete. Huge thanks to Bob, Marty and the Team !! Please keep supporting our Functions.

Footy Notes Rye Queens Birthday Football at Rye and a big game it is today against Chelsea, not only after losing our last 2 games by a 1 goal in each game and needing to get back on the winners list, but also winning back the OBrien Real Estate Cup. Today we play for the OBrien Real Estate Cup, in both grades and would like to thank Anastasia and Matthew from the Rye office on their valued sponsorship of the Rye FNC. Under 19’s last week were sensational and are now starting to hit their straps. Great to have Joel Wills back and great games by Jacko Allen, Zac Jennings, Billy Swayn, Goldy, Barnsey and “Pringles” Mielle. It’s your chance in the next few weeks to string some strong wins together and cement your spot in the top 5. The reserves played a better brand of footy last week, but still came up short and lost to a pretty slick Somerville side. Sterlo, Schwindy, and Wheels all battled hard, with Hagan Rice, Matt James and Coops rounding out the best players. Seniors lost a game they should have won, getting to 4 goals up in the last quarter, only to make a few poor decisions in the last 10 minutes to be overrun by a desperate Somerville. We need to learn from it boys and when we are in the same position again we don’t make the same mistakes. Best were, Matt McIndoe our U/19 boys Campbell Robbins and Nick Rowson, then Tom Baker, Lloydy and Dicko. Crib Point A trip to Chelsea last weekend left the club with mixed football results. The U19’s began the day on top of the Gulls and finished accordingly with a 100-point win. Regular goal kicking forward Mac Pittock hit the scoreboard with three majors whilst Black Betty’s very own Jonah Bam Ba-lam put on a dominant display of football. After a quick fire start to the game the reserves failed to deliver on early promising signs. Three late goals in as many minutes in the second quarter provided some hope for the side entering half time with the belief that they could match it with the Gulls. Unfortunately, the belief was soon lost with a deplorable third term seeing Chelsea blow the 31-point margin at half time out to 72 points to close the third. In the end our boys went down by 94 points. Daniel Briggs was tough all day in the middle whilst the human Frankfurt Gordon Frankel showed he’s still got it.
The script for the pies reserve side was not too dissimilar from that of the senior side this week unfortunately. Coming off an impressive win, the pies reverted to many of their old ways in what was a disappointing display against Chelsea. An 83-point loss in the end for our boys. Positives to come out of the game were bleak but the effort of Aaron King up forward landed him best on ground for Crib Point. This week poses to be a ripper round for the club when they come up against long standing rival Pearcedale at the home of the magpies. Get around them!
Pearcedale The results were disappointing across the board last week in the male football department. The scores tell quite the story. Injuries are plaguing us but boys, it all starts on the training track and with a desire and a belief. If we start there and take that out onto the ground then we will get the results we want and need! All teams were home last week and in glorious conditions on the George Wisken oval, the women’s team took on Pakenham and won by a landslide. They train hard and their team spirit is really shining through. Congratulations to them. Off field, thanks to the boys who are stepping up and contributing around the club. From canteen duty, setting up and packing up it is greatly appreciated. Let’s work together. Tickets to Drew Petrie luncheon, June 30 are selling fast. Get your tickets from Mandy (0478141271) to secure your seat. Don’t forget Marty Fields and Neil Custerson will be there for your entertainment with a delicious meal and beer, wine and soft drink. This will be a massive day for the club. We will need lots of helpers on the day. If you have some time, let a committee member know and we will add you to the roster. The annual ball at Settler’s Run is ‘Christmas in July’ on July 7 after the Karingal game. Tickets are available now. See Karen, Mandy or Sharon for these. Will be a fabulous night. Don’t miss out. We head to Crib Point this week. Let’s show them the Pearcedale passion and pride and get some wins on the board! #upthedales

Footy Notes Red Hill
I have one word..winner winner, well that is two words and we really need 1 more..winner. 3 wins is a good day. We welcome Dromana up to the Hill. Today is a great day for two great clubs, this IS local rivalry and a real test for all teams. The ones play for the “Bluey” Holmes Shield. The clubs have played each other 90 times with Dromana ahead 50/40. The first game for competitive points occurred on July 9 1930 and the Hillmen took the chocolates by 5 points. Hopefully history repeats today and the Hillmen put an end to Dromana”s winning streak. Our goal kickers are producing more goods than an Owy Shaw chicken shed. Sean “Big M” Marchetti, Johnno” Stickman”Ross kicked 4 each and Billy Hughes backed up with a couple.Jake Mitchell and Danny Allsop suffered from leather poisoning by the end of the game. The Magoos were back on the winners list. Torren “TP” Powell was everywhere. He shared the spoils with the Colonel Sanders who was kicking goals and running the opposition raggered. Billy Tuck got more kicks than the Karate Kid. The young ones are performing beautifully. It was great to see all the boys get around young Brian “Bird dog” Delaney when he snagged his first major. Logan “the Sandman” Sandford kicked 4,the Boss Boase snagged 3. JJ Johnson was a force for the day and the Hyphen Lee-Conway continues to dominate. The Presidents lunch celebrates the history of Red Hill and Dromana. Make sure you get into the rooms at the end of the day...tomorrow is a sleep in.
Dromana Queens Birthday Sunday and our Annual match against Red Hill for the Bluey Holmes Shield. This weeks game is sponsored by Dromana Foodworks. Remember next Saturday 16th June sees the club holding its MND luncheon with guest speaker Terry Daniher. Cost is $50 and bookings to Chris on 0414428153. Last week saw us take on Langwarrin with the Reserves and U19 attempting to keep their winning run going so they could get into the 5 and take part in the finals. However things did not start off well with our U19s outclassed by a more mature and experienced Langwarrin and apart from the second quarter were outscored all day going down by 54 points. The reserves though out scored in the second half had set up their winning margin early in the game to run out 26 point winners and are only out of the five on percentage. Eight wins in a row for the Seniors and although not playing great football they did enough to win by 16 points with our usual accuracy in front of goals deserting us but I am sure the coaching panel will be pleased that we still have the ability to win ugly when required.

It was a big week for the seniors with a gutsy come from behind win on the road against Rye. After going to sleep in the third, we found ourselves 3 goals down at 3/4 time. It wasn’t looking good when Rye kicked the first 2 goals of the last to push the margin out to 28 points. Credit to our boys for putting their foot down and playing some superb football in that last 20 minutes to win by a goal. McGennis and Gillis were elite in the last with 2 goals each. Rolfe, Sedgy and Barbs were also among the best.
www.aflsoutheast.com.au
Footy Notes The reserves had another win and remain on top of the ladder with only percentage the difference between the top 4. It will be a tough contest this week coming up against Karingal who sit second. Barnes, Beckett, Stapleton and Young continued their good form. The 19s aren’t likely to want to remember this game, remaining goal less for the first half. They went down in a very low scoring affair and will look to make a mends this week away at Karingal. This Sunday we take on Karingal who have a few ex-somie boys in their line up. Having never played against them before its likely to be an interesting day. Upcoming functions: 16th June - “Around the World” function to celebrate Sedgy’s 200 game milestone. We encourage past and present players, family and friends, to come along and join in the celebrations. Pack your bags. 30th June - SFNC mid season Ball, tickets available at the club. Don’t miss out.
Langwarrin In what was a new venue for many of us we set our GPS’s for Dromana Recreation. Wth Arthur’s Seat as a backdrop, we were keen to do well. Again mixed results were the order of the day in the early games. A thumping win in the Under 19’s with best players J. Mack, B. Mate, B. Scoble ( 5 Goals ) J. Mathie and Bailey Smith. The reserves, went down, but were good at times. Good players included S. Urbans, J. Longley, A. Eggleston, M. Peynenborg and S. Tanirau . Coming off a great win last week the seniors were up and about early and were highly competitive against the league leaders. Our intensity and willingness to move the ball quickly was solid throughout the day. With cleaner disposal and more accurate kicking on goal we could well have turned a 16 point loss into another good win. Particularly encouraging was the fact that we ouscored Dromana in two of the four quarters. Jett, Boof , Sean , Siz and Parker all played well. Blanket was good in the ruck and Hammill was tireless. Getting close to the league leader whilst good, should spread the belief amongst our group that we can take on anyone and match it with them consistently. Today will be another good test as we take on Hastings. Let’s hope that we get the three wins. Social Notes : Our $10k draw should be a great event.
With music and a happy hour the clubrooms at Langy will be lots of fun and maybe even highly profitable to one lucky winner. Make sure you get yourself a ticket or 2! Go Langy !!
Devon Meadows Happy Queens Birthday Weekend! And where would we rather be than right here at the home of the Yabbies? You’ll notice there is no netball today, as the girls made an agreement to play their matches on Thursday instead. Put that together with the fact that it’s a long weekend and i’m sure we should be set for a bumper crowd of at least 15-20 spectators. Still going to be a great day for footy, and the true believers will be out in force don’t you worry about that! At least there should be no worries getting a park or lining up for a pie or a beer. We owe the Yabbies some revenge as they got one over us last year on our home paddock. Looking forward to seeing the response today. SOCIAL - Some big functions are fast approaching so make sure you get on board, lock them in your diary and snap up your tickets. First and foremost is the Annual Ball - Next Weekend June 16th after the Rye home game. Trios Sports Club. Tickets $60 including 2 course meal and entertainment. Drinks at bar prices. See Em Van Rooye & Nat Fallon to buy a ticket or a table. Get your tickets ASAP, only 100 tickets available and this event will sell out. Comedy Night - 7th July - Always a great night and a sellout every year for good reason. Organise your table or just purchase individual tickets. $30 single, $50 double or $250 table of 10. Also remember why cook on a Thursday? We have a large range of delicious home cooked meals every Thursday for $15, with the bar open until late. GO MEADOWS!

Netball Preview Are the Bullettes ready to fire? By David Nagel Karingal has a real fight on its hands to hold onto a topfour position but can basically eliminate one of its biggest challengers if the Bullettes can roll Somerville at Karingal today. Jess Whitfort has had to rotate a stack of players through her team this year, with 23 at last count making their way onto the A Grade team sheet. The Bullettes once again had a plethora of talent sitting on the sidelines against Tyabb last week, relying on a strong core of B Grade talent to give the Yabbies a run for their money. Mel Cotta was superb for the Bullettes against the Yabbies, and would love to see the return of some familiar faces to take on the challenge of Somerville. The Eagles have had their fair share of injuries this year and would have enjoyed the week off, resting their aching legs last week with no game to play against Rye. Jaimee Peney has been keeping things together at the defensive end of the court, while Elyse Hower, Briony Kelly, Dani Planner, Sara Tanner and Maddi Peney have been giving their skipper some solid support. This is a huge game for both teams, the Bullettes keen to cement themselves in the top-four while the Eagles need to start to winning if they’re to replicate their finals experience from last year. This will be close but the Bullettes will get the choccies. Devon Meadows pulled a rabbit out of the hat against Hastings last week and will be looking for its second big scalp in seven days when it travels to Tyabb to take on the Yabbies. The Panthers were huge underdogs against the Blues, who hadn’t lost a game since round two to be one of the in-form teams in the competition. But the Panthers never took a backward step, repelling some dangerous opposition to bank their best win for the season. It was great reward for some players that have really stuck to their guns, with Emily Van Rooye, Jenelle Bain, Luck Hoogenboom, Nat Fallon, Shannon Gill and Bryoni Hardeman all sticking together through the good times and the bad. The Yabbies need a strong performance here. Not just to keep arch-rivals Crib Point away from second place on the ladder, but to take some confidence into next week’s huge showdown against Langwarrin. Birgitta Nemaric, Dani Slaughter, Caitlin Watson, Keira Wills and Kellie Anderson have done some great things for the Yabbies this year and won’t want their good work to go to waste against the Panthers. The Yabbies will warm up for next week’s showdown with a comfortable victory in the end. Dromana still harbours hopes of playing finals this year and can keep its dream alive with a win over Red Hill today at the Showgrounds.

The Tigers had a walkover against Pearcedale in round seven, but that was the tasty meat in the sandwich with losses to Hastings (Round 6) and Langwarrin last week a truer indication of its form. Emily Pratt, Bev Miller, Emily La Roche and Ruby Wilson have been consistent contributors for the Tigers, while Chloe Birch and Emily Wilson have also had their moments in the sun. Red Hill will be super-fresh for this one, having played just one game in the last four weeks. They played Devon Meadows in round five, then had the bye against Rye before the interleague weekend came around. They then lowered their colours to Karingal before Pearcedale forfeited last week’s schedule contest. Fresh legs could be a real bonus for players like Georgia Vines, Isabella Cuming and Kate Patterson – but Dromana will be a little too strong in the end. Undefeated ladder-leaders Langwarrin will need to be right at the top of its game when the Kangaroos make the tricky-trip south to take on Hastings at Marine Parade. Sara Drain and her girls are in rare form at the moment, scoring 69 goals against Dromana last week to equal their top score for the season. The Kangas are so strong all over the court with Emily Zeuschner, Sarah Anderson, Amy Slefendorfas and Jayde Aron having ripping seasons to date. Hastings will be keen to rebound after last week’s surprise loss to Devon Meadows. Armani Buskermolen and Nicole Ram are two players who will be hell-bent on having an impact and dragging the Blues across the line. But the Kangas will be too strong and win comfortably. Crib Point is due to play Pearcedale, who have forfeited the last two weeks, while Chelsea has the bye against Rye.
Karingal and Tyabb will be reaching for the stars today against tough opposition.

Netball Notes Karingal
A big thanks to Tyabb for hosting our U17’s game against Crib Point last week! Well done to our girls on a fantastic win!! Great teamwork on Saturday girls. Everyone played their part on court which reflected in the final score. 38-8, BOC Dakota Watson D grade got things going with a strong start from the girls especially in the goal circle with the skilled rotation of Izzy and Briohny opening up space and scoring a whopping 40-15! BOC Briohny Greenough C grade girls also had a strong start much to the amazing work rate of their defensive end. Long serving player Sara Burke combined seamlessly with newbie Tayla Crabtree to be able to turn the ball and provide our attack end with lots of opportunity. C grade won 36-13 BOC Sara Burke B grade continued their dominance, facing 5th places Tyabb who looked hungry for a win. But the combinations of our B girls were too strong, leading at every turn and through the amazing work of our defence end Grace Van Dort and Breanna Neighbour kept the Tyabb girls supply low, giving us the win 47-28. BOC Grace Van Dort A severely undermanned side with 7 players missing meant the A grade girls had a tough job but were supported well by some of our amazing B girls who took on a slick and experienced yabbies. While the Yabbies took the win, there were some brilliant passages from the girls who were relentless in their defence and created some wonderful opportunities for the goal end. BOC Mel Cotta
B grade knew they had a tough game on their hands. Coming up against a tough side Demons knew they had to focus on their game. Credit to Somerville on a very good win. Best on: Rach Next up we welcome Chelsea to Rye.
Tyabb Another beautiful day for some netty! Congrats to D grade captain, Meegs, who celebrated her 50th match last weekend. The squad did their best to get the win for her but Karingal’s whole court defensive pressure proved too difficult to crack. BOC- Bella who worked tirelessly to get herself back into the contest after a slow start. This week C grade came up against arguably the strongest side in the competition. Despite this, the girls played Tyabb brand netball & did not give up all game. Dana and Nat worked double time in attack to set up opportunities for our goalers, & our defensive pressure across the court was great to watch. Plenty to work on for the weeks to come to reach our goal of playing finals netball. B grade had a huge fight on their hands from the very first whistle on Saturday. We were under immense pressure from Karingal & we couldn’t keep composed at the times needed. We were able to put enough pressure on Karingal when they were in attack, turning over plenty of ball, but we struggled to convert the turnovers & the score line continued to push out. Time to make amends against Devon this week. A grade were able to be on their game early, getting a good jump against Karingal in the first quarter. We certainly didn’t pull together 4 good quarters, with plenty of messy play intertwined with some good passages making for a scrappy game at times. We are continuing to build new combinations across the court which will continue to grow over the coming weeks.
Chelsea Rye D Grade had a strong start with everyone playing some great Netball. Demons had a great lineup with 10 players being on the bench. This meant they were very versatile. Somerville lifted in the last term and took the lead. Best on: Bianca C grade had a great start to the day. With a very tight match all day. Somerville applied some great pressure all game but Demons held their feet and kept the lead. C grade will look to maintain their wins in the next few weeks. Best on: Kristy

Chelsea C girls came out firing this week going into the quarter break with a nice lead. We were able to keep up the intensity for all four quarters knocking off the previously undefeated Crib Point. Ally and Adelle were huge in defence, whilst Georgia had an outstanding game as our shooter with a massive 29 goals. Wonderful game girls! After a disappointing loss last week the D girls came out hard to claim another win. All the girls did exactly what was asked of them, opening up the court and making strong leads. A big shout out to Tammie who was best on and did an amazing job running in centre. The girls should be extremely proud of their efforts this week and be ready to back it up next week against Rye. Chelsea B Grade had a tough start but showed great resilience and fought back in the second. Defence was strong all game and the old girls dominated. Jayde worked hard in defence and earnt best on this week.

Netball Notes Our A Grade got off to a rocky start as well with Verona forgetting her shoes. Since you can’t wear ugg boots on court, the head coach went shoeless. Verona’s luck turned and she earnt best on again this week! The As showed a fearless fight against Crib Point. Great efforts by all! We finished off a great day across the road at the Club Grounds, grabbed a burger from our Doyles BBQ, and watched the Seniors take a win over Crib Point.
Crib Point Last round we played another unknown quantity and were met with a strong well-rehearsed club who were up to the challenge. We came away with 2 wins and 2 losses and look forward to a second opportunity to play them again. U/17 our girls played Karingal and had a great first half, they just keep on improving. BOC was Haylee for her amazing center court defense. D Grade had a tough day going down by 8pts. The girls had a slow start and were unable to chase down the difference. BOC went to newcomer Mikaela for her stellar performance. C Grade suffered their first loss of the season to a strong side in Chelsea. Silly mistakes and a slow start cost the girls in the first quarter; Chelsea getting the jump on them early. The girls were unable to make up the difference in the end. BOC went to Fi who provided drives onto the ring, and a special mention to Alex who made a huge impact. B Grade put the foot down right from the first whistle having a huge first quarter. Our goalers made the most of their opportunities and the defensive pressure down the court enable easy turnovers for our defenders. Back to back wins for our B Grade team winning by 16pts. A Grade started with some new combinations this week with a few girls unavailable due to VNL commitments. Our girls shone and adapted to the changes coming away with a 13pt victory. Last week netballer Jess Cook and husband James welcomed a baby girl, congratulations to the Cook clan. Today we play Pearcedale, so let’s take away 5 wins!
Langwarrin Round 8 saw Dromana welcome us to their territory. We expected a tough day at the office and it didn’t disappoint! Under 17’s kicked off the day, these young roo girls work extremely hard week in and week out and it’s really starting to show on the court. Dromana youngsters were too strong for us, but plenty of positives came out of the match.
D grade began the match in a blistering fashion, storming to a 10 goal lead by half time, but then something went wrong, we lost our captain to a knee injury, there were a few controversial decisions and Dromana ran with momentum and stole the win by one goal. A very frustrating game! C girls took the court for a bruising encounter. Tight defence contained the well drilled Dromana goalers but not enough to come away with the four points, we eventually went down by 9 in what was the toughest most physical match of the day. Our B girls are travelling perfectly, coming away with another solid win and working so well together on the court. These girls have their eyes on the prize and are working extremely hard to get it. A grade we’re without their player coach Sara but that didn’t affect this team of superstars. Relishing the fact we were playing indoors, these girls played strong and precise netball and won the match by 20 goals, a superb effort. Roos girls take on Hastings this weekend and we are hungry to get 5 wins across the board! Go Roos!
Dromana We knew last week was going to be a hard week up against a strong Langwarrin but our girls came to play and it showed. U17’s went out hard and played extremely well going into the first break up by 15 they kept the momentum going and came away with a 33 pt win. Best on went to Tahlia D Grade had a not so great start and at half time were down by 10. Our defence in the 2nd half was on fire and the last quarter was thrilling to watch the intensity lifted with every intercept and with every rebound we made the most of it and converted. In the last 20 seconds we scored to win by 1 point. Best on went to Georgia. C Grade was a pretty even game throughout and the team came away with another win.Best on went to Eliza. B Grade was a tough hard fought match we were in it but in the end Langy came out on top, Best on went to Laura. A Grade was always going to be a tough match with players out but credit to all our girls they kept fighting at one stage it was only a 11 pt margin but in the end Langy took the points, Best on to Ruby. Congratulations Hylay Pollard on joining the !00 games played club you are an amizing person and have been a pivital part of the club on and off the groundfor a long time. H to look back at last year when you couldn’t walk or talk to today your determination and hard work has payed off and got you back on the court. Not only a great netballer but mother and friend aswell. We are up the Hill this week good luck to all teams. Go Tigers

Netball Notes Red Hill What an outstanding effort from every U/17 that took the court on Saturday. Playing such an intense game with enthusiasm, team work and determination. We came out strong taking the lead in the first quarter while maintaining our stamina through to the 2nd quarter. Goalers working hard with outstanding accuracy , the mid court working well feeding into the ring. Our defence was strong and clean, with Zoe stepping up, playing a consistent strong game in defence. Falling behind by 8 points in the third quarter we came out firing for the last quarter showcasing the skills they have to come back and finish the game a draw. Amazing work girls.Keep it up! D grade was without a win again but a lot of team goals were fulfilled. The girls are really developing. The second half of the match saw the team shutting down the attacking end and winning the last quarter in terms of goals shot ,proving they are a very competitive side. Great job to Saskia in defence and Jess through the centre. In a match with many twists and turns our C grade girls played a four solid quarters across the court! An enjoyable match from our Pearcedale competitors! Nice to bring it home by a goal. A very messy & inconsistent game for B grade on the weekend! Luckily the girls came through with a win, after playing no where near close enough to their full potential. Working hard at training this week to up the intensity and fix the errors to come out firing against a strong team Dromana this weekend!
A Grade - A Grade were lucky enough to have a rest this week, and are ready and raring to match up against Karingal for the first time this Sunday. This week we come up against Karingal for the first time on Sunday. The girls are excited to see what competition the bulls put up today, and will make sure they come out guns blazing reading for a great game. Mid Season Ball - 30th of June. Get your tickets off Amy.
Devon Meadows We look forward to today’s trip to Tyabb to take on one of the better teams in the competition and there should be some very close games down through the grades. We had some great battles with Hastings last week and while every game our girls play is a highlight, we must make special mention of the wonderful effort of our A grade girls to get the job done against the Blues. Hastings was missing some of their real drive players through the midcourt, but the efforts of Shannon, Jenelle, Emily, Bryoni, Natalie, Alana, Lucy and Kate made everyone at Devon Meadows very proud. Congratulations to the C and D Grade girls for their win and also to the B and 17-Under teams who fought their games out right until the very end. We look forward to another great day of competition against the Yabbies today.
Somerville Round 8 saw us come up against Rye. The morning was cold but the sun was high and shining for the games. D Grade - The D Grade girls had a ripper start to the game with every player registering stats in tips & intercepts. They remain undefeated and hope to continue this winning streak against Karingal this week. C Grade - We were down by at 3/4 time but the girls went back on and fought hard to change the momentum of the game winning the final quarter 10-6 and gave themselves every chance to win the game. Unfortunately we ended up going down by 5. B Grade - The B Grade girls ran with seven players but still finished off with a solid win. Even with some large wins in the first half of the season, the B girls continue to work hard to improve both their individual and team game, consistently asking for feedback and supporting each other both on and off the court. We look forward to coming up against a strong Karingal side this week. This will be the biggest challenge for the B girls so far this season and were excited to see how we match up against them.

Netball Notes Hastings A tough day at the office for our A Grade girls last week, going down to Devon Meadows, but we couldn’t be prouder of the tremendous efforts put in by all of our players. Well done to Helen-Margaret, Armani, Charlize, Nicole, Darcy, Madelina and Lesila for doing a great job of covering for a few absent team mates. The B Grade and 17-Under teams had a couple of hardfought victories while the C and D Grade girls battled it out strongly against some strong opposition. Today we look forward to welcoming Langwarrin to our home court and we realise we have some very big challenges ahead. Langwarrin sit on top of the MPNFL-2 ladder in A Grade so this will be a very big test for our girls. We know they will all do their best as they have done all year.
Pearcedale We took to the court for four games of netball against Red Hill last week and ended with one win, two losses and a draw. Congratulations to the D Grade team for their victory, to the 17s for playing out a thrilling draw, and to all the girls who wore the Pink Panthers colours with pride last Saturday. Today we look forward to our travels to Crib Point and can’t wait to compete in some more exciting games.
