AFL South East I know that this is a senior football record, however I wanted to share with you my increasing concern over the player, officials and spectator behaviour in junior football across the region. Within the AFL South Region there are two major junior leagues governed by AFL South East (FDJFL and SEJ), plus the MPJFL. In recent times all three have seen the need to instigate investigations concerning poor behaviour, both on and off the ground. Clubs will have seen recent media about the State Government’s release of a Fair Play Code – a code of conduct for sport and recreation in Victoria. At the heart of the code are five core values - integrity, respect, responsibility, fairness and safety. While governments, leagues and umpires all have a role in outlawing poor behaviour, for me the biggest influence is the culture of the club involved. I was horrified to read of a case at a recent U11’s game (yes U11’s!) that an umpire called a game off early, left the game in tears and said he would never umpire again, after the abuse he received. Shameful on the competing clubs that they would allow such a thing to happen to a 14-year-old!

We will fully support the Fair Play Code and I hope clubs do as well. Where senior clubs are aligned to junior clubs, I think it would be a fantastic step if you were to join together in stamping out poor behaviour. Nothing wrong with passion and vocal support, which is certainly the conduct in the majority. But judging by the number of incident reports coming into our office, the poor behaviour minority is increasing. I call on clubs to take an active role in changing the culture in this area. I know some clubs take a very strong stance on trying to eliminate inappropriate behaviour. The message is clear that clubs should not tolerate bad behaviour, abuse or violence and it should be written into their own code of conduct that people who display such traits are not wanted. On the field we are back to normal competition this week after the interleague break. At Preston City Oval last Saturday, we had two wins out of three against the Northern Football League. Congratulations to Josh Moore and his Under 19’s on a tough win against strong opposition. The attitude of the boys was excellent as they managed to win by a goal in a high standard game. Then in an exciting result, the women’s team won by a point in overtime after scores were tied at the end of normal time. It was fantastic to see the way the girls competed given it was their first opportunity to play representative football. Well done to coach Megan Snart on her coaching efforts and to all the girls representing the South East region. It was a passionate rendition of It’s a Grand Old Flag post game, with a slight change of chorus to “keep your eye on the yellow and blue”! Unfortunately, the seniors could not pull off a clean sweep, going down comfortably in the end after a promising start. The boys representing the MPNFL tried hard all game. Their effort could not be questioned, however after quarter time they were outclassed by quality opposition. A special thanks to Chis Holcombe and his team of assistants for the time and effort they put in to the program over a couple of months. Some quality games this week in Divisions 1 and 2. Former Nepean League heavyweights Bombers and Sorrento will go at it at Baxter Park as well as a top-ofthe-table clash between Edi Asp and Mt Eliza that will have an impact on finals positions. In Div 2 every game has relevance. Can Crib Point win their first game against Devon Meadows? Can Dromana stay undefeated in a danger game at Pearcedale, who are coming off a good win in round six? AFL Vic Country 2019 COMMUNITY CHAMPIONSHIPS RANKINGS RELEASED MPNFL ready for the long haul back The Mornington Peninsula Nepean Football League (MPNFL) has dropped to fifth on the official rankings for the 2019 WorkSafe AFL Victoria Community Championships following its 40-point loss to the Northern Football Netball League. The Sharks will now have to win their next two matches in 2019 and â&#x20AC;&#x2122;20 to get back to the number-one ranked game in the state. Thirty-two community football leagues have been assigned new nominal rankings following their participation in the 2018 Championships, which saw the best senior players from across Victoria go head-to-head in a one off interleague match. Eastern Football League has secured the number-one ranking after defeating former reigning premiers Geelong Football Netball League by 42-points at Etihad Stadium. For the first time, two metropolitan leagues will face off in the top-ranked match in 2019 after the Northern Football Netball League rose to second position following its win over the MPNFL. The loss sees Geelong FNL drop to third place, while a 76-point win over the Western Region Football League has seen Ovens and Murray Football League secure fourth place in season 2019. Rounding out the top ten ranking positions are Goulburn Valley (sixth), Western Region (seventh), Hampden (eighth), Ballarat (ninth) and South East FNL (tenth). SEFNL, also governed by AFL South East, rose to the upper echelon with a comprehensive 36-point victory over AFL Yarra Ranges. The 2019 Rankings list does not provide a likely schedule of matches for 2019, with leagues given the opportunity to opt-in or withdraw from the competition each season. Final entries for participation in the 2019 season are not requested by AFL Victoria until the end of the year to allow leagues sufficient time to decide whether they wish to participate in the competition the following year. SEWF Interleague SEWF prevail in an extra-time thriller By David Nagel It took two heart-stopping periods of extra time for South Eastern Women’s Football (SEWF) to claim a history-making one-point victory over the Northern Football Netball League (NFNL) at Preston City Oval on Saturday. The only women’s game in the 2018 WorkSafe AFL Victoria Community Championships ended with scores tied at 4.6.30 apiece – with SEWF securing a thrilling victory with a Chloe Hunt point in the opening minute of a second extra time. It was a game that left players exhausted, with coaches and spectators gasping for air after a magnificent finish to a wonderful exhibition of football. “It was a heart stopper in every sense, I don’t think I can remember my heart beating for the last 10 minutes of the game,“ said winning SEWF coach Megan Snart. “I’m just so incredibly proud of the team for fighting so hard, it was a real wrestle of momentum for most of the game. One team would play good football, then the other, it was just a great game of football and a great contest all day.” Northern took the early lead through Ashleigh Bayes, before Hunt answered with the first of her three goals to see SEWF take a one-point lead at quarter time. A Hunt mark and goal early in the second quarter saw SEWF extend its lead to four points at the main break. Play opened up at the start of the third term, Sarah Astone kicking SEWF out to a 10-point lead before Northern kicked two in a minute, with goals to Tara Chetcuti and Cassie Hurst seeing the home side regain the lead. SEWF drew level at three-quarter time, setting up a thrilling final quarter. Hunt, who proved the difference between the two teams in the end, ran into an open goal at the start of the last term, before Hurst responded with an inspirational piece of play at the 12-minute mark. A strong tackle, which saw Jess Adams leave the field, was duly converted by Hurst to see scores locked away once again. Northern pushed, with a crucial marking contest between SEWF’s Riley Cridland and Northern’s Linda Thorp going Cridland’s way – with SEWF holding on desperately to force extra time. The teams couldn’t be split in the first five minutes of extra time before Hunt’s point saw the visitors celebrate in style. Snart said her girls thoroughly deserved their final siren celebration. “I just think they were really proud of what they had achieved, coming together just four weeks out from the game and gelling the way they did was just an incredible effort from everyone involved,” she said. “For some of these girls who have an eye on the future, this was the next level, the highest level they had played at and it was a real credit to them the way they withstood the challenge.

“We knew we had a good mix and a good bond, but how that translated into game day was a bit of an unknown, and so was the calibre of the opposition.” Snart said there was nothing between the two teams all day. “The teams were very well matched for pace and skill but I was most pleased with our endeavour to tackle and our all-round pressure,” she said. “We had our structures, but the effort the team produced made that small amount of difference in the end.” Olivia Aing, an Eastern Devils premiership player last year, was named SEWF’s best player after a gutsy display that saw her on numerous occasions put her body on the line. “Olivia has always had that relentless attack on the ball, she doesn’t know any other way, but there were so many other good players as well,” Snart said. “Chloe (Hunt) kicked three goals so was super important and I thought Jess Johnston played a terrific game through the midfield. Westy (Michelle West) did well on a wing and Lauren Law played a huge role late in the game, playing a tagging role to perfection. “And I thought Chelsea (Wilkinson), Tayla (Tatterson) and Belinda Ousley were also really good players throughout the course of the day.” Snart said she was fully spent by the final siren, with two key emotions pumping through her veins. “Pride and relief, they’re the two things I felt most after the game,” she said. “I put a lot of pressure on myself, coming up against such an experienced coach in Chyloe Kurdas, and it was just that feeling of pure relief that got me in the end.” Ellie Koiker, Sarah Wright, Catherine O’Bryan and ruckman Sabrin Nyawela were named Northern’s best players. Footy Preview - Division 1 Shannon heads home for a visit By David Nagel

Mt Eliza coach Troy Shannon will return to very familiar territory when his Redlegs begin their biggest challenge of the season against Edithvale-Aspendale at Regents Park today. Shannon was a born and bred Edi-Asp youngster, who kicked on to play in four senior premierships with the club in 1989, ’99, 2000 and 2002 before coaching the club to a premiership in 2013. He is one of the most decorated players in Eagles’ history, making the wing at Regents Park his own for more than a decade. But today - well his former club becomes the mortal enemy. In his third year with the Redlegs, Shannon has moulded a smorgasbord of recruits into a tasty dish. They sit third on the ladder with a 5-2 record, with a six-point loss to Sorrento and a 23-point loss to Pines the only blips on the radar. But the Redlegs are about to face their moment of truth, with games against Frankston YCW, Frankston and Sorrento to follow this clash against the Eagles. Shannon knows what’s at stake. “Every game is huge in this competition, every game is tight and most games are coming down to the wire, but obviously these upcoming games will give us a true indication of where we sit right now,” Shannon said. “We’ve played three bad quarters of footy, one against Sorrento and two against Pines, and they’ve cost us games. That shows where the competition is right now - you have to play four quarters or you get found out.” The departures from Emil Madsen Reserve in the offseason have been well documented, but Shannon and his recruiting staff have done a fine job of reinvigorating the list. Blaine Coates, Ryan McGannon and Callan Park have been terrific inclusions from Fish Creek, while former junior Jordan Moncrieff has a had a tremendous impact, kicking 25 goals in seven matches. But Shannon says the impact of that quartet is being felt well beyond the confines of the scoreboard. “We probably knew what we were getting in a football sense, but what has surprised me is the outstanding quality of people they are,” Shannon said. “And that’s really important with a young group, we’re feeling good and really enjoying our football and I think that happens when you find a nice balance.” The Redlegs haven’t been afraid to give their youngsters some added responsibility. Ruckman Luke Webster is only 17, while Braden Nelmes, Ed Cahill and Luca Goonan are still in the prime-time development stage of their careers.

The Eagles have been going about their business nicely, recovering from a unique and horrible start that saw them begin their season on the back foot. They haven’t had anyone impact the scoreboard on a consistently heavy basis, with Brent Bowden, Michael Bussey, Lachie Batten, Brad Tagg and Nick Carlon all popping up at important times. This one could decide who claims a double-chance at the end of the season, and the Eagles – who probably should have a stranglehold on that position already – will stake their claim with a 22-point victory. Hands up who thought Sorrento would be sitting on top of the ladder after its 63-point belting at the hands of Frankston YCW in round one? Anyone…no…we thought so! The Sharks have shown remarkable fortitude to bounce back from their horror-start to the season to win six on the trot to sit in top spot after seven rounds. And this week they face a tricky trip to Greg Beck Oval to take on a desperate Frankston Bombers. Sorrento was all class against Seaford in round seven, kicking six goals to two in the second quarter to put the four points to bed in the early stages. Leigh Poholke, Jayden Tomkins and Nick Corp were all dangerous in front of goals, while Mitch Hallahan and Shannon Gladman did as they pleased around the ground. Bombers’ coach Beau Muston will have plenty to think about today. How does he stop that plethora of goal-scoring options and turn around recent defeats at the hands of Bonbeach and Edi-Asp. The Bombers are still right in the thick of the action – but can’t afford to fall too far behind the eight ball. Jarrad Grant and Zac Longham will need to fire for the Bombers to get the points. They’ll get close, but Sharks will continue their surge with an 11-point victory. Great mates Paddy Swayn and Simon Goosey will put their long-time friendship on hold for a few hours when Swayn’s Pines host Goosey’s Mornington at Eric Bell Reserve. Make no mistake…this a budding romance that could rival Prince Harry and Meghan Markle, with loving stares being shared across many coffees over the years. Seriously - both their wives are little bit concerned! But the biggest concern for both coaches is how to build on stunning wins leading into the interleague bye, with the Pythons claiming the massive scalp of YCW and the Bulldogs opening their season account against Bonbeach. Paul ‘Chewy’ Scanlon was outstanding for the Pythons, while Jackson Calder and interleague skipper Warwick Miller were stunning contributors for the Bulldogs. The Pythons’ form stacks up better – Goosey will buy the coffees this week after a 22-point defeat.

Footy Preview - Division 1 In another tight contest, Bonbeach should be slightly too strong for Seaford at Cannes Avenue. The Sharks will be kicking themselves after losing to Mornington last start, basically throwing away any advantage gained from the previous week’s victory over Frankston. Gav Vassallo, Jackson Casey and Gary Carpenter have been in fine form for the Sharks, and should get their team across the line. Matt Terech, Ishak Bashir and Tom Shaw will hoping to upset the applecart for the Tigers. And Rosebud faces the rare and difficult task of taking on Frankston YCW on the rebound when the Buds and Stonecats collide at Olympic Oval. The Buds were solid against Mt Eliza until half time inaccurate kicking at goal costing them a healthy lead – before the white flag went up in an 8.5 to 1.2 third quarter. It was Rosebud’s worst quarter of football for the season, they’ve had two weeks to stew on it, so expect a solid response. Greg Bentley, Rhys Pierce and Sean Downie will be keen to test themselves against the best and make sure a repeat of the third-quarter fadeout doesn’t happen. The Stonecats need a solid hit out here, with games against Mt Eliza and Sorrento on the horizon, and won’t waste the chance to hit a bit of form. A brilliant defence, led by Christian Ongarello and Lachie Street, will see the Stonecats home by 27-points.

Congrats to the 3 Redleg players who were part of the successful MPNFL U/19 Interleague team last week - Tom Small, Luke Webster & Aiden Smith. To the results a fortnight ago and wins in all 3 games against Rosebud was outstanding. The U/19’s started the day off with a huge win, extending the margin at each change to win by 138, keeping their undermanned opposition scoreless after 1/2 time. Sixteen players kicked goals in an even team performance. Best were Turner, Simmo, Doyley, Welshy up from the U/16’s, Coley & Kurt. The Reserves hit back well from their first loss and led by 28 at 1/4 time, extending the margin to 37 at the main break. The 2nd half was fairly even & we recorded a solid 7 goal win. Oscar & Buzz kicked 3 apiece and best players were Cuz, Risty, Westy in his Senior debut, McKinnon & Curtis. The Seniors jumped out of the blocks well with 5 goals to 2 but only held a 6 point 1/2 time lead. A fantastic 8 goals to 1 third term set up a comfortably 10 goal win. Cappy was great with 5 & Jordy with 4. Best players also included Tenno, Smally, Gorms, Lambie & Cal Park. Sorrento I hope we all enjoyed the week off, a chance to recharge the batteries, assess where we are at and look forward to launching forward. At the break the seniors sit 6 wins and 1 loss and on top of the ladder. The Reserves have 4 wins and 3 losses and right in amongst it as we approach the halfway mark of the season. Last time out the Scoobs were over run by a very good Seaford side. While beaten by a better team on the day, you feel that players returning from injury etc will give us a good chance of competing with any team in the competition. Let’s be sure to stick fat and give ourselves every chance to see how far we can go. The seniors made it 6 in a row after the rude wakeup call in round 1. The response to that round 1 belting has been impressive and with some big names returning over the next week or two, pressure is on for spots which is a great sign. On top of the ladder after 7 rounds is a reward for

effort, now with all that hard work done it’s time to take it up a level. What better scene than the replay of last year’s Grand Final. They’ll come up snarling so be ready for another epic battle in both grades. Thought of the week: What letter is silent in the word Scent, the S or the C!

It was great have the week off for our lads but as well a chance to mix up training a bit. Tuesday night the boys headed down to Strike Bowling for a bit of hit & giggles. Rumour has it that Slinger spends most of his social time at the centre and took the top score (150) for the night. Thursday night we had the pleasure of AFL legend, Rob Harvey come down and take our training session. Feedback from the session was everything you hope it would be and some. Hopefully some of that momentum will help break the shackles today and we return to some winning form in the Seniors & U19s. Footy Notes Rosebud Today we play host to Frankston YCW for the first time since 2004 when both teams were competing in Premier Division. Players, coaches & supporters alike have been looking forward to the challenge of today’s game. We also extend a warm welcome to our past players & officials for their annual gathering & particularly those marking the 30th anniversary of the 1988 Senior Premiership. The Club wears black armbands today for past player Don Jordan who passed away on 11 May and we extend our deepest sympathies to his family & friends. Don played 37 senior games for the Club in ‘59-62 and won the ‘62 Nepean League goal kicking award. Last week we had the week off for Interleague with the Club represented by Josh Harris (Under 19 team) and Keegan Downie (Senior team). In our previous outing at Mt Eliza it was a tale of 2 halves in the senior game. Poor kicking & decision making letting us down in the 1st half and we fell away in the 2nd half to a side that worked harder than we did. Despite a continued run of injuries we will be looking to give a far better account of ourselves today. The Development Team & Unders undermanned and lost their games.

In the 2nd quarter we played some of the best footy for the year and we took a good lead into halftime. A frustrating second half we lost our way, got sucked in, allowed the umpires to get involved & just fell over the line. On a positive note Mike Williams returned and showed us his class at both ends of the ground, other good players were Robinson, Mara and Schuller. In the Seniors our hard work got us our first win for the season. When we look at the games apart from 2 quarters of football, Sorrento 1st Q & Mt Eliza 3rd Q we have played some reasonable football without get the reward. A very even game all day & to have Bonbeach hit the front with 7 mins to go and for us to have the composure against the wind to come back was very pleasing and should do a lot to the confidence against a Pines who are coming off a great win against YCW. Bonbeach Mornington What seams like a lifetime, 2 weeks ago we had a great club day with all 9 teams winning. Against Bonbeach the 19’s start the day. Bonbeach got the better of us kicking 5 goals straight with the wind. Our boys fought hard for the rest of the game and eventually got the win in the end. Our third quarter was our best defensive effort for the year. The whole team worked so well together only allowing Bonbeach to kick the one goal. We celebrate another milestone this week. Ryley ‘Riz’ Hodson plays his 100th 1st XVIII game. We love watching you go about your business and look forward to watching many more of your games in the Stonecats colours. Congratulations from everyone at the Stonecats. After squandering many scoring opportunities early, the Unders eventually put some scoreboard pressure on to record a convincing victory. Henry, Tom & Cal were best, while Josh slotted 4. Another controlled display by the Two’s, getting the job done with a minimum of fanfare each week. Blackie was dominant, Chunk is stripping fitter each week and Beatles Davenport was on song. In the Ones, we lost another soldier late, an unfortunate injury to Angus, mate we are all thinking of you. Our first defeat in season 2018 came after we didn’t make the most of our opportunities to post a winning score. Kyle shouldered the load, Macklin and Cody battled hard. Round 7 seems a long time ago. Congratulations to the under 19s on the great win. Well done all the reps and Paul Scanlon, who backed up in the senior game, as an on-baller. Bad luck to the seniors. This week we take on Mornington at home. Such an even competition at present, so all of our teams will have to be switched on to have a chance as we expect this to be another ripper. Under 19s and reserves showing promise but the mid-season blues have come a bit early. Need to get back in the winning circle and with it bring the numbers back up at preparation (numbers at training are a key indicator of results). Behind the scenes, lot’s of good things happening. The mid year Ball is fast approaching with around 70 tickets already spoken for, players will be provided these this week. We are aiming for 150 but can cater for up to 300. As a pinnacle black tie event all committee, members, sponsors and players are invited, welcome and expected. But on to today. Milestones Three players that have all tasted senior premiership success – one on multiple occasions – will run out for their 100th games of senior football today. Edithvale-Aspendale pair Tom Turner and Mark Mullins basically grew up in each other’s pockets, playing in multiple junior premierships together before enjoying the ultimate football experience – sharing the Eagles 2013 come-from-behind flag-winning victory over Bonbeach. And Ryley Hodson is no stranger to the premiership dais, playing in three senior premierships for Frankston YCW. Hodson tasted the best feeling in football in 2014, before backing that up with victories in 2016 and ’17. Well done to all three players for their long-term commitment to their clubs.

Netball Preview - Division 1 A huge clash at Olympic Oval By David Nagel The opportunity to play finals will still be alive for either Rosebud and Frankston YCW after the two teams collide in a crunch A Grade clash at Olympic Oval today. The Buds and Stonekittens sit two games behind fourthplaced Mornington, who should win against Pines to open up a three-game gap on the loser of this contest. Three games – that would appear to be too big a margin to make up. Rosebud, who were super impressive in a 65-32 win against Mt Eliza last start, always knew this patch of the season was going to be important. Games against the Redlegs, Stonekittens and Frankston - in quick succession – will dictate their whereabouts on the ladder come seasons end. Win the next two and the Buds set up an intriguing contest against Mornington in round 10. The Buds are finally heading back to full strength, with Millie McDermott and Lauren Robinson leading a dominant performance against the Redlegs, who have conceded the most goals in the competition this year. The Stonekittens are frugal in comparison, with Lyshae Barry and Stephanie Boulton leading a very dour defence. It sets up a fascinating contest – a contest the Stonekittens will win by two goals in a classic. Mornington has only lost to Edi-Asp and Sorrento this year and will look to keep that impressive record in tact when it travels to Pines to take on the Pythons. Mornington is an interesting team to observe, with terrific wins over YCW and Bonbeach following on from a great game against Sorrento, going down 38-42. Are they really that close to the mark? We’ll find out more next week against Seaford, but for now players like Candace Page, Katey Rudolph, Alex Newton and Sarah Nash will need to be focussed to bring the four points back to Mornington. Brierley Chase, Tia Weston and Ash Boyle will give their all for the home team, but Mornington will be too good. Sorrento will look to bounce back from its first loss of the season when it hits the road to take on Frankston. A first taste of defeat won’t hurt the Sorras, who still have a lot more credits in the bank than debits. If that last game showed anything it is that the Sharks are right in contention this year, pushing a very powerful Seaford team to the limit. Briana O’Hehir and Dominique Taylor provide some real power at either end of the court while Shelley O’Donnell, Hannah Mundy and Ashlea Gladman have been fantastic contributors through the midcourt. Frankston is coming off its best two weeks for the season, claiming its first victory against Bonbeach before going ok against Edi-Asp before the interleague break.

Players like Sarah Muston and Blair Anderson will be competitive, but the Sorras should have too many tricks up their sleeve. Edithvale-Aspendale will look to fine tune its game ahead of next week’s huge trip to Sorrento when it rolls out the red carpet for Mt Eliza. The Eagles aren’t as free scoring as Seaford or Sorrento, but have a miserly team defence that just refuses to buckle. They’ve conceded 25 goals less than the next best defensive unit in the competition – so if defence wins premierships look out for the Eagles later this year. Defenders like Anne Leeds and Nicole Taylor have really stood up at times, making full use of some great defensive pressure through the midcourt. Mt Eliza was disappointing against Rosebud in round seven and Carly and Ellie Russo, with the help of Pippa Hanson and co, will be keen to turn their fortunes around. But the Eagles will prevail and take a 7-1 record into next week’s game against Sorrento. And Seaford will continue its unbeaten start to the season when it travels to Cannes Avenue to take on Bonbeach. The Tigers are a free-flowing unit at the moment, scoring more goals than any other team in the competition. And that attacking flair is complemented by a very strong defence with Tracey Dell and Kara Hargrave having a massive influence since making the switch from SEFNL powerhouse Narre Warren. Bonbeach do defend ok, conceding less goals than any of the bottom-five teams in the competition. Theresa Blaauw and Stephanie Coy have been magnificent defenders all year – but this is their biggest challenge to date. Seaford will make it eight-from-eight with a substantialsized victory.

Netball Notes Division 1 Sorrento We started with a moment to reflect the loss of Andrew ‘Toe Punt” Kelly & to support “Pink” Round for Breast Cancer. Our early times slot due to Ladies Day lunch also meant we had a fantastic crowd to cheer. A Grade made a strong start before Seaford quickly matched their efforts. Their fast skilled attacking end was hard to beat but brought out a brilliant defensive effort from the Sharks. The intensity of the match was high & no doubt will make for thrilling match when we meet again. Conrats to Seaford. Best on Kate, Bree & Hannah. B Grade are thrilled to welcome Rachel permanently. Expecting a tough game the WIND adding some extra challenge. We played hard with Emma on a mission in WA & Sophie tough in defence. 3/4 was by far our strongest, followed by our defenders keeping them to 6 goals in the last, we were in the hunt just couldn’t quite get the win. Best on Sophie, Rachel & Emma. An amazing effort from the C Grade in challenging condition. After being behind all game the Shark were on, winning the last ¼ to walk out with a 5-goal win. The first of the season has made room for many more to come. Best on Ruby P, Olivia & Brooke. Coming off a loss last week D Grade were eager to get another win on the board. Holly starred in goals with Indi deserving an honorable mention for attacking the ball hard every chance she got. Well done on another win girls! Best on Ruby B, Indi & Holly. Frankston YCW The heavens opened up and the rain pelted down for the A grade game against Pines, contributing to a scrappy game with many turnovers up and down the court. We trialled some new combos which will give us some options with girls having holidays mid season. Best on goes to Ellie for her consistency within the mid court! B grade also had a sold win, however despite a strong start breaking the first centre and making the most of our turnovers we did not give 4 quarters of consistent netball and play out best. At time it was fantastic with lots of talk, defensive pressure and strong leads but there were also lots of scrappy passages of play and no hunger for ball. Best on goes to Kristy will 11 rebounds and lots of tips creating many turnovers. With Pines only sitting a couple of spots back on the ladder, C grade went into the game knowing we were going to be pushed and needing to be switched on to take control. It took us a little bit to settle into a few new

combinations and changes due to injury and illness and although we worked it out we’ve got to start switching on this a little quicker. Kasey takes out best on this week for her drives into space and constant reoffering. D grade also had a nice win, however we still weren’t creating many options, relying way too much on dropping back for passes instead of doing the extra leg work and cutting for a front drive. Congrats to Chelsea for a ripper first game! BOC goes to Nicky who played a stellar controlled game! 4/4 wins!

Edi-Asp Round 8 v Mt Eliza. The Triple Milestone Round. This week is a big week for players milestones at Regents Park! A grade co captain, Bri, plays her 150th game as an Eagle! An original, an interleague rep player, dual Premiership captain & six times Premiership player. Bri was a junior Eagle who came through the ranks & she will be looking to her team mates to help her celebrate today by bringing home a good win! Joining Bri in setting milestones, is her cousin, Tom, who plays his 100th game today. Tommy is no slouch in the Premiership arena either, from winning every flag, every year as a junior Eagle to playing in the greatest comeback Senior Premiership win ever in 2013! Finally, another local, Mullo, also plays his 100th game today. Mark played in the same junior teams as Tom, was part of our great 2013 Premiership win & showed his class by winning our senior best and fairest award last year. All local kids. All attended St Louis Primary. All still playing with their local sporting club! Congratulations & good luck today! Netball Notes Division 1 Mornington A week off and we are back to it against Pines today Two weeks ago Anytime Fitness A Grade had an easy day in horrible wet conditions winning comfortably 42-10. It was an all round team effort as usual. Congratulations to Tess Cooper playing her 100th game for the club & congratulations to B grade player Olivia Ballard on debuting with the A grade team, putting in a pretty solid quarter with the girls. My player of the match goes to Katy Rudolph who found the FUN in her game again and it showed out on court !! Mach 1 Panel & Paint B grade finally snagged a win. The team is starting to gel and that is evident on court. We won 34-32 in what was a tight game but we won all quarters bar the second. Again our defensive game was spot on, we just need to polish up the attacking game. Player of the match goes to, once again Sophie Baker. Sophie had her work cut out for her but kept her composure and started to shut down the opposition goalers. Mornington Tyrepower C Grade played a solid game to win & D grade started off slowly today due to a severely depleted team through injury. However once the girls adjusted to the fill ins & the reshuffling of the original players they hit their straps! Kayla played her first game in defence & proved yet again not only is she one of our most versatile players but our best on court for the day. The girls came away with a well deserved 8 goal win. Well done to to all the girls on some very solid wins. #godoggies

Pines Last round saw us take on YCW at their home courts. Our D Grade girls knew they would have a tough match however went in with the goal to stick together as a team. YCW had the jump on them in the first quarter however they stuck at it and kept up with the game until the end. Super effort by Phoebe who is improving every week in a new defensive role. C Grade started extremely strong and kept up with YCW for most of the game, however it was a tricky third quarter that saw YCW take the win. Best on to Captain Rach!

B Grade are consistently improving every week and causing havoc with the other teams in the competition. Although they didnâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;t come away with the win they will continue to be a contender in the coming weeks. BOC Naigre. A Grade had a tough match against a very strong YCW defense end. Although tough, they stuck to their goals for the game and acknowledged their achievements as well as looking at what they can work on in the coming weeks. In round 7 we played Rosebud for the first time in history, we welcomed them to Toorak College out of the rain and wind. D GRADE started the day in fine form as they have been over the past few weeks. Chloe played a ripper game in defence while Jordyn, Brianna and Carla all worked seamlessly in the goal ring. The girls walked away with a 62-17 goal win and secured 2nd spot on the ladder with 6 wins and just 1 loss. C GRADE had a rocky start and didnâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;t perform their best this week, however positive to see even on an off day they can walk away with a decent win (59-42). Rosebud were strong but could not score enough against Di, Mandy & Kelsey. Marcie shot well this week and continues to impress each week. B GRADE had a tough fight on their hands with a determined and strong Rosebud side. Pippa, Michelle & Shay were great in defence, supported well by Ebony playing her second game in B. Jo ran strong as always and was nice to welcome Charlie back both contributed well to the 48-42 goal win. A GRADE struggled to score this week and unfortunately only played a good 3rd quarter, they showed they could match it with Rosebud but not for the full match unfortunately. Maddie, Bayley & Kierra never gave up and Carly did some nice work on and off the circle in WA. Unfortunately we suffered a loss this week, bigger than we hoped (32-65). We look forward to the rest this week and finish round 7 with A grade 7th on the ladder and B,C,D all sitting 2nd.

Netball Notes Division 1 Frankston Bombers Goose: We trained all season for the game, but nothing could prepare our knees for the hard ground. The whistle blew and the rush began to find a horse or a jockey. The betrayal was brutal when your jockey chose another horse Chloe: wait I thought this was a netball report? G: you want to hear about the morning games not the afternoons? C: yes G: D grade played one of their best games as a team. Kiera didn’t stop and I was getting dizzy with her running. Kim was getting more taps then the stage at a tap dancing concert. Unfortunately their jazz hands stole the show C: Moving onto C grade then G: our defenders didn’t stop all day. Rhi fitted into the team superbly&Kels was shooting for a change. Unlucky for us we didn’t shoot enough hoops to take the win. You played great Chlo-I’ve never seen someone make a 3m platter in 20 mins C: LOL I think the real MVP was Tahls-the best game I’ve seen her play! Stubbsy was acting better on the court then off-don’t bring your mum if you can’t keep up with her G: must be a Chloe thing to be out shone by your mum C: ouch. G: I heard there was some commotion in A grade? C: well I’m not sure whether it was Jen’s glorious shooting skills or Musto’s hunger for the cheese platter, I mean ball. It was a great game. The scores were close for the last 3/4 sadly our 1st quarter lost us the game. G: oh bugger I reckon we took the eagles by surprise. Bonbeach We welcome a very strong Seaford outfit to our home court today knowing that our girls are going to give it everything against the best in the business in 2018. B Grade almost pulled off a great win against Mornington the last time we played, with all teams showing good signs against some strong opposition. We look forward to some very competitive games of netball today, with C and D Grade hoping to chalk up their third wins for the season. It won’t be easy girls, but let’s continue to give it our best shot and see where it takes us.

Seaford What an amazing day against Sorrento back in round seven with both A Grade teams playing an amazing standard of netball. We were very pleased to come away with the win and keep our undefeated record intact. It was a very competitive day for our clubs with both coming away with two wins apiece. Today we take on Bonbeach and expect more of the same, some great netball and plenty of good times along the way.

D Grade - First indoor game for the season. The girls all came out to play. First quarter we played with some good passing and feeding the ring. Defensively the girls played well. As Mt Eliza started to take control and our heads dropped a little but each week we are improving, which is great to see. Best on Chelsea Gibson and Alyssa C Grade - Playing the top team and indoors we knew it was going to be a tough game. But to the girls credit they kept strong and played a consistent 4 quarters, with a little more training we can be as good as these top teams. Best on Lauren Harvey and Ellie Davis B Grade - Today we played one of the harder teams and did an amazing job. We were determined from the start of our warm up to play our best game, which we did. We backed each other up, cheered for one another, played as a team and most importantly we all played really well. The last quarter we pulled it together and we were

A Slice of MPNFL History Blackford up there with the best by Doug Dyall When discussions come around to local legends of our game here on the Mornington Peninsula it does not take long before the name Tony Blackford enters the conversation - and almost always with admiration. Today the two sides that Tony had great success with, Frankston Bombers and Sorrento, do battle at Greg Beck Oval. It provides us with a chance to reflect on a career that is a remarkable one and deserves the highest praise. Starting with the Frankston Bombers under 18’s in 1985, it was clear Tony had talent and in 1986 he took out the Ken Lyons Medal as the winner of the MPFL Best and Fairest. He made his senior debut the same year at Frankston, a club that he would go on to play 139 senior games with between 1986 and 1997. A career highlight came in 1991 with the MPNFL Division Two best and fairest medal complementing a premiership flag for his beloved Frankston Bombers in the same season. Getting the coaching bug in 1998, Tony left Frankston Bombers for Berwick where he amassed another 42 senior games and in his three-year tenure picked up his second premiership medal, this time as player and coach in 1999. Tony went back to Frankston as coach in 2001 before moving south in 2002 to take up the role with Sorrento. He played another 66 senior games culminating in another premiership in 2004 where many believe the club’s great run of success began.

Returning in 2009 to Frankston Bombers, Tony had immediate success with his third premiership as a senior coach. He stayed at Frankston Bombers till the end of 2012 before spending some time fishing, and in the media promoting football. Then in 2014 he was lured back to the coaching ranks with Red Hill, where he stayed four seasons and got the club into finals twice. Lured back to Sorrento for 2018 as coach, Tony parted company with the club before the season began. Now able to spend more time enjoying his other love fishing, Tony still has some involvement in the media and is always promoting football and fully supportive of all clubs and players. We all should admire Tony’s dedication to local football and take note of his great contribution to our game. A magical milestone for mighty McVeigh By David Nagel Colin McVeigh will be remembered for a lot more than he wants to be when he one day hangs up the boots on a career that reaches the magical figure of 200 games against Rye at Thomas Barclay Oval this afternoon. “Just a consistent player who wore the Hastings jumper with pride and gave everything he had for the football club… that’ll do me,” said McVeigh, who has given so much more to the Hastings Football Netball Club and the local game in general. Starting as a junior at Hastings in 2002, the now 30-yearold debuted in the seniors in 2005 and has not looked back ever since. A club best and fairest winner and twice runner up in the league award, and a premiership player in 2016 - McVeigh was also the face of Hastings as he represented the club with distinction during five interleague campaigns. He has been a star of the game since he burst onto the scene in early 2006. “In one of my first games I kicked eight goals against EdiAsp, who were pretty strong at the time, but I hit the post with a kick after the siren when a goal would have won us the game,” McVeigh said. “That game, and two others, really stand out.” In the premiership year of 2016, McVeigh was reported for striking in the elimination final against Red Hill. The club fought the charge and he was free to play against Somerville in the first semi-final a week later. Although not suspended, the Blues’ stalwart felt that he had let his team down and went about rectifying the situation as he only he knew how. He kicked five goals in a stunning performance, Hastings kicking 6.2 to 0.1 in the final term to keep their dream alive with a 34-point victory. “I had never been reported in my life and that was a tough week,” McVeigh said. “I just wanted to prove to the boys that I wouldn’t let them down so to come out and kick five, and play really well, that was a game that really does stand out above the others.” And then there was the 2016 grand final and the chance to break a 21-year club drought under coach Brendan Dunne. “We got pumped every week for years, then Glenn Michie came in and really turned the culture around and we reaped the rewards that year,” McVeigh said. “We lost the 2011 grand final to Sorrento by a point, that was devastating, and you start to wonder whether you’ll ever get the chance to play in one again. When you’re younger you take everything for granted but we took nothing for granted that year.” The Blues won by 27 points, McVeigh kicking three goals and Paul Rogasch earning best afield honours in a hardearned victory from fourth place on the ladder. “The whole season was unreal, we started really well but were riddled with injuries and only got healthy just before finals rolled around,” he said.

“The old saying goes that you need to be playing your best footy at the right time of year and we just all clicked at the same time.” McVeigh said the club had played an integral part of his life, meeting some life-long friends along the way. He even met his wife Emma at the club, and they now have two children with Willow, 2, and Billy, three weeks old, sure to keep them on their toes. “It really has been like a second home for me, I’ve made some close mates out of it and enjoyed every single step along the way,” he said. “Sometimes it’s tough when your losing and can’t see any light at the end of the tunnel, but stick fat and you get rewarded in the end.” McVeigh wanted to thank his wife Emma and two other Hastings stalwarts in particular for a having a massive influence on his career. “Gerry Morsman has been on this journey right from the start,” McVeigh said. “He was my junior coach and came across as team manager when I started playing seniors and has been here ever since. He’s been a father-figure to me around the club and I can speak to him about anything. “And ‘Aggers’ (Michael Agnello) played a huge part in my senior career as well. I played with him for 10 years before he retired in 2015. He was a hard-working player and a great captain who led from the front each week.” Well done Colin McVeigh – a wonderful ambassador for the Hastings Football Netball Club.

Umpires Training takes all types They Train? Who Knew… Did you know that umpires train? No, I don’t mean they catch trains everywhere because they’re incapable of driving. But then again if their driving ability is anything like their umpiring competency, well…you fill in the rest. Train (verb) 1. the act of preparation by exercise and diet in an attempt to reach or maintain peak physical fitness in preparation for a specific sport or event (Oxford Dictionaries) 2. To prepare by exercise, diet, instruction, etc., for any physical contest (Webster’s 1913 Dictionary pg2043 or somewhere near) So you’re intrigued now I guess? The whole of idea of an umpire actually training. Bet you always thought they just rocked up to a game each week with some different spud that wouldn’t know what a football was even if it him in the schnoz. Hold on…pause that thought process. Umpires actually chuck on some sporting attire (got to at least look the part), dawdle out onto an oval and get their boogie on. That’s all training is isn’t it? Just a little boogie? But that’s not the end of it. We actually do it twice. No…not just twice through the year, but TWO dedicated nights every week. Yeah shock, horror. Goalies meander around like lost sheep; Boundaries chase the rabbit around the track like a donkey follows a carrot, and fieldies, well they just prance around like world leaders…big in voice but small in substance. In all seriousness, surely, you’d like to generally hear about the training regimes of the various umpiring disciplines that have stricter fitness requirements than players if they want to have any possible crack at making it up town. What really happens on those cold dark nights on a rundown oval that no one actually knows exist? So here it is…the typical training night… Those little whippet boundaries: Well…this may be the one thing that doesn’t come as a surprise…they run. And they run, and they continue to run. Just like match day, all they actually do is stand one behind the other and trail the fat white line around the ground. That’s all there really is to

it. Whoops...forgot something…every so often they stop, take 15 minutes and throw the ball somewhere 55 metres from where the ruck contest would actually be. The goalies: Ever seen one run? No…? Neither have I. Carrying their white flags through the gate onto the less than pristine grass the goalies stop a couple of metres in, line up along the boundary line, wave their white flags towards the club rooms, and head straight for the bar for a hotdog. Why they even bother putting a tracksuit on is a mystery to all. Oh…sorry…this writer has just been tapped on the shoulder by a disgruntled goal umpire unimpressed by those comments. If, time permitted and a rewrite was possible the above should read “...and head straight to the bar for a minimum of three hotdogs.” Sincerest of apologies to all insulted goal umpires for this error. Then lastly, the big-headed fieldies; Wrapped in bubble wrap and wearing noise-cancelling headphones the fieldies prance around perfecting their delicate “holding the ball” action and ball ups. Pity they still can’t get either right. Bet you always wondered why they were so precious? Well, plain and simple…they’re trained that way. So there you have it. Umpires do actually train. But in saying that it’s nothing this writer would ever write home about… Get Involved SUA are always on the lookout for those crazy individuals who want to become umpires. It takes a certain type of person to want to umpire, but those people who take the brave step, often benefit greatly from all umpiring offers. Footy Preview - Division 2 Dangerous Demons confronting the Blues By David Nagel Hastings premiership player Colin McVeigh will run out for his 200th senior game when the Blues host Rye in a crunch game for both clubs at Thomas Barclay Oval. McVeigh joins 12 other players on one of the most exclusive lists at the club after beginning his career as a 17-year-old in 2005. A senior best and fairest winner with several interleague campaigns under his belt, McVeigh is one of the most respected figures in local football. But if he and this crop of Blues want to add to that remarkable drought-breaking success-story of 2016 – they need to make a statement…and need to make it now against the Demons. The Blues deserve their middle-of-the-table ranking right now with wins against Crib Point, Tyabb and Somerville balanced out by losses to the top three – Chelsea (25 points), Karingal (33) and Dromana (38). And it was that last loss to the Tigers that would suggest they’re a little off the pace at the minute. The Blues were brave in the first half, with Tom Redmond, Paul Rogasch and Terry Green holding the Tigers dangerous forwards at bay before a seven-goal-to-three third term put the contest to bed. The Blues had no answer to the Tigers’ fleet-footed midfield and forwards, conceding far too easily in that third term. And Rye will be no pushover.

Footy Preview - Division 2 The Demons have also gone along quietly this year, sitting in fourth place after wins against Tyabb, Crib Point, Langwarrin and Red Hill. The first two wins were largely unimpressive, but the victories against the Kangaroos and Hillmen would suggest the Demons have a bit to offer this year. The Demons handled tough conditions and a dogged opponent with a touch of quality against the Hillmen last start, leading by five goals at the final change before holding off the fast-finishing and wind-assisted home side. Red Hill never really looked likely, but late goals to Jono Ross and Zac Vines closed the margin to a nail-biting two points at the final siren. Recruits Tom Baker and Tyrren Head once again led from the front for the Demons, while Adam Kirkwood and Harry Whitty also played key roles in the victory. This one will be tight, but McVeigh’s milestone will inspire the Blues to a hard-fought eight-point victory. Karingal welcome Red Hill to Ballam Park for a game that will give us a really good indication of where both teams sit right now. The Bulls, in second-place, would appear to be a genuine top-three contender, while Red Hill has the secondhighest percentage in the competition and has been in every contest it has played in this year. The Hillmen have won three and lost two, both by singlefigure margins, with a draw against Langwarrrin rounding out a very competitive start to the season. Jono Ross brings a touch of quality to the midfield and forward line,

while Dylan Hoare, Sean Marchetti and Jake and Josh Mold have been significant when the Hillmen play their best brand of footy. The Bulls are going along nicely with veteran Michael Burke having a terrific season to date, with Andy McInnes, Aaron Paxton and Callan Dixon all taking some fine form into last week’s interleague break. The Bulls will need to be wary here – the Hillmen are tough to score against – but we’ll go for the home side to win by 21 points. Navigation won’t be a problem for Chelsea this week when the Seagulls make the familiar trip to Lloyd Park to take on Langwarrin. The Gulls have been one of the early-season trendsetters this year, with a loss to Dromana the only blotch on their copybook. Curtis Bywater has given the Gulls a focal-point up forward – booting 23 goals for the season – while coach James Brain and ruckman Ben Holman have been serviceable contributors throughout. The Kangaroos also have a dangerman up forward, with Jesse Murphy booting 19 goals from his last four games, while Sean Herdman, Blake Harkness, Nick Tuddenham and Dan Wehner really lifted when the Kangas needed a boost against Crib Point last start. Langwarrin fired-up for its first game of the season against Karingal, and we can expect to see a similar effort against a former foe from last year once again.

But the Gulls will just have the edge – running out 13-point winners. Devon Meadows will be very keen to bounce back to the winners list when the Panthers hit the road to take on a winless Crib Point. The Panthers look set for a big year after rolling Somerville in round three, but have failed to trouble the scorers since. Losses to Langwarrin and Red Hill, and then a poor display against Karingal would have coach Glenn Michie scratching his head. The Panthers have plenty of talent with the former Cranbourne-connection of Mat Fletcher, Gav Kerr and Michael Theodoridis all capable of big things, while Pat Harmes and Pat Boland have been terrific players for the Panthers over the years. The Magpies are clearly struggling, but this could be the opportunity to start well and apply some serious scoreboard pressure for the first time this year. Mykelti Lefau was sensational with five goals against Langwarrin, and if the Maggies can find one or two more avenues to goal we could be in for an upset. But we’ll go for the Panthers by 32 points. Somerville will need to have its wits about it when it welcomes local-rivals Tyabb to Jones Road. Poor kicking cost the Eagles of any hope of victory against Chelsea last time out and a repeat of that performance will leave the door open for the Yabbies once again. Adrian Speedy, Nathan Gillis, Ben Sedgwick and Jake Haskett will all bring good form into this encounter. Tyabb was disappointing against Pearcedale in round six, failing to fire on a day where back-to-back victories were a possibility. The Yabbies are definitely an improved unit this year with Brendan Doyle bringing a rock-solid feel to the midfield, while Jake Anderson has been a consistent performer in front of goal. But the Eagles can’t afford to stuff this one up – and they’ll get home by 25 points. And Dromana will continue its winning run against Pearcedale at Tractor Park. The Tigers look so sharp at the moment and have a real commitment to the cause – just ask Ben Holmes and Beau Cosson who almost knocked each other out when going for the same footy against Hastings last start. The Tigers are very fleet-footed, with Sam Geurts, Ethan Johnstone, Jack Gipp, Josh Bateman and Sam Fowler moving the ball brilliantly against the Blues, while Rikki Johnston and co still have gears to go to in defence. Pearcedale can be dangerous on the its home deck and will be full of confidence after a comprehensive victory over Tyabb. But Luke Jennings, Aidan Simmons, Travis Bravo and Zach Campbell won’t get the same opportunities this week – it’s the Tigers by 34 points.

Footy Notes Langwarrin Welcome back to all our supporters and sponsors after the bye, to Lloyd Park as we play host to Chelsea. Recently these clashes have been close contests and we are expecting the same again today. Round 6 saw us have 3 good wins up against Crib Point. For most of our playing group it was our first game at Crib Point and in front of a good crowd our 19’s and two’s both had convincing wins. Good players for the 19’s included W. Davis, J. Allan, J. Mack, J. Dormer and A. Boag. In the 2’s Corey Moore kicked 4 and was amongst the best; along with M. Peynenborg, M. Windsor, J. Longley, S Schaede and A. O ‘Rourke-Ryan. In the seniors, star recruit Jesse Murphy continued to be a strong prescene and kicked 6. Big Red playing his 150th was another highlight. A big man on the ground and a great club man off it - well done Red ! With plenty of room to improve, and going into the bye round, it was good to have a win. Congratulations to Zac Davies on his first seniors game. Good players included Tuddy, who showed the way with plenty of courage, Pipes, Sean and Siz. As the weather gets colder now would be a great time to grab yourself a Langy beanie and hoodie. Lets get a sea of blue happening as we cheer on the boys. Go Langy !!!

Pearcedale We hope everyone is well rested coming off the weekend off as we welcome Dromana to Pearcedale today. Let’s put our hearts and bodies into it and be competitive today. Tyabb Our U/19’s boys went down in another nail biter, this time by 4 points. If the game had gone another minute we may well have recorded our first victory which must surely be just around the corner. The Reserves were greeted with very blustery conditions that was going to make skilful play and straight goal kicking a rarity. A good start was needed into the breeze but we lacked urgency in the first quarter. Luckily we were able to turn it around and as the game went on we really worked hard, which was led by our backline and eventually won by over eleven goals. Yab fans everywhere were left scratching their heads Saturday evening. How can the Seniors be so good 1 week and so poor the next? Chocolates to boiled lollies I believe the elders describe it. The Dales meant business and should have been further ahead at half time(24points), and if it wasn’t for HARBO, SILK & the SKIP they would have been. 3rd qtr was our worst (0.36.3) and the door was shut. Most disappointing part was that when we decided to fight back, kicking 6.3 in the last qtr, it was too late. MITTA had his best game for the year, KOSSA had a dip in his 100th and GEORDIE was good in his second game of the year. Bit of work to do over the break as we look to bounce back at Somerville.

Footy Notes Hastings

It seems like an eternity since our last game against Dromana in Round 6. Thank you to Graeme and his team at Dromana for their hospitality it was greatly appreciated. They say a week is a long time in Football, it seems that 2 weeks is an eternity with no football. We would like to wish Ken Stratton our best wishes in getting his health back in order. Ken has had to stand down from his Presidency role and we thank him for everything he has done. We would like to welcome Karen Gay as our first ever female President of the HFNC also Graeme Cole and John Coventry for stepping up into the Vice Presidents roles. Round 7 today V Rye at home and I am sure the boys will all be ready and firing to go after having a very well earnt break for the Interleague carnival. We would like to welcome Mick and the Rye contingent to Thomas Barclay Oval in what promises to be some quality games of Football & Netball. We would like to congratulate Luke Hewitt for being selected to represent the MPNFL Seniors V Northern Football League last Saturday. Whilst many players were having a weekend off Luke was in Preston working hard as usual and performing well kicking a couple of goals for the Sharks. This is an amazing effort and credit to Luke after breaking his leg last July. Luke has worked unbelievably hard on and off the field to not only get back playing - but has come back bigger and stronger than ever. We are all so proud of your efforts Luke – congratulations. To this week’s game and we have an absolute amazing milestone for the Club. Today Colin McVeigh will run out for his 200TH HFNC Senior game becoming only the 13th player in HFNC history to achieve this amazing milestone. Colin started his junior career at Hastings JFC playing U14s in 2002 after moving to the area from Chirnside Park where he had already won a League B&F and Premiership in the same year. It was evident even in his early days that Colin had that something special about him. He has won junior B&Fs and played in 4 junior grand finals – predominantly as a Ruck or Midfielder. Colin made the transition from Junior to Senior Football with absolute ease. In 2006 Colin earnt a nomination and was the eventual winner of the first ever Future Wizard Award for Peninsula League. Colin debuted in 2005 for the HFNC Seniors as a 17yo and has never looked back. He really put his mark on the competition in 2006 where he booted 8 goals against Edi-Asp in June 2006 from Full Forward. Colin has proven to be one of the most versatile players ever at the HFNC, Colin’s athletic ability to be able to run, jump and kick the ball long and direct has enabled Colin to play in any position on the ground and not only play there he could absolutely own it. Colin truly typifies the modern-day Aussie Rules footballer and it is with this versatility he has been a thorn in the side for every opposition team that he has played.

Colin has had quite a few Senior personal accolades come his way - League B&F R/Up on 2 occasions, 2 x R/ Up HFNC Senior B&F, 5 x Interleague Rep and 1 x Senior B&F - but the pinnacle of his career to date without a doubt was being an integral member of the Hastings 2016 Senior Premiership side. Chelsea Hope everyone enjoyed the week off as I think it came at the appropriate time for us. The trip down to Sommerville was a tuff day for the Under’s and Stevie G’s boy’s. Hopefully we can get some troops back in the upcoming weeks and both sides can bounce back. To Michael, Ash and now Jaxon we wish you all the best with your rehab and recovery with regards to your knees. The seniors managed to get the job done in the main game and bounced back strongly from the previous week. Really good solid team effort but even more pleasing to see the younger brigade stepping up to the plate. Lex, Drilla, Knowlsey were all good with young Andy VJ also putting in a solid performance on debut. Also to Curtis, keep buying in and you will continue to hit the scoreboard. Also just like to mention that over the last couple of Sunday’s I have managed to catch up with some Junior Footy at Headquarters and it’s been really refreshing, to Andrew and all the Team you a doing a great job, Big thanks to Dave Hart for your help last Sunday as well, Hope Charlotte is on the mend. Footy Notes Devon Meadows Any danger of us playing a home game! For the 4th time in 5 rounds we find ourselves back on the road, this time down in Crib Point to take on the Magpies. Was nice to have a week off after the not-so-ideal day we had at Karingal 2 weeks back - we handed over the Jason “Whale” Hammond Cup, but look forward to getting another crack at it next year when hopefully we can host the Bulls on our home deck. Some beautiful words were spoken about Whale in the presentation after the seniors and it’s good to see his name live on with enormous respect from both clubs. Well, if a week is a long time in football, then 2 weeks is an eternity so we look forward to this round with fresh eyes and I for one can’t wait to get back into it. Without getting ahead of ourselves, there are a few winnable games for all grades coming up in the next few weeks so let’s get around it as a club and really get the wheels in motion for DMFNC in 2018. Look forward to seeing everyone back at Glover Reserve next week. On a social front, we have a function coming up next week - 2nd June - iPod Shuffle Night - Directly after our home game against Hastings. Congratulations to Kalani Ryan, Jackson Allen and Nick Rowson, on representing the MPNFL U/19 Inter league side last week against the Northern Football League. The boys all played great games and we can’t forget to mention the winning Coach as well, our own Josh Moore, who lead the boys to victory. Well done guys a fantastic achievement. 2 weeks ago the seniors had a very hard fought win up at Red Hill. Kicking against a howling gale in the last quarter, we managed to hang on by 2 points. Tommy Baker was BOG and his contested marking was super. Tyrren Head continues to have a great year, Adam Kirkwood just gets the job done. Peter Hamptons run was super all day and it was great to have big Benny Trivett back in the side. Harley Cole played a super game as well. Big game today against Hastings, and if we bring the same commitment as the last 2 weeks, we are a massive chance to make it 3 in a row.

The reserves were dealt a reality check, and it’s safe to say a few of the boys got ahead of themselves. Nothing like a loss to get the hard work back on track, and we should see a different Rye reserves side, take the field today. The under 19’s went down by 23 points and were well in the game at 3/4 time. Great games by the skipper Barnsey, Jacko Allen, Ben Closter, Robbo, and Goldy. VALE - Betty Plunket 25/10/1933 - 10/05/2018 The club mourns the passing of our esteemed Life Member and passes on our Condolences to the family. R.I.P. - Betty Round 6 saw another good day for the club with all football teams winning and four of the five netball sides also been successful. The U19s leading by the narrowest of margins at quarter time then proceeded to increase their lead to run out 46 point winners. Trailing by 4 points at quarter time the Reserves fought hard to gain ascendancy against 3rd placed Hastings and eventually won by 9 points. In windy conditions the Seniors scores were even at quarter time. Dromana then gained a 2 goal break by the major break. The third term saw both sides scoring goals but Dromana held a 35 point lead at the last break. Both teams kicked 3 goals in the last term with Dromana in front by 38 points at the final siren. The game was followed by the Players Revue which as usual greatly entertained the social room patrons. This week in our YPA sponsored game we face Pearcedale and although they are not travelling well always manage to lift for home games against us so we again need to be on our game to ensure our winning run continues. Congratulations to Ethan Johnstone and Billy Quigley on their selection for the Interleague team that played the Northen League at Preston last Saturday. Footy Notes Red Hill

Firstly a big thanks to all and we mean all the people involved in the Ladies Day lunch. A huge success. When people share a story of surviving cancer, sometimes you need to step back and say “my problems may not be so big.” For some reason our boys decided to let Rye have control for 3 and a half quarters, and then, like Mick Mitchell behind the bar, they turned it on. Johnno Ross went to work and the midfielders were all over the ball like a kelpie at a cricket match. Alas the boys fell short by 2 points. The Mold boys were superb and Dylan H worked hard all day. The Magoos on the other hand shot out of the gate and stamped their authority over a top of the ladder Rye team. Again the backline did a great job holding Rye to 1 goal by the end of the 3rd quarter. The boys let their guard down in the last letting Rye kick a few, and spoil what could have been an old fashion drubbing. Torch Hopgood, Max T and Ty Powell had more of the footy than is legally allowed. I hope you are reading this report before 10.00a.m.The Unders game could prove to be a cracker. A top of the table meeting between two undefeated sides, both with percentage numbers that should be on Wall St. stock market. The Unders did the job on a skilled Rye outfit last week but it will need to have all hands on deck today to steer this ship home. Netball Preview A tough test for the Eagles By David Nagel Already a game and percentage outside the top four, Somerville will need to produce something special if it is to replicate its preliminary final appearance of last year. And something special is exactly what’s required when the Eagles host Tyabb – their conqueror from last year’s preliminary final – at Jones Road today. The Eagles have been going along ok, their three wins have come against teams below them on the ladder in Devon Meadows, Pearcedale and Chelsea, while losses to Dromana, Crib Point and Hastings has left their season evenly balanced after six rounds. The Eagles have had some serious injury concerns this year, but have managed to remain competitive through the outstanding efforts of players like Jaimee Peney, Sara Tanner and Danielle Planner. Tyabb has also had issues around the rub-down table but has still managed a five-one record, the only blemish coming against a fired-up Crib Point in a rematch of last year’s grand final. Birgitta Nemaric has been unstoppable in goals, while Kylie Heib, Megan Williams and Sara Febbo have had important roles to play over the last few weeks of netball. The Eagles will be as ready as they have been all season – but it’s the Yabbies to take the prize by six-to-eight goals. by gutsy and courageous wins over Karingal (42-38) and the Magpies (44-38). They have hardly been dominant, and have games against Dromana, Tyabb and Hastings still to come, but there’s no doubt the Kangaroos are in the thick of the premiership race this year. Sara Drain has moulded a well-drilled team with Emily Zeuschner, Amy Slefendorfas and Jayde Aron all having serious impacts at different stages of the season. Chelsea has been very competitive in recent weeks against Dromana (22-27) and Somerville (26-29) but will need to raise the bar even higher against the Kangas. Lisa Donnellan and Katja Jansen will be brave – but Langy will be far too strong. Crib Point would have enjoyed its break after an extremely-tough three weeks of netball and will look to hit the ground running when it welcomes Devon Meadows to its home court. The Magpies last-three games have been tough alright, winning a close one against Red Hill (40-37), then crushing Tyabb (58-31), before falling short against a powerful Langwarrin (44-38) last start. The Magpies lost the game against Langy in the second quarter, conceding 12 goals to seven in a game that was otherwise a hard-fought affair. Magpies’ defenders Tessa Moncrieff, Adrienne Harris and Leah Moncrieff would have learnt a lot from that match

and will be keen to make amends if the two teams meet again in the finals this year. Devon Meadows had an extremely slow start against Karingal in round six, falling 16-3 behind before showing a lot more promise after quarter time. Luck Hoogenboom (GK) and Alana McDonald (GD) received a lot more support after the first break and will be looking for that same support again. But Cribby will win handsomely. Karingal will look for its fifth win of the season when the Bullettes welcome Red Hill to Naranga Crescent. Abuk Kenyang (GS) and Isabella Riddell (GA) proved too hot for Devon Meadows to handle last time out and will be hoping for a repeat performance again. Bridgette Barry-Murphy and Madi Capsalis gave the Bullettes plenty of drive in that game, and Red Hill midcourters Shannon White, Mia Newman and Emilie Baird will need to be as sharp as a tack to keep those girls under control. Red Hill can throw in a surprise performance now and then, but the Bullettes will win by a double-figure margin. And Dromana should bounce back to the winners list when it travels to the Pearcedale Rec Reserve to take on the Pink Panthers. The Tigers were competitive for three quarters against Hastings, but dropped their bundle in a 21-8 third quarter. Emily and Ruby Wilson and Chloe Birch bounced back strongly in the final term and will take some confidence into this match. The Panthers were no match for Tyabb in round six, but players like Jess Small, Louise Lane and Tara Monshing showed no signs of giving up the season just yet. The Pink Panthers will be brave – but the Tigers will win comfortably. Hastings – winners of its last four games – has the bye.

Both Karingal and Devon Meadows will look to bounce out of the blocks after the interleague bye.

Netball Notes Karingal

The day at home started off with our U17’s hitting out against a tough Devon side. Scores were close until half time when Devon broke away from us in the 3rd qrt and we just couldn’t catch up to their lead, going down by 7 goals. Much improved performance by the whole team overall, well done girls. D grade got straight into it the moment they set foot on court. Leading the whole game & finishing off with a 5123 win. Every player contributed so much on court, great job girls. C grade had to work hard this week to continue to put out a consistent 12 minutes each quarter against a fierce Devon Meadows. Finally finding their rhythm in the 3rd quarter, the girls forged ahead to break away with the dynamic drives of Dani King in goals and the power house of work from Taylah and Kiah in defence the C grade girls finished with a solid 44-23 win. B grade continued to dominate, leading at every quarter and giving themselves every opportunity to rotate combinations and work sharp ball work and contested defence into every play. Another great win with a best on court performance from GA Bec Graham with a 65-22 win A grade were forced to slow down the tempo with wet weather causing havoc on their speedy game plan. The girls worked hard to find the front and deliver the ball cleanly despite physical contest from the Devon girls. A solid four quarter effort to construct a 20 goal win. Today we welcome Red Hill, good luck to all teams! GO BULLETTES!!!!

Langwarrin Round 6 saw us travel down to Crib Point and to the unknown. We knew we were up against two 2017 premiership teams so the challenge was set! Our baby under 17’s kicked the day off with a tremendous win. It was their second for the season and with the hard work they have been putting in it definitely won’t be their last. Next up D grade took the court and blew our opposition away. We controlled the match well from start to finish and stormed away wth a confidence building win. C grade was our first premiership team match up, and although we remained competitive for 3 quarters of the match, it wasn’t enough to stop Crib Point from another win. They were a class outfit and played solid consistent netball, something we will use to create that hunger to beat them next time. Our B babes are having an awesome season so far. Each member is having a ball on court and it is speaking volumes on the scoreboard. The girls have gelled amazingly and will definitely be a finals contender come the seasons end. A grade was the match of the day! 2017 Nepean Premiers versus our undefeated top of the ladder Langy Roos. The match was fast and intense and both teams played strong physical yet clinical netball. Skills were on show and our girls did not disappoint, coming away with a 6 goal win and causing a major upset. Our A girls are going from strength to strength under the expertise of head coach Sara Drain, and will welcome any challenge set by our rivals

Rye It was another tough week for the Demons, coming up against Red Hill. D Grade started off really well, taking home there first win for the 2018 season! Well Done to everyone! Hopefully they can build from this and bring home a few more wins in the next few weeks. Keep up the good work. B.O.C - Bec Broomfield C Grade had a great game on there hands. Goal from goal all game, Red Hill just held on with a two goal win. C Grade will look forward to bringing a win home against Hastings. B.O.C - Emily Harris B Grade had a great start against Red Hill on Saturday. Applying some great pressure and scoring well. Demons started to cough up some balls, whilst Red Hill scored heavily. Demons will work hard in the next couple of weeks and come out strong against Hastings. B.O.C - Lauren Hearn Go Dees!!!!

Netball Notes Red Hill U/17s This week’s game against Pearcedale saw the undefeated U/17s face their first loss in definitely the toughest game of the season so far. Heads were held high the entire game as the scores were even after the first quarter, however it only took a couple of turn-overs in the second quarter for Pearcedale to get on a roll and have a clear win. Stand out players, Emily, Zoe and Lucy H kept the rest of the team in good spirits as all of the girls kept up the intensity until the very end. D grade A tough game for D grade against Rye. With new players coming in every week the girls are starting to come together as a team! Great work by the girls in defence Lucy and Saskia and to Claudia for her best game of the season. C grade Strong team play in the first quarter gave a comfortable 8 goal lead at half time! A solid comeback in the third quarter by Rye created a delightful clash! Strong defensive and mid court play helped secure a 36-34 win. B grade Strong win from B grade against Rye on Saturday. The girls pushed to play a consistent 4 quarters achieving a massive 69 goals scored. Also a great effort from the defenders keeping them to only 19 goals! Keen to train hard over the next couple of weeks and take on Karingal next round!!

Hastings The U17s had a great game against Dromana and the game could have gone either way. We didn’t come up with the win, going down by 6 goals. The girls turned over and undervalued possession of the ball. Losing games like this will only make the team stronger as it showed the ability to dig deep and fight out games. Best on went to Holly. D grade continues to chip away at improving their skills but Dromana were far too strong. We will continue to stick together and work on our understanding of the game to improve our results as the year goes on. C grades defense end was once again a stand out for them, contesting rebounds and fighting for loose balls. The girls showing great fight to start fresh in the second half and take it up to Dromana. We will continue training hard, working on new skills to bring to the court on game day. This weeks award goes to Candice. B grade had 4 under 17’s topping up their numbers this week. Stepping up to play B grade will develop their skills under pressure. Unfortunately we didn’t win the match but the junior development of our young players will ensure our future is in good hands.

A grade were without Sarah and Darcy, so the task was left to the remaining seven girls to tackle Dromana. Nicole had a strong game in WD and Armani in the GS position converted at 88%. They had an exceptional 3rd quarter extending the lead by 13 goals. Madz in the GD position restricted her opponent to just 4 goals for the second half of the game.

Chelsea A Grade started off slow against Somerville last week. A few changes were made and the team started to flow. The playing group lifted in the final quarter to come back, to only go down by 3. Lisa was a key player to lift spirits and make plays happen, earning best on. B Grade faced a strong Somerville side. It was an incredibly tough game. We welcomed Kym to the team who was strong in defence. Kayla played her heart out, ran hard in goal attack and pushed herself to her limits. She was a great leader. Hannah played one of her best games, putting into practice some of the things she has learnt. Hannah and Kayla were hard to separate for best on today. C grade started off a little slow, but were able to continue chipping away, going into 3/4 time with the scores level. A huge last quarter performance saw the girls get up with a 5 goal victory. It was a real team effort, with everyone giving 100%. As always our defence was amazing winning plenty of balls for us. Best on, however, goes to Andrea who controlled the centre and provided leadership and poise all game. D grade had a great game. We didn’t win, but we played strongly as a team. It was a close game; goal for goal in the first half. Unfortunately Somerville pulled away in the 3rd quarter, and our amazing come-back in the 4th didn’t quite make it. A big shout out to Georgia who was competitive all game and showed great leadership in defence. Thank you Side Street Cafe for best-on vouchers for all teams, all season!

Netball Notes Tyabb We came into the round aiming for a clean sweep and it was D Grade who started the day with their strongest win of the season. It was a brilliant whole team performance, the girls have been training well but this was the first game where everyone committed to the team values for the entire match. Player of the match was Mikayla who worked tirelessly for four quarters. C Grade was a tough game against a well drilled Pearcedale side. They were able to capitalise on turnovers extremely well throughout the game which gave us a ten goal lead coming into the last quarter. A comeback in the last quarter by the opposition saw us threatened but the girls worked hard in the latter stages to win by five. B Grade combined well throughout the match to show some excellent defensive pressure to force the opposition into many errors right across the court. The girls were challenged to complete different goals in each quarter which they were able to do extremely well. Onto a big test this week in Somerville which should see where our best can get us. A Grade started slowly in the match but were able to step up in each quarter to show some excellent new combinations. Our defensive pressure across the court was able to slow the ball movement down when Pearcedale were in attack which allowed our defensive combinations to take many intercepts, and keep the ball coming back to our attacking end. Somerville Round 6 was always going to be an interesting one considering we had never come up against Chelsea before. Pushing past the uncertainty, the girls played hard and came away with some solid wins. D Grade - With Tayla stepping in as pseudo coach, the D grade girls started off their first half a bit slow, but pulled it together in the second half which changed the game completely. The girls finished off with another win, making it 6 from 6. C Grade - We have not had the opportunity to play Chelsea before and the C grade girls knew it was going to be a tough match yesterday. The girls fought hard and unfortunately, Chelsea went to another level in the last quarter, running away with a 5 goal win. B Grade - Another solid win by the B grade girls this week against Chelsea. They got off to a flyer, scoring 20 goals in the first quarter to their 1. This continued on throughout the game to finish off with another strong win to continue the road to the 4-peat. A Grade - With 3 coaches on the sideline, the A grade girls had plenty of people to turn to. They played their own game throughout the entire match, and although there were some close calls, the girls managed to come away with another strong win. With a rest over inter-league weekend, the girls will be

working hard and refining their plays in preparation to play the Yabbies today. It is always a tough battle against Tyabb, but were always up for the challenge. Don’t forget; June 2nd - Mid-Season Ball. #BRRKK

Pearcedale The 1st 6 rounds have gone so fast for season 2018 & still united we fight each game, win or lose as a team. Though injuries plague our ranks our resolve remains true. Each player working to improve while wearing pink & blue. Our 17’s have shown their might, their eyes fixed on that flag, & beating Red Hill by 18 goals proved it is theirs to grab. Back to square one went C & D when injury forced a rebuild. To their credit, they fought hard but losses weren’t quite healed. Heroes come in all kind of forms & ours form A & B, for though they are not winning, their spirit and fight are key. We’ll keep fighting with all we can, all grades, no matter the score. Cause we know the time will come when you hear the Panthers ROAR!

Dromana Welcome back to the home and away season with all of our netballers nice and refreshed after a week off for the interleague games against Northern Football Netball League last weekend. Before the break we discovered first hand that Hastings has a very-improved team this year, they moved the ball quickly and defended our girls well which is all you can really ask for. But we put that loss behind us today and focus on the big trip to Pearcedale where hopefully we can bounce back to the winners list. It’s great to have three teams – C, D and 17-under – all in the top four at the moment and our A and B Grade teams are very close to sneaking their way in. It’s great to have such enthusiasm around the club and we look forward to a strong middle and very strong finish to the season.

Netball Notes Crib Point U/17 had just 7 girls who played a great first half but ran out of legs and allowed Langwarrin to run away with it. BOC was Lily who played well in goals against strong defenders. D Grade came up against a very strong side who were just too powerful against our girls and played a very physical brand of netball. BOC went to India who played a great game down the defensive end. C Grade had another solid win thanks to their whole court pressure and defensive teamwork. BOC went to Laura in GK for her outstanding game and a special mention to Amie in GD as together these two, created many turnovers. B Grade were beaten by a very strong opponent who presented a real physical challenge, which we were unable to match. We can takeaway quite a few things from this game and build on some team strategies to improve our work rate on court. BOC went to Kelly who brings great experience and is a steadier through the midcourt. A Grade was expecting a really tough match and they got it. The girls were not let down by Langwarrin who were hard at the ball, and took it to us at every single pass, contesting every ball. We had another slow start and did peg them back once we switched on, however, we just did not quite get them in the end. Langwarrin served up a great challenge to our girls and we are all excited for the next time they meet. BOC went to Shaye who has proven to be a great assets to the side. Today we play Devon Meadows at home so letâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s bounce back after the break with a win.

Devon Meadows A Grade - Tough game as the rain started. We didnâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;t start great, letting Karingal get a 13 goal lead. Heading into the 2nd quarter, a few positional changes made & we made a run for it. Stepping up to the pace we continued to drive the ball through the court. Unable to catch the lead, we focused on our targets and what we could achieve with some good positives coming through. The break is welcomed, as we continue to build on our games. BOC: Shannon Gill - WA worked hard creating space & being the option when needed. Dug deep each quarter & never gave up! B Grade - Undermanned heading into a game against Karingal was always going to be challenging, add illness and niggly injuries and it was going to be tough out there. We had some sleek patches of play and when the ball flowed utilising our angles it looked great. We welcomed Jess, Kylie & Brooke up from C grade and are thankful for their contribution to our game. The break has come at a good time for us, we need to recover, regroup & set some goals for the rest of the season. We need to come back from the break focussed, spirited & enjoying it as a team! Best on - Ella, relentless in defence, for never giving up, contesting fiercely & mixing up her defence on the shot. C Grade - After last weeks loss to red hill the girls were all ready to redeem themselves this week. Karingal were

quick out of the blocks getting an early lead. However the girls dug in deep in the second quarter with some fantastic defensive pressure from Elyse, Katie and Em which reduce the deficit to 5 at half time. The girls fought hard in the second hard but Karingal were to good in the end, going down 21-42. Lots of positives to take out of the game which will only make us stronger in the coming weeks. BOC: Kylie H for keeping a positive attitude and strong holds in the ring. D Grade - Between injuries and sickness d grade was down to only 6 players heading in to take on a strong Karingal. We were fortunate enough to have 3 under 17s step up and they got out there and held their own with the support of the senior girls. We had some great patches of play but unfortunately Karingal was like a well oiled machine and took a solid lead. BOC - Jess for her intercepts and fight. U17s - Another win for the 17s this week showing that our team is starting to mesh well together. Still plenty of versatility in the girls across the mid court and defence end, allowing for movement in these positions. From this Courtney was able to show off a strong debut GK effort. Emily was BOC for stepping up and having a strong half in centre, despite having some doubt. The footwork practise and a focus on chasing the loose ball at training showed some noticeable improvements across the court, always pleasing to a coach! Looking forward to noticing these changes each week with practise and patience! Today we head down to Cribby for what is always a great fought out contest. YOUNG TALENT GALORE ON THE PENINSULA The quality of young football talent on the Mornington Peninsula has been highlighted with 11 players from MPNFL clubs being selected in the Vic Country Squad for the 2018 AFL NAB Championships. A staggering 12 players from the Dandenong Stingrays have been selected in the 38-man squad, with Beaconsfield’s Mitchell Riordan joining a long list of MPNFL players on the verge of final selection. Round One of the AFL NAB Championships takes place on Saturday June 9 when Vic Country take on the Allies at Spotless Stadium in Sydney at 1.10pm. Vic Country will have its final practice game this Sunday when they play the Allies at IKON Park Carlton at 10.00am. STINGRAYS OVER POWER THE RANGERS The Dandenong Southern Stingrays have survived a gallant effort from the Murray Bushrangers, kicking six lastquarter goals to score a 22-point victory at Rams Arena last Saturday. The Stingrays lead all day, but due poor kicking at goal left the Bushrangers in the game, before a three-goal effort in the last quarter from Corey Ellison saw the final scores, 16.13 (109) to 14.3 (87). Both teams were keen to get physical early, with a big showing of AFL recruiters on hand to watch the top two teams in the competition. Stingrays coach Craig Black was pleased with the end result. “We knew that Murray were going to challenge us and try to deny our style of play, but luckily we adjusted to the tempo of the game and we were good enough to hold on,” Black said. Black had a lot of praise to dish out for his men – particularly noteworthy were defender Jai Taylor, collecting numerous disposals and rebounds, whilst key defenders Angus Paterson and Sam DeKoning stood tall in the face of an attacking Bushrangers forward line. Zac Foot gave one of his best performances through the middle, never relenting in his hard-bodied attack on the footy, and ball magnets Campbell Hustwaite and Sam Fletcher again shone brightly. In attack, Lachlan McDonnell took his chances and continued his streak of great performances across halfforward kicking three goals, while second gamer Ned Cahill’s pressure in and around the contests was a highlight for many.

Dandenong started well, kicking the first goal of the game, before it was quickly matched by Murray in what would develop into a clear theme of the day. Both sides created their opportunities from clean centre clearances and dominant forward lines. The first quarter was a great wrestle, with the Stingrays holding a three-point lead at the first break. Murray came out of the box kicking the first goal but, never a team to lay down though, the Stingrays took their game up a notch and suddenly it was the Bushrangers’ on the back foot. The Stingrays slotted majors in quick succession through Jamie Plumridge, Corey Ellison and Bailey Williams and were gaining some momentum by really driving through the centre corridor. But too many shots went wayward, allowing Murray to rebound by kicking a couple of their own. The Stingrays once again took control kicking the last two goals, going in to the big break leading by 22 points, 7.10.52 to 5.0.30. The Bushrangers once again burst out of the blocks at the beginning of the third quarter, kicking the first three goals with the aid of the breeze, before the Stingrays managed to peg one back through Bailey Schmidt. Once again wayward kicking at goal hindered the Stingrays ability to apply scoreboard pressure – and their opponents were not afraid to let them know about it, with Murray adding another major to close the margin to a straight kick late in the quarter. To their credit the Stingrays managed to rise to another level and apply their trademark pressure on the Bushrangers, forcing them to kick backwards and retreat on several occasions. They conceded a goal to Jake Frawley and in the last 20 seconds of the quarter and then gave another away to Ellison. The Stingrays held a 14-point lead into the last break, but would be coming home assisted with the breeze. The Stingrays were told to come out firing, with nothing to lose, a prediction that unfortunately for the shell-shocked Bushrangers came true. Dandenong were playing on at every opportunity, taking plenty of risks and reaping the rewards, slamming on six last-quarter goals. The willingness of the Stingray midfielders to take the game on with a bit of run and carry got them across the line in the end. With another scalp under their belt the Stingrays now hold top spot on the TAC Cup ladder, leading into this week’s TAC Cup bye. The Stingrays will return to Shepley Oval on Sunday 3 June at 10.45am taking on the Sandringham Dragons, which will be followed by another TAC Cup game in Gippsland Power versus Geelong Falcons at 2.15pm.
