PROUD PARTNERS OF
AFL South East By John Anderson On behalf of AFL South East I would like to welcome you all to one of the biggest and busiest weekend’s on the regional calendar. This is the only weekend where all six leagues under the AFLSE banner – FDJFL, MPNFL Div 1 and 2, SEFNL, SEJ and SEWF – participate in finals at the same time, with some finishing, some continuing, and some beginning their finals campaigns. What a huge week it has been for junior football across the region, with awards nights held for both the FDJFL and SEJ on Wednesday and Thursday night respectively, culminating with a huge day of grand final action this Sunday. It’s staggering to think that 40 grand finals will be played at six venues, with the FDJFL hosting 18 games at Lloyd Park and Frankston Park, while the SEJ will conduct 22 games at Casey Fields, Clyde, Endeavour Hills and Pakenham. Congratulations to all clubs that have made it through to grand final day, and to the host clubs mentioned earlier – thank you for dedication to junior football. Finals begin for both MPNFL Division One and SEFNL this weekend, while MPNFL Division Two and SEWF back up for week two after wild weather tested the resilience of everyone involved in both football and netball last weekend. Wild winds, hail storms, and freezing cold conditions made life tough for everyone, but we survive and move on to a much better looking forecast this weekend. Despite the poor conditions, some grand final positions have already been locked away. Congratulations to Crib Point for making it through to the MPNFL Division Two A Grade Grand Final, and to Karingal for a great effort to qualify teams in B, C and D Grade. Pearcedale will also play a part on grand final day with its 17-under team having a big win over Hastings last week. In SEWF, Eastern Devils, Bass Coast and Hastings have two weeks to prepare for the biggest game of the season after making it through in divisions one, two and three respectively. This weekend is so exciting – with so many great games scheduled across the region. In SEFNL, arch rivals and winners of the last three premierships, Berwick and Cranbourne play in the qualifying final, while Officer plays its first final in 14 years when it takes on Beaconsfield in the elimination final at Berwick. In MPNFL Div.2 , Dromana and Red Hill play for a grand final berth while long-time rivals Karingal and Langwarrin will meet for the first time ever in a finals series. That’s quite remarkable when you consider the two clubs have competed in the same competition for 34 of the last 49 years! And what a blockbuster weekend we have in store in MPNFL Division One.
Two powerhouse clubs, Edi-Asp and Frankston YCW, will fight for survival in the elimination final while the qualifying final between Mt Eliza and Pines should be a great contest. The Redlegs have been consistently near the top of the ladder all season while Pines snuck into the top three in round 18 for the first time this season. Throw in netball contests between four great teams in EdiAsp, Sorrento, Seaford and Rosebud, and we have a great weekend of competition in store. I ask everyone who attends this finals series, the coaches, officials, players and spectators, to keep one thing at the forefront of their mind while at the finals. Respect the game - this is sport - this is fun! The expectation is that the game is treated in a respectful manner both inside and outside the fence. Players should always play by the rules and support and encourage their teammates. To the umpires who have been selected to officiate in these big games, congratulations on your appointments and we wish you well. Football and netball are two difficult games to officiate. Split-second decisions are made and we implore the sporting community as a whole to respect the umpire’s decision at all times. To our major partners, thank you for your ongoing support across all six of our leagues. Your support makes the competition what it is today. Please take a close look at the Partners spread across our hard copy and digital records, and websites, and please support them as they have supported our great games. We are also excited to be working closely with GameFace during this year’s finals series, bringing a greater user experience to our regular printed record. Game reviews and previews, club notes and welcome messages will all be available on video, complementing our hard-copy editions. Download the GameFace App, or go to www.aflserecord. com.au to see digital content for the FDJFL, SEJ and SEWF finals series. John Anderson Region General Manager AFL South East

AFL Vic Country AFL VICTORIA EXTENDS TAC PARTNERSHIP CEO Steven Reaper wants Regional Commissions such as AFL South East to play an important role in reducing deaths and injuries on our roads after AFL Victoria announced the extension of its 27-year partnership with the Transport Accident Commission (TAC). The announcement will ensure the TAC’s Towards Zero message continues to be promoted to the wider Victorian football community. The partnership extension will utilise the reach of the broader grass roots football community to engage clubs through road safety education and training programs, and spectators with a TAC presence and activities at games across the state. The extension of the AFL Victoria partnership means that the TAC will no longer be affiliated with the under-18 talent pathway. Reaper said the extended partnership enabled even greater avenues for the TAC to deliver their important messages to communities right across the state. “Via this new partnership we will work with the TAC, our commissions, leagues and local clubs to help prevent deaths and serious injuries on our roads,” Reaper said. “Footy clubs are at the heart of every Victorian community, with road safety education and awareness to now be taken to more than 170,000 participants and 78,000 volunteers involved in 1100 clubs across Victoria.
In 2017 safety barriers were hit more than 1,700 times. Each time a safety barrier is hit, people are saved from potential life changing injuries or death. As part of the Towards Zero plan, safety barriers are being installed on Victoria’s most high risk regional roads because they reduce the chances of head-on and run off road crashes by 85%. These roads are deemed high risk because of the combination of higher travel speeds, road conditions and longer journeys. It’s simple. The more safety barriers, the more lives that can be saved. TAC CEO Joe Calafiore said local football clubs were the hub of their communities and an ideal partner to help work Towards Zero – Victoria’s plan to reduce the number of lives lost and serious injuries on our roads. “We’re rapt to be taking road safety to local football and netball clubs, which have such a big community presence, particularly in regional areas which remain tragically overrepresented in the number of deaths on Victorian roads,” Mr Calafiore said. “Teaming up with AFL Victoria will play an important role in encouraging people to practice safe driving and appreciate that everyone has a role to play in making our roads safe.”
“We have had a fantastic relationship with the TAC through our U18 talent programs, and they have played a major role in supporting and educating players in the competition since its inception. “The next phase is to create even more opportunities for everyone involved in football clubs, whether you are a player, coach, volunteer or supporter, to play a role in supporting Towards Zero.” The TAC is playing an important role in trying to reduce the number of accidents in regional Victoria through the installation of safety barriers.

Drawn Finals
Football No finals in the SEFNL will be replayed. In the case of a draw, extra time will be played. If scores are level at the completion of the fourth quarter the field umpires shall direct the goal umpires to confirm the correct score. • Coaches are not permitted to address their players between the end of the fourth quarter and the start of extra time, nor between any periods of extra time. • Once scores are confirmed the ball shall be returned to the centre of the ground and the game will continue for two five-minute halves (with time on). • Each team shall kick in the same direction as they did in the fourth quarter for the first half of extra time. Teams will change ends for the second half of extra time. • If scores remain level after two five-minute periods, a further two five-minute periods (with time on) will be played with clubs changing ends after the first five-minute period. • This process will continue until there is a result. Netball In the event of a draw in a final, at the end of the game when scores are tied there is a two (2) minute break during which time there may be substitution and/or team changes. • At the end of the two (2) minute break, there shall be a further 2 x 5 minute halves played for A and B Grade, 2 x 4 minute halves for C, D and 17 Under and 2 x 3 minute halves for 13 and 15 Under. The Centre Pass is taken by the team entitled to the next Centre Pass. • There is a 1 minute interval at half time and teams change ends. • During both of these intervals substitutions and team changes can be made. • In the event of a draw remaining at the end of extra time, play shall continue until one team has a two (2) goal advantage. No substitutions or team changes are allowed.

Footy Preview Tipsters
Now things get a little serious By David Nagel The two best teams in the recent history of the SEFNL will look to take a significant step towards further success when Berwick and Cranbourne collide in Saturday’s qualifying final at Beaconsfield. This battle has been brewing for two months after Narre Warren ran away with this year’s minor premiership. Both these teams have done what they’ve had to do, win against weaker opposition and position themselves for a top-three finish and a double chance. But now – well it gets a hell of a lot more serious! This is crunch time, with two of the three premiership fancies set to hold nothing back as they look to get the upper hand over a great rival. The Wickers and Eagles have played off for the biggest prize in footy for the last three years, the Wickers victorious in 2015 and ’17, while Cranbourne broke a heart-breaking run of four consecutive losses with a famous victory over the Wickers in 2016. Berwick has a core group of players that have rolled with the highs and lows of this footy club over the years, with skipper Madi Andrews, Andrew Morozoff, Tim Gunn, Tom Brennan and Luke Sheppard all bleeding navy blue and white. The addition over the last few years of class acts like Ash Smith, James Magner, Travis Tuck and Bryce Rutherford has allowed that loyal cast to finally taste success. As for Cranbourne, well it has to be the most resilient football club going around. They also have that core group that has built from the ground up with superstar full-forward Marc Holt joined by Ryan Davey, Troy Tharle, Stu Morrish and the Osborne brothers – Brandon and Glenn – in a tough and hardy group of footballers. Berwick will think they have Cranbourne for class – but you can never ever write the Eagles off! Sunday’s elimination final at Berwick will see the Officer Senior Football Club step out for its first finals appearance in 14 years when it takes on Beaconsfield. Ben Tivendale, a 300-gamer, has stayed loyal and strong to the Kangaroos while key forward Matty Clarke, along with Brad Thompson and Matt Rogers, is another performer who has stuck to this club like glue. The Kangas will need to be on their game, because Beacy arrive in good nick! Last week’s win over Cranbourne will deliver some real belief to Leigh McQuillen and his group, with Tylah Stokoe, Jake Bowd and an emerging star in Riley Verbi set to hit the ground running today. Beacy will fancy its chances of cashing in early against the Kangas…but expect Doug Koop to have a plan in place to make life difficult for the Eagles. To view the full preview of both finals, including comments from coaches, download the GameFace App or go to www.aflserecord.com.au and follow the prompts.

Netball Preview Can the Eagles cash in?
They both finished on 28 points for the season, Cranbourne with a percentage of 94.64 – the Doves 94.14.
By David Nagel Beaconsfield has built some serious momentum this year and will look to cash in on that most precious of commodities when the Eagles meet Narre Warren in the qualifying final at Holm Park Reserve on Saturday. The Eagles have lost just two games for the season – in rounds four and five against Tooradin and ROC – and bring an impressive 11-game winning streak to the table as they look to conquer the Magpies. The Eagles have won by eight and six against the Magpies in their two meetings this season. The Eagles have some real class through the midcourt with Kaela Hughes, Ash Gill, Zoe Mason and Rylee Nelson combining well and playing some very exciting netball. Bianca Sanzaro and Dani Cameron are strong and reliable bookends at either end of the court, while Tanya Mijovic, Dani Fedel and Abbie Sheers have all played their part in the Eagles’ magnificent finish to the season. First-year coach Kelly Whitecross was confident in the preseason that her team would grow together as a unit – and it’s a prophecy that has certainly come true. Narre Warren has had a massive year of transition, with Greg and Jade Heinrich handing over the reins to Richard Hammond and Sharon Phillips. On court the club stocks took a huge hit with Kara Hargrave, Tayla Shannon, Tracey Dell, Gabby Dwyer, Bec Potalej, Leigh Taylor and Corrina Emery – all significant contributors in 2017 – all no longer in the team. Those sorts of departures would leave most clubs reeling! But the Magpies, under the brilliant leadership of Erin Clark, have stood tall and been counted. Players like Brit Tyers, Caitlin Stephens, Carly Stagg, Jemma Osborne, Britt Mashado, Caitlin Egan and Kealeigh Brown have filled the shoes of the departures, while Chloe Phillips has been a rock-solid performer in goals. It’s a real credit to Narre Warren as a club that they’ve been able to keep their standards so high. Can they knock off the Eagles and book a place in next week’s second semi-final against Tooradin? They can, but they won’t – the Eagles will win by four. Cranbourne and Doveton started their seasons on Good Friday, and for one of these clubs it will all come to an end after Sunday’s elimination final at Edwin Flack Reserve. Doveton won that first-up encounter against the Eagles, and both have been on a very similar path ever since. The stats would suggest that this one is almost impossible to predict. Cranbourne has scored 653 goals for the season, Doveton 643, while the Eagles have conceded 690, and the Doves 683.
I told you…it’s as hard as any game could be to predict. Cranbourne has had 10 players play a double-figure amount of games this year with Tegan Stahl and Nat Sparks their most regular contributors, while Tahlia Coates, Kasey Teakle, Kayla Wilson, Allie Oakenfull and superstar defender Tara Cecil have all had big roles to play as the season rolled on. Cranny played off in the preliminary final last year so will fully expect to get the job done against the Doves. Doveton has relied on the explosiveness of Hayley Stewart through the midcourt, and the quality of players like Emily Pupuke, Liz Edwards, Chelsea Imanisani and Dani Devlin to help it to this stage of the season. They can defeat the Eagles – they’ve already proven that this year – but Cranbourne’s our tip to progress to next week’s first semi-final at Pakenham. It’s the Eagles to win in extra time.
Narre Warren captain Erin Clark had the ball on a string against Berwick last week and will look to do it all again against Beaconsfield.
