PROUD PARTNERS OF
AFL South East By John Anderson On behalf of AFL South East I would like to welcome you all to one of the biggest and busiest weekend’s on the regional calendar. This is the only weekend where all six leagues under the AFLSE banner – FDJFL, MPNFL Div 1 and 2, SEFNL, SEJ and SEWF – participate in finals at the same time, with some finishing, some continuing, and some beginning their finals campaigns. What a huge week it has been for junior football across the region, with awards nights held for both the FDJFL and SEJ on Wednesday and Thursday night respectively, culminating with a huge day of grand final action this Sunday. It’s staggering to think that 40 grand finals will be played at six venues, with the FDJFL hosting 18 games at Lloyd Park and Frankston Park, while the SEJ will conduct 22 games at Casey Fields, Clyde, Endeavour Hills and Pakenham. Congratulations to all clubs that have made it through to grand final day, and to the host clubs mentioned earlier – thank you for dedication to junior football. Finals begin for both MPNFL Division One and SEFNL this weekend, while MPNFL Division Two and SEWF back up for week two after wild weather tested the resilience of everyone involved in both football and netball last weekend. Wild winds, hail storms, and freezing cold conditions made life tough for everyone, but we survive and move on to a much better looking forecast this weekend. Despite the poor conditions, some grand final positions have already been locked away. Congratulations to Crib Point for making it through to the MPNFL Division Two A Grade Grand Final, and to Karingal for a great effort to qualify teams in B, C and D Grade. Pearcedale will also play a part on grand final day with its 17-under team having a big win over Hastings last week. In SEWF, Eastern Devils, Bass Coast and Hastings have two weeks to prepare for the biggest game of the season after making it through in divisions one, two and three respectively. This weekend is so exciting – with so many great games scheduled across the region. In SEFNL, arch rivals and winners of the last three premierships, Berwick and Cranbourne play in the qualifying final, while Officer plays its first final in 14 years when it takes on Beaconsfield in the elimination final at Berwick. In MPNFL Div.2 , Dromana and Red Hill play for a grand final berth while long-time rivals Karingal and Langwarrin will meet for the first time ever in a finals series. That’s quite remarkable when you consider the two clubs have competed in the same competition for 34 of the last 49 years! And what a blockbuster weekend we have in store in MPNFL Division One.
Two powerhouse clubs, Edi-Asp and Frankston YCW, will fight for survival in the elimination final while the qualifying final between Mt Eliza and Pines should be a great contest. The Redlegs have been consistently near the top of the ladder all season while Pines snuck into the top three in round 18 for the first time this season. Throw in netball contests between four great teams in EdiAsp, Sorrento, Seaford and Rosebud, and we have a great weekend of competition in store. I ask everyone who attends this finals series, the coaches, officials, players and spectators, to keep one thing at the forefront of their mind while at the finals. Respect the game - this is sport - this is fun! The expectation is that the game is treated in a respectful manner both inside and outside the fence. Players should always play by the rules and support and encourage their teammates. To the umpires who have been selected to officiate in these big games, congratulations on your appointments and we wish you well. Football and netball are two difficult games to officiate. Split-second decisions are made and we implore the sporting community as a whole to respect the umpire’s decision at all times. To our major partners, thank you for your ongoing support across all six of our leagues. Your support makes the competition what it is today. Please take a close look at the Partners spread across our hard copy and digital records, and websites, and please support them as they have supported our great games. We are also excited to be working closely with GameFace during this year’s finals series, bringing a greater user experience to our regular printed record. Game reviews and previews, club notes and welcome messages will all be available on video, complementing our hard-copy editions. Download the GameFace App, or go to www.aflserecord. com.au to see digital content for the FDJFL, SEJ and SEWF finals series. John Anderson Region General Manager AFL South East

AFL Vic Country AFL VICTORIA EXTENDS TAC PARTNERSHIP CEO Steven Reaper wants Regional Commissions such as AFL South East to play an important role in reducing deaths and injuries on our roads after AFL Victoria announced the extension of its 27-year partnership with the Transport Accident Commission (TAC). The announcement will ensure the TAC’s Towards Zero message continues to be promoted to the wider Victorian football community. The partnership extension will utilise the reach of the broader grass roots football community to engage clubs through road safety education and training programs, and spectators with a TAC presence and activities at games across the state. The extension of the AFL Victoria partnership means that the TAC will no longer be affiliated with the under-18 talent pathway. Reaper said the extended partnership enabled even greater avenues for the TAC to deliver their important messages to communities right across the state. “Via this new partnership we will work with the TAC, our commissions, leagues and local clubs to help prevent deaths and serious injuries on our roads,” Reaper said. “Footy clubs are at the heart of every Victorian community, with road safety education and awareness to now be taken to more than 170,000 participants and 78,000 volunteers involved in 1100 clubs across Victoria.
In 2017 safety barriers were hit more than 1,700 times. Each time a safety barrier is hit, people are saved from potential life changing injuries or death. As part of the Towards Zero plan, safety barriers are being installed on Victoria’s most high risk regional roads because they reduce the chances of head-on and run off road crashes by 85%. These roads are deemed high risk because of the combination of higher travel speeds, road conditions and longer journeys. It’s simple. The more safety barriers, the more lives that can be saved. TAC CEO Joe Calafiore said local football clubs were the hub of their communities and an ideal partner to help work Towards Zero – Victoria’s plan to reduce the number of lives lost and serious injuries on our roads. “We’re rapt to be taking road safety to local football and netball clubs, which have such a big community presence, particularly in regional areas which remain tragically overrepresented in the number of deaths on Victorian roads,” Mr Calafiore said. “Teaming up with AFL Victoria will play an important role in encouraging people to practice safe driving and appreciate that everyone has a role to play in making our roads safe.”
“We have had a fantastic relationship with the TAC through our U18 talent programs, and they have played a major role in supporting and educating players in the competition since its inception. “The next phase is to create even more opportunities for everyone involved in football clubs, whether you are a player, coach, volunteer or supporter, to play a role in supporting Towards Zero.” The TAC is playing an important role in trying to reduce the number of accidents in regional Victoria through the installation of safety barriers.

Drawn Finals
No finals in the MPNFL will be replayed. In the case of a draw, extra time will be played. If scores are level at the completion of the fourth quarter the field umpires shall direct the goal umpires to confirm the correct score. • Coaches are not permitted to address their players between the end of the fourth quarter and the start of extra time, nor between any periods of extra time. • Once scores are confirmed the ball shall be returned to the centre of the ground and the game will continue for two five-minute halves (with time on). • Each team shall kick in the same direction as they did in the fourth quarter for the first half of extra time. Teams will change ends for the second half of extra time. • If scores remain level after two five-minute periods, a further two five-minute periods (with time on) will be played with clubs changing ends after the first fiveminute period. • This process will continue until there is a result.
Netball In the event of a draw in a final, at the end of the game when scores are tied there is a two (2) minute break during which time there may be substitution and/or team changes. • At the end of the two (2) minute break, there shall be a further 2 x 5 minute halves played for 15 minute games and 2 x 3 minute halves for 12 minute games. The Centre Pass is taken by the team entitled to the next Centre Pass. • There is a 1 minute interval at half time and teams change ends. • During both of these intervals substitutions and team changes can be made. • In the event of a draw remaining at the end of extra time, play shall continue until one team has a two (2) goal advantage. No substitutions or team changes are allowed.

Footy Preview - Division 1 Tipsters
Heavyweights go toe-to-toe
By David Nagel Two clubs that have shared the last eight premierships in the top flight of the MPNFL will go head-to-head on Saturday when Edithvale-Aspendale and Frankston YCW collide in a classic elimination final at Chelsea. We’re obviously flattering the Eagles with that statement, with their last premiership success in 2013 being dwarfed by the unbelievable achievement of the Stonecats – who have won every other flag since 2010. Seven flags in eight years is a remarkable run of success , and one that has built an aura that the Stonecats will need to carry as a 23rd player this time around. Winning this year’s premiership – well it would be the greatest chapter in a magnificent storyline. The Stonecats, who have seven times finished top and once second in the last eight years, begin their campaign from fifth placing - unchartered territory for this group of players. Champions like Ash Eames, Craig Nankervis and Tony Lester – who have won 19 flags between them – have retired since last year’s grand final win over Bonbeach, leaving star players like Kyle Hutchison, Byron Barry, Christian Ongarello and skipper Jie Coghlan to carry the can. They run into an Eagles outfit that should have finished top three. A player points indiscretion in round one, and a subsequent loss of premiership points, has cost the Eagles second place on the ladder. That form would suggest a grand final appearance is on the cards with star performers like Brett O’Hanlon, Steve Mannix, Brett Dore and Sam Monaghan sure to be desperate to elevate the Eagles to those lofty heights. It’s hard to believe that one of these teams won’t be with us when we awake on Sunday morning – ready for another cracking contest between Mt Eliza and Pines in the qualifying final at Mornington. The Pythons…well they’ve done what Pythons are known for! Most members of the Python family are ambush predators, in that they typically remain motionless in a camouflaged position, and then strike suddenly at passing prey. They generally attack when feeling hungry or provoked. They’re hungry alright, for success, after Leigh Carpenter led the club to its last premiership in 1994, and struck with real venom last week, bouncing into the top three for the first time this season. The guns fired, with Aaron Edwards booting seven and Paul Scanlon in great form through the middle. The Redlegs are a very even team with Blaine Coates, Jordan Moncrieff, James Hammond and Kyle Docherty all offering something different in key areas of the ground. The battle between the two leading goal-kickers in the competition – Edwards and Moncrieff – will go a long way towards deciding the outcome. To view the full preview of both finals, including comments from coaches, download the GameFace App or go to www.aflserecord.com.au and follow the prompts.

Netball Preview - Division 1 Finals bring a certain level of attraction By David Nagel Do opposites really attract? For many years people have been unsuccessful in trying to answer that question, when all they needed to do was be patient and take a look at week one of the 2018 MPNFL Division One Finals Series. Our four remaining premiership hopes, EdithvaleAspendale, Sorrento, Seaford and Rosebud all have very different stories to tell over the last five years as they head to Mornington this Sunday. Edi-Asp, the four-time reigning champion, was stung by the pain of a one-goal loss to Mt Eliza in the 2013 grand final before completing a clean-sweep of the last four years…the elite. Sorrento has not finished higher than tenth since 2013, and didn’t even field a team in 2016 before finishing in bottom place last year with a 0-16 record…the battlers. Seaford has been steadily building, finishing seventh, sixth and fifth, before ending the last two years in third place and bowing out at the preliminary final stage of the season…the proven challenger. And finally Rosebud, one of the hottest teams in the competition over the last three months, who has lost just two its last 12 games to improve on a five-year high ranking of sixth last year. The Buds’ best is good enough, but can they defeat the three best teams in the competition – one after the other – and take out an amazing premiership success…the miracle hunters. So there’s your answer – opposites do attract! The second semi-final between Edi-Asp and Sorrento should be an absolute corker. The Eagles have been the most consistent team all season, while the Sharks put their flag in the ground with a confidence-boosting 45-35 victory over the Eagles just last week. Sorrento is barely recognisable from last year, with Ash Gladman and Gemma Grant the only players from that winless 2017 team to make a significant contribution this year. Maddi Graham, Bec Kelly and Brianna O’Hehir have been the rocks that Alana Schaeche has built her team around, while Shelley O’Donnell, Hannah Mundy and former EdiAsp star Kate Youlten have also had big roles to play. What a netball club Edi-Asp has built, with the opportunity today to have all four grades make a direct progression through to the grand final. They finished top of the ladder in A, B and C Grade and finished second in D. The club’s coaches, led by Claire Houben, have done a fantastic job of keeping the club at the top of its game.
22
The Eagles have a core group that know each other so well, with Emily Patterson, Caris MacInnes, Brianna Hollis, Nicole Taylor and Christina Vickery all fully understanding of what’s required at the pointy end of the season. They know the size of the challenge – Sorrento proved it last week – but that innate ability to dig deep and win big games of netball will see the Eagles through to the grand final. They’ll win by two goals. The first semi-final between Seaford and Rosebud is also a very enticing affair, with both teams full of belief and fully expecting to be playing again next weekend. The Tigers have triumphed in the last two first semifinals, defeating Mornington and Mt Eliza, but haven’t been able to take that next step and get through to the season decider. Coach Meagan Dell made three key signings in the off season, with Alesina Toleafoa, Tracey Dell and Kara Hargrave all having the impact that Meagan would have hoped for – particularly at the defensive end of the court. Tracey Dell and Hargrave played key roles in Narre Warren’s emergence as a finals force in SEFNL, and will be keen to make their mark against the Buds. What a ride Rosebud has been on this year. The Buds have a fantastic team spirit, a competitive one to boot, that has seen them rise to become one of the most impressive units in MPNFL netball. Coach Nicole Hadgkiss has had some great support this year, with Nicole Chianta, Beth Leach, Millie McDermott, Courtney McLennan, Lauren Robinson and Emma White taking the Buds back to finals after a lengthy absence. The midcourt battle should be even, but Seaford’s stellar cast in defence will make life difficult for the Buds and lead to a six-goal Tigers’ victory.

A Slice of MPNFL History By Doug Dyall The two new divisions in the MPNFL have certainly thrown up some new scenarios in each week of the finals - and we are still only two weeks in. Taking a look at the two games in Division Two, first we have Langwarrin up against Karingal in the first semi-final. It will be the first time ever that these two former Nepean League teams have met at the business end of the season which is remarkable considering both teams shared the one competition from 1969, when Karingal joined the league, to 1993 when Langwarrin was promoted to Division One. So that is 25 seasons, not to mention recent years when the both teams were in the Peninsula Division from 2009 to 2017. In the second semi-final, Red Hill and Dromana have only had five meetings in finals with the first being way back in 1935 in B Grade of the MPFL when Red Hill won the second semi 16 .12.108 to Dromana 7.11.53. The next meeting was the 1939 first-semi in B Grade when Red Hill again took the points 12.11.83 to 8.16.64. The next meeting was the 1940 grand final where Dromana won 10.19.79 to Red Hill 10.15.75 in a grand battle played with 16 a side due to the war. Again, these sides crossed paths in the 1946 first-semi when Dromana evened the score at two all winning 9.14.68 to 7.11.53. It would be 37 years before the two teams meet for the fifth and last time in a final when Dromana won the 1983 Nepean first semi-final, 15.16.106 to Red Hill 7.16.58. Dromana was coached by John Aldridge who kicked three goals as did D. Cairns and P. Crozier but the star was N. Watson with four goals. Red Hill, under Mick Pierce, were well served by Steve Trott and P. Kingsbury with two goals each. Dromana went on to lose the preliminary final to Crib Point. So Dromana currently leads with a three-two finals record.
In Division One games, we start with the qualifying final between Mt Eliza and Pines who have met only four times in finals history with three of those matches coming in the past three years. The first meeting saw Pines win 27.17.179 to Mt Eliza 14.15.89 in the 1987 Division One preliminary final and it took almost 30 years for a rematch, when in the 2016 qualifying final Mt Eliza took the honours 18.8.116 to 8.7.55. They repeated the dose a fortnight later in the preliminary final, winning 18.22.130 to 6.5.41. Then in last year’s elimination final Pines won 15.15.105 to Mt Eliza 2.8.20 - so that makes it two all going in to today’s game. In the elimination final it is two heavyweights going at it with Edi-Asp going up against YCW in what could be the toughest battle of the series. Will the chance of five-consecutive flags fall away or can YCW be the smoky and find the form that has been missing for much of the season? These two sides have met on seven occasions, the first back in 1987 - the first of the MPFNL - in the preliminary final when they fought out a draw, Edi-Asp 15.11.101 to YCW 16.5.101. Edi Asp won the replay 23.12.150 to 15.8.98. It was 16 years later when YCW won the Peninsula preliminary final 12.15.87 to Edi Asp 10.10.70. They won again two years later in the first-semi 19.17.131 to 13.15.93. But in the 2009 preliminary final it was Edi-Asp turning the tables, winning 17.22.124 to YCW 13.12.90. Edi Asp again won in 2013 preliminary final in a close one, 11.17.83 to 11.12.78. The last meeting was in last year’s second-semi when YCW won 9.10.64 to Edi-Asp 6.11.47 on their way to a fourth consecutive flag. So, after seven finals contests, the ledger stands at three wins each and one draw. All goes well for a great weekend of finals football.
Edi-Asp won a preliminary final replay against YCW on its way to the 1987 premiership.

Footy Preview - Division 2 Tipsters
Tigers are on the prowl By David Nagel Dromana begins the quest for its first premiership success since 2013 when the Tigers meet Red Hill in a blockbuster second semi-final clash at Thomas Barclay Oval in Hastings. The Tigers, who finished four games clear at the top of the table, sat back last week and took a close look at the Hillmen who progressed to this stage with a 32-point victory over Karingal. The Hillmen kicked 4.3 to 0.2 in the final term, overcoming shocking conditions and a tough opponent to score an impressive first-up finals victory. The Hillmen had star players step up at key moments, with two-time league best and fairest winner Chris Irving playing a more prominent role through the midfield, with Jonah Siversen and Aidan Marchesani orchestrating a typically frugal defensive effort. Harry Wynn-Pope and Josh Mold were also impressive, while Tom McEncroe provided the x-factor kicking two important goals including a momentum changer late in the third term. So can the Hillmen throw a spanner in the works and roll the Tigers today? They’ve done it before, winning a cracking round-nine contest by six points at Red Hill, and then jumped the Tigers in their round 16 encounter. The Hillmen kicked 5.5 to 0.5 in the opening term before the Tigers fought back, kicking seven goals in the third term to take the lead before running away to a 23-point victory. That win was oh so impressive, with Beau Cosson structuring up well behind the contest and Reece Wilde, Sam Geurts, Josh Bateman and Andy Howison getting plenty of the pill through the midfield. Both teams made the other look ordinary at times that day – and that’s what makes this contest so enticing. Langwarrin will look to make it a clean-sweep of its former Peninsula League comrades when the Kangaroos face a rebounding Karingal outfit in Sunday’s first semi-final at Rye. The Kangas began brilliantly against Chelsea last week but had to weather a strong finish from the Gulls to get across the line. Matt Naughton fed a very hungry midfield, with Zac Andrewartha kicking three and getting great support from the likes of Michael Parker, Blake Peach and Sean Herdman. Mitch Cuthbert and Haydn Golby – who fought hard against Curtis Bywater – held firm in defence, while Nick Tuddenham also played a key role in the victory. The Bulls were suffocated by Red Hill last week and will enjoy more opportunity against the Kangaroos. Todd Farrelly was impressive in his second game back from a spell, while Andy Mathers, Duncan Proud and Steve McInnes will take some strong form in against the Kangas. Netball Preview - Division 2 The Kangaroos need to bounce back By David Nagel There’s nothing quite like playing in a grand final and that’s the massive prize on offer for Langwarrin and Karingal when the two sides meet in today’s MPNFL Division Two Preliminary Final at Hastings. The winner will play two-time reigning champions Crib Point after the Magpies rode a fast start to a comfortable 40-31 victory over the Kangaroos in last week’s second semi-final at Somerville. The Magpies know how to produce at this time of year and pushed all the nervous tension to one side to steamroll the Kangaroos with a 13-5 opening onslaught. Ebony McDermott and Shaye Williams were brilliant with their conversion, while Dionne Douglas, Lily Cook and Kellie Davidson had complete control through the midcourt. And Tessa Moncrieff and Adrienne Harris gave nothing away in defence, braving freezing conditions, hail storms and a strong breeze to shut down the Kangas sharpshooters. It was impressive from the Magpies and they certainly take the front-running when it comes to favouritism for this year’s flag. So can Langwarrin bounce back, or will Karingal ride its luck and make its way through to a fourth-consecutive grand final? The Bullettes were on fire against Tyabb last week, leading 25-5 before play was abandoned just after half-time due a hail-storm. The Bullettes knocked the motivation out of the Yabbies’ cause by scoring 17 goals to two in the opening term. The Bullettes extended their lead before the game was called off with the winning team never seriously in doubt. The only positive for the Yabbies was that a couple of their players had fresh legs for the football semi-finals being played at Beaconsfield on Sunday. They won that game too, so well done Yabbies and good luck for today’s SEWF preliminary final on oval two at Hastings. Karingal had many winners in that first half performance, with Kate Kelly-Oman impressive through the midcourt while Claudia Whitfort, Madi Capsalis, Mardi Cunningham and Amelia Haugen combined beautifully around the court. Isabella Riddell and Abuk Kenyang were also in terrific form for the Bullettes, who will go in confident of getting the job done against the Kangaroos – who will be very keen to bounce back. Langwarrin will learn a lot from last week as they just weren’t prepared for the higher-level of intensity of finals netball. However there’s plenty of experience in the team and it showed after quarter time with the Kangas only losing the last three quarters by a goal. But the damage was done
46
in the opening term, trailing 13-5, and players like Sara Drain, Sarah Anderson, Jayde Travers and Emily Bennett will have the foot to the metal from the first whistle this afternoon. Emily Zeuschner, Jayde Aron and Zoe Zeuschner are others who will need to be switched on from the start. So will Langwarrin confirm its number-one ranking throughout the season, or will the Bullettes make it through to another grand final and get the chance to reverse the results of their last three visits to the big dance? This is going to be a cracking game of netball, played in much better conditions than last week, and we’ll go for Bullettes to progress to the grand final next week against the Magpies. It’s Karingal to win by two goals.
Netballers braved cold and windy conditions to provide some great action at Somerville last Saturday.
