PROUD PARTNERS OF

AFL South East The first season of MPNFL Division Two has exceeded all expectations and expect more of the same when an enticing finals series begins at Somerville and Rye this weekend. On behalf of AFL South East I would like to extend a warm welcome to coaches, officials, players and spectators to this year’s finals series. Congratulations to all teams that have made it through to this stage of the season. It takes a lot of hard work and dedication from both sides of the fence to play finals, and I wish all teams involved the very best of luck as you look to achieve some great things for your clubs. What a great mix we have in both football and netball this year. In football, Dromana, Red Hill, Karingal, Chelsea and Langwarrin will chase glory and provide a perfect example of why divisional football has been a success story this season. Dromana returns to the big stage of finals football for the first time since 2014, when it finished second and was bundled out in straight sets. The Tigers last won a premiership in 2013 under Gavin Artico and will start warm favourites to win this year’s title. Rikki Johnston has built a sound reputation around the Peninsula and coaching the Tigers to a premiership this year will only add to his lasting legacy. Red Hill has been a consistent presence in finals since 2014, but will begin this finals campaign from second position on the ladder - with a double chance - instead of the elimination final of the last four years. In his first year at the club, Jamie Mollo has a wonderful opportunity to break a premiership drought that extends all the way back to 1990. And for the three clubs that were brought back to MPNFL Division Two this year, Chelsea, Karingal and Langwarrin, the chance to play finals has brought some great excitement. It’s worth remembering that these three clubs have filled the bottom-three places on the Peninsula League (now Division One) ladder for the last two years. For Chelsea and Karingal that extends to the last four years, so the opportunity to play finals is one that is not being taken for granted by any of those clubs. We wish James Brain (Chelsea), Brett Dunne (Karingal), and Josh Beard and Blake McCormack (Langwarrin) the very best of luck over the coming weeks.

Point and Tyabb have shared the last four premierships in the Nepean League. The Yabbies defeated the Magpies in 2014, then Rye in 2015, before the Magpies gained their revenge over the Yabbies in the last two years. To the coaches, Sara Drain (Langwarrin), Adrienne Harris (Crib Point), Jess Whitfort (Karingal) and Keira Wills (Tyabb), good luck against some very talented opposition. I ask everyone who attends this finals series, the coaches, officials, players and spectators, to keep one thing at the forefront of their mind while at the finals. Respect the game - this is sport - this is fun! The expectation is that the game is treated in a respectful manner both inside and outside the fence. Players should always play by the rules and support and encourage their teammates. To the umpires who have been selected to officiate in these big games, congratulations on your appointments and we wish you well. Football and netball are two difficult games to officiate. Split-second decisions are made and we implore the sporting community as a whole to respect the umpire’s decision at all times. To our major partners, thank you for your ongoing support and for allowing us to service our MPNFL Division Two clubs. To our Corporate Partners – Bendigo Bank, Steller, Chisholm, Mornington Racing Club, SEN, MRC Foundation and Elastoplast – thank you for playing a huge role in making the MPNFL Division Two competition what it is today. We are also excited to be working closely with GameFace during this year’s finals series, bringing a greater user experience to our regular printed Record. Game reviews and previews, club notes and welcome messages will all be available on video, complementing our hard-copy editions. Download the GameFace App, or go to www.aflserecord. com.au to see digital content for the FDJFL, SEJ and SEWF finals series. John Anderson Region General Manager AFL South East

The netball finals are equally intriguing. Langwarrin returns to finals for the first time since 2013 to take on Crib Point, Karingal and Tyabb, three clubs that have been very powerful in recent times. Karingal has lost the last three Peninsula League grand finals to Edi-Asp, by eight, four and one goal, while Crib

AFL Vic Country AFL Victoria is pleased to announce that it has recently pledged $2.76 million in AFL funding to dozens of local football facility projects across Victoria. Sixty-two projects will receive funding which will help generate $97 million total new investment in local football facilities. Projects that best link directly to AFL Victoria’s Football Facilities Development Strategy, support female football and increase ground capacity to cater for our evergrowing participation have been successful in securing part of the $2.76 million funding allocation. AFL Victoria CEO, Steven Reaper said the funding was just one of many initiatives supporting grass roots football and was key in ensuring all Victorian’s have the opportunity to participate in football across the state. “Community football is the lifeblood of our sport and with our participation rates growing year on year and with female football booming, the provision of welcoming facilities that can cater for this growth is critical,” he said. “Whether it is new lights, oval surface upgrades or female friendly changerooms, these spaces require upgrades so that our volunteer led clubs can continue to deliver their incredibly important services to their communities.” Projects such as Brimbank City Council’s Female Friendly Change Room Upgrades at Lionheart, Keilor Park and John McLeod Reserves will create inviting and safe female friendly/ unisex change rooms for participants, spectators and officials to enjoy and maximise female participation. More than 1,200 participants from the Taylors Lakes, Deer Park and Keilor Park Football Clubs consisting of NAB AFL Auskick participants, junior mixed and boys teams and senior male and female teams will reap the benefits from such a project.

“The AFL’s contribution of this funding is part of the AFL’s ongoing contribution to community football facilities. Since 2007, the AFL/AFL Victoria have invested more than $16 million in funding to generate $300 million in investment in this important infrastructure,” he said. “I would also like to thank the Clubs, Region Commissions, Leagues and Councils for their work on developing these projects and bringing them to our attention, as well as the work they do with all levels of government to forward plan for our game and their communities.” Projects will now be submitted to various State Government and other funding programs to secure the additional funding to enable them to proceed. AFL Victoria has developed the following strategic priorities to guide the development of football facilities across the state. These link more broadly to the AFL’s development objectives Priority 1 Increase the quality/functionality and maximise the carrying capacity of existing facilities. Priority 2 Plan and develop new facilities in key growth areas across the state. Priority 3 Capitalise on opportunities to create Administration Centres/regional hubs, provide venues for talent pathway and competitions and protect landmark sites in key locations. Priority 4 Ensure facilities are catering for the diversity of participants, particularly female participants, attracted to our game. Priority 5 Continue to enhance our relationship with Government (particularly local Government) in the planning and provision of facilities. AFL Victoria is being guided by three key principles with regards to improving and developing.

In addition, sports funding offered to Melton Council will see the creation of Eynesbury’s first ever football ground. With the community growing to over 3,000 people, the new ground will see its junior football club have a home of their own. Reaper thanked the AFL for their support.

Drawn Finals

No finals in the MPNFL will be replayed. In the case of a draw, extra time will be played. If scores are level at the completion of the fourth quarter the field umpires shall direct the goal umpires to confirm the correct score. • Coaches are not permitted to address their players between the end of the fourth quarter and the start of extra time, nor between any periods of extra time. • Once scores are confirmed the ball shall be returned to the centre of the ground and the game will continue for two five-minute halves (with time on). • Each team shall kick in the same direction as they did in the fourth quarter for the first half of extra time. Teams will change ends for the second half of extra time. • If scores remain level after two five-minute periods, a further two five-minute periods (with time on) will be played with clubs changing ends after the first fiveminute period. • This process will continue until there is a result.

Netball In the event of a draw in a final, at the end of the game when scores are tied there is a two (2) minute break during which time there may be substitution and/or team changes. • At the end of the two (2) minute break, there shall be a further 2 x 5 minute halves played for 15 minute games and 2 x 3 minute halves for 12 minute games. The Centre Pass is taken by the team entitled to the next Centre Pass. • There is a 1 minute interval at half time and teams change ends. • During both of these intervals substitutions and team changes can be made. • In the event of a draw remaining at the end of extra time, play shall continue until one team has a two (2) goal advantage. No substitutions or team changes are allowed.

Footy Preview - Division 2 Seniors August brings a sweet smelling aroma By David Nagel The sweet smell of finals is well and truly in the air and Red Hill and Karingal will give all five senses a pleasurable experience today when the 2018 Qualifying Final kicks things off at the Somerville Recreation Reserve. The sight of two teams going hammer and tongs, the roar of the crowd, the taste of big-time football, and the pressure felt by everyone involved at club level makes this the most special time of the sporting year. You just can’t escape the fever and excitement, as five clubs look to break down the barriers – one by one – to become this year’s premiership team. Dromana , who rest up this week, are the most recent winners in 2013, while Chelsea (2006), Langwarrin (2005), Karingal (1999) and Red Hill (1990) will look to break droughts that fluctuate from 12 to 28 years. We can certainly see what all the fuss is about. Karingal looked set for an elimination final against Langwarrin, that was until Hastings upset Chelsea last week to send the Seagulls plummeting from their lofty perch in the top three. What an unexpected bonus for Brett Dunne and his Bulls to stumble across a double chance. “Most people will probably see it that way but I think we deserve it, we’ve had a solid year and had to cope with a lot injuries so, in the end, I think we got our just desserts,” Dunne said. “It’s great to have a double chance but it doesn’t change anything for us, we continue to plan week by week and we’re well prepared for anything. “We’re hoping to get four or five back on the park, and that still leaves two or three others that might be able to make their way back as well. “It’s an exciting time of year and we can’t wait for Saturday to come around.” Dunne is understandably coy on announcing his inclusions, but players like Andy Mathers, Michael Burke, David Hirst and Steve McInnes will ensure the Bulls are competitive in any instance. Dunne knows the Hillmen present a huge challenge. “They set up better than anyone around the ground and they can play their footy at different speeds,” Dunne said. “They have the discipline to be patient with their ball use, or they really open things up and that makes them hard to defend against.” Dan McNamara, Matt Hyden, Luke Marchesani and Lachie Chandler have been influential defenders for the Hillmen, while Harry Wynn-Pope will look to continue a brilliant season in the ruck. Sunday’s elimination final at Rye should also be a beauty with long-time foes Chelsea and Langwarrin set for an epic contest that will see one team’s season come to an end.

8

The Seagulls stumbled at the last hurdle against Hastings last week, but have built up a serious body of work that would suggest they’ll be a tough nut to crack for the Kangaroos. Todd Gardiner, Reid Crowe and Ben Holman have been hugely influential through the midfield, while Curtis Bywater and Jack Francis have been dangerous commodities up forward. Langwarrin will be on a huge high after a 107-point thumping of Pearcedale last week, with the leagues’ leading goal-kicker Jesse Murphy warming up for finals with a seven-goal haul. Kye Whitfort kicked five, while Shane Paterson, Matt Naughton and Mitch Cuthbert continued their strong recent run of form. The Battle between Naughton and Holman will be crucial, as will Chelsea’s ability to stop quick entries in to Murphy, Whitfort and Co.

To view the full preview of both finals, including more comments from coaches, download the GameFace App or go to www.aflserecord.com.au and follow the prompts.

Langwarrin ruckman Matt Naughton will look to dominate the Chelsea big-man department in the elimination final at Rye on Sunday.

Footy Preview - Division 2 Reserves & Under 19 Tipsters

The Tiges will turn things around By David Nagel Dromana and Karingal will look to take a giant step towards this year’s reserves grand final when the Tigers and Bulls square off in Saturday’s qualifying final at Somerville. The Bulls defeated the Tigers by 40 points at their only meeting this year, but that was all the way back in round three. Dromana had a purple-patch of form during the season, winning nine-straight from round five to round 13 and will be keen to recapture that form. Mitchell Gill-Furness, Daniel Maestrale, Dylan Norton and Lachie Oliver have given their all for the Tigers, while Dane Leyden-Kozikas and Jon Marshall have been their main avenues to goal. The Bulls lost to Hastings and Chelsea recently before bouncing back to form against Crib Point last week. Liam Bennett has been a driving force for the Bulls, while D’Arcy Garton, Tim Bunawan and Aaron Jack have also shed some blood, sweat and tears this season. But we’ll go for the Tigers to turn things around from earlier in the season, and win by 11 points. Chelsea and Langwarrin kickstart a big day of competition for both clubs when the Gulls and Kangas run out for Sunday’s elimination final at Rye. The Seagulls have been one of the in-form teams in the competition in recent times, winning five of their last six games including a nine-point victory over ladder leaders Hastings last week. Luke Clark has been the main option up forward for the Seagulls, while Vinny Kovacic, Josh Whelan, Corey Edmunds and Corey Peele have all played their part in the recent resurgence. Langy has also been in good nick of late, wining four of its last six, with Zac Davies, Jayden Johnsen, Mick Hare and Adam Eggleston leading the way. The Seagulls prevailed by 31 points against the Kangas in round seven and have the form on the board to win again – they’ll do so by 17 points. The hopes of two footy clubs rest on young shoulders this weekend when Rye and Crib Point take part in the Under-19 Finals Series. The Demons finished third, and will take on Karingal on Saturday, while the Magpies face local-rivals Somerville in Sunday’s elimination final at Rye. The Demons rely heavily on Dylan Allen to kick their goals, with 51 for the season, while the Bulls have an even spread with Anthony Beale, Jai Triep, Ryan McNamara and Brodie Mitchem combining for 132. That even spread will get the Bulls across the line by 21 points. And the Magpies will get the choccies against the Eagles, with Miles Sheppard, Harry Waterfall and Connor Perry to set up a meeting with Rye next week after an 11-point triumph.

Footy Notes Rye

Congratulations to Matt Wylie who last week played his 100th game for the club. A Rye junior player that has come up through the ranks, and is a fantastic contributor to our club on and off the field. He was going to celebrate long and hard into the night, but the 100th game mug, claimed another victim. Home in bed by 8pm. Matt we hope you prepare better when you get your next mug at game 150. #schoolboyerror Well the Under 19’s have finished a great home and away season in 3rd spot and now head into the finals. Selection will be very hard for the coaches with 26 players vying for 22 spots. Let’s hope these boys can take us deep into the finals series. Good luck today to Leigh and Andrew and all the players. it’s certainly a different looking team that faced Karingal 6 weeks ago, lets see a very different result as well. Unfortunately the reserves just couldn’t get over the line and finished in 7th spot a game outside the top 5. Well done to Marcus Gordon who coached the side with passion and commitment all year, and to Doogie Howie who lead the boys on the field magnificently as well. The seniors with a very inexperienced side and another debutant in Lachy Glover, son of past player Sean, played a committed brand of football. We were well in the game at 1/2 time, but were run over the top by a well drilled Dromana side. Presentation night Saturday September the 15th at the Rye RSL, 7.00pm start $65 per head. Live band and 2 course meal included.

Hastings Well the finals have arrived and this year the Blues will be represented by our Reserves team who after 18 rounds finished the season on top, congratulations to Coach Dan Lehman and his team on a great home and away season, now the hard work begins, all the best boys the Club is right behind you. The 3rds finished the season of with a win to give them 6 wins for the season, it was a great result for all the hard work that Pat Foy and his team have put in this year, and also 3 under 19,s making their senior debut, it all looks good for the future. Unfortunately the Seniors missed the finals by half a game, in a season that probably never hit top gear after round 1 it just wasn’t to be the Blues year, with a lot of off field issues that probably didn’t help the situation credit really has to be given to Coach Rick Ferraro and the players who actually

committed to the Senior side, to get so close to making finals with limited selection opportunitys and offfield sagas that were out of the Coach and players control, just led to dropping a few games in the latter part of the season, but to win the final game of the year against old foe Chelsea, was great reward for the Coach and players. Functions Presentation night 22nd September AFL Grand Final breakfast 28th Sept $80 per head fully inclusive

Red Hill Winner, winner chicken dinner. It was wins a plenty last week at the show grounds. The Ones started the game with the quiet dozen majors by the end of the first quarter and held the lead for the rest of the day. Chris Irving kicked a handful and Sticks Ross backed up with 4. Irvo, Jake Mold and Lachy Chandler got the ribbons from the judges on the day. A great way for the Ones to finish the season, but all that is swept away as the finals campaign begins against the old foe in Karingal. The Magoos have fallen short by percentage. A good win last week was not enough to get the boys into the top 5. Harry Byrt kicked the quiet 5 and Hugh Campbell snagged three. The Afro was a stand out again in the Magoos, with great support from Bromers and Holmesy. The Unders finish the season with a perfect score. Unfortunately Deavon Meadows could not field a team last week. Congratulations to Happy on the birth of his new daughter, we wish Mum and bub all the best. The Unders will start their finals campaign next week. The end of the season saw a great crowd in the clubrooms last week. Thanks to all the people who make these days happen. We are blessed to have a lot of volunteers that go that little bit further each week to make sure that the day runs well. Lets make sure we maintain the rage over this finals campaign. I said at the start of the season that a storm was brewing on the Hill. Well let the thunder begin. The Mountain Goat

Last week, with so much to play for, we had a clean sweep of wins, at home, up against traditional rival Pearcedale. A large crowd, including many former players showed up in support of club legend Shane Paterson and his 150th game. On a wet track our 19’s got the day off to a good start , leading all day and winning by 10 goals. Good players included Allen , Smith and Boag. Needing a convincing win to secure a finals bearth the reserves didn’t disappoint. With Kieran Albanese, Mitch Mathie and Zac Davies all kicking well we were far too good all day. Winning by a huge margin, the song was sung loud and proud after the game as we achieved our goal of making finals. With our senior’s finals destiny in our own control, and Pato leading us out in his 150th; we got an early jump and managed to extend our lead at every break. Jett was again damaging up forward and we combined well as a team with slick ball movement and a fierce attack at the ball. Kye Whitford is really finding his feet at this level and bagged a 5. Consistently a big game player , Pato was amongst our best. It’s always good to be the holder of the Bushman’s Cup and to reclaim it so convincingly was certainly pleasing. This week we approach our finals campaign in good form. We have a full list to choose from and relish the challenge ahead. Go Langy !! Grand Final Breakfast : Tickets available.

The last round of the season showed signs of positivity for Crib Point. The U19’s game saw the Pies and Bulls remain neck and neck for the duration. Late in the game our boys showed signs of snatching victory but were unable to get the score on the board. Jonah “Bam Ba-lam) and Jacob Gniel were important contributors all day. Next week the Crib Point U19’s elimination final will take place at Rye for a 10am start. Let’s try and get there to show support for the future of this great club! It was a tough day for the reserves on the weekend with the boys starting lineup boasting a number of new faces once again. A grim day saw the Bulls run away with a 103-point win. Tim “fingers” Malcolm was up and about around the clearances while the steadying head of Glenn Barclay helped stem the barrage of attack the defensive six were faced with. A gallant year from the reserves saw them finish up with 4 wins. The seniors ran out on the weekend celebrating yet another one of their favourite sons 200th game in Daniel White. “Whitey” has been a stalwart of the club for many years. The game began slowly for Crib with their first goal registering in the second term. 4 time b&f winner Brad Arnold was back to his best putting in a best on ground performance. Although it wasn’t enough to snare victory from Karingal. This year has been a struggle for our senior side but we are confident that development has been achieved and that next year looks much more positive.

Footy Notes Dromana Now we begin the business end of the 2018 season and what has happened in the 18 Home and Away games counts for nothing. Luckily both the Seniors and Reserves finished in double chance positions so regardless of todays result the Reserves will play again next week. It has been a great 2018 for the club with 4 Netball teams also making finals with the C Grade Netballers holding the honours by going through the season undefeated an amazing effort. In the Round 18 games against Rye our U19s couldn’t match it with the third placed Rye side going down by 75 points. The game of the day was in the Reserves with Rye trying to secure a finals berth and Dromana wanting to maintain the double chance and the first half was low scoring with Dromana leading by 1 and 2 points at the respective breaks. The Third quarter saw Dromana kick 4 goals to 1 and set up a twenty point break. The last quarter Rye threw everything at Dromana and they had narrowed the gap to 8 points on the final siren. Dromana 1sts continued their winning ways despite a slow first half to record a 10 goal victory with 5 debutants featuring. Karingal Finals Football - this is what we play all year for. This is why we run laps in 40 degree heat mid January, why we hit the beach on a rainy July Sunday morning - everything up until now has been geared towards qualifying to play finals As a club the 2018 season has been a really positive one with Senior, Reserve and U19 teams all finishing top 3, A-D grade netball also all playing finals today whilst our U17 netballers finished just outside the 4 in their 1st year and Senior Women 7th in their second year - great efforts and well done to all teams The Unders are really hitting their straps leading into finals and will look to continue that form today; Mike’s boys know that the hard work is ahead and look forward to the challenge Reserves and Seniors also have the chance to head straight to the 2nd semi today and are relishing the challenge after a big week on the track

Netball Preview - Division 2 The fine line between pleasure and pain By David Nagel Now this is what netball is all about with the Somerville Recreation Reserve to host the biggest and best day of the season – with MPNFL Division Two semi-final action set to take centre stage today. Clubs have been planning for this day ever since Crib Point and Edithvale-Aspendale walked away with last year’s A Grade premierships, with months and months of planning and preparation all coming down to this. Will Langwarrin cap off a spectacular rise up the ranks, will Crib Point make it three titles on the trot, or will Tyabb and Karingal finally hoist the cup that has narrowly alluded both clubs in recent times? They’re the big questions heading in and now, well… we’re about to find the answers. There’s a huge prize on offer in the second semifinal between Langwarrin and Crib Point today, with premiership favouritism and – more importantly – a direct passage through to the grand final at stake. The Kangaroos have been the best performed team all season, finishing two games clear at the top of the ladder and defeated the Magpies, 44-38, in their only meeting all the way back in round six. Coach Sara Drain has an enviable reputation around the region and has put together a team full of talent, mixed with a healthy dose of competitiveness. Brooke Kiely and Emily Bennet will be assigned the goalscoring duties, while Sarah Anderson, Jayde Travers and Amy Slefendorfas have been consistent performers through the midcourt. Jayde Aron has led the defensive end of the court brilliantly, with Emily Zeuschner, Kim Coulson and Rania Waller taking turns at lending a hand. The Kangas have been remarkably consistent, having just one slip up against Karingal in round 12. But today…well they take on a Magpies’ outfit that absolutely thrives at this time of year. The Magpies have won the last two grand finals against Tyabb, and head into today’s clash with that inner belief that only performing on the big stage can bring. Ebony McDermott, Tessa Moncrieff and Shaye Williams have played every game this season, while Dionne Douglas, Karly Wappett, Lily Cook and coach Adrienne Harris have also played huge roles in their second-place finish. This is going to be a thrilling contest, played at an exceptionally high standard and blended in with the pressure that only finals games can create. Langwarrin, it’s your day – you progress to the grand final with an extraordinary extra-time victory. There’ll be certainly no drop in standard on court two when Tyabb and Karingal lock horns in a first semi-final for the ages.

26

Seriously, how good is this competition when two teams of this standard are trying to avoid elimination in week one of the finals. There’ll be some real desperation on show today. Tyabb has lost the last two grand finals to Cribby, but that pales into insignificance against the Bullettes who have lost the last three Peninsula League deciders to Edi-Asp. Both teams deserve a change of luck. Tyabb scored a 46-29 victory over the Bullettes in their only meeting this season in round eight and will come in confident after a big win over Somerville last week. It was full dress rehearsal for the Yabbies, with Kylie Heib and Sarah Hose dominating in defence, Dani Slaughter, Leonie Souter and Megan Williams starring through the midcourt, and Birgitta Nemaric and Kellie Anderson finding their range in attack. The Yabbies made not one change throughout the course of the afternoon. Caitlin Watson and Keira Wills have also played huge roles for the Yabbies this season. Karingal lost to Crib Point last week but led at the first three changes to show their best is absolutely good enough to contend. Mardi Cunningham and Amelia Haugen produced a great display at the defensive end of the court while Kate Kelly-Oman, Madi Capsalis, Renee Brewster and Bridgett Barry-Murphy proved strong opposition for the Magpies midcourt. Breanna Neighbour and Abuk Kenyang will hold the keys to shooting a winning score, with coach Jess Whitfort having plenty of depth to call on if things go awry early. How do you pick this one, with two great teams fighting for survival and trying to overcome those recent years of frustration? Up goes the coin – it’s a head – it’s the Yabbies to win by one!

The athleticism of Karingal goaler Abuk Kenyang will be crucial in today’s first semi-final against Tyabb.

Netball Notes - Division 2 Somerville D Grade - What a way to finish the season, with a 42-12 victory, securing 2nd spot and a double chance in finals. The hard work starts now girls! It’s finals time and we face a very strong Karingal side. Let’s do this!!! C Grade - The C team has had a very challenging year. Every single person on my team was willing to move out of their comfort zone and to try new things and move into unfamiliar roles for the benefit of their team mates. It helps that they all like each other and have built great relationships off the court. We played a great team game against Tyabb and came away with a good win to finish the season on a high B Grade - The B Grade finished off strong in their road to finals with a 57-21 win against Tyabb. We can’t wait to see how we perform in the next few weeks, and with the way were tracking, we are definite contenders for a 4-peat!! A Grade - Well that was the season that was for the A Grade girls in 2018.... I am so proud of the girls & the resilience that have shown throughout the year. With a full team on the sidelines with injuries, the girls had to pull together something new every week, and irrespective of where we finished on the ladder this year, we were winners off the court. Finals are finally here and both our D Grade and B Grade teams will be fighting it out at our home courts!! Could it get ANY BETTER!? D Grade - 10:05am B Grade - 12:15pm Come down and get around the girls as they continue their journey towards the cup! #BRRRRK

Red Hill The U/17s finished off the season by achieving their highest score yet, proving how ready they are for finals. With a goaler/defender, Zoe Dekoning injured &resting, the remaining 9 girls all showed their strengths throughout the game. Standout player Katie Baird was undefeatable in the ring, shooting above 90% accuracy. All girls are excited &ready to go for finals Excellent win for the girls in D grade, scoring their record amount of goals. It was a great game in goals from Madi and Ash. Lucy had her best game of the season in defence, earning her, her first run in C grade. Throughout the season it’s been awesome to see the girls huge improvement. Our C grade match was not taken lightly with our opponents pushing many teams to small goal margins this season! With sickness plaguing our side the skills of four girls from our d grade & U17 side proved invaluable to take the win by 6 goals!! B grade finished off strong in their last round against Devon Meadows. Ella Mason was hard to beat in GK gaining many turnovers. As well as a strong game

28

from Katie Baird in goals & a consistent 4 quarters from everyone allowed us a 28 point win! Left our run a little late but keen for a strong 2019 season! What a way for our A grade to finish our interrupted season! Three good wins against teams above us on the ladder. The girls continued belief in their strength as a team clearly shone bright! Cannot wait to be part of the 2019 Red and White Climb Time campaign! Here we come!

Crib Point Our U/17s haven’t had an easy year. They’ve improved out of sight. We look forward to seeing them return in 2019. D Grades first half was tight but couldn’t hold out the stronger team. BOC went to Lesli. C Grade suffered a loss. Karingal were far too strong & our girls lacked intensity. BOC went to Fi. B Grade came up against a strong & disciplined side. Our girls played with a great team mentality. BOC went to Kelly. Looking to next season if this team can start the season strong they will have a good crack at finals. A Grade WHAT A GAME! Our girls went out hard from the first whistle, showing Karingal it would be a tough match. Our girls needed the win, stepped up the intensity proving they are the stronger side, playing to win & really capitalized on turnovers. They showed great patience, & a never give up attitude. They did the 1%ers for one another, which made all the difference. BOC went to Adrienne. Finals are a new ball game. Preparations change, mentalities shift & intensity is high! It’s an exciting time of year & don’t underestimate us! From a coaching perspective we have had our eyes set on the finals from the beginning of the season & we are peaking at the right time! We are thrilled at the level of competition this year & know that a lot of hard work is ahead of us! WE ARE READY! This year we have 2 teams representing the club, both defending premiership flags. C Grade play an elimination final. A Grade play Langwarrin the winner moving straight into the GF.

Tyabb D Grade didn’t get to celebrate the final match of the year with a win but left the court proud of their progress over the year. They have been a brilliant group of girls to work with who all look forward to returning in the 2019 season. Special thanks to Jenny for her enormous contribution as team manager and Megan and Claire for being brilliant captains! C grade we’re unable to finish the season on a high going down in a tough match to Somerville. Darcey led the way in the goal circle and a tough tussle at the other end saw Rhi and Chloe gain many hard earned turnovers. Although the girls didn’t make finals, their improvement over the season and the team focused culture they are creating will see them forge further ahead in 2019.

Netball Notes - Division 2 B Grade had one of their best quarters for the season in the opening quarter against a very experienced Somerville side preparing for yet another finals berth. Unfortuunately we weren’t able to match them for the entire match but it was fantastic to see some great belief showed by the girls to finish of the season playing well. A Grade proved a point on Saturday having a convincing 30 point win as we prepare for our 9th finals campaign in a row. The girls were relentless from the first whistle and showed the type of netball that we can display over the coming weeks. Some excellent and comprehensive defensive work was followed up by some concise attacking work to set ourselves up well for next week.

Dromana Finals are here…….. and to have 4 Netball sides in finals is a first for Dromana Football Netball Club. It has been a great season for the club but it doesn’t matter what has happened so far it all starts again. Finals is a different story we have done all the hard work to get here now we just need to keep it going, with U17s, D Grade and B Grade all in do or die games everything we have learnt this year we need to take on court. Congratulation to C grade who finished minor premiers and get the second chance hopefully they can have a great win and go straight through to the big one. To all coaches and players you have all worked extremely hard to get here and it is an exciting time for the Club with the Seniors and reserves also in finals. Good Luck to everyone Go Tigers

Hastings

A fine Thursday night game saw the under 17’s host a fierce Dromana. Both teams ramping it up for finals saw the scores kept low and the defensive pressure high, but managed a good win. We now head into finals and will no doubt expect the same fierce netball. Big thanks to Dromana for traveling over to our courts for the Thursday night game! Good sportsmanship all round! The sun came out in time for our last game of the season. D grade didn’t get the result they were looking for but competed strongly throughout the match. C Grade had a tough game against a well drilled Chelsea team. We have seen improvements all year and gained lots of turnovers but a tight Chelsea defense made it difficult to convert into goals. Best game all season for our WA Brooke Treuel. B grade had an awesome win, such a great game for our under 17 girls Tilly and Molly. Not the way A grade wanted to end their season, but the loss of 4 athletes from 9 is bound to have its impact. Chelsea were determined to reverse the result from earlier in the season and maximised their goaling conversions more accurately than ours.

I am super proud of this group of young girls who have played way beyond their age (average age 18 1/2) against many very experienced teams. We have already started discussions around the retention plan for season 2019 with optimism and excitement about what this team could achieve. Watch this space! Trish

Karingal And that’s a wrap for the Home and Away season 2018! Congratulations to 4 out of our 5 teams on making finals. Our U17’s finished in 5th position on the ladder, great effort for your first season girls! We travelled to Crib Point for the final round where our U17’s won our first game for the day 30 - 5. D grade finished the season with a tough contest, being level at half time. but with discipline and commitment they opened up a ten goal lead in the 3rd quarter and set themselves up to finish minor premiers and are ready for finals next week. C grade cane prepared for a battle taking on 3rd places crib point but with a convincing lead at quarter time the girls pushed ahead for a huge win giving them great confidence moving forward into finals. B grade kept up their consistent form with a solid win and securing their top two position. All players delivered a quality game and despite many rotations, put out a solid performance. A grade knew this 2nd v 3rd game was going to be a battle and it was. A tight first quarter then a strong second gave the bullettes a 6 goal lead heading into the second half. However cribby can back determined and with a seesawing scoreline the girls went down missing the chance for second position. They will head into finals against Tyabb next week. BRING ON FINALS ! GO BULLETTES!

South Eastern Women’s Football Tigers are in for a Devil of a time By Lachie Ramage

After an incredible second season of South Eastern Women’s Football, it’s now time for the action to step up another level as we head into week one of the finals. In division one Eastern Devils defeated Seaford quite convincingly last week to claim top spot on the ladder, and now have a psychological advantage over the Tigers as they head into Sunday’s Second Semi-Final at Beaconsfield. The Devils will strongly believe that they are now positioned perfectly to make a play for back-to-back flags. Emily Mcilvena has been the Devils’ main target up forward this season, whilst Chloe Hunt, Georgia Punton and Shelley Beggs have all been scoring plenty of goals. These four players all finished in the top five on the goal kicking list and this highlights the Devils’ scoring prowess. The Tigers go to options up forward this season have been Kaitlyn Carew and Alison Dowler, they will be relied upon heavily to kick the Tigers a winning score. But we’ll go for the Devils to progress through to the grand final after a 28-point victory. Cranbourne take on Mornington in the First Semi-Final. The Bulldogs have had an outstanding first season in division one and have done extremely well to make finals. The Eagles on the other hand will be out to improve on last year’s finals performance, where they bombed out in the first final. We are set for an incredibly even contest, and a perfect platform has been formed for a hero to step up from either side. Emily Rylance and Vicki Sanford have been incredibly consistent this season for the Bulldogs and will no doubt be out to put on a show in the finals. Both sides have an even spread of goal kickers with no real standouts, just who will step up when it matters? Cranbourne will step up and head to a preliminary final after an eight-point victory. In Division two Bass Coast collide with Seaford in the Second Semi-Final. Bass Coast finished the season undefeated and are in top shape after defeating the second placed Tigers by 75 points just last week. Tayla Stahl-Smith has had an incredible season for Bass Coast, finishing with 60 goals and has been in unstoppable form all year. The most frightening prospect about Bass Coast is they have five other players who finished in the top 10 in the league goal kicking. The Tigers have Lauren Field as their key-target up forward; she kicked 19 goals for the season, but know that they need others to lend a helping hand up forward if they are to be victorious this week. But Bass Coast look unstoppable – they’ll win by 51 points. The Eastern Devils and Tyabb will do battle in the First Semi-Final.

Both these sides are evenly matched and will both fancy their chances of claiming the victory. The Devils will rate themselves as a chance to get in to the Grand Final if they are to beat the Yabbies, as they have beaten the Tigers and pushed Bass Coast during the season. The Devils will look to Shae Dale and Aleesha Brindley as their main goal scorers, whilst the Yabbies will be looking for Kelly Adamson and Kylie Vigliarolo to shoulder the load up forward. It’s the Devils by 13 points. In division three Hastings clash with the Frankston Bombers in the Second Semi-Final. The Bombers pushed up to second position on the ladder in the last round, after defeating Red Hill. The Bombers will be hoping that their star forward Lindsay Tucker can continue her terrific form, as she kicked 42 goals in the regular season. The Blues have an incredibly even spread of goal kickers which has brought them great success thus far. Hastings all-round strength will see them book their place on grand final day…by 11 points. And Mornington and Pearcedale are set to lock horns for the second straight week, this time being in the First SemiFinal. The Panthers had to upset the then second-placed Bulldogs to secure a finals position, and they did that in superb fashion, keeping them goalless and sending a strong message to their rivals. Hayley Roberts has been a star for the Panthers this season and she will be hoping to step up and perform well on the big stage. The Bulldogs will be hoping that their even spread of performers can grab hold of this game and take the wonderful opportunity that sits in front of them. Success doesn’t become reality through magic; it takes a whole season’s worth of blood, sweat and tears to achieve it. Pearcedale will keep its dream alive in a four-point thriller.

A Slice of MPNFL History It’s a whole new ball game

It was not always a runaway win with Red Hill getting away early, and by half time taking control to lead by 33 points.

By Doug Dyall This week we start finals in Division Two with Saturday’s Qualifying Final at Somerville between Karingal and Red Hill before Sunday’s Elimination Final between Chelsea and Langwarrin at Rye. One thing is for certain all of these clubs have little experience of playing finals against one another. Chelsea, who has been a very successful club in its history since joining the MPFL in 1959 after coming from the old Federal League, has not played finals since 2011 when they lost the semi-final in Peninsula Division. The Seagulls’ opponent this week, Langwarrin, last made the top five in 2014 when they fell down in the Elimination Final in the same division. These two teams will be breaking new territory today when they play each other in a final for the very first time.

But a Karingal revival in the third term saw them kick three goals to one to narrow the margin to 19 points at the last change of ends. But Karingal were unable to sustain the run and Red Hill grabbed the initiative and ran out the match with a six goal to three last term. Boyd Johnston was the star for Red Hill, taking out the best-on-ground medal in front of a then record crowed that saw takings of $13,044 on the day. Tony Marchant kicked six goals for the Hillmen who had eight goal kickers contribute to the victory. Neil McKinnon and Grant Southern were the umpires for the match. The two new divisions are certainly creating new history and bringing interest back into football and we will see some great finals actions over the next month.

Langwarrin has been in the Nepean League up until 1987 and it is only in recent years that the two clubs have regularly found themselves in the same division. So it is not remarkable that they have not yet met when the big prize is on the line. In the Qualifying Final Red Hill, who has recent experience in finals, take on Karingal who have not played at this time of year since 2012. This ended a good couple of years for the club but without breaking their drought. Again, it is somewhat remarkable that these two old Nepean League clubs have only ever played one final against each other and that happened to be on the big stage in the 1990 Grand Final when Karingal had to come from fourth to play Red Hill. That match played at Frankston saw the Tim Luscombe coached Red Hill take out its first and only senior premiership, defeating the Mick Deaton led Karingal side winning 16.7.103 to 9.9.63.

Footy Preview - Division 1 So who ends where in the big shuffle? By David Nagel Even the great English writer Agatha Christie would have struggled for a storyline like this as we head into an enthralling last round of MPNFL Division One football. The game between Frankston and Rosebud is the only match-up with no bearing on finals or relegation, with Seaford’s unlikely victory over Bonbeach last week giving the Tigers one last crack at salvation. If the Tigers defeat Mornington by 67 points – 117 to 50 – they will stay in the top flight and send Simon Goosey and his Bulldogs scurrying for Google Maps to search for division two venues next year. But while that’s an unlikely scenario, the harsh reality for those in the top five is that today is crucial to their premiership hopes and dreams. Four-time reigning champion Frankston YCW is the only team locked in the top five that can’t move up or down today. But the variance in final finishing positions is quite stark for the others. Sorrento can finish first or second, Mt Eliza first to fourth, while Edi-Asp and Pines can finish anywhere from second to fourth on the ladder. Edi-Asp and Sorrento hold the key to all possibilities when the Eagles and Sharks collide at Regents Park today. Sorrento need to win to lock away top position and a crucial week’s rest, while a loss could see Mt Eliza take charge and rest its aching legs. And the prize for the Eagles is equally as huge – win and they retain the double chance, but lose and they’ll likely take on YCW in the highest-quality elimination final we’ve seen for many a long year. Given the evenness of the competition – both teams are playing with huge incentive this afternoon. The Eagles have lost two of their last four, and were unable to go with Mt Eliza last week when the Redlegs exploded in the third term. The Eagles led by seven points at the main break but were overwhelmed as the Redlegs kicked 6.1 to 2.2 to take a 16-point lead into three-quarter time. Brett Dore, Mick

James Brigden has been Mr Reliable for Sorrento this year and will get another huge role against the Eagles. Meehan, Steve Mannix and Nick Connellan did their best to lift the Eagles, but they just couldn’t find a way through one of the best defensive units in the business. And things won’t get any easier today with Sorrento sure to be fired up to secure the number-one ranking ahead of this year’s finals series. The Sharks had a comfortable time of things against Frankston Bombers last week, kicking clear with a 6.2 to 0.5 second quarter and then cruising home to victory.

Footy Preview - Division 1 Leigh Poholke was the star of the show, booting six, while Shannon Gladman, Mitch Hallahan and defender James Brigden will go in full of confidence today after impressive outings. Some of the biggest names in the competition will go head to head today in a massive encounter in the overall scheme of the competition. Sorrento has more potency up forward, and some matchwinners through the midfield, and will lock away top spot with a hard-fought 13-point victory. A four-game winning streak has Mt Eliza on the precipice of a top-three finish this season and the Redlegs can confirm that ranking against Frankston YCW at Wooralla Drive today. The Redlegs took advantage of a softish part of the draw against Bonbeach, Seaford and Rosebud before lifting the bar last week in a 22-point victory over Edi-Asp. Jordan Moncrieff was once again the focal point, kicking three, and will likely have the Stonecats’ best defender, Christian Ongarello, as his opponent this afternoon. Rob Turnbull, Tom Freeman and Luca Goonan were also effective for the Mounties, while Shane Tennant played a blinder and Kyle Docherty was impressive in his second game back from a spell. The Stonecats were workmanlike against Rosebud last week, with seven individual goal-scorers highlighting a 31-point victory over the Buds. Jacob Cheverly, Matt La Fontaine and Michael Debenham were sound four-quarter contributors, while the

reappearance of star performers in Scott Macleod and BJ Credlin will give coach Wayne Capp a positive feeling heading into finals. It’s funny how things work out, but the Stonecats are the only team inside the top five who have the luxury of looking ahead to next week and preparing for four big weeks of footy. They’re locked in fifth spot, and now just need an opponent – and some miles in the legs of Macleod and Credlin an Co – and they’ll be ready to fire. Anyone fancy taking on the Stonecats in a cut-throat elimination final? We think not! The Stonecats will also be keen to make a stand today and spoil the Redlegs’ party, but expect the home side to take a massive step towards ending a 12-year premiership drought with a 14-point victory. Seaford will need to pull a rabbit out of the hat to avoid relegation when the Tigers travel to Alexandra Park today to take on Mornington. The Tigers kept their division one dreams alive with a stunning last-quarter against Bonbeach last week – but now need their biggest and best win of the season to send Simon Goosey and his Doggies plummeting out of the big time. There are so many calculations that we could run with here but, as a rough guide, if the Tigers win by 67 points – 117 to 50 – they will stay in division one next year.

www.aflsoutheast.com.au

43

Footy Preview - Division 1 They would end on 16 points, with a percentage of 79.82, while the Bulldogs would have a 79.72 percentage to go with their four wins this season. It’s a fair-dinkum longshot – but if they can reproduce their last-quarter heroics from last week the Tigers just might be a chance. The Tiges trailed by five points at the final break but produced a 5.3 to 0.2 final term to defeat Bonbeach by 26 points. Man-mountain Matt Terech was sensational in his first game back from a spell while Ben Howlett, Sam Lonie and Zac Vansittart gave the Sharks the run around when it mattered most. Matt McCormack kicked three, while Curtis Barker looms as a key player if the Tigers are to produce a miracle this afternoon. How ironic would it be if Barker has a day out and his former Cranbourne coach, Goosey, gets relegated! But it’s going to be an extremely difficult task, because Mornington has been competitive against some quality opposition in recent times. They pushed Edi-Asp to 11 points, then defeated Mt Eliza, and have contended late in games against Sorrento, YCW and Pines. That previous sentence contains every member of this year’s final five! Joel Miller has had an outstanding season for the Bulldogs, with great support coming from the likes of Jackson Calder, Kalen Bird and Jake Smart. Calder has kicked three or more goals in nine games this season and must be stopped by the Tigers this afternoon. It’s great to have the relegation battle all come down to this – but sorry Tigers, the Bulldogs will win by 32 points and stay in the top flight of MPNFL football. Finding motivation will be the big challenge for Frankston and Rosebud today when the Bombers and Buds round out their seasons at Greg Beck Oval. These two have become accustomed to the bright lights of finals in recent times, but the rise to division one has removed the glare this year. The Buds have finished in the top two for the last three years – the Bombers top three for the last two. Frankston looked a contender after a round-13 victory over YCW, but has since lost games against Pines, Bonbeach, EdiAsp and Sorrento to just fall short of the big time. The Bombers should be mighty proud of their efforts however, with wins over six teams in the competition. Only Bonbeach, Edi-Asp and Mt Eliza have struck twice against the Bombers this year. Dale Sutton, Sam Fox, Ryan Marks-Logan and Jason Kingsbury have handled the step up in class with a minimum of fuss while Corey Micari has had a great year in the ruck. Koby Villis is one of an exciting crop of youngsters coming through, while Jason Bedford has had a really good finish to the season.

44

Dale Sutton will look to round out a strong year through the midfield with a big game against Rosebud. Statistics would show that the Bombers need to tighten up at either end of the ground to make a serious run at the premiership next year. Rosebud has done well to avoid relegation, with wins against Bonbeach, Mornington, Seaford and YCW their season highlights. They have the worst percentage in the competition so former premiership coach Nick Jewell will have some serious work to do when he takes the reins from Adrian McBean at the conclusion of today’s contest. The final siren sounds and it all starts again! Fletcher Hustwaite, Sean Downie and Rhys Pierce have been terrific for the Buds this year, while ruckman Ben Dwyer has finished strongly after an injury-interrupted season. But it’s the Bombers to prove they’re the best team not in it this year with a 32-point victory. And Pines will need to remain focussed when Paddy Swayn and his boys welcome Bonbeach to Eric Bell Reserve today. The Pythons just need to win, and hope either Sorrento defeat Edi-Asp, or YCW down Mt Eliza, to take a doublechance into this year’s finals series.

www.aflsoutheast.com.au

Footy Preview - Division 1 And if they start from second or third, and earn the luxury of throwing in a bad one – then look out! They’re a dangerous outfit the Pythons, the highest scoring team in the competition with Aaron Edwards leading the way. Edwards has made a great return from a serious knee injury last year, and cracked the half-century mark last week with a four-goal effort against Mornington. Nick Boswell and Shaun White were in good nick against the Bulldogs, while Beau Hendry, Khyal Jacobson and Tom McDermott will be keen to make sure there are no slip ups against the Sharks, who lost to lowly Seaford last week. It’s been an up-and-down season for Steve Hughes and his side, who came good late but were just too far back to make an impact. Last week’s loss to the Tigers finally killed off their finals aspirations. Gav Vassallo, Jack Williams, Gary Carpenter and Jackson Casey gave their all for the Sharks last week and would love nothing better than ruining the Python-party this afternoon. But the Pythons have too much to play for – and they’ll claim a double-chance on the back of a 34-point victory.

Footy Notes - Division 1 Mt Eliza Today we welcome the YCW FNC to “Impact Realty Park” for what should be a great finale to the Home & Away season. We send out a special welcome to our 1983 & 1998 Premiership Players & Coaches Greg Lambert & Mark “Moo” Glenn - We hope you all enjoy you day! Another great day last Saturday with all 3 teams winning important games. The U/19’s took on 2nd placed Edi-Asp and led by a couple of goals early before booting 5 goals to nil in the 2nd. We won a tight last half to run out 44 point winners. Kobe Dalais was great with his 3 goals, along with Will, with other best players being Fewster, Parks, Killian (2) and Smithy. The Reserves trailed by a couple of points in a low scoring 1st half, the 3rd term was a goal apiece, before a 3 goal to 1 last term saw the boys get up by 7 points. Harry Smith booted a couple to be amongst the best, along with Trent, Ben Farish, Kenty, AJ and Stricko. In a 3 v 2 battle, the Seniors started well with 3.6 to nil in the opening term, before Edi kicked 5 goals to nil in the 2nd to hold the advantage. After a blast at half time the boys responded with 6.1 to 2.2 in the 3rd to lead by 16. Edi reduced the margin to 10 early in the last but goals to Luca and Jordy Moncrieff sealed a 22 point win. Best players were Turnbull, Jordy, Smally, Tenno, Tommy Freeman and Happy. Social: 10k Draw tomorrow from midday - See Burgo for a last minute ticket. Quick cut & paste from my 2017 round 18 notes as we pay homage to a retiring great Travis Reints again as he plays his 300th & last game today. Travy has been an ornament to our club for many years & should be extremely proud of his contribution to the Bombers, Pearcedale & Lang Lang. When you see him today shake his hand & buy him a beer. Our mission to help the drought stricken farmers is going gangbusters with support piling up. Do your bit to help by visiting our Facebook to check out the posts & click on the link to donate. Our club presentation night where we celebrate our season & toast the excellence of our footballers & netballers is coming up soon. The social committee will have the details on Facebook and so keep a look out. Well done to each & every volunteer, member, sponsor and friend of the Bombers who make our club great each & every year. Go Bomber

Frankston Bombers Here we are at the last home & away game for 2018, gee it goes quick! After last weeks result our Seniors won’t play finals but the group should be proud of our return to the top flight. Plans are well underway for 2019 with finals front & centre in the minds of our footy department & committee, with announcements shortly. Week 1 of the finals will see our u/19 Bombers take on Mornington, make sure that we all get on board to support them. Zach has them playing great team footy, Aves, Koby, Q & Will have all had a taste of senior footy and the lads have a good record against the other finalists.

Footy Notes - Division 1 Edi-Asp Our great sponsors at HODGES REAL ESTATE bring you our club notes this week. Hodges is able to offer a full service solution that delivers on identifying and maximising your property’s potential. Contact them @ http://www.hodges.com.au/offices/hodges-mentone/ A hard fought loss for the senior boys sees us drop to 3rd on the ladder with a must win game this week to ensure a top 2 finish. The boys will out to prove they are finals contenders in 2018. Best players were B. Dore, M. Meehan, N. Connellan , L. Harris, S. Mannix, K. Gray. The twos also fell short by 7 points in a tough game and with the top 5 settled a win this week will shore up a top 4 finish. The boys are keen for finals and will give their best to continue their great season. Best players were L. Hulett, J. O’Neill, J. Heys, J. Watterson, J. Davey. The 19’s toughed it out but also couldn’t get the win. The top side were too good on the day and with a bye this week the boys will finish top 3 as they head to the finals. Best players were D. Shannon, R. Francis , L. Macquire, A. Flynn, J. Stuart, K. Hutchinson. The girl’s footy team finished their season last week and after a tough year couldn’t get a win. They will only improve for next year. The netball girls won all 4 and after this week will have all 4 teams playing finals. Want all the latest news, results and info from the club? Sorrento Last week saw our last home game, the theme on Thursday night was to make it 6 from 6 across all grades in netball and football. The goal was achieved for the first time in football/netball club history, a terrific way to finish at home for 2018. In the football it was the Scoobs that got the day off to a flyer as they continue their run of good form. They played a brand of football that had the crowd involved, running out comfortable victors as they gear up for bigger things in the coming weeks. What a great opportunity we’re presented with today against a fellow finals campaigner. Ironic it could be a glimpse of what we’ll see next week in

the Elimination. Winning form is good form so let’s bring our A game and take it into week 1 of what promises to be a great finals series. The Seniors knew the Bombers would bring some heat as their season was on the line. It was a hectic start as they threw everything at us before we were able to play some of our best football for a month. The second quarter into the wind was the turning point, arguably some of our best football for the season. The second half saw the positive signs continue as we look to sharpen up at the pointy end of the season. Like the Scoobs another great test in the Seniors today against an opponent that’s been near the top all year. Play the way we can for 4 quarters today and see if we can earn the weeks break. Thought of the week: A clear conscience is usually the sign of a bad memory!

Seaford Well what a gutted feeling it was even though the seniors were able to break the long stretch of losses. For those who weren’t aware as the sire sounded our young star full back went down with a knee injury. At the time of writing this, I’m still waiting to hear news about the extent of the damage to Dylan Howlett’s knee but obviously fingers are crossed throughout the whole club. On to the good news and that we were able to snare 3 from 3 wins for the first time for the season. The 19s continued their improvement in the 2nd half of the season with another convincing win and will look to make today a 4th win in the 5 matches which would set a great foundation for 2019. It looks like we will be spending a bit of time in Mton the next few weeks as our reserves and A+B grade sides will contest the finals here for the 1st two weeks of finals. Will have to wait and see if Sat or Sunday for the boys after todays game but the Netballs will be here on the Sunday. To our Rettes finals campaign & firstly congrats on finishing both divisions in top 2 spot. Considering the amount of injuries we have once again experienced for the season, it’s been a brilliant effort with the management of the sides to ensure we were able to be so competitive. Rettes finals take place Sunday at Beaconsfield. Div 2 v Bass Coast 11am Div 1 v Eastern Devils 3pm Holm Park Reserve, Beaconsfield Best of luck ladies.

Footy Notes - Division 1 Pines

The final home and away game of 2018. Never seen the competition this close and isn’t this what we all wanted? The 3 sides that got promoted last year have held their own with Sorrento holding onto the top position. The 3 sides that went to Nepean are all featuring in the finals. Tyabb won 6 games, as did Devon Meadows. So tell me again, what is wrong with divisional football? A great last round today hosting Bonbeach. Expect competitive games in all 3 games and expect the drinks to be flowing as we celebrate a 1978 reunion, the $2,500 draw, the cricket club launch and the final games for our netballers for 2018. Should be a ripper day. To all the supporters, sponsors, life members and people that follow this great club. The club is thankful for all your help in seeing us through years that have been very hard work with seemingly not much to show. Thanks for sticking with us. If you haven’t provided your email address you should as the weekly round up will continue post the football season, as we’ve got a lot of work being done outside of the general view of football and netball. Enjoy the games today and get ready for a ride we haven’t experienced for some time.

some really good football to go down by 3 goals. There was a lot to take out from the game, our overall team defence is good unfortunately at times we got pulled apart by silly turnovers which is almost impossible to defend. It’s very encouraging to see the boys play some exciting football and taking it up to the best sides in the competition to show we aren’t to far away, just a bit more polish and work we’ll get there. Let’s finish off the season with a 3 wins! A big thank you to all the volunteers who help around the club to make it work & to all our club sponsors who support our the club year in and year out. We can’t do it without you!! Go Doggies!!! WOOF WOOF

Frankston YCW

Mornington Welcome to Seaford FC to the kennel today for the last H&A game for season 2018. We have our $10,000 draw upstairs starting at 6pm - spo make sure you have your ticket... In the Unders it was a do or die clash against Pines to keep our finals hopes alive. The boys dug deep and got the job done. The game was played in such high spirits by both teams. Fast moving and very defensive at times. Well done to the boys on the game they played & we look forward to Seaford today for what will be another tough game. In the Ressies the boys brought the intensity early, let them back in with some quiet periods and then couldn’t get the job done when needed. Disappointing to go down by a point but we had our chances and just didn’t play smart enough when required. In the Seniors we came up against the in form Pines & played

Today we are welcomed by Mt Eliza FNC for the final round of 2018. Last week the Pres invoked “Happy Hour” due to a clean sweep, well done to all involved. The Unders did what they had to do recording a resounding victory. Efficiency in front of goal provided great reward for the work performed up field. Tom Baker 9 majors and Josh O’Toole 7 majors were best with Andrew Kelly. A good start enabled the two’s to secure a close but concisive victory. A top 3 spot is still on the radar. It was a sublime blend of old and new that got the boys over the line. Trent Cowled turned back the clock in his milestone game, ably supported by Brendan Marchmont and Charlie Patterson. Chappy stretched his lead to 12 in the goal kicking. To allow the opposition only 2 goals for the afternoon speaks volumes for the one’s defensive unit. Glimpses of the style of football required was evident throughout and will need to be further developed for sustained success. Chev, Onga and Laffa were best. It would be remiss of this scribe not to acknowledge efforts of all those involved with this club throughout the 2018 season. From the early risers who, through cold winter

Enjoy today and the finals campaign that follows you have earnt it

Rosebud For the first time in many years we won’t be competing in finals which unfortunately makes this week our last game for the season for all 3 teams. We have been close all season and with the knowledge and experience we gained from competing in Div one this year next year we will turn those narrow losses into wins in 2019. Thank you to everyone who has contributed to getting our teams on the park in 2018 from Coaches, players, trainers, sponsors, volunteers and supporters we hope you have enjoyed the season and we look forward to seeing everyone back in 2019. This is Adrian and Luke’s last games as coaches of our Senior and Development football teams. Both are ripping blokes that have put in a huge effort this year and we wish them all the best for the future. Our trip to YCW last week didn’t result in any wins but it was a good effort by all teams in very wet and cold conditions. Today is a big opportunity to finish off the season on a winning note as we take on the Frankston Bombers on their home turf.

All members, volunteers, supporters and sponsors are warmly invited to get back to the Club tonight to join with the players and coaches to reminisce about the year that was and for the counting of the votes for the Club Best & Fairest (up to approx. round 14). We hope to see the rooms full to mark the end of the season. Also make sure you lock in the Annual Presentation Dinner to be held at the Memorial Hall on Saturday 22nd September. Book your tables early. Go Buds!

Netball Preview - Division 1 The fun begins a little early By David Nagel

Finals are still a week away but the quality contests begin in earnest this afternoon with four of the top-five teams locking horns in a stunning finish to the home-and-away season. Top-of-the-table Edi-Asp round out its preparations with a visit from third-placed Sorrento, while Seaford – sitting second - travel to Mornington today in a perfect tune-up ahead of next week’s finals series. And fourth-placed Rosebud has the destiny of its season in its own hands, needing to defeat Frankston at Greg Beck Oval this afternoon to guarantee itself a place in next week’s first semi-final at Mornington. The game between Edi-Asp and Sorrento should be an absolute cracker, with the Eagles defending a 13-game winning streak against one of their biggest challengers this season. The Sharks are certainly no mugs having won their last five games on the trot. What a wonderful record the Eagles have built up over the last five years, losing the 2013 grand final by one goal to Mt Eliza before winning four consecutive titles. The Eagles defeated YCW in 2014 before Karingal became the victim for three years on the trot. The Bullettes are in a different division this year, but the Eagles have a real challenge in front of them with Seaford, Sorrento and Rosebud rounding out a quality-quartet of title contenders. The Eagles were untroubled last week against Mt Eliza, winning 71-24, with coach Claire Houben throwing some different combinations onto the court. Alex Ball, Anne Leeds, Caris MacInnes, Eliza McGuigan, Emily Patterson, Riley Turnbull and Christina Vickery all had a change of clothes across the course of the afternoon. Brianna Hollis (C) and Nicole Lock (WA) were also stellar performers for the Eagles. The Sharks also had a big win against Frankston last week and won’t be daunted by the challenge. Defenders Bec Kelly, Kate Youlten and Gemma Grant are a super-determined group while Briana O’Hehir, Ash Gladman and Danni Taylor will be keen to mix it with the Eagles’ midcourt. This could be a grand final preview – and it’s the Eagles to win by four. Another serious threat, Seaford, will need to be on its toes when it tries to protect a second-placed finish against an inform Mornington today. The Tigers have been a little up and down of late, but have some star quality that could quite easily take them all the way. The list is endless with Rachel Cosans, Chelsea Robertson, Nichelle Liepa, Kara Hargrave and gun-goaler Ash Mitchener just some of the players who are looking to take them to the next step. The Tigers have been close to glory in the past – and will be determined to win it this time around.

Mornington has won four of its last five games, with Sarah Nash starring through the midcourt and Candace Page, Sophie Baker and Alex Newton driving some high-standards in defence last week against Pines. And they’ll be tested again today – with the Tigers to win a high-standard contest by 10 goals. Rosebud should cement a top-four position today when the Buds take on a familiar foe in Frankston. The Buds were involved in a really good game against YCW last week, with never more than a goal the difference at the first three breaks before the Stonekittens won by two. Players like Beth Leach, Courtney McLennan, Emma White and Sally Hunter will be better for the experience, and it should narrow their focus ahead of finals. Frankston would love to spoil the party today, with Emma Mason, Louise Brittain, Sarah Muston and Blair Anderson all good form – but the Buds should be too good. They’ll play finals this year alright, on the back of a 13-goal victory. Frankston YCW should end its season with a nine-nine record after a win over Mt Eliza today. Tamara Bucca, Ash Whitnell, Carly Withers and Lyshae Barry were terrific against Rosebud last week in one of their best wins for the season. The Redlegs were soundly defeated by Edi-Asp last week but Bayley Wells, Ellie Russo and Jamie O’Hare showed enough to suggest the Mounties will be right on the job today. But the Stonekittens will take some great confidence into the off-season, winning their third game in a row with a 15-goal victory. And Pines could jump from ninth to seventh on the ladder if the Pythons can get over the top of Bonbeach at Eric Bell Reserve. Merinda Hale, Maddi Blackburn and Ngaire Tufuga will be key players for the Pythons, while Theresa Blaauw, Steph Coy, Sarah Gales and Zoe Summers will be keen to finish Bonbeach’s season on a high. This should be a close game - and it’s the Pythons to win by three.

Ashlea Gladman will be a key player for Sorrento when the Sharks take on ladder-leaders Edi-Asp today.

THANK YOU What a way to end our home game season with four wins, first time ever for us. The Bombers came to challenge & all the games were dynamic & physical. It was great to see all players give it their best for their wins. Congratulations to A’s who will play finals & to D’s making it into the top four, let’s hope it finals for you to. B Grades game was the best come back we have seen - 8 goals down to win by 1! A Grade best on Ash Gladman, Bree O’Heir & Dom Taylor B Grade best on Tayla Harris, Sophie Phillips & Rachel Day C Grade best on Macy Hall, Grace Vaughan & Ally Hallahan D Grade best on Holly Clark, Emily Opie & Lily Davis This has been a huge year for the Sharks with a massive effort by everyone to embrace & make the changes works. We would like to thank the people who put in the effort week in week out to make sure everything is there & runs smoothly. To our tireless committee who went above & beyond this year David Croad, Anne-Marie Croad, Athena Hallahan, Alison Phillips, Kerri Wiggs, Emma Ring, Jackie Voigt & Katy Watts. To our results reporter, parents (drivers), game day scorers, timers, voters & supporters who braved searing heat to freezing winds & torrential rain. The elements certain tested everyone this year & your cheers, support & help was greatly appreciated. To our team of umpires Charlee, Sharon, Tarryn, Shirley, Narelle, Holly, Marilyn & Lily. This is an incredibly demanding job & we thank you for your dedication & commitment each week. To our coaches Alana, Sophia, Danni & all their assistants Shelly, Bec, Rachel, Bree & Kate. Edi-Asp The Frankston International Round 18 v Sorrento. We would like to thank Phil & Lynda from the Frankston International for their continued support of our Sporting Club!. Not only do Frankston International supply superb catering for all our club functions, they are the only accommodation in Frankston with reception open 24

hours a day for guests and have a licensed restaurant and bar serving breakfast & dinner. Conveniently located in the Frankston Central Activities Area, Frankston International is a terrific place to stay, enjoy a night out or to run a business conference. Give Phil or Lynda a call on 9781 3444 to discuss their full range of fantastic services!. Last week we played Mt Eliza indoors at Toorak College. It always seems to happen that once we go inside to avoid the rain, the sun starts to shine! It was good to play in comfort & the top of the table clashes were great games. C grade went down after a decent fight with bad passing & poor decision making, proving costly. This week we are looking forward to the last round of the season proper & what a ripping last home game! Last time we played Sorrento, all games were fiercely competitive so we look forward to this weeks games leading into the final series! All teams will also be wearing black arm bands today in memory of Phil Cox who was taken suddenly & far too young. Our deepest condolences to Marcia, Rachel & Angie & families at this very sad time. Good luck to all Eagles playing this weekend! Soar Eagles!!

Pines Last week saw us take on Mornington at their home court, where we battled against all four Melbourne seasons in one day! D Grade did well with a depleted side and many girls playing out of position. However they stuck together and played out the game well. C Grade was the most depleted of them all and a huge thanks to many of the D Grade girls who backed it up and played 2 full games for the day. B Grade was by far the game of the round. It was close the entire way and our girls stuck to their game plan and earnt a gutsy 2 goal win! A Grade is full of injuries and again a big thanks to many B Grade girls who stepped up and filled in. All the girls should be proud of their efforts, showing a significant improvement on their results from last time they met with Mornington. This week we take on Bonbeach at home where we are confident we can take 4 from 4! A Big thanks to our Major sponsors this season, Chelgrave, Sandhurst Roofing and Tony Messina! Your support is always appreciated.

Netball Notes Division 1 Frankston YCW

Mornington

The A grade girls displayed a great team effort last week to win by 2 goals against Rosebud. They started strong and finished strong, trusting in one another and treasuring centre passes and turnovers. Every girl worked hard making the most of all opportunities. Defensive pressure was once against very strong, transition down the court was smart and the attacking end combined beautifully showing patience. B grade also had a great 54 - 20 win with a stellar first quarter of 18 - 3. Defenders took every play and pass as an opportunity to shine and made the opposition work extra hard for the goals. With all players contributing to the win, best on could have gone to a number of players, however the goalers couldn’t be faulted therefore BOC goes to Abbey for a great consistent game start to finish. C grade finally had a full squad which helped lead them to a 30 point win. Every quarter there was a line change up and the girls were able to adapt and continue to build on each quarters performance. BOC goes to Tyler who took on feedback to play one of her best halves of netball to date. After a sloppy start, the D grade girls managed to pull back together and have two stronger quarters. Rosebud had definitely improved since last time we met, and it was a good reminder to us that we cant slack off to take the court without any aggression. BOC goes to Chelsea for being such a stellar member of our team and for some great shots and rebounds! 4 wins for the day!

D Grade had a convincing win over the Pines on Saturday taking home a 25 goal win. Ruby starred & sparkled in the mid court which earned her Best On , closely followed by Lucy. Sam also stood up again with a great goaling game & a brilliant defensive game, she was a pleasure to watch! We had the opportunity to try out a few different combinations all over the court in preparation for the finals which gave me confidence in our depth. A special shout out to Vice Captain Pippa who had an impressive quarter in GS!! C Grade had a huge win by over 30 goals. We had big changes trying different combinations coming into finals. Izzy was best on, she had 60 attempts at goal, 38 goals and 22 misses. Well done girls B Grade had another tight game this week against a very physical Pines. The girls had a brilliant 3 quarters then fizzed out in the last, losing their composure on the court. Pines beat the girls by 2 goals. My player of the match was again Jess Gordon who was dominant in the defence end A Grade also had an physical game against Pines, but the girls were well and truly up for the challenge beating pines 45-29. We were a little inconsistent at the post this week but still put up up enough to keep us well in front of our opposition. My player of the match was Sophie Baker who had an outstanding game in defence, combining well with both Alex and Candace. Good luck today to all teams Go Doggies

Rosebud Today is a big opportunity for our A grade team to lock in a finals berth after a small hiccup against YCW last week. The Netball courts at the Bombers ground is a great venue to watch the netball and is very close to the footy ground so make sure you get down and support the girls! Thank you to all the coaches and support staff for your help this year, it’s a big effort getting four Netball teams on the court every week. A big thank you to our Netball Manager Alison Raphael who has made another significant contribution to the Club this season and we would love to hear from anyone who would be interested in taking on this rewarding position on in 2019 with Ali deciding to step down at the end of the season. See below for a summary of last week’s results against YCW Make sure everyone gets back to the Club tonight for the Club Best & Fairest Vote Count for all football & netball teams (up to approx. Round 14) and to reminisce about the year that was. D grade, lost 41-13. Best – Abbey Hepner, Alana Duck C grade, lost 53-23. Best – Gemma Coucaud, Liz Zuric B grade, lost 54-20. Best – Meredith Woods, Ash Farrelly A grade, lost 56-54. Best – Bethany Leach, Courtney McLennan Go Buds!

Netball Notes Division 1 Frankston Bombers D grade went into the game as hot as the sales on Range Rovers. Cheeks was giving hip&shoulders to get to the front for the new Gucci clutch - too bad Cara got there first. El was running around as excited as a Pomeranian in their new outfit. Sorrento just proved that their Lamborghinis were too quick for us. C grade were ready for a fine dining experience. The caviar wasn’t sitting well with Holly so she kept her distance. Sez didn’t want to take her new Cartier watch off, resulting in a broken wrist. Beth was looking mighty fine in her Kookai pants, unlucky for us, Sorrento’s Dee were too stylish. B grade stepped into their Louboutin heels&didn’t look back, our defenders were plucking rebounds like the last pair of Gucci sneakers in their size, whilst our shooters were celebrating goals just like if the Conti were to reopen! The final quarter saw us working hard to snatch up everything from Vik & Woods but Sorrento just had too much money.A grade began slow, whilst Sorrento had already shopped the main strip! Pol in C was like looking at your newest beach house purchase, what a vision! Blair was a winner in Dee&was a certainty to celebrate with a $920 bottle of Shiraz from Hotel Sorrento. Em kept her cool all game but sadly wasn’t offered a chopper ride for her shooting! Sorrento were too good in the end, leaving us thinking “if I were a rich girl” Our last game for the season sees us celebrate an absolute club legend Tahls in her 150th game! Get around her! Go Netball! #COR
