When Doves fly...
Easter Round Good Friday 30th March 2018
Doveton v Cranbourne
AFL South East WELCOME TO SEASON 2018 On behalf of the AFL South East Commission I wish everyone involved in the Mornington Peninsula Nepean Football League (MPNFL) and the South East Football Netball League (SEFNL) a successful 2018 season It has been an eventful summer to say the least in the region. For the first time in many years, the MPNFL will return to a divisional structure, with seven clubs from the former Peninsula competition and three from Nepean now comprising the Chisholm Division 1. The balance of Peninsula and Nepean clubs will participate in the Bendigo Bank Division 2. The Commission’s preferred vision was to have a threedivisional competition also involving MPNFL and SEFNL Clubs. This would have provided even more competitive balance, reduced costs for clubs and a potential point of entry for new clubs. However, this was rejected by MPNFL clubs, which exercised their right in accordance with their Rules to block the strategy. SEFNL will now pursue an alternative divisional model beyond 2018. Nonetheless we have an exciting season in prospect. Reigning premiers Frankston YCW and Sorrento will clash in a mouth watering clash in Round 1. One scribe described this as the most anticipated game in 30 years. It will be the first time these two power-house clubs have met for premiership points since 1989. At the other end of the scale there are several clubs in Division 2 which have not played finals for some time. The opportunity exists for them to rebuild and see some September action this year. In all likelihood one club which has not experienced premiership glory for many years will do so in 2018 and advance to the top division in 2019. There was a burst of publicity several weeks ago relating to country competitions. We are very fortunate in the South East region to have two very strong senior leagues, which are governed under the AFL regional model. At one end of the scale we have clubs which are capable of developing players who move comfortably into TAC Cup, AFL and VFL clubs. In recent times, players such as Hunter Clarke, Luke Davies-Uniacke, Nick Coffield and many others have progressed from this region to AFL ranks. At the other end of the scale former AFL players are attracted to our region due to the strength of competitions. This year we welcome players such as Jarrod Grant, Mitch Hallahan and Matthew Boyd into our ranks for the first time. Former Melbourne players Luke Tapscott and Chris Dawes will again spearhead Sorrento’s charge for a final’s berth and Travis Tuck will add further strength to reigning SEFNL premier Berwick. PLAYER PAYMENTS Clubs have been advised that in its second year of operation the Player Payment threshold for all senior clubs in the region will be $150,000.
While some leniency was applied in 2017, in 2018 strict compliance will be enforced. This is essential for the fairness of the competition, but also a way of assisting the sustainability of clubs by trying to curb the extravagant spending by clubs. It is anticipated that the current threshold will reduce over time. INTER LEAGUE While there is a clear focus on round 1 over the Easter weekend (particularly for MPNFL Division 1 clubs), the Leagues are also preparing for their respective Inter League matches in May. The number-3 ranked league in the State, the MPNFL, will take on the Northern Football Netball League at Cramer Street, Preston, coached by Chris Holcombe. We will also have an Under 19 representative game on that day, coached by Josh Moore. Our women will also get the chance to play representative football for the first time when our regional competition (South East Women’s Football) will field a team against Northern, with our team coached by Megan Snart. SEFNL, in an ironic match up, will be pitted against Yarra Ranges at Holm Park, Beaconsfield in a curtain raiser to a Richmond v Sandringham VFL game. Former Berwick premiership coach Rhys Nielson will take charge. NETBALL One of the advantages our region has over neighbouring metropolitan leagues is the benefit clubs derive from a strong netball focus. During our football review, it became evident to AFLSE that the close relationship between football and netball was a key to the viability of clubs as a whole. Accordingly, AFLSE has appointed a dedicated netball operations manager in Samantha Downie to oversee netball across the region. Sam is an experienced netball person, having played, coached, administered and umpired during her long-term involvement in the sport. Sam’s focus will be to manage the MPNFL and SEFNL netball competitions with a particular emphasis on strategies around participation, equalisation, competitiveness and umpiring. CLUB SUPPORT PROGRAMS AFLSE would also like to thank the Melbourne Racing Club Foundation for the continued funding of the Club Support Program. The Club Support Program was rolled out in 2016 with all 22 MPNFL clubs receiving access to the Sports Chaplaincy Australia Club Care Access and SALT Education program. In addition to the Club Access program, the 2018 program will see the delivery of Mental Health and WellBeing sessions. Further details will be sent to clubs in the next week. To everyone involved in our football and netball clubs, I wish you all good luck for season 2018. John Anderson Region General Manager AFL South East

AFL Vic Country AFL VIC COUNTRY WELCOME TO SEASON 2018 As the cooler months start to creep in and daylight savings comes to an end, excitement is brewing across country Victoria for the return of community football. Whether you are playing, coaching, umpiring, volunteering or cheering on your team from the sidelines, the month of April brings with it a feeling of optimism and anticipation for what lies ahead for season 2018. The rapid growth in female football has continued to reach new heights, with the establishment of 392 new teams in 2017 bringing the total number of female teams to 747 across the state. We look forward to seeing more females pull on the boots and showcase their skills throughout country Victoria the year. Season 2018 will see the roll out of a number of new initiatives, including the implementation of the AFL’s new NAB AFL Auskick 2.0 program, an expanded Victorian FIDA Football League competition for players with an intellectual disability, as well as the acquisition of seven dedicated full time V/Line Umpire Academy Program Managers who are now responsible for driving umpire development regionally. The work carried out by Region Commissions, in conjunction with leagues and clubs, to embrace these initiatives, along with the many other programs conducted across the state is vital to ensuring country football is in good stead for continued growth in the future.
For the second year in a row, the highest ranked country representative match will be played at the MCG as part of the 2018 AFL Country Game between Geelong and Essendon. The Ballarat Football Netball League and Goulburn Valley League (7 v 8) will run out on the hallowed turf in season 2018, while the leagues’ Under 19 representative matches will be played at Punt Road Oval. In addition, the current number-one-ranked Geelong Football Netball League will be looking to secure its third straight Community Championships title when it lines up against the Eastern Football League at Etihad Stadium. The match will be a curtain raiser to the Round 9 AFL game between St. Kilda and Collingwood on Saturday night. This is a fantastic occasion for some of community football’s best senior players to run out and showcase their skills on the game’s biggest stage and provide the opportunity for city and country football fans to come together and celebrate all that is good in country football. Last but not least I would like to wish all players, coaches, umpires, volunteers and administrators the best of luck for the season ahead- I hope it is a successful one for all involved.
AFL Victoria Country Football & Development Manager Stephen O’Donohue
Country football’s contribution to the national game was strengthened last year, with 26 male and six female players from regional Victoria drafted to AFL and AFLW clubs. This achievement is a credit to both the talent pathway programs and the local community clubs which continue to provide the foundation for the next generation of stars to reach the elite level. In other football news, AFL Victoria is delighted to announce the return of the WorkSafe AFL Victoria Community Championships at the MCG.

Footy Preview By David Nagel Western Bulldogs premiership player Matthew Boyd will make his Doveton debut when the Doves and Cranbourne kick off the 2018 South East Football Netball League season with a Good Friday blockbuster at Robinson Oval. For the Doves it’s a case of same time, same place, but a totally different opponent as the one of the pioneers of Good Friday football welcomes a SEFNL powerhouse to its home. The Doves have a perfect record on this day over the last three years – but against Hampton Park who has now moved on to the Southern Football League. One thing is for certain – there’ll be no repeat of the Doves’ 135-point victory over the Redbacks from 2017 this time around. The Eagles are a totally different proposition altogether. They played in six consecutive grand finals – winning in 2011 and 2016 – before falling to Narre Warren in last year’s preliminary final. It’s a fantastic record and testament to a core group of players that have stuck together through thick and thin. Four consecutive grand final defeats would have ripped the heart out of most clubs. Brandon Osborne and Stu Morrish lead a dour defence, Ryan Davey, Shaun Marusic and Luke Bee-Hugo provide a plethora of drive through the midfield, while champion full-forward Marc Holt and his willing sidekick Troy Tharle have clunked many a mark in the front half. But the Eagles will have a slightly different look today. Holt will miss through suspension while key cogs in the midfield in Mat Fletcher (Devon Meadows) and Max Gearon (Mornington) have headed south for the winter. Those coal-face players have been replaced with speed, with Clayton McCartney (Doveton) and former Officer wingman Tom Marks possessing enormous linebreaking potential. Eagles coach Steve O’Brien – who coached Doveton in 2016 – said there is genuine excitement around the club heading into the new year.
Tall, strong and agile...Cranbourne midfielder Shaun Marusic is the complete package. “It has been a terrific pre-season and one that has created a lot of excitement around the place,” O’Brien explained. “The club feels re-energised which I think can be put down to young players clearly seeing further opportunities this year and the natural excitement generated whenever a change of coach occurs.” The Eagles’ new leader said the departure of Fletcher and Gearon had opened the door for change. “They’re both great players but I am looking forward to developing and changing the makeup of our side.” he said. “Over the last few seasons there has been minimal change week to week, but we see an opportunity to add speed to our side and how this impacts our playing style will be interesting to watch as it evolves.” And the Doves – well they’ve had a roller-coaster offseason. There appeared no-way back after the loss of star midfielders Nick Battle, Michael Henry and Sam Raru, while the departure of Lachie Batten, Jake Blackwood,

Footy Preview Ryan Hendy and McCartney appeared to put further nails in the coffin. But – as you would expect from Doveton – they’ve fought…and fought back hard. Returning club stalwart Daniel Charles has a talented young list at his disposal, complemented by an impressive new list of recruits. The likes of Tyson Bellinger, Dylan Bowman, Josh Bradley, Shannon Brennan, Malis Lokeron, Jake Nicholson and Will Smith have all had a taste of the top flight, while Beau Anthony and Brad O’Brien are two talented youngsters set to make their mark. Port Melbourne premiership player Jake Dermott returns to the club, while Matt Stapleton, Alex Mastromanno and Riley D’Arcy all look set for big years. Sam Ellis returns, while exciting ruckman Gach Nyuon will play a full season at the club, freeing up champion ruckman Russell Gabriel to spend more time up forward. Big Russ could form a potent duo with full forward Taylor Joyce who has beautiful hands in attack. And then there’s the recent signing of Boyd…one that has buoyed the club! In one of the biggest recruiting coups in local football, the three-time All-Australian and member of the Western Bulldogs’ drought-breaking premiership team of 2016 will play several games for the Doves this season – debuting today. “I had a couple of conversations with Aaron (Doveton President Aaron Henwood) and it just went from there, basically I’ve been getting itchy feet and the offer from Doveton came at the perfect time,” Boyd said. “And now that it’s done I’m really looking forward to it. I’m a competitive beast and nothing ever fills that void of not playing football. “I can’t wait to get out there against Cranbourne on Good Friday.” Boyd will need to play a blinder to tip the scales the Doves’ way…it’s the Eagles to win a tight tussle by 14 points.

Carl Packs a Punch Carl Fletcher may have packed many personal belongings in his move down from Sydney, but his passion for the game and dedication to the growth and development of umpiring is set to be his most precious cargo of all. It’s time to blow the whistle on one of AFL South East’s newest recruits who has the huge responsibility of overseeing a fresh and regional approach to umpiring in 2018. Fletcher – AFL South East Regional Director of Umpiring - brings an exceptional record of on-and-off-field excellence to the table. As a field umpire he took charge of the AFL Sydney Premier Division Grand Finals of 2013/14 and was voted the AFL Sydney Umpire of the Year in both 2014/15 by the Premier Division coaches. He gets what elite level umpiring should look like – but at the same time has his focus firmly fixed on the growth and development of the third team on the park. Fletcher’s first eight years of a decade-long stint with AFL NSW/ACT was performed under the title of Umpiring Development Coordinator. It was there he would oversee the growth, coaching, management and development of umpires within AFL Sydney Juniors and Northern NSW leagues.
He led the growth of Sydney Juniors umpiring, with 500 umpires and 30 volunteer umpire coaches under his auspice when he left AFL NSW/ACT at the end of 2017. For the last two years he has been Football Operations Manager for AFL Sydney Juniors, overseeing the management of the competition which included 50 clubs and more than 500 teams. But umpiring, well it’s his first love! “The thing I love most about umpiring is to watch a young person come into the game, with no experience at all, and watch them grow in confidence and competence to the point where they can take control of a senior game of football,” Fletcher said. “And the way I look at it, being an umpire is just like being a player at a football club, we come together as a family and community of people who just love their footy. Umpiring is great fun and develops communication and leadership skills as well.” Regarding his new role with AFL South East, there’ll be no side-stepping or running backwards to enter the contest. “I am really excited about being in this role and can’t wait for the year ahead,” he said. “I am looking forward to working with all AFL South East staff, clubs, umpires and sponsors to set up effective

structures, programs and an umpiring pathway that will grow and develop umpiring.” AFL South East Region General Manager John Anderson said Fletcher’s role was crucial to the ongoing development of umpiring in the region. “Carl’s appointment starts a new era whereby AFL South East now oversees all umpiring in the region, which was formerly the domain of South East Juniors and the Southern Umpires Association (SUA),”Anderson said. “AFL South East’s agreement with the SUA allows us to create a regional umpiring department which services all affiliated senior and junior leagues in the region. Carl’s appointment is integral in the development of umpires across all age groups. “I would also like to thank the executive of the SUA for their co-operation in formulating this ground-breaking agreement and they will continue to support umpiring across the south east region.” If you are interested in umpiring in 2018 please contact Carl Fletcher via umpiring@aflse.com.au or 0425 256 504. Carl Fletcher has umpiring running through his veins and is keen to make a mark in AFL South East.

Club Notes Doveton
The Doveton Football Netball Club would like to extend a warm welcome to all new and old supporters, sponsors and members. This season has begun with exciting changes, a new senior coach; Daniel Charles who is a third generation Doveton man with a passion for junior development. He appointed Senior assistant Ricky Hayes a well-respected Doveton talent and we have welcomed a new Reserves Coach; Dave Jensen. In a recruiting coup for the Doves, former AFL star Matthew Boyd has signed with the club; he retired last year after a magnificent 292-game career and is currently a development coach for Collingwood Football Club. There is a majority of current, loyal players that have re-signed for 2018. Their contribution does not go un-noticed as they are what the playing group is built around and are a vital and valuable part of the club. Matt Stapleton returns to our club as the Senior Captain joined by Jake Dermott who is a Port Melbourne premiership player, Gash Nyuon who was rookie listed at Essendon Football Club, Russell Gabriel our two-time SE Football League Best and Fairest winner and Frankston team of the year and Jarrod Boumann who played for Hawthorn. Doveton have also enlisted Riley D’arcy and Alex Mastromanno adding to their already talented side. President and player, Aaron Henwood is keen to continue to build the professional profile of the Doveton Football Club, promote the participation and achievements of its teams and ensure the club’s growth and success. Together with the committee members, new initiatives will be introduced this year while ensuring the club continues to run successfully, efficiently and is leading positive influence on the families in our local community. The Doveton Football Club is registered with the White Ribbon Organisation and actively raise awareness and ‘draw the line’ against disrespectful language and violent behaviour against women. Well…hasn’t that gone way too quick!! It feels as though we only just packed up the rooms to hand over to the cricket club and already we have been handed the keys back……. how time fly’s! Pre-season has been solid and with a few new recruits and players exiting the turnover of players has been obvious yet a positive for us. Under new senior coach Steve O’Brien, the youth are certainly going to get an opportunity to strut their stuff and we are pretty excited to see how they have gone through pre-season. Our hit outs against Bonbeach, Rowville and Oakleigh Districts have been solid and the signs are good that we are going to be in for another great season. OB joining us isn’t the only change amongst the ranks this year, both on or off field. Dom Carosella has stepped up from Under 19s coach to take on the reserves job while the dynamic duo of club Life Members and we have four boys at the Stingrays for 2018 including Corey Ellison, Jarryd Barker, Jake Carosella and Luca Bellinvia, as well as Nathan Gardiner back at Frankston and Anthony Vella again at Port Melbourne. From the off-field aspect, Gerry Kelly has returned to take the Presidency over from Shane Baker. Gerry was President for six years prior to Bakes’ reign and it’s great to have him back involved. We also welcome back our sponsors from last year as well as a few new ones to add to our growing list. These include Stockdale & Leggo, F45 Training and Pizza888. This week we kick the season off against Doveton on Good Friday and we’re thrilled to be a part of this day. And more so, we are keen to see what our guys have in store for us as we head in to season 2018 with confidence that we will again challenge for the flag. Go Eagles!!

Stingrays
Stingrays clip the Falcons wings, dominating the scoreboard. The Dandenong Southern Stingrays kicked five goals in the second quarter against the Geelong Falcons and were never challenged thereafter in the 15.10 (100) to 6.11 (47) romp at GMHBA Stadium on Sunday in the round 1 clash. The Stingrays had nine separate goal kickers and welcomed the return from ACL injures in over age players Aaron Darling (3 goals) and Jake Frawley, whilst Geelong Falcons Charlie Sprague kicked 3 goals for the wayward Falcons. While the Falcons were completely smashed on the scoreboard at GMHBA Stadium in front of a good crowd, they had their fair share of the ball but wasted too many opportunities in front of goal. But it was an even classy Stingrays team that looked like they had winners in all positions, with abundant of height, speed on the outside, grunt on the inside and a love for each other right up until the final siren. They were led sensationally by key on-ballers Campbell Hustwaite (21 possessions and two goals), Jai Taylor (2 goals), William Hamill (19), while Mitch Riordan also played an integral role.
Stingrays new-look half-back line performed well, with 19-year-old Angus Patterson slotting in seamlessly at CHF, whilst 17-year-old Hayden Young looked comfortable in his second TAC Cup game and were well supported superb run and carry from Jake Frawley and William Hamill. Adding to the strong backline was naming and playing all 197cm and above players who would play through the midfield and forward could have gone either way, but the speed and athleticism shown by all players would have opposition sides vary in the coming weeks. Riley Bowman was probably the standout on the day, kicking 2 goals and caused a lot of issues for the Falcons defensive as his movement, below his knees and kicking is elite. Whilst, Bailey Williams and Bailey Schmidt had solids games roaming the forward-line having stints in the Ruck. Stingrays Talent Manager Mark Wheeler was pleased his team was able to fire first up after being smashed at the same venue in the finals last year. “For as long as I can remember we haven’t won at GMHBA Stadium against the Falcons,” Wheeler said. “The anticipation after the pre-season and playing on an AFL ground makes the game a bit bigger, plus taking on the 2017 Premiers on their home turf.” “It’s hard to usually calm our players who have a little stage fright but we fielded a round 1 team with the most experience in the history of the Stingrays in the TAC Cup.”
The Dandenong Stingrays run out for their first game of the season. Dandenong Stingrays 3.2-20 8.6-54 12.7-79 15.10-100 Geelong Falcons 0.5-5 1.8-14 3.9-27 6.11-47 Stingrays Goal Kickers: A. Darling 3, J. Taylor 2, C. Hustwaite 2, F. Bayne 2, R. Bowman 2, T. Bedford, S. Cumming, B. Schmidt, J. Hickey Stingrays Best Players: J. Taylor, C. Hustwaite, M. Riordan, R. Bowman, W. Hamill, T. Bedford Beaconsfield’s Mitch Riordan drives the Stingrays forward against Geelong Falcons.

Bulldog great signs with Doves Doveton’s massive seasonopening clash against Cranbourne just got a whole lot bigger after the Doves secured the services of Western Bulldogs star Matthew Boyd. In one of the biggest recruiting coups in local football, the three-time All-Australian and member of the Bulldogs’ droughtbreaking premiership team of 2016 will play several games for the Doves this season. Boyd, now a development coach with Collingwood, will work his playing schedule around his coaching commitments with the Magpies. He will make his debut in a blockbuster Good Friday clash against the Eagles at the Doves home ground at Robinson Oval. The 35-year-old Boyd, who retired last year after a magnificent 292-game career, said it was funny how the cards had fallen – leading to his signing with the Doves.
“I’m a bit speechless and a little bit excited at the moment, it’s not every day that you have a player with the credentials of Matthew Boyd join your club,” Henwood said. “It’s absolutely brilliant for the club. “We’ve made no secret of the fact that we’re going into this season with a young list, and what better way to fast-track their development with one of the most wellrespected figures in the game. “And it’s not just what he has done on the footy field, he is a quality person who is going to be a tremendous asset to not only Doveton but the league. “We’re super excited and can’t wait for the game against Cranbourne on Good Friday.” Boyd, married with three children, said he was looking forward to sharing his new journey with his family. “I used to love going to the local footy with my dad you remember those days - and it was a big motivating factor to get the family away from that professional environment and get them involved a bit more. “As I said, I can’t wait to get in amongst it.”
“There is a small connection there, I went to primary school with Aaron (Doveton President Aaron Henwood) but apart from that it just came through to talking to a mate from my daughter’s school,” said Boyd, who retired after a 33-possession game against Hawthorn last year. Despite being one of the most decorated, well-respected and hard-nosed figures during his 16 years in the AFL, Boyd said he was surprisingly nervous about entering his new surroundings. “It already feels like I’m out of my comfort zone, being with the one club for so long you become used to that environment and this will be a new and exciting challenge,” he said. “Obviously we have a pretty young group at Doveton, so if I can pass on some of my experience and then learn something back from the playing group it should work out pretty well in the end.” Boyd’s journey to the big time has been well documented. A Narre Warren junior he played with the Dandenong Stingrays but was forced to do things the hard way, playing with Frankston before being picked up by the Bulldogs in the 2002 rookie draft.
Matthew Boyd will make his debut for Doveton in a Good Friday blockbuster against Cranbourne.
Doveton president Henwood admitted it was still a bit surreal to have the three-time best and fairest winner on the books.

A regional approach to umpiring It has been a long off season and now we are finally here for the opening round of 2018. While all clubs have been carefully preparing their playing lists in the hope of premiership glory, the umpires have also been eagerly awaiting the first bounce of the season. Season 2018 brings a new direction for umpiring within the AFL South East commission. Umpiring has long been managed by the Southern Umpires Association (SUA), with dedicated volunteers leading the strategy, coaching and management of umpiring throughout the region. During the off-season AFL South East and Southern Umpires Association reached an agreement to hand over these responsibilities to the AFL South East Commission. Through this agreement I have been appointed as the Regional Director of Umpiring and I am pleased to advise that Leigh Buwalda has been appointed as an Umpire Development Coordinator to help with the recruitment, retention and development of umpires. Leigh and I both look forward to working with all umpires, and in particular building strong relationships with clubs across the six junior and senior leagues serviced by umpiring. I am pleased to advise of the coaches that have been appointed for season 2018. Dave Golby has been appointed as the Head Coach of Umpiring.
Dave will be supported by Field Coaches Brett Gent and Dale Armstrong, Boundary Coach Adam Holland and Goal Coach Troy Bellchambers. These coaches will all be well supported by numerous assistant coaches and observers who will be there to support the development of umpires throughout the region. Umpire training continues to be based out of Kananook Reserve, Kananook, while in the South East umpiring has a new home at Carlisle Park in Cranbourne. Umpire training is every Monday and Wednesday night and anyone interested in getting involved is welcome to attend. As we embark on the opening rounds of season 2018, I wish all clubs the very best for the season ahead. I also want to take this chance to thank all umpires for their involvement this year and wish everyone an enjoyable season. Carl Fletcher AFLSE Regional Director of Umpiring

Netball Preview By David Nagel
Another exciting season of netball begins in the South East Football Netball League when Doveton and Cranbourne do battle in a repeat of last year’s A Grade elimination final. The Doves will be getting sick of the sight of the Eagles with this the third consecutive game with the girls from Casey Fields as their opponents. The Doves were far too good in round 18 last year, winning 47-28, before Donna Wilson and her Eagles returned serve with a 46-32 victory in the elimination final a week later. Cranbourne then surprised the SEFNL netball world by defeating Beaconsfield to make the preliminary final where it eventually went down to Narre Warren. Now entering her third year at the helm, coach Wilson said the club had exceeded its expectations in 2017. “Last year we really wanted to make finals after finishing sixth the year before and we went a lot further than anyone would have anticipated,” Wilson said. “Obviously if we’re going to improve that would mean making the grand final but if that doesn’t happen we’re going to have a lot of fun along the way. We take a lot of confidence out of how we finished last year, and we’ve addressed a couple of areas that needed working on.” The Eagles identified that they needed more height with their goalers and recruited Kasey Teakle from Inverloch, a tall, very strong and agile performer who will cause opposition defenders some headaches. Tegan Robertson is a talented and quick midcourter who has made her way up from B Grade, while Tayla Stahl – the twin sister of goaler Tegan – will hit the courts again after a lengthy break. While still not settled on her final squad for the year, Wilson is extremely positive about some improvement for the season ahead. “I think we’ll be very competitive again, we’re a very tight-knit group which is something that has developed over a couple of seasons,” she said. “I think Tahlia Coates, who is still eligible for the 17s, has grown significantly and will have a big year and players like Alanah Hardy are just so versatile and a dream to coach. “Our team has a really close bond now so that’s something I don’t have to concentrate on anymore.” Wilson said she was looking forward to the big clash against the Doves, who impressed her in a tournament two weeks ago. “I really like what Doveton is doing as a club, they’re bringing their young stars up and you have to respect that,” she said. “To me it looked like their average age was about 18 or 19 so it’s going to be a really tough challenge.” The Eagles will have a dominant backcourt, with multiple league best and fairest winner Tara Cecil joined by Hardy, while Natalie Sparks and skipper Steph Ryan are proven performers through the midcourt.
Ryan will be looking forward to the start of a fresh season after missing two months of netball with a broken ankle last year. The Eagles are also experimenting with technology, using a computer program to take statistical data from its matches. “Yes, it’s a new way of looking at things and we’re just moving with the times,” Wilson explained. Doveton has some of the most exciting young talent tin the competition with Hayley Stewart and Melissa Webster playing full A Grade seasons last year, while Chelsea Imanisani is sure to benefit from her nine games at the elite level. The Seeto sisters, Aggie, Atelina and Lesila will also be important, while coach Liz Edwards is sure to have an impact with her experience. This will be a close one to start the season but expect the Eagles to get home by five goals in a close one.
Hayley Stewart - Doveton’s Hayley Stewart is one of the most exciting young talents in SEFNL.
Steph Ryan - Cranbourne captain Steph Ryan is looking for a full year on the court after an injury interrupted 2017.

A coaching Clinnick in AFL South East They are entrusted with helping footballers reach their full potential – but just who is helping the 30 senior football coaches in AFL South East to reach an elite level of their own? The answer – the coaches are helping themselves. Roughly two years ago, well -respected former Devon Meadows coach Brent Clinnick put a pitch to AFLSE Football Development Manager Cam Roberts aimed at introducing a program to support the coaches. Clinnick understood perfectly the stresses involved at club land and convinced AFLSE to implement his plan. Now in his second year as the AFLSE Mentor and Coach Support Coordinator, Clinnick is thrilled to be backing up after a very rewarding first year in the role. “I think the program was enormously successful in its first year, creating a real bond and a support mechanism for all senior coaches in the region,” Clinnick said, before explaining the vulnerabilities that some coaches feel. “It’s a tough industry and a really tough job being a coach, the expectation is there that you know everything, but the reality is that coaches are learning on the run as well. “Not every club is great at supporting their senior coaches, and it might be as simple as just not understanding what the coach is going through. This program allows the coaches to lean on each other, maybe share a coffee and confide in each other to share their experiences.”
“In the past the pressure has built up and we’ve seen coaches with enormous potential simply walk away from the game. That’s not good enough from a support side of things – we want coaches still coaching and enjoying what they’re doing at the same time.” And despite their competitive edge, the coaches had been terrific at coming together as one. “One of the great things about the program is that egos are left on the hook and the coaches are providing each other with some fantastic feedback,” Clinnick said. “Last year we had a coach break through for a win after a long drought and he said he received more messages of support from the coaches around the leagues than he did from his own club. If that’s the sort of bond we’re creating, I think we’re pretty much on the right track.” And the success of the program is getting out, with AFL Goldfields getting in touch with Clinnick about the program, as has former Melbourne star and Doveton coach from last year Aaron Davey, who is now plying his trade in Northern Queensland. The program was targeted mainly at senior coaches in 2017 but will reach out as it continues to grow.
Clinnick coordinated coaching workshops in 2017, where senior coaches from all clubs in the MPNFL and SEFNL were invited to participate. “In some respect we’re breaking down the walls and providing an opportunity for coaches to express what they think is important in their role,” Clinnick said. “Simon Goosey (Mornington coach), Leigh McQuillen (Beaconsfield), Paddy Swayn (Pines), they’ve all presented at workshops, and the general message is that it’s ok not to know everything.
Mornington coach Simon Goosey has played a key role in the AFL South East Coaching Support Program.

So what does 2018 have in store? The beginning of a new season is always full of nervous energy and anticipation and 2018 in the South East Football Netball League will be no exception.
“We’ve got better and better as the years have gone on and I think that’s helped me with my game, just because of the girls around me,” she said.
Three clubs will begin the season with new coaches, with Kelly Whitecross talking over from Simon O’Shanassy at Beaconsfield, Richard Hammond filling the big shoes of Greg and Jade Heinrich at Narre Warren, while Robynn Pym has been engaged to lift Berwick back into finals contention.
“We haven’t played finals since 2012 so to go as far as we did was just amazing. Win or lose on that day we were just happy to be where we were.”
And goalers will be breathing a big sigh of relief too, with some of the best defenders in the competition on the move. Narre Warren stars Tracey Dell and Kara Hargrave will now be coached by Megan Dell – the sister of Tracey – at Seaford in the MPNFL, while Hampton Park gun Karli Foster has also headed south to bolster a strong looking Dromana outfit. But the best proven defender in SEFNL is staying put. Cranbourne’s Tara Cecil won a remarkable third league best and fairest award in 2017 with a three-vote victory over another past winner in Narre Warren’s Erin Clark. During her acceptance speech Cecil said the overall improvement of Cranbourne – who made it through to the preliminary final – had certainly helped her individual performance.
Shona Wells played her 300th game and was named Volunteer of the Year in 2017. Reigning premier Tooradin-Dalmore also had a presentation night to remember with Kelly Andrews winning Coach of the Year honours and club stalwart Shona Wells the prestigious Volunteer of the Year Award. Wells also received her 300-game Service Award, joining Officer football star Ben Tivendale on that elite pedestal last year. Just who will make their mark in 2018? Cranbourne’s Tara Cecil, left, celebrates her third league best and fairest award with runner up Erin Clark.

A Message from AFLSE RGM John Anderson An AFL South East Commission Review into its staff and management structure has resulted in the position of ‘AFLSE - South East Leagues Manager’ being made redundant. Regrettably, the review of roles has resulted in the incumbent in the position, Liz Triffitt, leaving the organisation. I would like to thank Liz for the valuable contribution she has made to AFLSE during her three-year tenure with the Commission. In particular Liz has played a key role in the formation and success of the South Eastern Women’s Football competition, and her leadership of the South East Football Netball League (SEFNL) is also highly regarded. Liz has been respected across all the leagues she has managed and I wish her well in the next stage of her professional career. Because of the review, and the position being made redundant, some structural changes to AFLSE will be implemented. All SEFNL enquiries will now be directed through AFLSE Senior Football Operations Manager Haydn Parsons and Netball Operations Manager Samantha Downie.

Downie has the pride and the passion If Samantha Downie can bring just half of the passion and commitment she has already given to netball to her new role with AFL South East – then the sport in this region is in very good hands.
Leadership would appear to run deep in the Downie bloodlines with Sam’s brother Michael captaining the Keysborough Football Club seniors in 2017 - and he was recently renamed skipper for this year.
Downie, or ‘Sam’ as most will get to know her, started her new role as the region’s Netball Operations Manager in late January, overseeing the running of the sport in both the MPNFL and South East Football Netball League.
Sam, who has stopped playing netball due to wear and tear on her knees, is looking forward to getting her hands dirty in her new role.
Downie will work alongside Haydn Parsons, the AFL South East Football Operations Manager, who adds the SEFNL clubs to his 2017 portfolio with the MPNFL. Downie’s history in the sport started at a very young age. “I started in Netta’s (now NetSetGo) when I was eight and I’ve been playing ever since, I just love the sport,” she said, before explaining her particular love for one end of the court.
“I can’t wait to get in amongst it, to find out what makes the clubs tick and to provide some really positive guidance and support to all clubs in the region. Samantha Downie Netball Operations Manager - AFL South East Phone: (03) 5995 0555 Email: netball@aflse.com.au
“I played my junior netball with Keysborough and started as a defender and never played in any another position ever since. “I moved across to Dingley to play with friends which gave me the opportunity to play representative netball with Springvale and District (SDNA) in the 15s and 17s. I played in the Dandenong Regionals team in the 17s and represented the region at the state titles.” The new Ops Manager, who has a Diploma in Sport and Recreation and several years of experience in Sales, Account Management and Marketing, has continued her involvement in the seniors, including six years as president of Keysborough and a leadership role with Melbourne Waverley. “I kept playing as a senior but took on additional opportunities to team manage and coach at SDNA and Melbourne Waverley,” the Western Bulldogs supporter said. “I was captain and coach at Melbourne Waverley and was awarded life membership in 2014, which is something I am very proud of. I had a couple of years away from Melbourne Waverley but went back in 2017 to coach the Open-1 team.”
Samantha Downie brings a wealth of experience to her new role as AFL South East Netball Operations Manager.
