PROUD PARTNERS OF

AFL South East We are now in the second half of the season and just weeks away from the most exciting time of the year. And while a number of teams are now competing for a finals spot, there is one other team playing an important role in proceedings each and every weekend. AFL South East has over 500 active umpires officiating each weekend, servicing over 220 games per week across all our senior and junior leagues. The third team on the park is just like any of our clubs - training and coaching sessions during the week before going out on the weekend to do their very best to service the game. Just like players they will make mistakes, no one is perfect, but they don’t go out there trying to ruin the game. Umpires do their best and just like players hope to perform to their best in order to be selected for the big games at the end of the season. This year we have had some very poor behaviour displayed towards umpires. In junior football we have had umpires abused and leaving the ground in tears, we have had umpires threatened, all over perceived opinions on whether an umpire has made the right or wrong decision. The problem is not just in junior football. We have also seen this behaviour in senior football, from on and off-field abuse and threats, to post match issues with umpires in social functions, and even when walking to their vehicle.

Umpires understand that with their role they face scrutiny and pressure, however no one deserves abuse, threats or physical altercation over decisions they make. As we all start to prepare for finals and a break at the end of the season, many players will be thinking about if they will return for the 2019 season or if this may be their last. Coaches, club officials and volunteers will also be thinking if they are happy to go around again next year. The third team on the park will also have these thoughts. Umpires will be weighing up if they want to go around again and put up with the standards of behaviour being displayed towards them. Umpires play a critical part in our leagues and currently we do not have enough with many of the 500 active umpires officiating in up to five games over a weekend. We need many more umpires for 2019, however if they continue to face abuse, threats and on and off field confrontation we will not retain enough, nor grow our umpire numbers to what is needed. In a tight game, invariably the umpire will be blamed and subject to verbal attack. But what about the players? Missed tackles, missed targets, a failed spoiling attempt, undisciplined acts that gave away crucial 50-metre penalties all play a role in the final result. Like the players, the umpire is doing his best. And just like the players they should be encouraged. As you enjoy the football this weekend, and for the remainder of the year, think about how you react and if you would want your son/daughter treated that way? Would you want to experience abuse, threats or confrontation on and off the field? Parents, players, officials, supporters, take a moment and think about it. This is a just a game after all.

Carlon, who has played every game for the Edi-Asp seniors this year, received the great honour from Vic Country Under-19 coach Damien Sexton ahead of the annual Under 19 Challenge Cup to be held at Ballarat’s MARS Stadium on Sunday. Mt Eliza’s Bailey Breen and Tom Small have also been selected in the 23-man squad, alongside exciting Rosebud defender Josh Harris, while Karingal’s Jarrod Sullivan has been selected as an emergency. Of the nine leagues represented in the Energy Safe Vic Country Under 19 squad, the MPNFL and Ovens and Murray are the best represented with five selections each, followed by Goulburn Valley and Geelong with four. The Energy Safe Vic Country Under 19s have recorded emphatic victories in their last four encounters against the VAFA, defeating their metro rivals by four-points last year at Frankston Oval. The Under 19 Challenge Cup match will kick off at 11.30am before the highly anticipated 2018 AFL Victoria Community Cup clash between Vic Country and Vic Metro at 2pm. The MPNFL is also well represented in the WorkSafe Vic Country senior representative squad with Frankston YCW trio Brenton Credlin, Christian Ongarello and Lachie Wallace join Frankston Bombers star Sam Fox in an extended 29-man squad. Eleven leagues are represented in the Vic Country senior outfit, with Geelong Football Netball League boasting the most selections (six), followed by Ovens and Murray (five), with the MPNFL and Goulburn Valley having four players selected. St. Kilda great Danny Frawley will once again coach the WorkSafe AFL Vic Country side for the second consecutive year, as he prepares to secure his first win in the role.

Seymour’s Jason Cole has been named the captain of the Vic Country squad, while Xavier Moloney (Swan Hill FC), Kayne Pettifer (Kyabram FC) and Bob McCallum (Drouin FC) will support him in the role of Vice Captains. Footy Preview Berwick is back in business By David Nagel Berwick finally had the win it was searching for last week and will now set its sights on regaining a top-two position against Officer at Starling Road. The Wickers finally cracked it for a win against one of the top-two teams in the competition by dismantling Cranbourne in an emphatic display of wet-weather football at Edwin Flack Reserve. The Blues and Eagles engaged in a torrid first-quarter arm wrestle, before the home side kicked eight of the next nine goals in a confidence boosting day at the office. The Wickers have been looking for a trigger all year – and we might look back on Saturday June 30 as the day that Stewie Kemperman and his boys regained their position in the pecking order. It was just a great day all round. Skipper Madi Andrews played a blinder, putting his own stamp on a special day for his family. Madi’s brother Jordy last played for the Berwick seniors in April 2015 and returned last week to cover the loss of some key players. Key big-man Andrew Morozoff also re-joined the fray and will play a key role when the Wickers look for back-to-back titles in September. But the biggest positive was the way the Wickers dominated after half time – keeping their heads over the footy after things became willing just prior to the main break. The Wickers just need to win today to leapfrog Cranbourne into second place – but can Officer stop them from doing it? The Kangaroos showed glimpses against Beaconsfield last week, kicking four goals to three in the third quarter, but just don’t have the capacity right now to match the better teams in the competition over 120 minutes of footy. The third quarter was the only positive for the Roos last week, kicking just one goal for the remainder of the contest.

The run and carry of Jake Bowd will be important for Beaconsfield against Pakenham.

Defender James Waldon will once again get a big job today after limiting the impact of Nathan Langley last week, while the solid bodies of Ben O’Loughlin, Sean Roach and Michael Thompson were important in the conditions and will be so again today. A wet and greasy day at Starling Road provides the perfect canvas for the Kangaroos to take on the classy Wickers. But Berwick has all the bases covered. Michael Riseley, Will Arthurson, Jo West, Nick Hillard and Luke Sheppard will be proud of keeping Cranbourne to two goals last week, and will be looking to match that sort of impact against the Kangaroos today. Whichever way you look at it – it’s the Wickers to win easily and regain their position in the top two.

Footy Preview Tooradin-Dalmore has claims to being the best team in the bottom-half of the ladder right now but faces a huge challenge when ladder-leading Narre Warren pays a visit to Westernport Oval today. The Seagulls have enjoyed their best patch of form for the season in recent times with a draw against Officer sandwiched between two wins against Doveton and Pakenham. Lachie Gillespie and his team have really responded well because a six-game losing streak had the potential to put a real downer on their season. But the leaders of the club have really stood up with Julian Suarez capping off a fine recent run of form with four goals against the Lions last week – including the opening two of the match – while Michael Hobbs, Matt Livermore and Jake O’Donnell have been super-effective around the ground. Ryan Kitchin played his best game for the season last week, while Dylan Wilson has been a consistent performer for the Seagulls this year. Tooradin can really achieve something over the next fortnight with today’s contest against the Magpies to be followed by a difficult trip to Casey Fields to take on Cranbourne. In all likelihood they won’t win either game – but to show some resilience and really stick together under immense pressure will hold the Seagulls in good stead going forward. The Magpies provide the ultimate challenge right now. They had 13 goal scorers in last week’s 143-point thrashing of Doveton, with Aaron Wilson bagging five and Nick Scanlon, Trent Shinners and Tom Miller three each.

Tooradin’s Andrew Dean and Pakenham’s Steve Morey will have important roles to play this afternoon.

8

Nick Lang will need to lead from the front against Narre Warren today.

But it was goals to regular defenders in Ben King, Col McNamara and Ryan Quirk that probably gives a better indication as to how the Magpies are playing right now. They’re happy to share the load, and share the joy of playing some wonderful football that has been the clear bench-mark setter in 2018. King and McNamara have a renewed love for the Sherrin, while Shinners is joined by Jake Richardson and Trent Papworth in a very impressive big-man department. Papworth is one of the most improved players in the competition. A reserves player who dabbled in senior footy in the past, he returned to the club after a season away last year and has played 21 games of very good senior football. The ruck department has been an issue for the Magpies in recent times, but Shinners, Richardson and Papworth are very well equipped to take care of business in September. The Seagulls will have a red-hot crack in this one – but the Magpies will have an eight-to-10 goal margin at the final siren. And Pakenham will look to bounce back from a disappointing performance against Tooradin last week when the Lions welcome Leigh McQuillen and Beaconsfield to Toomuc Reserve. The Lions led by seven points at three-quarter time – 4.12 to 4.5 – but conceded six goals to two in the final term to terminate their finals chances for good.

www.aflsoutheast.com.au

Footy Preview Ash Green and his Lions are not in a position to be taking liberties on a footy field at the moment – and a slow start and bad kicking at goal cost them dearly against the Seagulls last week. And it probably cost them victory in the end! The Lions just couldn’t find consistent and reliable avenues to goal with Liam Tyrrell, Steve O’Bryan, Cooper Sheppard, Brett Kirkham and Adam Alberni all chipping in with one each. Tyrrell started at centre-half forward but had a bigger impact after half time once he was shifted into the ruck. Jimmy Harrison, Jordy Stewart and Steve Morey were terrific for the Lions last week and will be keen to match motors with the Eagles, who are coming off a 53-point victory over Officer. The big question heading into last week’s game was how the Eagles would cover the loss of champion big man Scott Meyer – who is out for the season with a broken leg. Lachie Morrish took on the centre-bounce duties for the Eagles, while Riley Welsh played a key role at the stoppages. The Eagles played a dour brand of footy in the first quarter against the Kangas, but opened things up after quarter time kicking 12 goals to five to run away with the contest. Riley Verbi was damaging up forward with four goals, while Taylor Joyce and Josh Dodsworth joined Nathan Langley in kicking two each. The Eagles are already locked away as a finalist this year, but need an impressive performance here – a head of a week off – to take some real confidence into their next two games against Berwick and Narre Warren. Pakenham will certainly be no pushover – they play their home ground well – but the Eagles have the talent to come away with a 23-point victory. Cranbourne and Doveton played their round 11 contest on June 9, with Cranbourne winning 35.21.231 to 3.2.20.

Footy Notes Berwick I dont think we have had a rain free home game yet and last Saturday was no exception. The rain poured down outside and unfortunatley inside the social rooms for most of the day. The weather though did not dampen the enthusiasm of the 40 coterie members in the new BIG BAD BIFFS COOLBREEZE Coterie Room with MCG style opening front windows. A great day well led by Rhys and the Coterie Team. Next day is the last home and away game V Narre. A big thankss to Greg Oliver, Master Chef for looking after the food and Vicki Trait who kept it up to the starving masses.(And ensuring Russ and I got some on the way through) Back to the football! Probably the best day of football for the year from a club perspective winning all 3 games against quality opposition. Great to see Mozza and Jordy back out there also. The day started with the 19s playing there best game of the year. With a few back this week the boys controlled most of the game and moved the ball like it was a dry weather day. Even Foss from the Piney said to the coaches you should be proud of yourselves. The reserves, one of the closest knot units I have seen kept doing what they do best and ground out a win for a well earned 4 points in non stop rain. Not pretty in the conditions but effective. In a reversal of last week where the rain started with the senior game this week the rain stopped. The ground was still wet but the conditions improved albeit at times windy. It was a super effort by every player. Some returning from injury and others from omission the week before, but all lifted in our most complete perfomance for the year to keep tough opposition to 2 goals. I was one very proud President. REMEMBER GUYS....Get those major draw tickets sold. And for those who want the MCG style windows or any other architectural windows at home then contact Dean Clavarino 0411-864-592

the seniors so far. Trent Shinners and Nick Scanlon also got 3. Even Benny King, Ryan Quirk and ColMac roamed forward for rare goals to the mirth of their teammates. Well done to Under 19 Brayden Sharp who put in a solid showing in his debut for the Ones. Narre’s Twos also had a big win against an undermanned opponent. All of Narre’s 22 shared the ball around in an even contribution. Mitch Dempster and Daniel Borninkhof kicked 3 each. Progress on our works at Fox Road has been steady and ongoing. Just a week or two now and we anticipate being fully operational in our new social club. At this stage we are optimistic to be training at Fox Road on Thursday 19 July (after our bye next week). So get down for dinner with our footballers and netballers, hear the team selections and take in our new surroundings as we gear up towards the business end of the season. Coming events – Saturday 4 August – Past Players Day (Home game v Cranbourne at Fox Road), followed by 10 year Reunion of Narre’s 2008 Senior Premiership team from 5.30 pm. More details soon. Narre Warren In Round 10 we travelled to Doveton and joined our hosts in celebrating local indigenous culture and to help raise awareness for the issues that indigenous people face daily. The night was cold, the football was onesided, and the results surely highlighted the virtues of a divisional football competition that now appears pretty certain for our clubs in 2019. If it reduces the incidence of lop-sided contests and blowout results like this one – it is certainly a plan worth pursuing. Our Ones were relentless in a 23-goal win, but the spirit and four-quarter effort shown by the Doveton playing group was outstanding. For Narre, Aaron Wilson kicked 5, Tommy Miller chimed in with 3 in his best game in

The 2015 Magpies finally break the drought By David Nagel Narre Warren’s first-ever A Grade premiership cup will be loved and cherished forever after the Magpies produced the supreme performance against Hampton Park on grand final day 2015. The Magpies took an already amazing level of netball to astronomical new heights, dismantling the Redbacks 59-34 in front of a bumper crowd at Officer’s Starling Road. It was a performance that left co-coach, and centre, Jade Heinrich almost speechless. “It’s hard to describe in words, to wok so hard and then play our best game of the season on the biggest day of the year is extremely satisfying,” Jade said. “Greg (Jade’s co-coach and husband) and I couldn’t be happier; I still can’t believe it to be honest.” Jade almost didn’t make it to the court, re-injuring her calf at training on Thursday night and spending Friday in a hyperbaric chamber. “I was a little overwhelmed at the finish, because I put myself under so much pressure to play, it all sort of caught up with me in the end.” The Magpies started brilliantly, and got better, extending a five-goal lead at quarter time to eight at the main break. But that was just the forerunner to a brilliant second half of netball where they outscored the Redbacks 34 to 17. “We lost to Hampton Park the last time we met but it was a good loss to have and that was the turning point for us,” Jade said. “We just didn’t perform that day, but the girls believed in the game plan and we delivered when it mattered.” Tracey Dell and Kara Hargrave, who are currently leading Seaford’s undefeated 2018 campaign in the MPNFL, were superb in defence, with Erin Clark and Leigh Taylor combining wonderfully well through the midcourt.

Elly Stewart and best-on-court medallist Tayla Shannon were unstoppable under the ring, while Chloe Phillips, Courtney Phelps and Demi Brettoner were rewarded with some precious court time in the last quarter. “I really admire those three girls,” Jade said. “They were just so happy and excited to get their chance and they were fantastic in those last 10 minutes of play.” Jade said the joy that the premiership had delivered to the club wasn’t lost on either her or Greg. “I’ve been to few clubs, but Narre warren is a special place,” she said. “The footballers were excited for us, the committee, it just makes Greg and I so happy to see so many people join in the celebrations.” For Clark, Taylor and Dell, the premiership win was extra special after losing the 2013 grand final to Pakenham. The Magpies, after all those years of trying, finally had a cup to love and to cherish.

A Grade Premiers Narre Warren, back from left; Jade Heinrich, Kara Hargrave, Tracey Dell, Courtney Phelps, Elly Stewart and Chloe Phillips. Front row; Leigh Taylor, Erin Clark, Tayla Shannon, Demi Brettoner and Greg Heinrich.

Narre Warren’s great escape It was the most bizarre and magical day in the 14-year history of the Casey Cardinia/South East Football Netball League – the day Narre Warren won the 2013 premiership by one point over its arch-rival Cranbourne. A Hollywood writer could not have scripted this… the way it all unfolded was almost unbelievable. Almost 50 years to the day since Steve McQueen rode off into the sunset, the Magpies produced their very own version of The Great Escape…to break records…and Cranbourne hearts. Six-points behind with just a minute left on the clock and with the ball at the wrong end of Toomuc Reserve, the Magpies somehow produced a miracle. A goal to Andrew Hunter levelled the scores, before a point with the last kick of the game from 19-year old Dylan Quirk left a huge crowd stunned. Quirk’s point gave the Magpies back-to-back Casey Cardinia league titles, a remarkable sixth premiership in eight years and for the first time in club history made them premiers and champions. The Magpies can also claim to be the greatest team in league history with their 36th win on the trot breaking a 108-year-old league record. They had a dominant season, but an average winning margin of 88 points counted for little when a courageous Cranbourne recovered from 38-points down, at the 16-minute mark of the second quarter, to hit the front in the dying stages.

Greatness…true greatness awaited both sides…Narre Warren out to break records while Cranbourne came within a whisker of pulling off the greatest upset in league history in coach Doug Koop’s last game at the helm, after being told he was no longer required for 2014. Narre Warren skipper Michael Collins was unbelievably proud of his team after the match. “They got on top and they were up and about, but somehow we just got over the line ... I still don’t know how we did it. The dynamics changed so quickly,” Collins said.

Narre Warren’s great escape “Cranbourne showed true spirit. That’s what they’re all about. I’ve played against blokes like Holty, Ray George and Justin Shields for years, that’s just the sort of guys they are, they keep grinding it out and they’ll do anything to win. “It’s going to be a great feeling over the next few days.” And the first player to engulf Quirk was full-forward Kerem Baskaya, who kicked his 100th goal in the bigdance and also made it back-to-back titles in his first two years at the club. Baskaya made his name at Hampton Park, but was lured to Narre Warren in 2012 by coach Chris Toner. “I’m lost for words, I honestly am,” Baskaya said before finding his range. “The resilience of this group, it’s just a delight to play for this club, and this team, honestly, it’s like winning the lotto. Two years ago I was questioning what I was going to do. Sava, (Chris Toner) I’m indebted to for the rest of my life because he gave us the chance and it’s just a dream. I have to pinch myself right now.” And what of the lowest-key, 100th-goal celebration in history? “Simple, we had bigger fish to fry. No-one gets together in 10 years for a reunion of who kicked 100 goals. I want to catch up with these guys in 10 years when I’m old and washed up and now we get to do it two years in a row.” It was an unbelievable and magical day of football.

Netball Preview Will the Seagulls finally get their wings clipped? By David Nagel The biggest challenge in the South East Football Netball League confronts Narre Warren today when the Magpies make the trip to Tooradin to take on the reigning champions and red-hot premiership favourites. We could add the word ‘undefeated’ to those two previous descriptions as well, with the Seagulls making one hell of a fist of their first premiership defence in a decade. The Seagulls brought in some wonderful talent for the 2016 season, with new-coach Kelly Andrews joined by Jess Maher and Emma Iacovou in lifting the Gulls to fifth place on the ladder. The hurt of a one-goal loss to Doveton in the elimination final stung the Seagulls badly, and lifted them to another gear last year. They brought in further talent for the 2017 season with Sara Duncan, Bec Kinna, Alex Maher and Jess Cox leading the Gulls into third position – and a total sweep of last year’s finals series. Tooradin defeated the Magpies twice in last year’s finals campaign, and proved it no fluke with a 17-goal victory in their only meeting in round six this year. The Seagulls are a gun side, with no weakness, with Tara Smith and Ebony Dolan joining the names mentioned earlier in the strongest squad in the competition. And they’re versatile too, with Jess Maher playing the first half as goalkeeper against Pakenham last week before spending the second half in centre. So how will the Magpies bring them down? Narre has some exceptional talent of its own with skipper Erin Clark coming off a best-on-court display against Doveton, while Caitlin Stephens, Brit Tyers and Caitlin Egan are starting to gel impressively as a defensive unit. Carly Stagg and Britt Mashado are tireless workers through the midcourt while Jemma Osborne and Chloe Phillips are capable of shooting a winning score against any opposition. The Magpies will need to stay in touch early, because the Seagulls are a great front-running side who very rarely give up an early lead. Clark will lead her girls from the front, she never fails to deliver – but the Gulls are too hot right now and will walk away with a six-goal victory. The ROC Netball Club will find itself back in the top five by late this afternoon if the Kangaroos can overcome Berwick at Starling Road. With Doveton sitting idle, having already played its round-11 clash against Cranbourne, the Kangas just need to win to leapfrog the Doves into fifth place.

There’s never an easy ball with Bec Kinna around, just ask Pakenham’s Taylor Dykstra after last week’s game against Tooradin

ROC will come in supremely confident too, after a thrilling last-quarter charge ended just one goal short of victory against Beaconsfield last week. Trailing by three goals at the last break, the Kangaroos scored 13-11 to fall agonisingly short - and by the narrowest of margins. Sam Neil set the scene with a great last quarter in centre, while Sidney Kneebone connected well with Dorothea George in the ring. Laura Quinn, Jamilah Ferns and Alisha Young defended with great intent for the Kangas, who will expect nothing less than victory against the Wickers today. Berwick played an awesome first quarter against Cranbourne last week, but just couldn’t sustain that intensity for much longer. Kassidy Withers and Emma Clarke had the radar dialled in early, while Jaime Cotter played a great game through the midcourt. The Wickers will test the Kangaroos – but will fall short by 10-12 goals.

Netball Preview And Beaconsfield will to consolidate second position on the ladder when it travels to Toomuc Reserve to take on Pakenham. The Eagles currently sit half a game clear of Narre Warren, but with the Magpies taking on the might of Tooradin today the gap could widen somewhat. The Eagles were pushed to the brink by ROC last week, but class acts like Kaela Hughes, Dani Cameron and Bianca Sanzaro put their experience to good use to snuff out the Kangaroos challenge. Abbie Sheers has been a great foil for Cameron, while Rylee Nelson and Ash Gill have given Hughes great support through the middle. Pakenham certainly wasn’t disgraced against Tooradin last week, outscoring the Seagulls 11-5 in the second quarter after a horrible start to the match. Bec Langford, Jenna Douglas and Cath McCowan really dug deep for the Lions in the second term and will need to reproduce those heroics if the Lions are to get across the line. But the Eagles will win and basically lock away second place on the ladder.

Alex Maher had the radar dialled in against the Lions at Tooradin at last week.

Netball Notes Beaconsfield A GRADE - Our second hit out with ROC was just as exciting as the first, both sides tussling for the lead. Our side struggled to control the ball in the wet and against the tough defence of ROC,with a high number of errors. However our defence through the whole court stood up,as the girls showed courage in the wet,Danielle was outstanding turning over the ball countless times, with Abbie her partner in crime. It all came down to the last minute where captain Kaela hunted down an extraordinary ball to regain possession and get us the one goal win. Awards:Danni,Abbie & Tanya B GRADE - The heavens opened up to start our game against ROC.In wet conditions the girls started well with a 3goal lead. This was whittled down however by strong attacking by ROC.Beacy would continue to play catch up,never able to fully bring in the Roos lead.A mighty finish in the third had Beacy hit the lead by 1goal.The challenge for the girls in the last was to play with confidence and purpose. From the start of the 4th,the girls piled on pressure, creating turnovers and safe conversions in attack. The girls ended the game on a strong 7goal win. Awards:Jordan,Tenielle & Ebony C GRADE - After battling with extremely wet conditions for all four quarters, unfortunately ROC managed to get the better of us.Looking forward to a full strength side for next week. D GRADE - We headed down to ROC this week in horrible conditions, thinking the rain might stop before it was our turn to take the court but no,it turned torrential. But our girls put that behind them and went out and played 4 quarters of netball that displayed control, court balance and defensive pressure, and showed improvement within their set structures. With some players away this week,we really showed the depth we have to cover those losses. Thanks to Chloe for playing, you did a great job and displayed great confidence after being thrown into goals at the last minute.Great win girls. U17 WHITE - Beacy went down to ROC by 5.Unfortunately missing two key players, our team did not perform to our usual standards. In saying that, the team played a well fought match and did not give up.Every contest was tough and they did not let ROC have it easy.A couple of young guns stepped up from Under 15s and played really well. Awards:Chelsea,Chloe & Millie U15 RED - The 15 Reds were again short on goalers, but still made a game of it against ROC.The final score did not compliment the pressure both teams maintained throughout the game. The Beacy defenders in Maddi,Jemima and Tiahn made many intercepts and did a great job bringing the ball into the centre third. The centre court players,Ariah,Abbey and Tahlia kept offering leads and did their best to create open space.Millie again worked hard in GA and worked well in the second half with Eliza, who held her spot to allow the attackers to feed the ball in with more ease. The final quarter, where Beacy out

34

scored ROC,showed what they can produce.Hopefully with a full team from now, this is what we are looking forward to seeing consistently for the remainder of the season. Awards:Tahlia,Maddi & Jemima U13 RED - A wet start to the day at ROC,the conditions weren’t great, but the girls came out firing. Our defensive pressure was great, creating plenty of turnovers and for most part,we capitalised on the hard work with smart play & great goaling. The girls played a positive game today, encouraging and getting around each other.I made a few positional changes, the girls adapted well and made the most it with great connections down the court, balance and control. Awards:Paige,Kyana & Ella U13 WHITE - In cold, wet slippery conditions down at ROC today, the girls were determined from the very start after a draw last time we met. They were switched on from the first whistle, and played a short, well controlled game. Everyone did their bit,all over the court, and contributed to the 10goal win.Its great watching these girls improve every single week as we head into finals. Awards:Miller,Ellie & Millie

Berwick 13 Reds - Today we came out and put up a hard battle, showing we deserved the win as they worked hard and played well as a team. The game was clean and controlled compared. Happy with the teams attitude and adjustments to the changes made. We are gaining very strong little champions can’t wait to see the rest of the season. Time to show that we’ve got our eyes on the prize and we want to stick it till the very end of the season. BOC-Abbey 15 Whites - The girls had a hard game this week with the elements not in favour for our game plan. We will work hard in the remaining weeks, with new and old strategies mixed to come together for finals. You never gave up very proud of you !

Netball Notes 15 reds had a tough day all round with the inclement weather we hadn’t seen so far this season. It was a close match with goal for goal in the first half. We were pushed and they fought back, falling a little short. This game was an experience for all players with lessons learnt and new strategies to practice and implement in the coming weeks. 17 white- This was one of the most consistent games played this season. Positive attitudes and laughter prior to the game, led to the girls fantastic relaxed first quarter as a team ! They worked hard for each other and fought to the end. Special mention and big thank you to Holly and Elliott for taking the court for us today. We take a lot from today’s game, and look forward to the rest of the season with confidence. BOC Simone Green. 17 Reds - With three of our regular team away, we fought hard to level at half time but a 7-3 goal 3rd qtr had them chasing to reduce the gap in last qtr. It was too difficult losing the game by 5 goals. With school holidays this will give the time for all athletes to refresh and prepare for the last part of the season. Hayley Alman BOC D Grade started off strong being equal in the first quarter. With lapses in concentration and some accurate shooting from Cranbourne in the wet conditions saw the lead outstretched. Defensively we were very strong

across the court, special mention to Shannon Sutherland awarded BOC, who had never played netball before this season. Well done to the team progress thus far, let’s finish the season strong. C Grade - With the weather and odds against us, this was going to be a tough game and the girls definitely came ready to play. Our focus has been to use our channels, multiple leads to the ball and have fun, we ticked all of those boxes and got the win to a team we previously lost to by 20 goals! It was such a great feeling as a coach to see every single player contribute hugely and play an amazing game together with laughter and smiles at games end ! Special mention to Hayley and JP who both played an amazing in goals together to get us the win. B grade - Fantastic defence and attack to goal conversion in transition gave B grade their first win. They have been so close that it was only time. Awesome effort by all players. Larri Alman lead her team so well being so sick she still pulled out a best of court performance. Special mention to Joyce playing on a hugely swollen ankle A grade - Again inconsistent performance and absence of three of the regular team coughed up another loss. Some great goaling by Kassidy Withers when the opportunity presented. Best on court for her relentless attack went to Jaime Cotter. Heading to next week let’s rebound and nudge closer to a win. Or a best on court performance at cocktail party.

Netball Notes Tooradin-Dalmore

Despite the wet and cold conditions, it was still a great day of netball when we welcomed Pakenham to the club on Saturday. It was our third clash against the Lions for the season, with some tough games out on court. Our four senior sides all had good wins, with A-Grade much happier with their game than the last time they played Pakenham. B-Grade had another close game, with all three encounters against Pakenham going down to the wire. The girls put in a great team effort to hold onto their lead and finish with a three-goal win. C-Crade had a convincing win and are really hitting their straps and gelling more and more each week as a team, and the same could be said for D-Grade. These teams copped the worst of the wet weather, and adapted well to the conditions, with both teams playing steady and patient netball. Unfortunately, our junior sides didn’t get any wins on the day, but we have to make special mention to the 15s Red team who only just went down by one goal. This team has come close on a few occasions and played some really good netball on Saturday, and we’re confident they’ll get a win on the board before the season’s end. Also, well done to Makayla DaRose who clocked her 50th game for the club on Saturday. A couple of dates to note: • Saturday 28th July: This round will be our Sponsors Day, where we get to show our appreciation for our amazing sponsors who provide us with support and make it possible so we can all go out and enjoy netball each week. If you’ve got a player sponsor, we ask that you invite your sponsor along for the afternoon. This round will also be our Junior Round, with all senior players expected to come along early and watch our young Gulls in action! • Friday 21 September: Save the date, as this will be our Senior Presentation Night, at the Tooradin Sports Club. Further details will come later in the season. This week we look forward to welcoming Narre Warren to our courts, which is sure to be a tough day out for our teams and there will be some strong, competitive netball on show. GO SEAGULLS!!

ROC Thanks Beaconsfield for a fantastic day of Netball at Officer. I hope everyone that got saturated has had a chance to dry everything out.. what a delight outdoor winter sport is! Wow! Didn’t the A graders put on a performance to cap the day off. What a match with an equally thrilling

score line. We didn’t get the 4 points this time but the girls can walk away knowing they had a decent crack. Congratulations to Dotti who played her first A Grade game for ROC after several years at the club. She slotted in and did a great job in GS. Netball Notes Narre Warren It was a long day for the netballers this week as we helped celebrate the Indigenous round with Doveton. The first ball was thrown at 8.50am and the last at 7.30pm! Thanks to the players, committee and spectators who were there from start to finish. Your support is amazing! #buyin2018 U13 White: NW 39 def Doveton 0 Strong win in very wet conditions today. Great sportsmanship shown by our girls against an undermanned Doveton team. Girls were played in different positions and showed good versatility. Well Done Girls. U13 Red: NW 55 def Doveton 1 Thanks girls for putting yourselves out there today in the wet. Everyone played well and to the conditions, backing each other up, even though some were out of their usual position. Tamika was accurate as well as getting some intercepts. Our feeders passed in well. And Annie was able to use her height in goals for a change. Well done girls! U15 White: NW 21 def Doveton 17 The girls did a fantastic job again this week. They came away with a great win in freezing conditions. Well done girls! U15 Red: Doveton 28 def NW 9 Disappointing performance in a very wet, cold game. To Doveton’s credit they played really well in the rain, and we struggled to use the ball effectively. Some good patches of play, just wasn’t our day. Awards to Mikayla, Holly R and Lainey U17 White: NW 28 def Doveton 21 Another tough game in trying conditions between two finals contenders. A strong all round team performance was able to see the team creep ahead by a goal or two each quarter to take the points on the day. It was hard to select our best players due to a strong all round performance; awards to, Rylee, Amy and Jaimee U17 Red: Doveton 23 def NW 19 In a physical hard fought match, the girls played extremely well holding their heads high and playing their own game. Great team game, going down by 4 goals. D Grade: Doveton 31 def NW 19 Was always going to be a tough game against top of the table Doveton today & the weather didn’t make that any easier. We worked well in patches but just need to continue working on the consistency. Great to have Shannae back and one step closer to being a full team for the first time in many weeks! Thanks to Amy & Cailie for helping out, special mention to Caitlyn, Sim & Georgia for great games. C Grade: NW 43 def Doveton 18 C Grade started on the front foot today, working tirelessly down the court. Liv and Kacey fitted in to the team really well and there was great defensive pressure by everyone. BOC Kacey Maund and Zoe Dunkley and $5 to each player for great team work. B Grade: Doveton 52 def NW 49

In shocking conditions B grade went down by 3 goals. With 2 defenders out, room was made for Alex (C grade) and Taylah (U17 red) to step up. Both girls playing a sterling game well done and thank you. Well done B grade on a great team effort. Congratulations to Doveton on a wonderful Indigenous Round, only wish the weather was better for you. A Grade: NW 41 def Doveton 32 Great team effort this week! We stuck to our game plan, backed one another and came away with a good win in

very ordinary conditions! Congratulations to Erin for being voted best on court by the umpires and receiving the Glenda Charles Medal. Thanks to game day sponsors: Shanikas, Ghost Gum Cabinets, Fountain Panels, #Narre Love, Shinners Plumbing, Mollys Bricklaying, JQ Plastering, Subway, De Hann, Simpson, Urwin and Lang families

Pakenham For Round 11 we have some wonderful milestones to celebrate as we welcome Beaconsfield to our club. Heartfelt congratulations to Emma Jones on your 100th game and to Sienna Jude and Carly Saunders on your 50th games. Awesome work ladies! Super proud of your achievements! In April 2017, a member of our netball family, Charlene Rich and her family experienced the devastating loss of their beloved husband and father, Ken Rich in a tragic accident. Ken was killed while riding his bike in Pakenham. Ken was a massive supporter of Charlene and her netball! Charlene is passionate about educating road users about keeping it safe for bike riders and spreading the word ‘metre matter’ rule. We are proud to be supporting her together with the Footy club for the Amy Gillett Foundation Fundraising day being held Round 12, Saturday 21st July, Pakenham vs Narre Warren. Charlene together with her brother Brandon who plays footy for Paky have put together an amazing day and we invite all members of both clubs to come together to support this event. An afternoon tea has been arranged to commence at 3.30 pm upstairs and entry is by gold coin donation. Guest speakers have been arranged. Victorian Police will be attending to spread the word on road safety. Raffles has been arranged. Our club is honoured to be part of this important fundraising event.

SEWF Report Devils downed for the first time By Lachie Ramage

An action-packed round eight in SEWF had it all - from the upset of the year in Division One to a thrilling draw in Division Three. Going into the clash between two undefeated teams in Division One, Seaford and Eastern Devils, we expected an extremely tight contest, and it didn’t let us down one little bit. The game was an arm wrestle from start to finish, and with the Eastern Devils holding a one-point advantage at half time the game was set to ramp up from there, with the scores sitting at 1.2.8 to 1.1.7. From there the Tigers stepped up in the third quarter to kick two goals to one to hold a seven-point lead going into the final break. The Tigers ended up holding on by that margin to score their most important victory for the season. Cranbourne 6.4.40 got the points over Beaconsfield 2.1.13, whilst the St Kilda Sharks continued their push up the ladder with a strong win over Chirnside Park by 53 points. Port Melbourne 10.15.75 defeated Endeavour Hills 3.2.20 in a one-sided affair, where Bronte James kicked four goals, whilst Mornington cruised to a 96-point victory over the Gippsland Maroons, with forward Emily Rylance starring with five goals. In Division Two we saw Tyabb keep Edi-Asp scoreless and kicking 3.9.27 themselves to win a low scoring contest. Seaford continued its good form as the Tigers defeated Warragul by 65 points in a one-sided affair where Michelle Pensley and Lauren Field combined for 10 of the Tigers 12 goals. Cranbourne managed to notch up a win over the St Kilda Sharks, winning 4.3.27 to 1.2.8 to move closer to the top four. If the can Eagles can keep winning the sides sitting in there will start to feel shaky. Bass Coast continued its unbeaten form with a 13-point victory over a competitive Eastern Devils. In Division Three, Mornington 4.6.30 managed a 23-point victory over the last-placed Pakenham, but the Lions certainly weren’t afraid of taking the challenge up to the team sitting second on the ladder. With more efforts like this we could see the Lions start to be competitive and even win games each week. The eighth-placed Officer took on the undefeated Hastings in what looked set to be an easy day for the Blues going in to the match, but little did they know they were about to experience the biggest challenge of their season. Hastings kicked one goal and had Officer goalless at quarter time but things changed in the second quarter as scores were level at half time. From there the Kangaroos kicked the only goal in the third quarter to lead by that margin at three-quarter time.

38

From there, that’s when the game got really interesting, the upset of the season was brewing. But as a top team does the Blues found a way to grind out a draw. Officer will take a lot out of this match and look to build on this performance for the weeks ahead. Karingal defeated Crib Point by 14 points; whilst the Frankston Bombers made light work of Seaford, keeping them scoreless and going on to win by 64 points. Pearcedale will no doubt have some goal kicking to do at training this week as they scored 10.23 in their 82-point victory over Red Hill. PREVIEW: In Division One this week we see the third-placed Mornington take on fifth-placed Cranbourne in a game that will turn out to be crucial for ladder positions later on in the season. In Division Two, Eastern Devils and Cranbourne face off in a near identical clash, which will be absolutely pivotal for both teams as they look to push a strong case for finals. In Division Three we have a top-of-the-table clash between Mornington and Hastings in a game where the winner will take top spot and be favourite heading into finals later on the year. We also have a bottom-of-the-ladder clash between Red Hill and Pakenham, with one of these teams to experience the absolute joy of winning their first game for the season.
