PROUD PARTNERS OF

AFL South East The long wait for The Long Walk is over Today’s clash between Doveton and Narre Warren at Robinson Oval is set to be a memorable occasion – with ‘The Long Walk South East 2018’ set to be one of the highlights on the SEFNL calendar. The Long Walk is a charity inspired by former-Essendon champion Michael Long, who 14 years ago walked to Canberra to get the lives of Indigenous people back on the national agenda. Long’s passion and commitment to the cause has seen many events being held around the nation, with The Long Walk South East – driven by Casey Radio 97.7fm sports presenter ‘The Doc’ – growing in stature in this its second year. This year’s event promises to be bigger and more entertaining for families right across the South East. Three games of football will be played, with an Under17’s game between Endeavour Hills and Fountain Gate acting as a curtain-raiser to the reserves and senior games between the Doves and Magpies. The first bounce in the senior game between the traditional rivals will take place at 6pm. A full round of netball, from Under 13s to A Grade, will also take place on the day. There will be a range of family and cultural activities beginning at 12 noon, including a jumping castle and

“Melbourne's Pie King” SUNDAY HERALD SUN

petting zoo for the kids, while an indigenous art exhibition, and traditional face painting, will keep everyone involved in the true spirit of the day. And a strong line up of talent is sure to attract a big crowd and, most importantly, keep them entertained. The Indigenous Hip Hop Crew – fresh off rave reviews after their impressive performance at Federation Square for the ‘Dreamtime’ game – will show off their coolest moves at 3.15pm. Patrons will be entertained by some of Australia’s best Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander talent, with the Dandenong and District Aborigines Co-Op showcasing their talents in pre-game ceremonies. The McMartins will kick off the musical entertainment, before the headline act, ‘The Cool Rockin’ Daddies’ - fronted by Greg Champion from the Coodabeen Champions – take to the stage at 8pm. And then there’s the walk itself, with Australian Olympian Nova Peris joining other notable identities for the walk to Robinson Oval, which begins at 4.30pm sharp from the Doveton Netball Stadium. Casey Radio 97.7fm will begin broadcasting at 3.30pm and will be across all the festivities, conducting interviews and all the senior football action. Indigenous Round will help raise funds for many charities, with all money raised to be distributed evenly between the Long Walk Foundation and charities associated with the Doveton Football Club. The day is proudly supported by major sponsors, The Long Walk Foundation, Casey Radio and the Doveton FNC, and by partners AFL South East, SEFNL, Narre Warren FNC and the Pakenham Gazette. AFL Vic Country AN IMPORTANT STEP FORWARD FOR AFL VICTORIA AFL Victoria took an important step forward as an organisation at the MCG last Sunday when it launched its Reconciliation Action Plan (RAP). The RAP is part of AFL Victoria’s commitment to increasing awareness of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander cultures, histories and achievements to clubs, leagues, schools, local government and community organisations across the state. It’s a significant document that ensures Victoria’s Indigenous culture and heritage is at the forefront of everything we do at all levels of AFL Victoria. The RAP focuses on a number of key areas we are already invested in as an organisation, including a commitment to increase the overall level of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander participation in our game as players, coaches and umpires; creating more employment opportunities for Indigenous people; and continuing to build understanding and respect for Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander customs, values and traditions through education and Community Football and Indigenous Round celebrations. AFL Victoria’s Diversity team and RAP committee – featuring staff from across our organisation – have been working on the plan since last year, and its launch coincided with the Round 3 NAB AFL U18 Championships clash between Vic Country and Vic Metro. The annual clash featured some of the best under-18 TAC Cup talent from across the state, showcasing their skills at a venue they will all hope to play at more regularly in the future as AFL players. The traditional Big V guernseys took on a different look for both sides, featuring an Indigenous design to coincide with the RAP launch. The design has been produced by former Kickstart member and current Eastern Ranges player Todd Garner, the brother of 2017 Port Adelaide draftee Joel Garner.

Joel was at the MCG on Sunday along with North Melbourne’s Jy Simpkin, to assist in presenting the guernseys to the Vic Metro and Vic Country sides pregame. In addition, a Welcome To Country and smoking ceremony also took place on the hallowed turf to highlight our commitment to make an Acknowledgement of Country at all major staff meetings and starting major events with a Welcome To Country.

THE GREAT AFRICAN-AUSTRALIAN FOOTBALL STORY A host of African community members gathered at IKON Park recently for the inaugural Great African-Australian Football Story. In celebration of the end of Africa Month, the new initiative was created to highlight the contribution the African community has made to the game of AFL and the important role Australian Football plays in the lives of the African community. Over 70 community football players, coaches, umpires and community ambassadors gathered to be a part of the event, which saw participants enjoy a host of activities including live music, football activations, BBQ and take part in an historic African community football photo. African-born AFL players Jason Johannisen (Western Bulldogs FC) and Changkuoth Jiath (Hawthorn FC) were in attendance to show their support for the new initiative and meet the next generation of African AFL participants. In Victoria, the African community makes up an important section of the community football landscape with over 500 players playing in local leagues across the state and over 70 players in our NAB AFL Auskick program. Footy Preview Stage is set for a full dress rehearsal By David Nagel Has someone wound the clock forward a couple of months – because round 10 in SEFNL has the feel of a full dressrehearsal for the first weekend of finals in eight weeks’ time. Berwick host Cranbourne in a likely preview of this year’s qualifying final, while Officer welcomes Beaconsfield to Starling Road in an early edition of the elimination final. And all four teams really do have something to prove. Let’s start with last year’s champions Berwick, who host the in-form Eagles at Edwin Flack Reserve. Heading into this season the Wickers were a short-priced favourite for back-to-back titles. Let’s be honest, they were head and shoulders above the rest of the competition last year and looked perfectly placed to dominate all-comers again. But things clearly haven’t worked out that way, the Wickers now a clear third pick for this year’s title. It’s still mathematically possible, but highly unlikely, that Stewart Kemperman and his team will finish top of the ladder this year. That means they will have to defeat both Cranbourne and Narre Warren, and possibly Beaconsfield, to win their third flag in four years. The Wickers would appear to have Beaconsfield’s number – but they have failed in three attempts this year to roll Cranbourne or the Magpies. They need to start winning now! The Wickers next appearance against the top two comes the week before the finals against the Magpies, also at Edwin Flack. Depending on what’s at stake, both teams will probably rest players to have them fit and firing for a finals campaign. So this could be their last chance to take on an elite-quality opponent, both going at full tilt, before they head into the business end of the season. They’ll be desperate for a win the Wickers – just that one win that could inject a level of confidence and take them all the way again this season. Madi Andrews, Travis Tuck, Bryce Rutherford and the returning James Magner are the equal of any midfield in the competition, while superstars like Michael Riseley and Ash Smith will need to be more resilient if the Eagles get on top as they did in round six.

The return of Jimmy Magner will add some real grunt to the Berwick engine room. Leaders are called leaders for a reason – and none of Berwick’s leaders stood up when the Eagles made their charge. Cranbourne surprised everyone, except itself, with a great win against Narre Warren last week. Champion full-forward Marc Holt kicked four to play a huge part in the victory, but it was the Eagles defence that really did lead the way. Brandon Osborne is a gun, while his brother Glenn was joined by Stu Morrish, Jordy Bertrand and Dillan Bass in quelling the powerful Narre Warren forwards. It was a great win from Cranny, who will gain so much confidence if it can back it up with another win against the Wickers. But Berwick will bounce back – and win by three points. If Officer has a strong bone in its body it will hit today’s contest against Beaconsfield with full force at Starling Road.

Footy Preview The Kangaroos were embarrassed by the Eagles in round five, losing by 95 points in one of their poorest displays for the season. The Kangas look set to play finals this year, but have openly admitted they need to set the bar higher and at least claim one victory in the post-season. And if that is to come it will have to come against the Eagles, meaning the Kangas need to start clawing back the initiative…and doing it now. We will find out today if Doug Koop and his boys are good enough to do it, because another comprehensive thrashing could really drain the confidence levels for good. This is the type of scenario where leaders need to stand up, or new leaders emerge, and strong leaders like Ben Tivendale, Sean Roach and Blair Allan will be looking over their shoulders to see who has jumped on board. Beaconsfield is right where it deserves to be, in fourth place on the ladder, and will look to stamp its authority over the Kangas and then aim for higher honours. Players like Scott Meyer, Taylor Joyce, Damien and Daniel Johnston and Josh Dodsworth have seen it happen before, being in a similar situation in 2014 and going on to win the premiership. Jake Bowd, Trent Stokoe, Connor Guley and Robbie McMillan would love to add their names to that honour roll, and can take a small step in that direction by playing great games against the Kangas today. It’s Beaconsfield to prevail by 33 points. Doveton’s long-and-proud indigenous heritage will be on full display tonight when the Doves host Narre Warren in a game the two clubs have dedicated to Michael Long’s ‘The Long Walk’. The Long Walk is a charity inspired by Long, the former Essendon champion who 14 years ago walked to Canberra to get the lives of Indigenous people back on the national agenda.

Officer will need to find a way past Beaconsfield’s Corey Walker this afternoon.

8

Long’s passion and commitment to the cause has seen many events being held around the nation, with The Long Walk South East – driven by Casey Radio 97.7fm sports presenter ‘The Doc’ – growing in stature in this its second year. The build up to this week’s clash will be immense, with both clubs fully engaged in what is sure to be a very special occasion. But, come 6pm, The Long Walk is likely to turn into a very long night for the Doves. For all the goodwill and spirit that this occasion will generate, the harsh reality here is that we have a contest between the best and worst performed teams of season 2018. But there is a common thread here – both are coming off last-start losses. The Doves were brave against Pakenham last week, outscoring the Lions by five goals to three in the second half. Former Western Bulldogs champion Matthew Boyd gave some real stability through the midfield, while early goals to Jake Basa and Alex Mastromanno had the Doves on the front foot. But the Doves lost this game in the second term, the Lions booting seven goals to one to take total control of the contest. And working hard to not concede a quick-run of goals will be a key focus point for the Doves tonight – because the Magpies can score heavily, and in one hell of a hurry. The Magpies were well held by an extremely disciplined and determined Cranbourne outfit last week, suffering their first loss for the season. The dangerous trio of Nick Scanlon, Aaron Wilson and Stewie Scanlon were held to a combined total of one goal, while the Eagles found a way to nullify the impact of Narre Warren’s prime movers. A loss is a loss – no one likes to suffer them – but you get the feeling the Magpies will learn a lot from that performance last week. Brad Scalzo, Michael Collins, Josh Tonna and Dylan Quirk will be keen to lead their team to a very professional performance against the Doves tonight. And that means we’re headed for a 100-plus result. Pakenham needs to win at least three of its last seven games to be a chance of playing in this year’s finals series meaning today’s trip to Tooradin is an absolute must-win for the Lions going forward. It feels like only yesterday that these two met at the Lions’ home ground at Toomuc Reserve, it was June 2 to be exact, the Lions prevailing by 33 points to reverse a 13-point result in round one. So we have the unusual situation arising here where the Seagulls and Lions meet for the second time in the same month of footy. It’s a scenario normally reserved for the elite teams in the competition in September. The Lions kept their faint finals hopes alive with an unimpressive win over Doveton last week. Coach Ash Green would have been pleased with his team’s first half, the Lions leading by 36 points at half time, but they fell asleep after the break.

www.aflsoutheast.com.au

Footy Preview The margin got cut back to 19, with the Doves kicking five goals to three in the remaining two quarters of footy. But players like Jimmy Harrison, Steve O’Bryan, Steve Morey and Chris Cardona – who will battle it out for the Lions’ best and fairest award this year – had worked hard enough to get the job done. Harrison’s class stood out like a beacon last week, booting three goals, while O’Bryan has put together a very impressive last month of footy. The former coach has put his experience to good use, dictating the tempo of the game and controlling things through the midfield. The Seagulls will need to pay O’Bryan some respect this afternoon. The Gulls were just a point away last week from staying in finals contention themselves. But the draw with Officer keeps the gap between the clubs at two wins, meaning the Seagulls would need to win four of their remaining games to be a chance. And that’s not going to happen. But what has happened is the return of some competitiveness to the Seagulls over the last fortnight. They finished strongly to roll Doveton in round eight and then had their chances against the Kangaroos last week. It wasn’t a pretty game of footy against the Kangas, but a tight scoreboard can camouflage those types of things. Dylan Sutton played his best game for the season while the size and presence of Julian Suarez caused the Kangas some headaches at times. The Seagulls have some star quality, with Matt Livermore or Nick Lang likely to go toe-to-toe with O’Bryan, while Andrew Dean will almost certainly have Morey by his side. If Dean can kick a goal a quarter against the Lions’ blanket then the Gulls will more than likely get across the line. Two contests in the month of June, well that means nothing compared to this result – it’s two draws in consecutive weeks for the Seagulls…with scores to be locked at full time.

Footy Notes Narre Warren This week we are privileged with the opportunity to participate in the Long Walk – South East. It’s the 14th anniversary of the original walk by former Bomber legend Michael Long to raise awareness and funds for the plight of underprivileged Indigenous communities. Narre FNC commends and supports Doveton FNC for its fantastic efforts to continue his campaign. In Round 9 Narre hosted our archrival Cranbourne to three great games of footy. Conditions deteriorated gradually as the day progressed; the football was hard, low-scoring and engrossing. Our Ones sized up to an opponent in good recent form. Cranbourne chipped the ball around in their back half defying the greasy conditions and manufactured a couple of ‘sling-shot’ goals, opening up an early break. Meanwhile Narre’s midfield laboured to get the ball forward, but against a strong defence our efforts only produced points when goals were needed. We had plenty of the play to half-time but our return was only 2.10. As the rain set in after the break, goals were like gold. Although our persistence kept Cranbourne goalless in the last quarter we were unable to bridge our 13 point three-quarter-time deficit, and went down by 9. Trent Shinners stood strong and tall in the heavy going and our midfield worked hard with no luck through the likes of Tommy Miller, Mitch Cox, Josh Tonna, Richo and Joel Zietsman – but in the end our slow start and poor kicking cost us. In the Twos, it was Narre who got the early jump opening up a three goal lead at the first break. All the momentum was coming from our half-back line with Jake Boccari, Kyle Graham, Borno, Corey Bader and Nick Mashado winning the contested ball and using it creatively to set up our forwards. Cranbourne kept coming right to the end, but all 22 gutsy Magpie jumpers teamed together for an inspirational 9 point win. Mitch Dempster and Mitch Cowan kicked two goals each. The Under 19s was a thriller, but sadly another disappointment for Narre. After an even first term, Cranbourne kicked away to a five goal lead at half-time. Narre showed plenty of character to gradually whittle down their lead - and we got our noses in front with just 90 seconds to go. But a clean centre clearance and a late free kick saw Cranbourne snatch the win with a goal from the last kick of the match. Sharpie, Ash Williamson and Max Sheppard scored the bulk of Narre’s goals. Kyle Potter, Lachy Baker and Dylan Mutimer were also in our best. Coming events – Friday 6 July - NWFNC Berwick Mazda Corporate Lunch at Fox Road. Beaconsfield Another week of footy and this week we are on the road to Officer. Congratulations to Nick and his committee’s today on hosting a community event which is a excellent initiative for the local areas. In recent our form has been up and down however we are working on maintaining consistency so today we need to consolidate a number of key areas. Today the under 19s who are in red hot form have had a couple of very tough games and today will be no different so they need to maintain their resilience and stay strong and committed to whole day to get the job done. It wont be easy but we are confidant they6 can do it . The reserves who have come off a couple of losses will look to consolidate today in the top group however will need to be on their A game to ensure this happens. The seniors are coming off a very tough couple of weeks against the two ladder leaders we have found ourselves in the mix right to the end but poor scoring accuracy has hurt us in both games now. Today wont be easy Officer are a tough committed outfit and we will need to be on our best for the whole game, any lapses will hurt us, so the boys will need to be ready and willing to get it done. Thanks you to our dedicated sponsors for ongoing support and we will see you all back at Beacy in a few weeks time.

Footy Notes Pakenham Seniors A great win by the team. Reserves With Darren, our regular coach being unable to coach this week against Doveton, I was asked if I would do it. I didn’t even think about it and jumped at the opportunity. To chair the game day meeting about the way we play was a great learning experience. I was fortunate to have Kingy out with a broken nose and he was able to help me on the interchange bench with player movement. A massive help. The game was played to 100% of the way the team was instructed to play. Massively quick ball movement. The game ended up being a 20 goal win. A special mention to Brayden Carr, one of our under 19’s, on kicking 10 goals. A huge thanks to Darren for giving me this opportunity and Kingy is a superstar. Cheers, Scott Club Notes Our Sponsor’s day on 23rd June was very well attended. Mayor Colin Ross, along with many of our much-valued sponsors were provided with a two course meal and drinks while listening to an interesting presentation from our major sponsor, Lakeside Community Bank. The rooms looked great thanks to their decorating efforts and the assistance from the young netballers and a couple of our under 19 players was invaluable. Coming up: Cocktail night 7th July – This night was hugely popular last year and from all reports, a great night. Get in touch with Jackson Hillard for more information. Lion tamer day 7th July – A day for our terrific Lion Tamer supporters. Our $10000 draw is coming up on the 14th July. Grab your favourite player and buy your ticket before they are all sold for your chance to win. On the 4th of August, Pakenham Football Club will be doing its part in raising funds to fight MND with a luncheon featuring Rebecca Daniher as guest speaker. $60 per ticket.

The Beaconsfield Branch of the Bendigo Bank has been a fantastic supporter of the Officer Senior Football Club for a number of years and this week they have jumped on board to help throw a day for the whole community. The Bendigo Bank Community Day will include - Free Entry - Face Painting - Jumping Castle - Games, prizes, raffles, & - Much, much more We would like to thank the Bendigo Bank for their continued support of the OSFC and the local community as a whole. In addition to the action out on the field and the activities around the sidelines, this weekend the ROC Past Players will be hosting a 30-year premiership reunion for 2 sides. We would like to welcome the 1988 reserves and under 18’s premiership players back to the club and we hope they enjoy the day. Out on the track the last 2 weeks, training has been a little different at Starling Rd. Recently the U/11’s, 12’s, 13’s & 14’s all had the opportunity to run out with our senior teams for a training session. Some excellent skills were on display from the Junior Football Club, it was great to see some of the local talent within the junior ranks, which suggests a bright future for the senior club in the coming years. Congratulations to all the juniors that managed to make it down to training and good luck to all the teams this week, both Juniors and Senior Go Roos!!! #RespectAllFearNone

Officer Round 9 in wet and windy conditions playing away at Tooradin we walked away with 1 win, 1 loss and 1 draw from the 3 matches. Weather aside it was a fantastic day of football with a number of outstanding performances from a few of the lads. This week we return home to face Beaconsfield who managed to get the better of us earlier in the season on their home deck. Round 10 is also the Bendigo Bank Community Round.

Footy Notes Berwick We ventured accross the creek last week to take on traditional rivals Beaconsfield. It was the legendary battle of the creek cup sponsored by Russell and Steve for Tip Top Roofing. Thanks guys for your support over the years. The day started off with the 19s going down to a well drilled Beacy team. Having said that the scores were level midway through the last 1/4 and an upset was on the cards. Unfortunately Beacy got a couple late and won the game. Importanlty though we know we are in the mix and come finals time anything can happen. The reserves had a emphatic victory controlling the game all day. Great to have Mozza back out there also. The senior game started just as the rain came down. In what was one of the most slippery games of footy I had seen we were able to grind out a win. 4 points and no injuries is the best we can ask for on a day like that. And guess what, we do it all again at Holm Park Rd in 4 weeks. REMINDERS Cocktail Night. Get you Tix Major Effort - Sell those Tix ASAP

Cranbourne We ducked out to Narre Warren to take on our rivals with plenty of hope that we’d have a good day. The 19’s kicked the due off the ground, actually it was cold enough all day that the due never really went away, and a huge second quarter by our undermanned side saw us go in at the main break with a five-goal lead. Was this to be the day we would knock off one of the top three sides? Into the third quarter and Narre pegged a couple of goals back to trial by only 17 points at the final break and while they’d closed the gap, we were still confident of hanging on. The fourth quarter was a cracker with Narre Warren kicking four consecutive goals while we only added three points. With us trailing by four points and only 90 seconds left, Paul Delaroche was awarded a free kick 45 metres out with only 45 seconds left on the clock, knew he had to kick the goal for us to win. And kick the goal he did!! With the job not quite done the boys had to hold Narre out for the last 10 seconds of which they did to record a remarkable and memorable win.

Best were Dela, Harry Greaves, Nunny, BOT, Jake Cowburn and Matt Smith. The twos were next to go and it was our first quarter which hurt the most and eventually was the difference, being outscored five goals to two. The margin by half time was similar to the quarter time margin of 21 points but at least we’d stemmed the flow. By three quarter time we’d reduced the margin to 17 points and the boys could sniff an upset. In the last, we fought valiantly to get within a kick at one stage, only to go down by eight points in a really good effort considering the shortage of players. Best were Darbo, Keeno, Bubble, Koey, Haz and Burry. Next the ones and our form had been better than solid over the past few weeks. Narre started the better and could have had a good lead by quarter time had they have kicked straight. Our 3.0 meant we lead at the first break by eight points but knew were for fortunate to lead. By half time we lead by 10 points and Narre’s poor kicking at goal was reminiscent of ours in round one. By three quarter time our lead was just seven points and we were going to be in for a great finish although Holty had been knocked out and looking unlikely to take any further part in the game. But you can’t keep the great man down and returned to inspire us to a strong win by kicking four goals and in the process leaving himself just nine goals to his 1000. But most importantly, we came away with a win by 10 points in a stirring win. Best for us were Stuey, Oz, Jake Stephens, Holty, Jordy and Waters. A Night of Clairvoyance We have Joanne King, a renowned clairvoyant coming down to our rooms on Friday July 6 commencing at 7pm. The cost is $25 which includes a light supper. For more information or to book, please contact Jan Davies on 0407 882 274. Go Eagles!!

Bowey blooms into a 350-game champion By David Nagel It’s rather ironic that Belinda Bowey thought she was done and dusted as a footballer at the ripe old age of 14. Ironic, because the former St Kilda City junior will run out for her 350th game of women’s football on Sunday when her beloved St Kilda Sharks take on Cranbourne in SEWF Division Two at Peanut Farm. The now 43-year-old fell in love with the sport at a young age, playing kick-to-kick in the backyard with her twinbrother Matthew and older sibling Brett – who played 85 games for St Kilda in the VFL/AFL between 1988 to ’94. Her parents, Trevor and Claire, had moved the family from Victor Harbour to Adelaide, and then to Melbourne, with the kids going to school in St Kilda. It’s there that the love affair began – a love cut short after her final season in the under 14s. Applying the rules of the day, Bowey was told she was no longer allowed to play with the boys in the under 16s – and there was nowhere else for girls to play footy. Despite not playing she remained involved at St Kilda, boundary umpiring and doing odd jobs to help out. She loved being involved at the club, but a phone call in late 1991 to then 17-year-old would propel her to the lofty heights of the 350-game club this weekend. “I remember the call like it was yesterday, the club was starting a team in the new women’s league and I was asked if I wanted to play…and I jumped at the opportunity,” she said.

“I understood the reasons for not being allowed to play against the boys, they were getting bigger and stronger at that age, But I was still very disappointed not to be playing. “But that phone call, well it changed everything.” Bowey has been playing football ever since – for 26 years to be exact. “I honestly can’t believe it, it’s just been an amazing journey over a 26-year period of my life, a lot more than half of my life running laps, going to training and being involved in the wonderful culture of a footy club,” she said. “I suppose kicking the ball in the backyard with my brothers all those years ago just ingrained footy into me and I haven’t known it any other way. As long as I’m still contributing and helping the team in some way and I’m happy to keep on going. “I thought this year would be it, but the 350 is here now and every week feels like a highlight.” As you would expect Belinda has a long list of achievements to her name, playing State footy for Victoria and playing in three premierships, going back-to-back as a player in 1998-’99 before winning as a player-coach at the club in 2004. She rates that season as her most memorable time in the game. “That was an amazing year because not only did we win the premiership but we got to play on the MCG as well,” she said.

“It was such an amazing experience. I remember the siren going to start the game and the feeling just went all the way through my body. A few of us were a bit distracted at the centre bounce and forgot we had to focus on the ball. “That was an experience I will treasure for the rest of my life.” Bowey said football had kept her active, in both a mental and physical sense. “It’s such a great release to just go out and play footy… that’s one of the things I love most about it,” she said. ”I remember one of my team mates saying she wasn’t going to play because she wasn’t in a good head space and told her ‘these are times when you have to play’. It’s just great to get away from the pressures of work and just go out and get a kick and lay tackles.” She said she has refined her style as the years have gone on. “I’m a lot smarter now, just playing the sweeper role and reading the play and trying to put my experience to good use,” she said. “I started out on the wing and then moved to a runner off half back but now I just read the play and work out where the next option is.” Bowey is still going strong, playing for the St Kilda Sharks and in the Over-30’s Masters League. She is also involved as an assistant-coach with the Sandringham Dragons TAC Cup Under-18s Girls, where she is helping to develop some of the future stars of the women’s game.

“It’s incredible to watch the talent coming through, and all I can say is that the future of the game is in very good hands,” she said. “These girls are super-talented and have the opportunities now that we could only have dreamed of as a kid. The future of women’s football is very exciting.” So does she have the motivation to kick on to the 400game milestone? “It’s definitely on my mind now. It’s a bit harder to get motivated to get to training at my age but once I’m there I remember everything I love about the game and it always becomes enjoyable. “I just love the sport.”

Doveton 2005 The Doves were great back then... By David Nagel

Doveton and Narre Warren may sit at opposite ends of the ladder as they head into tonight’s clash at Robinson Oval – but it was a very different looking scenario when the two sides took part in the 2005 Casey Cardinia Grand Final at Edwin Flack Reserve. The Doves were the red-hot favourites heading in, and rightfully so after an undefeated season and a six-goal victory over the Magpies in the second semi-final. But a cold, wet and windy day gave the Magpies the perfect opportunity to cause an upset. The Magpies looked on track for a boil-over, leading narrowly at quarter and half time, before the Doves dug deep to win by seven points, 6.8.44 to 5.7.37, in a classic display of wet-weather football. Narre Warren supporters and officials were privately seething at several umpiring blunders that they believed could have seen the result reversed, however there was no denying that the best team throughout 2005 was crowned premiers. The Doves had played off unsuccessfully in five grand finals since their last premiership in 1988. The Doves also won the under-18s flag, with neither premiership side tasting defeat in 2005.

Narre Warren coach Paul Hamilton sent his two best defenders in Steven Kidd and Jack McTaggart to Doveton guns Danny Casset and Ryan Brown, who returned to the side after an eight-week injury break. At the other end Brad Downe took Lee Clark, while Mark Mott got the job on dangerous Magpie Brett Evans. Doveton coach Steve Henwood assessed his team at halftime and realised that their composure and focus was not an issue. “At half-time they knew they weren’t playing well, but no one was panicking,” Henwood said. “I could see that even though they were behind they were not worried and that made me relax. It wasn’t a time to tear heads off, but just to coach sensibly. I said that we had to be a little bit smarter, not handball when we shouldn’t and just grab the ball and kick it.” The tactic worked well and the Doves booted 1.4 to two behinds in the third term to lead by seven points at the final change with momentum and the scoring end in the last quarter. Goals to Brown and the nippy Michael Henry proved enough for Henwood and skipper Clint Wilson to hold aloft the club’s first premiership cup in 17 years. Doveton midfielder Trevor Davies was awarded the VCFL medal for best afield, while David George scored the media award for the same accolade.

Doveton 2005 Other top-notch contributors for the winners included Callum Pattie, Matt Miller, Mott and captain Wilson, while Narre Warren was well served by Daniel Field, Shane Dwyer, Kidd, Brett Wadelton and Cole Harvey. Henwood was ecstatic after the game and praised both sides on their endeavour. “It came down to one of those days where both sides had to put their heads down and go for it,” he said.

I would hope we can improve, go on and do it again with Steve and the group we’ve got.” The Doves have since played in two grand finals – the Magpies gaining revenge in 2006 and Pakenham defeating the Doves by 58 points in the 2009 decider. But many rate the Doveton premiership team of 2005 as one of the finest to have played in the 14-year history of the Casey Cardinia – South East Football Netball League.

“We were slow to react to the conditions. We’ve cleaned up so many sides, but the conditions were hard and there was never going to be a big margin today.

CASEY CARDINIA GRAND FINAL - 2005

“At times in the third quarter I thought we might wrap it up, but Narre was terrific. They just wouldn’t give it away and it added up to a magnificent, high-pressure final.”

Doveton president Brian Tibballs announced the reappointment of Henwood after the game and praised the efforts of the many loyal club people who had dedicated themselves to the task.

“It’s an exciting time obviously and I’m just happy for a lot of people that have worked so hard around the club for so many years,” he said in the post-match euphoria. “They haven’t had the success of a premiership and they deserve it as much as anyone. “I’m also proud of the young blokes that have come up and now become premiership players at the club.

Netball Preview A real balancing act for the Doves By David Nagel Doveton’s season is balancing on a knife-edge at the moment and the Doves will know a lot more about their future prospects after their clash against Narre Warren at Robinson Oval. The Doves sit fourth and can take a giant stride towards securing a double chance if they can get over the top of the third-placed Magpies tonight. But the counter balance is they could also be in serious danger of missing out on a top-five spot if things don’t go their way. The Doves are just a game clear of ROC in sixth spot, with the Kangaroos needing to defeat Beaconsfield or Berwick over the next fortnight to really apply some pressure on the Doves. Hence why tonight’s contest, which begins at 6.15pm, is so crucial for the Doves moving forward. The Doves took three quarters to fully shake off a determined Pakenham last week, leading by just five goals at three-quarter time before a 12-6 final term put the issue beyond doubt. Kyla Quinn and Hayley Stewart shared the centre duties, while Liz Edwards and Leah Seeto kept Pakenham goalers Kyra Esler and Carly Saunders under wraps. Doveton’s opponent tonight, the Magpies, led by four goals at half time against Cranbourne last week but a poor third-quarter let the Eagles back into the contest. The Eagles scored 11 goals to six to take a one-goal lead to the final break before the Magpies woke from their slumber. Erin Clark, Britt Mashado and Kealeigh Brown gave some great drive through the midcourt while Jemma Osborne and Chloe Phillips kept cool and composed under the ring. A 41-41 draw was a fitting result for both parties. The Magpies will get over the line here by five goals. ROC has already claimed the scalp of Beaconsfield once this year and will look to do it again when the two sides clash at Starling Road today. The Kangaroos were no match for Tooradin last week – they’re not on their lonesome there – but will fancy their chances of defeating the Eagles again. Zoe Callanan, Mel Overdyk and Sara Villiers got the Kangaroos off to a solid start against the Seagulls last week but the strength of the reigning champs proved too powerful in the end. Beaconsfield had a tough battle against Berwick last week before powering away with a 17-6 final term. Bianca Sanzaro and Dani Fedel were at their sharp-shooting best for the Eagles while Abbie Sheers and Tanya Mijovic did a great job in defence. ROC will be competitive once again, but Beacy will be super-motivated and will walk away from Starling Road with the win.

Beaconsfield goal-keeper Abbie Sheers gets first hands to the ball against Berwick last week. Sheers will be an important player against ROC today.

Berwick is running out of chances to score its first win of the season and the Wickers would love to end that streak against Cranbourne today. The Wickers showed some great signs last week against Beaconsfield with Jaime Cotter, Finlay McMillan, Hayley Alman and Olivia Macente giving plenty of cheek to one of this year’s premiership fancies. Cranbourne showed it is getting back to playing its best netball with a 41-41 draw against Narre Warren last week. It was a brave effort under the circumstances, missing one of their gun players in Alanah Hardy. But Allie Oakenfull, Tara Cecil and Tahlia Coates have enough quality to make sure there are no nasty upsets today. Sorry Wickers, you will have to delay those first-win celebrations for at least another week – it’s Cranbourne by 10 goals. And the high-flying Tooradin-Dalmore rounds out this week’s fixture with a visit from Pakenham. Surprisingly, for teams so far apart on the ladder, the margin hasn’t been great in the two contests between these sides this year. The Gulls prevailed by nine goals in round one and then by 11 in round seven. Lauren Wenn, Cath McCowan and Jenna Douglas have been brave for the Lions this year, but this will be their biggest test. The Seagulls will be keen to stretch that margin out a little today, and Alex Maher, Sara Duncan and Ebony Dolan will lead the premiership favourites to a comprehensive 20-goal victory.

the netball we know they’re capable of, and it’s great to see that paying it off with some good results. D-Grade continue to play some great netball, and despite three players going down with injuries on the weekend, they were able to still get a win due to the depth and flexibility in their team. Unfortunately, the junior teams were unable to get any wins on Saturday, with ROC being quite strong competition. The girls still go out with lots of intensity and determination each week. The 17s White team played one of their better games for the season, and edged close to ROC but we’re not quite able to get the win. This week we welcome Pakenham to our courts for our third clash of the season in what is sure to be another great day of netball. It’s a special day for one of our young gulls Makayla DaRose who will play her 50th game for the club this Saturday! Still in our 13s side, it’s an amazing achievement for someone so young who started playing with the Gulls at just nineyears-old. Makayla has improved out of sight over the past few seasons, and we look forward to seeing her continue to develop as a netballer in the future. A big congratulations Makayla and good luck in your milestone game! Tickets must be purchased ASAP for our Annual Formal Night on Saturday 7 July and can be purchased at www.trybooking. com/394042. We’d love to see as many players, parents and supporters there so jump on and get your tickets now before it’s too late. GO SEAGULLS!!

It was great to welcome ROC to the club on Saturday and return to our home ground, after only playing a couple of games at home this season. The four senior sides all had good wins, with A-Grade still remaining undefeated for the season and continuing to play great netball week in, week out. B-Grade battled it out in a tight four quarters with ROC and managed to come away with a four-goal win, despite being a little depleted with a few players out. Rachel Cole and Ebony Mason combined beautifully in defence and got so many turnover, earning themselves the awards for the day. After going down by just one goal to ROC earlier in the season, C-Grade were determined to turn the result in their favour this week, and that they did with a strong team effort to secure a 14-goal win. The C-Grade girls have really improved over the past few games and are now playing

Netball Notes Beaconsfield A Grade Versatility certainly isn’t a problem for this side as we played yet another combination of players.Tanya showed her equally great defensive skills in GD,working flawlessly with Abbie. We welcomed Emily from the 17s for her second game, and Ebony Lang had a terrific first game in WA.Rylee led from the front and showed her agility in C,as well as leadership and support,as Kaela was sidelined for the Hawks VNL game.Zoe was outstanding in her pressure as WD,while Bianca and Danni showed what an exciting pair they are in goals. As always it was a pleasure to line up against Berwick, who applied great pressure on us in the wet conditions. Awards-Rylee, Zoe & Bianca B Grade In a rematch of the Battle of the Creek,Beacy welcomed Berwick to Holm Park. The girls started well with a 4goal lead against a new look Berwick since we last took them on in Round 1.Some very clever play in the second quarter allowed the girls to push out to a 10goal advantage at half time, but a slick Berwick hit back to close the gap to 6 in the third.Defensive pressure right from the last quarter whistle was the turning point, causing early turnovers that were converted well in attack.Beaconsfield closing it out with a 9goal victory. Awards-Gabby, Elise & Ebony D Grade Home to Berwick this week,we started out really strong and continued that way throughout the 4 quarters, each player playing their role and executing some of our structures with confidence.I love the way this team gives everything, plays equally and continually backs each other.Every part of our game today was delivered with Beacy pride, well done. Awards-Taylah, Claire & Madi P U15 Red The 15 Red team can’t seem to get settled! This season we’ve had players away due to injuries, sickness, special events and camps and it continued against Berwick. As a result, the team’s game has been unpredictable and a little inconsistent.Nether the less, not one player on court has dropped their head and have remained determined. This is the best asset of the 15 Red team, and will hold them in good stead for the remainder of the season. Awards:Ariah, Millie & Abbey U15 White From a slow sloppy 1st quarter to a controlled 4th quarter,it was a very up and down match. From the moment we stepped on court I knew we didn’t bring our A game to today’s match, with Berwick getting the jump on us.Quarter by quarter the girls improved, applied feedback and displayed the fight of wanting the win more. With endless mistakes and not our best netball being displayed leading into the last quarter,it seemed

36

evident how the match may have ended. The girls fought hard and dug deep to convert turnovers.A massive thank you to Jemma who came up from the U13 Reds. You had a great presence on court and blew my expectations with your performance today!Awards went to Alyssa and Lauren today, two young ladies who showed great perseverance with tough contests throughout the match. U13 Red The girls started strong against the ladder leaders & intensity was up from the first whistle. They worked hard against very good competition, making some great connections up the court, and getting some great defensive turnovers. Unfortunately at times we struggled to capitalise on the turnovers, this saw the intensity drop a little. A few positional changes saw the intensity lift again with girls digging deep, unfortunately we couldn’t finish it off going down by 1. I was proud of the girls today, they worked hard and didn’t give up. Awards: Keira, Kyana & Ella U13 White This week the girls took on top of the ladder Berwick and came away with a 16 point win! Their composure throughout all 4 quarters was a credit to them and it was fantastic to see the growth in the team from our first game against Berwick back in Round 1. We are looking forward to taking on ROC next week for another great match up. Awards: Sienna, Tahnee & Ella

Berwick Battle of the Creek Take 2 15 Reds- After a few tough games and even tougher training sessions we were able to unite and deliver against Beacy. What a great defensive game by all with solid defensive pressure the whole way down the court. Each player demonstrated great skills and teamwork to back one another up. A massive performance by both Brooke and Delylah who stepped up from 13’s. The team will continue to dig deep, train hard and bring all they have for the remainder of the season. 15 Whites- Beacy came today with their A game today and it resulted in our first loss. The girls fought hard from the beginning, however there were silly mistakes and playing at a slower pace was our downfall. This week we regroup and come back to how we know we can play. 17 white - With excitement for the game high, with welcoming back Aker, the girls started the game off strong. Our biggest fault at the moment is our

www.aflsoutheast.com.au

Netball Notes consistency and making silly mistakes which cost us a lot of turnovers. Special mention to Simone and Aker for playing strong games at their respective ends. Our best on went to Amy who had a very strong consistent game in all positions she was put in. 17 reds - Today has a fantastic game showing strength across the court with a 54-16 goal win against. Beacy. Introduced a new player to help us during holidays Talia Anderson who came on court with an immediate impact in defence. Kaylah Loulanting winning best on court having her best game of the season. Combining well with both Goalers and taking opportunities she created. C Grade - This week we decided to change up our warm up and pre-game routine, this proved to help as we were only down by 5 after quarter time which is an improvement for us! We are still struggling with consistency, but are showing great plays and ball movement at times. The girls are showing they are determined and willing to learn and work hard, our second win should only be just around the corner! Special mention to Zoe Harward, playing WD for the first time this season with great defensive pressure. B grade- Getting closer but again missing one quarter of netball doesn’t get you to the winning post. Some great defence during the day to an established team who were very vocal.. Best on court Lauren Castricum. A grade team going into the game undermanned really showed true grit and character. The team play was more consistent than past games but beacy experience and patience proved too good. Best on court was Finlay Mcmillan whole game in GD. She didn’t stop running in attack and took some fantastic intercepts. The team is improving this year not to be top of the table but learning to be more disruptive. As always we are ever so grateful for our major sponsors in Berwick Mazda, Smart Cleaning, Straight Smiles and The Main Berwick. Your continued support is always appreciated by all at the Berwick Netball Club.

With quite a few different rotations the girls showed how versatile they can be. It was a fantastic 4 quarter team effort. Each week the girls are improving and playing better as a team. Best on court awards Jenna, Avani, Tahni, Elly & Micaela. U13 Red: NW 26 def Cranbourne 24 Congratulations on a win today girls! Defenders were tight and competitive as usual. Good play throughout the mid court and into the goals, with Lara shooting accurately to win the game by 2.

U15 White: NW 26 def Cranbourne 18 Our girls came away with a great win against top of the table Cranbourne this week. The game highlighted the effort the girls have put in all season and how much they have improved. U15 Red: Cranbourne 30 def NW 25 A great improvement from our first round hit out against Cranbourne. Just couldn’t put together a full 4 quarters. Awards to Hayley, Rochelle and Holly Simpson. U17 White: NW 37 def Cranbourne 25 U17 Red: Cranbourne 40 def NW 28 The girls knew that it would be a tough game against a strong opposition. We just couldn’t match their patience and drive on the day. A strong captains performance from both Kacey and Taylah. D Grade: NW 44 def Cranbourne 21 Great team effort today by D grade. We continued to support each and work as a unit, having some fun along the way.... Awards went to Sim, Liv, Georgia & Caitlyn. Well done to all though. C Grade: NW 47 def Cranbourne 33 Today was the best team effort for the season. The girls worked hard at training and the benefits were seen today. Well done girls. Awards to Taylah Hammond, Alex Stephenson, Hayley Carmichael, Taylah Simpson and Suzie Bourchier. B Grade: NW 61 def Cranbourne 49 A Grade: NW 41 drew Cranbourne 41 We had a tough hit out against Cranbourne in wet, cold and slippery conditions. After a very slow start, we put together a dynamic second quarter and hit the lead by half time. The second half was inconsistent for us. We had opportunities but were not always able to capitalize. In the end we did well to fight back and draw the game. Game awards to Caity S, Brit T, Chloe and Britt M. Netball Notes Pakenham

Doveton

For Round 9 we not only celebrated jointly with both the Senior & Junior Football clubs our annual Sponsors and Life Members day, we also celebrated the return to the courts after five years of Gabbie Smethurst. Gabbie had enjoyed playing for the club since she was 10 until her world was turned upside down in January 2014 with a serious car accident. Gabbie endured four operations including a bone graft and many years of intensive rehabilitation. During this time, Gabbie’s strong passion for netball and her Pakenham Lions Netball Family continued which saw her actively involved firstly in coaching and then being on the committee. The club proudly stood to its feet and provided Gabbie a standing ovation as she was handed that GS bib and walked onto the court for Round 9. Gabbie you are truly an inspiration! Gabbie’s has demonstrated clearly over the past five years to get to this point, real resilience, character, hard work and positive attitude. We have shared Gabbie’s setbacks and her disappointments along this journey, but never once did Gabbie give up, she always got up stronger and better than ever. Congratulations Gabbie, super proud of you. On Saturday we utilised our new club marquee, which proved a great place to shelter when the rain came. Sincere thanks to Claire Miles and her amazing team at Claire Miles Conveyancing situated at 8/18 Main St, Pakenham for your sponsorship of this project and for Corey Anderson from our committee for his hard work on bringing this project to fruition for the club. The club has many activities we are preparing for over the next 7 rounds, some being: • Round 12 – Amy Gillet Foundation Fundraiser & Afternoon Tea • Round 13 – Annual Cocktail Night • Round 14 – Motor Neurone Disease (MND) Fundraiser Event

This weekend we headed to Pakenham - thank you for hosting a great day of netball. The rain held off all day until A grade – making it a very wet game! U13 Red/White - Missing players this weekend (U13 White playing with only 5) but these baby doves take the court and give it their very best!!! U15 Red - Over the last few weeks the girls have come out in the very first quarter ready to play. They have played strong, skilled netball but today’s games against Pakenham showed we need to work a bit more on our passes as way too many passes went to the opposition. In saying that it was a good win in the end! U15 White - We struggled on court to move the ball fluidly – we didn’t play our game and let the opposition dictate. We need to get our heads right from warm up to concentrate on stringing four good quarters together. Next game on our home court should rev these girls up to play their very best netball! U17 Red - Well, Well, Well… The good and the bad – some good signs but also some bad. Need to be more consistent for longer, stronger mentally and a will to be better. But a win is a win… U17 White - The girls are getting strong by the week. Today they had a hard game which showed at half time on the scoreboard. After our half time chat the girls came out ready to play - they were sent out to do a job and they all did it to a T. The girls backed each other up and had plenty of voice and even Chelsea got an intercept, we won’t hear end of – ha ha! D Grade - Well, Well, Well… Attitude ladies – after two big weeks of energy and enthusiasm, we let ourselves down. We showed some good signs after half time, when we moved the ball around and we moved forward we scored easy. Great work Bec Hendy and Melinda Wilson down the back!! Let’s work hard on being more consistent over four quarters. C Grade - Not a positive performance on court – this team is capable of more. Need to protect the ball more, do our own jobs instead of worrying about what other people are doing and trust in the process. Some good passages of play, need to focus on what we can control as individuals and play to the umpires, remembering that there are 7-8 players in a team not 7-8 individuals.

Netball Notes Great to see Emily and Abbey back on court in the Doves colours! B Grade - Really struggling to find our form with so many players not being available. Had some great replacements that did and an exceptional job and really tried hard. Well done to Ash, Charli, Abbey, Amber and Suli who really stepped up and played with heart for our team this weekend. More consistency on court and with players showing up to play will help moving forward. Better performance required for our night round this coming week! A Grade - Good win for the girls in wet conditions. Head coach Liz in defence creating havoc for Pakenham attackers. Lots of good thought process and keeping our cool with passing selection and movement of the ball. Well done to Shon, Roni and Kyla for stepping up in the absence of those unavailable due to VNL commitments. Well done girls – best on court and leading by example: Liz Edwards (head coach)

South Eastern Women’s Football By Lachie Ramage The long-awaited clash between Eastern Devils and Seaford takes place at Belvedere Reserve today with the two undefeated teams locking horns with premiership favouritism up for grabs. The Devils have been superb so far this season, conceding just six goals in seven rounds of footy. Emily Mcilvena, Chloe Hunt, Shelley Beggs and Georgia Punton are four of the top-five goal-kickers in the competition and are sure to stretch the Tigers in defence. Kaitlyn Carew and Jess Baguley are dangerous up forward for the Tigers and will need huge games to get the home side across the line. It’s the Devils to win comfortably. Recapping round seven, and Carew kicked three goals in the Tigers’ 40-point win over Mornington, while Punton warmed up for this week’s game with four goals in the devils’ 58-point victory over Chirnside Park. Meanwhile Carlee Portlock was best-on-ground for St Kilda Sharks in an 83-point triumph over Beaconsfield. Portlock kicked five goals for the day, while Ruby Clayton and Sam Dobson kicked two each as Cranbourne remained in third spot with a 12-goal win over Endeavour Hills. And Aoife O’Gorman and Andrea Cameron starred in Port Melbourne’s 90-point victory over Gippsland Maroons. In Division Two, Keira Beswick provided the individual highlight of the round with a five-goal haul in Tyabb’s comprehensive 39-point defeat of the Eastern Devils.

44

Carly Bury kicked two majors and Sam Ryan was best in Seaford’s 52-point triumph over Edi-Asp, while Tayla StahlSmith was impressive, booting three goals in Bass Coast’s 75-point win over Cranbourne. The Breakers remain unbeaten at the top of the ladder. And bad kicking couldn’t deny Warragul, who kicked 4.13.37 to 2.1.13 to roll St Kilda Sharks at Eastern Park. Division Three served up some absolute beauty’s last week with Mornington winning the battle for second spot with a hard-fought seven-point victory over Seaford. The Bulldogs, inspired by three goals to Megan Cahill, held off the fast-finishing Tigers. Cerberus/Crib Point has jumped to fifth place on the ladder after a five-point victory over Officer. Sarah Flanders was well held by the Kangaroos but the visitors still found a way to win. Madeleine Fitzpatrick, Caitlyn Davey and Mikaela McSweeney were all sensational in defeat for Officer. In other games, Lindsay Tucker had a day out with seven goals in Frankston’s 102-point defeat of a depleted Pakenham, while Rachel Redinger and Sarah Stevens slotted two each in Karingal’s 32-point win over Red Hill. And Hastings remains undefeated after a 46-point victory over Pearcedale. Laura Beattie and Makayla Young kicked five between them for the Blues, while Katie Mitchell gave maximum effort for the Panthers.

Stingray’s far too strong for the Rebels The Dandenong Southern Stingrays scored a comfortable 59-point, 15.16.106 to 7.5.47, win over the Greater Western Victorian Rebels on Saturday. The Stingrays were menacing from the get-go and never allowed the Rebels a sniff. Dandenong benefitted from a spread of goalkickers, with Bailey Schmidt and Stephen Cumming bagging four goals each, with Josh Johnson, three, and Jarryd Barker, two, also kicking multiple six-pointers. Schmidt and Cumming were the pick of the forwards, bullying their defenders with the high ball. But the bright light came from first-game bottom-age player Johnson, who relished the opportunity to play as the primary lead-up forward. Through the middle, Campbell Hustwaite showed off more of his brilliant form, with support from the likes of Ned Cahill, Matt Cottrell and Lachlan McDonnell. Down back, however, was where the Stingrays really shone. Matthew Cumming gave his best performance of the year while Jai Taylor, who moved to defence earlier in the season, was also outstanding. Both were supported by the rock, Matt Gahan, who continues to rise in the ranks of the recruiters. The Stingrays opened up a 29-point lead at the first change and then played an electrifying brand of football, kicking seven goals to two in the second term. Stephen Cumming kicked three and Bailey Schmidt two, with singles to Fin Bayne and Johnson opening up a 59-point lead at the main break. The Stingrays cruised home in the second half and now sit two games clear at the top of the ladder. Stand-in coach Nick Cox was pleased with the final result. “Leading into this game the challenge given to the group was to play the Stingrays brand of football, no matter who the personal was, don the jumper, play your role,” Cox said. “The Rebels came at us, particularly in the first quarter trying to deny us our style of play. It was good to see how they responded – our second and third quarters, I thought, were fantastic. “We outscored them and we outworked them for three quarters. The last quarter in junk time we were poor, so it’s a good lesson for the players to learn from that.” The Stingrays will now enjoy a week off with their next game at home against the Geelong Falcons on Saturday July 7 at 2pm. “This next game is really important for us, not only for this year but for next year as well,” said Stingrays Talent Manager Mark Wheeler.

“This is a new concept from AFL Victoria…future rounds. It is where ever side must field a minimum of eleven 17-year-olds. “It helps AFL recruiters look at future drafting, but for us it helps to give games to our talented bottom-age players so we can nurture their growth. They’ve been training hard, doing everything we’ve asked since November 2017. “This concept forces our hand a little when it comes to list selection and how we build the two-year list. Today, like last year, saw some 17-year-olds stand tall, delivering on the bigger stage and that puts pressure on the topage players for the remainder of the year - we love the concept.” TAC CUP RESULTS Dandenong Stingrays 5.5 12.7 15.12 15.16.106 Greater Western Victoria Rebels 1.0 3.2 5.2 7.5.47 Dandenong Stingrays Goals: B.
