PROUD PARTNERS OF

AFL South East While senior football clubs across the MPNFL and SEFNL are still jostling for position in an attempt to make the top five – that part of the equation has already been completed at the junior level of the game. On behalf of AFL South East I would like to extend a warm welcome to coaches, officials, players and spectators to the 2018 Junior Finals Series. Congratulations to all teams that have made it through to this stage of the season, with a lot of hard work taking place, both on and off the field, to make this season a rewarding one. The next four weeks, across the Frankston Districts Junior Football League (FDJFL) and South East Juniors (SEJ), is always an exciting time of year when the best performed teams come together to test their skills and teamwork against the best. It’s a wonderful opportunity for boys and girls to showcase their skills in a great environment, with family and friends flocking to venues right across the region to offer their support. In fact 10 venues will host finals across the next four weeks and I thank all of those clubs and their dedicated band of volunteers for their efforts. Devon Meadows, Langwarrin and Frankston Park host finals in the FDJFL, while games will be played at Casey

Fields, Clyde, Endeavour Hills, Marriott Waters, Narre North, Pakenham and Shepley Oval in the SEJ. And I ask everyone who attends this finals series, the coaches, officials, players and spectators, to keep one thing at the forefront of their mind while at the football. Respect the game - this is football - this is fun! The expectation is that the game is treated in a respectful manner both inside and outside the fence. Parents, guardians and spectators should remember that children play football for fun - they are not miniature professionals – and deserve encouragement, not ridicule or abuse – for making a mistake or losing a game of football. Players should always play by the rules and support and encourage their teammates. To the umpires who have been selected to officiate in these big games, congratulations on your appointments and we wish you well. Australian football is one of the most difficult games to officiate. Split-second decisions are made and we implore the football community as a whole to respect the umpire’s decision at all times. To our major partners, thank you for your ongoing support and for allowing us to service our clubs. To our Corporate Partners - Bank of Queensland Frankston, Totally Workwear, Melbourne Football Club, McDonalds, Steller, SEN 1116, Chisholm, Mornington Racecourse, Heatstrip and AJ Recruitment – thank you for playing a huge role in making the 2018 Junior Finals Series what it is today. We are also excited by the introduction of a digital record for this year’s junior finals series.

Marc Holt - Loved, loathed and loyal By David Nagel It was 2.26pm on Saturday 28 July 2018, when Cranbourne champion Marc Holt made time stand still at Casey Fields. Quite fittingly the heart and soul of Cranbourne led to the social club forward pocket at the Eagles home ground as he eyed off a forward entry from Luke Bee Hugo at the two minute mark of the first term. Then, just metres away from where he has shared so may highs and lows with so many teammates over the years, the gun full-forward produced something special. With Officer full-back Stephen Heppel in tow, Holt got first hands to the footy, surprisingly dropping the mark, before reappearing from outside the boundary line to regather the Sherrin and send it high into the Cranbourne sky.

respected by opponents for his passion and loyalty to his club and his rare and exquisite football ability. Marc Holt, you’re the main reason while we will all look back on this era of the Casey Cardinia/South East Football Netball League and cherish that we were around to witness it. The road to 1000 has been a long one, bumpy at times, but the destination has now been reached. Well done Holty, you’re a champion, now a legend…and in the history books forever. For more pictures, turn to pages 24 and 25.

Time stood still as it span and it bent, and then bent further, eventually sailing through the big sticks, sending goose bumps up the spine and all eyes to Holt’s escapade up centre wing.

Never at Casey Fields have so many sets of eyes focussed all at once on the same football, with Holt’s right-foot snap starting outside the right goal post and starting to bend.

What a way to bring up your 1000th goal, and all for the same club! In scenes reminiscent of Shane Warne’s journey at the MCG after capturing the wicket of Andrew Strauss – remember Mark Taylor’s call - “Got him, there it is, wicket number 700 and they can’t catch him,” Holt took off, finger pointing to that same sky in a unique moment that only few very sportsmen get to experience. And Marc Holt, similar to Warne, well he deserves that experience. He has had more focus, some good and some bad and most of his own doing, on his career than any other player in the history of the Cranbourne Football Club, a rough diamond, a talking point, feared and loathed, but

Cranbourne gun Marc Holt about to launch the 1000th goal of his career.

Footy Preview A legendary rivalry continues By David Nagel Narre Warren and Cranbourne will add a new chapter to one of the great modern-day rivalries in local football when the Magpies and Eagles collide at Kalora Park this afternoon. These two have been going at each other for more than 60 years, but it’s been the last decade or so that has seen the combative nature of the rivalry go to a whole new level. To put a finer point on things we can probably go back to Saturday 12 September 2010, as the day the Eagles and Magpies started their most recent long-running battle. Cranbourne had finished two games clear on top of the ladder, but were a little nervous as they ran out against the Magpies in the preliminary final after an 18-point second semi-final defeat at the hands of Beaconsfield. Players like Marc Holt and Justin Berry were in their prime of their careers as the Eagles looked set to fulfil their destiny. But someone forgot to tell the Magpies, with Brett Evans kicking five, Lee Boyle four, and Michael Collins, Col McNamara and Jackson Parker running rampant as the Magpies ended the Eagles’ season in straight sets. Narre Warren would go on to win its fourth premiership in five years – and the up-and-coming Eagles had a lure to catch! And it’s been an epic rivalry ever since – with two great leaders, Michael Collins and Marc Holt, leading the way. These two haven’t always had the captaincy title next to their names, but their spirit and determination has infiltrated the four walls of their footy clubs. Michael Collins – the raging midfield bull - is the best player to have ever pulled on a black and white jumper, while Marc Holt would be in the top handful of players for Cranbourne in a history that dates back nearly 130 years. He is the only player to have kicked 100 goals in a season for the club, doing it three times, and last week celebrated the amazing milestone of 1000 goals in his career. But, for now, those stats mean absolutely nothing as Collo and Holty – who have both recently turned 33 – chase one last premiership to savour. And they’re both well in contention to do so. The Magpies sit two games clear at the top of the table with just three games to go.

Ryan Jones is having a near career-best season for Cranbourne. They are red-hot favourites to stay there, but need to win either today’s clash against the Eagles, or a final-round shootout against reigning champions Berwick, to be an absolute certainty of taking a week’s rest into the first week of the finals. Matt Shinners has done a fantastic job with the Magpies this year, introducing some youth to complement a fine blend of experience. Emerging types like Joel Zietsman, Tom Miller and Jesse Davies have become regular fixtures this year while the likes of Collins, McNamara, Nick Scanlon and Brad Scalzo are setting a fine example for the youngsters. The Eagles are building nicely at the moment with Steve O’Brien having his team playing cohesively as a unit. Holt is a massive presence up forward, Brandon Osborne still the best going around in defence, while Shaun Marusic, Ryan Davey, Luke Bee Hugo and Ryan Jones – who is having a career-best season – have a touch of class and an unbeatable feel to them when playing their best brand of footy.

Footy Preview This will be another epic contest, with the two most dangerous forward lines in the business trying to outdo each other. We’ll go for the Eagles by eight points. Pakenham has the opportunity to jump to sixth place on the ladder and apply some enormous pressure on Officer when the two sides run out for a crunch encounter at Toomuc Reserve today. The Lions have been no match for the top-two teams in the competition over the last fortnight, but showed some patches against Narre Warren and Berwick to suggest they could be on the improve. Win this and they close to within two points of the Kangaroos, who would then need to defeat Tooradin at Westernport Oval in round 18 to secure their first finals berth in 14 years. Ash Green has done a tremendous job in bringing together so many different elements this year. The Lions are barely recognisable compared to teams of the past few seasons, with regular performers like Steve O’Bryan, Jake Barclay, Steve Morey, Jack Kowarzik and skipper Chris Cardona having to gel with many a fresh new face. Darcy Hope is a good-sized defender and starred against Berwick last week, while Brayden Baguley was given some key roles to fulfil on debut. Learning to run with players like Madi Andrews, Bryce Rutherford and co will hold the youngster in good stead as he moves forward with his footy career. Liam Tyrrell is another emerging talent in the ruck, while Jimmy Harrison will be keen to turn one on against the Kangaroos today. Officer is struggling to get the ball through the big sticks at the moment, kicking 1.11 against Cranbourne last week – but at least created some opportunities. Matty Clarke will be better after a couple of runs back from a spell and should be the key focus for the Lions when assessing their defensive matchups this afternoon.

James Waldon has been a rock in defence for Officer this year.

8

Zak Roscoe brings some terrific form into today’s clash against Narre Warren. Does Morey go back and take of Clarke, or does he stay at centre-half forward and try to hurt the Kangas the other way? Stephen Heppel did a great a great job on Marc Holt after quarter time last week while James Waldon, Matt Rogers and the emerging Tyler Clark are Kangaroos that will need to fire up if the visitors are to lock away that elusive finals campaign. But it won’t happen today – in front of a raucous home crowd on the balcony the Lions will keep their season alive – and they’ll do it by 23 points. Gaining the four points might be difficult but Tooradin has a hell of a lot to play for when the Seagulls roll out the welcome mat for reigning premiers Berwick at Westernport Oval today. The equation is pretty simple for Lachie Gillespie and his team right now. The Seagulls need Pakenham to defeat Officer at Toomuc Reserve today, and if that happens then need to roll Beaconsfield and Officer in their last two outings to play finals. The Seagulls have been pretty good of late, defeating Doveton by 48 points last week to keep their season alive. Andrew Dean and Jason Kestle were the key targets up forward, booting four each, while Jake O’Donnell and Julian Suarez slotted two apiece, and will need to continue their form over the next three weeks for the Seagulls to be a chance. All four of those players can cause damage without many touches, and need to be efficient if the Seagulls are to push the Wickers this afternoon. You just don’t get too many opportunities against this Wickers defence. Jo West, Jayden Joyce, Luke Sheppard, Ash Smith, Will Arthurson and Nick Hillard have a perfect combination of stopping power and out-and-out run and carry.

www.aflsoutheast.com.au

Footy Preview Sheppard and Arthurson can get the ball from one end of the ground to the other in a hurry, while Smith’s right foot is going to be one of the key weapons comes finals time. Berwick will win this, and win quite easily, but let’s keep an eye on the Seagulls and how they fight the game out and how they prepare themselves for their last-chance scenario against Beaconsfield next week! It’s the Wickers by 38 points. And Beaconsfield gets to take its last deep breath before beginning its run towards finals when the Eagles welcome Doveton to Holm Park Reserve. The Eagles were blown away early and were no match for Narre Warren last week, but they weren’t the first and won’t be the last to suffer that fate this season. Let’s be honest here, the Eagles are not a genuine contender this season but coach Leigh McQuillen is building something very exciting for the future. The young talent on show at Holm Park Reserve is impressive, with Ryan Bromley, Jake Bowd, Riley Verbi and Jack Docherty just the tip of the iceberg when it comes to the players that can take this club forward. Emerging leaders like Damien and Daniel Johnston will be keen to stick around and enjoy some sustained success with this group in the coming years. Doveton is limping to the line at the moment but is another club that has an eye firmly fixed on the future. Club president Aaron Henwood is one of a core group of players that has these new ankle-biters snapping at his feet. Russ Gabriel, Matt Stapleton and Steve Henwood also need to be admired for sticking this one out, with exciting types like Mitch Cotter and Beau Anthony making that an easier assignment. The Doves have been competitive at times, but not for long enough through games, and will suffer the same fate today with a 46-point defeat.

Footy Notes Berwick Last week finally saw the sun come out for a home game, must be the first time since round 1 and it was thoroughly enjoyed. It was also our sponsors day, cricket club coterie day and our Berwick Junior Club chance to play a half time match against the Pakenham Juniors. Thanks to Stew and the boys for letting the kids run out with them and then sing the song after the game. May seem minor but it is these small things that keep the bond between juniors and seniors super strong. On the footy front we had strong wins in all grades. Good work guys. This weeks sees us up against Tooradin in what is always a danger game for Berwick. Tooradin play their ground well and we always seem to have to battle hard to get the 4 points. With half of the under 19s coaches away in Bali it will be up to Sully and Shannon to make their mark....good luck guys. Just an update on some facility improvements....... we have been successful in securing a co-contribution grant to replace all the canteen appliances and include an extraction system. That will keep Jo happy for while. We are also joining in with the cricket club to lift the cricket pitch to be level with the grass. Last but not least we have a grant from Casey Council to upgrade the heating and cooling for the social rooms. Big thanks to Peter Hughes for driving this. All this is important as it provides a facility that will support the local area and more importantly those kids I mentioned at the start well into their senior football careers.

Narre Warren Today is Past Players Day at Fox Road when we welcome players and officials from past eras to share some typical Narre hospitality. Thanks for coming along… and don’t be a stranger! We’d love to see more of you, more often at our matches and functions. And please stay on after today’s match for the player reunion to mark the 10th anniversary of Narre’s 2008 Senior and Under 18 Premierships. All supporters welcome. Get around it! Last Saturday we hosted Beaconsfield in front of a bumper crowd at Fox Road and scored 3 solid wins against a potential finals opponent in all grades. In the Ones we jumped out of the gates with intent – Trent Shinners was marking strongly across half forward; and Stewie Scanlon was at his elusive best, notching three goals to his name by the three-minute mark of the

second quarter. Beacy are fit and determined, and there was barely an aerial contest that didn’t have two or three Beacy players flying desperately to win the footy. But as the game progressed Narre steadied across the ground and opened up a match-winning break. Jesse Davies and Ryan Quirk were fantastic in defence, while Brad Scalzo, Nathan Foote and Trent Cody won the on-ball battles as we nailed a 49-point victory. The Ressies match was a game of two halves. The early part was a close contest with Narre working in overdrive to hold a four-goal lead at the main break. Kyle Graham and ‘Disco’ Collins were getting plenty of footy and Andy Ray was breaking free off half back and pumping his big sixty metre drop punts to targets up forward. Then Narre took complete control with a 12-goal to 2-goal second half, consistently punching holes in Beacy’s defence. Mitch Tonna, Bobby Harvey and Mitch Cowan - with 3 goals each - led our list of 10 individual goalkickers as we kicked away to a 90-point win. Our Under 19s prevailed over Beaconsfield, who sat unbeaten (4 games plus 40% on top of the ladder) when they arrived at Fox Road. This was an exceptional Narre win in a high quality match. Both teams played some uncompromising and at times, sublime footy. A strength of Narre’s young side is our multiple avenues to goal – this week it was Connor Wilkins who stepped up with 3 goals next to Max Sheppard’s 4. Our ball movement was slick and accurate and we responded with steely resolve everytime Beaconsfield rallied a challenge with consecutive goals. Jake Stuart, Ash Williamson and Ryan Patterson were also in Narre’s best. Coming events Tomorrow, Sunday 5 August is our Major Raffle Draw, 1pm to 5pm. $6,000 first prize. Tix $100 include function with beer, wine, food and entertainment. Contact Hayden James for tickets 0400 020370. Saturday 11 August from 1.00 pm. Footy Notes Pakenham Seniors - 28.07.2018 Pakenham vs Berwick After a competitive first half against Berwick, we struggled after that going down by a disappointing 61 points. Congratulations to Brayden Baguley who played his first senior game for the year after being in good form in the reserves and Darcy Hope who is new to the club this year & coming back after off season surgery, was simply outstanding. Best players were Darcy Hope, Steve O’Bryan, Zac Stewart, Liam Tyrrell & JJ Peni. We look forward to today’s challenge against a quality outfit in Officer and it should be a great game. Reserves - Today was like so many other games this year, we played a strong, hard, physical game but come up short again. For the second time this year we were within 3 goals of Berwick at 3 quarter time, then fell away in the last quarter. The boys have shown so much improvement throughout the year and are improving every week. With only 3 games left this year we are aiming to win all 3 and continue our improvement every week. Under 19’s - Another tough day at the office, we showed glimpses of good football certainly in the first quarter however playing with only 17 eventually got on top of us, Thank you to Berwick for playing within the spirit of the game and levelling up with us. Well done to our boys for never giving up. Well done Berwick. PFC Senior Women’s Team

Cranbourne What a week in football we had!! So let’s just cut to the best part of it…. Marc Holt…… We were privileged last week to witness one of the great moments for not only our club but for local footy in general. Needing one goal to hit the magical 1,000 goal target, Marc, as always, did it in style, 90 seconds in to the game with a snap from the boundary line that not many could do. It has undoubtedly become the most significant individual moment in our clubs 129-year history and something that for those of the huge crowd that were there on the beautiful winters afternoon, will remember forever as they witnessed history in the making. Since that moment, Marc has featured on SEN radio, had seemingly an edition of the Pakky Gazette devoted entirely to him, has made page 14 of the Herald Sun and

14

on Thursday night, appeared on the Footy Show. Oh….and he had an end behind the southern goals named after him…… A truly magnificent person and player who has achieved everything that he has played for…now for just another flag to add to his resume….. Now back to the 19s and we faced off against a determined Officer who were intent to make us earn every contest. With a two goal at the first break and a five-goal lead at half time, the boys were cruising. While we gave them a slight sniff early in the third, we never looked like losing and lead at the final change by 56 points. To Officer’s credit, they hung on and didn’t allow for a blow out but we still manage to come away with a strong 65-point win. Best were Haz, Tom Wright, BOT, Luca, Cambell and Richo. The twos were next in a game we expected to win although the way Officer started we knew it wasn’t going to be a walk in the park. They kicked the three of the first four of the match before we steadied a little in the second quarter to outscore them by seven goals to nil to go in to the main break with a 32-point lead. By three quarter time we had extended that margin to 39 points although it may have been closer had Officer had their sights in range, kicking 1.6 in the third. By the end however we came away with a solid 81-point win after we had again piled a seven-goal quarter. Best for us were Koey, Jake, Az, Fish, Russo A, and Smash. With the distraction of Marc’s pending 1000th, we may have been forgiven for having our minds elsewhere. But 90 seconds in to the game and that distraction was out of the way and it showed on the scoreboard as we kicked 6.5 – 0.1 with Holty running rampant kicking four in the first. From there we controlled the game with two three-goal quarters to follow but more importantly was our ability to restrict their score, keeping the opposition goalless till three-quarter time in perfect footy conditions. By the end of the game, we came away with a 77-point victory but the day undoubtedly belong ed to Marc Holt who wrote himself in to the record books with his magnificent achievement. Best for us were Roscoe, Jonesy, Yoz, Dicko, Holty and Cheekas. Upcoming Events Hall of Fame/Life Member Induction Night Friday August 10th. AFL Vic Country First of all, huge congratulations go out to the Hosking family for their superb efforts last week in raising funds and awareness for their foundation “It’s Okay, Not to be Okay”.

This White Ribbon Round raised over $500 for White Ribbon programs in Victoria kicking off the partnership between the VFL and White Ribbon Australia on a very positive note.

The Hosking family formed It’s Okay, Not to be Okay, after losing their brother and son Ben to suicide at the age of just 22 in May 2016.

The VFL’s commitment to the White Ribbon social change movement will work to raise awareness of the importance of respectful relationships among codes, clubs, members and fans.

Their aim and mission is to educate, support and assist with mental health battles, loss and grief struggles, and promote suicide prevention within the community, because we all walk around with stories and feelings that not many, or no one else knows about. The family provided a powerful message last week, with Frankston Bombers and Bonbeach wearing blue socks to mark the occasion. Today, AFL Victoria is supporting another great cause – White Ribbon. With the launch of AFL Victoria’s Corporate Social Responsibility program earlier this year, White Ribbon Australia was been chosen as one of the four charities for the CSR program focus. This new collaboration with AFL Victoria will create numerous opportunities for White Ribbon Australia to work alongside the league to address the issue of men’s violence against women that is prevalent within Australia today.

AFL Victoria CEO Steven Reaper understands the collaborative importance. “We know that football plays a powerful role in Victorian culture and the four themed rounds will enable us to utilise the strength of the Victorian football community to support and promote these causes,” Reaper said The other themed rounds will be supporting charities Fight MND, beyondblue, and Victorian Responsible Gambling Foundation (VRGF). Today marks the official AFL Victoria White Ribbon Round to be held on the weekend of Saturday August 4. The South East Football Netball League (SEFNL) will pay its own mark of respect to the cause, with SEFNL White Ribbon Round to be held on the last home-and-away day of the season, Saturday 18 August. The game between Doveton and Pakenham will once again provide a powerful message, with special guest speakers and Victoria Police to speak on the day.

The partnership has brought together clubs from across the state participating in White Ribbon Rounds throughout the season in order to increase awareness to players, staff and supporters. The first White Ribbon Round for 2018 took place on Saturday 5 May where the Frankston Dolphins played against the Northern Blues. Players wore white arms bands in solidarity with women who have died at the hands of a current or former partner. White Ribbon Ambassador, Glenn BuesnelMay, opened the event recognising the importance of such community and sports collaboration to end men’s violence against women.

Stingrays set a hot pace Dandenong Southern Stingrays continue to lead the way in the TAC Cup this season after a blistering lastquarter display resulted in a 40-point win against the Calder Cannons. The game was played in horrendous conditions on Sunday morning at RAMS Arena, Craigieburn. The Stingrays didn’t have the game their own way with the Cannons presenting a far sterner test than what was expected. It would also be the first time in 13 games that the Stingrays would lose the first quarter. They were defending a fourgoal breeze and went in five points down at the first change. It was a gallant effort from the Stingrays defenders, who had their hands full, not only contending with the repeat entries, but the tricky ball flight and smaller opponents. Stingrays coach Craig Black thought it was going to be a tough day at the office when driving to the ground. “We knew Calder at home, in these types of conditions would suit them better,” Black said. “They train and play here 12 months of the year so know how to better play the conditions well. “We also didn’t adjust the team to the conditions early in the week, continuing to expose and play our taller players. Those conditions weren’t ideal for them, but what a great learning experience they gain from it.”

Bailey Williams finished well in credit after booting two goals and adjusting easily to the windy conditions, taking numerous contested marks. Jai Taylor started the game slotting back to his beloved wing position, kicing two majors for the game and Sam Fletcher continued his impressive form as in the inside midfielder. He was supported well by Jamie Plumridge, along with a returning player to the team in Fin Bayne whose school football commitments have concluded for the year. Captain-courageous Campbell Hustwaite once again led the way, lifting his team mates in the second quarter pumping the ball inside 50 with regularity. With a six-day turnaround the Stingrays travel to Preston Oval to take on the Northern Knights today at 2.00pm. The Knights are currently sitting eighth on the TAC Cup Ladder and need to win at least half of their remaining games to secure a final spots. Netball Preview Berwick breaks the drought By David Nagel Before we get things started in round 14 we must congratulate Berwick for its first win of the season against Pakenham at Edwin Flack Reserve last week. Well done to Robynn Pym and the entire Berwick squad for persisting all season and finally coming away with the chocolates. And their prize for doing so – a trip to Westernport Oval today to take on the red-hot and undefeated reigning champions Tooradin-Dalmore. Okay it’s not a great prize, but the Wickers will at least go in smiling after the big win against the Lions last week. The Wickers trailed by two goals at half time but doubled the Lions score in the second half, scoring 28 to 14, to run away with a much-celebrated victory. Everything came together for the Wickers, with Morgan Thomas (GK) and Finlay McMillan (GD) brilliant in defence while Jaime Cotter (C), Taylah Butterworth (WA) and Olivia Macente (WD) matched motors with the Lions’ midcourt. And Emma Clarke (GS) and Kassidy Withers (GA) kept their nerve when every shot at goal was important in the final term. Well done Wickers – but today’s challenge is a monumental one. The Seagulls, as Seagulls should, are flying at the moment with Kelly Andrews getting her team into tip-top shape ahead of what’s looking to be a two-game finals campaign. Jess Cox (GA) was at her brilliant best against Doveton last week while Bec Kinna (GD) and Rachel Cole (GK) did a great job of keeping the Doveton shooters quiet in the first half. There are no weaknesses at Tooradin – and they’ll win by 20-goals plus. ROC will look to keep its finals dreams alive when the Kangaroos make the short trip to Toomuc Reserve to take on Pakenham. The Kangaroos were gutsy last week against Cranbourne, coming from nine goals behind at half time before finishing fast for a draw. Sam Neil (C) starred for the Kangas in centre, with Zoe Callanan (WA), Sara Villiers (GS), Mel Overdyk (GK) and Georgie Douglas (WD) proving a formidable combination in the second half. Pakenham held a slender advantage at half time last week but fell asleep in the second half to become Berwick’s first victim for the season. The Lions were well served by Lauren Wenn (GK) and Abbey Tognazzini (GD) in defence, while Jenna Douglas, Bec Langford and Katrina Meredith never stopped trying through the middle of the court.

There was only one prize that mattered for Cranbourne and ROC last week.

But the Kangas have something to play for here, and they’ll be motivated enough to win by 10. Cranbourne sits in fourth place but still needs to win one more game to play finals – a difficult assignment this afternoon against Narre Warren at Kalora Park. The Eagles need to salute in either this one against the Magpies, next week against Pakenham, or in round 16 against Beaconsfield to take on either Doveton or ROC in the elimination final. The Eagles had a super-slow start to the season, but have recovered well but will be disappointed with their secondhalf performance against ROC last week. They gave a nine-goal lead to come away with a draw! But Tahlia Coates, Nat Sparks, Kayla Wilson and Allie Oakenfull showed enough last week to suggest the Eagles will be a chance today against the Magpies, who came up short against Beaconsfield. Jayde Stow (WD) took the place of skipper Erin Clark, while Britt Mashado (C), Caitlin Stephens (GD) and Kealeigh Brown (GA/WA) were solid four-quarter contributors. Cranny could move to within one game of the Magpies with a win, but the home side will be too strong – they’ll get the job done by eight goals.

Netball Preview And Doveton will temporarily slip outside of the top five unless the Doves can pull off a surprise against Beaconsfield at Holm Park Reserve. The Doves shouldn’t panic, they play Berwick and Pakenham in the run home, but matching it with the Eagles would be the perfect confidence booster heading into this year’s finals series. The Doves outplayed by Tooradin last week but Hayley Stewart, Liz Edwards, Lesila Seeto and Chelsea Imanisani will be keen to bounce back to the winners list today. Beacy is cruising along nicely at the moment, but needs to find a gear or two if it is to challenge Tooradin when the heat cranks up in September. Kaela Hughes would love nothing better than lifting up the precious piece of silverware, while Zoe Mason, Bianca Sanzaro, Jordan Lang and defender Abbie Sheers will be keen to add to Beaconsfield’s very proud netball heritage. They’ll take another step today – with a 10-goal victory over the Doves.

Cranbourne and ROC had a very competitive day of netball at Casey Fields last week.

Netball Notes Narre Warren What a beautiful day for netball! The sun was shining and everyone was grateful not to be playing in the stormy conditions of the previous two weeks. Impressive results across the board, with seven wins from ten. As we approach the last few rounds of the home and away season, all teams are well placed on the ladder. All senior teams are in the top four and all junior teams are in the top five. GO NARRE!! #buyin2018 U13 White: Beaconsfield 24 def NW 11 The girls knew they had a big game this week against Beaconsfield. We started really well and showed a lot of improvement compared to the last time we played Beaconsfield. Unfortunately, we were not consistent enough across the whole game, but very pleased with the effort the girls showed. Best on court awards: Tahni, Jenna, Ava & Paige. U13 Red: NW 19 def Beaconsfield 16 Great tight game today girls. Each quarter was different and you were able to adapt your play especially through the mid court where zones were set up. Such an enormous improvement from each of you. Delainey’s smart movement of the ball, feeding in the circle and cool head in the last minutes gave that edge to win the game by 2. Well done beautiful girls! U15 White: NW 24 drew Beaconsfield 24 The girls played an amazing game against Beacy this week, coming away with a draw against a very tough Beacy side. Well done girls! U15 Red: NW 24 def Beaconsfield 16 Fantastic team game from all 9 players in a must win match today. Everyone worked together for all 4 quarters to turn around from a 5-goal loss in round 3, to an 8-goal win today. The whole team is gelling really well and we are improving every week. U17 White: NW 30 def Beaconsfield 25 A hard fought out game today! Great effort by the girls to come away with a win! Best on court was Chloe in goals and Rylee in defence! Well done! Netball Notes Tooradin-Dalmore The weather turned it on for our big day of netball and celebrations on Saturday as we welcomed Doveton to our courts. We held our annual Junior Round, with lots of senior players coming down to watch our young girls in action, including our two 13s teams who both had their second wins for the season! We also welcomed down our Under 9s and 11s stadium teams who played in an exhibition match after the B-Grade. To keep with the theme of celebrating our juniors, the coaches have each given a wrap up of their team’s great games. U/13 Red – Kelly Andrews and Mairead Holloway After a scrappy win over Doveton in Rnd 8, we asked the girls for a smarter, crisper game which they delivered. Some brilliant accuracy from our goalers, our centre court finding circle edge and all over great one on one defence set us up for a big win. The girls put on display all the things we’ve been working on this year. BOC: Josie, Seniors Choice and Coaches Award: Emmeline. U/13 White- Mikaylah Howes The 13 whites went out on court focussing on a couple things I had asked of them, to start in front of their players and to get some angle on their leads. Every single player on court did exactly that. The intensity down the court was amazing. We had multiple leads to the ball and clearing the space if not used. We also were chasing up the 1 percenters which was a massive help in our win. BOC: Chloe, Coaches Award: Billie, Seniors Choice: Brooklyn U/15 Red- Jess Cox and Ebony Dolan The girls went out on court to showcase the different things we’ve been working on at training each week. There were great links between the defensive and attacking ends of the court which allowed for a smooth transition into the goal circle. Excellent rebounding and rotation from the goalers, our mid courters using prelim movements for excellent drives down the court and some talking and communication between the defenders saw the girls work together as a team for four quarters. BOC and Seniors Choice: Charlee, Coaches Award: Emilie Jones. U/15 White- Emma Haynes Heading into the game the girls had a clear goal to better the score line from Rd 8. They succeeded with a strong defensive game keeping the opposition to lowest score against us this season. We had 5 original team members plus 4 eager U/13s players that showcased some exciting talent. As a team they combined well with their strong drives, multiple leads, great decision making and patience to bring the ball down to a variety of attacking combinations throughout the game. BOC: Zoe, Coaches Award: Tiana, Seniors Choice: Jayde. U/17 Red- Jess Cox and Lisa Williams The girls came out with great intensity, bringing what we have been working hard on at training into the game. Layla,

Maggie and Mikayla worked tirelessly in defence all day. Our mid court of Jaz, Tiff and Em had great speed, leads, angles and patience which transferred into some fantastic circle edge feeds into our goaling duo of Mairead and Lauren. BOC Layla, Coaches Award: Lauren, Seniors Choice: Mairead U/17 White- Alex Maher This week the team had a few main focuses to think about on court. Across the court the girls were asked to dictate/ delay their players rather than to chase. Maddie Diwell at GK was able to successfully hunt a number of longer passes Doveton was forced to throw as a result of the team’s defensive efforts. In attack the girls were asked to focus on balancing the court through the timing of their leads. This saw some great leads in and out of the circle from the goalers, setting up some wonderful passes and feeds for the mid court who created a well-balanced circle edge. BOC and Seniors Choice: Maddie, Coaches Award: Lily GO SEAGULLS!

Pakenham With the business end of the season fast approaching, it was great to witness on the weekend strong competitive netball played by our teams in the top 5 to show they are real premiership contenders. Congratulations to our U13 Red team with injuries affecting this young team of superstars it was so exciting to see the skilled netball being put out on the court and the display of great team work! Best wishes to Ella and Bridget on your ankle injury recoveries. Congratulations to U17 White, B Grade and D Grade on your wins it is great to see the consolidating on court of the training that players have been exposed to all season. To all our teams keeping working hard let’s finish the season off, it is a matter of sustaining intensity and producing four quarters of consistent skilled netball. We are so proud of all our players commitment to their training, each other and their club. Our club’s future is looking bright and we are working diligently on plans for our 2019 season with AFL Yarra Ranges. We are proud of the progress we have made in 2018 with our rebuilding process. It is easy to get disappointed if your only focus is ladders/scoreboards, but at Pakenham we always had a club plan and are extremely fortunate to have the youth and talent across our teams and our coaching panel knew that what we needed was patience as we develop players self-belief, experience and confidence this year so that we can then obtain four consistent quarters of skilled netball under pressure. Every club at some time will need to rebuild and this has been our year, but we are working hard as a club and are proud of our coaches and players and what has been achieved. The improvements are there to be seen when you break it down quarter by

Berwick For our 2nd last home game of season 2018, we saw our beloved A Grade #wickers take home the win against Paky. The elation was evident as time has passed through the season with some outs and ins, week in week out, along with an injury or 2. New coach Robynn Pym has persevered all season with this young bunch of wickers and the hard work finally paid off. Congrats to A grade on a long awaited win, the club are super proud of you and so are our very loyal supporters, with the Pres receiving texts from Sydney and Bali checking in to see the live scores were true throughout the game. With several wins across the board last round against Beacy, the junior teams came our firing from the 13 white’s with a great win and reds with a nail biting draw that came down to the last ball off the hands of a gaoler and through the ring. Our 15’s both took the wins convincingly, some different changes and movement on both courts. Coaches keeping faith in the versatility of their players. A special mention to Caity Johnson in 15 whites who shot the game of her life, with some great assists from her fellow goaler and midcourt team mates. 17 Reds, also had a great win, with players also out at Vic State School games & injury, some young guns stepping up and into the ranks, taking home the points.

D grade unfortunately went down in a 1 goal nail biter in the dying seconds of the game, this will keep them striving for a win on the board. C Grade also had a massive game and saw the points come the #wickers way. With only 3 rounds to go until finals, the #wicks are looking super confident with our juniors again sitting pretty on the ladder. Looking forward to a sensational finals series with our club hosting the Grand Final this year. A huge thank you to one of our major sponsors The Main in Berwick who hosted lots of dinners over the past couple of weeks for our players and I know a few families have also enjoyed dinners there. As always we thank Smart Cleaning for their continued support, along with BERWICK Mazda who recently released their newest model the CX-8, Straight Smiles Pakenham & Dandenong, Bakers Delight, Maxx Promotions. This week see’s us travel to Tooradin where our junior players will concentrate on getting more points on the board leading into the finals and setting themselves up for September.

Netball Notes Doveton U13 Red: A lovely morning for the start of the netball round for our baby Doves. Unfortunately this team only had 6 players, but they just got on with it…. Great play, support and encouragement on court from Holly as always, with Zealand and Cheylene helping out on the sidelines. U13 White: In near perfect playing conditions we were unable to convert in the goals circle although we had some beautiful passes of play from these baby Doves. Every player in this team has improved out of sight during the season. BOC was Emma Hendy for her passing and her leads to the ball, a very impressive game from this young lady. U15 Red: Girls struggled to get their game together for the first three quarter but stayed strong. Last quarter was a lot better with a few very strong passages down to goal. This game did show that the girls need to work on their fitness and also need to stick to game play that we talk about and practice at training. Need to lift now heading towards the finals. U15 White: A couple of players unavailable meant we had to call on replacements and have no bench, the team didn’t seem to let that worry them though as they had a convincing 31-7 win. The defensive pressure all over the court was a pleasure to watch, that is something we have concentrating on all season. Our goalers were able to con vert on the many turnovers. Two very happy coaches and 7 very happy players!! U17 Red: Well, Well, Well… Great work today ladies – good efforts, played with right attitude. Time to step it up, two massive games coming up!! Thursday, we will have a run and try and work on a few things… like our energy and enthusiasm!!!! U17 White: The girls played for four quarters with each quarter being just as strong as the last, which sometimes is hard when you are working with a team of team and have many changed each quarter. No matter what combination I put on court, this team just click! What I love the most about this team is they really enjoy their netball, always smiling and full of support towards each other. B Grade: Excellent come back by this team whom are always there for each other every week. Great culture and togetherness proven in this game against quality opposition. When we move the ball at speed and look at our options carefully we are unstoppable. We were fearless on defence as a whole team and got some amazing turnover.

38

Again some players playing out of normal position but they all showed heart in a score line that really could have gone either way…. Well done team – really proud!!! A Grade: Firstly thank you to our B grade ladies whom helped us out today, due to have very low numbers in our top side against Tooradin. Tooradin has some key talented players in their side, even without the VNL ladies, each player just really strives for their position. Our first quarter/half wasn’t the greatest and just turned into a chase game. We let Tooradin take control, which allowed them to force us in turning over our own opportunities. Second half was a different story – fresh legs with our two juniors Bubba and Silla arriving - we found some confidence and the energy levels were raised. It was a better half and opportunity was there to take that game but if was just too late for us. Another hard game against Beaconsfield coming up let’s gain more position, convert our goals and keep the intensity for all four quarters!!!!

SEWF Report By Lachie Ramage Another thrilling round of football has come to an end and we are about to find out who wants to go that extra mile to feature in finals action this season. In division one Mornington faced off against Beaconsfield in an extremely-tight contest that saw the Eagles jump out of the gates to hold a 13-point quarter time lead. From there the Bulldogs stepped up their game, kicking two goals from eight scoring shots in the next two quarters to hold a slight three-quarter time lead. The last quarter is where the game opened up; with the Bulldogs kicking three goals to two to just hold on by 11-points against a more than competitive Eagles outfit. Ladder leaders Seaford were challenged by the St Kilda Sharks, and with the margin being less than a goal at quarter time it was time for the Tigers to step up and show their superiority. They did just that leading by three goals at half time and the Sharks couldn’t find a way to catch up, going down by 20-points in a gallant effort. Cranbourne defeated Port Melbourne by 24-points, whilst Chirnside Park was triumphant against Gippsland Maroons by 68-points. Endeavour Hills forfeited, handing Eastern Devils the win. In division two the Eastern Devils and Seaford did battle, the Tigers were chasing tail all day to try and claw their way back after the Devils got out to a three goal lead in the second term. It wasn’t to be for the Tigers as the Devils handed them their second loss for the season. St Kilda Sharks defeated Edi-Asp by 34-points and kept them goalless in doing so, whilst Tyabb cruised past Cranbourne by 35-points also keeping them goalless. Bass Coast continued their unstoppable form claiming a 124-point win over Warragul and not surprisingly star player Tayla Stahl-Smith booted seven goals and claimed best on ground honours yet again. In division three Crib Point met Pakenham on a Friday night at Major Recreation Reserve. The Lions took it right up to Magpies for the first three quarters being down by just eight points at three- quarter time, but the Magpies were too strong in the end running away 34-point winners. Karingal pulled off a huge upset win over Mornington, handing them its second loss for the season. The Bulls were just too strong for the Bulldogs on the day, keeping the Dogs to just two goals and winning by 20-points. It will be hard to see Hastings losing top spot as they cruised past Seaford by 34-points. All the Blues have to do is win one of the last two games and they will be the minor premiers of division three. Arguably the game of the year took place at Red Hill Recreation Reserve between Red Hill and Pearcedale.

44

The Panthers would have expected to breeze past the last placed Hills, but the events that took place were far from ideal for the Panthers. The Panthers held a slight lead at every change, but they wouldn’t have expected the Hills to come out in the last quarter and beat them by two-points, claiming their first victory for the season. The Frankston Bombers survived a scare from Officer but eventually held on by 12-points. PREVIEW In division one the Eastern Devils collide with the St Kilda Sharks in what looks set to be a blockbuster, if the Sharks win they will go a long way to securing a finals berth. On the flipside if they go down to the Devils then the door is left ajar for Mornington, who could slide into fourth position at the end of the round if they conquer Cranbourne. In division two Bass Coast takes on Tyabb, in what is a huge opportunity for the Yabbies to knock off the top team in it and send an alarming message to the rest of the competition. In division three Mornington takes on the Frankston Bombers in what looms as a finals sneak peek, the winner will aim to gain a mental advantage heading into crunch time. We are all set for what is set to be a huge round of football to come in South East Womens Footy.
