AFL South East It was a great pleasure to be at Jubilee Park last Saturday for the ANZAC ceremony, prior to the YCW v Frankston Bombers match. The luncheon, hosted by YCW President Michael Lamb featured an address by Lieutenant Colonel Perry Gunder who had served the armed forces several times in Iraq, East Timor and Afghanistan. The occasion was also attended by several representatives of the Frankston RSL, including President Kevin Hillier OAM and Vice President John Barry. The on-field pre-game ceremony was a credit to all involved, including a perfectly timed fly over by four old war planes from the Tyabb Aero Club. Special mention to YCW stalwart Glen Hatch who organised the proceedings to the minute, and also designed the outstanding commemorative jumper worn by the YCW players on the day. I’m sure there were many other fitting ANZAC acknowledgements across the League, but I was pleased to witness this one first hand. On a very sad note, our sympathies go out to everyone at the Devon Meadows club on the passing of young Tom Cairney. Tom attended training with his Under 15 mates on Friday night, however he passed away overnight. Our condolences go out to the family, friends, players and all

those associated with Devon Meadows junior and senior football club. In such devastating circumstances, the club rallied around the family and decided to continue with the Under 15 fixture against Edithvale Aspendale on Sunday. This week clubs were reminded of the services available to them through AFL South East in situations such as this tragedy. We have arrangements in place with the MRC Foundation, delivering the “Club Support – Community Program”. The Program partners once again are Sport’s Chaplaincy Australia (SCA) and Sport and Life Training (SALT). The SCA Clubcare Access program provides a support service if a club has a critical incident, traumatic loss or any difficult occurrence. A crisis care chaplain will serve the club when required. SALT provide fully funded Mental Health and Wellbeing education sessions and clubs are encouraged to apply on line. It is a valuable service well worth taking up. For details contact Shaun Connell at the MPNFL office. This week end sees another exciting and even round in prospect. Edithvale Aspendale will be the testing material for undefeated Frankston YCW in MPNFL Division 1, while at the other end of the ladder Mornington will be looking for their first win when they clash with in-form Sorrento for the first time since round 15, 1984 - Mornington winning 13.21.99 to 9.6.60. In Division 2 Dromana and Chelsea are the only unbeaten sides. With Dromana having the bye, Chelsea has the opportunity to join them as they host an improving Tyabb for the first-ever meeting between the clubs at senior level. AFL Vic Country AFLSE talent earn World Team selection Cranbourne’s Kai Supartu and Pakenham’s Douth Jock are among twelve of Victoria’s best Under 15 male Indigenous and Multicultural players to have been selected for the national 2018 Rio Tinto Flying Boomerangs and World Team representative squads. Selected by AFL Club recruiters following the 2018 AFL National Male Diversity Championships held in NSW, the two squads of 25 young men have been chosen based on school attendance, leadership skills, and football ability. Ten players from Victoria’s All Nations squad have been selected in the final World Team for Multicultural players, following a premiership winning performance at the National Diversity Championships last week.

“The Rio Tinto AFL Flying Boomerangs and World Team programs are a great opportunity for our rising Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander and Multicultural talent in Victoria to develop on and off the field, so we’re looking forward to seeing them progress up the football ranks in the near future.” The AFL Flying Boomerangs program is a personal development and leadership program for Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander young men aged 14-16 years old, while the World Team is made up of the best upcoming AFL multicultural players from across the country. The 2018 Rio Tinto Flying Boomerangs and World Team squads will play two exhibition matches at the 2018 NAB AFL Under-16 Championships held on the Gold Coast in July.

Trailing Tasmania in the grand final by 13 points in the second half, Victoria dug deep to kick three unanswered goals to secure a one-point victory after the final siren.

Footy Preview - Division 1 The glitz and glamour of Hollywood By David Nagel If Frankston YCW was a Hollywood star it would be challenging Humphrey Bogart, Gregory Peck and Tom Hanks as one of the best leading men in cinema history. Seriously, the Stonecats have starred in more blockbusters this year than Chris Hemsworth and are about to add to that list with a trip to Regents Park to take on a red-hot Edithvale-Aspendale. The bright lights zoomed in on the Stonecats in round one, where they turned Sorrento into extras, before a trip to Seaford preceded a grand final rematch against Bonbeach. And then came the first instalment of a cross-town rivalry with Frankston Bombers that is sure to have more quality sequels than Rocky. Considering the challenges, Director Wayne Capp could not be prouder of his stars after a four-win start to the season. His players just keep standing up to the challenge. “There’s a lot of belief in this group and that comes from a history built over many years,” Capp explained. “They react to pressure, they absorb it, and they’re a proud group who don’t like to lose. When you ask them for something extra they seem to deliver more often than not.” Capp’s last request for a lift came at three-quarter time in last week’s game against the Bombers, who had their illustrious hosts under pressure with scores locked at 49 each with a quarter to rub. Capp made some modest changes to his structures, but it was belief that steered his team to a five-goal-to-one final term and a hard-earned 26-point victory. “They’re a good team, don’t worry about that, they move the ball quickly and have some top-quality mids who gave us trouble at times,” Capp said of the Bombers. “I just reinforced at three-quarter time to keep the effort and pressure up, and to just be harder for longer over the 100 minutes of footy.”

The Stonecats take on an Eagles outfit, undefeated on the scoreboard but minus four premiership points after a player points breach in round one against Bonbeach. Mick Meehan, Nick Carlon and Liam Harris were all sensational in the win over Seaford last week, while a couple of key forwards will keep the reigning premiers honest. “They won’t be happy with how their finals series panned out, but they were the in-form team in the competition in the back half of last year,” Capp said. “They’ve recruited well and have some good talls in (Michael) Bussey and (Brett) Dore that we will need to keep an eye on.” YCW is chock full of stars but players like Jacob Cheverly, Ben Wagner and Michael Debenham have played their roles to perfection, while Josh Butland and Lachie Street are two youngsters that play well beyond their years.

The ultimate warrior. Ash Eames will look to control the ruck contests against Edi-Asp.

Footy Preview - Division 1 Street in particular has been given some key roles by Capp this year. This will be a great game of footy, and while it’s tempting to tip against the Stonecats it would be done with no sensible reasoning at all. They’re a great team – and they’ll waltz down Hollywood Boulevard with a 13-point victory. Match of the Day honours have already been assigned to Edi-Asp and Frankston YCW but the clash between Frankston Bombers and Pines at Greg Beck Oval is another to tickle one’s fancy. The Bombers have been super-competitive this year and took that hard-edged spirit to new levels last week in a dour three-quarter struggle against the Stonecats. Dale Sutton, Jason Kingsbury, Sam Fox and Ben Northover matched motors with the champions for three quarters before some big-game experience gave the home side the edge in the last stanza of footy. Jarrad Grant is showing glimpses up forward for the Bombers while last year’s leading goal-kicker Zac Longham is another dangerman the Pythons will need to keep an eye on this afternoon. You just have to admire Paddy Swayn and his Pines’ outfit for its resilience to bounce back after a tough and frustrating start to the season. The loss against Seaford hurt, as did the loss to Edi-Asp, but consecutive wins over Mt Eliza and Rosebud have the Pythons sitting in fourth place – the same position they occupied at the end of last year. Swayn suggested the line between pleasure and pain was very fine this year. “Most of our games could have gone either way, we learned lessons against Seaford and Edi-Asp that in this competition you can’t get ahead of yourself and you need to play moment by moment,” he said, before explaining the key to this week’s opponent. “They’re quick. (Dale) Sutton, (Sam) Fox and (Jake) Greeley can hurt you, and they have nearly the most amount of players that have played at a higher level of footy in the competition.” This could be another cracker – we’ll go for the Bombers in a close one. Last year’s grand finalist Bonbeach has struggled to match it with the powerhouse teams in the competition and will look to bounce back to the winners list against Mt Eliza at Emil Madsen Reserve. Steve Hughes and his Sharks have only led once when the final siren has sounded this year, but gaining four points for the Edi-Asp player points breach from round one has camouflaged the situation somewhat. Without those four points the Sharks would be in eighth place with a one-three record and a percentage of 71.62. But those three losses have come against Edi-Asp, Frankston YCW and Sorrento – teams we would expect to see in the thick of the action come late September.

8

Sorrento skipper James Hallahan will be searching for another starring role against Mornington this afternoon. So is this the Sharks’ chance to turn their season around? They could start by playing four quarters of football and being a more potent threat going forward as a result. In the first quarter against Edi-Asp they had just two scoring shots, against Frankston YCW they had just one in the first quarter and two in the last, and then last week against Sorrento they conceded 7.4 to 0.1 in a one-sided second term. In nearly two hours of footy this year the Sharks have had six shots at goal. There are some positives however with Matt Douglas in sensational form down back, while Jacob Flannery, Jackson Casey and Jo Fisscher could all hold their heads high in last week’s 10-goal defeat at the hands of Sorrento. Mt Eliza hit its straps against Mornington last week with James Freeman kicking four in a team that slammed home 20 goals for the match. The Sharks will be a more challenging foe this afternoon, but the Redlegs will get the points in a two-to-three-goal finish. After a sluggish start to the season Sorrento is now rolling along nicely and will look to continue its build-up of form against Mornington at Alexandra Park. The Sharks graph is on a continual uphill spiral at the moment, going down to YCW by 63 points in an inexplicable season-opener before six, 30 and 61-point victories on the bounce. They certainly weren’t thinking it at the time , but that kick up the bum in round one was exactly what Luke Tapscott and his Sharks would need.

www.aflsoutheast.com.au

Footy Preview - Division 1 Since then they’ve been the Sharks of old, bold and daring at times but also resilient enough to take their opponents best shot. In all three wins, over Mt Eliza, Rosebud and Bonbeach, the Sharks have found themselves challenged before imposing their will on the contest. Last week’s win against Bonbeach was impressive to say the least. Sorrento found itself nine-points adrift at the first change before opening up the turbos in the second term with a 7.4 to 0.1 domination. Skipper James Hallahan led the way for the Sorras, with Nick Marston, Chad Harris, Jayden Tomkins and Zach Byrns leading the home side a merry dance. Chris Dawes and Leigh Poholke snagged five goals between them and Jake Di Pasquale also bagged a couple in the best of his three outings for the club. That’s the problem facing Mornington today – the plethora of options the Sharks have going forward. Simon Goosey would love to break his 2018 duck – but it’s the Sorras to head south with a six-goal win in the bank. And Rosebud and Seaford will have their eyes firmly fixed on the one prize when the Buds and Tigers do battle for a precious four points at Olympic Oval. Both teams started the season with impressive wins but have failed to trouble the scorers since, despite matching some pretty-good opposition along the way. Rosebud had the better of the early exchanges against Pines last week, kicking four of the first six goals, before falling away dramatically through the middle stages of the match. Bad kicking at goal was once again an incurable disease for the Buds who conceded 10 consecutive goals in an hour-stretch from the 15-minute mark of the first quarter to midway through the third. They kicked seven points and no majors during that same duration of footy. Greg Bentley continues to relish the challenge of divisionone, while midfielder Fletcher Hustwaite and defender Josh Harris are following their skipper’s lead. And this week it’s the turn of Jordan White and Brenton Davidge to step up as they take on the brute strength and power of Seaford ruckman Matt Terech. The man-mountain has given the Tigers some real stability at the stoppages, providing onballers like Dean Williamson, Damien Rayson and Matt McLennan with a key reference point to work from. Luke Edmondson kicked two on debut for the Tigers last week and will need to get busy again if the visitors are to knock off the Buds on their own patch of dirt. There’s very little splitting these two teams at the moment and it will remain that way today – it’s Rosebud to get the choccies by four points.

Footy Notes Mornington Welcome to the kennel the Sorrento Football Netball Club. Remembering the Anzacs was the theme last week & with perfect conditions, big crowd unfortunately the boys couldn’t get the points. Coming up against the top sides can sometimes be a daunting task & in the 19’s they didn’t turn up to play. Mt Eliza got the jump on them playing a terrific, fast paced & well organised game of football. Kicking 8.7 in the first qtr & the pups just couldn’t recover. No game this week so they can regroup for YCW in a week’s time. The Ressies they all gave the effort required to be in the game all day but just couldn’t come away with the points. Backs were again among the best with Brett, Jimmy, & Sus getting the balance right between defence and attack. Mids Sam D, Smarty, Connor and KT brought the pressure & the forwards were lively enabling us to get multiple shots on goal. In the Seniors is was disappointing as it was an even first half & the boys were playing some good football. They allowed some easy goals & they had to work hard for theirs. Then they came out after half time & once again a few turnovers let Mt Eliza in with a few goals and all of a sudden they dropped their heads and let Mt Eliza run away with the win. The boys are really disappointed with the start to their season & need get some confidence back as a group as they have been in every game so far & eventually the 4 points will come our way. Go Doggies!! WOOF WOOF Round Sponsor THE TEMPO GROUP thetempogroup.com.au

Edi-Asp Got pest problems? Our great sponsors at ACTION PEST CONTROL can help you. They bring you our club notes this week and are the people to see if you are getting to many bugs in your life. Contact them at http://www. actionpestcontrol.com.au/ A cold start to the day turned into a sunny arvo and the senior boys revelled in the conditions to record a solid win. 8 goals in the last held out Seaford and kept us on track. Best players were L. Harris, M. Meehan, N. Carlon, S. Mannix, S. Monaghan, B.O’’Hanlon. The reserves were undermanned due to injury but battled hard against a good Seaford side. The boys toughed it out but went down by 40 points. Best players were M. Byrnes, J. Nash, Z. Bailey, S. Miller, R. Morris.

The young boys in the 19’s were never troubled and scored a strong win. Currently sitting on top of the ladder the boys have a big test this week. Best players were W. Barron, B. Seamons, Z. Barrett, L. Kemelfield, K. Hutchinson, B. Ward. Our netball girls played next door and had 3 strong wins. The A grade girls missed out but will bounce back this week. ****NEXT CLUB FUNCTION**** LAS VEGAS CASINO NIGHT SATURDAY 12TH MAY 7.30 PM REGENTS PARK SOCIAL ROOMS Want all the latest news, results and info from the club? Frankston YCW Today we are off to Regent Park to take on Edi-Asp. Based on ladder positions it appears there will be some cracker games. Congrats to Jack Mazurek 100 1st XVIII games and Charlie Patterson 100 Senior games. Last week we hosted a bumper crowd for the Anzac ceremony. It was a wonderful and moving experience choreographed by Hatchy. Thanks to the Bombers for joining us for lunch and the After Match. On the field we had a clean sweep. The Dew Kickers had plenty of dew to kick and, after a sluggish start, got their act together in the second half to secure a 16 point win. Josh Berenger, Kobe Johnson and Jayden Race were best. The Magoos stormed out of the blocks with a five goal first stanza and controlled the game from there running out comfortable winners. Crackers, Blacky and Zinzi dominated and Chappy kicked 5 large. The Numeros had a titanic struggle with a resilient Bombers outfit - the game tied at 3/4 time. A five goal last quarter got us the chocolates. Wags got the Anzac Medal, Streety and Mincho were in everything whilst Bysa and Jack M were solid. Congrats to the Netballers who also had a clean sweep – you can read about it in their notes. **Coming up on May 12 (the Pines game) we have the past players function where legendary tales are swapped and retold. **Don’t forget the Black and White Ball on May 26! Footy Notes Frankston Bombers

Sponsor of the Day

Happy Local Footy Day to all & welcome to the Greg Beck Oval for chapter 5 in the Bombers story of 2018, this week against Pines. Congratulations to both the Frankston YCW & Frankston Bombers footy clubs on the respect shown to the spirit of our Anzacs in the past week. The ceremony at YCW last Saturday was relevant & moving and then the flyover added something spectacular. Terrific to see the great turnout of our boys Frankston at the Frankston dawn ceremony on Wednesday to show their respects to our service men & women. Thanks to the Grand Hotel for their A Grade hospitalty in serving breakfast for our crew after the service. The meals at The Grand are always top notch and with the meal deals always great value - you should visit for lunch or dinner.

Special thanks to the work of committee last weekend with club votes to Fiona Hale, Jackson Hale, Kim Jackson, Natasha Cornell, John Wolsgrove and to Doc Watson and the footballers taking the time to clean after the game as well as run water. Club is pumping at the moment with a heap of positive momentum. Enjoy all.

Sorrento

Our footy against the competition benchmark was good but not quite good enough last week and it shows that in the new comp we have to be a bit better to get the results that we want. Well played to our mids with Sutts, Kinga & Foxy all in good form. Travies boys had a crack, however not even the inclusion of Dougie & Seany C could get us a result. Zac & Burry were good as was Aaron with 3 goals. The young Bombers were right in the game at 3/4 time but could not force any scoreboard pressure in the last. Keep your heads up lads, listen to Zach and a win will not be far away. Loved the work on Joey, Willo & Levi who led the way for the red & black. Go Bomber

We ventured up to Bonbeach last week for the first time in a long time. What a sensational set up they have too with the magnificent stadium and one of the best decks you could wish to play on. They turned on the weather too so it was all set for a good day.

Pines

The seniors were down at quarter time against a Bonbeach side that came out snarling. The second quarter however saw the boys playing the type of footy that would make a jelly fish hard. The only negative for the quarter was when the coach went into a pack optimistically and came out misty optically. He was done for the day, but we had plenty that took up the slack in what was our best 4 quarter effort for the year. Today brings a new challenge so know time to take the foot off, let’s be sure to bring our A game again.

Thank you to Seaford RSL, senior Vice President, Peter Kerley, representing the pre-game remembrance service. A poignant reminder that most of the young armed forces that lost lives in past wars were younger than the players lining up. Thank you to Rosebud FNC, the Southern Umpires and all that assisted on the day. Centurion competition is now underway and expect to be allocated Calcutta teams this week. (Brown paper bags not only accepted but expected). Another beaut Autumn day supported a great day hosting Rosebud for the first time since the early 90¹s. (Validated by the many representatives of ‘fact check¹ to whom I thank). A couple of wins and a draw in the netball, complimented 3 wins in the football with all games enjoying a good and vocal crowd.

The Scoobs made it two in a row as they begin to work their way into the season. It was a tight tussle for most of the day which is what we’ve come to expect quickly in the new competition. But the boys with a nice blend of youth and experience were able to come away with what in the end was a reasonably comfortable victory. Numbers on the track are what we want as we look to set up our season over the next month.

Thought of the week: Today is the oldest you’ve ever been but also the youngest you’ll ever be!

So here we are into the 5th round already with this week away at Frankston Bombers ground for the first time since (insert date here). Should be a great day as we celebrate our connection and play for the Kermit cup.

Footy Notes Seaford Such a special day for our Club to join in the Anzac Day Service at Seaford RSL on Wednesday. It’s a fantastic tradition arranged by the late Geoff Smith where all the local community groups & residents get to participate in the day where we remember all Australians who continue to serve and sacrifice all over the world. Thank you to the Seaford RSL on a job well done. A very big thank you to Edithvale FNC senior men & women who participated in last weekends pre match Anzac Day Service. It was great to see the guys and girls participate together in such a special service. Also a wonderful job by the talented crew from Seaford Park Primary School singing our national anthem. Thank you to Ella, Ella, Ava, Olivia & Eva. No trend there. A reminder for our playing groups tonight that the first players function is on at the Belvedere Clubrooms. Flier is attached for all the late comers.

Sam Hallpike booted 3 and Buz a couple, with other better players being Scotty, Sammy Howell, Togga & Smithy. In an entertaining goal for goal first half the Seniors led narrowly before breaking the game open in the 3rd with 8 goals to 3. A further 3 goals to 2 in the last saw us win well by 39. The forward line functioned well with Jimmy and the two Jordan’s booting 10 between them. Robbie Turnbull with 3 collected the Anzac Day Medal and other great contributors were Boota, young debutant Ned Cahill (1) Ryan McGannon (2) Skinny, Gorms (1) & Webby. Sponsor of the Week - kikki.k Swedish Stationery & Gifts - Thanks to Paul Lacy. Redleg.

Rosebud Today we extend a warm welcome to the Seaford Tigers for their first trip to Olympic Park since 1990! Both senior teams are sitting 1-3 so it is sure to be a hotly contested game. Last week the Club faced big challenges across the board with significant outs in the senior teams – not to take away from Pine’s results. The Unders did well to leap to an early lead and hold a slight advantage going into the last. Unfortunately they ran out of legs with 17 players up against a team with a full squad of rotations. The boys continue to do the Club proud by sticking tight and fighting hard.

Mt Eliza Today we welcome the Bonbeach FNC to Madsen Reserve. Last Sunday we commemorated Anzac Day at Mornington and paid our respects to our past and present servicemen and women. We collected the points in all games, with the Seniors retaining the Vosti Shield once again. The Under 19’s kept their winning form up with a big win to get the day started. Holding them to just one goal at 1/2 time while having 19 scoring shots ourselves was great. We wasted a few opportunities in the last half but ended up with a 94 Point win. Sam Sturt was best on ground with 6 goals and Kobe Dalais 2 & Ed Evans-Brumby chipped in with a couple each. Others to feature in the best were Tom Baker, Aaron Foss, Mark Colvin & Will Antonie. The Reserves had a tough game against the Doggies who stuck with us for 3 quarters, before we kicked clear in the last to win by 21.

It has been a tough few weeks the Development Team with a ton of injuries and unavailability’s. We battled well for the first half but couldn’t hold on in the second half. A big shout out to Azza Wilson, Chris Rogers, Phil Fisher, Jamie Raphael, Jack Beale and Luke Farrelly for coming out of retirement to help out! The senior game marked the 200 game milestone for one of our club favourites Brenton Payne. Unfortunately the lads couldn’t bring home a win for him or our loyal band of supporters who made the trip. There were some solid performers for the Buds throughout the day, but the opposition played their home turf to their advantage and came out victors. Make sure everyone stays back for tonight’s Rockstars & Pop Idols function which kicks off at 7.30 pm. Dress as your favourite star & walk the red carpet. Tickets are $20. Go buds!

Footy Notes Bonbeach A tough day for the Sharks of Bonbeach. Sorrento played well and displayed better poise and skill across the 2s and 1s. We will be better for it. This week we face Mt Eliza and look forward to the response. A friendly reminder about our ALOHA function tonight at the clubrooms from 7pm. It will be plenty of fun. Wear your Hawaiian shirts!! Go Sharks!

Netball Preview - Division 1 Super-six set for a showdown By David Nagel The thrills continue in MPNFL Division One netball today with the top-six teams locking horns in another blockbuster round of matches. Last week we saw Seaford make its biggest statement of the year with a 14-goal victory over Edi-Asp, while Sorrento overcame the absence of Shelley O’Donnell to join the Tigers as the only unbeaten teams in the competition. And today we fill more pieces on what is becoming a very difficult puzzle to solve. Top-of-the-table Sorrento makes the relatively short trip to Mornington today, keen to build on a four-zip start to the season against a genuine finals contender. The Sharks haven’t missed a beat this year with Alana Schaeche moulding a talented list into a high-quality… but still improving team. O’Donnell was the big-name missing last week as the Sorras had little trouble in defeating bottom-placed Bonbeach to set up this week’s showdown. The core of the team was impressive last week with Bec Kelly (GD) and Kate Youlten (GK) stingy in defence and Schaeche joining Dominique Taylor and the versatile Maddi Graham as dangers under the ring. Graham started the game in the midcourt, providing great support to Briana O’Hehir and Sophie Phillips, who looked comfortable filling the big shoes of O’Donnell. Graham then swapped bibs and scored 14 of her sides 27 goals in the second half. But Mornington will be no pushover today, coming in full of beans after a brilliant performance against Mt Eliza last week. The game was basically over at quarter time after Mornington scored 16 goals to six, with Brittany Archdeacon (GS) and Katey Rudolph (GA) receiving some wonderful supply from the likes of Georgia Hunter (C) and Tess Haddock (WA), while Alex Newton (GK) and the reliable Candace Page (GD) gave nothing away in defence. Mornington will be up for this one – but Sorrento will win by roughly 10 goals. Seaford takes the trip south to Rosebud in what could be a tricky expedition. The Tigers look rock-solid right across the court and are thoroughly deserving of their top-two ranking right now. Rosebud’s goalers will need to overcome the frugal demeanour of Kara Hargrave, Tracey Dell and Shannon Rennison, while Rachel Cosans, Tayla Robertson and Alesina Toleafoa are proving hard to stop in transition. Throw in a couple of handy finishers in Chelsea Robertson and Ashleigh Mitchener and the Tigers are looking a pretty complete outfit at the moment.

26

Sorrento can expect tough opposition from Mornington all the way through the grades. But the Buds are in with a chance and will bring some confidence to the table after a strong win over Pines last week. Millie McDermott (WA) was the outstanding player on the court while Lauren Robinson (GS) and Emma White (GA) fine tuned their skills for this week with impressive goal-shooting performances. This will be a massive test for the Buds. They’ll push the visitors at times, but Seaford’s overall class will prove telling in the end. And Edi-Asp and Frankston YCW round out the top-six encounters with a Saturday-showdown at Chelsea. Edi-Asp suffered its first taste of defeat against Seaford last week while the Stonekittens put in a dominant display against Frankston. Lyshae Barry (GK) earned the Anzac Medal for a terrific defensive performance, while Brooke Cant (WA), Ashleigh Whitnell (GA) and Jade Heinrich (GD) were also star performers for the Kittens. Heinrich brings a wealth of experience, and success, to the table this year and her elite coaching skills will be a great asset to Jess Tobin and her coaching staff. This one will go all the way down to the wire, and we’ll go for the Stonekittens to pull off a bit of an upset of sorts. In other games, Carly Russo should lead Mt Eliza to a strong-win over Bonbeach, while Frankston and Pines look set for a very close contest at Frankston. Both teams will be desperate to get their first win on the board. Sarah Muston, Bev Ashauer and Emma Mason will need to be at the top of their game for the home side, while Theresa Blaauw will look to continue her great form for the Beaches. Another close one looms, but it’s Ashauer and her team who will be celebrating a win for the first time in 2018.

This round is brought to you by MKA Machine Knives Australia, our principal sponsors from day one in 2009, their support on & off the field is invaluable to this club! Thank you to Noel & Vanessa for helping us survive & succeed! Last week we played Seaford & D grade bounced back to the winners list with a fantastic team effort. C & B grades were both tough games with the girls being able to pull away to record good wins. Kudos to Bonnie who continues to improve in goals & played a ripper of a game. Going into the A grade match, we were probably favourites but this was immediately knocked on its head with Seaford doubling our score in the first quarter, then increasing their lead over the next two. Showing the true Eagle Spirit, our girls fought back to win the last quarter but it was too little too late. It was a great game & we’re looking forward to our next encounter. This week we welcome the YC girls to Chelsea & as usual we’re expecting 4 tough battles, so get down to the Chelsea CDNA courts & cheer the girls on! Good Luck today! Fly Eagles!!

Frankston YCW Our A grade girls came out firing against Bombers last week taking a 13 point lead at quarter time. We moved the ball well, drove hard and took many contested possessions against a very physical side. At half time we led by 26 and converted 10/11 turnovers. We dropped a bit of intensity in the last quarter which allowed Bombers to get a bit of a run on however we still managed to win the quarter by 6 goals. Best on goes to Ash and congrats to Lyshae for winning the ANZAC medal. B grade also had a great win starting strong with a 17 5 first quarter. BOG goes to Kirsty for 4 sold quarters in defence. Although there is still lots of improvement ahead the C grade also had a great game and put into play what we have been working on at training. Our biggest achievement was finally improving on our first quarter and playing strong across all four quarters. Let’s keep working hard to make sure we convert our centre passes.

BOG this week goes to Lauren for a brilliant game chasing up loose balls, feeing into the ring and her defensive pressure. D grade also had another great win making it 4 out of 4! Bombers applied a lot of great defensive pressure that made us work a bit harder than previous weeks, however our ability to pick the balls off and have a successful turnover really dominated today. BOG goes to Eve for an absolute stellar performance in defence with a huge amount of intercepts. Over the next two weeks we face Edi and Mornington in what will be massive challenges!

Mt Eliza Anzac Round saw Mt Eliza take on Mornington at Mornington. The contest between both teams is always a very even contest and this week was no different with each team winning 2 games each. D GRADE got off to a slow start and although they were down by 10 goals at 1/2 time ended up fighting back but lost by 2 (29-30). Krystal was great at both ends while Kate was strong in centre. C GRADE were dominant from the start, working the ball up and back with precision, they walked away with a 21 goal win (52-31). Jordie continues to impress in the mid court, while the combination of Mandy and Di in defence is unstoppable. B GRADE walked away with a 10 goal win (31-21) putting on a ripper performance. Although the game was riddled with turnovers by both teams it was super competitive Michelle, Shay and Tiarne were amazing in defence while we welcomed Gabby back into goals after a week off. A GRADE started very sloppy and let the dogs get away with a handy lead at quarter time. Unfortunately although the rest of the game was competitive and close we could not claw back the score and lost 39-58. Carly Russo played a great game in centre while Pippa and Jamie teamed well in defence. We finish round 4 with B, C, D in the top 4, while A grade sit just outside on 2 wins and 2 losses. Next week we take on Bonbeach at home and will be looking to keep all teams on the winners board.

Sorrento Rebecca Kelly was again on fire, & played a beautiful game in defence demonstrating the spirit of skills & sportsmanship that rightfully landed her the Anzac Medal. Sophie & Chelsea stepped up into A Grade with such strength and ease. Both players demonstrated remarkable effort & bought the skills to match, highlighting the exciting depth we have. Persistent pressure resulted in many turnovers bought back down to our end with a fast paced & smart attack. Even with a strong defensive pressure from Bonbeach our

Best on Rebekka, Bree & Domi B grade worked hard as a team just falling short of another win by 2 goals in a nail biter for spectators. An overall team effort again with best on Gemma, Jenae and Mikkea playing extremely well in their respective positions. S:27 def by B:29 Great effort from all the C grade who kept their heads up and fought to the end. Well done to Brooke, Maddi and Macy who all did an amazing job in defence. Holly & Olivia also worked very well in goals together. S:32 def by B:41. Best on Grace, Ruby P & Brooke D grade came out after a strong win last week, not wanting to feel too confident. We put all we had into the game & came out with another win! Ruby B starred in defence & Amy is on a roll in goals. Well done girls. S:38 def B:24. Best on Sarah, Ruby B and Amy Thank you PENINSULA CINEMAS for your support GO SHARKS

Frankston Bombers We pranced our way to the cattery, more excited about our hideous jackets then the games ahead. C grade was as fierce as singing horses in a circle at a silent disco. Bec&Holly tore up the circle more then the dancefloor & Kels raised her voice just enough to hear over headphones. Sadly we couldn’t score ample bargains to take the win. El had preworkout before D grade & we could tell. She kept running, snagging all the bargains. Skye shuffled from defense to goals to the dancefloor & didn’t skip a beat. G had a costume change at 1/2 time into something more velvety. Unlucky for us, the cat got the $3 Kookai crop.B grade got to the silent disco I mean got on court keen to go.Chloe was shuffling in all routes while Cell got her pony and rode the cats like she was at Cruze! Britt was changing directions like we were changing channels on the headphones. The 2nd half was our better half&despite the loss we kept our heads high and shimmied off to the disco.A grade moon walked their way into the game. The intensity was high, the music was blasting and the girls preworkout set them up for a ripper.Defensive duo Bevo & Musto were booty shaking in the circle, grinding all over the kittens. Down the other end Jen&Em were sinking goals like Blair was sinking crusiers. The A grade milfs showed us kids theyve still got what it takes, finishing strong and backing it up at the disco. Unlucky for the girls they didnt win the danceoff but theyve still got the moves like Jaggar. #GoNetball #COR

Pines Seaford Holy guacamole it’s round four We played netball, Maddie hit the floor Broken wrist, what a shame Hope it’s a speedy recovery & you’re soon back in the game Edi eagles they are tough to beat Our D grade losing by 70 goals isn’t the best treat C grade, B grade A grade was a blur Great matches though I concur Post-match cob loaf for afternoon tea It was bloody delicious I know you’ll agree Cob loaf – yep I’ll finish on that high Cos this has been an absolutely shocking rhyme

Last week saw us take on Rosebud at home! As they are new to our division this year we went into the day unknown as to how successful our day was going to be. D Grade went in with high hopes and full of confidence! Emma smashed it in WA and earned BOC and helped lead the girls to their second win of the season! C Grade had an up and down match which saw them down by 9 at one stage. However a 3/4 pump up from their captain saw them claw their way back to a draw. BOC Tonya. B Grade are looking more and more comfortable playing together and put on a show for everyone. Another amazing performance from a WA in Piper to earn BOC. Fantastic win girls! Rosebud got an early jump on our A Grade goals with some very tall and accurate goaling. Even though it was a tough day out, credit to our girls for keeping their heads high and pushing through until the end. Special mention to young Merinda who had a fantastic match in WD. This week we look forward to playing another new arrival in Frankston Bombers. Go Pythonettes!

Welcome to Sorrento today, a new club who is travelling well & we look forward to the challenge.

D grade Beautiful conditions we ventured down to Pines. There were great passages of play during the 4 quarters, but the bad passages let us down. With more consistency during the 4 quarters will eventually win one. Well done!! Best on Abbey Hepner and Gemma Linnell in defence. C grade In good conditions we knew we were in for a tough game. The girls got a nice lead at three quarter time, but to the credit of the Pines they fought back. We needed to capitalise on our turnovers, well done to all. Best on Lily Wills and Tayla Prentice B grade We had some great movements with every quarter and seemed to work much better together than last weeks game. Unfortunately we had another loss. Congratulations to India White and Jess Smith for best on. A grade Awesome work today girls to get another win on the board. We worked hard from the start and played our game with everyone pulling their weight to walk away with a 29 point win. Well done girls, absolutely smashed it! Best on Millie McDermott and Emma White. Also congratulations to Millie for winning the Anzac medal for best on court! A reminder that tonight we have our Rockstars & Pop Idols function at the Club from 7.30 pm. Dress as your favourite star & walk the red carpet. Tickets are $20 purchase at the Club, via the App or bank transfer. Go Buds!

“Anytime Fitness Mornington” A Grade we won comfortably against Mt Eliza, coming away with a near 20 goal win. We finally welcomed back Alex Newton for her first half of netball since having a knee reco. The girls were strong and looked good, Britta had a run out in GA for a half and killed it. It was nice to get Katy back in goals . Congratulations to Tess Haddock who was awarded the Anzac Medal given by the umpires. “Mach1 Panel & Paint” B Grade had another disappointing loss with a game that we should have won. We had 12 failed attempts at the post in the first half. The defenders turned over plenty but again we just didn’t capitalise and reward them for their hard work. Demi has come up from the C grade and held her own, growing with confidence every quarter she plays. Our defenders were strong and again Meg earnt the player of the match. C Grade had a big loss but there was still great passages of play and a lot of positives to take away from the game. Chris Anthony played a solid mid court game offensively and in defence, she showed a lot of determination and never game up, so she was BOC. D Grade just scrapped through to take the win by 2 goals against Mt Eliza on Sunday. Some outstanding attacking & defensive mid court action by Lara earned her “Best On”. Still plenty to improve as we take on new rival Sorrento today. Go Doggies WOOF WOOF

A Slice of MPNFL History Chelsea on a new adventure By Doug Dyall

Season 2018 will bring in many new adventures for the Chelsea Football Club as it comes up against three clubs that it has never had the opportunity of playing senior football against before. And today that journey begins when the club hosts Tyabb in MPNFL Division Two. But 2018 is not the first time that the Seagulls have found themselves outside of either the MPFL or Division One since the club joined the MPFL in 1959. It was back in 1999 when the club found itself relegated after losing the last nine rounds after being just outside the top four with four wins and five losses. It immediately rebounded to win the division-two flag and return where Chelsea followers felt familiar - the top competition. The return of promotion and relegation at the end of 2017 has again found Chelsea in unfamiliar territory and up against clubs that it has never met. After Tyabb, this weekend. The Seagulls meet both Dromana and Devon Meadows to complete the full gamut of playing all other senior clubs on the Peninsula. Looking at Chelsea - who have been around in one form or another for over 100 years – it has been one of the most successful sides on the Peninsula when it comes to winning premierships. It started in 1921 when Chelsea were excluded from the Federal League and played as Carrum seconds in the Peninsula Football Association with many of the players that had been expelled in 1920. They beat Hastings that year, but were back to the Federal League in 1922.

Chelsea took out the Federal League district premiership in 1936 and won the B Section in 1937, before taking out the 1955 Federal League premiership. The club decided in 1959 to join the MPFL and over the last six decades have won 10 premierships which is a huge success. The glory years were the sixties winning five flags in 1962, ‘63, ‘66, ’67 and ‘68 led by league and club legend Kevin ‘Doc’ White. It took 18 more years to win another title in 1986 and that was followed by the first premiership in the newly formed MPFNL in 1987. Chelsea was a winner again in 1990 before slipping back to win the division-two flag in 2000 and their last victory was in 2006. Over the last 60 years only Frankston YCW with 15 premierships and Sorrento with 11 are in front of Chelsea who have 10. Other clubs who have done well are Edi Asp with eight, Mornington and Crib Point with seven, whilst Pines, Narre Warren, Rye, Pearcedale, Seaford and Hastings have all won six flags.

Chelsea premiers in 2000.

The first of five premierships through the sixties in 1962.

Tigers are on the right track By David Nagel Just come closer for a minute. Just between you, me and the gatepost – Dromana is not playing this week, so we’ve decided to take a close look at what makes the ladder-leading and undefeated Tigers tick in 2018. Victories over Rye, Somerville, Devon Meadows and Karingal have the Tigers sitting pretty as they put their feet up this week ahead of games against Chelsea and Hastings leading into the Interleague bye on May 19. They may be unconquered, but Rikki Johnston and his boys haven’t had things all their own way in their four victories to date. Scores were level at three-quarter time against the Demons, before conceding a fast-start against the Eagles and then rallying strongly after brave third-quarter comebacks from the Panthers and the Bulls. Winning ugly is one thing, but doing it with a plethora of new faces is something that Johnston is proud of in the early part of the season. And, he believes, they will only get better as they become more accustomed to each other’s traits. “We need to remember we’ve got six or seven new faces in our starting 22 so when the boys get some continuity we should get more consistency in our performance,” Johnston said. “Having said that I’ve been rapt with the way the boys have fought games out this season because a couple of our games have really been in the balance heading into the last quarter. “But right now it’s not about playing pretty, it’s more about getting wins on the board and our will to win has been first class over the first month of football.” Johnston’s own career began in 2004 at age 23, when the now 37-year-old put his baseball mitt away and started a football journey that is still running strong today. He spent two years at Langwarrin but made his name at Dromana, being a premiership player in 2013, a captain for many years, and making his interleague debut at the age of 27 in 2008. He captained the MPNFL in last year’s AFL Victoria Community Championships clash against Geelong at the MCG. But his focus at the moment is all around team and getting the classic blend of youth and experience to gel together as a unit and earn promotion to division one. Exactly half of his starting 22 against Karingal last week were aged 21 or under, creating a nice mix with players in their thirties like Ben Holmes, Matt Price and Beau Cosson. The Tigers average age against the Bulls last week was 24.32. Holmes has played his role to perfection up forward this year, allowing exciting youngster Ethan Johnstone to take the competition by storm, leading the league goal-kicking list with 14 goals for the season.

“He’s a young bloke who played in our 2015 under-19s flag and he’s come along in leaps and bounds this year,” Johnston said. “He’s got a lot of tricks and kicked one of the best goals I’ve ever seen on the weekend. He gets along well with the boys and is becoming a really important member of the team.” Johnston also acknowledged the improved consistency across the board, with players like Zac Muschialli and Ryan Smyth joining youngsters Billy Quigley, Sam Geurts and Dean Waugh on the list of big improvers. “Those blokes (Muschialli and Smyth) don’t get the plaudits they deserve, and the young blokes are becoming super-reliable performers at a very young age,” he said. “You can’t ask for more than that as a coach and it’s creating a depth that we’ve never really had before.” Johnston believes the implementation of a two-tier divisional structure has been a huge positive for football in general on the Peninsula. “The whole divisional concept has been a fantastic initiative from our point of view, it’s really evened things out and we’re getting good contests right across the board,” the Tigers’ leader said. “And it’s come at the perfect time for us, we don’t want to get pigeon holed as a division two club – division one is our aim – and it gives us a chance to get more development into our players if we do get to that next level.” There’s no doubt about it, the Tigers are right on track – but just keep that between you and me.

Sam Geurts is one of a talented breed of young Tigers looking to take Dromana all the way in 2018.

Footy Preview - Division 2 Is it the Bulls or Blues to bounce back? By David Nagel Karingal and Hastings are both on the rebound for the first time this season and will look to avoid back-to-back losses at Ballam Park today. As we all know, footy seasons can change in a hurry and the Bulls and the Blues are perfect examples of that right now. Just seven days ago they were both undefeated and flying on cloud-nine – today they fight to avoid a slip outside the top five...that’s how quick it can happen.

Hasting’s skipper Paul Rogasch is having a sensational season for the Blues.

Karingal gave up too big a start against Dromana last week, rallying strongly in the third quarter before running out of petrol in the final term. The Blues on the other hand were blown away early by Chelsea before making the scoreboard look respectable in the last quarter. Hastings coach Ricky Ferraro is at a loss to explain the continual slow starts that have plagued his team this season. “We had a poor build up to the Tyabb game and started slowly, so we really focussed on hitting the ground running last week but we were outplayed by Chelsea in all areas in the first quarter,” Ferraro said. “A performance like that leaves you scratching your head a bit, because we trained well but just weren’t ready to compete. We can’t just sweep it under the table, we were poor, and we have to improve on that performance.” Ferraro believes a change in mindset will do the trick. “We’re training well and we all believe in each other, but I think there’s been an individual mindset that’s been creeping in,” he said. “Just that single-minded commitment to run both ways for each other, just simple things like that. But we’re not panicking, we’re two and one, we haven’t peaked yet, and we’ve got a lot of good football ahead of us.” Someone who is already playing good football is Paul Rogasch, the Blues skipper who has bounced back to his best playing a sweeping role across half back. Another to impress Ferraro is Matthew Foy, who is creating plenty of drive from deep in defence. A back injury ruined Foy’s 2017 season but he is back up and running and making the most of his opportunities right now. So who takes the better form heading in? Karingal was super-impressive in the premiership quarter against Dromana last week, kicking 6.2 to 0.3 to cut a 40-point deficit back to just five points at the final break. Okay they didn’t get over the line, but that third quarter shows the Bulls best footy is more than capable of matching it with the in-form team in the competition right now.

Footy Preview - Division 2 Andrew Mathers was sensational for the Bulls last week, while Aaron Lees, Grant Goodall, Bailey Frey and Todd Farrelly rallied bravely against strong opposition. But the key this week will be to do it from the start because Hastings will come out breathing fire. Ferraro will have the Bart Cummings stop-watch out this week trying to train his team to the minute – but it’s the Bulls to win at home by 17 points. With winning comes the burden of expectation and Devon Meadows will take very-high expectations on its trip to Lloyd Park to take on Langwarrin this afternoon. The Panthers rode a six-goal effort from exciting forward Michael Theodoridis to a 14-point victory over Somerville last week in a game that rubber-stamped their rating as one of the big improvers in 2018. Theodoridis and Allan Murray (four goals) bagged 10 goals between them as the Panthers opened up a 32-point lead at three-quarter time. Sommy kicked 2.9 to 0.3 in the final term, squandering opportunities, but they were never really deserving of victory. The Panthers are capable of an exciting brand of football with Stef Baumgartner, Tim Saunders, Kyle Beveridge and Pat Boland all producing the goods against the Eagles. The trick now for Glenn Michie and his boys is to replicate that form on a weekly basis and deal with the weight of expectation that being an improving side can bring. Experienced types like Ash Adams, Jesse Dehey, Gavin Kerr and Mat Fletcher will have crucial and steadying roles to play against a Langwarrin side getting more and more desperate for a victory.

The Kangaroos fought out a ripping game against Karingal in round one before splitting the points with Red Hill in shocking conditions in round two. A four-point loss to Pearcedale last week really did rub salt into an already painful wound. But co-coaches Josh Beard and Blake McCormack won’t be hitting the panic button just yet. Jesse Murphy is showing some good form in attack, kicking four-goals against the Dales last week, while Gerard Brown, Josh Dormer and Shane Paterson haven’t been frightened to carry some workload. The Kangas just need to break their duck and their entire season could take a very significant change for the better. But it’s back-to-back away victories for the Panthers, who will overcome the early burden of expectation to find a way to win…this time by 11 points. Chelsea is enjoying the switch to division two football more than most and will look to maintain its unbeaten run when it welcomes Tyabb to Chelsea Reserve. The Seagulls have the opportunity to join Dromana on four wins and set up a mouth-watering round-five clash between the unbeaten teams at their home ground next weekend. Chelsea hit the ground running against Hastings last week. Curtis Bywater has been the star up forward for the Gulls, kicking 13 goals for the season, but there’s been a very even contribution around the ground.

Footy Preview - Division 2 Todd Gardiner is one of the in-form players in the league, while Brad Clark, Jack Francis and Josh Herdman have all played key roles at crucial times in games. Those players led the way in a seven-goal-to-one first quarter demolition of the Blues. Tyabb took a backward step against Red Hill last week and coach Aaron Pacey will be keen to get his team back on track. Aaron Turner and Brendan Doyle continue to work hard through the middle, but there was always going to be some inconsistencies in this developing young Yabbies’ list. Chelsea will win this one, but the margin will be determined by how hard the Yabbies work for each other and how confident they want to be when the host Crib Point at Bunguyan Reserve in seven days’ time. It’s the Seagulls by 43 points. Flying high after its first win of the season, Red Hill will attempt to make further inroads on the ladder leaders when it welcomes Crib Point to the Showgrounds. The Hillmen didn’t give the improving Tyabb a sniff last week, carving out a 27-point lead in the first quarter and building to 59-points by half time. Ben Hughes kicked five for the winners but having 10 goal kickers was probably a bigger indication of Red Hill’s overwhelming dominance on the day. Jake Mitchell was one of those players to hit the scoreboard in a starring role in the win.

Karingal legend Michael Burke will be a key for the Bulls against the Blues. Lachie Chandler, Shea Mitchell, Michael Mock and Marcus Dal Lago all had impressive outings and will be key players to stop for the Magpies this afternoon. It’s blatantly obvious we know, but Crib Point needs to find a way to create more scoring opportunities. It has scored just 124 points in three games of footy – a tick over 41 points per game – and that’s just not going to get the job done.

www.aflsoutheast.com.au

Footy Preview - Division 2 On the other hand the Magpies are conceding 109 points per game - Pearcedale and Somerville are next worst on that list conceding 88. Brad Davidson, Luke Herrington, Ned Shannon and Zak Dekleuver will need to lead the way in the opening exchanges for the Magpies to be a chance – but they’ll go down by seven goals plus. Today’s game between Somerville and Pearcedale is shaping up to be a lot closer than most would have anticipated just seven days ago. But Somerville’s 14-point loss to Devon Meadows and Pearcedale’s four-point victory over Langwarrin has this one enrolled in the toss-of-the-coin category. Pearcedale would have been extremely disappointed with its last quarter against Chelsea in round two, after leading at three-quarter time, but put that frustration to good use against the Kangaroos last week. The Dales had 12 scoring shots in a 5.7 to 1.2 first term that made all the difference at the final siren. Dave Hussey, Dan Heijden and Troy Jacobson were fantastic for the Panthers while Luke Dalmau kicked three in a dangerous exhibition up forward. The big question now is: Can Pearcedale back it up against the Eagles. Andrejs Everitt would not have been anticipating a onetwo start to the season and will have this one pencilled in as a must-win for his side. Lose this and it’s a long way back for the Eagles! Billy Rolfe has been a shining light up forward – and will need to continue that role with Ryan Gillis out for the season - while Levi Hughes, Ben Sedgwick and Tim McGenniss will look to continue their fine form to get the Eagles across the line. It’s Somerville to win by 25 points.

Footy Notes Tyabb

Our U/19’s did a fantastic job holding the highly fancied Hillmen to only 10 goals in an entertaining contest. Our boys are continuing to work hard on their game at training & the results are starting to show on game day. Development- With only 2 changes to the previous weeks team a more settled side jumped out of the blocks well in the first quarter, kicking the first 2 goals and it looked like we were really going to attack the game well. Unfortunately we then couldn’t keep the game on our terms & Red Hill kicked the next 6 goals to dent any chance we may have had. We fought the game out but just couldn’t pull back that margin. Seniors- The drive up the hill was lovely and so was the weather once we got there! Unfortunately that was where the enjoyable part stopped for the senior side. Jumped by a slick Red Hill outfit with a point to prove we were down 5 sossies to 1 at quarter time and 11 to 2 at the main break. We were getting plenty of first use from the tall timber in the middle but we just couldn’t get our hands on it cleanly and the hillmen were causing chaos with their spread & overlap. Second half we were more competitive putting 4 goals to 6 on the board. The boys from Bunguyan did have a couple of winners out there in Spenny Mccartney & Handsom Ransom who battled hard all day. Luke Allen (1st gamer), Silk Williams & Az Turner were also servicable. Bit of a seachange this week as we head down to Chelsea in search of our first W of the year!#nipnip

Somerville Round 3 seen the sun out and a big crowd at the nest. The day started off positive with the under 19`s having a fantastic win by over 100 points the boys are really starting to click. Mantell with 5 goals Max and whitey were amongst the best. The reserves also proved that they are looking forward to a competitive season and were on top all day getting up by 100 points. Luke Burton was hard at it all day, Trav Finn and Aussie got amongst the goals with 5 and 4 respectively. The seniors were in it all day however some wayward kicking in the last quarter may have been the difference on the day. Kane McKenzie was solid all day and was awarded the ANZC Medal. Tim Maguiness and Sedgy were also amongst the best.

We are there about and when we can put 4 quarters together we will be very hard to beat. Unfortunately Ryan Gills AKA the G Man went down with a season ending knee injury. We wish him all the best and a speedy recovery. This week sees us Welcome Pearcedale to the nest for the Postcode cup. Go Eagles

Welcome all to Lloyd Park today as we take on Devon Meadows. Today also we host our President’s and Sponsor’s Lunch. Thanks to all those that have attended. Let’s hope;in what looks to be a closely fought, competitive year, its a successful day for the club. Last week, in what were perfect footy conditions we played traditional rival Peracedale. Given the tradition, and the history of the Bushman’s Cup this is a game that both teams set themselves to perform well in. Massive wins in the early games got us off to a great start. 8 goals from Hanger, 7 from Allen and great games from Tayles, O’Shea, Kyle, Bailey Smith and Sam Schaede were amongst the early highlights from these games. After a great early goal from Patto, the seniors, then slipped behind in the first quarter. After regrouping at 1/4 time we then improved and took it right up to Pearcedale. We failed however to keep the consistency of effort where it needed to be to get over the line. Peracedale were strong throughout. It was a frustrating, and nailbiting end to the game as both sides peppered the goals. In the end we went down by 4 points. A brilliant first up game from Josh Dormer, and superb games and efforts from Patto and Boof all day were stand out highlights for Langy. Murphy who kicked 4, along with Kieran were strong forward targets. Sponsor of the Week: We would like to thank the guys at Super Groups for their sponsorship and support of our club in season 2018. Go Langy !

Back home at BMK Oval today and we welcome Hastings after 2 weeks on the road Last week was a mixed bag with the Unders getting the job done to go 3-0 with a convincing win, the 12pm game was another solid performance with the Development squad getting their 1st win for the year and netball won A&B with Dromana taking the other games. The seniors were slow starters going in to the main break 6-7 goals down before fighting back to within a goal late in the 3rd then slipping in the last. Big congrats to Michael Burke for winning the Anzac Medal to add the his extensive trophy collection - a more derserving recipient you would be very hard pressed to find Welcome today to our 1988 Reserves and 1998 U18 premiership players for their reunions - will put on a big show for you today Socially we’ve got a few big events coming up with the Comedy Night next Sat - see NicT ASAP for tix; also coming up is our Seafood Lunch on May 26 Shout out to the ladies doing meals every Thursday - we reckon this week will see the 1000th meal served this season! Crib Point U19’s continued on with their winning form last weekend snatching victory from an impressive Rye outfit. A tight contest all day saw the demons take a short lead into the final change but that didn’t stop the magpies hitting back. A 3 goal to nil final term saw our boys run over the demons by 9 points. Aaron Whitford was best afield. This week promises to be a belter as our U19’s (who are undefeated) come up against an undefeated Red Hill on their home turf. It was a different story for our reserves this week. A dirty day saw them go down by 81 points against Rye. Scoring opportunities were few and far between as the ball migrated to the Demons half for the majority of the game. New recruits Leon Mateariki & Tristan Rosario showed they

are exciting prospects for the club going forward despite the loss. A relatively young side will look to re-group this week when they come up against the hill men. Perfect conditions provided a great platform for our seniors to thrive last weekend. Unfortunately, it wasn’t to be. A slow start from both teams saw them reach the half time siren on an even keel. A third term let down saw Rye extend a short lead out to 4 goals at the final break. Rye finished the day 6 goals ahead. Harri Dekleuver, Jarrod Fisk and Febricko Addi stepped up for their first game for the club, proving there is plenty of youth to look forward to in coming years. Next week the side will be looking to get on the winner’s board. Go Crib Point!

Hastings

Not a great day for the Football Club, with us losing two out of three games. The under 19,s were probably the better side on the day but somehow managed to find themselves on the wrong side of the scoreboard, but a positive is these boys are getting better each week, and with a good attitude and some good coaching will see these boys back on the winners list very soon. The Reserves were like the under 19’s were also the better side on the field and like the under 19.s looked like they were not going to get the chocolates, and starting the last quarter 5 goals down, they certainly didn’t have the odds in their favour, but with some great tackling quick ball movement, and accurate kicking they managed to kick 7 goals to their opponents one, and get up and win a great game by two points, a fantastic performance from the whole team. The senior team was a bit disappointing, our boys just were not ready to go at the start of the game, Chelsea were hard at it and their pressure was first class, and we just could not go with them which saw us 37 points down at the first change, from there it was an even contest with Hastings winning the last 3 quarters by 12 points, unfortunately not enough to get the job done, we must be ready to go from the first bounce against these good teams. What a great game of football for the Seniors last week, winning the Bushman’s Cup. It was even better that we played for the 4 points. The pressure was on. The crowd was roaring. It was exciting stuff. Congratulations to Tom Mitchell for winning the ANZAC medal. It was a good effort with the boys putting in their all with no bench due to unfortunate injuries. Fingers crossed for the boys recovery. It was great to see so many past players and families down at Tractor Park. This type of day is great for local football. Thanks to the ladies who attended our annual Ladies Day raising much needed funds for the McGrath Foundation. Chelsea

Another road trip last week and extremely happy to report 2 from 3, close but no cigar ! / The unders got on the board in fine style and full credit to all concerned. This process started in October and the effort as been massive. Great games from Tristan, Piddy, Jake, Aust’y & Dibba. Huge thanks to Brad for your words of encouragement after the game and congrat’s to Dan, more to come mate. The 2’s were in control most of the day and some how managed to let it slip, if there’s a positive they are young and i’m sure they will learn from it. Trippa getting better every week and was well supported by Drilla, Corey, Chuck and Gard’s. Great stuff from Andy Silva, back from injury and 6 Majors. Make amends this week Lad’s. The Seniors was just a cracking game of Footy, Our chargers started as well as I can

remember over a long period, The faithful were all smiles at the First break after we slammed on 7 goals. For the next 3 quarters we just stuck to the structures and held off a very competitive Hastings outfit. Have to mention Brain’y and Dave as these 2 blokes are coaching out of their skin at the moment and boy are the Troops turning up to play. Again to all our wonderful helpers, particually the ladies thanks heap’s because we couldn’t do it without you. Also to all that made the effort to get down to Hastings, that’s as good as an away crowd I have seen for years. Please keep turning up !! 2 Huge Home Games next 2 Saturday’s See you at the Gullery !!

Red Hill

Welcome to the Past Players day at the Hill. We also welcome Crib Point to the Hill today. The Past players are celebrating the foundations that have been laid and on which we continue to build a great club. We also take a moment to remember Graeme Emond who past away recently. Graeme was at the club from 1966-1980 (apart from 1970-1 at Crib Pt). Life Member 1980. 3 League B/F Awards in 2nd XVIII 1966-7 and 1973. Coached the twos 1966-7 and 1973-80. Six time Club B/F in twos. Today we also have the Presidents lunch in the club rooms. Graeme invites anybody who would like to join the Presidents lunch on home games to come along. Cost is $40.00 for a great meal. Let Kim or Graeme know if you want to come along. Winners are grinners in the football world last week. The Ones took the step up from last week and put together 4 solid quarters to come out on top. The Magoos continue to hold their form. Great to see some of the young guns stepping up to play important roles in the Ones and Twos. The U/19 just keep on keeping on with a dominant win over the Young Yabbies. Consistent pressure footy is the game plan that is working for Happy’s crew. Hate to be the nagging Goat, but memberships across all areas are now due. We need the bucks to keep the wheels in motion. Thanks to all those who help each week, and if you want to lend a hand on game day please let some one on the committee know. Remember we dont count the hands that are raised, but every hand counts. Footy Notes Devon Meadows

The Devon Meadows faithful descend on Lloyd Park today for the first time in many, many years. We come with our tail up after a big win down at Somerville last week - while Langy struggled in a close loss to Pearcedale. We only play Langy once this year, but win lose or draw let’s get in the rooms after the game for a beer and i’m sure they will look to reciprocate when we meet again next year. It’s the second leg of a 2 week road trip for us, so lets hope we can finish strong and head back home next week to face Red Hill with a spring in our step. Looking forward to getting back on home soil! Speaking of home soil - lets see everyone tonight back at Glover for the BOGAN BINGO function. Going to be a ripper night, Tommy and Em are doing a great job organising the functions this year so support them and support the club by getting down and contributing to a great atmosphere. The more people are in attendance the more fun we have! Dress code tonight is obviously BOGAN attire. Flanny’s, thongs, moccasins etc. Should

come naturally to 90% of us i would have thought, so just dress in your normal gear i guess. Also, tickets are flying out the door for the Comedy Night which is fast approaching. July 7th, $30 per ticket or organise your table of 10 for $250. We’ve said it a thousand times always a great night get your tickets soon or miss out! GO MEADOWS!

Netball Preview Bullettes ready to fire By David Nagel The only game involving two last-start winners takes place at Karingal this afternoon where the Bullettes welcome Hastings for the round-four Match of the Day. Both teams were fresh last week, Karingal having a week off in round two against Rye, while Hastings also sat one out after the heavens closed in and caused its game against Tyabb to be postponed. But both teams made the wait worthwhile last weekend. Karingal coach Jess Whitfort had a long-fortnight to endure after her Bullettes went down unexpectantly to Langwarrin in round one. That form is starting to stack up okay, but the Bullettes aren’t too accustomed to losing games and were keen to bounce back hard against Dromana last week. But it took a half of netball to shake the Tigers off! The Bullettes led 22-18 at half time before a 13 goal to three third quarter secured their first win of the season. Abuk Kenyang and Madi Capsalis provided strong options in attack, taking advantage of some great play from Bridgett Barry-Murphy, Courtney Osborne and Claudia Whitfort through the midcourt. And Amelia Haugen and Mardi Cunningham made life tough for Dromana’s goalers. The Bullettes opponent today, Hastings, overcame a slow start to get the better of Chelsea – 49-36 - last week. The Blues trailed by three at quarter time but had levelled the scores by the middle break and then scored 29-16 to win running away in the end. The Hosking sisters, Jess (C) and Sarah (WA), put their fitness to good use in the second half providing Armani Buskermolen (GS) and Helen-Margaret Ashin (GA) with plenty of scoring opportunities. Hayley Morton and Madelina Nyoul were defensive beasts for the Blues allowing Darcy Lambert (WD) to be a strong link-up player in the second half. Hastings can’t afford another slow start against the Bullettes who will be keen to make this the first of three wins before the interleague break on May 19. The Bullettes will make it two on the bounce! Tyabb will look to keep its unbeaten record intact when it hits the road to take on Chelsea at Chelsea. The Yabbies were super-impressive against Red Hill last week, upping the ante after quarter time for a 66-26 victory. The Yabbies received great drive from Anzac Medallist Sarah Hose (WD), while Keira Wills (GA) and Birgitta Nemaric (GS) found their range and will be tough to stop for the Seagulls this afternoon. Chelsea will be keen to bounce back after last week’s loss to Hastings and will need Lisa Donnellan, Verona Kaitani and Katja Jansen to play at their best to stop the

Jess Hosking was sensational against Chelsea last week and will be looking for another huge performance against Karingal.

impressive Yabbies from getting away on the scoreboard. The Seagulls will give it their all – but it’s Tyabb to win in the end. Langwarrin will look to keep pace with the other top teams in the competition when the Kangaroos host Devon Meadows at Lloyd Park. Sara Drain and her girls have done nothing wrong at this stage of the season, winning all three games including that high-quality round-one shootout against Karingal. That was the win that made us all stand up and take notice. Langy was ruthless against Pearcedale last week in a 69-15 victory that showed the Kangas are keen to go all the way this year. Emily Bennet (GS) and Jayde Travers (GA) were unstoppable under the ring, while Sarah Anderson and Amy Slefendorfas gave Drain some great support through the middle. Lucy Hoogenboom, Shannon Gill and Natalie Fallon have been strong for Devon Meadows this year, but even their best won’t be enough to stop the Kangaroos from having a four-zip start to the season. In other games, Crib Point should be too strong for a Georgia Vines led Red Hill at the Showgrounds, while Somerville and Pearcedale lock horns at Jones Road. Somerville opened its account last week after a tough start to the season against Dromana and Crib Point and will go in confident of back-to-back wins. Jaimee Peney (GK) was a worthy Anzac Medallist against Devon Meadows last week and will once again lead the way from the back of the court – if that makes sense! Maddi Peney, Briony Kelly and Sara Tanner have also been important for the Eagles this year, and will overcome the best of Alannah Quint, Louise Lane and Tara Monshing to get over the top of the Dales. Dromana has the bye.

Guava Hair and Body B Grade

Great job by our 17’s last week against a very well oiled Dromana team. The girls held their heads high & never gave up throughout the trialing of positions& match ups & can only build on and improve each week. D grade came out hungry to add another 4 points to the ladder but Dromana had other ideas. In a battle of the defence ends with fearless leader Bec’s turnovers and intercepts galore, but our attack end was unable to convert at the critical moments leading to a disappointing 9 goal loss. C grade suffered a loss this week to an aggressive Dromana, with poor accuracy allowing Dromana to slowly push out their lead. The girls fought hard in defence to keep providing opportunities but the girls were unable to convert leading to our first loss of the season.B grade dominated today from start to finish with stellar performances from our attack end. Anna & Amy were lightning through the mid court & the defensive end never stopped delivering turnovers to give the girls a healthy lead at half time. This allowed our young players to step up & play out the Second half without missing a beat finishing with a 20 goal win.A grade, desperate to bounce back from a close loss against Langwarrin came out strong against the Tigers, with young gun Abuk providing a solid target in GS. Abuk played most of the game 2 on 1 against Dromanas solid defence end but clever use of the mids and a dynamic GA Madi to open up space allowed the bullettes to capitalise. A solid 20 goal win! GO BULLETTES!!

Langwarrin Another Fantastic effort ladies, we showed great support for our fellow teammates and played with great determination. Alltech Under 17’s Again great work girls, unfortunately the score didn’t go our way but you showed that langy spirit and never gave up. Make sure you use this time to learn from your coach and I’m sure if you do the wins will come.

Killed it! Again everybody played their part and it showed on the scoreboard. This team is beginning to gel extremely well and what we are seeing on court is amazing. The mixture of young and experience is an exciting thing to watch. Southern Cross Podiatry A Grade Just like B grade, killed it! A big win is always great but you guys definitely showed no mercy today! Very similar to B grade in the way the game played out. Keep up the great work! Thanks again to all the support off the court aswell today! Everyone who scored, umpired, stuck around and supported Look forward to taking on Devon Meadows at home next week. Go Roos

Red Hill

As the fog cleared from the hill it turned into the perfect day for our first home game of this season. Our U 17’s had their last bye for the season and were invaluable in other grades today. D grade had a magnificent win and the smiles showed how happy you all were to hang on, one goal is all you need! Continue this form & reap the rewards as you improve every week . C grade had a solid game showing our fitness strength & versatility! Always strong Tyabb provided a tough environment for our attackers whilst a strong defence provided same environment for our opposition. Although going down by 6 goals our focus on turnovers this week has improved. B grade were determined to win this round and every little effort ensured the lead was held till the final siren! With a physical game , our girls all stepped up & showed the strength required to take the points.

The Nail Warehouse D grade

A grade welcomed Tyabb to the shed this week and fell short in many areas. It was a disappointing loss and show how vital it is that we begin to convert possession into goals. Our young team will continue to develop and find consistent positions on court.

Great win girls, again you guys showed fierce determination and made it was very hard for the people to the votes, everyone had a role to play today and you all executed it to the plan.

Special thanks again goes to all our U/17s for playing up! We are truly fortunate to have a high standard of youngsters in our club- an exciting future for the Red & White.

Peninsula Mechanical Services C Grade Well deserve win. Fought hard for it, but a great result. Controlled the play all day. Make sure that you all back yourself on court and trust not only yourselves but your teammates aswell!! Really good win

Netball Notes Crib Point Celebrating the 103rd anniversary of ANZAC day this round, Crib Point hosted Rye in what was a glorious near perfect day for netball. The sun was out and not a breath of wind. Our U/17 girls kicked our day off but unfortunately not with a win going down by 36pts. However, we have seen them significantly improve and gel more as a team over the last few weeks. BOC went to Lily who played a great game in goals. D Grade came out strong and played a very controlled game reflecting their efforts at training. The girls had great ball movement and played to win sealing a comfortable victory over Rye 37–12. BOC went to Kerrie for her defensive pressure. C Grade continued their good form winning 49–31. With lots of positional changes throughout the day the girls adapted quickly, applied full court pressure and fitness was a standout difference. Well done to Tarryn for playing her first game up and BOC went to Ellyce for her phenomenal feeds and ball control. B grade had a very positive vibe on the court, bouncing back after last week, winning 48–27. The whole team really stepped up this week especially our goalers, which was reflected in their match play. The girls will need to maintain their focus and quality of their netball performance moving into today’s match against Red Hill, which will be another big test. BOC went to our Anzac day Medalist Holly Dobson for her sustained hard work in goals. Our A Grade girls had a bye last week and are raring to go. Good luck & GO CRIBBY!!!

Tyabb What an incredible effort by D grade! Down by 9 goals going into the last & to come away with a 1 goal loss left the girls feeling like winners. Once again our whole court defensive pressure caused many turnovers & the girls are getting better at using the ball in tight finishes. Mikayla was our player of the day playing disciplined, team netball.

A grade were able to build consistently across each quarter of the match, showing some excellent defensive pressure and some fantastic attacking plays. Our intensity was there for most of the match & it was pleasing to see many different combinations working together. Congratulations to Hosey who was awarded the ANZAC Medal on the day #nipnip

Chelsea

A grade came out firing in the first quarter last week. Everyone stepped up knowing the talent we were facing. Verona starred through the centre and Katja was a perfect match for her attacker. It was a tough fight but the super fit Hastings side looked like a well oiled machine, taking the 4 points. B grade showed much spirit also. Hayley was a strong leader bringing the ball down the court and into goals. Tara was best on court keeping her tall goaler under wraps; she absolutely killed it in defence! We had an injury scare in the fourth, losing our speed through the centre. We fought hard but didn’t quite get the win, losing a tough battle by 2. C grade were pumped last week. We came out with an explosive opening quarter leading 14-1 at first break. Andrea ran hard in centre all game providing great strength and voice all the way down the court. We were able to keep the intensity up all game and were very happy to come away with the win. Our defence was amazing, forcing many held balls with some excellent over the shot pressure. After a slow start, our D girls broke away to record their second win of the season. The girls worked as a team and used the ball effectively down the court to beat Hastings by 23 points. Awatea and Georgia worked tirelessly in defence all game continuously taking intercepts and rebounds. We showed great positivity and team spirt especially when new recruit Jordyn scored her first goal. The girls should be very proud of their efforts.

The C grade team continued to build on their consistent performances with a great 4 quarter effort to come out winners by 6 goals. Nat once again dominated through the mid court & provided great feeds all game to the goalers. Hannah’s movement in GS opened up the goal circle beautifully & Darcey was able to provide a steadying influence in the centre to get the girls over the line in the final quarter. B grade showed a lot of fight in their match this weekend against a tough opponent. We showed in patches what we are capable of, however, weren’t able to pull that together for a full 60 minutes which cost us in the end. Madi had an outstanding match in WA & she led the attack end superbly through many drives & attacking options. We will be looking to bounce back against Chelsea this week!

Devon Meadows

Whilst our Anzac Day spirit on court was something to be proud of last week, our U17s were the only ones able to walk away with a win - a ripper of a first win may we add! A Grade Our focus this week was on our possession - to work the ball through court accurately. Patience payed off & we were rewarded. A tough physical game as Somerville was hungry for the ball. With 7 goals down, we dug deep and worked together; playing for each other we held the ball to win the half. Going into the forth, we gave everything and held our own. 3 goals down we continue to build both on and off the court. Looking forward to round 4, bringing those focuses all together! BOC: Alana McDonald. B Grade We always knew that it was going to be a tough week facing Somerville away, the girls started slow but to their credit they worked hard in the second converting turn overs and reducing the margin. The third quarter saw our goalers shooting at 100% and at 3/4 time the margin was just 8 & the game seemed winnable. In the last we were undisciplined, unable to make changes off the bench & we let the score blow out which was really disappointing given our first 3 quarters. Award - Mrs Redenbach, a great effort out in GA, for your effort in doing the work outside the ring and your shooting % - thanks for coming back from your honeymoon to play. An honourable mention to Jess F for being such a legend about not being able to take the

court. Looking forward to getting all 8 players back out there on court this week & rewarding the effort with the 4 points! C Grade Last weeks focus after two nail biting games was on “the winning feeling”. The girls started well with scores level at the first break. In the 2nd qtr Somerville got on top of us, with their strong pressure. The girls however didn’t give up, winning the last quarter off the back of good movement in the goal ring and strong rebounds in defence. It wasn’t our day, however an exciting sign once we start to get our rhythm together for 4 quarter. Bring on this week! BOC: Elyse who worked hard in defence all game. D Grade Round 3 up against Somerville, one of the strongest teams in the league. The girls took the first quarter to settle into their positions and calm the nerves as Sommy took a strong lead. However, from the second quarter the girls came out fighting and went down by a mere 5 goals in the end. The ball flow down the court was strong, allowing great movement in our goaling circle. A lot of positives from this game as we work towards getting a win on the board. BOC: Ciarra, gave it her all and fought hard till the end. U17s Our first win for the season against Crib point for the 17s. We had a chance to consolidate our shooting and attack end while varying the defence end to continue to develop our depth of combinations. Caitlyn Browne fed strongly into the ring while Georgia McHarg shot well and backed up with strong defensive pressure from Jess Piper. Looking forward to seeing this again, and more to come! Well done girls! Proudly Sponsored by Coast 2 Coast Building Services

The weather was perfect for a bit of netty in Round 3. With a tough ANZAC round taking on Devon, we were happy to come away with a well deserved clean sweep, with the girls fighting hard to win the chocolates. D Grade – With a lot of pressure on their shoulders, and a few key names players missing, the girls maintained stability and positivity, resulting in a hard earned win.

www.aflsoutheast.com.au

Netball Notes Overall it was a fantastic team effort from all the girls. C Grade – A traditionally a tough battle against Devon, the girls maintained composure and came away with the win. The first win of the season has sent the girls on the hunt for another win today against the Dales. B Grade – With a few different combinations being explored in the B grade, we were excited to see the success that came with the amazing flexibility this team has. With another win under their belt, B Grade are well on their way to the ‘4 peat’. A Grade – With the score leaving not much room to move, the girls had their work cut out for them. The girls stayed focussed, kept heads up and through this, came away with the first win of their 2018 campaign. The win came with a cost, losing Tayla to a ruptured achillies. We wish you the speediest of recoveries and are sure we will still see you maintaining your tan even with a cast/ moonboot. Today we take on Pearcedale in the battle of the postcode. 4 from 4 is the ultimate goal and our form in Round 3 is showing promise for this to be achieved today. Good luck everyone! #Brrrk

Hastings

Remembering the Anzac’s with a moving ceremony delivered by the Hastings RSL to start the A grade netball match. A great day out against Chelsea on the weekend for our A Grade team. A couple of strong contributors joining the line up for their first time this season made a noticeable difference. We welcome newcomer Helenmargret “Bubba” Ashin to the team and welcomed back Hayley Morton from injury. Hayley combined beautifully with Madelina in defence, picking off a number of timely intercepts, while Bubba teamed with the Hosking twins and Armani in the goal circle to convert opportunities. B grade had a fantastic arm wrestle with Chelsea. We started strongly getting away to a good lead at the start of the first quarter. For the next three quarters the lead changed many times. The defensive pressure was enormous from both sides. In the end Hastings rose at the right time with a fantastic last quarter performance from one of under 17 players Tilly Strange, shooting 4 from 4 goals to seal the win. Tough game for C grade this week with a quality Chelsea team proving much too sturdy. Hastings defense held strong and offered some great turnovers. Positive for C game were a determined team who will keep working hard for each other. Best on court was Keely. D grade started strong scoring the first 4 goals of the game. The girls were in for a fight against a well drilled Chelsea side but unfortunately got over run in the end.

All Jets Grounded at Shepley Oval… The Dandenong Southern Stingrays have come away with a massive 126-point win over the Western Jets played in perfect conditions at Shepley Oval on Sunday. After spending the first three weeks away, the Stingrays rolled out the green carpet for their first home game for the season, with the ground in magnificent condition. The Stingrays started hot and relished early momentum with great forward pressure and sound defensive setups not allowing the Jets any clean ball movement with the first goal to Bailey Schmidt. The Jets tried getting some run and carry out of the back half picking up plenty of disposals early, but the Stingrays were able to withstand the pressure and were able to use the ball cleanly wherever they wanted to, leading to a second Stingrays goal to Riley Bowman. Zac Foot played his best game for the year, promoting plenty of run and carry from half back and using the ball very well giving the forwards the best chance to convert. He was supported tremendously by 19-year-old Jake Frawley who is relishing his part-time role as a midfielder. The dominance continued throughout the second quarter for the Stingrays as they were able to run the ball out of defensive 50 without any pressure. First-game players Sam DeKoning and Billy Geurts grew comfortable in their roles and with support from Jai Taylor and Jamie Plumridge were clean and efficient coming off half back giving the rolling Stingrays forwards many chances to convert, which they did. At the long break the Stingrays extended their margin to a massive 63 points. The players and staff worked the magnets with many players in the back half finding themselves in new rolesone notable change was seeing 198cm Riley Bowman given an opportunity to play as a midfielder, something that would scare many opposition teams with the very tall Stingrays finding another gem who can play multiple roles. At the last break the Stingrays had slightly extended the margin to 77 points, extending the margin with an 8.1 to 0.0 final term. Stingrays TAC Cup Coach Craig Black was delighted on the way the players took control of the game early to set the tone for the day.

70

“We challenged the group to control the controllable’s on Tuesday night, and again Thursday, I think our first half was the best display we’ve shown so far this year,“ Black said. “It’s always nice being back at Shepley, we have a very good record here and that’s a challenge we set each year not to be beaten at home. Spending the first three weeks on the road has been tough, but the TAC Cup country teams do that each week- it builds character.” “What we spoke to the group about since pre-season isn’t about who is getting games, kicking the goals and being named in the best…it’s about when it’s your turn and you’ve been given the opportunity to put on the Stingrays jumper. “When you do you play the role your expected to play for the team. For the second week in a row we’ve had 13 individual goal kickers, players playing multiple roles and this week three-debutant players wearing a Stingrays jumper for the first time and that’s what we are measuring more than the big win.” This week will see Dandenong once again take to the road, playing The Oakleigh Chargers at Warrawee Park, Oakleigh on Saturday 1.45pm. Both teams had convincing wins in round 4, with the Chargers easily accounting for the Bendigo Pioneers by 70 points last Friday night in Bendigo giving them the extra two days in recovery. The day also saw the Dandenong Stingrays host the Northern Territory versus Tasmania AFL NAB Division 2 Championships game, with Dandenong Stingrays/ Rosebud Football Club players Matthew and Stephen Cumming having the opportunity to represent NT. Stephen continued his hot form being named best on ground for the second week in a row, whilst not to be outdone - Matt was named second best. Matt and Stephen have three games to go for NT before returning to the Stingrays, which would scare many opposition clubs with abundance of height, speed and grunt to manage. Dandenong Stingrays 6.5 11.7 18.10 26.11.167 Western Jets 1.2 2.4 6.5 6.5.41 Dandenong Stingrays Goals: Bailey Williams 7, Zac Foot 3, Riley Bowman 3, Bailey Schmidt 2, Corey Ellison 2, Lachlan McDonnell 2, James Hickey 2, Sam De Koning, Jeremy Burton, Dan Frampton, Jamie Plumridge, Reid Nanscawen. Best Players: Bailey Williams, Lachlan McDonnell, Zac Foot, Jake Frawley, Jake Carosella, William Hamill.
