Berwick v Narre Warren Beaconsfield v Cranbourne Doveton v Pakenham Officer v Tooradin-Dalmore

The sharing of real-life experiences Kicking a great goal, taking a spectacular mark, or showing nerves of steel to steer a netball team to victory are just some of the joys of being part of a sporting club. But they are just the joys of playing sport – surely the biggest joy of being involved in a sporting club is the sharing of real-life experiences. In recent times we’ve seen why clubs are so important to the community, why they can help significantly with the highs and lows that life can throw our way. But it’s not just clubs alone, the entire sporting community will rally in times of need. At Beaconsfield, the rallying of support for young netballer Ciara Nelson has been amazing, with the local community raising more than $145,000 to allow Ciara the best possible treatment to remove a rare malignant brain tumour. The local community donated $105,000 with Gembrook MP Brad Battin stepping up with a plan to raise the remaining $30,000 required in 30 days – the plan surpassed by $10,000. The 18-year-old had a five-hour operation recently, and the entire SEFNL community has its fingers crossed that her future will shine as brightly as the big and beautiful smile that adorns her face. When it comes to football – Cranbourne and Narre Warren have had some ugly stoushes over the years. But you wouldn’t have guessed it at Casey Fields last week when the two clubs rallied to offer assistance to Cranbourne youngster Nick Darbyshire. Mid-way through the second quarter Darbyshire laid on the ground convulsing, not one person at the ground sure what was happening. The medical staff of both clubs worked wonderfully together, stabilising Nick until an ambulance arrived. Darbyshire still has some tests to go through – but the work of both clubs could quite seriously have saved his life. And it’s not just in SEFNL where the community support runs free. The well-documented cancer battle of local media icon, Andrew ‘Toe Punt’ Kelly, has seen an outpouring of support on the Mornington Peninsula, resulting in a group of Toe Punt’s mates joining forces to organise a fundraiser for his family. Over $20,000 was raised as Frankston Park opened its doors, and the local community its heart, to support a man that has given so much to the local game over a near 30year journey. At Bonbeach on Good Friday, Edithvale-Aspendale and Bonbeach paid tribute to Stacee McInnes, a young girl entering the prime of her life before passing away in her dad’s arms at the age of 20. A broken ankle would see a blood clot develop in Stacee’s body and end the life of a much-loved member of the community. Her family, well they’re so grateful for the ongoing support of the Edi-Asp Netball Club – a club founded to play sport but always there to support its own.

“Being her family we obviously have our up and down days, but I thought everyone else would forget about Stacee over time and move on,” said Stacee’s mother Roslyn. “But to have this game named in Stacee’s honour and to have a medal named after her is fantastic, it brings us all together and it’s just a wonderful gesture. “It’s fantastic, all her friends played footy for Edi-Asp and the girls made so many friends through athletics, and they all played for the Aspendale Arrows, we’ve been heavily involved in the community. “Everyone just loved her, she was the mascot, the glue for all the girls and her four older sisters. To see what the club has done for Stacee makes the family feel extremely special.” The Karingal Football Netball Club held a minute silence last Saturday, prior to the senior game against Langwarrin, to pay tribute to one of its own in Luke Duhig, his life taken so short of its prime in the off-season. The sight of players, coaches, administrators, supporters and volunteers from both clubs paying tribute to Luke brought strong feeling to the surface – and reinforced that every member of a sporting club is loved and so important. Both clubs were simply sharing another real-life experience. David Nagel

A host of community football clubs in regional Victoria will welcome the return of the WorkSafe Game of the Month in season 2018. Introduced with great success in 2003, the WorkSafe Game of the Month has become a flagship event in the season calendar. It not only highlights the strength of country football and netball, but also the importance of workplace safety in our communities. This year is set to be bigger and better than ever, with 10 exciting WorkSafe Games of the Month planned in leagues across the state, with our first event kicking off in the Warrnambool & District Football Netball League on April 22. WorkSafe AFL Victoria Country partners with Netball Victoria across all Game of the Month events to bring some of football’s and netball’s biggest names to meet the locals and share their sporting stories. Current day AFL players and netball personalities are set to appear in season 2018.

Good luck to all teams participating. AFL Victoria Country Football and

Footy Preview Can the Magpies make their mark? By David Nagel It’s lucky Anzac Day is fast approaching with tipsters in the South East Football Netball League needing some serious two-up skills to pick today’s four winners. Seriously, where do you start? The obvious place is at Edwin Flack Reserve where Narre Warren host Berwick in a re-match of last year’s grand final. Sorry, are you confused? This was originally a Narre Warren home game but moved to Edwin Flack Reserve to cater for the new Narre Warren clubrooms being built at Fox Road. The new facility should be built in the coming weeks providing the Magpies with a brilliant new place to call home. But that will the last thing on the minds of Matt Shinners and his coaching staff as they look to achieve something that no team has been able to for 19 games – unravel Berwick. The Wickers are a slick outfit, no doubt, and are the clear front-runners to take this year’s crown. Shinners acknowledges they are a tough team to break down. “We need to combat their midfield for a start, that’s where they gain so much drive and they’ve got some great players in there,” Shinners said. “The amount of ground Madi Andrews covers is just phenomenal and then you’ve got blokes like (Bryce) Rutherford, (Travis) Tuck and (Ash) Smith that roll through there as well. They just wear you down Berwick, they play a fast pace both ways and normally roll over the top teams in the second half.” Shinners said he knows where his team had to improve to catch last year’s grand final conqueror. “We went back to grass roots in the pre-season, got a fitness coach in and really pushed the players to get fitter and stronger,” he said. “We’ve had a massive turnover of players and got a lot of young blokes now, similar to Cranbourne, so I think we’ve improved in the leg-speed department.

Travis Tuck leaves the Johnston boys in his wake during his debut for Berwick “But this is the ultimate test because, as I said, they wear you down Berwick.” The Magpies were lucky to be so close to Cranbourne at quarter time last week, the Eagles kicking 1.9 to 2.3 for the term, before the Magpies responded with 13 goals to nine after the first break. “If they had kicked straight it would have put us seriously behind the eight ball, but they had a game up their sleeve and looked a little more organised than we did in the early stages,” Shinners said. “We’ve got some new set plays that we needed to bed in and we butchered the ball in the first quarter but got better in both of those areas after quarter time. “If we played really well and only won by that much (16 points) I would probably be concerned but there’s definitely plenty of room for improvement.” There were a lot of positive signs for the Magpies last week.

7

Footy Preview They won without any great influence from their two star recruits, Trent Shinners and Brad Scalzo, while Liam Myatt was impressive after his first pre-season for a long time after a knee reconstruction. Jack Toner, Pete Gentile and Cory Machaya were lively up forward while Col McNamara relished being back in the thick of the action. And Nick Scanlon’s four goals against the best defender in the business, Brandon Osborne, also points to a big year in front of the big sticks. It will be an intriguing contest this one, to see how the Magpies stack up against the best – but it’s the Wickers to win by 19 points. Cranbourne travels to Beaconsfield today, hoping for a normal day at the office after a strange one against Narre Warren last week. It wasn’t your typical Saturday afternoon at the footy at Casey Fields. A flock of birds - let’s call them parrots for the purpose of this story – numbering several hundred flew across the ground as the senior players ran out for their warm up at three-quarter-time in the reserves. The noise they made was quite remarkable, but their aim was off with no white stains seen on any clothing in the near vicinity afterwards. But what it did seem to do was put a curse on Cranbourne in the first half of footy. The Eagles started slowly, conceding goals to Machaya and Jake Richardson, before gaining control of the footy in the first quarter. Shaun Marusic was the dominant midfielder on the ground, driving the Eagles forward and using his unique height to take several intercept marks. But inaccuracy stifled their attempts to build a winning lead, kicking nine points straight before Ryan Jones dribbled one through from close range at the 26-minute of the quarter. And then came a scary second-quarter incident involving Eagles youngster Nick Darbyshire. Narre Warren had just kicked a goal to the BerwickCranbourne Road end of Casey Fields, the ball relayed back to the central umpire who halted play when Darbyshire started convulsing on the ground. His Cranbourne teammates were visibly upset as medical staff from both teams tried to come to grips with the situation. Play was stopped for approximately 15 minutes and – not surprisingly – the Eagles were a flat unit for the remainder of the quarter. The Magpies were relentless, kicking 4.3 to 0.3 to open up a 23-point lead – a lead they would not relinquish all day. Micky Boland was sterling in the ruck for the Eagles and his contest with Scotty Meyer will go a long way towards deciding the outcome of the match. The Osborne brothers, Brandon and Glenn, were joined by Stu Morrish in a dour defensive effort. Beacy did create 20 scoring opportunities against Berwick

8

Cranbourne ruckman Michael Boland gets set for Saturday showdown with Scott Meyer last week but was inefficient in front of goals. Nathan Langley was held goalless in his first outing for the club and won’t find things any easier today. Fancy taking on Brandon Osborne to try and find a bit of form! Daniel Johnston, Jackson Thomas, James Munro and Kyle O’Sullivan were all impressive for Beacy last week and will need to reproduce to get the job done. This really is a flip of the coin – we’ll go for Cranbourne in a close one. A top-four clash between Officer and Tooradin is something we’re not accustomed to over the years but that’s the reality at Starling Road this afternoon. Both teams were impressive last week, Officer with 21 goals to six against Doveton after quarter time while the Seagulls were good early before fading against Pakenham. On that form, expect the Seagulls to lead early and the Kangas to come with a rush. Officer coach Doug Koop has won premierships before and knows the qualities of a good team. He was not happy with the back-slapping at half-time against the Doves last week and let his players know it. “Be relentless, be professional, do the business, then the smiles can begin.” It was classic Koop.

www.aflsoutheast.com.au

Footy Preview Matty Clarke was sensational with six goals while Ben Tivendale and Jake Ingaliso drifted forward for four of their own. A Tivendale left-footer on the run in the third term showed the 300-gamer has still got it. Tooradin played a slick brand of footy against the Lions last week, but just became a little confused after half time. Their best was brilliant, their worst very poor – Lachie Gillespie will be working overtime to find the balance. Julian Suarez took some telling marks when the Lions were surging last week, while the class of Andrew Dean and Nick Lang stood out like a beacon under the bright lights. What a cracking contest and a tough one to predict – who really wants that 2-0 start to the season. The Kangas will get there by 11 points. And Doveton host Pakenham in a game that both will be expecting to win. The Doves have been poor over their first fortnight of footy while the Lions showed true grit to lift themselves off the canvas against Tooradin last week. They went down, but they went down fighting. Effort will be the key in this one, who wants it most will come away with the four points. Matt Stapleton, Russ Gabriel and Jake Dermott will need big games for the Doves to win, a similar statement can be said for Steve Morey, Jimmy Harrison and Chris Cardona for the Lions. This same fixture caused some controversy last year but the prime focus this time around must be purely on the four points. Doveton will get there by under a straight kick.

Footy Notes Berwick With a large crowd, the sun out, coterie tent up firing and the unfurling of our 2017 Premiership Flag the scene was set for a big day. We were not let down. In a finals like atmosphere we took on our neighbours in the Battle of the Creek. Though we didnt have it all our way we ran out comfortable winners. Great to have Greg Talbot up there to do the unfurling, well deserved acolade. The Reserves also unfurled the 2017 Premeirship Flag with Bart jumping in for Traity who was still doing under 19 coaching duties. Great win also guys. The 19s took on a strong Beacy line up and whilst were competitive for much of the game went down by a few goals. The signs were good as this group have not all played together before and I know we will see a ton of improvement over the coming weeks. Good coaching staff so lsten up lads and you will ahead in leaps and bounds. With a lot of people away on holidays or for work we were running very lean on the day. Thanks to those who jumped behind the bar(s), empied bins and just generally gave the committe a hand. Narre this week in the GF replays for Seniors and Reserves. The Pat Sweeney shield up for grabs so good luck guys. FUNCTION ON TONIGHT Live Band: Everyone Up There

Officer This week the Officer Senior Football Club would like to welcome past players and officials for the Annual Rythdale-Cardinia, Officer & ROC Football Club Past Players & Officials Day being held in the Frank Wyatt Room overlooking Oval 1 and the Netball Courts. The day presents a great opportunity to catch up and reminisce with old team mates in good weather, whilst enjoying a beer, burger or snag. The BBQ will be firing from 1pm so come and grab one of Bert’s Gourmet Burgers. After the senior game there will be plenty of food available prepared by the current senior players. The club would also like to take the opportunity to thank all those who have helped organise the day including Rob Cousins and Gareth Sheehan and the rest of Past Players and Officials Committee. After a strong performance in Round 1 in all grades against Doveton we welcome our old foe Tooradin to Starling Rd for what is shaping to be an action-packed day. History tells us that our sides are evenly matched with both fighting it out in two close games in 2017. In addition to the footy the club is also hosting its season opener this weekend (all be it a little late) at the Pakenham Bowls Club, kicking off at 11:30am for an afternoon of Barefoot Bowls with all members and supporters welcome.

Other Important Dates Shanikas Day – 20th May Reverse Draw - 21st July On a more sombre note, this week players will be wearing black arm bands out of respect for Allan Armstrong who passed away unexpectantly on 15 January aged 58. Allan played junior and senior football with Officer, Cardinia & ROC and was known for his long raking left foot kick. Allan was a junior assistant coach for many years including the ROC Under 15 premiership winning teams in 1983 and 1991. He also played junior and senior cricket at Officer. Allan was a teacher at Officer Primary School and had teaching positions at Echuca and Dargo before taking up the role of Principal at Cardinia Primary School in 1990. He held this role ever since and almost single-handedly saved the school from closure. The Cardinia Primary School is now thriving and has become a destination school thanks to Allan, his staff and the local Cardinia community’s commitment and dedication. The entire Officer, Rythdale and Cardinia community extends its deepest sympathies to his wife Kaye, children Emily and Chris and his extended family. RIP Allan Armstrong. The club looks forward to seeing its past players and officials this weekend as we celebrate the life of Allan Armstrong. e) rocfc@icloud.com f) https://www.facebook.com/OfficerSeniorFC/ w) http://officerseniorfc.com.au/ In) https://www.instagram.com/roc_osfc/ Go Roos!!! #RespectAllFearNone

Pakenham At an awesome night for football our Under 19’s had a great win with our Reserves and Seniors not quite as fortunate but all throughout they showed great spirit. While there were solemn moments while the club remembered Tracey Magrath who passed away recently, the atmosphere for the first game of the season was terrific. With the seniors playing under lights and our first Lion Tamer’s night for the season, the crowd was large and enthusiastic. Isuzu, one of our generous sponsors, even loaned out one of their brand new utes to display at the ground (although with its great camouflage paint job, a lot of people were left wondering why we had four wheels on display!) Check out our Facebook page (Pakenham Football Netball club) and check out our up and coming media stars as well as all the latest news from around the Club. Go Pakky!

Footy Notes Cranbourne

Narre Warren

We were brought back to earth last week in a couple of ways at Casey Fields on Saturday. Firstly, Narre Warren were too good across all three games and it showed we have some work to do to be sure we stay up toward the top of the ladder in 2018. In saying that, things just didn’t quite to plan as the day unfolded. The 19s had their first game of the year and while competitive for a fair part of the game, were undone by a very good Narre outfit who will be hard to stop. Our effort at times needs to improve and we must stay switched on if we are to test these sides. Best for us in a 36-point loss were Harks, Murph, Haz, Tys, Woodall and the Mitch’s Jelo and Tharle. The twos was a funny one; one that at times we looked like world beaters and at other times we were playing more like egg beaters…. just spinning around in circles until the egg was totally beaten – as eventually we were! Too many times players are wanting to take it on themselves and go outside the team rules and we need to address this ASAP. Still not all is lost as it’s round one, or two or whatever it is!! Best for us in a 20-point loss were Archie, Bailey, Adrian Russo, Chase, Lachie and H. The senior’s match will be remembered largely for the moment that Nick Darbyshire collapsed toward the centre of the ground causing major panic across all the playing groups as well as the crowd. In what was a terrifying half hour or so, we can gladly report Nick was returned from hospital later that night but scans later this week will potentially reveal what the issue may have been. We wish Nick a quick and full recovery. On this note, our club sends our heartfelt thanks to the NWFNC and their trainers for the care they showed Nick at that point. They were first on the scene and sat by him and nursed him until the paramedics arrived, refusing to leave until the ambos got there. We have had some big rivalries between the clubs over time and it was fantastic to see the compassion from the entire NWFNC at Nick’s well-being and again we thank you all for your support and concerns. And yeah Narre won the senior game too!! As will happen when we kick 1.9 in the first quarter, you can easily find yourself dropping your heads and wondering if it is going to be your day. And it wasn’t; not helped by the injuries to Darbo, Fish (shoulder) and Moz (concussion) we had moments of magic and even though we had nine more scoring shots, we were held out by a disciplined and committed Narre side to go down by 16 points. Best for us were Jonesy, Clay, Micky B, Oz, Stuey and Yoz. Let’s all get back to our rooms after the game at Beacy this week and hopefully celebrate a few wins again. Everyone is welcome. Go Eagles!!

Narre got off to a perfect start to the season – wins over Cranbourne at Casey Fields in Seniors, Reserves and Under 19s. Our players wore black armbands to honour the memory of a lost brother - popular clubman, Ryan De Wit who died tragically in a work accident over the summer break. Three great wins. These were for you, mate. Seniors: The Seniors game was an arm wrestle early; only a couple of points in it halfway through the second term when young Cranbourne player Nick Darbyshire experienced a series of convulsions and collapsed, leading to a sustained delay awaiting an ambulance. All at Narre Warren Football Netball Club wish Nick a speedy recovery. It was great to see both clubs’ trainers and support staff come together to give him the best care possible and we are very proud of the professionalism shown by Narre’s trainers Glen, Jim, Andrew , Daniel & Brandon – the best in the business. From that point, as the game continued at frenetic pace, both teams’ fitness would be tested on the big ground. Narre’s five-goal buffer at the last change seemed enough, but Cranbourne kept coming as good sides do with a six-goal last quarter. It was the likes of Tonna, Cody, Scalzo and Myatt who had the legs for Narre to see off Cranny’s late challenge. Plenty of positives for the winners – Trent Papworth and Jesse Davies were great in the ruck against quality opponents; Matt Soz gave us enormous drive out of the back half; and our next generation of young guns in Peter Gentile, Jack Toner and Corey Machaya each had an impact. Nick Scanlon marked strongly up forward with four goals. Reserves: Narre’s Twos won a low-scoring stoush – opening up a 3-goal break in the second quarter and maintaining that advantage to the end. Brenton Wells was a standout for Narre gathering plenty of contested footy and using it creatively. Mitch Van Der Loop was impressive, and it was the leadership of experienced trio Matt Lee, Chris Collins and Daniel Jackson that set up the win. Narre will have good depth to draw on when required throughout the season. Under 19s: Taking a group of young men from a range of different places, putting them in a new environment and getting them to play our team game from Round 1 – that’s the challenge that faces our Under 19s coaches each season. On last week’s performance and six-goal win – coach Shane Dwyer and his support staff have done an outstanding job with their young group. Ten players were playing their first game for Narre; they ran and supported their teammates, moved the ball well and put their first win in the bank. Goals were shared around; Mark Bartuccio, Fabian Stellato and Jack McGuffie were among our best.

Beaconsfield This week we welcome Cranbourne to the home of the Beaconsfield football club. This week we expect another tough week of competition with some great player match ups that will create a level of excitement and no doubt some great talking points last week we had mixed results however our under 19s showed that they are a strong force again this year. Our reserves fought out the game well and really challenged until the end which was great. Our seniors matched most

All so different but all very important Leader against leader, will against will – just how will the four captains of Beaconsfield, Berwick, Cranbourne and Narre Warren influence today’s big games. Beaconsfield and Cranbourne meet at Holm Park Reserve and the two captains will have very different roles to play. Beaconsfield’s Scott Meyer is one of the great ruckman in country football.

Madi Andrews is the complete all-round midfielder, tough at the stoppages and with a huge heart that carries him to more contests than any other player in SEFNL. In fact, if we took the stat, it would be daylight to the rest of the competition.

Madi Andrews (Berwick)

Scott Meyer (Beaconsfield) Great athleticism complements the skills of an elite midfielder – Meyer really is the complete package. His role today will be to defeat Michael Boland one-on-one and maybe drift forward and hurt the Cranbourne tall with a goal or two. Osborne, a man of few words, leads Cranbourne through his amazing deeds and is the pre-eminent defender in the competition. He will look to nullify Beaconsfield recruit Nathan Langley with his strength at the contest and his remarkable closing speed. The captains of Berwick and Narre Warren, who collide at Edwin Flack Reserve, are also very different types.

Brandon Osborne (Cranbourne)

And Dylan Quirk has quickly established himself as one of the finest leaders in SEFNL, filling the huge boots of former skipper Michael Collins. It’s worth remembering that Quirk has only just turned 24 years of age when it feels like he has been at the top of his game for a much longer period. Quirk is the ultimate in-and-under warrior, strong as an ox and with the courage to put his body on the line at each contest. Four star performers, all different in so many ways – just who will have the biggest influence come 5pm this afternoon.

Dylan Quirk (Narre Warren)

Magical milestone for a born and bred Cranbourne star By David Nagel Meeting the love of your life and becoming just the second Cranbourne netballer to play 250 games would pretty much tick off a career one would have thought. But Jodie Pike – she wants a premiership! The 33-year-old, born and bred in Cranbourne, played her 250th game for the club in the C Grade clash against Narre Warren last Saturday. And there to support her were her husband Aaron and three-year-old daughter Isabel. The Cranbourne Netball Club, well it really has shaped her life. “I started playing netball at primary school, there was no Netta back then, it was pretty much chuck you in a team and away you went,” Jodie said ahead of her milestone match. “There weren’t that many teams back then, I remember playing in the under-13s when I was nine. I played open age with Melbourne Waverley and Eastside, but didn’t like the travel, so moved to Cranbourne just to have a bit of fun on the weekends. “I met my husband at the club and have made so many friends along the way. I just love the environment here and the social side of things is fantastic…it’s the friendships that keep dragging me back year after year.” So how does it feel to join Jodie Holt as the only 250-game players at the club? “It feels good, but you don’t really think about things like this until they happen,” she said.

Jodie Pike with husband Aaron and daughter Isabel. “When Jodie (Holt) did it I thought it was pretty cool, but it feels different now. I don’t know, it feels funny because I started as one of the young ones but now I’m one of the oldest - I don’t know if that’s a good or a bad thing. “All the players that I looked up to back then, it feels sort of strange that the young girls might look at me the same way today. You don’t expect that to happen, it just happens even if you don’t think you deserve it.”

“I played in one grand final, which we lost by 10 goals, but I think we have so much potential in this team and hopefully this is the year we can go all the way. “I want to keep playing for as long as a I can, as long as I’m enjoying it and as long as the girls are around I’ll continue to love the sport.” Jodie, who thrives as a midcourter, wanted to thank a few people for her long and rewarding journey. “I’d like to thank my husband Aaron, he has been so supportive and looks after Isabel, so I can continue to play, and just all the coaches I have had along the way,” she said. “And to all the girls at the club – they’re my best mates.”

Jodie shows her determination against Narre Warren Jodie has won played in the A, B and C Grade teams over her journey, winning best and fairests along the way, but still craves that elusive premiership. And if she could achieve it this year it would be even more special with her sister Emma coaching the side. “We played together for a few years, the year I fell pregnant we made finals and I didn’t tell anyone apart from her and my coach because I wanted to win a premiership,” Jodie said.

Jodie Pike had the attention of her teammates prior to her 250th match.

Milestones and medals Milestones were made and medals were won in the opening round of the South East Football Netball League last weekend. Cranbourne’s Bec Sparkes, back row third from left, forgot about her 150th game against Doveton on Good Friday so instead celebrated her 151st game against Narre Warren last week. Club-mate Tegan Stahl had the balloons out for her 50th game with the club. And Beaconsfield’s Kaela Hughes and Berwick’s Kassidy Withers had medals to show off after being named beston-court for their respective teams in the Battle of the Creek at Edwin Flack Reserve.

Netball Preview The Kangaroos bounce out of the blocks The ROC Netball Club welcomes reigning premier Tooradin-Dalmore to Starling Road today with the A Grade clash between the Kangaroos and Seagulls set to be a beauty. On last year’s form the Seagulls would be certainties in this one – they took all before them in 2017 – but things may be a little different this time around. The Seagulls defeated last year’s wooden spooners Pakenham under lights at Toomuc Reserve last Saturday, winning 53-44, while the Kangaroos started their season with a 53-38 victory over Doveton. And remember – the Doves defeated last year’s preliminary finalist Cranbourne in the season opener on Good Friday. The Kangaroos did the damage in the first and last quarters last week, starting with an electrifying 16-9 first term, lost the middle stages by two goals, before ramming home their five-goal advantage at the final break with a dominant 17-7 final stanza. The Kangas received great drive from Zoe Callanan (C), Olivia Hamilton (WA) and a myriad of players at wing defence, while Mel Overdyk, Laura Quinn, Alisha Young and Jamilah Ferns showed plenty of determination at the defensive end of the court. And Sara Villiers (GS) was sublime under the ring, scoring 40 of her sides 53 goals including 14 of 17 in the final term. Sarah Castricum and Sam Neil took turn at feeding Villiers throughout the course of the afternoon. But can they repeat that standard of play against the Seagulls? Kelly Andrews will be happy with the first-up win against the Lions, her side scoring 14 goals in each of the first three quarters on its way to a 15-goal lead at threequarter time. The Lions cut the margin back with a 17-11 final term, but the Seagulls had already shown their allround strength around the court. Andrews has so much versatility at her disposal it’s not funny. All eight players from last week had a bib change at one stage or another with Bec Kinna (GD/GK/GS) taking things to the extreme – she almost needed her own change room! Ebony Dolan (GK) and Sara Duncan (WD) controlled things defensively, with Emma Iacovou (C), Tara Smith (WA) and Alex Maher (GA/WA) all spending quality time through the midcourt. Alex Duff (GS) and Jess Cox (GS/C) rounded out an impressive first-up hit out from the champions. The Seagulls should win and win well. Cranbourne needs to bounce back with a win and gets

Zoe Mason has started the season on fire for Beaconsfield

the chance to do so against Beaconsfield at Holm Park Reserve. Cranny has lost its first two to Doveton and Narre Warren – a tough start to the season. There was nothing in the game against the Magpies until the Eagles gave up an 8-13 third quarter on their way to a 38-42 defeat. Familiar faces like Nat Sparks, Steph Ryan, Tara Cecil and Alanah Hardy will be keen to bounce back against Beacy – but it won’t be easy. Kelly Whitecross had Beaconsfield looking sharp as a tack against Berwick last week, the 58-29 victory taking it straight to the top of the ladder. Rylee Nelson (C) played the link-role beautifully while Kaela Hughes (GK/GD) gave a best-on-court display in defence. This one will go down to the wire – its Beaconsfield by two goals. Narre Warren makes the trip to Berwick comfortable in the knowledge that it will be super-competitive again in 2018.

Netball Preview The Magpies lost a lot of class over the off-season but players like Britnee Tyers (GK), Carly Stagg (WA) and Caitlin Egan (GD) played well against Cranbourne and should be regular contributors. And Erin Clark (WD) provides the ultimate form of leadership. Berwick played a ripper second quarter against Beaconsfield last week and now need to build that into a four-quarter performance. Kassidy Withers (GS/GA) was outstanding for the Wickers last week, taking on the might of Kaela Hughes, while Hayley Alman (GD) and Morgan Thomas (GK) also held firm under pressure. The Wickers will get better as the season rolls on – but the Magpies will win this one. And Doveton hosts Pakenham in a game that should propel the Doves into the top four. Mel Webster (GD) and Akanisi Seeto (GK) are developing into a strong and reliable defensive combination while Danielle Devlin (GS) is showing some fine form as a goaler. Pakenham put up a brave fight against Tooradin last week and will go in confident it can challenge the Doves. Look for goalers Kyra Esler and Lauren Spinks to get some quality passing from the likes of Katrina Meredith and co. But the Doves will get the choccies.

Rylee Nelson will be a key player for Beaconsfield against Cranbourne

Thanks to Cranbourne for turning on the beautiful weather for Round 1. 13 White: NW 19 def Cran 14 With some new faces this year, the girls were ready to start after a really solid preseason. Jenna, Avani and Paige were excellent in defence, creating a lot of turnovers. Our dynamic mid court Ava, Sienna, Zoey and Tahni provided plenty of drive. Micaela, Elly and Avani were consistent in the goal ring. BOC: Jenna, Elly and Ava. Fantastic start to the season! 13 Red: Cran 26 def NW 21 The girls played a great first half, scores being very even with Delainey shooting accurately. The Cranbourne team stepping it up winning the 3rd and 4th quarters. We had some good play down the court but not enough to win the game. We can keep building from here. Exciting season ahead. 15 White: Cran 31 def NW 22 Great start to the season unfortunately we didn’t come away with the win but great efforts by all. BOC: Mackenzie and Olivia 15 Red: Cran 40 def NW 21 We came up against a much taller, well drilled Cranbourne side, and couldn’t come back from our slow start in the first half. Our 3rd quarter was certainly our best, the girls were confident, gelled well and definitely took it to Cranbourne. BOC: Holly and Lainey 17 Red: Cran 34 def NW 32 We took the court in a fast, explosive game, going goal for goal for most of the game! A fantastic team game was played for our season opener! Awards: Kacey, Taylah and Amy. Special mention to Abbey on her first game for the club. It would be great to have an award for everyone as they all deserved one! 17 White: Cran 30 def NW 29 The team hit the court hard and were led strongly by Rylee in defence. Cranbourne edged ahead to five goals up at three quarter time. Plenty of changes were made for the last quarter. The girls rallied from a six goal deficit to lose by a goal. A very strong team performance by all. Special mention: Kayla, Chloe and Ruby M. D grade: NW 35 def Cran Great start to the season for D grade with a good win over Cranbourne. BOC: Georgia, Britt and Mikayla, however the win was due to a great team effort by all. A fantastic group of girls and we are looking forward to a fun season together. C Grade: NW 39 def Cran 36 We were very keen for the season to start with lots of new faces to the C grade team as well as a new coach, Sharlene. With the warm weather the girls took a while to settle and get used to each other. The end result was a 3 goal win. Great game girls. Awards: Zoe, Taylah S and Haley R B Grade: NW 62 def Cran 29

With a new look team this year, these girls worked hard over pre-season to become a very united group! The girls took their training onto the court in the first quarter and played a solid four quarters of netball! We saw the team come together and play outstanding netball! Awards could have gone to the whole team. Awards: Chelsea, Amy, Tamika and Jaymie. Special mention to our co captain Kate as well as Tayla and Rachael. A Grade: NW 42 def Cran 38 A great start for A grade! We exerted strong defensive pressure from the first centre pass and maintained this throughout the game. Patience in attack saw us make the most of any opportunities we were given. A strong team effort from all players today. Special mention to our new players – Brit and Caitlin. BOC: Brit, Britt and Erin. Thanks to sponsors: #Narre Love, Shinners Plumbing, Mollys Bricklaying, De Hann, Simpson and Lang families

Cranboune Last week was a nice shiny day at Casey Fields which is a rare occurrence when we play Narre Warren at home. With the sun out it was a great start to the day and our juniors kicked it off by putting in their hardest across all 6 teams. Five out of these six teams were able to come away with a nice win for the morning, some of these with a very close margin. Unfortunately our Under 13’s White tried their best but were unable to come away with the win for the day. As the day went along our senior girls had lots of milestones to celebrate throughout the day. Unfortunately for our senior team we were unable to come away with any of the wins with Narre taking away the 4 points in all 4 grades. For our C and D grade girls these games were close throughout the whole game but Narre were able to come away in the end on both courts. Our B grade girls were able to have some great plays throughout the day but unfortunately were unable to put it all together for the whole game. In the A grade game this was always going to be a close one with both teams having a very young side. Our girls were able to put in some great quarters but unfortunately dropped to 10 goals behind at one stage. A credit to our girls was that they did not give up here, they fought back hard and with the move of Alanah Hardy into goals allowed the team to work hard to catch up. The girls were able to pull it back to 4 goals behind but unfortunately ran out of time in their fight back. This week we head down to Beaconsfield for the day. Wishing all of our teams the best of luck for the day. Go Eagles!

Awards:Chelsea & Alicia 15R-There was plenty to taken from the game that was positive, including our strong defence with Tiahn & Maddi constantly applying pressure & intercepting. The ball moved quickly & smoothly down the court & the goalers combined well in the ring.It took a while to settle into the 1st qtr seeing Beacy at a 4goal deficit, but things started to straighten out with only 1goal separating both teams at 1/2 time.It was a even game leading into the final qtr, where Berwick were the team who made the most of their opportunities. 15W-Seeing some great things to work on in the

Tooradin-Dalmore After an awesome pre-season, it was great see our teams hit the court for Round 1 and kick off our 2018 season with a bang! Congratulations to all those who played their first game in the green and red, we’re thrilled to have you part of our club. Tooradin headed to Pakenham for our first round and came away with some great results to start the season on the right path, with all senior teams winning on the day. While we didn’t get any wins in our junior games, our young Gulls all put in a fantastic effort and there were some very promising signs across all teams. With many new faces and new combinations in the juniors, we look forward to seeing the teams improve, grow and thrive throughout the year. D Grade got their season off to a great start with the biggest win of the day and it was great to see Melissa Miszkowiec make her return to the court after doing her knee a couple of seasons ago. In a rare moment for the club, we also had mother and daughter duo Sarah Holloway and Mairead Holloway given the opportunity to step out on the court together for the D Grade game which was lovely to see. C Grade also got a good win with four new players in that team coming up from under 17s last year, so it was

www.aflsoutheast.com.au

Netball Notes wonderful to see some of our young guns join the senior ranks. B Grade, who were a little depleted with a few players out due to injuries and being away, battled it out in a tight game with Pakenham and managed to come away with the win in a close finish. There was some great netball on display as the A Grade teams took to the court, with our girls securing their first win as they look to continue their success from last year. Thanks to Pakenham for welcoming us in what was a great Round 1 and we wish you all the best for the rest of the season. Thanks to everyone - committee, helpers, players, parents and sponsors - who helped get us to the first round as there’s always lots to be done behind the scenes in the lead up to the season. Our first social event for the year will be on our bye on Saturday 28 April, where we’ll being heading to the Mornington Peninsula for a winery and brewery tour. We’d love to see as many of you there as possible, so jump on the Facebook event and buy your tickets now! Other social events to put in your calendar are 26 May which will be a function at the Tooradin Sports Club, and the 7 July for our Annual Formal Night. This week sees us to head to ROC in what we’re sure will be another great day of netball. GO SEAGULLS!!

Berwick Round 1 Battle of the Creek! U13 Red We started the game on fire leading by 11 goals in the first quarter. We slipped away in the 2nd quarter allowing them back into the game. We came out in the final quarter and fought hard to take the win. Score 24-19 BOC Landia Schwalger U13 Whites We started the game really strong with some fantastic defence. It was great to see this group of player’s ball movement and strong leads to the ball. The final quarter was so exciting to take the win by 2. Score 21-19 BOC – Tess Corless U15 Red We had a great start to the game, however beaconsfield quickly came back making it a very tight battle. All players lifted and dug deep and made every ball count, the girls stepped up in the last quarter to come away with the win. Score 20-18 BOC – Brooklyn Prescott U15 Whites With great defence from the start and smart attacking the girls started on fire and never looked back. The heat started to take its toll in the 3rd quarter but to the girls credit they pushed hard to take an easy win. Score 34-17 BOC- Eliza Angenent U17 Red

Doveton Today we welcome the Pakenham Football club and Netball club to our home ground for what we hope will be a great day of footy and netball. Last week saw a mixed bag of results for our netballers, unfortunately our A graders couldn’t come home with the four points, losing to a determined R.O.C side 53-38, this young side will be looking for redemption today. The B grade team had their second win, defeating R.O.C in a high scoring game 62-55 and will be looking for another win today. C grade had their first win by two goals, winning 29-27, D grade had a comfortable win,39-23, with a few regulars missing this was a great effort by this team. 17 red got their 4 points on the board with a win over R.O.C, 34-28, 17 White won by 6 goals, 41-35, with half of this team being made up of 15’s players this is a great effort. 15 Red are yet to show us their full potential, this is your week girls, good luck. 15 Whites are looking to get their first win of the season today and looked sharp at training. Our two 13’s teams have been working on their skills at training and a win for both these teams is not far away. Good luck to all the Doveton Football and netball teams playing today.

They started the game optimistically against a very experienced team finishing the break with 3 goals ahead. A strong tall shooter was an obstacle for the team levelling the score at half time. Both teams went goal for goal in the 3rd. Going into the final quarter I asked for more conversion from the centre passes they answered and finished the game with a 2 goal fantastic win. Score 27-25 BOC Hayley Alman U17 White Beaconsfield came out strong and showed us they meant business. To my girls credit they never let them get too far ahead. They came out every quarter with heads held high ready for the battle. The last quarter was a hard fought battle with a minute to go we took the lead. Score 23 -21 BOC Hayley Woolfe D GRADE We started well through the midcourt creating opportunities for our goalers however 4 injury timeouts cost us. To the girls credit they never stop trying all game. Lots of positive’s to take from this game. Score 12-51 BOC Chelsea Hoffman

Netball Notes C GRADE Our Start wasn’t exactly what we all had hoped for with some first game nerves and jitters getting the best of the girls. Beacy getting a big jump on us after the first quarter. Although the girls gained composure and got their heads back into the game we were unable to claw back the score line. Score 21-42 BOC Holly Harman B GRADE We are still trying to find our fitness we needed to have consistency in movement and confined efforts. Beacy were just too good on the day across the whole court. The team will refocus and through hard work will return better performance moving forward. Score 21-47 BOC Larri Alman A GRADE Our A Grade team were overwhelmed in the first 10 minutes by a very experienced beacy team. They were strong all over the court and it was very hard to find a weakness. We managed to get our hands on the ball but just couldn’t buy a goal to convert. We were chasing a 10 goal gap going into the 2nd quarter. The girls fought hard with the 2nd quarter being level. The 3rd quarter we brought on fresh legs but beacy stepped it up a notch and forced our girls to be chasing a 25 goal deficit. The team kept running but Beacy were just too good. Today it showed our weaknesses on court but it also showed signs of what we can do during the 2nd quarter. We have to put 4 quarter together on the day. Score 29-58 BOC Kassidy Withers Thank you to all our clubs Sponsors for 2018 greatly appreciated
