PROUD PARTNERS OF
AFL South East Last weekend provided one clear message to all involved in football and netball across the entire AFL South East Region. And that is - Community Sport is very much alive and well. All six leagues in AFL South East - FDJFL, MPNFL Div 1 and 2, SEFNL, SEJ and SEWF - competed in finals last weekend, with large crowds, eager participants, and a band of hardworking volunteers creating a wonderful atmosphere across all 12 venues. Take for example Saturday at Hastings. Senior football finals were played on one ground, women’s football on the other, and netball finals as well. It was a real family atmosphere with everyone enjoying themselves. That vibrancy and excitement will no doubt be transferred to Holm Park Reserve in Beaconsfield this Saturday when grand finals are played across three divisions of South Eastern Women’s Football (SEWF), complementing a great day of second semi-final action in the SEFNL. Junior grand finals were also run successfully last week, with games played at Langwarrin, Pakenham, Barry Simon Reserve and Clyde. We were also very fortunate to showcase the best junior boys and girls talent at premium venues such as Casey Fields and Frankston Park, both of which were in very good condition. This week, as the show rolls on, we get our first glimpse of senior grand final action. As mentioned earlier, the SEWF competition comes to an exciting conclusion and I would like to pass on my best wishes to Bass Coast, Eastern Devils, Hastings, Pearcedale, Seaford and Tyabb for their respective contests on Saturday. Likewise we hand out premiership cups in netball in MPNFL Division Two, with Crib Point and Karingal set for a great showdown in the A Grade competition. Crib Point has won the last two grand finals, Karingal has lost the last three, so we can expect a great contest at Somerville at 1.45pm on Saturday. To Crib Point, Dromana, Hastings, Karingal, Pearcedale and Somerville – good luck for your endeavours on the netball courts today. Awards Nights also continue this week with a joint presentation to be held at the Mornington Racecourse for the MPNFL and SEWF competitions on Monday September 3. The SEFNL Awards Night will be held at the Cranbourne Turf Club on Monday September 10. I ask everyone who attends this finals series, the coaches, officials, players and spectators, to keep one thing at the forefront of their mind while at the finals. Respect the game - this is sport - this is fun! The expectation is that the game is treated in a respectful manner both inside and outside the fence. Players should always play by the rules and support and encourage their teammates.
To the umpires who have been selected to officiate in these big games, congratulations on your appointments and we wish you well. Football and netball are two difficult games to officiate. Split-second decisions are made and we implore the sporting community as a whole to respect the umpire’s decision at all times. To our major partners, thank you for your ongoing support across all six of our leagues. Your support makes the competition what it is today. Please take a close look at the Partners spread across our hard copy and digital records, and websites, and please support them as they have supported our great games. We are also excited to be working closely with GameFace during this year’s finals series, bringing a greater user experience to our regular printed record. Game reviews and previews, club notes and welcome messages will all be available on video, complementing our hard-copy editions. Download the GameFace App, or go to www.aflserecord. com.au to see digital content for the FDJFL, SEJ and SEWF finals series. John Anderson Region General Manager AFL South East

AFL Vic Country The Herald Shield Heats Up The 2018 Herald Sun Shield school football competition is heating up, following a host of competitive Grand Final matches last month. Held annually, the Herald Sun Shield event sees the best Victorian senior and intermediate school footballers go head-to-head for the coveted title in venues across the state. In the Division 1 Senior Boys Grand Final, St. Bernard’s College Essendon were crowned champions after claiming a 31-point win over St. Patrick’s at the MCG.
In other results, Warrnambool’s Emmanuel College, Melbourne Grammar and Ivanhoe College were crowned champions in their respective intermediate Grand Finals following a triple-header at Ballarat’s MARS Stadium. Ivanhoe secured its first Herald Sun intermediate shield after a comprehensive win over Luther College in the Division 2 Intermediate Girls competition, Emmanuel College overcame a strong St. Francis Xavier outfit to sew up the Division 2 Boys silverware, while Melbourne Grammar got the job done over a spirited Parade College Division 1 Boys title.
In a rematch of the 2017 decider, it was St. Bernard’s who took control of the match from the outset, booting seven goals to one at the main break.
The Herald Sun Shield competition will continue this month, when the Division 2 Senior Boys Grand Final will be played on September 13 while the Division 2 Senior Girls decider will be held on September 19.
Despite St. Patrick’s efforts in the second half, inaccuracy in front of goal plagued the boys from Ballarat, eventually going down 10.10 (70) to 5.9 (39).
For full results from the 2018 Herald Sun Shield, visit aflvic.com.au
The win sees St. Bernard’s claim back-to-back titles and its fourth shield overall since the competition was established in 1977. In the Division 1 Senior Girls decider, Hallam Secondary College has become one of the most successful schools in the competition after defeating reigning premiers Ballarat Grammar. Played at Geelong’s GMHBA Stadium, Hallam shot out of the blocks early, to establish a solid 22-point lead at half time. Despite a spirited second half from Ballarat Grammar, Hallam’s defensive pressure halted the attack to help them run home as premiers. The final score was 4.5 (29) to 2.3 (15).
Hallam Secondary College defeated reigning champions Ballarat Grammar in the Division One Senior Girls Herald Shield.
Having secured consecutive titles in the inaugural year of the competition in 2012 and 2013, Hallam’s win now sees them tie with Ballarat Grammar as the best school in the competition with three premierships apiece. In the Intermediate competitions, it was Geelong’s Sacred Heart College who secured their first title over Ballarat Grammar by eight points.

Drawn Finals
Football No finals in the SEFNL will be replayed. In the case of a draw, extra time will be played. If scores are level at the completion of the fourth quarter the field umpires shall direct the goal umpires to confirm the correct score. • Coaches are not permitted to address their players between the end of the fourth quarter and the start of extra time, nor between any periods of extra time. • Once scores are confirmed the ball shall be returned to the centre of the ground and the game will continue for two five-minute halves (with time on). • Each team shall kick in the same direction as they did in the fourth quarter for the first half of extra time. Teams will change ends for the second half of extra time. • If scores remain level after two five-minute periods, a further two five-minute periods (with time on) will be played with clubs changing ends after the first five-minute period. • This process will continue until there is a result. Netball In the event of a draw in a final, at the end of the game when scores are tied there is a two (2) minute break during which time there may be substitution and/or team changes. • At the end of the two (2) minute break, there shall be a further 2 x 5 minute halves played for A and B Grade, 2 x 4 minute halves for C, D and 17 Under and 2 x 3 minute halves for 13 and 15 Under. Footy Preview Tipsters
It’s time to ring the bell By David Nagel The two school-yard bullies of the South East Football Netball League finally meet their match on Saturday when Narre Warren and Berwick collide in a classic second semifinal battle at Holm Park Reserve. These teams have the reputation of being the biggest and best in the business – and have both had the upper hand at times this season – but now is the time when the battles really count. How does that old saying go…something about, “He who laughs last, laughs longest.” The Magpies certainly weren’t laughing, but had a slight grin, after consecutive victories over the Wickers in rounds two and seven. But those 19 and 10-point victories could be filed in the ‘not-relevant’ section of the school library after the Wickers triumphed by 36 points at their last meeting in the final round of the season. The Magpies with a 2-1 record to draw on, the Wickers with recent bragging rights – both teams will run out with their chests pumped out believing they are the team to beat. The Magpies have had a stunning season, catching most by surprise in becoming the number-one ranked team for the season. Berwick were undefeated and clearly the best heading in, but the balance struck by the Magpies has been superb. Veterans like Michael Collins and Col McNamara have played every game this year, with Brad Scalzo and Trent Shinners from the same vintage, while youngsters like Jesse Davies and Tom Miller have taken huge steps in their football development. And Berwick, well it seems to be peaking at the right time of year. The Wickers have obvious class, with Travis Tuck, Madi Andrews and Bryce Rutherford leading a powerful midfield, but it’s the depth provided by players like Bailey Asher, Tom Brennan, Will Arthurson and Matt Young that gives a truer indication of why the Wickers will be difficult to topple. It should be an absolute beauty! Sunday’s first semi-final at Pakenham between Cranbourne and Beaconsfield is harder to read than Chinese arithmetic. Cranbourne is highly rated but has won just one of its last four games, while Beacy is coming off a four-game winning streak. Beacy holds a two-one record over Cranny this year and struck most recently with a 14-point victory in round 16. This one is important for Cranbourne who failed to make the grand final last year for the first time since 2010. Failing to make this year’s prelim would be another step in the wrong direction. Zak Roscoe, Shaun Marusic and Luke Bee-Hugo have been pillars for Cranny this year, while Riley Verbi and Brad and Matt Homfray have delivered similar consistency for Beacy. Seriously – toss a coin on this one! To view the full preview of both finals, including tips and comments from coaches, download the GameFace App or go to www.aflserecord.com.au and follow the prompts.

Netball Preview The big guns get ready to fire By David Nagel The two best performed teams of 2018 are set for an epic showdown when Tooradin-Dalmore and Beaconsfield lock horns in the second semi-final at Holm Park Reserve. There’s a massive prize on offer, with a grand final berth at stake, in a contest that will see some high-quality performers leaving nothing left in the tank. That’s the thing about finals – at the end of the day there are absolutely no excuses as the best teams pit their skills and mental belief against the other. The score stands at one-all this year with the Seagulls defeating the Eagles by three goals at Tooradin in round four before Kelly Whitecross and her girls returned serve with an 11-goal victory at this same venue in round 15. That was Tooradin’s only loss for the season. The Eagles will come in full of confidence after a strong victory, 50-42, over Narre Warren last week. Scores were locked at quarter time before the Eagles surged in the second and third quarters, scoring 30 to 17 to take total control of the contest. Abbie Sheers and Dani Cameron gave nothing away in defence and their battle with the dangerous Tooradin goalers will go a long way to deciding the first team through to the grand final. Kaela Hughes, Ash Gill and Zoe Mason were terrific through the midcourt last week, while Bianca Sanzaro and Tanya Mijovic made the most of every opportunity. Mijovic ignited the Eagles in the second term, before handing over to Dani Fedel who played a key role in the second half. And for the Seagulls – well this is what they’ve been waiting for! The opportunity to win back-to-back titles is just two glorious victories away, with Kelly Andrews sure to have her troops primed for the ultimate effort against the Eagles. Players like Ebony Dolan and Alex Duff are enjoying this run of success, with Jess Cox, Alex Maher, Bec Kinna, Emma Iacovou, Sara Duncan and Jess Maher transforming the fortunes of the club in recent times. This one will go down to the wire, both teams are too good for that not to happen…and it’s the Seagulls to book the first ticket to grand final day with a two-goal victory. Narre Warren is fully aware that only its very best netball will do when the Magpies take on Cranbourne in Sunday’s first semi-final at Pakenham. These teams have played three times this year with the Magpies winning by four goals in round one before the Eagles rediscovered some magic to fight out a thrilling draw in round nine. The Magpies made a huge statement in round 14 however, thrashing the Eagles 64-33 to take clear favouritism into this week’s contest.
The Magpies were good early against Beaconsfield last week. Jemma Osborne had the hot hand in attack as the Magpies went goal-for-goal with the highly-rated Eagles in the first term. Caitlin Egan and Caitlin Stephens had the Eagles’ goalers under wraps, while Carly Stagg, Erin Clark and Britt Mashado – who took on Kaela Hughes – were terrific performers through the midcourt. Chloe Phillips was doing a great job of feeding Osborne, but the Magpies were soon outplayed through the middle stages of the match. They require a four-quarter effort against Cranbourne today. Coach Donna Wilson would have been thrilled with Cranny’s 45-21 victory over Doveton in last week’s elimination final, a game that looked difficult to pick heading in. Tegan Stahl and Nat Sparks continued their fine form this season, while Tahlia Coates, Kasey Teakle, Kayla Wilson and Allie Oakenfull have all played key roles in taking the Eagles this far. The Magpies defeated Cranbourne by 17 goals in last year’s preliminary final, and while the margin won’t be that great – they will again. It’s the Magpies to win by eight.
Narre Warren goaler Jemma Osborne takes a shot over Beacy defender Abbie Sheers last week. Both will play huge roles for their teams in semi-final action this weekend.

South East Juniors Noble Park wins a thriller
Noble Park has won the 2018 SEJ Under-12 Blue premiership after a stirring last-quarter battle against Pakenham at Barry Simon Reserve. Pakenham, the favourites heading in, led at the last change before the Bulls produced their best football of the match to run out narrow winners. Noble Park’s Zain Sleiman was adjudged best on ground by the umpires, while Pakenham’s Mason Hall played a standout game for the Lions. Noble Park coach Sam Lengyel said the game lived up to expectations after a great battle between the sides throughout the season. “It’s been a great contest between the two sides this year, we defeated them twice throughout the season and they gave us a football lesson in the first final,” Lengyel said. “We always thought we were a chance but if Pakenham played the way they did in the first final it was going to be a tough ask to win. They’re a great side Pakenham and I’m sure they’ll be back here again.” Lengyel, who coached a flag six years ago in the under 16s, was coaxed back into coaching by Collingwood star Adam Treloar, a close friend of the family. “He’s good friends with my son and I coached him under 12s, so we’ve been close and he’s like a family member to us,” Lengyel said. “He wanted to coach junior football and needed a hand, so I was happy to help out given all his commitments to playing football with Collingwood. The kids look up to him and respect every word and listen to everything he says. “He’s a Noble Park junior himself so the players can relate to him and he’s as excited as anyone today. He played a big part in the success of this side and deserves a lot of credit for the way he has approached things with the kids.” Lengyel wanted to thank his support staff for their huge involvement this year, and said he was proud of his side for showing the determination to come back in the final term.” “Absolutely, I’m so proud of the boys, and girl. They’ve worked so hard for this and deserve everything that has come their way. I look forward to being a part of it all again next year.”
The Eagles ramp things up
Beaconsfield Blue was the first big winner on SEJ Grand Final Day 2018 after a hard-fought victory over Berwick Blue in the Under-11 Red decider. Beaconsfield had a nice break on the Wickers heading into the last term and two quick goals to start the final quarter put the issue beyond doubt. Beaconsfield coach Mark Craig was thrilled with his team’s performance. “Words can’t explain it to be honest, I’m just so proud of the boys and what they’ve achieved,“ Craig said. ”We started all the way back in February and ramped things up heading into finals and it’s all paid off today. We bonded well and became a really strong team and that’s why we got this outcome.” Craig praised Berwick for being such wonderful competition, and then heaped praise on his own club as a whole. “I just want to thank the everyone at the club, everyone involved in making it a special place for these kids to play footy,” he said. “To my team manager, the runner, all the parents, and especially the players, I can’t thank them enough for their efforts.” And the biggest key to the premiership success? “We bonded together and we became brothers, we’ve become family and that made a big difference today I think.” Beaconsfield’s Zander Pereira was awarded the best on ground medal for an outstanding performance through the midfield.
