AFL South East Finals fever just around the corner

The stage is set for a massive five-week carnival of sport after the naming of host venues for this year’s Mornington Peninsula Nepean Football League (MPNFL) finals series. Frankston Park will once again become the field of dreams for footballers across the Peninsula, hosting grand finals in division one and two, while the netball deciders will be played at Somerville and the FDNA courts at Jubilee Park. A delegation of AFL South East officials, headed by AFLSE Leagues Manager Shaun Connell, including Football Operations Manager Haydn Parsons, Netball Operations Manager Sam Downie, Women’s Operations Manager Rod Hamilton and Region Director of Umpiring Carl Fletcher, inspected venues from one end of the Peninsula to the other, working closely with a Finance Sub-Committee to deliver the best possible outcomes for participants, clubs and supporters from right across the region. The finals proposal was ticked off on Thursday 12 July by the Finance Sub-Committee appointed by the clubs to review the costs associated with running the finals series. Connell said AFLSE received six applications from clubs to host this year’s finals. “There were many factors for the management team to consider when deciding on the host venues for this year’s finals series,” Connell said. “Obviously it’s the biggest and best time of the year and I believe we’ve got the balance right, in presenting

quality venues and respecting the club’s feedback of preserving the exciting atmosphere of the football-netball environment synonymous with the MPNFL. “We’re blessed to have such great facilities across the length and breadth of the Peninsula, and I think we’re set for one of the most exciting and memorable finals series on record. “Due to the divisional structure, clubs that haven’t experienced the cut and thrust of finals football and netball will be in the spotlight again, and that’s fantastic for those clubs in particular.” One of the great highlights of this year’s finals series will take place at Hastings on Saturday 25 August, where the division two second semi-finals in football will be complemented by the netball preliminary finals, and also the preliminary finals of South Eastern Women’s Football (SEWF). The SEWF semi-finals will take place at Beaconsfield on Sunday 19 August, with the grand finals to be played at the same venue, Holm Park Reserve, on Saturday 1 September. 2018 MPNFL FINALS DATES AND VENUES MPNFL Division One Week 1 - Saturday, 25 August Elimination Final Chelsea Sunday, 26 August Qualifying Final Mornington Netball Semi-Finals Mornington Week 2 - Saturday, 1 September First Semi-Final Chelsea Sunday, 2 September Second Semi-Final Mornington Netball Preliminary Final Mornington Week 3 - Sunday, 9 September Preliminary Final Frankston Park Netball Grand Final FDNA Week 4 - Sunday, 16 September Grand Final Frankston Park MPNFL Division Two Week 1 - Saturday, 18 August Qualifying Final Somerville Netball Semi-Finals Somerville Sunday, 19 August Elimination Final Rye Week 2 - Saturday, 25 August Second Semi-Final Hastings Netball Preliminary Final Hastings SEWF Preliminary Final Hastings Sunday, 26 August First Semi-Final Rye Week 3 - Saturday, 1 September Preliminary Final Somerville Netball Grand Final Somerville Week 4 - Saturday, 8 September Grand Final Frankston Park

AFL Vic Country Love the Game Round This weekend the Victorian football community is encouraging fans to love the game, not the odds, as part of the 2018 Love the Game Round from July 20-22. AFL Victoria, in partnership with the Victorian Responsible Gambling Foundation, is showing its support for the ‘Love the Game’ campaign via the annual dedicated Love the Game Round involving all 10 Victorian AFL clubs, our state league competitions, 23 community Leagues and clubs around the state. United by a passion for the game, the aim of the round is to remind fans and players alike that sport and betting don’t have to go together, despite the significant amount of advertising that has become part of the sporting landscape. During this year’s round, parents and other influential adults are being encouraged to talk to the kids in their life about the risks and potential harms associated with sports betting so that they can develop a more balanced, realistic understanding of how gambling works. Held from July 20-22, the dedicated round will also assist participating community and state leagues to educate clubs on creating safe and healthy environments for members to understand the risks involved with the increased normalisation of gambling in the community. A key activation this weekend will be centred on Saturday’s Round 16 Peter Jackson VFL game between Williamstown and Footscray at Williamstown Football ground, with the match hosting a Family Day including a host of children’s activities such as inflatables, face painting, halftime grid games and more. AFL Victoria CEO Steven Reaper said with the increasing exposure to sports betting advertising, the Love the Game Round is an important reminder to football supporters about what really matters. “AFL Victoria understands the importance of protecting our kids and we will encourage clubs to focus on the love of the game, not the odds, not just this weekend but every round of the season,” Reaper said.

“By celebrating this round across the Victorian football community, we can influence players at every level of the game.” The Foundation’s acting CEO, Craig Swift, said in an environment that is saturated with sports betting advertising, we have a responsibility to inform kids about gambling risks and how to avoid gambling harm. “The Love the Game Round serves as a good reminder to adults that sport and betting don’t have to go together, and to share with the kids in their life the many things they love about footy that have nothing to do with the odds,” Swift said. “It’s easy to overlook the fact that children born in this millennium have not experienced sport without betting, which makes it even more important that we equip them to make informed choices about gambling as adults, to avoid gambling harm or, if harm does occur, to recognise it and seek support. “Being part of a footy team is as much about social connectedness and having a sense of community wellbeing, as it is about competition. That’s why we love the game, not the odds.” For more information, visit lovethegame.vic.gov. au or join in the conversation on social media using #LoveTheGame.

Footy Preview - Division 1 A tremble to turn into aftershocks By David Nagel

A round that has already sent trembles through the lower reaches of the MPNFL Division One ladder could develop into a full-scale, mid-table, earth-quake by 5pm this afternoon. Positions two to seven on the ladder lock horns in one of the great rounds of footy for the season, one that we will all look back on as the launching pad for a terrific last month of home-and-away footy. Seriously, it’s difficult to know where to start! But some games just have a really good feel to them and the contest between Pines and Frankston promises to be an absolute beauty at Eric Bell Reserve. The Pythons, the highest scoring team in the competition, take on the Bombers, the most frugal of the top five, in a game that has massive ramifications for both clubs. We all know it’s very difficult to win a premiership from fourth or fifth on the ladder, but the winner of this contest catapults themselves into the rarefied air of a genuine topthree contender. And for the loser, well last year’s grand finalists Frankston YCW (6th) and Bonbeach (7th) have a whiff of September now and will start to close in fast. Pines bounced back to the winners list in impressive fashion last start, downing Rosebud by 52 points after hard-to-take losses against Edi-Asp and Mt Eliza. Those losses hurt, but what they did do was highlight just how competitive the Pythons are against the best teams in the competition. But only at their best, and only when they put together four quality quarters of football. The Pythons were dead-set stiff against the Eagles, losing by a point, but the last-quarter fadeout against the Redlegs, at Eric Bell, was surprising, given the Pythons combative nature for three quarters. They led at every change – but wilted when it mattered most. The club’s leaders, rock-solid competitors like Paul Scanlon, Beau Hendry, Tim Bongetti and Aaron Edwards rectified the situation somewhat against the Buds – but know only their best footy will get the job done against the Bombers today.

Despite the efforts of Damien Rayson, Seaford now looks destined for relegation. Beau Muston and his boys have been super-impressive this year. Corey Micari has given his all in the ruck, while Ben Northover and Ryan Marks-Logan have been wonderful contributors in defence. Does Northover go deep on Edwards, or a kick from goal on Bongetti…there are plenty of unanswered questions heading into this one. Jason Kingsbury, Dale Sutton, Jake Greeley and Zac Longham will be key players for the Bombers, while Jarrad Grant will need to be very closely monitored by Paddy Swayn and co. This is a massive contest for both clubs…an early final if you like to separate the contenders from pretenders as we head into the pointy end of the season. This really is a flip-of-the-coin job…but we’ll go for the Pythons to finish strongly and win by 11 points.

Footy Preview - Division 1 Is the greatest roller-coaster ride to a premiership in MPNFL history still on the cards – or has Frankston YCW done too much damage to its season and is now a spent force in 2018? It’s still the biggest question in the MPNFL right now, but one that will become a hell of a lot clearer after the Stonecats take on second-placed Edithvale-Aspendale at Jubilee Park today. Let’s just reflect for a minute. The Stonecats won their opening six games, including a round-one belting of Sorrento, but have secured just two premiership points since – and that was in a shortened game against bottom-placed Seaford. It’s been a remarkable fall from grace from one of the truly great footy clubs of recent times. The Stonecats have had to adjust to a long injury list, and the unavailability of some key players due to VFL duties, but have fallen rung by rung to eventually slip outside the top five. They need to rebound, and need to rebound fast! The funny thing is they haven’t been that bad of late, losing their last two games by six and three points against Frankston and Bonbeach. And those two games followed a cracking contest against Sorrento, and the early-end against the Tigers. They just need that one big win, against a genuine contender, and the Stonecats could quite easily get their swagger back. Just imagine if they roll the Eagles today! Players like Jie Coghlan, Kyle Hutchison, Byron Barry and Macklin Raine would gain so much confidence from a win, as would the likes of Michael Debenham, Christian Ongarello, Jack Mazurek and Lachie Street, the core players to have stood tall amongst a solid stream of injuries this year. They just need to get that spring back in their step – and what better way to do it than against the Eagles. Graeme Yeats and his boys have been super-consistent this season, not dominating opponents but doing the right things at the right times to secure four points on a constant basis. Chris Wylie and Nick Connellan have been workhorses in the ruck while Sam Monaghan has been one of the most consistent midfielders in the competition since making the switch from Noble Park. Brett Dore is still warming up to his best, while Michael Bussey and Brent Bowden are two key forwards the Stonecats will need to watch very closely today. Ongarello, widely regarded as the best defender in the league, will be spoilt for choice when he makes his way into the defensive 50 this afternoon. All the form would suggest that Edi-Asp win this one. They have talent all over the park and a burning belief that if things get tight, their structures will hold up under pressure. Expect a massive effort from the Stonecats – but it’s the Eagles by 13 points.

8

Bonbeach has turned around its fortunes in recent times and will look to continue that trend when the Sharks welcome a rebounding Mt Eliza to Cannes Avenue today. Steve Hughes and his team had a choice to make after round nine, to either pack up tools after a 103-point loss to Pines or to dig deep and show the resilience of a club that played off in a grand final last year. Thankfully, for both the Sharks and the competition in general, they responded in a positive fashion. It’s actually difficult to comprehend that just one game could separate these two teams at the completion of this round. The Redlegs have been a genuine double-chance contender for the best part of the season while the Sharks’ status as a division one participant was in serious doubt just two starts back. But the Sharks have bounced back stylishly, banking consecutive wins against Frankston YCW and Sorrento to reinvigorate their season. They have a poor percentage, so can’t afford any slip ups, but win this and they are right back in finals contention. The return of champion mid-forward Shane McDonald has coincided with the Sharks two best wins for the season, while the form of Gavin Vassallo, Gary Carpenter, Owen Hulett and Matt Douglas has made the Sharks difficult to score against in recent times. Mt Eliza will test that form today. They have a potent front half that will be keen to hit the scoreboard after being restricted against Mornington last time out. The Redlegs had the ideal chance to consolidate third position, but were consigned to a one-point loss as Bulldogs’ mentor Simon Goosey coached at his defensive best. Jordan Moncrieff and James Freeman will look to break free of those shackles, while Daniel Gormley, James Hammond and Blain Coates will look to provide plenty of drive through the midfield. But it’s the Sharks to continue their resurgence – this time with a stirring two-point victory. The colour purple will dominate the sporting landscape at Sorrento today when the Sharks and Mornington take part in a match dedicated to raising funds and awareness for Maddie Riewoldt’s Vision. Following her death in February 2015, Maddie Riewoldt’s Vision was founded by the Riewoldt family in June to raise funds to find new treatments for Bone Marrow Failure. The Vision aims to ultimately find a cure for the syndromes that effect younger Australians each year. It promises to be a special day at Sorrento, with Jack and Nick Riewoldt joining former Carlton sharp-shooter Brendan Fevola for a Meet-and-Greet with the fans, with a photo and autograph session to take place between 12.15 and 1.15pm, ahead of the big game between the Sharks and the Bulldogs at 2pm. Sorrento has had two weeks to reflect on a shock loss to Bonbeach; a loss that won’t stop the Sharks from finishing

www.aflsoutheast.com.au

Footy Preview - Division 1 top three but could hinder their chances of finishing top of the ladder and earning a crucial rest in the first week of the finals. The Sharks welcomed back premiership coach Troy Schwarze for his first game this season while James and Mitch Hallahan continued a sensational run of form that is sure to be capturing the attention of the MPNFL umpires this year. And Chris Dawes, Leigh Poholke, Nick Corp and Luke Tapscott are going to provide the Bulldogs’ back six with some nervous moments this afternoon. The Bulldogs will be breathing a lot more comfortably at the moment, with their one-point win over Mt Eliza, combined with Seaford’s one-point loss to Rosebud, basically consigning the Tigers to division two destinations next year. It’s such a fine line between failure and success in this league. Bulldogs’ coach Simon Goosey would have been sweating bullets about being relegated. There’s no way he would have envisaged starting the second year of his latest stint at the club in division two. The Bulldogs are worthy division one participants and would love nothing better than making it back-to-back wins against two of the better teams in the competition. Warwick Miller, Kalen and Broden Bird and Emilio Bitters have been in fine form of late and will need to produce their best to get the Doggies across the line. But it’s the Sharks to win by 28 points…and raise plenty of money for Maddie Riewoldt’s Vision along the way.

Footy Notes Frankston Bombers Aloha Bomber fans & welcome to another weekend football & netball adventure. This week we travel to Pines, a ground not visited recently by the red and black and some iphone directions may have been required. In fact the last time Frankston played here was a Sunday game back in 1992. The night prior to that game was a party to celebrate the engagement of our President and his much better half Sally. Time flies, Batty is much too old to play anymore but Ben & Chloe keep the family tradition going. We love that being part of the Bomber family sometimes involves family members. Your scribe is having trouble with maths; for both our seniors and under 19’s last week was a so called 8 point game against the Stonecats, another 8 point game for both sides today & guess what, next week against Bonbeach will be billed as an 8 point game. Don’t think they will give us 24 points if we win all three but good luck to our Bombers heroes as we love being part of this terrific competition. Get your diary out and put a big red circle around Friday 10th August when the Bombers Businessman’s Lunch will take centre stage. Enjoy the afternoon listening to Dane Swan sharing highlights of his great Collingwood career and unique views on life. As well as Swanny, thats Dane not Gary, there will be laughs aplenty from the Suburban Footballer Tom Steigert. These lunches are always a top shelf day and sell out and so grab your ticket today. Have a great day at the footy, cheer loud and Go Bombers.

Frankston YCW Welcome Edi-Asp FNC to John Coburn Oval for what promises to be 3 crucial games. **Congratulations Lachie Wallace Vic Country winner.** Last week we ventured up the road to Bomberland, fortunately there were no drownings reported! However the coast guard and lifesavers were on hand. In conditions resembling a perfect storm, we were able to get the chockies in one game. The unders were depleted due to a number of factors and with virtually no rotations available, were always under the pump, literally, in the second half. Josh Berenger, Andrew Chapman and Cal Gregory were best.

The two’s are gathering momentum and continue to develop a formidable team unity. Efficiency and accuracy are key ingredients in any conditions and that was displayed in spades on Saturday. Owen Vine, Angus McNab and Patrick Johnstone were best and off the 5 metre platform, Brendan Marchmont dived in for 3 sausage rolls. In the main game were we got off to a solid start, kicking against the tempest, we slotted a couple of valuable majors, and we were in it up to our necks. The game, reduced to a territory battle, meant that second and third efforts were mandatory. We had our noses in front during the second quarter and an early goal in the last saw us only a few points down. Despite our best efforts we were behind when it mattered most, going down by less than a straight kick for the second successive week. Byza shone on a dismal day, Wags and Sauce were relentless with their attack on the pill.

Sorrento It was a battle of the Sharks last time out in conditions more suited to penguins. Cold, wet and windy it was a day to get down and dirty, and the team that worked harder for longer would win. The Reserves continued their good form and got a good win and some handy percentage in an important win. The continued improvement through the season is building confidence and belief in the group. Only a betting man would put a ceiling on how far these boys can go, as they have a nice blend of youthful exuberance and professional old heads. After the bye it’s important we come out firing and continue our run of form. We have five games to fine tune and get ready for a finals campaign. The seniors went into the game as favourites but once again if you’re not on you’ll get found out. We give full credit to Bonbeach who came with a plan and executed beautifully. Although we battled hard, we were unable to find a way to get the job done which was disappointing. Sometimes we learn more from a loss so we’ll wait with much anticipation to see the response we get this week. We’ve got high expectations at Sorrento and it’s very rare this group disappoints 2 weeks in a row. It’s how we respond today that matters. Today is the Maddie Riewoldt Vision Charity Day game. Both Mornington FNC and AFLSE have been very cooperative in agreeing to the venue and jumper alterations to fit in with this day. Please give generously. Thought of the week: Do twins realise that one of them was unplanned!

Footy Notes Mornington After a week off the boys are raring to go again for another round of footy! A sweet victory last round with a one point win over our neighbours, Mt Eliza - you never should underestimate the under dog & especially our doggies. We led at every quarter and held on against the wind in the last to come home with the chocolates. Well deserved for the boys as this season they have worked hard every game and just haven’t been able to come home with the wins. We will be hoping to put on that type of pressure on top of the table Sorrento today. The Ressies were extremely undermanned with only 16 to take the field and the score reflected that. Hoping for a better contest & result today and hopefully a full team! No game for the unders this week as Sorrento don’t have 19’s. That gives them a 2 week break before the last few rounds. Against Mt Eliza the pups were outstanding in the first 2 quarters playing some good team footy leaving them only 2 goals down against the top of the table & undeafeated side of Mt Eliza. They battled hard in the last 2 but couldn’t produce the goods and in the end lost by 25 points. A big thanks to the 17’s from both Sth Mornington & Mornington who have been stepping up to the plate and playing some good footy. Good luck to all the teams today & Go Doggies!!

Smithy booted 3 in a best on ground display, whilst others in the best were Max, Beau, Coley, Doyle & Pagey. The Reserves were never threatened after kicking 3 goals to nil in the opening term, restricting the opposition to just 3 points at 1/2 time. More of the same followed as we finished with a 5 goal last term to win by 81. Chop on his 21st Birthday was dominant with 3, with others in the best being Max Rea, Stricko, Loges, Chips & Burgo in his comeback game. The Senior game saw the Dogs lead by 8 at 1/4 time & 3 at 1/2 time. We trailed by 5 at the last change and in a tough quarter fell short by the narrowest of margins. Missed opportunities throughout the game proved costly. Best were Gorms, Happy, Moncrieff, Lambie, Gilly & Coates. Congrats to Aaron Jackson on his Senior debut. The MEFNC will be fielding a Senior Women’s footy team in the SEWF comp in 2019. Calling for expressions of interest for Players, Officials & Volunteers. Mt Eliza Thanks to those who attended & those who participated in the Hypnotist Night last Saturday - A great night was had by all. To the footy a fortnight ago as we took on Mornington. After a sluggish start, the U/19’s booted 4 goals to nil in the 2nd to take control. A 5 goal to 3 last half saw the boys win by 25 points.

A big game this week should see us consolidate our top two position. Best players were M. Meehan, S. Monaghan, M. Bussey, B. O’Hanlon, B. Tagg, A. Macquire. The reserves scored again with a strong win and are 2 games clear in 4th spot on the ladder. Fitchy has the boys firing and they face the strong YCW this week. Best players were D. McCarthy, J.Watterson, L. Hulett, M. Byrnes, L. Busch. The 19’s were undermanned prior to the break and battled hard but couldn’t get the 4 points.A tough game this week but the boys will be back close to full strength and will be fired up to get the 4 points.Best players were B. Pines It has been rare in recent times for this club to have 3 football wins on the one day, so we should celebrate when this is the case. In atrocious conditions where supporter participation was well and truly tested Stella’s boys got their 6th win for the season and are once again sniffing the five. The reserves finished well to take the points for their 3rd win. The seniors played a smart game, and slip back into the five. Today we host the Frankston Bombers, something we haven’t done since 1985. With winter well and truly upon us we will have to find some sheltered spots, or increase the patronage of the ladies day event taking place inside the

South Eastern Women’s Football Things getting tight at the top By Lachie Ramage As we draw closer to the business end of the season it is starting to become a bit clearer as to who will feature in finals action this year. Going into the clash between Mornington and Chirnside Park it was expected that the Bulldogs would be victorious and continue to rise further up the ladder, but little did we know a hungry Panthers outfit would be right up for the challenge. The Bulldogs led at the first change by eight points but the Panthers came out in the second quarter and showed that they weren’t to be taken lightly, scores being level at half time. From there the Panthers pushed on to hold a five-point lead at three-quarter time. But the real surprise hit the Bulldogs in the fourth quarter when they were held scoreless, with the Panthers going on to claim a huge upset, victorious by 15 points. The Eastern Devils cruised to an easy victory over Beaconsfield, winning by 73 points, whilst Cranbourne had a relatively easy time of things in a 31-point win over the St Kilda Sharks. And Kelly Nelson played a blinder, kicking a goal in Port Melbourne’s 4.6.30 to 1.1.7 victory over Gippsland Maroons. Unfortunately Endeavour Hills had to forfeit its game against Seaford. In division two Seaford continued its great form, defeating Tyabb by 34 points, with Samantha Ryan the star, continuing her incredibly consistent season and claiming her third best on ground honours for the season. Eastern Devils had a cruisy day out against Warragul, victorious by 45 points, while Cranbourne managed to claim a victory against the winless Edi-Asp. The Eagles were challenged all day and eventually just held on by five points in a low scoring affair. And Bass Coast didn’t let anyone down as it continued its sparkling form, cruising to a 121-point win over St Kilda Sharks. Tayla Stahl-Smith continued on her brilliant form this season earning more best on ground accolades. In division three, Officer defeated Pakenham by 39 points in a game where the Kangaroos couldn’t really find a way to kick clear of the Lions, mainly due to inaccurate kicking. But a win is a win and the Kangaroos will be happy with the result. Karingal gave Hastings a huge scare, leading by seven points at three-quarter time and on the verge of causing a massive upset. But, as a top team should, the Blues found a way to drive on and find that extra gear to pull off a five point win in a thriller at Ballam Park.

Mornington had a strong win over Red Hill, where Renee Dunn booted five goals and was the star up forward in her side’s 74-point victory. Crib Point/Cerberus had a day out against Seaford in what was a crucial game, winning by 83 points and keeping the opposition scoreless in what was a spectacular performance. And Pearcedale prevailed in a tight contest against Frankston Bombers, saluting by 13 points after taking a six-point lead into the final quarter. Katie Mitchell and Harriet Duncan were key winners for the Panthers, booting a goal each and starring around the ground. PREVIEW In division one, the top team Seaford heads to Beaconsfield in a match that is vital for the Eagles if they have any aspirations of featuring in finals action this year. They simply must win this game, and whilst it is an extremely tough ask a win will give them great boost in confidence. In division two the Eastern Devils face Tyabb in a contest that is absolutely pivotal for ladder position; the winner will sit third on the ladder and be poised to finish the season off in style. In division three Hastings and Frankston Bombers face off in what looks set to be a huge clash, with Frankston looking to claim a major scalp and hand Hastings their first loss of the season. These are the sort of games that can make a season and don’t be surprised if there is an upset brewing at Thomas Barclay Oval. And Pakenham will play its first Saturday night homegame of the season against Pearcedale. The Lions have been big improvers of late and will look to push the Panthers to the limit on their own deck.

Pakenham had its moments but found Officer too strong at Starling Road in Division Three.

Netball Preview - Division 1 Four teams now with a shot at the title By David Nagel

The completion of round 14 has a lot to live up to today after Seaford and Rosebud played out one of the matches of the season at Linen House last week. The Buds have had some terrific results in recent times, but drawing 46-46 with the ladder-leaders and consolidating fourth place on the ladder has a real sense of achievement about it. The Buds gave away a five-goal lead at the first break, which stretched to six at half time, before scoring 27-21 in the second half to tie things up at the conclusion of a thrilling match. Nicole Hadgkiss recognised the danger at quarter time and made some key moves, replacing herself at goal attack with Emma White in a move that would have an instant impact. White went on to score 25 of the Buds 41 goals after the first break, including 10 in a hectic last term that went all the way down to the wire. Bethany Leach was another star for the Buds, moving to centre after quarter time to replace Millie McDermott who moved to wing attack. Seaford also had some terrific performers, with Kara Hargrave and Tracey Dell doing their level best to stop White, while Ash Mitchener and Alesina Toleafoa kept a steady hand to help their team to a handy two points. So where do the close ones come from today? Bonbeach has the chance to climb off the bottom of the ladder when the Sharks host Mt Eliza this afternoon. The Sharks had a tough day at the office at their last outing, going down 60-13 against a powerful Sorrento side. Michelle Edmondson, Sarah Gales, Zoe Summers and Allison Goss tried their best for the Beaches and will be keen to get the job done today. The Redlegs fell behind but had a strong second half against Mornington in round 13, with Samantha Silvester shooting the lights out in the second half. Carly Russo, Carly Webster and Jamie O’Hare will be super-keen for victory today and will lead the Redlegs to victory. Pines will look to join Frankston on three wins for the season when the two clubs collide at Pines. The Pythons were okay in the first half against Rosebud in round 13 but were outscored badly in the second half. Maddi Blackburn, Ash Boyle and Merinda Hale will look to bounce back to the winners list after their victory over Mt Eliza in round 12. Frankston can’t jump any higher than seventh place, but can drop down the ladder with just a one-game buffer over the Pythons, Mt Eliza and Bonbeach. Louise Brittain, Blair Anderson, Sarah Muston and Bev Ashauer will be protective of their position and should take home a three-goal victory over the Pythons today.

26

Sorrento should continue on its merry way when the Sharks welcome Mornington to the tip of the Southern Peninsula this afternoon. The Sharks have been really impressive this year with an influx of star performers, who have been great for the education of the younger players, taking the club to a new level. Shelley O’Donnell was one of the biggest names in Australian netball in her prime, with Danni Taylor also an elite performer. They are still playing the game at a high level, with Bec Kelly, Briana O’Hehir, Ash Gladman and Maddi Graham having the best seat in the house on a weekly basis. Mornington won’t play finals this year but will be keen to prove itself the next best team in the competition. Sarah Nash, Tess Haddock, Britt Archdeacon and Candace Page have been great players for the Bulldogs this year and would love to pull out a big performance today. But Sorrento will be too strong…by roughly 10 goals. And Edithvale-Aspendale will be out to claim top-spot on the ladder when the Eagles travel to Jubilee Park to take on Frankston YCW. The Eagles earned their shot at top place with a great win over Seaford, with Michelle Sanders and Nicole Taylor defending like there was no tomorrow. The Eagles normally produce their best from this point in the year, meaning the Stonekittens will need to be superalert today. Brooke Cant, Tamara Bucca, Holly Booth and Lyshae Barry will give it their best, but the Eagles will soar to top place on the ladder.

Holly Booth will need the radar dialled in today when the Stonekittens take on Edi-Asp.

Netball Notes Division 1 Edi-Asp Round 14 v YCW Our Volunteers Round Last time netball feautured on the weekend we played a split round against the Tiger girls, with good results. The match of the round was the A grade game where everyone played well & we were able to even the ledger. One a piece & we’re very happy that David’s prediction in the Record didn’t come to fruition! On Saturday 7th, we also held our Netball Luncheon & what a brilliant day! Former International player & coach, Sue Hawkins, was a terrific guest speaker & our host, Al, was at his masterly best! Thank you to everyone who helped & the day displays the best of our fantastic volunteers! From setting up, to donating amazing raffle prizes, to manning the door & selling raffle tickets. Everything ran smoothly! A big than you to everyone involved! You are simply the best!! This week we are celebrating another loyal player milestone. Casie B plays her 50th game today! Casie started out umpiring for us back in 2014 as she’d lost her mojo for the game but lucky for us, it quickly returned. Two games umpiring & the rest is history. Casie has taken to the court with the passion & determination of a great defender. Premiership player, club captain & club award winner, Casie is a fantastic Eagle! Good luck today Casie! Here’s to the girls bringing home a good win to celebrate! (This week we also will be celebrating Steph B’s & Georgie K’s 50th game with the whole club, even though their milestones were played last round.) Soar Eagles!

beat us by 20 last time round. A vast improvement but we need to be more consistent and give an all round 4 quarter performance to stay in finals contention. Izzy’s work rate after half time gave her BOC. Mach 1 Panel & Paint B Grade found themselves short before they even began, losing 2 players that morning 1 hour before netball started with illness and injury. We then bought 2 players up from C grade to fill the void but the opposition was just too strong. Olivia G was BOC after coming up from C Grade, playing an impressive game. Anytime Fitness A Grade were super strong only allowing Mt Eliza to score 2 goals while we sat on 17 in the first but they lifted and we dropped a little and the rest of the game was quite even, we don’t like the wet and the conditions were windy and slippery, the girls did only what they had to out on court to stay ahead.BOC was Katey R for a stellar effort and her great attitude when thrown into any position. Go Doggies!

Mornington Hairhouse Warehouse D Grade had an eight goal improvement in the game against Mt Eliza this round taking an impressive 10 goal win. Ruby was a stand out with her constant pressure, interceptions & composure to take out Best On, closely followed by Georgie & Kayla. D grades ability to play as a tight knit team is being shown week in & out & is putting them in great form for finals! Mornington Tyrepower C Grade had a great game and came home with a 1 goal win, considering Mt Eliza

Netball Notes Division 1 Sorrento The weather was shocking & the wind nearly blew everyone off the court. Tough for anyone to play in let alone on asphalt. A grade took it out straight from the start working the full court both in defence & attack. With an early lead, they built on this each quarter to an impressive win. Congrats to Tiahn for another week in A Grade. Best on Hannah, Tiahn & Bec What a game for B grade today! We really wanted to put our best foot forward against Bonbeach after going down by 2 last time. It was intense in defence, picking off intercepts after intercepts. Chelsea was dynamic through the mid court. Tiahn working herself nicely around the goals. Overall the girls played extremely well, let build on this coming into next week. Best on Chelsea, Gemma & Mikkea. Bonbeach were tough opponents for the C Grade Sharks. We showed discipline & stuck to their plays, moving the ball down the court with skill to combat the weather. Our goaler’s worked hard to convert the work down the court despite the windy conditions. Best on Charlee, Brooke & Meg D grade battled the elements today & knew we had a tough game on our hands. Narelle impressed in mid court, Holly consistent in goals. What a goal for goal games with the Shark being able to run ahead in the last quarter for a great win. Best on Holly, Annie & Narelle. Thank you to our amazing sponsor RE-CREATION GYM SORRENTO for their support and especially to the wonderful Penelope Connolly who is keeping us fit and motivated.

Frankston Bombers The sun was shining bright. A light breeze was present, but not enough to ruffle any feathers. The footballers were up on the hill, settling in to watch some netball. D grade started off running&raring to go. The score was close all game. Kim played an amazing game-using her height to her advantage&taking every rebound she could get. Gee heard there was Netflix up in the trainers room, so rolled her ankle to go watch, Skye joined her

at halftime. 2 defenders down, YC ended 2 goals up. C started with Bess running through her banner for her 50th game. Holly was a standout in D, working her hardest to get every loose ball she could. Unlucky for us, our best was not as good as YC’s. B grade played their best quarter in their 4th quarter. They really came together as a team&came off court feeling like they had more space then NASA. Chloe was BOC for the day, putting her Vixen plays into the game! If only they played 4 quarters of their 4th quarter netball they would have had it. By the time A grade took the court, the sun was out, producing heat of 25 degrees. The coaches decided that Blair should play everywhere&so she did&smashed it. Coaches Cath&Bev were shooting&stopping goals at each end, with Polly moving the ball seamlessly between the two! Polly hurt her finger which meant Musto went in C - a laughing and heavy breathing Musto then hurt her thumb nail - it instantly went black! Sore fingers&all, couldn’t stop YC’s sharp shooters&they outscored us on the day. Go Bomber #COR

Frankston YCW Another win on the board for A grade, against Bombers. Although the weather conditions didn’t permit a clean game the girls worked on their control and decision making throughout the 4 quarters. With out mid court working on their drives and opening up the court, we saw some amazing dummy drives and fakes that created opportunities in the ring. BOC goes to Ash again for her spot on shooting! B grade girls also adjusted to the windy, wet conditions and played a very smart, short, sharp game of netball. The girls drove hard into space providing a front safe option, while in defence applying man to man pressure. BOC was Taylah for playing 4 consistent quarters. Shout out to Kirsty for her 50th game! C grade were looking to bounce back after a loss the previous week and put together 4 consistent quarter of netball. Right from the whistle each player stepped up and did what was asked. We led from beginning and worked hard at maintaining the lead with a final score of 48-17. BOC goes to Holly. With lightening threatening to call of the game, the D grade girls copped the worst of the weather. We knew going into the game that we needed to slow the play to keep control of the ball and hold possession. Despite a few moments of switching off the girls adjusted amazingly. Everyone had hands over every ball and our defensive pressure was top notch. BOC goes to Abbey for her defence work and also her support of the other defenders.

Netball Notes Division 1 Pines Last round saw us take on Rosebud for the second time down at Rosebud! The weather certainly was not on our side from the start of the day with torrential downpour from the outset. Our D Grade girls worked hard in the rain and played a very calm and steady game to take out the win! Wicked game from out defence end who really put the pressure on. C Grade also did well in the conditions and stuck with Rosebud until the end of the game. Good job girls for sticking it out until the end. B Grade saw some relief for part of the game however the downpour of rain eventually got to them as well. Very messy games by all but well done girls for sticking together as a team and supporting each other through a tough match. A Grade saw a serious downpour that had the game called off multiple times. However the girls were required to finish the game and did well to push Rosebud until the end. Lucky for the bye round as we had many ankle injuries come out of those matches. But we are rested and ready to go against Bombers and our favourite round of the year..... Ladies Day!

Bonbeach A fortnight ago we had a special win in the seniors beating ladder leaders Sorrento down there. A proud day to be a Bonbeach player, coach, member and supporter. A fantastic day was had for our annual $5000 draw on Saturday last week. Thanks to everyone who bought a ticket and attended! Today we take on Mt Eliza in a very important game, especially for our Seniors and C Grade who are in contention for a finals berth. Good luck to everyone involved today and as always... GO SHARKS!

A Slice of MPNFL History Clubs looking to build on a rich history By Doug Dyall Finals are fast approaching in the MPNFL this year and for some of the more fortunate clubs it provides an opportunity to build on a strong recent run of success – take Frankston YCW and Sorrento for instance. Lifting silverware at the top of the premiership dais has become part of the culture of those clubs, where success is expected rather than stumbled across. But for clubs like Devon Meadows, who are yet to claim a senior premiership in their history, climbing the mountain is a destination that dreams are made of.

Its’s Okay, Not to be Okay Round You may have seen the slogan on footy club apparel or on a car sticker on your drive home from work - but what does “It’s Okay Not To Be Okay” really mean and who is this organisation? It’s Okay, Not to be Okay was formed in the very pit of our heartache, in May 2016, when our family tragically lost Ben at 22 years of age to suicide. One minute he was watching a movie on the couch with his older sister, the next minute gone, ripped from our lives, and from our futures forever. Ben was outgoing, lively, affectionate, and not afraid to show his emotions and was very much loved by everyone he met. When we were looking for Ben on that Sunday night, never in our wildest dreams could we have imagined that we would have found him the way that we did. That he would have taken his own life. This is why we started It’s Okay, Not to be Okay. If Ben; the life of the party, who has a loving family, a great job and friends, thought that this was an answer to his darkest thoughts and could do this, then anyone could and this didn’t sit well with us. So here we are today. Our aim and mission is to educate, support and assist with mental health battles, loss and grief struggles, and promote suicide prevention within the community, because we all walk around with stories and feelings that not many, or no one else knows about. You can get involved by helping normalise conversations about mental health by wearing a jumper of ours, or by putting a sticker on your car, or by running an event or adding a logo to your uniform. You can jump on our Facebook page and share your story or even just jump on and like our page. Or, more importantly, you can be brave enough to ask your family, team mates and coaches if they are ok and, if they’re not, get them some help.

We are looking forward to this up and coming official, “It’s Okay, Not to be Okay”, round to help get our message out there and to continue to stamp out the stigma that may be associated with mental health issues. The Hocking Family

The Hocking family from left; Ben’s father Paul, sisters Hayleigh, Maddison and Georgia with Ben Hocking. MPNFL – Round 15, Saturday 28 July. Round 15 of the MPNFL is the official “It’s Okay, Not to be Okay” round, with the signature match taking place between Frankston Bombers and Bonbeach at Greg Beck Oval. There will be a raffle taking place on the day, the canteen and bar will be open, so please join the Hocking’s for what is sure to be a passion-filled round – dedicated to the memory of Ben and the future endeavours of “It’s Okay, Not to be Okay”. Footy Preview - Division 2 Red Hill aims for a clean sweep By David Nagel A seven-game winning streak has seen Red Hill climb to third place on the ladder and the Hillmen can progress one-step further today with a win over Karingal at the Red Hill Showgrounds. The Hillmen, who have not lost a game since the end of May, today look for a clean sweep of victories against all other teams in the top five. It’s an impressive record, built mainly on the ability to keep opposition teams under wraps. Coach Jamie Mollo has one of the hardest working teams in the competition, instilling a team-defence mentality that is proving very difficult to break down. The Hills’ midfield really does work hard to get back and assist their defence, with Jake Mold, Dylan Hoare, Marcus Dal Lago and Rheede Hopgood working overtime against Crib Point last week despite being streets ahead on the scoreboard. Mold is a very smart midfielder who doesn’t get sucked into the contest and is quite often the first handball receive to get the Hillmen off and running. The Hillmen are also very creative off half back with Jonah Siversen, Dan McNamara and the recently returned Matt Hyden providing plenty of run, while Aiden Marchesani and Hamish McShane just stayed back defensively and took care of business. To complete the package, Ben Hughes and Chris Irving are proving important targets up forward, with livewires Daniel Allsop and Jono Ross both capable of hitting the scoreboard in a hurry. But Karingal, well they’re certainly no mugs themselves. The Bulls were slow to start against Rye last week, conceding three of the first four goals, before kicking 14 goals to four from midway through the first term. The Demons had the Bulls locked away early, but a brilliant running goal from Callan Dixon, after a slick one-two exchange with Mason Russell, had the Bulls still trailing, but in a much better frame of mind heading into the quarter-time huddle.

The Bulls kicked 4.6 to 1.1 in the second term to open up a 20-point lead before blowing the Demons away with a 7.2 to 2.1 third term. Duncan Proud and Andy McInnes shared the duties in the ruck, with McInnes having a big impact at the start of the third term. The midfield battle will be a beauty today, with the likes of Dixon, Andy Mathers, David Hirst and Steve McInnes looking to give the Bulls’ forwards the first look at the footy. Red Hill’s defence is miserly, stingy at best, and that ability to apply one-on-one pressure to that back six will go a long way towards a Bulls’ victory today. If the Hillmen get on top through the midfield, then Bulls’ defenders like Luke Van Raay, Dylan Gregson, Matt Jackson and Zane Merdanovic could be in for a very long day at the office. This one will be tight and tough from the outset, with neither team willing to concede an inch and give a grain of impetus to an opposition that have their eyes on the same prize at the end of the season. The Bulls’ are about to make a statement – they’ll win today by 13 points.

Sam Fowler has been a dangerous forward for Dromana in recent times.

Footy Preview - Division 2 Hastings is just one step away from becoming the last piece in the finals puzzle and the Blues can lock that position away with a win over Langwarrin at Lloyd Park today. The fifth-placed Blues have a very tough last month of footy, taking on the Kangaroos, Karingal, Red Hill and Chelsea so, if they lose this, will be under serious pressure to hold on. The Blues will start underdogs in their last three games of the season. The Blues have had a good fortnight of late, defeating a vastly improved Tyabb by 16 points before strolling to victory after a fast start against Pearcedale last week. Their two key targets, Luke Hewitt and Paul Rogasch, kicked four goals apiece against the Dales, while Ricky Ferraro, Dylan Paarlberg and Dale Alanis sensed the importance of the occasion and produced some of their best football of the season. The challenge of taking on Dromana with an injurydepleted list proved way beyond Langwarrin last week. Important names like Shane Paterson, Sean Herdman, Blake Peach, Nick Hammill and Josh Biggs were all missing against the Tigers and the Kangas just can’t afford that sort of luxury. They need their full cattle on the park to be competitive against the better teams in the competition. Haydn Golby, Luke Churcher, Blake Harkness and Bayleigh Tate all stood tall against the Tigers and will need to be brave again today.

This is it for Langy. Lose and they become a finals spectator, but win and they’ll be odds on to be a participant. They’ll rise to the occasion – and win by 15 points. A horror fortnight of footy has left Rye now requiring a major miracle to play finals this year, but the Demons can keep those slender hopes alive by defeating Devon Meadows at Rowley Reserve today. The Demons failed their two-week exam against Chelsea and Karingal, losing by 57 and 56 points to show exactly where they sit tin the pecking order. They have winnable games ahead, against the Panthers, Somerville and Pearcedale, before a last-round visit from Dromana should end their season for good. Last week’s game against Karingal sort of summed up their season in way. The Demons were very competitive in the early stages, playing good enough footy to match it with the best, before fading badly in the second half. Their list of scalps is quite impressive this year, with Langwarrin, Red Hill and Hastings all victims of the Demons at their very best. It’s a promising sign for the future, if they can build consistency that is, but right now the Demons are just a little off the pace. Matt Hill was terrific for the Demons last week, while Adam Kirkwood and Matt McIndoe put their bigger bodies to good use through the midfield. Tyrren Head

Footy Preview - Division 2 looks dangerous up forward, but the Demons need to give him more supply to make him fully effective. They face a big challenge today against the Panthers, who scored a terrific win over Somerville last week. Michael Theodoridis was the difference with five goals, and he presents the biggest threat to the Demons again today. ‘The Golden Greek’ is very strong, and deceptively quick off the mark, and Jye Lloyd or Nick Baron will need to be on their toes if they stand the key forward this afternoon. Mat Fletcher is also in terrific form, while Ash Adams, Cal O’Hare and Liam Drew have all been solid contributors in recent times. A close finish is almost assured here…but we’ll go for Rye to avenge its round-10 loss to the Panthers by 17 points. Dromana flexed its muscles against Langwarrin last week and will look to repeat the dose when Tyabb pays a visit to Pier Street. The Tigers were awesome across the board last, moving the ball cleanly in fine conditions and making the Kangaroos look second rate. If they had their kicking boots on their 88-point margin could have blown out to epic proportions! Ben Holmes made a welcome return with five goals while the likes of Rory Gregg, Ryan Smyth, Terry Wheeler and Andy Howison had one of those days where nothing much went wrong – which are pretty rare in football. The Tigers are the big story this year, but close behind must be the Yabbies who are enjoying that most underrated of commodities – being competitive.

They have now won three of their last six games, with last week’s victory over Chelsea clearly their most impressive performance of the season. Jake Anderson continued to shine with four goals, Jack Doman kicked three, while Aaron Turner, Brad Harbinson, Paul Ransom and Darcy Underwood took it to the Seagulls from the outset. The Yabbies are gaining respect, and won’t want to take a backward step today after being crushed by the best team in the competition. They’ll fight to the end…but will be eight goals shy at the final siren. Chelsea’s top-three hopes are now in dire need of resuscitation and the Seagulls can begin that revival against Somerville at Beardsworth Avenue today. The Seagulls had some serious ups and downs last week. Outplayed by Tyabb in the first half, the Gulls rallied and looked sure-fire winners after a five-goal-to-two third term. But they would have been disappointed with their finish, unable to break down the Yabbies just week’s out from a finals campaign. Ben Holman continued his fantastic season in the ruck, with Reid Crowe, Jack Francis and Dave Willett, who kicked four goals, also shining on a day that had little lustre. Somerville was also disappointing against Devon Meadows last week in a game they would have expected to win.

www.aflsoutheast.com.au

Footy - Division 2 Billy Rolfe kicked two goals to be the only livewire up forward, while Adrian Speedy provided run and Ben Sedgwick matched motors with the Panthers’ big-man department. Nick Mason and Lachie Haskett were also impressive performers, but the Eagles just left too little to too few. The Gulls will begin to breathe easy again after a 27-point victory. And Pearcedale can make a sharp jump up the ladder if the Dales can get a hold of Crib Point at Tractor Park today. The Dales currently sit on four wins, and will be quite content with their season if they win today and then win at home against Rye in round 17. Outings against Chelsea and Langwarrin might be a little more difficult. Luke Dalmau has been a star for the Dales this season, while big-men Ben Mitchell and Harry Prior, and Dan Heijden and Luke Murray, have soldiered on against some pretty strong opposition. Crib Point produced some nice passages of play against Red Hill last week but would too often break down with that final kick inside forward 50. Sam Kilduff is a smooth-moving left-footed wingman, Jarrod Fisk and Kieran Jamieson battled well against Harry Wynn-Pope in the ruck, while Myles Jamieson and Brad Arnold fought hard against a very talented Red Hill midfield. But, at the end of the day, the Magpies defence was put under way too much pressure with Brendan Phillips, Tim Cook, Elliott Avis and Jacob Cook unable to stem the flow. The flow won’t be as steady today – but Pearcedale will still win by six goals.

Footy Notes Tyabb And there it is! A great day down at the pond last week, playing equal 2nd on the ladder. After they touched us up in our first encounter, our boys from Bunguyan put together our best game of the year. Jumping out of the blocks and taking a couple of goal lead into the first change(probably should have been about 4 or 5 goal), we managed to make it 3 goals at the half way point. A gulls comeback meant we had only a slender 1 point lead at 3/4 time. The boys rallied, even after the lead was taken for the first time in the game by a fast finishing Chelsea. We managed to kick 3 for the quarter and hang on for dear life! ANDO (4sossies), HANDSOME and TINA TURNER were dominant. MAN CHILD DOMAN picked up where he left off last week (3sossies). ROGAN was fantastic as usual and DIGS played another solid game on a great player. We travel down to Dromana today to take on the ladder leaders...... Surely not???!!! In the reserves our boys put in a fantastic effort to just come up short against top 3 side Chelsea. With that sort of effort and intensity there’s no doubt we can match it with any side in the Comp. Better players: Hose, Robinson, Scown & Buchan” The 19s boys again fell agonisingly short in another thrilling encounter going down by three points. The boys played their best footy for the year in the last quarter but were not able to get over the line. The Yabbie Coachella function saw Jacks good form continue for the day with another BOG going his way #nipnip

Chelsea The Club made it’s 1st trip down to Tyabb last Saturday and hence to say it was an eventful day to say the least. Firstly a huge thanks to all concerned regarding the bad injury we incurred in the 19’s. Very best wishes to Tristan for a speedy recovery, we are all with you Champ. 3 games of footy and they were all nail biters, really pleased for Dan and all the Under’s as it has been a tough few weeks, under extreme adversity the boy’s came away with a great win and no doubt heading towards next year we will have a lot to look forward to. Great work boy’s !! The 2nd’s got away with a close win and to be honest they probably were very lucky, full credit to the Tyabb team as they took it up to us all day. Our blokes aside from a few just need to have a serious look at themselves , just to many bid heads and no respect. We also need

more on the track so let’s all harden up and get things sorted over the next few weeks. In the main game , another close one and again, as the Coach said after the game Tyabb would have been robbed had we managed to pinch it. All that needed to be said was said post game so we will leave it at that. On a much brighter note a huge thumbs up to big Jake Spesevski who debuted on Saturday and really put his hand up, shades of the mighty Storker here folks. Great kid with a Great attitude, Keep punching Champ !! Two massive home games for us in the next 2 weeks lad’s so now is the time for action. No excuses. See you at the Gullery !!

Hastings 3 strong wins of football against Pearcedale on the weekend, in front of a very poor crowd Hastings day got of to a sensational start with the under 19;s scoring a very impressive 103 point win, we are not sure when the last time we had a 3rds side win by such a margin, but it was great for the young Blues to record such a win, with coach Foy unavailable Tom Austin stepped in and steered the boys to a memorable win, well done. The Reserves consolidated their second spot on the ladder with a solid 86 point win, the twos are going along nicely and just need to keep winning and maintain their position at the top of the ladder, with a few players still to come back, spots are going to be keenly fought for. The Seniors had a good 10 goal win against a young Pearcedale side, all players played their roles, but unfortunately Matt Clifford suffered a bad hip injury, hopefully the prognosis is good, and we wish Matty a speedy recovery. Langwarren today, for the Seniors its pretty simple, win today and playing finals for a 4th year in a row which has not been done since 1990-93 is assured, lose then we are back to being 6 points clear of Langy with 3 tough games left, how much do you want it boys? 28th July past players day, $20 per head to book ring club on 59791740 $2000 reverse draw raffle $25 a ticket includes an hour of beer wine soft drink see any players for tickets Sponsors Bay Building David Gibbs Lawyers Hastings La Porchetta Hastings Roberts & Green Real Estate Hastings

Footy Notes Red Hill In the words of Sheldon Cooper from Big Bang Theory..”you are in my spot”. Today at the Hill the Ones are playing for second spot, and to achieve this goal we must kick more goals than them, which is our..... goal. Ben”Billy” Hughes kicked 7 of the best Dylan H and Daniel Allsop got amongst the goodies and picked up the votes. Great to see Simon “Cyril” Allsop in the Ones and picked up a few assists on the way. The Magoos started heading in the right direction, but need beat the Bulls this week. The boys went on a goal frenzy kicking 15 majors, and not letting Cribby register a snag. James G kicked a bagful and Billy Tuck celebrated his game 100 by picking up goals and votes. Sammy Scicluna is stringing some consistency together in the important part of the season. In the Unders, the boys met with expected pressure from a team that will challenge in the last games of the season. No panic stations, no new tactics, just do the job as they have done each week, and “bezinga” (Sheldon Cooper) 6 goals in the third quarter to keep the boys without a loss entering R15. Another challenge looms today as 1st play 2nd in a blockbuster pre final match. JJ kicked 5 and proved his worth at both ends of the ground. The Sandman picked up 3 and Ben “ChipsnGravy” Proudly supported by Davys was a superb general in defence. Plenty of past players today, rekindling memories of games gone by in the green shed. Get over before the chatter turns to dribble. Auction night 28 July, get a table together. The Mountain Goat

Devon Meadows This week we take on our longest road trip so far for the season with a journey down to the beautiful Rye. The Seniors will be looking to get the 4 points and make it 2 wins in a row and 2 wins against Rye for this year after defeating them a very short 5 weeks ago. Last week was a very good day for our football club, with a win in the Seniors and a 5 goal haul from Michael “Big Micky” Theodoridis, which now brings him to 3rd on the goal kicking tally with 45 snags. The Reserves fought hard but they 2 middle quarters Somerville was able to kick away and we were always playing catch up. The under 19s are still battling away however there want and desire cant be mistaken as such a young group. We were fortunate to have one of the AFL greats Nicky Winmar host a luncheon for us which made the day very exciting and this excitement could be seen by a certain reserves full back as he was able to speak to Nicky and get a photo with him pre game. Boomer enjoyed his 200th(201st) game in style with a nice win and sung the song in the middle with an AFL inspired Gatorade shower.

The season is drawing to an end however the functions are still in force. We have Christmas in July on 28th of July, Past Players and Sponsors Day 4th of August to wrap up our last 2 home games. Our last game we will be back to the rooms for some end of season drinks. Grand Final breakfast is shaping up nicely with some “huge” figures to be attending. Be sure to keep up to date on our Facebook page. Go Meadows!

Dromana Welcome to the attendees at the 2008 Reserves Premiership players reunion. This round 15 games against Tyabb is Sponsored by Hillview Quarries and sees our Senior Players in Heritage jumpers which will be auctioned after the game. Last Saturday saw us play Langwarrin at Lloyd Park after a long break since we last played for Home and Away points there. For many older supporters this venue held some bad memories and the day started badly with the U19s missing a key forward not been able to convert their opportunities although they matched Langwarrin in general play but suffered a 39 point loss. On paper our Reserves team was one of the strongest we have fielded but the Langwarrin defence repelled numerous entries into our forward line and the lack of a tall marking forward proved costly with Dromana losing by 10 points. Two losses and a Langwarrin Senior side desperate for a win to maintain their finals chances it appeared that history may repeat itself , but, Dromana kept Langwarrin scoreless for the best part of the first half while kicking 10 goals to lead by 60 points at half time. The third term saw Dromana kick 3 more goals to Langwarrins 1 point. In the final term both teams kicked two goals but Dromana had 10 scoring shots to two to run out 88 point winners in a decisive result. EVENTS 12th August - Major Raffle. Footy Notes Langwarrin Welcome back to Lloyd Park for the second week in a row. This week we take on Hastings in what will be vital matches for the club. It is good to see our new light towers taking shape. They will add much to the facilities here at Lloyd Park. They are hard to miss ! Last week we had good solid wins in the two earlier games. Our reserves in particular witheld a fast finishing Dromana to run out winners by 10 points. It was good to see Tang lead the way down back. Andy Johnson kicked 3 and was amongst the best that included Hanger, Tex, and Napier. The reserves won by 39 points in a game in which they led all day. Good players included Lee, Watts , Mack and Bassett. The sun shone bright as club great Andrew “ Tails “ Taylor celeberated his 150th game for the club in his return game in the seniors. A great man around the club who always gives 100%, congratulations on the milestone Tails. Unfortunately we were beaten in just about all facets of the game and Dromana ran out comfortable winners. Church, Golby , Siz and Cuthbert tried hard all day, but to be honest we were beaten by a far better side. Today we can turn it around and keep our senior’s finals hopes alive by reversing the outcome of our recent game against Hastings. It is always good to see the framed Langy Jumper that hangs in our premium sponor O’Brien Real Estate’s office. Thanks to O’Brien’s for their continued support of our club.

Massive test in all grades here at Red Hill today as we prepare for our finals campaign, and a chance to test ourselves against fellow upcoming finalists Last week in brilliant sunshine at home we got the points in all except the Senior Women and U17 netball with A Grade having a week off due to forefeit The Unders really worked into the game and lifted each quarter to clock up a big win; the 12pm lads then followed up with the choccies as well and the ones were pushed a few times early but walked away with the 4 points by a good margin On the bottom oval the girls hosted ladder leaders Hastings and pushed them the whole way, going down by less than a goal

Crib Point A slow start from both teams in the U19’s saw Crib gain the ascendency heading into half time. Our chances were soon put to bed, however, with Red Hill slotting 10 goals in the second half to run away with a 37-point win. Two silky left footers in Jett Bauer-Lodge and Harry Laughton were dominant all day. The reserves side came up against Red Hill hoping they could replicate their previous weeks’ performance by securing another win. It simply wasn’t to be with Red Hill running all over the depleted Crib Point, finishing 96-point victors. Sam Parmenter was gallant in defence whilst Joel Wisken contributed well across the ground before a hard hitting bump saw him break his collarbone in what was an unfortunate event. The seniors were unable to match Red Hill on the weekend. The hillmen declared victory over Crib early with a 9-1 goal first quarter. The pies hit back late almost managing to win the final quarter but it was too far gone to make a difference to the final result. Brad Arnold returned to form whilst Jake Bryant was well pleased with his efforts in front of the big sticks, snagging his first senior goal. This week club legend David “Buzz” Cook will run out for his 200th senior game. Buzz has been a one club player from juniors all the way through to seniors and has provided the club with some of its finest memories to date. Let’s get around the ultra consistent midfielder this week and show him the respect he deserves.

The unders had a big win against an undermanned Devon. Wilkinson bagged 5 and was in the best alongside Moroney and Dixon. The boys are sitting 5th on the ladder and need to continue their good form if they want a crack at finals. The reserves had a great win and welcomed back Rhys Palmer into the side after a very long hiatus on the sidelines following a knee injury. Great to see Rhys back playing some good footy, kicked 2 and was in the best, Jake Haskett and Stapleton also leading the way. In celebration of NAIDOC week, AFL legend Nicky Winmar tossed the coin and the Seniors partook in a traditional Aboriginal smoking ceremony. The boys went down after a tight last quarter battle. We put ourselves behind going into the last with some inaccurate goal kicking. Credit to the boys for fighting back in the last but we couldn’t come away with the win. Mason, Speedy, Haskett & Sedgy among the best. This week we head over to Chelsea for the first time, we look forward to a tough contest. Next week (July 28th), we hope to see all of our supporters down to cheer on the boys in our last home game of the 2018 season. SFNC are also pleased to announce that we will be hosting finals for both Football and Netball, we are looking forward to hosting a competitive finals series.

Not much to celebrate in the footy results last week, with all 3 sides going down to a well drilled karingal outfit. It was time to celebrate 150 club games for Hagan Rice though. 117 senior and 33 reserves games, a 2007 reserves premiership player and winner of the BOG medal that day. Well done Hagan on a great football career in the red and blue. Today another milestone with Jye Lloyd set to play his 100th club game and get his name up on the honour board in the rooms. 97 senior games and 3 reserves games as a youngster. Great to have you back at the club Jye, and join our 2006 premiership co captain, and your brother Dustin in the 100 game club. The U/19’s were shot back to reality in a big way, to a more committed and disciplined Karingal side. Maybe a few had got ahead of themselves and the talk of finals football down the track, had them lose focus on the old saying, “one week at a time”. The reserves were a fraction undermanned, great to see Adam Dyer again pull on the red and blue guernsey, as they were really the only team to have a real dip for 4 quarters and went down to Karingal by 14 points. Great to see young Harrison Richardson, Jacko Allen and Mitch Hillyear in the best. Seniors were disappointing after 1/2 time, a few injuries didn’t help, but were well beaten but a better Karingal side. Matt Hill, Adam Kirkwood and Gabe Nocella all in the best. Legends Lunch Aug 3rd, tickets selling fast, $130 P/H, please see any committee person for a ticket.

Netball Preview Pressure builds in the race for the finals By David Nagel The battle for finals spots is getting very interesting indeed with just one game separating second-placed Karingal from fifth-placed Hastings as we head into the last four games of the season. Langwarrin is the only team that is 100-percent secure at the moment, with Karingal and Crib Point showing enough positive signs to suggest they’ll be there when the finals begin at Somerville on Saturday 18 August – And how quick is that coming around? That leaves Tyabb and Hastings, locked together on 40 points, to battle it out for that last spot at Somerville. Tyabb has a growing injury list, and will be coming off back-to-back losses when it hits the road to take on Dromana. The Yabbies looked in control against Chelsea last week but suffered more injury to key players to be overrun by the Seagulls in the final term. Take nothing away from Chelsea, it was exceptional in a 15-7 last quarter, but the Yabbies just didn’t have the legs to go with the Seagulls in the dying stages. Dani Slaughter, Birgitta Nemaric and Keira Wills gave solid four-quarter performances and will need to do so again today against the Tigers. Dromana was no match early for Langwarrin last week, conceding a 16-3 first quarter, before limiting the damage after quarter time. Chloe Birch, Riverlea Walter and Millie Brodie made a difference to the Tigers after the first break, while Natasha Petroff (GK) stood strong and proud in defence. The Tigers are still a very rough chance of playing finals if they win this one…but the Yabbies will prevail in a close one. Hastings will be fresh and revitalised when the Blues take on the biggest challenge in netball today – trying to defeat Langwarrin at Lloyd Park. The Blues had a day off against Pearcedale last week, but their performance seven days earlier against Tyabb was most impressive. Hayley Morton (GK) and Madelina Nyoul (GD) defended brilliantly, while Jess and Sarah Hosking fed Armani Buskermolen (GS) and Helen-Margaret Ashin (GA) with some terrific passing at the opposite end of the court. It feels like when the Blues have their full-strength team in they can defeat anybody – except Langwarrin! The Kangaroos have been the trendsetters all year, keeping their motivation and momentum at a high level for the duration of the season. Sara Drain is a wonderful player and leader through the midcourt, while Emily Zeuschner (GD) and Jayde Aron (GK) have given opposition goalers some serious headaches this year.

60

Throw in the likes of Sarah Anderson, Emily Bennet, Jayde Travers and Brooke Kiely and the Kangas would appear to have all bases covered at the moment. Depending on the Hastings list this could be a cracking game of netball this afternoon, but the Kangaroos will keep their two-game margin at the top with a 10-goal victory. Chelsea and Somerville both had fantastic victories last week and will be full of confidence when going head to head at Chelsea. The Seagulls came from the clouds to defeat Tyabb last week, with Jordyn Barnett, Olivia Stewart and Verona Kaitani running rampant through the midcourt in a dominant last-quarter display. Georgia Hernan had the hot-hand in attack, while Ash Barnett and Julia Kaitani gave nothing away in defence. Somerville was super-brave against Devon Meadows, giving away a five-goal lead at half time before producing a 14-8 third quarter. It gave the Eagles the narrowest of leads, one they would maintain until the time clock ran out. Caitlyn Borley (GD) and Jaimee Peney (GK) were amazing players in defence, while Dani Planner (C), Briony Kelly (WA) and Lucy Anderson (WD) never stopped running all day. There’s nothing between these two teams – Chelsea will win by one. And Karingal finally returns to the court, after a lengthy absence, when the Bullettes make the trip to Red Hill. The Bullettes have had two weeks off, courtesy of byes against Pearcedale and Rye, but will come in confident after a great win against Langwarrin last start. They won the first three quarters in a very impressive display against the ladder leaders. Mardi Cunningham (GK) and Amelia Haugen (GD) were terrific that day against the Kangas, while Madi Capsalis (WA) and Claudia Whitfort (WA) combined wonderfully well through the midcourt. The Bullettes are building at the right time of year. Red Hill has had a difficult draw of late, but never gives up and will relish the challenge today. Georgia Vines (GD) and Sienna Wills (GK) set a great example in defence while Nicola Mold (C), Emilie Baird (WD) and Meg Hamill (GA) will give their all again today. But the Bullettes are good, very good, and they’ll win comfortably. Crib Point and Devon Meadows have byes.

Netball Notes Tyabb D Grade girls went in to last week’s match with one very clear goal, reverse the result from our last meeting with Chelsea. The gulls started strong, scoring the first 3 goals, but Meegs quickly adjusted & began turning the ball over. Kenz came on in the 2nd & was able to fix our midcourt problems which saw better entry into the goalers. The girls were disappointed with their ball use in the 3rd but Leah’s leadership settled the chaos just in time. Dee stepped up in the last putting in a huge amount of pressure and finishing off with class in attack. The end result? Goal achieved! C grade matched it with Chelsea for 3 quarters before going down by 11.Brooke’s hard work in the circle and her connection with Nat in the mid court was great to watch along with our full court defensive pressure which we continue to work on each week. We had another really slow start to the B Grade match this week but were once again able to turn things around and build from quarter time onwards. With plenty of players being required to play more than 4 quarters throughout the day, the girls responded to all of the changes and adjustments required across the match. Still plenty to play for! A depleted A Grade team with more injuries picked up throughout the game meant that we just couldn’t gain any momentum across the 4 quarters. Chelsea put up a fantastic fight and showed some awesome passages of play and we just couldn’t capitalise on the turnovers that we made. We now move onto next week!

we were able to get over the line with a GOAL ON THE FINAL WHISTLE! Let’s hope we have some of our ducks back next week when we take on Chelsea. Thanks to the B Grade girls for stepping up this week. We have Chelsea away this week where we will be looking to backup our wins!

Karingal Another clean sweep for the 5th week straight as the bullettes solidify their position in a strong ladder position across all grades. The D girls made light work of the demons, putting out a strong 4 quarter performance with strong connections across the court winning 50-10. The C girls were put out of their comfort zone today as several change ups were made to their combinations so no stone is left unturned in their quest to be as prepared as they can be for their finals campaign. Always in control but having to fight hard for the ball, winning 31-20 B grade also made use of the depth in their list, trialling several combinations each quarter, and working themselves into the game from some rough patches to take it out 35-52. We’re off to Red Hill today to come home with 5 from 5 wins. GO BULLETTES!

Somerville Last round we took on Devon Meadows away, and there was definitely a battle on our hands. We were stoked to come away with a well deserved 4 from 4 wins. We celebrated with a few too many sangria jugs (in particular our potato farmer Jules). D Grade - The girls worked well together against Devon to come away with another win, putting them in great contentions for the cup. With so many options and combinations, the girls are showing their ability to adapt to all positions and are getting stronger every week. C Grade - What a great feeling coming away with a win. C girls have been plugging away working hard to improve and get a win on the board and it all came together yesterday. Well done girls, lets hope we can snatch another win this week against Chelsea. B Grade - The B Girls showed their diversity by trialing new combinations in order to help the severely depleted A Grade. We finished strongly in the last quarter and came away with a 57-26 goal win. Bring on Chelsea! A Grade - Similar to the Little Ducks nursery rhyme, we were left with only 3 little duckies against Devon. We OFFICIALLY have enough players on our bench to field another team! With the help of a rowdy cheer squad

Netball Notes Crib Point The return of spectacular weather was met with 4 senior wins. U/17 have had a tough run this season. Every week is a huge challenge & the girls always play with intensity & keep their heads up. BOC Albi who worked tirelessly against tall timber in goals. D Grade played their best netball this season. They opened up the court & passed cleanly. BOC was sharp shooter Lesli who dominated in goals. C Grade had a win but it wasn’t pretty. We got sucked into passing over hands & continued to turned the ball over. Drawing on experience we settled & finished playing a much better brand of netball. BOC went to Rob in goals. B Grade had an outstanding game & really took it up to a very competitive Red Hill. We had great backup, communication & trust in one another. We also had a few C Grade girls step up & fill in seamlessly. BOC Holly D in attack. A Grade had a slow start leading by just 1pt at qrt time. We lacked intensity & didn’t have the drives at the ball we needed to outsmart a strong defensive Red Hill. In the 2nd we lifted & stepped up the intensity, GS Ebony shot 16 during the 2nd term earning her BOC award! RedHill continued to push & forced us to work hard right to the end. The girls looked great & have grown as a team especially the newest members to the A Grade squad. This week marks a big milestone for one of our netball guns, congratulations to Holly Adams who plays her 150th game. Today we play Pearcedale. Lets continue our good form & get the 5 wins. Go CRIBBY!

Langwarrin We welcome Dromana to Lloyd Park for Round 14, and the Tigers brought their A game! Our baby Roos began their battle in a blistering fashion, but soon fell victim to a well drilled experienced under 17 side in Dromana. Our girls will take a lot of positives out of the match and work hard to produce a competitive result next time. D grade was the battle of the day, after losing by a goal at their last encounter, we were determined not to let the Tigers get into our heads. We won the mind battle and drew on the scoreboard, which isn’t a loss but we would’ve loved to take the four points on offer. A tight encounter in C grade produced a thrilling match. Bodies were on the line as Dromana took control of the match, but not without a fight. Eventually falling by 8 goals, we held our heads high and will take positives from this match. B grade babes started off strong, but never really settled until well in to the match. An improved Dromana side were strong and relentless, running away with a 13 goal win. Lastly A grade took the court with nothing but

determination. We played tough clinical netball and got the job done. Slick movements from our goalers and strong defensive full court pressure solidified an impressive 22 goal win. This team is ready for finals contention and we can’t wait! At home again next week to take on Hastings in what should be another tough battle...

Pearcedale A great week of netball for our club with 3 wins from 4 games with C grade only going down by the narrowest of margins. Our 17s continued their great form with a very impressive win over one of the competitions best teams. The girls continue to gain momentum as they get close to returning to full strength. Tahlia continues to shoot strongly and shot an impressive 26 goals and was supported well by Alannah in the mid court who had a fantastic game. A very accurate D grade coupled with a consistent 4 quarters and very strong defence led by Emma and Linda saw the Dales come away with a very impressive win. C grade showed good effort and pressure throughout the entire game led by a strong performance by Krispy in the mid court and a equally strong performance by Brooke who showed her versatility with at playing both ends. Sadly they were pipped by 1. B grade recorded probably its best win of the season with a 13 point win helped by Tahls accuracy from long range. Louise’s stand out season as a defender continues winning back a lot of ball for the team. She continues to get stronger each week. A great week for all Panthers and please don’t forget the two important milestone games this weekend at home. Amber Hodges 100 games Vicki Taylor 50 games Please get around these two great contributors to our club. Pearcedale Number 1 Ticket Holder

Netball Notes Rye

Demons travelled to Karingal last weekend knowing it was going to be a tough day. D grade threw everything at Karingal but Karingal were just too good on the day. Demons struggled through the midcourt whilst keeping possession. Leah played one of her best games so far this year! Defenders tried everything to shut Karingals attackers down but they were just that bit better. D grade look forward to playing Devon Meadows this week. D grade sit just outside the top 5 on the ladder. Final score saw Karingal 50 defeating Rye 10 Best on: Leah H C grade had a good start, finding some rhythm. Karingal started to lift and Demons found themselves rattled. Emily and Shannon shot beautifully all game, with Gen, Jas, Flynn and Sarah all rotating through the middle. Kristy and Alannah were outstanding in defence applying some great pressure on Karingal’s shooters. C grade sit 8th on the ladder. Final score saw Karingal 31 defeating Rye 20 Best on: Emily B grade had a slow start, until they found their feet. Karingal moved the ball quickly, which meant Rye had to really apply some heavy defence. Going into the second quarter, Rye really lifted and they continued right until the end. The defensive pressure was beyond amazing! Demons have come so far this season and should be proud! B grade won’t make finals but they have had a fantastic season just enjoying Netball for what it is! Final score saw Karingal 52 defeating Rye 35 Best on: Team! Amazing effort by all!

Red Hill What a terrific game from the U/17s. The girls achieved a 60+ goal win with the end score being the highest score a Redhill netball team has made in history. With a constant rotation throughout the game the whole team proved just how versatile they can be. Goalers, Nhyah, Zoe and Katie made sure every turnover and centre passed was used to our advantage with the defence making it very hard for Crib Point to score a goal. D grade proved again how much they have improved over the season. Playing Crib Point the second time around showed just how far the girls have come. While the score board didn’t quite reflect the efforts of the the girls it was a great game to watch. With some key defenders out our C grade team again pushed top four Crib Point to within a three goal margin! D graders Saskia stepped up to GD with Jess Land Imogen also stepping up to roles. These players are just some

64

of our ‘young talent’ squad that pave many successful seasons to come. Another close game for B grade making Crib Point work hard for the points this round . A tough defence made our young goalers push themselves to the next level . Midcourt & defence challenged their opponents relentlessly. The A grade girls played a great first quarter and kept up intense pressure against the reigning premiers! But as the game progressed Crib Point increased the lead at every break. While it was another loss the seven players showed the potential they have.

Chelsea

After some recent tough losses, Chelsea D grade wanted to play a competitive game against Tyabb. It close, and we put up a strong fight right to the end, however basic errors down the court cost us in the last quarter and we went down by just 3 points. Best on goes to Awatea who had a huge game in the defensive ring. Well done to Tyabb on a great game! After a slow start, C grade fired up for a huge 2nd quarter and were able to create a handy lead going into half time. We were able to sustain that lead for the rest of the match. Our defenders grabbed some incredible rebounds, while our mid court were able to apply amazing pressure all the way down the court. After after a draw to Tyabb last we met, we were able to come away with an 11 goal win. Well done ladies! B grade came out firing! After losing by 20 last time, we were aiming for a closer score. Ruby and Pam gave spoton feeds to our goalers who all presented so well. Best on to Jade L for her defensive pressure, shutting down her player. Kym and Tara also had plenty of intercepts and rebounds. We were up by 1-2 most of the game, just slipping away in the last minute. Great game girls! After a huge loss in round 4, A grade brought it this week! Self belief in everyone ultimately led to a win. Our defence in the goal circle was intense, quickly converted through the mid court, and into the ring. We were able to reflect on tactics and technique, and change in the moment, showing heaps of maturity. So proud of everyone!

Netball Notes Hastings U17/s unfortunately did not have a great game this week. We started slow and allowed the game to get on top of us. However we will learn from this and knuckle down at training over the next 4 weeks. D grade started strong and stayed in the game, however at half time the game got away from us. Great patches of play and with commitment the girls will see results. They just need to stick with it and keep working together. C grade had a fantastic first win, by one goal, for the season, a real nail biter for their coach Nicole. All 9 players contributed to the win. Great result for the hard work they have been putting in over the season. B grade unfortunately also did not have a great game this week. We started slow and struggled to get into the game. This game was very uncharacteristic of us, however we will bounce back this week and put our strongest foot on the court.
