Sunday, September 3 Seniors - Narre Warren v Beaconsfield Reserves - Doveton v Beaconsfield Under 19A - Cranbourne A v Berwick Under 19B - Narre Warren B v Cranbourne B

Welcome to week 2 of the 2017 BMG SEFNL Finals Series.

Final. Doveton will now face Beaconsfield who on Sunday beat Cranbourne, the 2016 Premiers.

Firstly, a big thank you to our host clubs in Week 1, Beaconsfield and Berwick, and for their fabulous volunteers who gave of their time.

We welcome Berwick Seniors to the Finals as they take on Cranbourne, the 2016 Premiers, in Semi Final 2. Whilst on Sunday Narre Warren will face Beaconsfield in Semi Final 1.

Thank you to the volunteers at Pakenham on Saturday and again at Berwick on Sunday. This week we introduce the U19s to the finals series, so there will be four football and 10 netball matches being played. In the U19As we see a repeat of the Round 19 match up between Beaconsfield and Narre Warren A. These teams have been awesome competitors this season and it’s fabulous to see the talent that is coming through the U19s who will be playing Senior games in 2018. Whilst in the U19B Semi Final 2 the matchup is Pakenham and Officer, which is sure to be a great contest. Narre Warren Reserves enter the Finals this week and take on Berwick who were a stronger side than the Doveton Reserves in the Qualifying

To ensure that everyone has a safe and enjoyable time, there will be members of the Victoria Police around the ground today, as well as increased presence of private security guards. Cars and bags will be searched to ensure that alcohol is not brought into the ground. Wet areas will be enforced in the Preliminary and Grand Finals. Booze buses will be operating outside the venues. For the enjoyment of all, anyone displaying unsocial behaviour towards players, officials, umpires or other spectators, may be asked to leave. We wish all teams the best of luck for this week’s finals matches.

Herald sun shield heats up The 2017 Herald Sun Shield school football competition is heating up, following a host of competitive Grand Final matches this month. Expanding the senior student program to include two male and female intermediate competitions this season, the annual Herald Sun Shield event has seen the best Victorian secondary school footballers go head to head in venues across the state for the coveted title. In the Division 1 Senior Boys Grand Final, St Bernard’s College Essendon broke through to win their third Herald Sun Shield title after defeating St Patrick’s College Ballarat by 16 points at Simonds Stadium. In wet and windy conditions, there was only one point in it at three-quarter time in a low-scoring affair before two final-quarter goals from St Bernard’s captain and Calder Cannons player Jake Riccardi put the game beyond doubt. The final score was 6.9 (45) to 4.5 (29). The win secured a third Herald Sun Shield for St Bernard’s, and their first triumph in the Grand Final since 2003 to also go alongside their 1991 victory.

Proud sponsor of country footy for over a decade.

It was a different story for Ballarat in the Division 1 Senior Girls Grand Final, with Ballarat Grammar securing back-to-back titles after a solid 23-point win over Melbourne Girls Grammar at the MCG. Played as a curtain-raiser to the Round 19 AFL clash between Adelaide and Collingwood, Ballarat jumped out of the blocks early to establish a 15-point lead at the main break.

Despite a spirited third term from Melbourne Girls Grammar, Ballarat’s defensive pressure halted the attack to help them run home as premiers. The final score was 4.8 (32) to 1.3 (9). The win sees Ballarat Grammar become the most successful Division 1 Senior Girls team in the history of the competition, taking its Herald Sun Shield tally to three premierships – ahead of Hallam College on two. In the Division 2 Senior competitions, Hallam Secondary College claimed the Senior Girls flag after defeating Loyola College by 73 points at RAMS Arena, while the Senior Boys Grand Final will be held on September 14. In other results, four schools have etched their name in the history books after claiming the inaugural Herald Sun Shield Intermediate premierships. Played as a triple header at Victoria Park it was Ballarat’s Loreto College who took home the silverware in the Division 1 Girls Intermediate competition after a comprehensive win over Bentleigh. Padua College secured the inaugural Division 2 Intermediate Girls title with a solid victory over Mt Lilydale, Werribee’s MacKillop College got the job done over a spirited Kardinia outfit in the Division 2 Boys, while Xavier College claimed a close victory over St Joseph’s to win the Division 1 Boys flag. I Can Feel It In My Fingers… I feel it in my fingers…I feel it in my toes…oh…oh…oh yeah…Finals are all around us…And so the feeling grows And just like that the grass all of a sudden looks greener. The sun seems to have an added glow about it. And any sign of cloud coverage, let alone torrential rain, has disappeared in the blink of an eye. Somehow, someway it always happens like that. No matter how extreme the winter is everything comes together the minute that finals feeling rolls around.

You gave your promise to me, and I gave mine to you…I need someone beside me…in everything I do…oh yes I do But with that comes the beauty of the football itself. There’s nothing quite like finals footy. That thing you spend all year working so hard towards. And for some it’s not just the past year. Sometimes it’s the culmination of many years of hard slog at the lower end of the pecking order.

You know I love you…I always will…My mind’s made up by the way that I feel…There’s no beginning…There’ll be no end…cause on my love you can depend...

The Future Is Here… The future can look like many things depending on which way it’s assessed. The future can be nerving, exciting, undefined and downright scary all at the same time. That’s a serious emotional wave there. Regularly we consider the future to be exactly there…in the future. Something that we think about but never really consider approaching. Yet the future isn’t just where we think it to be. It’s actually here. Right here, right now. The next word of this article that you read is actually in the future from the word you’re reading now. All of a sudden those nerving, exciting, scary feelings that the future causes are on top of you. That’s right…the future is here…the future is now. And that’s exactly what presents the SUA and the whole footballing community on the Peninsula this weekend.

The young stars of the future will strut their stuff this weekend in an exciting finale of games down at Hastings on Sunday. This season has been an absolute blast in the juniors with many new and enthusiastic faces taking up the challenge of learning and developing their whistle blowing and decision making in MPJFL footy. And credit must go to their application as many have also made the step into the senior ranks. With the changing of the guard in the senior ranks the sniffs of opportunity were too hard to ignore. However, the enthusiasm surrounding the SUA junior program would not be possible with the unwavering commitment from second year Junior Coordinator Scott Gathercole and the Rye Football Club. Scott came in with experience in coaching Auskick down the Peninsula and his ability to get the best out of our young future stars has been evident. The relationship developed with the Rye Football Club has enabled the SUA to set up a junior base at Rye to further expand our demographic. And while we regularly get caught up in the competitive wave of footy it is always nice to step back and see the lighter more sentimental side. Season 2016 has seen 3 father-son combinations take the whistle and no doubt it won’t be long until young son is teaching dad a few little tricks to keep his aging body ticking along. So get down to Hastings this Sunday and catch a glimpse of the next wave of whistle blowing stars and Scotty and his team close the curtains and celebrate a wonderful 2017 junior season.

Round 11 - Cranbourne 6.4.40 lost to Berwick 12.16.88

Game Analysis 1st Quarter - Luke Cody had Narre Warren in front within the first minute of the final. The contest was tight as the old rivals were feeling each other out. Michael Thompson kicked Cranbourne’s first to draw level at the 11-minute mark. Tom Miller used his explosive pace to full advantage kicking The Magpies to a seven point lead. Narre gained all the early momentum as The Eagles were struggling to get themselves into the contest due to costly turnovers. Aaron Wilson was having an impact as a target inside forward 50 for Narre. Wilson kicked truly before Miller broke free to kick his second and extend their lead to 16 points at the first change.

Game Analysis 1st Quarter - Both teams were met with heavy conditions due to heavy rainfall overnight. Beacy were first to settle in with the conditions, Riley Verbi broke free and kicked a great goal on the run to give The Eagles an early lead. Doveton had plenty of possession early but failed to capitalise three early misses in front of goal became costly as The Doves were behind. Michael Henry kicked a clever goal in traffic to give Doveton their first lead of the match. It was short lived as Beaconsfield were efficient when they got the Ball forward as Troy Aust snapped a nice goal on the run to give The Eagles a four point lead at quarter time.

2nd Quarter - The second quarter was a lot more even, with some great individual contests across the ground. Ryan Jones hit the scoreboard early for the reigning premiers reducing the margin to only 10 points. With Nick Scanlan well held by Brandon Osborne it was Wilson providing Narre with the best avenue to score. Wilson kicked his second extending their lead back to 16 points at the 10 minute mark. After spending the early part of the game further up the ground Zak Roscoe found himself closer to goal, his first for the match reduced the margin to 10 points. Both teams exchanged goals, Wilson kicking two late goals to give Narre back the ascendancy close to halftime before Cranbourne’s Captain Courageous Marc Holt kicked his first and breathed fire back into the contest as Narre held a six-point at the main change.

2nd Quarter - Verbi started the second quarter with a nice goal to extend The Eagles lead to 10 points. Inaccurate kicking became really costly for Doveton. Seven scoring shots resulting in only 1.6 but Josh Bradley kicked truly from nice play in the midfield to reduce the margin to two points. The second term saw both teams struggle to gain control as there was a lot stoppages and scrappy play making it hard for anyone to get into the contest. Rus Gabriel was dominating the ruck but it was resulting in Doveton getting the clearances as the young Eagles midfield work hard in and close around the footy. Troy McDermott used his footy nous to get in front to take his first mark which resulted in a goal and gave Beaconsfield a seven point lead at the half.

3rd Quarter - Narre were a shadow of themselves after halftime as Cranbourne gained the momentum by winning crucial contests around the footy. The tide had definitely turned, Narre appeared slower as Cranbourne had more numbers at every contest. When Roscoe kicked his second early in the third to bring the scores level, Narre were well and truly on the back foot. The Eagles dictated terms for most of the third quarter but couldn’t breakaway on the scoreboard. Luke Bee-Hugo kicked one straight it gave The Eagles the lead for the first time in the contest. The Magpies scored a solidarity behind for the quarter and when Roscoe kicked a classy goal the Eagles extended their lead out to 12 points at the final change.

3rd Quarter - Doveton were fancied to turn the tables on Beaconsfield but they weren’t ready to fire and after two goals to McDermott and another to Verbi the Doves were trailing by 25 points. Beaconsfield’s efforts after halftime with three unanswered goals put Doveton right behind the eight ball. Aaron Davey was injured and unable to take his spot on the field in the second half. The young Beacy brigade were all over Doveton as they became frustrated as nothing seemed to go right for The Doves. Doveton managed to kick a behind but also lost Cam Williamson to a hip injury reducing them to only 2 rotations on the bench. Beacy could have had the match sown up but kicked 1.4 to finish off the term with Lachie Modica kicking his first as The Eagles lead by a gamehigh 35 points with a quarter to go.

4th Quarter - Cranbourne’s match winners were starting to take over. The Eagles defence stuck to their tasks gallantry Osborne had great support from Jordan Bertrand, Brandon Wapshott and Dillon Bass. Narre Warren become wasteful with their possession and the turnovers were killing their momentum. Shaun Marusic was everywhere throughout the midfield for The Eagles. It appeared The Magpies were running out of steam. Gun small forward Jones’ second had Cranbourne out to their biggest lead of 18 points early in the last quarter there was ominous signs for Narre. Holt broke free and snapped the sealer breaking the hearts of The Magpies in the process. Jones kicked his second for the quarter, his third for the match as The Eagles ran out 30-point victors.

4th Quarter - With the result beyond doubt and the conditions starting to tire players from both sides it became a matter of how much Beacy would win by and the fact that Doveton lost their third consecutive elimination final. Beacy missed a few gettable chances early in the quarter as the margin drifted towards 40 points, before club stalwart Ryan Hendy put in a cameo performance booting three last quarter goals to add some respectability to the score line. Hendy reduced the margin back to under 20 points before goals to Modica on the run and McDermott kicked a late goal to take his personal tally to four goals in the Eagles impressive 30 point win.

momentum for another three weeks, but they have to realise this is finals and unbeaten runs can be evaporated quickly if they don’t come to play and set the tone early. Berwick look to have improved under first year Coach Stewart Kemperman, The Wickers faithful hope it’s enough to secure their direct path into the Grand Final at Holm Park Reserve. Key Match-Ups Bryce Rutherford (Berwick) v Shaun Marusic (Cranbourne) - Both Rutherford and Marusic have played football at higher levels and they bring their experience in big games. Rutherford and Marusic are the modern day midfield prototype big bodies who can run all day. Rutherford has had a great season and when he gets enough of the footy Berwick generally win. Marusic himself can be a match winner on his day, his versatility helps The Eagles when they need him most. Whichever player has the biggest impact will assist their side towards a win but they may not line-up as direct opponents but will spend time in the middle together.

Recent Finals 2016 1st Semi Final Narre Warren 7.11.53 lost to Beaconsfield 10.6.66

Harry Money (Berwick) v Jordan Bertrand (Cranbourne) - It took until the end of the season before Berwick’s electric small forward Harry Money returned to the senior line-up. Money is your traditional small forward, quick and dangerous who can read the play well around goals. Bertrand continues to develop and find himself amongst a talented back six for the Eagles. Bertrand strongest suit is his ability to turn defence into attack and will run hard both ways. If Bertrand can curtail Money’s influence it will restrict one of Berwick’s avenues to goal. Luke Sheppard (Berwick) v Ryan Jones (Cranbourne) Shepard is often used to try and eliminate Jones impact on the contest. Jones is a silky skilled mover who can be used as a link man on the wing or as a dangerous small forward with speed being his major tool which makes Sheppard the best man for the job. These two combatants have met many times on the big stage and will know each other’s game very well. Jones has been averaging two goals a game this season and will be a player Berwick will have to put a lot of time into to secure the win. Result - There has been two teams perched on top of the SEFNL nest, Berwick and Cranbourne. They meet again in the Second Semi-Final for the third consecutive year a match Cranbourne has won twice gifting them direct passage into the grand final. Berwick bring in an undefeated record into this year’s final series with Cranbourne carrying the under-dog tag but did well to shake that with a sterling second half last week against Narre restricting them to only three scoring shots. The fierce rivals have played twice during the year with Berwick winning comprehensively on both occasions. What can The Eagles do to turn the tables on the rampaging The Wickers? Both teams are so evenly matched built on a strong back six, they both derive their play from the half-back flank. Cranbourne’s seasoned stars rose to occasion in the Qualifying Final and have turned their focus to spoiling Berwick’s apple cart on the big stage. You can expect a huge crowd in attendance creating an awesome atmosphere for both teams. Berwick have been faultless during Season 2017 and will be looking to carry that

SEFNL | FOOTBALL

2015 1st Semi Final - Narre Warren 21.6.132 def Beaconsfield 10.4.64 Key Match - Ups Josh Tonna (Narre Warren) v Kyle O’Sullivan (Beaconsfield) – Young Eagle O’Sullivan was given the tough task of nullifying the dangerous Nick Battle last week and did a fantastic job over the four quarters. O’Sullivan will be the most likely tagger used to try and stop the running man Josh Tonna. Tonna has taken his game to new levels in the second half of the season and is a player that must be stopped if Beaconsfield are to get the win. Tonna is gifted with speed and dynamic foot skills which sees him control a lot of Narre’s midfield play. O’Sullivan will have his work cut out trying to stop Tonna if given the task this weekend. Dylan Quirk (Narre Warren) v Cory Walker (Beaconsfield) – Quirk has found himself in a new position playing as a defensive small forward rotating when required in the middle. Quirk has redefined himself and is no longer required to be the midfield general, Quirk can use his leadership forward of the footy. Walker has been one of the best recruits of the season and has the great ability of playing tall and small depending on opponent. Walker has plenty of speed and reads the play well and can be used to stop Quirk if required, Walker will use his closing speed to stop Quirk while being a third person up in marking situations when required to try and stop Wilson and Scanlan Jace Kelly (Narre Warren) v Troy McDermott (Beaconsfield) – McDermott confirmed himself as one of the best forwards in the competition booting four goals in the elimination final and taking his season tally to 50 goals. Jace Kelly looks best suited to tackle McDermott as Kelly is safe in the air and also at ground level and should have enough strength to handle McDermott one-on-one. It’s been proven throughout the year if you can stop McDermott it will go a long way towards your side securing the win. Result - Beaconsfield caused the biggest upset of the 2016 Finals Series when they defeated Narre Warren by 13 points in the first semi-final. First year Coach Leigh McQuillian will be hoping for a similar result here after a stirring win against Doveton last week. Narre can’t go into their shells after their first loss in nearly two months of football, although outplayed last week their season isn’t over and Coach Heath Black will be trying to get that message across to his boys, that if they go back to doing what they do best they should be able to handle Beaconsfield like they did back in Round 13. These teams have a rich finals history and it will be a close contest but Narre’s bigger bodies should have them in good stead and head through to the preliminary final in a weeks’ time. Some mixed results for us last week as our Reserves bowed out of the finals race while our seniors and Under 19B’s had terrific wins. With the reserves the game on Sunday against Beaconsfield at Berwick was undoubtedly a reflection of their season in that we just couldn’t get it over the line when it mattered. While we were in this one early, even though we kept Beacy to a low score, we struggled to score ourselves and it was only a late goal in the game that gave us any scoreboard satisfaction. What has been pleasing for this team however is the performance of some of the younger guys that stepped up and more than played their part. We dropped a fair bit of experience from years gone by so while this loss is disappointing, we have so much to look forward to in the future. Best for us were Harks, Jake, Koey, Chode, Robbie and Jake Cowburn.

for three posters. We seemed to take more control of the game as it went on and our second half of footy was premiership material to say the least. We were ruthless with our attack on the ball and player and still, with some guys slightly down on form, others stood up and ensured we would play in our seventh consecutive second semi-final as we kept Narre goalless in the second half. Best for us were Yoz, Waters, Zak, Stuey, Kirk and Cheekers.

The U19’s had to unfortunately forfeit their last game of the season due to not enough numbers on the field. And unfortunately the way the two U19’s divisions are structured, we are the team whom misses out on finals for the season. We would like to send out a massive big thank you to our coach Nathan Wilson. Each and every single week he has giving everything to not only the boys, but to the club. Numbers have been our biggest hurdle this season but you still seeing him being so positive, never once has giving up and pulling off some amazing wins along the way. We thank you so much for your dedication this season and what you have done for the club Nanga!

Presentation Night will this year be held at Amberlee Receptions and will cost $55/head which will include a buffet meal and entertainment. We will have a DJ playing and drink cards are available for $40 either at the club or on the night. Please see Nat for further details.

The reserves faced Berwick in the qualifying final last Saturday and played their worst game of the season but were still somehow in the contest. The backline was brilliant with Andy Henwood and Mitch Woolgar playing well. The beauty of our hard work all year means we have a 2nd chance this week. This weekend we play Beaconsfield at Berwick on Sunday! Let’s get behind the boys in their second round of finals.

Our 19Bs played Saturday morning at Officer and played their best game of the year. From the start we looked ready to play and with the inclusion of a couple of the A’s due to numbers, the guys lead from the start until the end. The best part was even when Officer put a few goals on to challenge us, we responded as good teams should. So our last two games have bee wins over first and second so we are now looking forward to the game on Sunday morning against Narre B for a spot in the Preliminary Final. Best in our eight point win were Keeno, Johno Lucas, Hodgey, BOT, Aba and Jack Benham.

Our seniors faced Beaconsfield last Sunday in the first elimination final. Unfortunately it was not a dove’s day. With a dull crowd at Berwick, windy and cold conditions it felt more of a home and away game, rather than a final! Big Russ once again dominated as he has across the whole 2017 season. Matt Jamo attacked everything down back in another impressive performance. Ryan Hendy held his own really well in the forward line, kicking 3 for the day. Beaconsfield took the game from us early in the second half and seemed to adjust to the terrible ground conditions more than what we did. Again, riddled by injury we saw Beaconsfield take their first win off us for the season. Disappointing results for us but we should be super proud of the way we have conducted ourselves across the home and away season.

In many eyes, our seniors were underdogs in the game against Narre. But those views were from purely outside the club as we know exactly what we are made of and Saturday’s brilliant 30-point win against an in form opposition is exactly the level of performance we have trained ourselves for. Off to a slow start, our guys stayed in the game and probably could’ve been a couple of goals up at half time except

This weekend the reserves take on Beaconsfield in another elimination final and 5 of our netball teams are still in the race as well. 2 of which are playing for a grand final spot this Saturday down at Pakenham! Get behind them all, cheer loud and do our club proud! Go Doves #doveylowve

Seniors – Narre’s Ones jumped out of the blocks in the Qualifying Final, with some good delivery to the forward line feeding Aaron Wilson to four goals and opening up an early lead. But after quarter time Cranny took control of the midfield, and their defence got on top, quelling our momentum. Positional changes at the main break had little effect as Cranbourne restricted Narre to just three points in the second half. Collo, Quirky and Josh Tonna worked hard and Jordy Flannery did a great job at full back – but we had too few winners on the day. Our solid finish to the 2017 season affords us a second crack in the finals, and Beaconsfield can expect a more purposeful showing of Narre football this week. Reserves – Our Twos had the benefit of the week’s break, courtesy of our undefeated season and top-of-the-ladder finish. The depth and experience of our playing list will continue to serve us well over the next three weeks. Skipper Mitch Cowan is well-

supported by experienced campaigners like Corie Intveen, Daniel Borninkhof and the Collins brothers. Just keep doing what you’re doing boys…. It’s working. Under 19A –In a full dress-rehearsal for this week’s final, Narre’s Under 19 A played Beacy last Saturday in a 1 v 2 battle of defensive but high-quality footy. Great games by Jake Stuart, Peter Gentile, Hayden Johnson and Leigh Tannahill weren’t enough to get us over the line in an 8-point loss. The beauty of the unusual ‘dress-rehearsal scenario’ is that the team that learns most from last week’s close game might just hold the cards this weekend. Under 19B – After a sensational season together, our 19Bs will enter their semi-final challenge with a good recent record against opponent Cranbourne B. Expect strong leadership from consistent performers like Brandon Hogan, Matt Jerram, Kyle Contencin, Jason Luppino and Adam Machnikowski to help us win our way into the big dance.

Welcome to week 2 of the 2017 BMG SEFNL Finals Series. Firstly, a big thank you to our host clubs in Week 1, Beaconsfield and Berwick, and for their fabulous volunteers who gave of their time. Thank you to the volunteers at Pakenham on Saturday and again at Berwick on Sunday. This week we introduce the U19s to the finals series, so there will be four football and 10 netball matches being played. This week we welcome teams Narre Warren – A, C, D, 17UR Grades, Beaconsfield – B, 17UW, 13UW Grades, ROC – 15UR, 15UW, 13UR Grades to the fold as they all play for Grand Final places. Congratulations to all sides that had a win last weekend, commiserations to the ones that the curtain has closed on season 2017,

we look forward to hopefully seeing you back in finals next year and going that one step further.

QUALIFYING FINAL

ELIMINATION FINAL

TOORADIN-DALMORE 50 DEF BEACONSFIELD 33

DOVETON 32 LOST TO CRANBOURNE 46

Beaconsfield got off on the right foot establishing an early lead and maintaining that during the first half as both teams battled for the ascendancy. The Eagles midcourt was on top early with the likes of Briana Pratt and Ash Gill winning their positions ensuring enough supply was given to their attackers. Leading 22-20 at the main change the contest was up for grabs in the second half. Tooradin kicked into gear in the second half and started to win the ball through the middle. Sara Duncan and Emma Iacovou on the wings had plenty of the ball and used it well to supply Jess Cox and Alex Maher plenty of opportunities to score in the shooters circle. The Seagulls were terrific in the third quarter which saw a seven-goal turnaround with Tooradin taking a five-goal lead into the final quarter. Tooradin seemed to be getting their confidence back and a return to form which saw them dominate the SEFNL for the first two months of the season. Beaconsfield had no answers with a few key personnel unavailable The Seagulls really turned it on staking their claims as a genuine premiership contender. Tooradin out shot Beaconsfield 17 goals to five in an incredible final quarter display which should provide the girls plenty of confidence going into their big 2nd Semi-Final contest against Narre Warren for a chance at premiership glory.

2ND SEMI - FINAL NARRE WARREN V TOORADIN-DALMORE 2017 Matches Round 4 - Tooradin 47 def Narre Warren 43

Doveton were without a few of the standout performers from during the year but still had a strong line-up to take on Cranbourne a team they defeated comprehensively in the final game of the season. The Eagles were inspired by the return of the their Captain Steph Ryan, missing due to injuries and Cranbourne came out and played committed netball from the get-go establishing an early five goal lead at the first break. Alanah Hardy was having a day out in attack, while the Eagles defence stood strong with Tara Cecil and Sharni Lambden stopping many foray forwards by The Doves. Doveton couldn’t close the gap and were still trailing by five-goals with the final quarter to play. In a sudden death final it was only 15 minutes left for one of the sides, depending on who wanted it more. The Eagles wings were dominating with Nat Sparks and Darcy O’Donnell combined so well restricting Doveton getting any momentum into their game, even when they moved Liz Edwards on to the wing to help get the ball moving forward into attack didn’t help. Shae Gee and Chelsea Imanisani battled hard in attack as replacements for Rahni Samason who was unavailable due to VPL commitments. The Eagles soared in the final term extending their lead to 14 on the back of a 14 to six goal final term which saw Cranbourne reach the second week of the finals, while the Doveton’s season came to a close after playing some inspired netball over the past month.

Round 18 - Narre Warren 51 def Tooradin 33 Only home court advantages separated both teams during the home and away season. Tooradin were the last team to defeat Narre Warren this season but that was four months ago and since then the reigning premiers have been sublime. It’s hard to see where the improvement could come from a team who has won 95% of the matches since 2015. Narre Warren under the guidance of a Jade and Greg Heinrich have taken their club to new levels and forcing the competition to improve as a whole. Tooradin has been one of those teams that has witnessed rapid development from within, going from a winless 2015 to now fighting for their spot in the grand final. The Seagulls started their season with all guns blazing going undefeated for their first eight matches putting the Netball competition on notice. Tooradin’s second half of the season wasn’t as strong but that can happen as the team struggled to maintain its continuity due to VPL commitments and injuries, at their best they challenged their fancied opposition. Narre’s core group of senior players complement each other’s skills precisely as they don’t appear to have a weakness on the court. Narre have great on-court leadership from Leigh Taylor who gets support from the likes of Erin Clark and Britt Mashado. The Magpies midfield brigade when on top provide plenty of support to their gun attack with lead by Gabby Dwyer and Tayla Shannon. Tooradin have their own bevy of quality of players on their side of the court with at least four or five girls pushing for team of the year honours. The Seagulls should be stock full of confidence after an impressive second half last week to topple Beaconsfield by 17 goals after trailing early on in the contest. These two teams squared off in the last game of the regular season but Narre were too strong and assumed premiership favouritism, but you get the feeling Tooradin’s best is still come. Shona Wells is an inspirational leader with the support of Ebony Dolan and the Alex’s Alex Maher and Alex Duff have shown they are capable of running with the best sides in the competition. You can expect a close contest with Narre sneaking home in a thriller. Narre by 3 goals.

1ST SEMI - FINAL BEACONSFIELD V CRANBOURNE 2017 Matches Round 7 - Cranbourne 34 lost to Beaconsfield 42 Round 17 - Beaconsfield 33 lost to Cranbourne 34 In an interesting turn of events both teams claimed the win on their opposition’s court. Not much separates both teams in the battle of the big birds as reflected in their Round 17 clash with Cranbourne sticking their noses out at the opportune time to secure the much needed four points and confidence going into finals. Beaconsfield can be a bit of an enigma where their best will put them right in amongst premiership contenders but then drop matches their expected to win which sees them as a chance to drop out of the finals in straight sets. Beacy are a proud netball club and at full strength are a powerhouse of the competition. Beacy Coach Simon O’Shannesy will be hoping his charges can bring their best and hold that form consistently for four quarters, taking last week for example they were leading until halftime before falling away conceding 30 second half goals going down to Tooradin. Cranbourne’s A-Grade haven’t played a lot of finals in recent times but it’s great for the competition to see the girls from Casey Fields starting to fulfil their potential they have shown over the last couple of years. Cranbourne were bolstered by return of their Captain Steph Ryan after missing over two months of netball leading into the finals due to injury. Both teams are built on the strong defences so it will come down to which midcourt can dominate and supply the most amount of scoring opportunities. Both teams had players sidelined back in Round 17 and both coaches will be hoping their respective side is close to full strength. This sudden death Final could come down to who wants it more during the final stages. It would be an upset if Cranbourne were able to beat Beacy but going over the past month Cranbourne have shown some real fighting spirit. Beacy by 2 goals.

BERWICK & KNOXFIELD

“ Totally Workwear presents the 2017 Grand Final MVP thanks to King Gee”

A Grade were left to rue a missed opportunity against Tooradin on Saturday. We put together a great first half of netball, working tirelessly, pressuring the opposition into turnovers and maintaining scoreboard pressure. Unfortunately we weren’t able to sustain the pressure for four quarters, and were overrun by a quality opponent. Still plenty of positives to take out of the game, just needing to put together a more consistent effort against Cranbourne on Sunday.

The Player voted “Best on Ground” for all 19s, Reserves and Seniors Grand Finals wins a pair of King Gee boots (Valued at $150)

C grade versed Cranbourne in the Qualifying Final and our game started with some nerves in the first quarter, but after our break we managed to settle and control the game with some great run through the midcourt, and finishing by our attackers. The final score was 37 v 18, but special mention goes out to our defenders for their game today!

For Totally Great Value contact us at sales@twwknox.com.au sales@twwberwick.com.au

Well done D grade girls on winning the Qualifying Final against Doveton. Our girls controlled the game from the start to the finish, even when Doveton challenged us, we kept level heads and continued to dictate the play. Our goalers movement was exceptional and our midcourt drives were strong giving the goalers lots of opportunities. Defence continued to get rebounds and win all those important intercepts. Great all round game. 17 Red - It was clearly evident from the first centre pass that every possession was going to be crucial. Unfortunately during the second half there were plenty of missed opportunities which lead to a 9 point loss. Looking forward to next weeks game against Cranbourne, it’s bound to be another awesome display of up and coming talent. 15 White versed Pakenham in the Qualifying Final and both teams were very wary of each other which gave us a tight first quarter. We managed to gain a lead in the second quarter with some hard running through the midcourt, and we continued this in the second half to end with a tight 25 v 18 win. Well done to both teams playing a quality final! 13 Red - The girls began the game on fire! It was great to see such strong intensity through the attack,

21

SEFNL | NETBALL

mid court and defence. With everyone contributing the scores were even by the end of the first quarter. Unfortunately the game was interrupted in the second quarter with a hail storm, which resulted with the girls losing their momentum and focus. Narre was able to capitalise on this which by the end of the third quarter we were 10 goals down. Well in true Beacy style there was no giving up! With our chins held high the girls crawled back one goal at a time to even the score in the last minutes of the game. With a minute to go Narre scored. We may have lost but it was a brilliant come back to witness. So proud of each and every one of you! Good luck to all Beacy teams participating in this weeks finals, on both Saturday & Sunday, and Happy Fathers Day to all our Dads!! We hope you all enjoy the day and we bring home lots of Beacy wins! #beacylove

berwick The force of the Berwick Netball Club juniors into this weeks round of Finals. With a mixed bag of results from last week, it is with great pride that we still see all 4 teams continue on into Week 2. 13 Whites knew they had a formidable opponent in ROC in Saturdays qualifying final, with the result being 1-1 from the home and away season. ROC got the jump on the youngest members of our club in the first quarter and despite the ongoing effort and determination from all of coach Mel Guic’s players, they just couldn’t pull the score line back, going down by 17 goals. 13 Reds also took battle on Saturday against Tooradin. After a rocky start for the girls, score lines being level at quarter time, this group with their immense talent settled into the game quite well and showed why they are such strong grand final contenders this season. Some great defensive efforts from Holly Moulday and clutch shooting from Kaylah Loulanting saw this team come away with a 13 goal win. 15 White had a nail biter match, in what was the first finals outing for most of the players. Bridget Arthurson lead her squad into battle against Cranbourne hoping they could piece together all their strengths and move onto the Semi’s next week. Finals netball is a whole different game with any team being able to rise up on the day, and Cranbourne took it to our young guns. Being down by 5 goals at the 3 quarter break, the team knew they had to pull out some of their best netball to reduce the deficit, and that they did. Some great ball movement by Jasmine Corless and shooting from Chantelle Wolter got the side to level scores with 2mins to go. Unfortunately some lapses in concentration and defensive pressure from their opposition saw our 15 Whites go down by 3 goals at the final whistle. With their second chance this weekend, the girls will be keen to rectify this performance and progress forward into another week of finals.

weekend, finding themselves in the elimination final against arch rival Beaconsfield. Coach Leanne Walford went into the game with the utmost confidence in her players, and they to rewarded that faith, winning this match by 14 goals. The girls had control of the match from the get go, leading by a minimum of 5 goals at each quarter break and only slightly letting Beacy get a look in. Once again, most of these young ladies have never played finals netball before and to go out with composure and such determination is a credit to each and every one of them. The girls will face another elimination final this weekend against Narre Warren, in what will definitely be a great match.

Great result for our club last weekend. In the qualifying final our 15 white had a close game. Focus and determination giving the team their first win against Berwick for the season. 23-20 C Grade. Some great team work displayed and a good first half. Unfortunately they didn’t win but they have the second chance as they take on Tooradin this weekend. This is sure to be a close and exciting game. All 4 teams who played in Sunday’s elimination finals won their games and are through to this week’s semi-finals.

A BIG congratulations to the following rising stars of BNC who have been invited to the SEFNL awards night, for either, Ranking within the Top 4 Best & Fairest in their age groups or being a member of the SEFNL Representative teams. We couldn’t be more proud of each of you and are so honoured that you are the future of our club. Grace Moore

Our 17 Red team defeated ROC 36-33. A great game by both teams. Our defence end stood strong and provided numerous turn overs with the mid court giving 100% and the shooters converting them into goals. Great display of team work by the girls. Great Effort. Our 17 White showed they really wanted this win. The energy on the court was amazing resulting in 25-18 victory. Looking forward to seeing the same energy again this week. D grade played one of their best games of the season defeating Hampton Park by 15 goals. The talk on the court and the support from the sidelines giving them an extra boost. Congratulations to Kristy Whitnell on playing your 200th game last week. Great achievement! A Grade showcased their amazing netball skills defeating Doveton 45-32. After losing to Doveton the week before, they were mentally and physically prepared

and gave it their all. In a fast paced game our defence was unstoppable and provided a springboard into the attacking where Doveton just had no answers. Good Luck all the teams this week. D Grade: Unfortunately we didn’t come out with the results we wanted today BUT, you fought right until the end to lose by only 6 points! Narre Warren was well represented for the first week of finals, with five teams playing while another four teams earned the week off after finishing on top of their respective ladders. 15 Red: Narre Warren 25 lost to Doveton 28 A tight contest for four quarters with Doveton taking the lead when it counted. The NW girls worked tirelessly but couldn’t match the bigger, taller Doveton attack end. Another chance on Sunday in Semi Final 1.

Congratulations to our 13 White team winning their final on Saturday and good luck for this weekend ! Good Luck also to 13 Red , 15 Red and 15 White in your final this weekend !

13 WHITE : For our first game of finals the girls came our firing from the first quarter with a lead of 12 goals by the end of the first half. Our overall defensive pressure forced many turn overs that where quickly converted into goals. While our second half of the game was quite messy the girls perceived and maintained our lead for a 17 goal win.

17 White: Narre Warren 37 def Doveton 31 This game went goal for goal for the first three quarters before Narre Warren took control with their good decision-making and steady choices. They stretched their lead to six goals at the final whistle. They now take on Beaconsfield in the Preliminary Final. B Grade: Narre Warren 53 def Tooradin 34 A tight first quarter, saw Tooradin take a two goal lead. Narre Warren remained focused determined to hunt down the first turnover. They did so and gained momentum as the final three quarters unfolded. Narre Warren dominated the second half with all nine girls playing role and taking a convincing 19 goal victory. We look forward to facing Beaconsfield in the Preliminary Final. 13 Red: Narre Warren 24 def Beaconsfield 23 While the weather gods turned on the rain and hail for the Elimination finals, Narre Warren came out strong, building a nine goal lead in to the ¾ time break. A recharged Beacy came out fighting to draw the scores level in the final minutes. Luckily, Narre Warren held on for a one goal win and the chance to progress to the Semi Final on Sunday. 13 White: Pakenham 14 def Narre Warren 13 Our littlest netballers put on a gutsy performance against their much taller Pakenham opponents. After the hail delay the girls fought hard to claw back the Pakenham lead. They drew level in the final quarter before going down by a nail biting one goal in the final seconds. Eight NWFNC netball teams progress to Week Two of Finals and our Black and White Army will need to be in full voice to help get our teams in the BIG ONE! Saturday – A, B, C & D Grade, 17 Red & 17 White Sunday – 13 Red, 15 Red Happy Father’s Day to all our netball and footy Dads! Your support at NWFNC is much appreciated. We hope you get spoilt! Congratulations to our U13 White team on their thrilling one goal win which sees them progress to play Berwick at Berwick on Sunday, 3rd September at 8.45 am. Let’s all get behind this young team and show our true club spirit and support by cheering them on loud and proud! Well done to both our U15 and U17 White teams we are so proud of you reaching finals and even though the result didn’t go our way, making finals is a great effort! On behalf of the club we extend our sincere congratulations to the below list of players invited to the SEFNL’s Presentation Night! Well done and good luck on the night girls, we are all so very proud:-

• Meaghan Winter

It was a mixed weekend of results for our first crack at finals last week with U13 Red and B grade going down and A and C grade posting impressive wins.

• Leah Mibus • Romi Esler

Thankfully with the double chance we see all four teams progress to have another chance this week.

We extend our congratulations to the PFC U19s who commence their finals campaign this Saturday at home at 8.30 am. Let’s all get behind this team and show our support! Good luck guys! Go Paky!!!

U13’s kicked of the finals series on Saturday in less than perfect circumstances with injury and illness hitting the team leading up to the game. Despite this our determined young guns came out blazing and managed to take it to a strong Berwick outfit. The second and third quarter saw Berwick run away with the game despite some impressive defensive efforts from Charlotte and Chloe. The last quarter saw some positional changes and the girls showed a “never say die” attitude to finish out the game strongly.

We are looking forward to extending a warm welcome to all clubs this Saturday for the 2nd Semi Finals for SEFNL at Pakenham. Wishing all teams good luck!

This was the first time playing finals for these girls and the club could not be more proud of their determination on the day despite the loss. We can’t wait to watch them take on the Semi final this week. B grade were next against a strong Narre Warren outfit for the second week running. It just wasn’t our day and the girls just couldn’t seem to pull together the netball they are so capable of. We look forward to them giving it their all this week and progressing in the finals series.

C grade finished the weekend off on Sunday with some of their best netball against ROC. In what was a tight match all day our seagulls managed to maintain focus and intensity to hold the lead and finish the last quarter strongly to record a seven goal win. It was a great match to watch and even better to have the Tooradin crowd in full force to get the girls over the line. In another do or die game this week we cant wait to see these girls take on Cranbourne with this form. Congratulations too this week to our players who have been invited to the SEFNL Awards Night: Tara Bratic, Emilie Jones, Charlee Webb, Sasha Williams, Chloe Isgro, Charlotte Shortis, Bridget Holloway, Mairead Holloway, Shona Wells, Leanne Ansalde, Alex Maher and Kelly Andrews.
