PROUD PARTNERS OF

AFL South East It’s all happening in SEFNL Everyone is busy these days but sometimes it’s just nice to sit back for a minute and take into consideration the things that are happening around you. Right now, there is so much happening in local football and netball. Finals venues were recently announced for SEFNL for the 2018 season with Beaconsfield, Berwick and Pakenham now feverishly working away to provide the perfect canvas for the showcase games of the season. At the same time those clubs are also preparing for their futures, with the demise of SEFNL seeing all eight clubs having made decisions on where their futures lay in 2019. As deadlines draw nearer, clubs have been working hard behind the scenes to make sure those decisions at club level now come to fruition. Clubs from AFL South East’s two senior bodies – SEFNL and MPNFL – have also been working hard on a community front. Today in the MPNFL is “It’s Okay, Not to be Okay” Round, with the round aiming to promote awareness around suicide prevention within our football and netball clubs and right across the broader community.

It’s Okay, Not to be Okay was formed by the Hocking family in May 2016, when the family tragically lost their son and brother Ben to suicide at the age of 22. One minute he was watching a movie on the couch with his older sister, the next minute gone, ripped from his families lives, and from their futures forever. This is why they started It’s Okay, Not to be Okay. Understanding that there is always someone who cares, and is there to support, is essential. SEFNL clubs will have their chance to support a great cause when they get behind White Ribbon Round on the final home-and-away day of the season. The aim of White Ribbon is to encourage a nation that respects women, in which every woman lives in safety, free from all forms of men’s abuse. And now to the sporting fields. It’s been an interesting week of comparison, with youngsters from the right across the AFLSE region being selected in V/Line squads – the biggest indication for 15 and 16 year old’s that their footy careers are on track. Players from Beaconsfield to Sorrento will come together as one over the next two months and prepare to take on the best from around the state. And then we have one man, at a different stage of his career, about to chalk up a remarkable career highlight. Cranbourne champion Marc Holt said this after his 200th game for the club in August 2015. “The personal milestones are motivating, but they’re not everything and they’re just the by-product of playing in a good team and being successful. Seriously, if I stop enjoying my footy I don’t care if I end up on 999 goals at the end of my career.” Well, Holty, you are on 999 goals, and after a tumultuous week require just one goal against Officer, coached by one of your great mentors in Doug Koop, to bring up a wonderful achievement in your career.

“Melbourne's Pie King”

Well done Marc Holt…we salute you!

AFL Vic Country Recognition long overdue for volunteers Volunteers are the lifeblood of the game, keeping clubs right across the AFL South East Region ticking over with their mighty and unheralded efforts. But they are unheralded no longer. The AFL Volunteer of the Year Program is a volunteer recognition program which commenced as part of the Australian Football 150-year celebration, rewarding seven outstanding volunteers with a trip of lifetime for them and a partner. Leagues and Clubs across the state were encouraged to nominate outstanding volunteers for the AFL State/ Territory Volunteer of the Year, for their tireless work and contribution to the community. The volunteer may have contributed to the completion of a major or significant project throughout the year or they may be someone who has contributed in a number of roles over a long period of time.

The 2018 State/ Territory Volunteer of the Year winner will receive a host of amazing prizes, including: • 2 x tickets and an AFL Grand Final Experience at the Toyota AFL Grand Final •

2 x return flights (except Victoria) & accommodation for 3 nights (Thurs – Sat) in Melbourne for Grand Final weekend.

The opportunity to walk in the Toyota AFL Grand Final Parade.

The Community Club belonging to the State/Territory Volunteer of the Year winner will also receive free membership to the Coach.AFL platform for all their Coaches in season 2019 Winners of the 2018 AFL Volunteer of the Year award will be announced on the AFL Victoria website and social media channels later in the year. Sarah Bodycombe won the 2017 Volunteer of the Year Award in the Nepean League.

Each State and Territory will evaluate the nominations and ultimately will determine their State/Territory Volunteer of the Year based on the following criteria. Selection criteria: 1. Must have given notable voluntary service to Australian Football. 2. Must be a willing, voluntary contributor, having received no income from football (NB honoraria excepted). 3. Must be an ambassador for the game of football who acts and works for the best interest of the game, never bringing the game into disrepute. 4. Those making nominations should make no more than one nomination. 5. Years of service will be looked upon favourably. 6. Previous winners are ineligible.

Shona Wells won the 2017 Volunteer of the Year Award in SEFNL.

Footy Preview Holt set for an amazing milestone By David Nagel The tumultuous week of Cranbourne superstar Marc Holt is set to end on a high with the champion sharpshooter on the brink of an amazing milestone against Officer at Casey Fields today. The heart and soul of Cranbourne had little reason to celebrate his 33rd birthday on Tuesday, suspended for six weeks for two alleged incidents that occurred in the round-10 clash against Berwick. But just 24 hours later, after a successful appeal, Holt was freed to play and will take his place in the goal-square against the Kangaroos today. The man with the best hands in country football needs just one more goal this afternoon to take his senior career tally to 1000. His highlights are never ending. His best years came between 2011 and 2014 where he kicked 87, 157, 118 and 103 goals, and also captained the Eagles to a drought-breaking premiership victory over Narre Warren. In 2012 he kicked 22 goals in a game against Hampton Park, then kicked 11 in the preliminary final against Tooradin and signed off with an eight-goal haul in a losing grand final against the Magpies. We could just go on and on and on. His 2013-14 interleague campaigns were quite incredible, bringing Horsham City Oval to its feet with a seven-goal clinic against Wimmera, before slamming through eight against Bellarine in a memorable performance at Simmonds Stadium. But we’ll save the full glossary of details for post career… because right now the Eagles have a game to win. The Eagles showed their full capacity against Tooradin at their last run from a spell, booting 11 goals in a mesmerising third-quarter performance that led to an 88-point victory. Holt kicked seven, Nathan Gardiner four, while Kirk Dickson and Shaun Marusic kicked five between them in two impressive displays through the midfield. Ryan Jones is having possibly the best season of his career, while Luke Bee-Hugo and Ryan Davey will be keen to impress on such a massive day for the club.

Cranbourne champion Marc Holt looks set for a career highlight against Officer today. Officer coach Doug Koop will be as proud as punch today, with the former Cranbourne mentor being one of the biggest influences in Holt’s wonderful career. They were coach and captain in the 2011 premiership success, and shared the pain of two further grand final defeats before Koop was moved on at the end of 2013. Koop, and his long-time assistant Billy King, worked hard on Holt’s goal-kicking which was a little wayward in the early part of his career. Koopy will be one of the first men to shake Holt’s hand this afternoon. Officer has its own gun-forward back for the big occasion, with Matty Clarke booting four against Doveton in his first run back since the interleague game against AFL Yarra Ranges. He shared the stage with Holt that day and will do so again, although on opposite sides this time around!

7

Footy Preview Will Hanson had a day out, booting six, while Ben Tivendale - the Kangaroos veteran who has seen Holt at his finest over the years - continues to play some terrific footy in the twilight years of his career. But today, well it’s all about one man. Expect Holt to kick 10 and the Eagles to win by plenty. It won’t take centre stage, but the game between Narre Warren and Beaconsfield will be a high-quality affair at Kalora Park today. The Magpies were wildly inaccurate against Pakenham last week, but were still far too good, while the Eagles had one of their best results for the year in a 17-point loss to Berwick. The Magpies are home and hosed in top spot, two games and 35 percent better than any other team in the competition. Normally those sorts of margins would indicate red-hot favouritism for the premiership, but the quality of Berwick and Cranbourne has this year’s title race still well and truly open. It’s hard to believe the Magpies haven’t won a flag since 2013. They’re always in contention, with absolute superstars of the game in Michael Collins and Nick Scanlon driving a high standard across the board as they look for their seventhpremiership success. The return of premiership-winning teammates Brad Scalzo and Trent Shinners has given the Magpies an edge in class, while five-time premiership winner Col McNamara is having a season out of the box. Good luck Beaconsfield…this is the most difficult trip in SEFNL right now. But the Eagles will come in confident after Taylor Joyce kicked five, Riley Verbi three, and Ryan Bromley, Jake Bowd and Matt Homfray hit top form against the Wickers last week. The Eagles are still a little off the pace, but a repeat competitive performance against the best team in the competition will hold Leigh McQuillen and his boys in good stead for a solid finals campaign. But Collins, Scanlon and McNamara can almost smell another title, the sweetest yet after a longer than expected wait, and will take nothing for granted when the ball gets bounced at 2.10 this afternoon. It’s the Magpies by 23 points. Berwick coach Stewie Kemperman has been around the blocks a few times and will have his team super-vigilant when the Wickers welcome Pakenham to Edwin Flack Reserve today. It’s not the four points that Kemperman will be too concerned about, the Wickers have a clear class edge over their rivals, but more the method in how they get the job done. The Wickers have a three-week patch against the Lions, Tooradin and Doveton where it would be very easy for some bad habits to creep in. You know the story; the scoreboard looks impressive and players start to remove themselves from the structures that work against the better teams in the competition. It’s just being human after all.

8

Six-time premiership winner Nick Scanlon is craving another success. But Kemperman won’t settle for that, especially with the opportunity to win back-to-back flags in his first two years as a senior coach. He also some tremendously consistent players to lead the way with Madi Andrews, Travis Tuck, Bryce Rutherford, Ash Smith and Michael Riseley driving some very high standards at Edwin Flack. Harry Money is not overly tall is stature, but has led the forward line with class, while Jordy Andrews, Jimmy Magner and Andrew Morozoff are getting better and better after long stints out of the senior team. The Lions certainly have their hands full today. The Lions dodged bullet after wayward bullet against Narre Warren last week, who kicked 14.28 in a 75-point victory over Ash Green and his boys. The Lions were helpless, completely at the mercy of the Magpies who kicked 4.10 in the second term and 1.7 in the third. That’s 5.17 in two quarters of footy, one of the more remarkably inaccurate performances of recent times. Jake Barclay continued to impress for the Lions, while Jo Baker-Thomas kicked two and Tyler Guan, Zac Stewart, Cooper Sheppard and Jimmy Harrison all had their moments in the sun. The Lions, despite winning just four games, are still a chance to play finals and will be keen to take some momentum into next week’s massive home clash against Officer. Win that and they’re a massive chance of making it to the big stage! But the four points will allude them today…it’s Berwick by 39 points. Tooradin-Dalmore welcomes Doveton to Westernport Oval today with the Seagulls having some good news to share with their supporters. Popular senior coach Lachie Gillespie has been reappointed for the 2019 season and will lead the Seagulls into their new frontier.

www.aflsoutheast.com.au

Footy Preview The Gulls are keen to make West Gippsland football their home next season and Gillespie’s appointment will give them some real stability as they look to find their feet in their new home. We saw the best and worst of the Seagulls in their last outing against Cranbourne, pushing the premiership contender in the first half before falling off the perch after half time. The Seagulls kicked five goals to four in the second term to trail by nine points at the main break, with Brad Lenders, Nick Lang, Paddy Chin and the speedy Cameron Brown taking right up to a quality opponent. Brown, Lang and Jason Kestle were giving the Eagles muchvaunted defence some trouble, while Jordan Kelly and Kris Sabbatucci were also in the thick of the contest. But then…well the wheels fell off! The Eagles kicked 11.4 to 1.1 in the third quarter, doing some serious damage to the Seagulls percentage and ending any faint chance of playing finals. The Seagulls will banking on the likes of Jake O’Donnell, Andrew Dean, Dylan Wilson, Michael Hobbs and Nick Schumann to set the standard today against the Doves. Doveton has just been too easy to score against, with teams averaging more than 130 points against them this season. The Seagulls are the next worst on that list, but perform 33 points better than the Doves on a weekly basis. Doveton knew the pain was coming after a big clean out in the pre-season and have no other choice now but to remain patient with a very young and talented list of players. It’s been a while since the Doves had a young group come through – and that creates some excitement for the future. Matt Stapleton and Brad O’Brien kicked three and two goals respectively against Officer last time out, while Jake Basa, Beau Anthony and Malis Lokeron are offering great support to experienced players like Russ Gabriel and Matt Jameson. The Doves will be eyeing this one off as a potential win, but will need to keep searching after the Seagulls salute by 23 points.

Footy Notes Berwick Back to Beacy again last week with a feeling of Deja Vu with us being there only 4 weeks ago. At least this time the rain stayed away and we watched some good dry weather football. The 19s started the day in a game I consider one of the best under 19 games I had seen. Only problem is we went down by 8 points the the undefreated Beacy team. We are getting closer each time we play though. The reserves scored an easy win with Jamo claiming goal of the year with a wobbly mongrel from the boundary on the run....well sort of run, it was Jamo afterall. The seniors dominated the game for the most part and in the end finished with only 16 fit players. We went into 3/4 time 40 points up and in the end held off a fast finishing youthful Beaconsfield Team to retain ther Frank Elliot shield and Battle of the Creek Cup. Gutsy work in the end. Sunday saw our major raffle get taken out by Breeny, one of our sponsors. Great work Trent and Co for doing a great job. Its great to see the players stand up and take responsibility for their club, very heartening and makes me realise the club is in good hands well after us old blokes have gone. Big thanks to Vicki who managed the kitchen on her own all day. This week we have the sposnors day in the main rooms and the Berwick Cricket Club in the coterie room. Welcome everyone and I hope you enjoy a great day. To the players please ensure you get around the sponsors after the game.

Narre Warren Narre travelled to Pakenham last week and came away with solid wins in all three footy games. In the Ones, some uncharacteristic inaccuracy by Narre’s attack (14.28) delivered a win by 11 goals against a speedy Pakenham side with their tails up after their previous-round win over Beaconsfield. Despite our poor kicking, particularly in the second quarter, 42 scoring shots will win you most games against most opponents. And we saw some great Narre play around the ground through the dominance our on-ballers led by Trent Papworth, Brad Scalzo and Trent Cody. Tommy Miller (4 goals) continues to step up as a key player in this side, and Collo’s influence on games over the past month suggests he will again be leading from the front at the business end of the season. The Ressies match was played in Narre’s forward half and there seemed little a stacked Pakenham defence could do to quell our many avenues to goal. Mitch Cowan, Mitch Tonna and Brooksy shared 10 goals between them; Daniel Jackson’s pack marking was a highlight; while Cam Miller, Kyle Graham and Hayden Johnson all continued their top mid-season form. The Under 19s saw a one-sided 25-goal Narre win as we kept Pakenham goalless. A plethora of Narre goal-

kicking options overwhelmed our opponent’s defence – Ashton Williamson with 5, Big Max with 4, Jack Flannery with 4 and Kyle Grigg with 4 were our main goal-scorers finishing off the slick ball movement up the ground by Jake Stuart, Dylan Mutimer and Mat Butera. Coming events As our players and coaches in all three grades prepare their bodies and minds for the run home to the finals, there’s plenty going on in our new social club over the coming weeks, and we want all our members and supporters to get around the club and come and enjoy the new facilities. Saturday, 4 August (home game v. Cranbourne) is Past Players Day where old friendships are rekindled over a few drinks and a chance to retell old stories and relive past glories. The day will be capped off post-match with the 10-year Reunion of Narre’s 2008 Premiership team from 6.00 pm. All members and supporters welcome. Sunday 5 August NWFNC is our Major Raffle Draw, 1pm to 5pm. $6,000 first prize. Tix $100 include function with beer, wine, food and entertainment. Contact Hayden James for tickets 0400 020370. Saturday 11 August from 1.00 pm. Home game v Officer is VIP Day where we host our sponsors, volunteers, affiliate Junior Football Club committees and local politicians on whose support we depend throughout each season. Many have had a hand in our club redevelopment and this will be a great opportunity to showcase the final product. Saturday 18 August. 7.30 pm. Narre Night – always a big social night for our footballers and netballers and their friends. Sure to be bigger than ever in our new function room. Feature sponsor is Ramsey Civil – thanks for your generous support for our Club, particularly our Over 35s.

Footy Notes Cranbourne Off another bye due to the split round, we can now look forward to the final four rounds of the year as we look to have three teams represent us in September. Against Tooradin for seemingly the final time last game, we were treated to another fine winters day at Casey Fields. The 19s kicked the day off against an undermanned but determined Tooradin side. We flew out of the blocks in a discipline showing in the first quarter kicking eight goals to one and from there we never looked back. By half time we lead by 83 points on a beautiful morning for footy. By ¾ time we 114 points ahead and the key now was to remain disciplined and not get goal hungry in order to boost some percentage and more importantly finish this game off positively. And we did just that kicking 6.0 in the final term to run out by 137-point victors. Best was clear as Corey Ellison snagged 10, while receiving great support form Coops, Luca, Jesse, Owen and Cav. The twos were next in a game against a side that pushed us in the last battle to a one goal win. This time we appeared a lot better prepared and willing to do the correct things as our side edges ever closer to another finals berth. A 16-point lead at the first break, 26 at the main and 40 at the final break showed that we were consistently doing the right things and now it just up to the boys to finish the game off. While we barely outscored them, we were disciplined and committed for the final term as we were good enough to run out 44-point winners. Best were Lewi, Richo, Russo N. Koey, Chace and Cav. There was really only one point of interest in this game and it was whether the Big Fella would kick eight to register his 1000th senior club goal. To Tooradin’s credit, they could sense we may have been a little distracted by the big moment and jumped out of the blocks early to kick the first two goals of the match. After that we steadied and got ourselves back in to the game leading by 15 points by ¼ time. Holt 1. By halftime and Tooradin was well in the game trailing us by nine points in a fantastic seesawing game. Holty couldn’t get in to the contest and failed to trouble the scorers again up until the half. Now, if ever there was relativity between the score and a man of Marc’s ability in a game, then this was it. As we started getting our hands on the ball some more, the big fella started coming in to the game and was catching everything coming his way. The fact that we piled on 11 goals in the third and he kicked five of those proves the relevance of the above point of relativity. So all of a sudden the chase to 1000 was back on as only two goals were needing in the final term. So what we found out is something we weren’t fully aware of….he is human after

all!! After kicking an early one in the last, it was clearly only a matter of time before the magical 1000 came up……so we thought. Two missed set shots and now we have to wait……..until when at the time of writing is anyone’s guess. Milestone This week marks Anthony Vella’s 100th senior/reserve game at the club. Vel of course won our club B&F in our 2016 premiership season and he would have played a few more for us but given he is on Port Melbourne’s list, has meant today is his 100th. Congratulations Vel! Upcoming Events Empire Night Tonight is CFC Player and Members only night. Must add your name to the list in the social rooms. Limit of 80 people. Pakenham Seniors 21.07.2018 Pakenham vs Narre Warren After a competitive half of football against a red hot Narre Warren outfit, we were simply outclassed losing by a disappointing 75 points. To compound the loss, we only finished the game with 19 fit players after losing a couple of key players by half time, but credit to the boys, they fought the game out as best they could. Best players on the day were Jake Barclay, Tyler Guan, Zac Stewart, Joe Baker-Thomas (kicked 2 goals) and Jimmy Harrison. Once again, many thanks to our loyal supporters & sponsors and we look forward to your continued support. Reserves Under 19’s PFC Senior Women’s Team Tonight we had the pleasure of playing after our senior team in which is a fantastic initiative by the league and club so the girls can experience what it’s like to play in front of a good crowd with support. Last time when we played Pearcedale we lost to them by 131 points in round 2 and have seen significant and continued improvement as the year has progressed.

Footy Notes But no one saw this win coming tonight, not even me! Yes, I have full confidence in these girls that we are getting better each week but they were 4th and with the previous result doesn’t leave you with much hope, but it does leave you with a chance. A chance to showcase your improvements for everyone to see. That’s exactly what these ladies did. Chloe Nagel was fantastic tonight in the way she took the game on. Grabbing the ball and taking off and running with it. She was everywhere and had a great game. Rach continues to do what any fantastic captain does and that’s leading from the front. She plays injured every week without complaints and gets smashed in contests and hurts and gets up every time. Sophie, Holly and Jade were fantastic down back and Riss and Kass were awesome in the middle of the ground in their best games for the club so far. These players are building a culture that hard work pays off and listening to plans and things we put in place if we execute they do work. Hopefully another win or two before seasons end would be awesome. I’m extremely proud of the team we are building and becoming. A fantastic 4 quarter consistent effort by the girls tonight got us over the line. Thanks so much for everyone who stayed around tonight and supported us. Your support definitely helped us get over the line.

and partners enough for their ongoing support. Last weekend during the bye round the club hosted its annual 10K reverse draw and the day did not disappoint. Kicking off early and finishing late the event was packed full of events and activities. A big congratulations to our Vice Captain Benny O for taking home the major prize! See you at the Bar O’s , it’s your shout for the next few weeks. This week presents another challenge as we travel south to take on Cranbourne is what is always an excellent contest. Finally, our final club function, the ROCest 100 is on Saturday 18 July so be sure to save the date. Good luck to all our team this weekend. Officer Last round was a fantastic day for the Football club with 3 wins from 3 outings. Our Womens side had an impressive win against Pakenham, whilst our Seniors and Reserves came out on top against Doveton. Off the field, last round also saw the club host our annual VIP & Life Members Luncheon with fantastic numbers in attendance. The Guest Speaker for the day was Aaron Bailey, Regional General Manager of AFL Yarra who provided members and guests with an update regarding the future of football in 2019 and beyond for our club and others in the region. Holt handles the spotlight By David Nagel Only a lucky few will ever get to experience the unique sensation and intense glare that comes with the pressure of the sporting spotlight. The gun-sprinter at the Olympic Games, the quarterback in gridiron, or the greatest leg-spinner in the world mesmerising batsmen at the MCG on Boxing Day. The golfer who can crash 300-metre drives on his way to leading a major on the back-nine on Sunday, or the jockey who takes the lead at the clock-tower in the Melbourne Cup. Just for one race, one game, and one test –just for one round- we’d like to be in their shoes to see how we handle the heat. In football in these parts, that man you would want to be is Cranbourne’s champion full-forward –the intimidating Marc Holt – who needs just one goal against Officer today to bring up the remarkable milestone of 1000 goals in his career. Along the way he has captained the club to a senior premiership in 2011, kicked three consecutive centuries of goals, 22 in one match, won the Norm Walker Medal in 2012 and was named captain of Cranbourne’s Team of the Last 25 Years. But it’s that intense pressure, that he grown to love as much as a strong mark, a straight kick, or as much as an ice-cold can of Bundaberg Rum, which has kept him driven. “That was always the most enjoyable thing for me, having that pressure on my shoulders, because all I wanted to do was to take this club forward,” Holt told the Pakenham Gazette in 2015. “I’ve always loved the pressure that comes with trying to win a game for your team.” Holt understands better than anyone the hollowness of individual glory, when not accompanied by team success. As captain in 2012, ’13 and ‘14, he suffered the pain of grand final defeat despite kicking 157, 118 and 103 goals for the season. “I can’t sit around with my mates in years to come and keep telling them about how many goals I’ve kicked, you just can’t excited about it because we lost those grand finals,” he said.

“They mean nothing, the 80 goals I kicked in 2011 are the best 80 goals I’ve ever kicked because they mean something and got us a premiership.” Today Holt lines up against his premiership coach from 2011, now Officer leader Doug Koop. “Yeah, he’s the man who put the ‘C’ next to my name,” Holt told the Gazette. “I was playing with my mates, and wanted to lead them but making me captain really gave me some stability. Over the years, as a full-forward, you get offered a lot of money, and it’d be easy to sell out, but having that extra responsibility really makes a difference.” Holt and Cranbourne mean so much to each other. “Look, it’s well known that I’ve had some rough times, and I’ve stuffed up a bit over the years, but the club has always been there to support me,” he said. “I appreciate that so I’ve always tried to give back to the club. The only way I know how to do that is through football, so that’s what I’ve tried to do.” And you’ve done it well Holty –and always under the spotlight.

The greatest day of his career. Marc Holt is surrounded by coach Doug Koop, left, and president Gerry Kelly, after the 2011 premiership win over Narre Warren.

Triple treat for the Magpies Already a huge occasion on the local football calendar next week’s game between Narre Warren and Cranbourne will be extra special for the Magpies with the club holding a reunion of its 2008 premiership win over Keysborough. The Magpies are the only club to go back-to-back in the 14-year history of the Casey Cardinia/South East Football Netball League, and have done it twice. The Magpies defeated Cranbourne in 2012/13, but the 2008 victory holds special significance for the club – with the Magpies making it three in a row after previous victories over Doveton and Pakenham. The Lions were expected to make it through to the big dance again in ’08, but an upset loss to Keysborough in the preliminary final opened the door for the Magpies – who produced a dominant 131-point victory on grand final day. For Matt Shinners, it was his first success as a senior coach. The Magpie stalwart played all his junior and senior football with the club until 2003, with the bitter disappointment of losing the 2002 grand final to Pakenham making him hungry to coach a senior football side. He decided to gain some experience outside the Magpies nest and spent three years as an assistant with Pakenham and Tooradin before returning to coach the Narre Warren under 18s in 2007. The cards fell his way when Aussie Jones stepped aside from the senior job and the succession was complete as Shinners filled the big shoes and set about rebuilding the

side after the departure of Jones, along with premiership players including Colin McNamara, Daniel Field, Brendan Kimber, Steven Kidd, Brett Wadelton and Shane Dwyer. The plan worked a treat and his perseverance and meticulous pre-match planning paid off bigtime on grand final day. “It’s a relief I suppose. I used to get nervous but today I was probably more anxious than anything,” he said during the post-match celebrations. “I just hoped that we brought our A-game. We prepared really well and all credit should go to Stuey Stephenson and Dean Holden and the blokes I’ve got helping. Each week we talked and on Monday nights emails went around with a look at different scenarios about how the opposition might line up. That helped the end result I reckon.” The final word was left to retiring veteran Jack McTaggart who said the bulk of the credit for the stunning 2008 premiership triumph must go to Shinners. “Shiner was in tears after the grand final in 2002 and now he’s the premiership coach. That’s down to his dedication,” McTaggart said. “He’s the heart and soul of this club. He’s done it his way and he’s probably the most respected Narre Warren person in my 13 years at the club.” Magpie on-field assistant coach Ricky Clark was awarded the VCFL Medal for best afield, while star midfielder Michael Collins was presented with the media award for his superb game. **Please contact the NWFNC for more details on next week’s reunion.

Netball Preview Finals hopes balancing on a knife edge By David Nagel At the end of the season a fine line gets drawn between the fifth and sixth teams on the ladder – one plays finals and one misses out. It’s a pretty simple equation, and one Cranbourne and ROC will be fully aware of today when they showcase their very similar skillsets at Casey Fields. Seriously, there’s absolutely nothing between these two teams heading in. Cranbourne, in fifth place by virtue of a draw against Narre Warren, has won five games and scored 489 goals for the season. ROC, in sixth place, has also won five games and scored 494 goals – just five more than the Eagles. And defensively just six goals separate the teams, so you can see we’re in for one hell of a contest this afternoon. ROC gave Doveton a really good run for its money at its last outing, matching motors with the Doves with a poor third quarter the only difference between the two sides. Olivia Hamilton, Zoe Callanan and Sidney Kneebone were impressive for the Kangaroos, while Jamilah Ferns continues to build her reputation in defence. Cranbourne was pushed aside easily by Tooradin at its last outing, proving no match for the Seagulls who scored a whopping 23 goals in the final quarter. Bridgette O’Shannessy (GK) and Kayla Wilson (GD) tried their best to fill the shoes of gun-defender Tara Cecil, but the Seagulls constant stream of supply proved to big an obstacle in the end. The Eagles need to bounce back here…and they will, with an eight-goal victory. Narre Warren will look to regain its composure and bounce back to the winners list when the Magpies host Beaconsfield at Kalora Park. The Magpies have lost two on the trot, with an expected loss to Tooradin in round 11 followed by a surprisingly poor display against Pakenham last week. Let’s take nothing away from the Lions, they were magnificent, but the Magpies should have been able to handle the very best that the home side had to offer. The fact that they couldn’t, well that’s worrying for the Magpies going forward. Britt Mashado and Chloe Phillips were rested in the third quarter, and the Magpies paid the price being outscored 19-8 for the term. Erin Clark and Carly Stagg tried to lift their team to victory, but it was too little too late in the final stages.

Narre Warren skipper Erin Clark (WD) gets first hands to the ball against Pakenham last week.

Beacy had a very strong win over Berwick with Kaela Hughes, Rylee Nelson and Ash Gill forming a great combination through the middle, while Dani Fedel, Bianca Sanzaro and Tanya Mijovic enjoyed some steady ball supply in the front half. Beacy is going a little the better at the moment and should win by six. Doveton is the next team to try and break TooradinDalmore’s stranglehold on the competition when the Doves travel to Westernport Oval today. The Doves fought hard for a three-goal victory over ROC last start in a crucial boost to their finals chances. Liz Edwards and Natalie Montanari gave nothing away in defence, while Chelsea Imanisani, Hayley Stewart and Zali Mifsud were a terrific combination through the midcourt. And Emily Pupuke, Dani Devlin and Helen-Margaret Ashin kept a steady hand when under immense pressure under the ring. The Doves won’t be able to afford one weak link today… because the Seagulls will pounce. They just have a thirst for playing good netball and have the rare ability at the moment of still getting better – despite being dominant. It’s a scary thought, and a real credit to players like Jess Cox, Bec Kinna, Emma Iacovou and Alex Maher who are still hungry for success despite last year’s premiership. Whichever way you look at it, the seagulls are too strong – they’ll win by 20 goals plus.

Netball Preview And Berwick has the opportunity to open its 2018 account when the Wickers welcome Pakenham to Edwin Flack Reserve. The Wickers have a tough run after this, against Tooradin, Doveton and Narre Warren, so need to make the most of their opportunity. The Wickers were outplayed by Beaconsfield last week but Emma Clarke, Kassidy Withers, Britt Pym and Taylah Butterworth showed enough on the court to suggest they’ll be a big chance today. One thing Berwick wouldn’t have counted on though – is Pakenham defeating Narre Warren last week! It was a stunning turnaround in form for the Lions who will be super-keen now to finish their season on a high. They’re last four games are all winnable, with Officer, Cranbourne and Doveton to follow after this clash against the Wickers. Players like Jenna Douglas, Katrina Meredith, Lorna Clark and Kyra Esler took a huge step forward last week, and they won’t want to go backwards. The Lions will win a thriller…by two goals at the final whistle. Magpie Caitlin Egan applies great pressure to Pakenham’s Taylor Dykstra during the Lions surprise win at Toomuc Reserve.

Netball Notes Narre Warren A solid day out at Pakenham today, with some very strong results across the board. Thanks to the supporters who are on the sidelines every week encouraging and cheering on our teams. Your support does not go unnoticed! #buyin2018 U13 White: Pakenham 26 def NW 21 The girls played a fantastic game this week against Pakenham. The girls fought so hard until the final whistle but unfortunately, we couldn’t get across the line going down by 5 goals. Although we didn’t get the win the girls continue to show improvement week in week out. Best on court Elly, Avani & Micaela. U13 Red: NW 34 def Pakenham 20 Congratulations on a fantastic win today, the whole team lifted and played brilliantly. The defence was able to shut down their attack end in the first half with Annie dominating. Our goalers were consistent and worked hard. It was a great team performance, one that would make us competitive in finals. U15 White: NW 39 def Pakenham 15 A great team effort by the girls this week. They came away with a great win against a very tall Pakenham side. Well done girls! Netball Notes Beaconsfield B GRADE - The Battle of the Creek was at stake again as Beaconsfield took on Berwick at Holm Park. An ever improving Berwick team meant the game could have been won by either team despite Beacy claiming both wins this season so far. Both teams started well, finishing level as Beacy opted for a more mobile shooting line up. Bessie Murphy entered the game at the start of the second quarter with the team pushing out to a 9 goal advantage at half time. Vice Captain Elise Flannery supplied quality ball into shooting circle and played the perfect decoy for the towering Murphy. Caity Budge provided many turnovers for the team, making life hard for the Berwick shooters. Beacy pushed out to claim a 13 goal win in the end. Awards- Elise Flannery, Caity Budge and Bessie Murphy. C GRADE - After having a week off it was great to see the girls play a consistent 4 quarter effort. Massive highlight has to be seeing Ciara play her first full game this season. Poss and Hannah controlled the flow of the mid court nicely, Bec applied outstanding pressure over the shot which was complimented nicely by Chars strong rebounding. Zara and Dan have also consolidated their dominance in the ring. Award winners: Poss, Char and Dan D GRADE - Battle of the Creek rivals this week, it’s a great tradition that our two clubs have built. It’s always an honour playing against Berwick, as your club displays the same amount of passion for the game as we do. Our girls really came to play after some team discussions during the week. Winning our centre passes with Sam playing her role well, it gave us the foundation to build a strong win. We really worked on creating turnovers and linking the ball to attack with more effectiveness, strong drives and backing each other. Awards- Chelsea, Maddie K and Claire. U15 RED - This round the 15 Reds were ready for a tight contested game against Berwick. With a full team, Beacy started well, creating space in all positions and ensuring accurate passing, finishing the first quarter with a one goal lead. The two teams battled it out until three quarter time, seeing only a goal or two difference and many contested passages of play. Berwick kicked on in the final quarter finishing with six goals difference between the two sides, something Beacy will be ready for in any future encounters. Awards: Subway - Abbey Kerr, Canteen - Tahlia Lane and Ducky in the Fields Cafe - Ariah Eagle U13 WHITE - This week we took on Berwick at home for the Battle of the Creek! We had a slow start after a bye last week, but managed to lift the intensity in the 2nd half and come away with a 2 point win. Our defence end worked hard all game to stop the ball getting into the ring and

our goalers worked well against difficult opponents. Our mid court in Ella and Miller worked tirelessly all game to ensure they were always an option. We look forward to taking on Berwick again come the finals series. Special thanks to Ava for filling in this week and happy birthday to Miller! Tooradin-Dalmore

This week is a big one for the club as we’ve got lots to celebrate at this week’s game. Firstly, we’d like to welcome and thank our sponsors for the 2018 season as we host them for our Sponsors Day. Without you, it wouldn’t be possible, so we thank you for your ongoing support, so our players can go out and enjoy netball each week. Special mention to our Major sponsors this year, Gendore Tractors and Machinery, C and M Steel Fabrication, Tooradin Sports Club, Frenken Homes and New Start Earthworks, as well as our Gold sponsors Tides Bar and Grill, Tooradin Pharmacy, All About Windows, O’Brien Real Estate and GK Meats. This weekend we also celebrate a huge milestone for one of the netball club’s longest serving current players. Julia Hobbs, who started at the netball club back in 1991 and played over 100 junior games, will this weekend take the court for her 250th senior game. This milestone adds to the long list of team and individual success Julia has had at the club, having been an integral part of the Gulls both on and off the court. A big congratulations to Julia on this milestone! One of our young Gulls also celebrates a milestone game this week, with Maddie Diwell to play her 100th game for the club. Maddie is in her 6th season at the club and during that time has captained teams and won best and fairest trophies. She’s a versatile player, but is known for her quiet achievements in defence. Congratulation on this achievement Maddie. Speaking of juniors, the spotlight will be on our young Gulls this week as we hold our annual junior round. The senior players will be there bright and early to cheer our junior teams, and we’ll also be holding an exhibition match starring our Under 9s and 11s stadium teams straight after the B-Grade game on the far court, so make sure you head over and watch our next generation of players in action!

Netball Notes The club enjoyed four wins across the senior sides last round against Cranbourne, and are looking to continue that success this week as we welcome Doveton to our courts. There were some good, close games against Doveton for our juniors last time we met so the girls will be looking to build on their performances and hopefully get some good team results.

As the 2018 home and away season accelerates to the finish line, we wish to acknowledge and thank our amazing 2018 sponsors. Your financial assistance allows us to provide the extras for our players/coaches. We express our sincere thanks & gratitude to all the below companies and individuals listed for their involvement in our mighty club.

GO SEAGULLS!!

Pakenham What an incredible day we had last Saturday for Round 12 in supporting the Amy Gillett Foundation event for the Rich Family. It reminded us all what an incredible community we have at Pakenham and the generosity and support of our players, families, coaches, officials and supporters was simply outstanding! Congratulations and heartfelt thanks to all involved in this fantastic community event. The club is now busy preparing for its Premiership luncheon it will host on our last home game for the SEFNL season being Round 15. The club has invited both coaches and players from the club’s premiership teams from 1960 to 2013, and are looking forward to a wonderful day with them all. Congratulations to Leah Gartside who played her 50th Game with the club for Round 12! Congratulations on this wonderful milestone and look forward to your next 50 games with the club.

SEWF Report By Lachie Ramage Another round is done and dusted in SEWF as we edge closer to a much anticipated finals series that will see the best of the best lock horns. Seaford travelled to Holm Park Reserve to take on Beaconsfield last week in a match that was key to the Eagles aspirations of playing finals. The Tigers got the jump and never looked back, consistently hitting the scoreboard and running out victors by 60 points in a one-sided affair. St Kilda Sharks took on Port Melbourne in a noncompetitive match where the Sharks won by 74 points. Cranbourne is starting to firm as a flag contender as it cruised past Chirnside Park by 45 points to make it nine wins from 11 outings. The Eastern Devils had a day out against ninth placed Gippsland, victorious by 143 points, while Mornington got the points over Endeavour Hills, the Bulldogs having a cruisy day out with an 80-point triumph. In division two Seaford showed it’s superiority against EdiAsp, victorious by 92 points. Tyabb and Eastern Devils faced off in an expected tight contest between two evenly matched teams, both on paper and in ladder positions. But little did we know Tyabb were about to blitz the Devils from the start, winning by 58 points and keeping the Devils goalless to leave them shell-shocked.

44

Warragul and St Kilda did battle, with the Dusties jumping out to a 19-point quarter time buffer which led to an 11-point win. Bass Coast flexed its muscles and strengthened its credentials as the team to beat, smashing Cranbourne by 79 points and keeping them goalless. Star player Tayla Stahl-Smith continued her stellar form booting six goals and getting in the best players yet again. In Division three Karingal were victors against Seaford by 24 points, whilst Crib Point copped a huge scare from the last placed Red Hill. Red Hill was on from the outset, the first three quarters of the game were extremely tight with the scores being tied at three quarter time. Crib Point kicked 2.6 in the final term to no score, victorious by 18 points. As was expected Hastings and the Frankston Bombers fought out a tight contest, where Hastings held a five point advantage at half and three-quarter time but were too good in the end, triumphant by seven points. And ninth-placed Pakenham hosted fourth-placed Pearcedale, with ladder positions not reflecting the way the game was played. Pearcedale led by 16 points at quarter time before the Lions dazzled, kicking three goals in the second term to build a lead they would never relinquish. Mornington had a tight tussle against Officer, but eventually the class of the Bulldogs pulled through handing them a seven-point victory.
