Great rivals set to lock horns Queen’s Birthday Round Saturday 9th June 2018

Cranbourne v Doveton

AFL South East SEJ off and running at Junior Championships A huge crowd flocked to Beaconsfield’s Holm Park Reserve on Wednesday night to watch some fine young talent strut its stuff on night one of the SEDA 2018 AFL South East Regional Junior Championships. The most promising young talent from the Frankston Districts, Mornington Peninsula, South East and Yarra Ranges Junior Football Leagues took part in games in under 13 to 17s for boys and under 15 and 18s for girls. A total of 22 teams will play 24 matches over three days, with Frankston Park and Shepley Oval in Dandenong to take over the reins from Beaconsfield for the last two days of competition on Saturday 9 and Monday 11 June. The Queen’s Birthday carnival, an important stepping stone in the Dandenong Stingrays Pathway, has grown in significance over the years and is now aligned with both the Melbourne and St Kilda Football Club’s Next Generation Academies (NGA). The SEJ were well represented on the evening, with the first taste of success coming in a keenly contested Under-13s contest against the FDJFL. Coached by Seb Gargana, the SEJ fought off a late challenge from the FDJFL to take a perfect record into its next clash against AFL Yarra Ranges at Frankston Park at 10am on Monday. Gargana was thrilled with his team’s performance after the match. “Well played boys, I hope you can see now what we’re trying to achieve and how that style of play can work in a game of football,” Gargana told his players in the changerooms. “It’s now very important that we prepare well for our next challenge. Get plenty of sleep boys, eat well, and we’ll see you bright and early on Monday. Your parents and everyone else in the room should be very proud of the way you played the game tonight.” Jack Wilson, the son of former Doveton star Nathan ‘Nanga’ Wilson played a terrific game for the SEJ and caught up with his dad for a photo after the match.

AFL Vic Country State honours for local stars Kananook Bulls’ stars Sean Martin and Joel Nicol and St Francis Xavier tyros Kelvin Walters and Shaun Doll will represent the south east region with pride at this month’s AFL National Inclusion Carnival to be held in Tasmania from June 18 to 23. Martin, Nicol and Doll will represent Vic Metro, while Walters will pull on the Vic Country jumper with pride after AFL Victoria announced its squads for this year’s championships. Two squads of 16 of Victoria’s best footballers with an intellectual disability, including five emergencies across both squads, have been chosen to don the Big-V jumper as they prepare to take on the top talent from across the country. Ten players will return to the Metro squad from last year’s premiership side, while six new players along with four emergencies from the WISE Employment Metropolitan Conference- Victorian FIDA Football League (VFFL) will pull on representative colours for the first time. The Metro squad features representatives from ten different WISE Employment Metropolitan Conference VFFL clubs, with Williamstown Seagulls (five), Ferntree Gully Eagles (three) and Sandown Cobras (three) boasting the most representatives. Williamstown Seagulls coach Rob Klemm will once again lead the Metro squad as Head Coach for the fourth consecutive year after leading his team to a 53-point victory over NSW/ACT in last year’s Grand Final. Fellow state team Vic Country will welcome seven new players to its representative squad, with 10 players returning to the side after finishing third in 2017. All 11 regional clubs within the VFFL are represented, with eight players from the CVGT Australia Northern Conference selected, while a further eight players hail from the Western Conference. Selection to the Vic Country squad comes following the first representative practice match between the two country VFFL conferences, which saw over 30 regional

players showcase their skills at Bendigo’s Weeroona Oval. Leading the Country squad for the first time is GV Stars coach Steve Reeves. With experience coaching senior interleague with the Kyabram District Football League and Dookie Utd, Reeves will take over from Matt Deegan after two years at the helm. Held annually, the AFL National Inclusion Carnival provides an opportunity for footballers with an intellectual disability to represent their state in a week-long competition. All states and territories will have a team represented in the competition, with squads from Queensland, Tasmania, South Australia, NSW/ACT, Northern Territory and Western Australia joining Vic Metro and Vic Country. The 2018 National Inclusion Carnival will take place in Launceston, Tasmania from June 18-23.

Footy Preview Can the Doves young guns take it to the Eagles? By David Nagel Doveton will look to pull off the upset of the year when the Doves make the trip to Casey Fields to take on a red-hot Cranbourne this afternoon. Still winless after seven rounds, the Doves have been competitive against Pakenham (6 points in round 2) and Officer (23 points in round 6) - but have had that interspersed some terrible hidings along the way. But when you at their list closely it is totally understandable as to why. They are so young it is not funny! The Doves’ core group this year gives a clear indication of what they’re dealing with, with experienced types like Russ Gabriel (29 years old) and Matt Jameson (23) playing all seven games this year, the same as Brad O’Brien (17), Beau Anthony and Jake Basa (18), with Dylan Bowman and Sam Muirhead (20) joining that exclusive seven-game club. Throw in Will Smith (18), Alex Mastromanno and Shannon Brennan (19) – who have all played six games – and it becomes pretty apparent what the Doves are trying to build. Zac Gardener, Riley Tyler, Tyson Bellinger, Tom Agar, Mitch Cotter and Josh Bradley are all still teenagers and have all had a taste of senior experience this year. Cotter has been outstanding for the Doves this season, earning senior interleague selection in a clear sign that his elite talents are being noticed by some pretty influential figures far and wide. Gach Nyuon and Gabriel form one of the most potent ruck combinations in the league but the Doves just don’t have the strength through the midfield to match it with the elite teams in the competition at this point in time. This will be another huge test of character for the youngsters from Doveton, because Cranbourne has started to hit its straps in a big way.

Mitch Cotter is one of the outstanding young talents in SEFNL this year.

8

At 195cm, Cranbourne’s Shaun Marusic offers a tough match-up for the Doveton midfield. The mercurial Marc Holt kicked five goals against Officer last week to take his career tally to 977 goals, while Ryan Jones kicked three to continue a purple-patch of form. Jones has been an exquisitely-talented footballer for the best part of a decade, but at 27 is in the prime of his career and is having a huge impact by spending more time in the midfield. Jones’ dash played a key role in the Eagles remarkable come-from-behind victory over Berwick a fortnight back – and look for him to have an influence against the Doves. And the Eagles are still rock-solid in defence with Brandon and Glenn Osborne, Stu Morrish, Jordy Bertrand, Dillan Bass and Brandon Wapshott forming a very tight and consistent unit. Which ever way you fold it, bend it, stretch it, play with it or look at it until you go cross-eyed – it’s the Eagles to win comfortably. ROUND 7 RECAP It would be remiss not to look back on one of the great home-and-away games played in SEFNL history last weekend with Narre Warren keeping its unbeaten run in tact with a nine-point victory over Berwick at Kalora Park. This was an absolute cracker from the start, with early goals to Bryce Rutherford and Trent Shinners setting the scene for the highest-quality to-and-fro contest for the season. Berwick had the better of the early exchanges with Madi Andrews, Nick Hillard and Tom Brennan giving the Magpies midfield plenty to think about. Jo West, Riley Heddles and Michael Riseley were keeping the dangerous Magpie forwards under wraps, while Trent Thomas was proving elusive in the front half. The Wickers led by three-straight kicks at the first exchange, the margin narrowed to 16 points at the main break after the Magpies answered with three goals to two in the second term.

www.aflsoutheast.com.au

Footy Preview The Magpies rallied strongly in the third, with Brad Scalzo and Michael Collins doing plenty of damage around the stoppages and Nick and Stewie Scanlon kicking vitals goals at crunch times to drag the Maggies back into the match. The Magpies led by a solitary point at three-quarter time… setting up an epic last stanza of footy. The Magpies struck first, and struck hard, with Stewie Scanlon dribbling through a snap over his left shoulder before Shinners clunked a great grab, and converted from long range, to give the Magpies a clear advantage. Brennan answered for the Wickers at the 12-minute mark before Nick Scanlon drilled home a customary bomb from the 50-metre mark to edge the margin out to two goals. Harry Money then kicked his third, at the 23-minute mark, to set up a thrilling finale. The Wickers had their chances, with Money, Dylan Morris, Ash Smith and Travis Tuck all narrowly missing shots on goal, before Stewie Scanlon iced the cake with a clinical finish and joyous celebration at the 30-minute mark of the term. For the Magpies and Scanlon’s - Stewie finished with four, and Nick three – while Col McNamara and Ryan Quirk were equally as effective at the defensive end of the ground. In other games, Beaconsfield rolled Doveton by 76 points, Cranbourne steamrolled Officer by 75 points at Starling Road while Pakenham continued its improved form with a 33-point victory over Tooradin-Dalmore. Skipper Chris Cardona was on fire for the Lions with five goals, while Steve O’Bryan, Jimmy Harrison and Steve Morey joined their skipper on the best players’ list.

Footy Notes Cranbourne This a huge weekend for the club with a big clash against a great rival in Doveton followed by our $5,000 draw on Sunday. We walked away from Officer with three strong wins last week with the Under 19s starting the day off in style with an 88-point win. Mitch Tharle continued his good form and had a few mates follow his lead with Paul Delaroche and Tom Wright playing well and Jake Cowburn and Hayden Murphy kicking seven goals between them up forward. The lads were really consistent, kicking no less than four goals in each quarter of footy – a real four-quarter performance you might say. The twos were dominant all day, with Clay McCartney showing his class with four goals in a best-on-ground display and Jay Mills, Adam Coe and Shaun Keenan all contributing to a monster 137-point win. Bailey Buntine, Jordy Donadel and Adrian Russo gave Clay some great support with three goals each for the day. The ones made sure there was no hangover from the huge win over Berwick the week before, kicking six goals to one in the first quarter to give our old coach Koopy some headaches. Chris Ramac starred in just his third game of senior footy, while Shaun Marusic and Yos did well, as did the Train who kicked five goals.

Az Bower and Kirk Dickson were also impressive in a 75-point win. Call Bec Sparks (Netball) 0400 874 081 or Jan Davies (Football) 0407 882 274 for tickets to the $5K draw.

Doveton We’ve had some great trips to Cranbourne over the years and have some wonderful memories of some terrific battles on the old Racecourse footy ground. Today we head to Casey Fields for another tough contest against one of our arch rivals from over the journey. The boys battled hard against Beaconsfield last week, we were only 13 points down at half time, before an edge in experience and some stronger bodies saw Beacy run away with the prize. Gach was magnificent all day, kicking three goals and matching it in the ruck while Beau Anthony, Malis Lokeron and Tyson Bellinger showed the club has a very strong future. The twos were outplayed by a pretty slick unit with Rodders, Darce and Tyson Hoy sticking to their guns and showing great character despite the scoreboard not being so kind. Let’s give it a really strong Doveton effort today and give the Eagles a run for their money.

Coaches rewarded for a great month of May Coaches play such an important role in the development of junior and senior footballers right across the AFL South East Region and four mentors have been recognised for their outstanding contributions to the craft. Narre Warren senior coach Matt Shinners, SEWF Interleague coach Megan Snart, Lindsay Boribon form the Noble Park Under-10’s Blue and Narre South Lions Auskick coach Matthew De Wilt are the Casey/Cardinia zone Coach of the Month Award winners for the month of May. Shinners, a two-time premiership coach with Narre Warren in 2008 and 2010, has returned to the senior role after several years of working at the development level of the club. His returned has sparked a rejuvenation at Kalora Park with the Magpies sitting two games clear at the top of the South East Football Netball League ladder. The return of former premiership players Trent Shinners and Brad Scalzo has played an important part in the Magpies’ transformation, but the coaching know-how of Matt Shinners has been the number-one reason for their dominant form to date. Megan Snart was already a well-respected coach long before she took on the job of moulding the first-ever South Eastern Women’s Football (SEWF) interleague team into a winning combination. Snart coached the Eastern Devils to Division-1 premiership glory last year, but the challenge of dissecting a list of 60 of the best players in SEWF was a unique challenge of all of its own. Snart thrived under the spotlight, leading the SEWF girls to a thrilling one-point extra-time victory over Northern at Preston City Oval on May 19.

AFLSE FDM Stuart Clark said Lindsay Boribon’s selection was just reward for his thorough approach to coaching Noble Park team in the South East Juniors. “Lindsay is an organised coach who communicates very well with his players on match day and spends time working one on one with all players to develop their skills at training,” Clark said, before also praising Matthew De Wilt for his passion and dedication to the recently restructured Auskick program. “Matthew is doing an amazing job teaching the new Auskick 2.0 content and has all his coaches and parent helpers on board and following his direction.” All four coaches will now go into the running for the Coach of the Year Award, to be presented at the relevant presentation night at the end of this season. Coach of the Month Awards – May 2018 SEFNL Matt Shinners (Narre Warren) SEWF Megan Snart (Eastern Devils) SEJ Lindsay Boribon (Noble Park) Auskick Matthew De Wilt (Narre South Lions)

Matt Shinners and Megan Snart have been recognised for their outstanding coaching achievements in the month of May.

BERWICK

Netball Preview Eagles and Doves set for a tough battle By David Nagel Cranbourne and Doveton could well be fighting for a finals berth this year making today’s contest at Casey Fields one of the most important for both clubs this season. Donna Wilson and her Eagles started the season off in second gear, losing their first four games, before cranking things up either side of the interleague weekend. Wins over Pakenham, Berwick and ROC were probably to be expected, but today’s clash has a much more even feel about it. Are the Eagles the real deal or not? Wilson and her girls will need to turn around a Good Friday loss to the Doves that started that early-season form slump that became very hard to remove themselves from. The 27-36 loss to the Doves was followed by further losses to Narre Warren (38-42), Beaconsfield (31-39) and Tooradin (33-54) before the sleeping-giant gave the eyes a rub and got mobile. Last week’s win over ROC was born from two impressive quarters of netball – the first and the third – where the Eagles outscored the Kangaroos by 27 goals to 11. The best defensive unit in the business, Tara Cecil (GK) and Alanah Hardy (GD), gave nothing away at their end of the court while Steph Ryan (C), Nat Sparks (WA) and Kayla Wilson (WD) applied some serious pressure through the midcourt. And Tegan Stahl (GS) and Tahlia Coates (GA) did what they do best, shooting netballs like arrows through the ring. But can the Eagles now back it up against the Doves and take away their number-four ranking in the competition? The Doves have been pretty good of late, pushing Beaconsfield and Narre Warren in close losses, either side of a strong win over ROC. The Doves gave Beaconsfield a really big scare last week, trailing by just one at threequarter time before going down 42-48 in the end. The Doves were well served by Liz Edwards and a trio of Seeto girls – Akanisi, Leah and Lesila - at the defensive end of the court while Dani Devlin, Helen-Margaret Ashin and Natalie Jaman-Hogan provided plenty of options up forward. But this game against the Eagles will be decided through the midcourt where Hayley Stewart, Chelsea Imanisani and Holly Taubert will need to continue on from their solid form against the Magpies last week. This one just has the feel of a very close game coming up, with both teams desperate to score an important win against a comparable netball team.

It will be tight, but the Eagles will gain revenge for their round-one loss to the Doves with a four-goal victory. SEFNL will resume a full schedule of four games next week with Round 8 marking the end of the first half of the season. Berwick host ROC, Cranbourne will be at home again Beaconsfield, while Doveton host premiership fancies Tooradin-Dalmore and Pakenham make the trip to Kalora Park to take on Narre Warren.

Cranbourne and Doveton will resume a long-running rivalry at Casey Fields today.

Netball Notes Cranbourne

In beautiful Autumn sunshine, after a very foggy, cold start, ROC hosted us at their home courts for a great day of netball. UNDER 13 RED – Wow, what a game! We were even after the first quarter, trialled by 6 at half time, 7 down at the end of the 3rd quarter, this bunch of little superstars came out for the 4th quarter and absolutely played their hearts out to WIN by 7 goals! They played as a TEAM with all units – goalers, mid and defence working together with confidence and capitalised on turnovers that were created by the pressure the team applied to achieve this fantastic result. Final Score – Cranbourne 32 defeated ROC 25 Awards – Bethany & Natel UNDER 13 WHITE – With the lead changing at every break, this was always going to be a close game. With only a goal the difference at the end of the 2nd quarter and the 3rd quarter, the team tried their hardest, but ROC just managed to come away with the win in the end by 3 goals. Final Score – Cranbourne 19 defeated by ROC 22 Awards – Mikayla & Kiara UNDER 15 RED – What a heart stopper this match was! Goal for goal for the whole match, teamwork got our girls over the line in the end to win by a goal! Final Score – Cranbourne 36 defeated ROC 35 Awards – Mac Fox & Tara UNDER 15 WHITE – What a game, goal for goal in the first quarter, ROC overturned the lead in the 3rd quarter, but the whole team lifted in the last, playing amazing netball and staying positive to achieve a 3 goal win. Final Score – Cranbourne 24 defeated ROC 21 Awards – Adelle, Kapri & Emily UNDER 17 RED – Great team game with all girls willing to take on whatever position on the court they were given to play. This team have managed to come through the season so far undefeated, fantastic effort! C GRADE – Started the match off well with strong leads, backing each other up, and chasing down loose balls. Unfortunatley in the second quarter onwards ROC got the better of us, coming away with a 4 goal win. Final Score – Cranbourne 33 defeated by ROC 37 Awards – Jenna Bliss B GRADE – The nail biter of the day ending in a draw. The whole team played with confidence and a huge effort from the defenders brought us back into the game after being down by 8 at one point. A very cold start to the morning, but as the day progressed, the sun came out making it another perfect day for netball hosting another home game this week against Beaconsfield 13 Red: Playing in 2 degrees weather against girls twice their size our baby doves got off to a slow start. Basic errors to be working on but all our babies did amazingly well. They showed perseverance, good sportsmanship and played with their all until the very end, never giving up. Special shout out to Holly for her amazing leadership from beginning to end. 13 White: Yeah, we scored 2 goals! The improvement each week in this team is outstanding, all the players are wanting to learn, and they gave it their best each week. BOC: Maddy - she never gives up and displays great sportsmanship. 15 Red: Played a solid 4 quarters this week resulting in a good win. During the week we focused on our defence end and this showed on court today. The girls had big voices on the court and supported/encouraged each other, which was awesome to hear and see.

www.aflsoutheast.com.au

Netball Notes 15 White: This team is slowly finding their feet, started to gel as a team and are moving the ball better down the court. Our defensive pressure is strong, we need to convert our turnovers in the goal ring. BOC: Jess - she was given a job to do and did it well. U17 Red: Well Well Well… What a game – with the right attitude. Great enthusiasm and all playing as a team. We put 4 quarters together and come away with a real good win. Today might be the turning of a big run. Well done all 7 girls! 17 White: Oh well another draw, but this one was impressive. They took on the top team this week and were down by 4 goals at half time. After a serious chat, the girls came out and put up 7 goals before the opposition scored. Last quarter saw the lead change many times but to the girls credit they did not give up. Well done to this crazy bunch of girls! D Grade: Well Well Well… Got off to a flyer and never looked back. The girls with great voice and commitment to our task. We moved the ball well with EB leading from the front – best game of the year so far for her. Girls put on a very convincing win – well done!!!!

C Grade: Neck and neck the whole game… The odds were against us at times, something which was out of our control, with we squandered it in the last quarter. Execution let us down. Big positive was our attitudes towards each other – improved immensely from the week prior. B Grade: Team started flat, we were working with a new defensive team that hasn’t been paired before…. We had some good ball possession but at time we weren’t protecting that enough. We showed that we can fight back however not enough… Need to put a better effort on the court from the start this weekend against Cranbourne and not play catch up netball. A Grade: Well Well Well… With 4 girls out – some new girls in. We got off to a good start but with 5 mins of poor choices, poor ball use and our intensity dropping we let Beacy back in. A good game from both sides. Pleasing that we never gave up but to compete at the top level we must play 4 strong quarters. Well done to our young guns HM and DD who kept competing all day!

The Dandenong Southern Stingrays staved off an undermanned Sandringham Dragons outfit to emerge victors by 68 points on a brisk Sunday morning at Shepley Oval Dandenong. Boasting six changes due to Vic Country selection, the Stingrays’ impressive squad led for the entire day before blowing the game apart in the last quarter to win 15.15.106 to 5.4.34. AFL Victoria TAC Cup veterans Angus Paterson, Riley Bowman, Jai Taylor, Jamie Plumridge and Matthew Gahan all led from the front, collecting plenty of disposals and having a widespread impact. Equally impressive were the efforts of Matthew Cottrell and Ned Cahill who both finished the day with three goals. Down back, Matthew Cumming, Lachlan Stenning and Matthew Gahan were pillars of defence, standing firm against a worthy forward line, whilst Lachlan Stenning ran straight and hard all day. “The game really could have gone either way in the end with so many changes, but we were fortunate enough to get across the line due to the work rate across the board,” said Stingrays’ coach Craig Black. “The focus the boys are brining each week, no matter who plays, is very impressive. The group is pushing each other along and making sure no one is taking short cuts.” The first quarter was a little one-way traffic, but the skills were off due to the very slippery ball. Riley Bowman managed an early goal, quickly followed by two others through Reid Nanscawen and Cottrell before the Dragons were finally on the scoreboard. To close off the quarter Cahill split the big sticks, which allowed the Stingrays to come into the huddle with a 20-point lead. The second quarter saw the home side flex its muscle with six more goals to take a 46-point lead to the main break. Goals came through six individual goal kickers with Bowman, Cahill and Cottrell all managing their second for the day. More impressively though was the hard work of the mids, while the defenders did well to limit the Dragons to two measly points. The third started a little differently with Sandringham managing to kick two goals in a row. The young Rays seemed slow to react to the change of pace. The Dragons started to look dangerous but couldn’t reap the rewards. Dandenong needed their leaders to stand up in the face of the Dragons momentum – and the likes of Campbell Hustwaite, Jake Frawley, Plumridge, Bowman and Taylor, along with the Cumming twins did just that. Frawley was menacing in the middle, Gahan and Cumming were marking everything in sight, whilst Paterson, Bowman and Stephen Cumming bullied their opponents on the repeat inside fifty entries which came through Lachlan McDonnell, Cottrell and Plumridge.

30

The Stingrays added two more goals, but allowed the Dragons to wrestle momentum and grow a little in confidence. Patterson marked strongly on the siren and kicked truly giving the Stingrays a comfortable lead of 56 points at the end of the third term. The last quarter saw the Stingrays continue to add scoreboard pressure, finishing off with four more goals, but disappointingly allowed a couple of late goals to the Dragons through a lack of discipline. The win puts the Stingrays in good stead, securing top spot once again on the TAC Cup ladder, whilst enjoying the weeks rest due to the TAC Cup bye. In two weeks- time Dandenong return to Shepley Oval to take on the Oakleigh Chargers who are the only TAC Cup team to inflict a loss on the impressive Stingrays unit. TAC CUP RESULTS Dandenong Stingrays 4.3 8.7 11.11 15.16.106 Sandringham Dragons 1.1 1.3 3.3 5.4.34 Stingrays Goals: Matthew Cottrell 3, Ned Cahill 3, Riley Bowman 2, Jamie Plumridge, Angus Patterson, Campbell Hustwaite, Bailey Angwin, Lachlan Williams, Jafar Ocaa, Reid Nanscawen.
