AFL South East WELCOME TO SEASON 2018 Some clubs have already tasted the heat of battle over the Easter weekend, but on behalf of the AFL South East Commission I wish everyone involved in the Mornington Peninsula Nepean Football League (MPNFL) and the South East Football Netball League (SEFNL) a successful 2018 season It has been an eventful summer to say the least in the region. For the first time in many years, the MPNFL will return to a divisional structure, with seven clubs from the former Peninsula competition and three from Nepean now comprising the Chisholm Division 1. The balance of Peninsula and Nepean clubs will participate in the Bendigo Bank Division 2. The Commission’s preferred vision was to have a threedivisional competition also involving MPNFL and SEFNL Clubs. This would have provided even more competitive balance, reduced costs for clubs and a potential point of entry for new clubs. However, this was rejected by MPNFL clubs, which exercised their right in accordance with their Rules to block the strategy. SEFNL will now pursue an alternative divisional model beyond 2018. Nonetheless we have an exciting season in prospect. Reigning premiers Frankston YCW and Sorrento will clash in a mouth watering clash in Round 1. One scribe described this as the most anticipated game in 30 years. It will be the first time these two power-house clubs have met for premiership points since 1989. At the other end of the scale there are several clubs in Division 2 which have not played finals for some time. The opportunity exists for them to rebuild and see some September action this year. In all likelihood one club which has not experienced premiership glory for many years will do so in 2018 and advance to the top division in 2019. There was a burst of publicity several weeks ago relating to country competitions. We are very fortunate in the South East region to have two very strong senior leagues, which are governed under the AFL regional model. At one end of the scale we have clubs which are capable of developing players who move comfortably into TAC Cup, AFL and VFL clubs. In recent times, players such as Hunter Clarke, Luke Davies-Uniacke, Nick Coffield and many others have progressed from this region to AFL ranks. At the other end of the scale former AFL players are attracted to our region due to the strength of competitions. This year we welcome players such as Jarrod Grant, Mitch Hallahan and Matthew Boyd into our ranks for the first time. Former Melbourne players Luke Tapscott and Chris Dawes will again spearhead Sorrento’s charge for a final’s berth and Travis Tuck will add further strength to reigning SEFNL premier Berwick. PLAYER PAYMENTS Clubs have been advised that in its second year of operation the Player Payment threshold for all senior clubs in the region will be $150,000.

While some leniency was applied in 2017, in 2018 strict compliance will be enforced. This is essential for the fairness of the competition, but also a way of assisting the sustainability of clubs by trying to curb the extravagant spending by clubs. It is anticipated that the current threshold will reduce over time. INTER LEAGUE While there is a clear focus on round 1 over the Easter weekend (particularly for MPNFL Division 1 clubs), the Leagues are also preparing for their respective Inter League matches in May. The number-3 ranked league in the State, the MPNFL, will take on the Northern Football Netball League at Cramer Street, Preston, coached by Chris Holcombe. We will also have an Under 19 representative game on that day, coached by Josh Moore. Our women will also get the chance to play representative football for the first time when our regional competition (South East Women’s Football) will field a team against Northern, with our team coached by Megan Snart. SEFNL, in an ironic match up, will be pitted against Yarra Ranges at Holm Park, Beaconsfield in a curtain raiser to a Richmond v Sandringham VFL game. Former Berwick premiership coach Rhys Nisbet will take charge. NETBALL One of the advantages our region has over neighbouring metropolitan leagues is the benefit clubs derive from a strong netball focus. During our football review, it became evident to AFLSE that the close relationship between football and netball was a key to the viability of clubs as a whole. Accordingly, AFLSE has appointed a dedicated netball operations manager in Samantha Downie to oversee netball across the region. Sam is an experienced netball person, having played, coached, administered and umpired during her long-term involvement in the sport. Sam’s focus will be to manage the MPNFL and SEFNL netball competitions with a particular emphasis on strategies around participation, equalisation, competitiveness and umpiring. CLUB SUPPORT PROGRAMS AFLSE would also like to thank the Melbourne Racing Club Foundation for the continued funding of the Club Support Program. The Club Support Program was rolled out in 2016 with all 22 MPNFL clubs receiving access to the Sports Chaplaincy Australia Club Care Access and SALT Education program. In addition to the Club Access program, the 2018 program will see the delivery of Mental Health and Well-Being sessions. Further details will be sent to clubs in the next week. To everyone involved in our football and netball clubs I wish you all good luck for season 2018.

AFL Vic Country AFL VIC COUNTRY WELCOME TO SEASON 2018 As the cooler months start to creep in and daylight savings comes to an end, excitement is brewing across country Victoria for the return of community football. Whether you are playing, coaching, umpiring, volunteering or cheering on your team from the sidelines, the month of April brings with it a feeling of optimism and anticipation for what lies ahead for season 2018. The rapid growth in female football has continued to reach new heights, with the establishment of 392 new teams in 2017 bringing the total number of female teams to 747 across the state. We look forward to seeing more females pull on the boots and showcase their skills throughout country Victoria the year. Season 2018 will see the roll out of a number of new initiatives, including the implementation of the AFL’s new NAB AFL Auskick 2.0 program, an expanded Victorian FIDA Football League competition for players with an intellectual disability, as well as the acquisition of seven dedicated full time V/Line Umpire Academy Program Managers who are now responsible for driving umpire development regionally. The work carried out by Region Commissions, in conjunction with leagues and clubs, to embrace these initiatives, along with the many other programs conducted across the state is vital to ensuring country football is in good stead for continued growth in the future. Country football’s contribution to the national game was strengthened last year, with 26 male and six female players from regional Victoria drafted to AFL and AFLW clubs.

In other football news, AFL Victoria is delighted to announce the return of the WorkSafe AFL Victoria Community Championships at the MCG. For the second year in a row, the highest ranked country representative match will be played at the MCG as part of the 2018 AFL Country Game between Geelong and Essendon. The Ballarat Football Netball League and Goulburn Valley League (7 v 8) will run out on the hallowed turf in season 2018, while the leagues’ Under 19 representative matches will be played at Punt Road Oval. In addition, the current number-one-ranked Geelong Football Netball League will be looking to secure its third straight Community Championships title when it lines up against the Eastern Football League at Etihad Stadium. The match will be a curtain raiser to the Round 9 AFL game between St. Kilda and Collingwood on Saturday night. This is a fantastic occasion for some of community football’s best senior players to run out and showcase their skills on the game’s biggest stage and provide the opportunity for city and country football fans to come together and celebrate all that is good in country football. Last but not least I would like to wish all players, coaches, umpires, volunteers and administrators the best of luck for the season ahead- I hope it is a successful one for all involved.

AFL Victoria Country Football & Development Manager Stephen O’Donohue

This achievement is a credit to both the talent pathway programs and the local community clubs which continue to provide the foundation for the next generation of stars to reach the elite level.

Footy Preview Long rivals ready for a new beginning By David Nagel A mouth-watering ‘Battle of the Creek’ and the latest chapter in the ongoing rivalry between Cranbourne and Narre Warren – does local footy get any better than this? It’s a great start to the season with teams that are expected to fill four of the five finals positions battling it out for early-season bragging rights. And for the remaining teams – Doveton, Officer, Pakenham and Tooradin – it provides the ideal opportunity to put an early marker down for the season ahead. Sorry Doves – but never in recent history has there appeared a better time for the Kangaroos, Lions and Seagulls to break the stranglehold of the top five of the last three years. So where do we start? Two-time Narre Warren premiership coach Matt Shinners makes his return to coaching against impressive Good Friday winners Cranbourne at Casey Fields. Shinners is not only a dual-title winner but widely regarded as one of the best development coaches in the business, a trait he will need to call on in 2018. The Magpies have experience to burn with Michael Collins, Josh Tonna, Nick Scanlon, Trent Cody and Dylan Quirk all stars of the local game, but you get the feeling they will need an injection of youth if they are to bridge the gap on their grand final conqueror Berwick. The inclusion of two stars of the past in Brad Scalzo and Trent Shinners will certainly make some inroads, but it’s the Magpies ability to match the like of Berwick and Cranbourne for pace that will make all the difference at season’s end. Youngsters like Tom Miller, Brent Urwin and Jack Toner might prove to be important cogs as the season rolls on. The Magpies take on a Cranbourne team that looked electric against Doveton last week, bookending the game with a brilliant start and finish.

Cranbourne speedster Luke Bee-Hugo would love nothing better than a victory against Narre Warren today. The Eagles piled on an eight-goal first term and then rubbed salt into the wound with a 9.2 to 2.1 final quarter. Kirk Dickson had his best senior game at the club booting six goals, with speedsters Luke-Bee Hugo and former junior Clay McCartney joining ruckman Micky Boland with three goals apiece. The Eagles look set to play some really exciting footy this year, with Tommy Marks, Anthony Vella, Dylan Cavalot and Zak Roscoe all players that love to take the game on. The Magpies won’t be pushovers but expect the Eagles to gain a small amount of revenge for last year’s preliminary final defeat with a three-goal victory. Berwick begins the season as a thoroughly-deserved short-priced favourite but will need to play close to its best footy when Beaconsfield arrives at Edwin Flack Reserve for the ‘Battle of the Creek’. The Wickers last lost a game of serious footy on grand final day 2016 – leaving a sick feeling in the guts that inspired them to great levels last season.

Footy Preview First-year coach Stewart Kemperman rammed home the message all season, ‘be harder for longer’ and his players never did disappoint. It was a beautifully orchestrated season from Kemperman and his crew, always looking to improve and tinker slightly with a dominant game plan. They simply stayed ahead of the pack – never standing still and always looking to be one step ahead of their opposition. “We’re always looking to improve, to change a few little things to make us better and refine what we did from last year,” Kemperman said. “There’s no hiding from the fact that we’re chasing backto-back and I know the guys better now and what they’re capable of. Our foot skills have been really sharp at training, we identified that as an area for improvement, and we’ve personalised the fitness plans for players and the results have been pleasing.” The Wickers lose some real grunt through the midfield with Micky Harold and Jimmy Magner missing, while live-wire forward/midfielder Jimmy Harrison continues his blossoming career in a Pakenham jumper. Rumour has it that Michael Johnson may also be vacant this year, leaving a few holes for the Wickers to fill. But in comes some pure class in the form of Travis Tuck, a born-and-bred Berwick commodity that finally makes its way home after succeeding at elite levels around the country. Tuck is deceptively tall and as strong as an ox so don’t expect the reigning champs to drop away in the toughness stakes in a hurry. Beaconsfield will bring a fresh look into this match. The Eagles’ key goal-kickers over the last couple of years haven’t exactly been forward-pressure beasts, with Beau Dowler and Troy McDermott lacking that elite level of leg speed. And leg speed is something they need against the Wickers who possess the most damaging run-and-carry backline in the business. Sean Dwyer and Mitch Wallace are classy recruits, as are the returning Johnston brothers, but it’s the signing of Nathan Langley can could make or break the Eagles this season. Langley didn’t have his heart in it when he last played in the SEFNL but has had a better preparation and looks set for a big year. What a confidence booster it would be to kick a bag against the champs and lead his side home to victory. But it’s the Wickers to get the job done by 13 points. What an intriguing contest we have at Starling Road, where Officer and Doveton do battle in a fixture that very rarely ends in a blowout.

8

Trent Cody will need to shine for Narre Warren to down Cranbourne at Casey Fields today. And this – although early – could be a critical result when finals passes are handed out in late August. Doug Koop has some fresh faces to work with at Officer this year, with Ben Curtiss, Steve Heppel and Matt Laskey sure to give the likes of Ben Tivendale and Matty Clarke a healthy chop out. The Kangas have also picked up some solid and consistent types, with Cranbourne-pair Michael Thompson and Blake Pearce joining Beaconsfield’s Jayce Valentine on an improving list. “All our recruits have fitted in really well and will bring extra experience that we have previously been lacking,” Koop said. “The combination of our developing group from last season, some new recruits and a couple of very handy younger players stepping up is very exciting for the club in 2018.” Brad Thompson is also a player that can be given a specific task and his return could add a goal or two of value each Saturday. Doveton – well it was terrible against Cranbourne last week, starting and finishing the contest with no intensity whatsoever.

www.aflsoutheast.com.au

Footy Preview Expect the likes of Jake Dermott, Russ Gabriel and Matt Stapleton to hit the contest a lot harder against the Kangas. This one’s a flip of the coin – we’ll go for Officer by three points. And the spotlight will quite literally be on Pakenham and Tooradin-Dalmore when the two sides collide under lights at Toomuc Reserve on Saturday night. The Lions really are the unknown commodity this year after losing a stack of class and experience and replacing them with players not well known to local footy lovers. Jimmy Harrison is all class from Berwick while Joseph Thomas-Baker is a mobile big man who is sure to make his presence felt this winter. But what we get from the rest of their recruits - we’ll have to wait and see! The Seagulls have picked up a couple of handy types in Dean Warry and Matt Sloper from Crib Point, but lose prime movers Nathan Page and Josh Muling to the Amateurs. Gun ruckman Aisakie O’hAilpin has also left the pier at Westernport. For either team to have any ambition of playing finals footy they must win this – and the Seagulls seem better prepared to take that opportunity. They’ll win – by 23 points.

Joining our coaching team in 2018 is Brad Lord (Reserves), Laurie Hughes (u/19’s) and Michael McDonald (Women’s) and we thank them for the work they have put in over the pre-season and for the many hours they will spend developing our playing group going forward. Paul ‘Wispy’ Hamilton continues as Reserves coach, as does Shane ‘Grubbo’ Dwyer again taking charge of our Under 19s. Our coaches are all life members of our club and each with outstanding football credentials. Narre’s seniors have retained most of our core playing group, with just a few refinements from 2017. Cranbourne After a great start to the season for our seniors and reserves at Doveton on Good Friday, we take on our old rivals in Narre Warren at Casey Fields. Back to last week and our reserves looked impressive with a 164-point win against an undermanned Doveton side. With strong games from Jordan Leinmueller, Aaron Bower, Nick Russo and Shaun Keenan, our guys kicked the day off in style. This week however won’t be the stroll

16

in the park as it was last Friday. The seniors jumped out of the blocks and basically this quarter set up the game as far as the result went. Our slick and accurate movement of the footy was a pleasure to watch and OB has got the boys fit and working well together. While our second and third weren’t to the same standard as the first, it was our ability to finish the game off in the last that saw us romp to an 83-point win. Kirk Dickson with 6 and Avatar and Clay with 4 led the goalkickers while debutants Corey Ellison and Jarryd Barker also contributed to the goals. Added to these two 17-year olds was Luca Bellinvia who also played his first senior game, and the youth of our club is looking very strong. None of these boys looked out of place in the win. Best for us were Dicko, Dill Bass, Waters and Vella. As mentioned, this week we welcome Narre Warren to Casey Fields in what will be a great day of footy and netball. Go Eagles!!

Doveton Not the ideal start to the season for the Doves last week as we ran into a hot Cranbourne on Good Friday. But it was a great day for the club in many ways with a big crowd welcoming the footy and netball back for 2018. Thank you to the many volunteers who helped out on the day – your efforts never go unappreciated. This week it’s off to Officer to take on Doug Koop and his Kangaroos. We know we need to improve to take home the four points but that is certainly our intention. Let’s take some great form into next week’s home game against Pakenham. Go Doves!

Tooradin-Dalmore Another summer full of hope and expectation comes to fruition tonight when the mighty Seagulls run out for the big clash against Pakenham. Our players, coaches, committee and volunteers have worked tirelessly to make sure we are well prepared to take on all challenges this season. We welcome the new faces to the club and wish our departures all the best for the future. Lachie Gillespie and his coaching staff have done a wonderful job in preparing the boys for the big game tonight – now let’s go out and make it happen. Fly high you Seagulls!

Around the Grounds

White

Here’s a few little snippets from around the grounds last weekend. Former Pakenham Gazette Sports Editor Brad ‘Tangles’ Kingsbury was reunited with one of the former players he used to write about at Bonbeach on Good Friday. Tangles is a part of the furniture at Bonbeach these days, he lives just around the corner, but he had time to reflect as he ran into former Doveton hard-man Stuart Batten. Stuey famously told Tangles he would belt him if he wrote any more bad stories about Doveton – so Tangles stopped immediately! Stuey and his father – another legendary Doveton-man Bert – were also snapped on the boundary line as they waited for the big game between Bonbeach and Edithvale-Aspendale to start. Both Stuey and Bert were proud as punch as Stuey’s boy Lachie kicked three goals on debut for Edi-Asp in their 33-point victory over the Sharks. In other news, the South East Juniors begin next week with four divisions of girls football pointing to the rapid growth of the game. We were lucky enough to get nearly 50 of the excited youngsters along for a photo opportunity at Casey Fields a couple of weeks back. And to finish - yes it may be a little self-congratulatory – but what a feeling for the Records footy and netball scribe to throw a 180 on the dart board at home last week. After some lessons from local legend Ronnie Bright – the maximums are sure to come flowing thick and fast from this point forward!

It’s all about culture for Whitecross By David Nagel Culture at sporting clubs – if you could find the secret and bottle it, and then sell it at supermarkets you would become a multi-millionaire in no time. It is the secret ingredient that all clubs are looking for and one that new Beaconsfield coach Kelly Whitecross is hoping will take the Eagles to new heights in the South East Football Netball League this season. Whitecross, who takes over the reins as A grade and Senior coach at Beaconsfield from Simon O’Shanassy, believes creating culture at a club is the ultimate key to success. “It can take so long to build - and it is so quick to destroy, it really is what makes a successful club tick, “said Whitecross, who took on the role at Beacy late last year. “Not long after I was appointed I had the opportunity to speak with Liz Ellis, the former Australian captain, and her advice to any new coach is to work on culture first, to make sure you are a team both on and off the court. “We have done a lot of work on that during the preseason, and we’ll be a team that is ready to go in round one against Berwick.” Whitecross, married with two children to Hawthorn footballer Brendan, has had a passion for netball since beginning her journey as a nine-year-old at Jells Park in Waverley. She started with the Knox Region Netball Club on cold asphalt courts as she remembers, not like the magnificent facilities that abound today. Whitecross was a talented player, captaining carnival sides at interstate level. But a reality soon hit home. “I don’t know if you’ve noticed but I’m five-foot-one, not ideal for someone looking to pursue a netball career,” she says with a smile. “So, I decided to take up coaching.” Whitecross worked her way through the ranks, working alongside some great coaching minds like Gillian Lee and picking their brains for experience. She progressed, being awarded a V-Line State Distinction Award from Netball Victoria for developing a pathway program for rep netballers to make it to State League teams. She recently had a five-year break from netball to have two children but returned to coaching in 2017 after receiving a call from Monash Storm President Shane O’Sullivan. Whitecross will continue in the development role that she started with the Storm last year, who will now be rebranded ‘The Hawks’ in the VNL competition. Ironically, Hawthorn has become naming rights partner of ‘The Hawks’, meaning Kelly will share the same colours as her husband Brendan in her development role with the club.

22

“Yes, it’s a bit unusual, we’ve got two sets of Hawthorn uniforms in the house now, as well as Beaconsfield,” she said. Kelly said her, and her family were looking forward to participating and enjoying a football/netball club experience. “We wanted a cultural experience with netball, somewhere we can take the family on a Saturday and enjoy the day together,” she said. “And we couldn’t have found a nicer bunch of people to share it with, the whole family has been greeted with open arms from both the football and netball side of things.” Kelly said she was looking forward to sharing in some of the history of Beaconsfield. “I was talking to a girl the other day, Caity Budge, and she’s been playing netball at Beaconsfield for the last 18 years,” she said. “To me that’s a big part of Beaconsfield history and something I’m really looking to immerse myself in. And Shelley Ziesler, there’s a girl who could own the record for the most games at Beaconsfield by the end of the season. “I think understanding that culture, that history, and getting the best out of what we have at the club is going to be one of the most enjoyable aspects of coaching this year.” Culture – there’s that magical word again!

Kelly Whitecross is the new head coach at the Beaconsfield Netball Club.

Berwick pays respect to past great Jim Alan On Saturday the raising of our 2017 premiership flags will take place. To our great coaches and players, a big thank you, which is extended to our trainers, team managers, runners and all behind the scene contributors in various areas that create a successful and enjoyable club. This week our players will wear black armbands as a mark of respect to Jim Alan, a club stalwart, who passed away in January, aged 92. He arrived as a star player in 1946 and was the outstanding full back in our 1954 premiership team. Jim retired as a player in 1958 but he continued as a behind the scenes worker, granting the club service as secretary and president and was awarded life membership in 1961. For several seasons during the sixties he coached our then under-17 team. Jim was involved in many community organisations, Montuna Golf Club, Beaconhills College, Rotary Club, Anglican Church and the Masonic Lodge. He and his family were involved in the foundation and organising of the Berwick Scout Club. Thanks to Jim many of our junior players became excellent scouts – Alan Tonks, Steve Harvey, Norm Tivendale and Phil Lewin are just some that come to mind.

Jim always kept a sharp eye on how the club was playing and would grant some advice on what they should be doing – he was a one-eyed Wicker and Magpie. He and his wife Joy always attended our past players reunions, they missed last year because of his illness. To honour Jim and his services to the club, our committee informed his family that the armbands would be worn on our first home game. RIP Jim…Go Wickers!

The spirit of Berwick. Jim Alan and his wife Joy enjoyed many great times at the club.

A History of Neighbourhood Rivalry The long-standing football rivalry between neighbours Beaconsfield and Berwick has been going on since the very first game in June 1890. This was played at Beaconsfield’s original ground in the middle of the old racecourse near where the Woolworth’s Supermarket is today. This first game which was won by Berwick resulted in some on-going disputes in the local paper over players who lined up in the opposition teams with the word ‘traitor’ being bandied about. These types of feelings persisted for many years when players changed from one of the local village teams to their neighbours. Nowadays the transfer of players is more common but there is still that sense of anticipation for this match, especially amongst the ‘Old-Timers’. The two clubs today compete for the Frank Elliot Shield and The Battle of the Creek Cup, kindly sponsored by Russell and Steve Whitney of Tip Top Roofing, who take a very keen interest in these clashes. 30 Years ago, back in 1988, Berwick had re-joined the local South West Gippsland Football League (SWGFL) after a five-year stint in the VFA. Of course, their first match back was against the old rivals in Beaconsfield at Beacy, which proved an excellent contest won by the home side by 13 points in front of a large crowd. The clubs met again in July, in Beaconsfield’s first visit to Edwin Flack Reserve, and they obviously didn’t handle the short trip being thrashed by 84 points. Below are details from those two meetings along with the final SWGFL ladders from 1988 which show clearly the dominant teams were Cranbourne and Doveton who finished top two in all grades.

A regional approach to umpiring It has been a long off season and now we are finally here for the opening round of 2018. While all clubs have been carefully preparing their playing lists in the hope of premiership glory, the umpires have also been eagerly awaiting the first bounce of the season. Season 2018 brings a new direction for umpiring within the AFL South East commission. Umpiring has long been managed by the Southern Umpires Association (SUA), with dedicated volunteers leading the strategy, coaching and management of umpiring throughout the region. During the off-season AFL South East and Southern Umpires Association reached an agreement to hand over these responsibilities to the AFL South East Commission. Through this agreement I have been appointed as the Regional Director of Umpiring and I am pleased to advise that Leigh Buwalda has been appointed as an Umpire Development Coordinator to help with the recruitment, retention and development of umpires. Leigh and I both look forward to working with all umpires, and in particular building strong relationships with clubs across the six junior and senior leagues serviced by umpiring. I am pleased to advise of the coaches that have been appointed for season 2018. Dave Golby has been appointed as the Head Coach of Umpiring. Dave will be supported by Field Coaches Brett Gent and Dale Armstrong, Boundary Coach Adam Holland and Goal Coach Troy Bellchambers.

These coaches will all be well supported by numerous assistant coaches and observers who will be there to support the development of umpires throughout the region. Umpire training continues to be based out of Kananook Reserve, Kananook, while in the South East umpiring has a new home at Carlisle Park in Cranbourne. Umpire training is every Monday and Wednesday night and anyone interested in getting involved is welcome to attend. As we embark on the opening rounds of season 2018, I wish all clubs the very best for the season ahead. I also want to take this chance to thank all umpires for their involvement this year and wish everyone an enjoyable season. Carl Fletcher AFLSE Regional Director of Umpiring

Netball Preview By David Nagel The fresh hope and excitement of a new netball season is once again upon us with eight clubs hopeful of going all the way to the grand final in 2018. Of course the unique nature of the SEFNL netball competition means there are 10 opportunities for clubs to bask in premiership glory – from A Grade all the way to the 13s. It provides a wonderful opportunity for developing players to get a taste of playing under pressure, and for those past their best it’s a great chance to drift down the grades and still have an impact. SEFNL really is one of the premier netball competitions for providing opportunities to its players. One team that didn’t take its opportunities on the Easter weekend was Cranbourne, who went down 36-27 to Doveton in what most would consider a surprising result. Speaking to the Record prior to that game, Cranbourne coach Donna Wilson was excited about the season ahead after going all the way to the preliminary final last year. Now entering her third year at the helm, Wilson said the club had exceeded its expectations in 2017. “Last year we really wanted to make finals after finishing sixth the year before and we went a lot further than anyone would have anticipated,” Wilson said. “Obviously if we’re going to improve that would mean making the grand final but if that doesn’t happen we’re going to have a lot of fun along the way. We take a lot of confidence out of how we finished last year, and we’ve addressed a couple of areas that needed working on.” The Eagles identified that they needed more height with their goalers and recruited Kasey Teakle from Inverloch, a tall, very strong and agile performer who will cause opposition defenders some headaches. Tegan Robertson is a talented and quick midcourter who has made her way up from B Grade, while Tayla Stahl – the twin sister of goaler Tegan – will hit the courts again after a lengthy break. While still not settled on her final squad for the year, Wilson is extremely positive about some improvement for the season ahead. “I think we’ll be very competitive again, we’re a very tightknit group which is something that has developed over a couple of seasons,” she said. Cranbourne’s assignment today is against Narre Warren – a perennial powerhouse of the competition over the last few years. But the Magpies are looking a lot different this season with coaches Sharon Phillips and Richard Hammond taking over from the hugely successful Greg and Jade Heinrich. The Magpies have lost talent across the court, with Kara Hargrave and Tracey Dell leaving the defensive end, Leigh Taylor through the middle, while goalers Gabby Dwyer and Tayla Shannon are nowhere to be seen on the list.

Jess Cox played a pivotal role in Tooradin-Dalmore’s 2017 premiership success.

But the loss of those great players does open up opportunities for others. Skipper Erin Clark and her deputy Britt Mashado are proven dynamos through the midcourt, while players like Kealeigh Brown, Corrina Emery, Jemma Osborne and Caity Stephens are going to enjoy more court time and added responsibility. These girls have learnt from the best over the years and will be keen to put those learnings into practice. This will be a close one – let’s go for the Eagles to win by two goals. Beaconsfield coach Kelly Whitecross will be keen to get things off to a great start when her Eagles take on Berwick at Edwin Flack Reserve. The Eagles have also got some fresh faces this year, but still have that core group that has served them so well. Danni Cameron is one of the more determined defenders in the league, Rylee Nelson and Zoe Mason talented through the midcourt, while Bianca Sanzaro has scored that many goals it’s not funny in the blue and gold.

Netball Preview And the Eagles welcome back a star. Kaela Hughes was the dominant player in the competition in 2016 – winning the league best and fairest award – before injury curtailed her performance last year. But Kaela is back, adding class and culture to the Beaconsfield. “What Kaela is doing just sums up what a great culture there is here at Beaconsfield,” Whitecross said. “For her to coach juniors, then train with the squad, then play with us on Saturday is remarkable considering everything else she has on her plate. She has VNL duties, is training to be a paramedic, she really is setting a fine example for the rest of the girls to follow.” Berwick coach Robynn Pym is experienced and will have her girls organised – but Beacy should be too good. In other games, ROC captain Mel Overdyk will look to carry her early-season form in front of the green-screen onto the court against Doveton. Overdyk was the star performer in an AFL South East promotional video a few weeks back, her personality shining through. If she can bring out the best in players like Zoe Callahan, Olivia Hamilton and Jamilah Ferns the Kangas might make some steady improvement in 2018. But Doveton looked impressive against Cranbourne last week and should get the choccies. And Pakenham coach Karen Meredith faces a tough assignment against last year’s premiers Tooradin-Dalmore at Toomuc Reserve.

Lorna Clark, Emma Jones and Lauren Wenn will be keen to make their mark for the Lions this year but come up against some fierce round-one opposition. The Seagulls are going to be very hard to beat once again with Alex and Jess Maher, Jess Cox and Alex Duff all looking for big seasons ahead. The Seagulls will win comfortably.

Tara Cecil will need to be at her athletic best for Cranbourne to topple Narre Warren.

Cranbourne With all teams eager to get out on the court last week on Good Friday, it was fantastic to see everyone proudly going out to play our first game of the season. Across the day all teams put in their hardest and 7 teams were able to come away with some good wins against Doveton. It was great to see all our new players to the club enjoying themselves by wearing the blue and gold. As a club we would like to congratulate Bec Sparks who played her 150th game last Friday for the club. This week we welcome Narre Warren down for our first home game for the season. Hopefully it is going to be a great day with the sun shining so that all of our teams can cheer each other on throughout the day. This day also is a special day for some of our players as it marks some milestones for a couple of our senior players. As a club we would like to firstly congratulate Jodie Pike who will be playing her 250th game for the club. This is a huge milestone for Jodie to reach and makes her the second player ever in the club to reach this many senior games. We also have another player reaching a milestone amount of games for the club, we would like to congratulate Tegan Stahl for playing her 50th game for the club. As a club we would like to thank some of our 2018 player sponsors for their support this year - Abcon Concrete Constructions, Allcaulk, Premier Builders Group and Ashmore Excavations. Thank you for your support this year. Good luck to all teams today. Fly High Mighty Eagles!

A.K.

What a great day of netball we experienced against pakenham mbaptistchurch.org Paternoster Cranbourne last week with many close games making it an exciting day of competition. Well done to all the girls who competed so wonderfully well for the club – it was great to watch the level of commitment that you showed. And well done to Liz Edwards and our A Grade team for a great job in the main game. We have a very young list but the enthusiasm the girls showed will soon be contagious right through the club. We take on ROC this week on the magnificent courts at Starling Road. Let’s go Doves!

A Message from AFLSE RGM John Anderson An AFL South East Commission Review into its staff and management structure has resulted in the position of ‘AFLSE - South East Leagues Manager’ being made redundant. Regrettably, the review of roles has resulted in the incumbent in the position, Liz Triffitt, leaving the organisation. I would like to thank Liz for the valuable contribution she has made to AFLSE during her three-year tenure with the Commission. In particular Liz has played a key role in the formation and success of the South Eastern Women’s Football competition, and her leadership of the South East Football Netball League (SEFNL) is also highly regarded. Liz has been respected across all the leagues she has managed and I wish her well in the next stage of her professional career. Because of the review, and the position being made redundant, some structural changes to AFLSE will be implemented. All SEFNL enquiries will now be directed through AFLSE Senior Football Operations Manager Haydn Parsons and Netball Operations Manager Samantha Downie.

Liz Triffitt Haydn’s contact details are: email – haydn@aflse.com.au; phone 0401 833 650 Sam’s contact details are: email – netball@aflse.com.au; phone 0403 316 019 Kind Regards John Anderson

RAMPANT RAYS WITH BACK TO BACK WINS Despite a scare or two along the way, the Dandenong Southern Stingrays knocked up another win a 24-point victory over Gippsland Power on Good Friday in front of a massive crowd at Morwell. The Stingrays were determined to give the big Morwell crowd a good show with their attacking, hard-nosed brand of football. The final result was set up off the back of a truly emphatic last quarter from Dandenong, booting six goals to two with Jai Nanscawen having a highlight game kicking six majors for the day. “We were on to the boys about starting well, Gippy at home is probably one of the hardest games in the TAC Cup and we feel like it really was today,” said coach Craig Black post-match. “I was proud of the boys, they stuck with each other for the entire game…both clubs coming off a five-day break was probably going to come down to who was able to finish with legs at the end of the day. “The wind played havoc across the day, I’ll give the chocolates to the Power on the way they transitioned the ball, but Angus Patterson probably intercepted most of their entries- he definitely caused them a headache.” The dominant Dandenong side was full of individual stand-outs, but none more so than 18-year-old small forward Jai Nanscawen, who slammed on six goals, with three in a row in the last quarter in a superb display of forward-line pressure. Not to be outdone, Bailey Williams continued on his goal kicking tally, booting two- with his marking around the ground a highlight reel on its own. Captain Mitch Riordan was again everywhere, giving the Stingrays some dash out of the middle, while Zac Foot and James Hickey collected clearances and inside-50s like they were going out of fashion. The game was electrifying in the first term, with both clubs having opportunities. The Stingrays probably had the lion’s share of possession and having more impact with it on the scoreboard in a low scoring first term. Dandenong was sharing the ruck duties through Bailey Williams, Riley Bowman, Bailey Schmidt and Stephen Cumming all ensuring their teammates got first use of the ball.

42

Gippsland were well drilled and scrambled to get the ball inside 50 quickly, but shallow entries and quick kicks allowed for easy pickings for the taller Stingrays defence. After conceding the first goal of the game to the Power the Stingrays managed the next two through Nanscawen and Bowman to hold a 12- point lead at the first change. The second quarter was an even affair with both sides kicking three goals apiece to close out the quarter with a slightly decreased margin of 10 points at the main break. The Stingrays knew that they couldn’t afford to get complacent and let the Power back into this match (one of the key messages at the long break), but as the ball bounced and the wind died the Power kicked two unanswered goals in the third quarter, taking the lead by a point at three quarter time with the large home crowd on their feet. With a little bit of niggle at the end, the biggest spray and in your face challenge came from the coaching staff pleading to players to refocus and once again to lift their intensity and play team football. This paved the way for 18-year-old Nanscawen, who showed no mercy for the Power backmen booting three goals in the space of five minutes to put the game beyond doubt. Gippsland refused to give in and fought to the bitter end, but in the end, resistance was futile, and the final margin was 24 points. The TAC Cup has a scheduled triple header this weekend at Queen Elizabeth Oval for all six country teams on Saturday. The Stingrays game will be at 12.30pm against Greater Western Victorian Rebels. Gippsland Power 1.1-7 4.3-27 6.3-39 8.4-52 Dandenong Stingrays 2.7-19 5.7-37 5.8-38 11.10-76 Stingrays Goals: J. Nanscawen 6, B. Williams 2, A. Darling, M. Cottrell, R. Bowman. Best: A. Paterson, M. Riordan, J. Nanscawen, Z. Foot, B. Williams, R. Bowman.

The Stingrays under-16s kick-started the day against Gippsland Power.
