RECORD ROUND 3 21st-28th April 2018

AFL South East There’s little doubt that the connection between Australian Rules Football and Anzac Day has never been as strong as it is today. If we look back for a moment, football played a huge role during many conflicts for Australian soldiers, simply kicking a football a celebration of their national culture while overseas in places like Africa and Vietnam. But it took a while for the connection to gain traction on the home front. The first VFL matches played on Anzac Day occurred in 1960 after an Act of Parliament which lifted the previous restrictions on playing football on the day. There were individual success stories, like in 1975 when Carlton and Essendon attracted 78,000 fans to VFL Park, a then Anzac Day record, before Richmond and Collingwood drew 92,436 to the MCG in 1977. That clash triggered something in the mind of Kevin Sheedy, the coach of Essendon when the modern version of Anzac Day football began in 1995.Sheedy was gardening one day when he started to consider how football on Anzac Day could pay suitable tribute to those who had served their country. The rest, as they say, is history.

Coming up to the all-important ANZAC Round, it is pleasing to look back on the first few rounds across the region and see the evenness of the competitions across all three senior leagues. Last weekend, average winning margins were 18 points (SEFNL), 20 points (MPNFL Division 1) and 26 points (MPNFL Division 2). Worthy of note was Langwarrin’s draw with Red Hill and Tyabb’s near miss against Hastings. After 3 rounds in Division One only YCW remains undefeated while in SEFNL and Division Two, Officer, Narre Warren, Dromana, Karingal, Hastings and Chelsea are the only undefeated teams after two rounds. Good to see tight competition across the region. Edithvale-Aspendale would have been undefeated in MPNFL Division One had they not been sanctioned for a breach of the Player Points Policy for their round one match against Bonbeach. Having easily accounted for Bonbeach by 39 points, an investigation into Edi-Asp’s team sheet uncovered an incorrect declaration of the player points. The Club was found to have exceeded the 39-point cap for that game. The AFLSE Commission accepted that Edi-Asp’s breach was unintentional, nevertheless in accordance with the state-wide policy, the Commission applied a penalty, which included losing the four points for the win, handing those points to opponent Bonbeach, and also losing their 99 points scored. Individual honours such as goalkickers, medal voting and games played statistics are not affected by the penalty. Finally, I would like to note the full co-operation given by Edi-Asp during the investigation. The Club was open and honest about how the breach occurred.

Clubs are reminded that AFLSE will be diligently enforcing the Player Points and Player Payments Policies in 2018. The above example is a notice to Clubs to ensure that you do the research into transferred players and complete the official player declarations. Be aware that there are whistle blowers out there.

Winner of 5 Gold Medals & Best in Class Trophy

Good luck to all Clubs during the ANZAC round, in particular to Tooradin-Dalmore and Officer which are hosting games on ANZAC Day itself.

So much at stake for SEFNL By David Nagel The competitive juices are beginning to flow for SEFNL Interleague coach Rhys Nisbet after he and his coaching staff settled on a 55-man squad to take on AFL Yarra Ranges on May 19. The AFL Victoria Community Championships clash at Holm Park Reserve will see the two leagues collide as talks continue behind the scenes to bring them together as one for divisional football in 2019. The Berwick premiership coach of 2015 is fully aware of the bragging rights at stake when he makes his interleague coaching debut. “It’s definitely something I’ve thought about and something I’ll be using in the lead up to the game,” Nisbet said. “A lot of hard work has gone into creating a special feeling at interleague in the past and it’s definitely something we want to keep building on. ”The pressure is on because bragging rights have probably never been bigger for whoever wins this time around.” Nisbet and his coaching staff, comprising of Todd Devine, Robbie Taylor, Darren Dwyer, Stuart Batten and Damien Whitnell, have been scouting in recent times and are impressed with the quality at their disposal. Nisbet said he can’t wait to try and mould that talent into a committed and cohesive unit. “It’s been an interesting exercise to be watching players that you’ve tried to stop in the past and think that they’ll be on our side this time around,” he said. “There are some great players in this competition, some blokes that have played at a high level for a very long time and it’s really exciting to have their names on the list. “Hopefully we can get a full commitment from the players and give Yarra Ranges a mighty shake on May 19.” The squad is very well balanced across the board, with interleague stalwarts like Michael Collins, Marc Holt, Brandon Osborne and Luke Bee-Hugo are set to stand with some fresh new faces by their side. Beaconsfield’s Lachie Modica, Berwick’s Will Arthurson, Cranbourne’s Kirk Dickson, Doveton’s Mitch Cotter, Narre Warren’s Tom Miller and Officer’s Jesse Longmuir are just some of the exciting new talent on the list. The forward line, which includes Holt and Tooradin’s Andrew Dean, is particularly exciting according to the coach.

“The forward line is pretty exciting, with a really good mix of proven performers and young blokes trying to make their mark, and that’s an area of the ground that is obviously pretty important to winning games of footy,” Nisbet said, before explaining he wanted his players to stick to their natural strengths. “It’s intense footy, so we’ve picked some players that are pretty aggressive at the contest but also some players who love to take the game on,“ he said. “There’s a lot of flare and natural talent in the league and it’s important we showcase that on the day. “We’ve selected quite a few young players in the squad, they all won’t play, but they’re the sort of players we hope will provide an x-factor and inject a real level of excitement.” The SEFNL interleague squad will train on two consecutive Wednesday’s (May 2 and 9) before rounding out preparations with training sessions on Tuesday 15 and Thursday May 17.

Footy Preview Anzac spirit alive and well in SEFNL By David Nagel Beaconsfield and Narre Warren will kick-start a bumper Anzac Round of football with a highly-anticipated clash at Holm Park Reserve. All clubs in the South East Football Netball League have done a wonderful job of embracing the Anzac spirit over the years – and this time around will be no exception. We pay a more detailed tribute to Anzac Day in the middle pages this week but, for now, let’s get stuck in to the footy! It’s fair to say that Narre Warren has been a surprise packet so far this season. The Magpies have passed the toughest of tests with flying colours, accounting for perennial powerhouses Cranbourne and Berwick in a start that even the greatest of optimists would struggle to see coming. They may have dodged a bullet against the wildyinaccurate Eagles in round one, but last week’s win over Berwick certainly put a stake in the ground – the Magpies are here to contend! Okay the conditions did suit, with players like Michael Collins, Col McNamara, Dylan Quirk and Hayden Stagg perfectly suited to the greasy conditions, but it was the dedication to the cause that really did stand out. Discipline and application were key factors in the conditions last week – and the Magpies taught the Wickers a lesson. Can they teach Beaconsfield one as well? Leigh McQuillen will be breathing a huge sigh of relief after Beacy kicked 2.2 to 1.2 in the final term to get over the top of Cranbourne last week. Key forward Nathan Langley was once again held goalless, leaving the scoring duties to smaller types like Riley Verbi, Ben McGowan, Kyle O’Sullivan and Daniel Johnson. Running types like Trent Stokoe and Jake Bowd were also important in the victory while Matt Homfray played his best game in Eagles’ colours to date. This one has the potential to be a cracker with Beaconsfield’s leg-speed sure to trouble the Magpies at times. But their overall strength around the ground, and their willingness to work hard for each other over the first two weeks of footy points to a 13-point Magpies victory. Then we hit Anzac Day, Wednesday 25 April, when Tooradin host Cranbourne and Officer welcome nearest neighbour Pakenham to Starling Road. Tooradin took a backward step against Officer last week, but skipper Matt Livermore is hoping the build up to Anzac Day will lift his team to new heights. “It’s very exciting for the club, we pencil it in each year and know we are going to come up against one of the toughest opponents going around,” Livermore said. “It feels like we’re getting closer and closer to them with a young list that is building every year. Cam Brown, Dylan

8

Age shall not weary them. Narre Warren champion Michael Collins has started the season in fine style. Sutton and Dylan Wilson are some new faces coming through from the juniors and that’s exciting for the rest of the playing group. “They’re all exciting and quick and take the game on and change the dynamics of the team, I think we’re heading in the right direction.” The Seagulls will run into a desperate Cranbourne outfit, keen to turn things around after two consecutive losses. Skipper Brandon Osborne believes his team will be up for the fight, particularly on Anzac Day. “You want to be up for every game of football you play in but it’s definitely more special,” Osborne said, before acknowledging the significance of the day. “You want to give it everything and make sure you look after your teammates just that little bit extra on that day. For me it’s right up there with grand final day as the biggest game of the year.” Osborne has once again been sensational for his side in defence, while Shaun Marusic has carried the extra burden through the midfield like it’s no burden at all. Osborne’s battle with Andrew Dean will be key, as will the contest between Marusic and Tooradin-gun Nick Lang through the midfield. The Seagulls are a chance in this one, but everything revolves around whether they bring their best or worst footy to the table. We’re only two rounds in and already discovering the roller-coaster ride they can take us on. The Eagles have more consistency and will get the job done comfortably. Two last-start winners collide at Starling Road on Anzac Day where top-of-the-table Officer will look to make it three in a row against Pakenham. So is it too early to use the “F” word – with the Kangas yet to play in a final series since the current structure began all the way back in 2005. Skipper Matty Clarke said the prospect of playing finals was as close as it had ever been.

www.aflsoutheast.com.au

Footy Preview “This is my eighth year now and I’ve never played finals, but we shouldn’t just put a cap on thinking about fifth spot,“ he said. “There’s no reason why we can’t keep moving the ball quickly and play how we want to play against the better teams in the competition.” Clarke said the Kangaroos game plan felt more settled now under second-year coach Doug Koop. “This is Koopy’s second year and it feels like the message is starting to sink in now, “ he said. “Everyone is on board and we’re understanding what he is trying to get across. Everyone is buying into that, we would have lapses in concentration last year but we’re doing it far more consistently this year.” And the last word on Anzac Day goes to Pakenham skipper Chris Cardona, who said the occasion has always fired him up. “Bloody oath it does, it really puts a fire in the belly and it hits home about the sacrifices people have made and you just want to give more for the occasion,” he said. “It’s always been a good rivalry between the two clubs anyway but now with the connection with Anzac Day it’s certainly a win that we would hold with more significance.” Sorry Chris, it’s not your turn this time around – it’s the Kangas by 25 points. And Berwick will be too strong for Doveton when the two sides collide at Edwin Flack Reserve on Saturday 28 April. Berwick on the rebound is not ideal for the Doves who look set for a bottom-two finish this season. The Wickers have much higher ambitions and will bank their second win for the season by 10-goals plus.

Footy Notes Narre Warren

Narre re-gained the Pat Sweeney Shield with wins over Berwick in the Seniors and Reserves last week, while our Under 19s’ poor kicking contributed to a loss in the early game. It’s only Round 2 of course, but what a copybook start to the season, Narre taking the two biggest scalps OPT. Cranbourne then Berwick - at their grounds in both 1 coaching Seniors and Reserves! A big shout out to our panel and recruiters for assembling and preparing a pretty awesome playing group. Get your memberships now. 2018 is going to be an exciting ride. Seniors: This was a win for the ages. All 22 magpie jumpers committed to each other with relentless attack at the football and at the ball-carrier. Old hand, Col McNamara was best-on - outstanding at full-back. With Matt Soz and Ryan Quirk in support we’ve got arguably the best intercept and rebound defensive unit in the OPT. comp. Narre didn’t have any passengers, but special 2 Cody mentions to our small brigade – Staggy, Trent and our inspirational skipper Dylan Quirk. Josh Tonna and Collo also got plenty of footy in the midfield; Jesse Davies impressed again; and in tough conditions that made goals hard to find, Mitch Cox and Stewie Scanlon snagged two gold nuggets each. Reserves: The Twos definitely copped the worst of the weather with a heavy hailstorm hitting mid- second quarter. It was tight as a drum early but our boys hung tough taking a six point lead into the long break, then OPT. kept Berwick goalless in the third term. Leadership is an 3 but we intangible ingredient in a team sport like ours, have it in spades with Mitch Cowan, Chris Collins, Justin Marriott and Matt Lee at the reins of our Twos. Brenton Wells handled the footy like a dry day; Jake Boccari and Cam Miller were also in our best. Under 19s: Narre’s 19s kicked with a blistering gale in the first term, but unfortunately could only return 1.6 for their efforts at quarter time. From there we only managed one more goal for the game as Berwick’s stronger bodies endured the conditions better for a 21 point defeat on our boys. Brayden Sharp was Narre’s best with Mathew Butera, Riley Smith and Jack Flannery. Fox Road redevelopment: Some great progress with our building works over recent weeks. Getting near to lockup stage and then the internal finishing can begin. New training lights are up so our training has returned to Fox Road for the first time since daylight saving finished. Some confidence that we can host our Round 4 home game against Officer on 5 May at home. Heaps of hard work by Committee and members happening behind the scenes. Thanks to all involved. Social Notes – Our first major social function for the year is our annual NWFNC Berwick Mazda Corporate Lunch in our new social club at Fox Road. Pakenham Pakenham Reserves ran out onto Robinson reserve in wet windy conditions and battled the game out well against hail and heavy rain but were unable to match Doveton who came out 24 points ahead at the final siren. Better conditions for the senior’s game resulted in a very even contest with Pakenham notching up their first win of the season by 6 points. Our Thursday night dinners after training have been very well attended so far with the netball club and football club sharing the responsibility for the tasty meals provided. It was terrific to see a full clubroom this week with the football club, netball club and the women’s team all combining to fill the tables. It would be terrific to see this continue throughout the season. The Pakenham Football Netball club Facebook page continues to grow and seems to produce a new media sensation each week. It is also a great spot to check out the latest news from the club, see our generous sponsors and find out which days to clear on your calendar for one of our fun club social functions. Our first one for the season will be the PFC’s Double Denim Night next Saturday, 21st April. Doors open at 7pm and entry is only $10. Be there AND be square, there are prizes for best dressed with the jukebox in full swing. Our next game will be against Officer at home on ANZAC Day. Hopefully we can bring home the win on this significant day. Go Pakky!

Footy Notes Cranbourne If there is one thing about playing footy in the extreme elements it can be the toll it takes on your body at the end of the game and for the days following; the aches, the pains and after a loss particularly, the disappointment of a tough slog in tough conditions when you just weren’t up to it or perhaps committed enough to the task. This week coming is a reminder of how a game of tough footy pales into insignificance a little; how no matter how hard you battled out on the footy field, how much you ache and moan about what did and what didn’t happen, that at the end of it all it was really just a game of footy; a game of footy no doubt you are entitled to fight as if your life depended on it, about the right to feel you’ve been let down or let your mate down but in all you know you have the chance to make amends the following week; and the week after; and the week after and so on. Our game against Tooradin today means all of that and more. A game that our clubs have worked hard together on in order to remember the deeds of the past; our forefathers that fought for our opportunity and right, the right to play footy and then either bask in the glory of victory or wallow in self-pity; albeit either way over a beer. Two out of three results didn’t go our way last week, not because we didn’t want it, but as happens at times, just because we weren’t good enough. The 19s kicked off the day in somewhat inclement conditions and were in the game right up until the last quarter when Beacy snuck away from us. There were signs of improvement since round one and we hope and know that this improvement will continue beyond the first three quarters of last week. A solid effort but further commitment is required by us. Best in a 22-point loss were Murph, Corey, Jordan Morris, Luca, Nunny and Coops. The twos got off to a great start to the game when it could’ve been forgiven if everyone had thought the game had been shifted without notice to the Antarctic! Hail, rain and fierce winds meant that half way through the second quarter, everyone left the field to go and sit in the changerooms and shiver uncontrollably until the umps decided they only prefer ice in their Bacardi and Coke and not so much hammering down on their heads!! We haven’t seen weather like that for a while and when we did resume from the break, we put the foot on the pedal to come out comfortable 47-point winners. Best were Lewi, Nick Russo, Chace, Bailey, Birdy and Koey. The seniors had probably spent most of the afternoon hoping either the weather would change or that the game would be just abandoned. The weather did improve and they got away a bit late and the margin was never outside a goal either way for the first half. At ¾ time the margin was just two points in a low-scoring game and unfortunately for us, Beacy held on for a win that condemned us to two consecutive losses in a season for the first time since 2016…..and we all know how that ended up.

14

Best in our 8-point loss were Yoz, Clay, Waters, Zak, Dill and Micky B. This week at Tooradin we get the chance to redeem ourselves and what a week to show we are made of stern stuff, that through hard work and commitment, the opportunities given to us by past deeds of brave men and women mean we can go back out, play the game we love and hopefully come away with a win and duly celebrate with that beer. Win, lose or draw, today won’t be about us; not entirely anyway but we can all be thankful for who we are and what our forefathers stood for.

Beaconsfield We welcome you all back to Holm park today for what looks likely to be a ripper of a game and fantastic weather conditions. The under 19s are in good form after a tough game last week against Cranbourne. However the day started off in great tradition with the team surrounding the flag pole for the unfurling of the premiership flag from 2017 supported by Charles Doro hoisting the flag. Our reserves had the toughest of conditions having play stopped due to very poor weather conditions with heavy rain and hail belting down on the guys The seniors had a tough game against Cranbourne in equally tough conditions however came home with a gutsy win the first of the season Today is our annual ANZAC day tribute match and we welcome you all here and today we are honored to have the Upper Beaconsfield RSL read the OED supported by Rob Crozier playing the Bagpipes. We also welcome and thank the Beaconsfield Primary school for their support in singing the National anthem “Today we welcome all our Past Players & Officials coming along today for the annual luncheon. A big thank you to our special guest MC’s Trevor Perrin & Eris Cashman for making it a memorable day. We hope to see you all at Holm Park often during the year to support our 2018 teams. “ In what looks set to be a great day for everyone in local footy today we wish everyone all the best and we thank those who represent and have served our country proud keeping us all safe. Thank you to our true hero’s may you all stay safe and always be remembered Go Beacy

Footy Notes Tooradin-Dalmore After last week’s game against Officer it might be a good idea for our boys to do some homework and have a read of the rules of football. The rules clearly state that you get maximum value for your effort by kicking the ball through the big sticks – 6 points. We blew our chances against Officer, kicking 2.13 which was very frustrating to watch on the day. The conditions were horrendous, but no excuse for that score line. Matty Livermore led form the front and Connor O’Riordan, Brad Lenders and Dylan Wilson also fought the game out well. Today is the biggest day on our home-and-away football calendar – Anzac Day versus Cranbourne, it doesn’t get any bigger than that. As has become tradition the club will be heavily involved in celebrating the Anzac spirit. We want as many club representatives as possible to assemble on the ground prior to the senior game today and take in what Anzac Day is truly all about – remembering those who made the ultimate sacrifice for our country. We have a guard of honour, a bugler, and the Tooradin Primary School Choir all ready to play a part in a ceremony hosted by Mr Colin Butler. We then have a flyover from a war plane, a minute’s silence and a flag raising ceremony to finish off the service. Then Councillor Geoff Ablett will toss the coin and big game between the Seagulls and Eagles will begin – can’t wait! Lest We Forget

Officer Today we host Pakenham, one of our oldest rivals in what is one of the biggest and most anticipated rounds of the year, however today is about far more than just football. Today we meet not to celebrate and glorify war, but rather to remember those who have served our country during conflict and crisis, many of whom made the ultimate sacrifice for our country to uphold and protect our way of life so that we can be here today. Today, on ANZAC Day we also stop to remember not only the service men and women who served abroad but also those who served on the home front supplying strength to our fighting forces. Today is a day to stop and reflect on the qualities of past generations of Australians who in times of extreme hardship displayed courage, discipline, self-sacrifice, self-reliance,

resourcefulness and friendship. The Officer Senior Football Club would also like to take this opportunity to thank all those past and present who have served our country. We would also like to welcome all those from the RSL who are with us here today. The 2018 season to date has certainly been an interesting one with all sides currently remaining undefeated leaving the club in a position it has not become accustomed to in recently years. Last week we managed to grind out a hard fought win against Tooradin with a number of new and existing players standing tall in less than ideal weather conditions. In other news, the Officer Junior Football club recently played their first game of the year and it was great to see a number of terrific results, but no more so than the U/17’s who had a great result on Sunday 15 May. The Senior Club had the opportunity to meet many of these players as they joined us for training and dinner on the eve of their first game. We look forward to seeing the U/17’s as well all other Officer Junior Football Clubs teams at various points this season and we wish all the lads the best for there upcoming games. The Club has a busy schedule coming up with a number of important social events on the horizon including the Australian Cocktail Night to be held in the Social Rooms on 5 May with the best dressed Australian themed costume winning a prize. The Club would also like to take this opportunity to thank the many volunteers who keep our club running. There is much more to a football club than what you see on match day and the extra help shown by players and supporters in recent weeks has been greatly appreciated. It is with great sadness and joy that this week we say goodbye to Maryann Quinn who has been running our canteen for many years. Maryann has been a great servant of our club for many years and like all volunteers does not do it for the recognition, however she is most deserving of it. Maryann, we wish you all the best in your future endeavors and we have no doubt that we will see you back in some capacity either as a volunteer or supporter in the near future. e) rocfc@icloud.com f) https://www.facebook.com/OfficerSeniorFC/ w) http://officerseniorfc.com.au/ In) https://www.instagram.com/roc_osfc/ Go Roos!!! #RespectAllFearNone

Footy Notes Doveton

Berwick

A disappointing last start against Pakenham where we were right in the game until the dying stages before going down by a kick. The boys endeavour can not be questioned and surely a reward for that effort is just around the corner. We just need that one win to get our season rolling. Big Rus snuck forward for a couple of goals while Matty Stapleton, Sam Muirhead and Mitch Cotter all found plenty of the footy. Well done to Mitch, Matt and Russ on their interleague squad selection, joining Jake Dermott and Riley D’Arcy on the list. Today we head to Berwick for the Anzac Round clash and there should be no excuses for not being fired up today. Berwick at Berwick is a great challenge, but hopefully we can call on that Anzac spirit to produce our best performance of the season. Go Doves!

After the massive high of unfurling our flag and having a good win over Beaconsfield last week we were brought back down to earth by a fired-up Narre Warren. The under 19s kick started the day in style, but that would prove to be our last taste of success with the reserves and seniors both going down to the Magpies. The senior game was a real arm-wrestle early with neither team kicking a goal in the first quarter before we slipped behind in the second quarter and could never quite get our bearings back. Will Arthurson, Jo West, Lucas Jellyman-Turner and Kristian Meredith all did well against some great pressure from Narre Warren – who take control of the Pat Sweeney Shield. Today we try and bounce back when we welcome Doveton to Edwin Flack Reserve. The Doves haven’t scored a win yet this season so let’s make sure we’re not their first scalp. We also pay homage to Anzac Day and pay our respects to our service men and women who fought for the freedoms we have today. The sacrifices we put on the footy field pale in comparison – but let’s give it our best shot anyway. Lest We Forget

The Anzac spirit will never die By David Nagel

Listening to the stories of just a handful of leaders from local football clubs it becomes apparent quite quickly that the spirt of Anzac Day will never die. The firm handshakes, the look in the eyes, the emotion as they voice their words, that spirit of our service men and women – both past and present – lives strong in the young men and women of today. Anzac Day means everything to Jack Kowarzik from Pakenham. His great grandfather was a Captain in Tobruk, his grandfather Alec Kowarzik a stoker in the Korean War and a man who instilled in his grandson the importance of not taking anything for granted. “My earliest memories of Anzac Day are going to dawn service at the Dandenong RSL with my grandpa, my brother and my dad,” Jack said. “My grandpa was president of the RSL at the time and told us that if people can sacrifice their lives for our way of life, we can sacrifice a couple of hours to reminisce and listen to their stories. ”I really do encourage people to attend their local dawn service and reflect for a short time on the sacrifices that were made for our country – and be grateful for it.” Such is Kowarzik’s passion for Anzac Day he initially thought it wrong that football should be played on the day…but his thoughts have swung around.

“I thought it wasn’t appropriate, but love that it makes everyone think about it and brings it to the fore,“ he said. “It’s become such a positive thing and a privilege to play on the day, not for the footy but to pay homage to the day itself. In that minute’s silence, I don’t think about footy at all, I think about my grandpa and the people who didn’t make it back.” Kowarzik’s last words are chilling in the current environment. “Imagine if a war broke out tomorrow and all the players in my team had to go. Just think how many of them wouldn’t come back and how horrible that would be.” For Officer’s Sean Roach, the day also has special meaning. His great grandfather Leo Monaghan was a talented footballer who was named best on ground in Fitzroy’s preliminary final win in 1944. He was on the cusp of his greatest moment in football when his orders came through during the week and he was off to New Guinea and never got to play in the grand final. “He played 52 games in 14 years because of the war and the injuries he sustained, “ Roach explained. “He was very proud of the service he made but it took a severe toll on he and his family, and his football career as well. He was injured by a booby trap and had shrapnel wounds all down the left side of his body and had gangrenous knees.....

Paying their respects, from left; Ben O’Loughlin, Chris Cardona, Sean Roach, Jack Kowarzik and Matthew Clarke feel privileged to be playing on Anzac Day.

The Anzac spirit will never die “He had parts of his knees cut off and tied bricks to his legs to teach himself how to walk again. We don’t understand how hard that would be, and because of the service they gave hopefully we never will.” Roach said hearing the bugle play on Anzac Day was the time when he really did stop and reflect. ”I’ve been lucky enough to play at two clubs now that play on Anzac Day and the only I can describe it – it’s a very unique feeling and makes the hair on the back of your neck stand up,” he said. “You can’t fathom what those people went through. But what they would have wanted would be for us to remember and that’s the most important part of the day. “I love Anzac Day and it’s a privilege to be involved.” Former Officer president Barry O’Loughlin was just 17 years old in 1981 when his mum dropped him off in the city and he jumped on a bus to go to the Army Recruit Training Centre in Kapooka, near Wagga. He didn’t see his mum for the next eight months as he trained for 15 years of service that would see him overseas on two occasions and serve in nearly every state in Australia. He is still mates with some of the young men that he jumped on that bus with 37 years ago.

Anzac Day has extra-special meaning for Barry and Ben O’Loughlin.

The Anzac spirit will never die “There’s a bond there that will never be broken, a camaraderie, a brotherhood, because you work with these guys and rely on each other – your life is in each other’s hands,“ O’Loughlin explained. “You can never compare football to war, but that reliance on each other and building a strong bond is probably the biggest similarity I think.” O’Loughlin said his thoughts were mixed on Anzac Day. “I’m rapt the way Anzac Day is now, it lost its way there for a while, but my thoughts are about the soldier and his family because they did it very tough as well,” he said. And the final word goes to Cranbourne captain Brandon Osborne, who acknowledges that playing football on Anzac Day had given him a greater understanding of what the day truly means. “Last year we had a member of the SAS (Special Air Service) talk to the club and it was a real eye-opener to hear what he had been through,” Osborne said. “”Footy is nothing in comparison. We take our lives for granted, we definitely do, but it’s great to reflect on Anzac Day and truly cherish what we’ve got.”

Brandon Osborne and Matt Livermore will continue a proud tradition when Cranbourne and Tooradin meet on Anzac Day.

SEJ Little Demons Day Bitterly cold conditions couldn’t dampen the spirits of hundreds of youngsters at Casey Fields last Sunday as the South East Juniors kicked off season 2018 with Little Demons Day. The annual event sees under 8s, 9s and 10s players take in a carnival-type atmosphere with many games played at the same time and place at Casey Fields. Cranbourne coach Damien Whitnell had the umbrella up, and the heaters were out in force - it must be footy season again!

Netball Preview Feathers set to fly at Holm Park Reserve By David Nagel Beaconsfield and Narre Warren – two of the great netball clubs over the years – will put their unbeaten records on the line in today’s huge clash at Holm Park Reserve. And picking the winner is an almost impossible task. Beaconsfield has made a solid start under new coach Kelly Whitecross, doubling Berwick’s score in the seasonopening Battle of the Creek before running over the top of Cranbourne last week. The two sets of Eagles couldn’t be split at half and threequarter time, tied at 17 and 26 at those two intervals respectively, before Beacy ran away with a confidencebuilding 13 to 5 final term. The spark came through the midcourt, where Kaela Hughes, Zoe Mason, Tanya Mijovic and Rylee Nelson ran rampant, providing Bianca Sanzaro and Dani Fedel with a plethora of goal-scoring opportunities. Abbie Sheers made a great return to the court in defence, combining with the miserly Dani Cameron to make scoring difficult for Cranbourne goalers Tegan Stahl and Alanah Hardy. But Beaconsfield will need to step things up even further against the Magpies, who continue to apply their trademark pressure around the court despite losing some key players in the off-season. The Magpies opened with a hard-fought victory over Cranbourne in round one before proving too slick for Berwick in terrible conditions in round two. Players like Kealeigh Brown, Chloe Phillips, Britt Tyers and Caity Stephens are following the lead of Erin Clark – who is relishing her role of captain. These are two very proud netball clubs who will be both enjoy the spotlight of being the only game played on the day. The Eagles have a tough follow up against reigning premier Tooradin so will need to get over the top of the Magpies who take on ROC at their next start. All of a sudden, a two-game gap could appear if the Magpies can get the choccies.

Terrible conditions greeted all players in SEFNL last weekend. It will be close and well contested – but we’ll go for Beacy to get the job done in a nail-biter! The focus then switches to Anzac Day, where Tooradin welcomes a winless Cranbourne to the Tooradin Recreation Reserve. It’s part of the SEFNL itinerary that has become the most difficult journey to handle, the Seagulls at home is clearly the most daunting destination to visit at the moment. The Seagulls were ruthless against ROC last start. They edged away in the first half, extending a five-goal lead to eight at half time, but put the foot to the metal in the second half, scoring 32 goals to 12.

Netball Preview The Seagulls were so well drilled against the Kangas with Sara Duncan and Ebony Dolan keeping things tight in defence, while Jess Cox, Emma Iacovou and Tara Smith gave Alex Maher in particular an arm-chair ride in the circle. Cranbourne will need a very special effort indeed to win this one. Its form hasn’t been that bad, with single-figure losses to Doveton, Narre Warren and Beaconsfield – but this is the biggest challenge they will face this season. It’s almost tempting to tip the Eagles, you know they will bounce back hard, but after a tough fight they will eventually go down by another single-digit deficit. ROC will need to careful when Pakenham makes the trip to Starling Road on Anzac Day. On form, players like Olivia Hamilton, Laura Quinn, Alisha Young and Georgie Douglas should guide the Kangaroos home, but the Lions will be eyeing this one off as a potential upset. The win column won’t show it but Lions have improved from last year, with Lauren Wenn, Caitlin Cooke and Jenna Douglas all showing very good signs in the early part of the season. But the Kangas will get the job done. And Berwick and Doveton will finish off a week-long feast of netball with an interesting clash at Edwin Flack Reserve. There’s no grey area with the Doves, they either win well or lose convincingly, and that’s something that Liz Edwards will look to work on as the season unfolds.

Edwards has had great support through the midcourt with Kyla Quinn, Hayley Stewart and Chelsea Imanisani all following her lead in the win against Pakenham last start, and they’ll be looking to repeat the dose against the Wickers. Berwick has had a tough start against Beaconsfield and Narre Warren and will see this as an opportunity to get closer to a win. But the Doves will finish off the Anzac Round with a victory.

Tooradin coach Kelly Andrews will be hoping to keep the Eagles grounded on Anzac Day.

Netball Notes Narre Warren

What a huge contrast in weather conditions from last week. The girls endured wind, rain and even hail but all teams managed to play out the game. An achievement in itself! Great effort to the senior teams with 4 wins again this week. Go Magpies! U13 White: Berwick 24 Def Narre 12 Cold and early start for the girls at Berwick. The girls displayed a great team effort showing some really positive signs but unfortunately, we couldn’t get the win. Our best on awards went to Zoey who worked tirelessly throughout the mid court, Tahni was fantastic with her defensive pressure down the court and picking up a lot of loose balls and Avani was great down both ends of the court showing her versatility. U13 Red: Berwick 25 Def Narre 15 Good effort girls in such tough conditions and competition. No win today. We picked up our game in the 2nd and 4th quarters with some great passages of play at both ends but particularly consistent mid court by Tahlia. U15 White: Berwick 22 def Narre 19 U15 Red: Berwick 36 def Narre 10 Tough game in tough conditions, again we didn’t come into the game with enough intensity and it took us until the 3rd to get going. Best on Holly Simpson for her great work in GK and positive talk on court, Holly V and Lainey also for their consistent hard work. U17 White Narre: 19 def Berwick 17 A terrific team effort today played in the pouring rain. Despite the conditions, everyone played with determination and showed great teamwork, never giving up, resulting in a win by 2. Special mention to Portia, Ruby M and Ruby S who showed their true potential today. U17 Red: Berwick 27 def Narre 24 In shocking conditions, the girls came up against a very strong Berwick line up. Winning the first half, unfortunately we went down by 3 at the final whistle. Final score 24-27. Lots for us to take away, but credit to the team considering the rain and wind that they endured. Award winners Kasey and Molly. D Grade: Narre 41 def Berwick 12 Despite the cold, windy and wet conditions, the girls started strongly and held the lead at each break. Utilising turnovers in defence, the team had some good passages of play through the mid-court down to the goalers who converted accurately. A strong team effort. Best on court awards went to Jess, Mikayla and Nat. C Grade: Narre 35 def Berwick 10 Fantastic game girls in wet and windy conditions. Pressure all over the court was phenomenal. Increased our score at each quarter with the final score 35 to 10. Awards Hayley Rae, Jess and Alex. B Grade: Narre 53 def Berwick 13 Rain, wind and cold weather was what B grade endured. A fantastic team game was played by every one of these ladies. Welcome to new comer to our club, Olivia, who played an awesome defensive game. Final score 53-13. Award winners Jayde, Tamika, Amy and Olivia. A Grade: Narre 50 def Berwick 30

Despite the terrible conditions the girls applied great pressure in the first quarter, setting the tone for the remainder of the game. We worked consistently over four quarters, adapting to a number of positional changes. A really solid team effort today. Awards: Caity S, Brit T, Erin, Chloe and Kealeigh. Cranboune Round 2 saw us take on Beaconsfield at Holm Park Reserve and in contrast to the last round’s glorious sunshine, we battled the cold in trying conditions against a determined Beaconsfield. Despite their best efforts, unfortunately both our Under 13 teams lost their matches, White were defeated 18 to 6 and our Red team lost 27 to 14. The Under 15’s turned it around and both teams had convincing wins over Beaconsfield, White won 26 to 10 and Red won 28 to 14. The 17 White team had a close battle, controlling the match for 3 quarters, unfortunately just losing by 2 goals at 14 to 12, while the Red team were triumphant winners 23 to 17. Our Senior sides had a tough day, starting out with D Grade in a nail biter, winning an exciting match by 1 goal, final score was 27 to 26. A determined C Grade lost 18 to 29 despite plenty of pressure from their defence and backup from all players, B Grade lost 35 to 23 and A Grade had a valiant effort against Beaconsfield in a close match but just couldn’t close the gap in the end losing by 8 goals, 39 to 31. Best On Court vs Beaconsfield: A Grade – Steph, B Grade – Sammy, C Grade – Brodie, D Grade – Ashleigh, 17 Red - Grace, 17 White – Cassie, 15 Red – Everyone, 15 White – Emily, 13 Red – Emily & 13 White – Sophie G. Just a reminder to all players that our Club Fundraiser this year is a Chef’s Toolbox Raffle – tickets have all been distributed at $20 per ticket, all players are asked to sell a minimum of 2 tickets. Tickets and money are to be returned by Thursday 3rd May to Lee-Anne Hetherington, Bec Sparks or Jackie Butler. The raffle will be drawn on Thursday 10th May, just in time for Mother’s Day. There are 3 fantastic prizes on offer including a KitchenAid Cook Processor valued at $2,099, a KitchenAid Mixer valued at $879 and a Chef’s Toolbox pack. Be In It To Win It! The club would like to thank some of our 2018 Player Sponsors for their support this year – Abcon Concrete, Premier Builders Group and Ashmore Excavations. Your support is greatly appreciated! This week we are off to Tooradin to play in our traditional Anzac Day round, I’m sure it will be a fantastic day of hard fought matches played in the Anzac Spirit, as we remember our fallen who gave their lives for this great country we call home. Good Luck to all teams this round. Lest We Forget.

Netball Notes Beaconsfield A GRADE - With a wet & windy day, both sides were limited to slow & steady netball. The conditions were reflected in the score, both sides even throughout the game.Beacy made the most of the drying courts in the 4th,playing a more intense qtr to get up by 8goals.Abbie was outstanding in her 1st game back, creating strong defence with Dani, while Bianca & Dani made every goal count in the last. Awards:Abbie,Dani,Zoe B GRADE - In trying conditions the girls pushed out to a lead that was pegged back with Cranbourne hitting their goals in the 2nd for a 3goal advantage at halftime. Changes to the attack proved fruitful with U17 Bessie Murphy making her senior debut.Defensive efforts from Gabby & Caity supplied turnovers with Beacy finishing with a victory in difficult weather. Awards:Caity,Mackenzie,Gabby C GRADE - Considering how awful the conditions were it was great to see the girls come away with the win.It was certainly a defenders game. Awards:Poss,Vicky,Bec D GRADE - Playing in torrential conditions our girls played a well fought out game,it was a game with numerous lead changes. Both attacking ends were working well, with the wind causing some problems,it kept the defence on their toes.Great to see again we played 4 qtrs, however just falling short going down by 1. Awards:Shelley,Taylah,Sam U17 RED - In wet & windy conditions Beacy took on Cranbourne.Cran took the lead early & continued to push out the margin each qtr.Beacy found some fighting spirit early in the last but it wasn’t enough to come away with the win. Awards:Hannah U17 WHITE - 17s were off to a slow start, taking the 1st half to warm up & settle with the winds & rain! They responded well to a spray at 1/2 time, switched on & started putting into play what we have been learning at training. The midcourt worked hard at attacking the ball onto the ring, making it easier for themselves to get the ball into our goalers.Defenders worked well on their tight one on one defence, focusing on little feet & they got plenty of deflections & tips!Goalers once confidence was gained, there was no stopping them!An awesome team effort got us across the line! Awards:Chloe,Alicia,Sienna U15 RED - 15’s were lucky to play without the wet weather adding another element to contend with as the wind & Cranbourne’s force were already enough!Beacy made some improvements on last week’s game, including being more decisive when moving the ball down the court & making good decisions when in possession of the ball. This was terrific progress in a fast game with consistent pressure.Well done for making adjustments as the game went on & for only a 1goal difference in the final qtr. Awards-Tahlia,Ariah,Millie

U15 WHITE - The girls game up against a strong side in Cranbourne this week in windy & wet conditions. Thankyou to the girls who all listened to instructions & tried their hardest for the whole game which was very pleasing to see.I really enjoyed the opportunity to coach you while Mia was away. There were plenty of positives to take away from the game & I’m sure they’ll only improve over the coming weeks. Awards:Tahlia,Darcy P,Imogen U13 RED - It may have been wild & windy, but that didn’t stop the girls going out & giving the game their all. They started the game strong & maintained the momentum all the way until the final whistle, something they were looking to work on following last week’s loss. Our defenders, Charlotte,Paige & Sami hunted the ball & read the play, rewarding themselves with intercepts. Keira,Jemma & Kyana moved the ball well in both the centre & goal third & also proved their versatility in their defensive game. Our goalers, Eliza & Tiarna, evaluated the wind & worked together to get the closest shot, rewarding the team with a win. Awards:Paige,Jemma,Sami U13 WHITE - The girls played a great game, they were determined to take home the win & worked hard for all 4 qtrs. They worked the ball well down the court & our goalers moved well in the ring. Some excellent defensive pressure caused lots of turnovers & was rewarded down our goaling end. Awards-Ellie,Millie,Sienna

Berwick 13Reds The team started off strong and showed their true potential with team work on the court. They were not scared to put up a hard fight. As the game progressed, Narre made a strong comeback and turned the fight on. We were not willing to give up until the last siren. We are very proud of all our players start to this season. 13 Whites It was great to see the girls implementing what we’ve worked on at training, improving individually and collectively as a team! Credit to our girls for pushing themselves in all 4 quarters and coming away with a well deserved win. 15 Reds Another great start and considering the gale forced winds nothing stopped them in their path. The combination and linkage down the court was tremendous with the defence working endlessly to make it tough for the Narre Warren goalers. Our mid court used precision passing and feeding to provide the goalers with maximum opportunity to convert. We made every opportunity count coming away with a strong win. 15 Whites On a very windy cold day the team came home with a great hard fought win. I was very proud of how the girls settled after the 1st quarter and started using their strengths to their advantage. 17 Reds Today again held off a skilled and physical Narre team coming from behind to finish an 11-3 goal last quarter to win the game by 2.

Netball Notes Narre Warren’s circle craft and accuracy had them ahead each qtr. But with some exceptional centre pass conversions and turnovers our team hit their straps at the right time. Getting to know each other week by week will only improve this teams performance. 17 Whites As the game went on the weather started to show its strength. To both Narre and our girls credit, they didn’t let it affect the close and determined game both sides displayed from the start. With strong turnovers occurring from our defenders, the girls kept finding enthusiasm to bring the score back to level in the last quarter! A repeat of last week it came down to the final minutes, unfortunately we couldn’t quite get there this time. The girls should be very proud of their ability to use the teams strengths and of their never give up attitude. D Grade Narre as always are a tough opposition. There were great transitions creating many opportunities for our goalers, in the tough conditions the ball was just not sinking. To the girls credit they kept fighting having on average 7 turnovers per quarter a great effort from all players. We need to continue our work rate and work on conversion going into next weeks game. C Grade I thought the weather made it a very tough game for both teams we had a strong start only trailing by 2 after the first quarter. From there it proved to be too much for our girls with a lapse in concentration and a few too many turnovers Narre were able to gain a comfortable lead. Despite our girls best efforts we just couldn’t get back in it going down by 25 after the final whistle. B Grade The team again faces challenges with weather and a physical Narre Warren side that bumped us out of most contests. The teams defence intercepts were not rewarded. Team Struggling with consistency and inaccuracy. This week off gives the team chance to regroup and focus on next couple of games to reduce the gap. A Grade We were jumped by an experienced Narre warrens with speed and accuracy with a quick 10 goal gap. Team belief was boosted by a vocal Karie Burt winning the 3rd qtr where the A grade found that keeping possession and converting related the amazing defence turnovers. Each week this young side is finding more about what they can do.

Pakenham Round 2 provided us with horrendous weather conditions with strong winds and at times torrential rain and hail at Doveton. Congratulations to our U13 Red, U13 White and U17 White on strong convincing wins. We witnessed with our A, B, C, D, U17 Red and U15 Red & White the potential we have within these teams with some great passages of play shown. At training as a club we have refocused, worked positively towards capturing this potential to ensure four quarters of consistent competitive netball in preparation for today’s games against ROC. We held our first meal night for the clubs last week, which was a great success. Massive thanks goes to team

of inspirational volunteers that made it all happen, led admirably by our meal coordinator Jo. At Pakenham we are so fortunate to have so many members/families that so willingly put up their hands to volunteer and be involved for our club’s benefit and their contributions are so extremely valued and appreciated. The club held its first social event for the year on Saturday night and a great time was had by all. Community club sport has so much to offer, not only playing the sport you are passionate about but making life time friendships and at Pakenham we embrace the concept that our club is our player’s “netty family’’. We are truly honored to play today given the significance of this being ANZAC Day our national day of remembrance in both Australia and New Zealand where we commemorate those who gallantly served and those who gave their lives in all wars, conflicts and peace keeping to make Australia the wonderful home it is for us all. Lest we forget.

ROC ROC’s juniors held up the club on Saturday by coming away with all the points. C Grade took away ‘nail biter of the day’ with an impressive ‘come from behind’ win. We got our first real taste of this outside winter sport we all love with typical Melbourne weather... rain, hail, wind, sunshine - you name it!! Big week at training for all teams this week as we prepare for the great honour of playing on ANZAC day. Netball Notes Tooradin-Dalmore Round-2 saw us head to Officer to take on ROC, where we came away with some great results in very testing conditions not usually seen this early in the season. Let’s hope it’s not a sign of things to come. With a few key players out, A-Grade showed their depth to still come away with a solid win. Special mention goes to Sara Duncan who stepped up and filled the gap in defence and had an awesome game, earning herself the MVP award. Our B-Grade and D-Grade teams also had convincing wins to build upon on their success in Round-1. It was remiss of us to not mention that the Leanne Ansalde played her 100th game for the club in the first round. Leanne has been an integral defender and goaler for the club for many years and also a valued club person and committee member, so we congratulate on her reaching this milestone! Unfortunately, C-Grade just went down by one goal in what was a tight game all day with ROC. The girls put in a great effort and have identified what they can improve to work on getting those wins in the future. While our junior girls didn’t get any wins on the day, we were still impressed with their efforts across the board against, particularly from the 13s and 17s Red teams, against some very strong ROC teams. Some highlights from the day included a great game from Brooklyn Diwell in the 13s White team who moved really well and Lily Boyd who killed it in defence in the 15s White team, both earning themselves BOC. Congratulations goes to Sasha Williams from the 15s Red who played her 50th junior game for our club. A great

milestone and achievement from one of our dedicated young Gulls who puts so much into her netball. This week we take on Cranbourne for our first home game for the season on Anzac Day. It’s great to get back to our tradition of having our game on Anzac Day and we look forward as a club to honouring the Anzac spirit and paying tribute to and remembering those who have served for our country. There will be an Anzac service prior to the A-Grade and Senior Football games, and we’ll also be commemorating Anzac Day throughout the day in other ways including a minute silence before the Under-17s games. Come along and join us for a great day of netball and football. GO SEAGULLS!!

Doveton Today we travel to Berwick for what we hope will be a great day of footy and netball. The A Grade girls had a good win over Pakenham last time out and should be ready to hit the ground running after a weekend off. Mel Webster and Mikaela Dakic defended well against Pakenham and we look forward to big games from those two girls again today. We won all four senior games against Pakenham which gave a really good feeling around the club. We split the points with Pakenham in the juniors winning three games each. Good luck to all Doveton Football and Netball teams taking on Berwick today.
