Record Umpires Round... The third team on the park

Round 4 Saturday 5th May 2018

Tooradin-Dalmore v Beaconsfield Pakenham v Berwick Narre Warren v Officer

AFL South East Just like every footballer and netballer who participates on the AFL South East sporting fields this weekend, our umpires will endeavour to produce their very best. And, just like those footballers and netballers, every decision won’t be perfect with a split-second to decide whether to blow the whistle or wave it around in the age-old signal to ‘play on’.

(SEWF) begins this week with 29 teams from 22 clubs competing across three divisions. We welcome a new team from Pakenham and wish the club well as it joins the fast-growing popularity boom that is women’s football.

Our umpires play a huge role in community sport.

While on the women’s game, it’s great to see preparations in full swing for the interleague clash between our SEWF girls and the Northern Football League on May 19.

This weekend we celebrate our umpires - the 582 men, women and up-and-comers who patrol the AFL South East Region on a weekly basis – with the 2018 Community Umpiring Week.

And the girls are in good hands too, with coach Megan Snart sharing her knowledge and passion for the game with players from 10 different clubs across the SEWF landscape.

On Wednesday night, members of our local umpiring community were lucky enough to have several currentday AFL umpires facilitate training sessions at local venues.

Interleague weekend will be massive for AFLSE this year.

Hayden Gavine, Chris Gordon and Shane McInerney visited Kananook, while Craig Fleer, Andrew Mitchell and ‘Razor’ Ray Chamberlain took control of the session at Carlisle Park in Cranbourne. Our local umpires received a huge buzz from having those elite umpires in attendance. We wish every one of our umpires well on the weekend. The second season of South Eastern Women’s Football

Across the region we will field interleague teams in juniors (2), seniors (2) and women’s football (1), with under-17 and senior netball squads in SEFNL making for a busy but very rewarding time on the calendar. And what a round of exciting matches we have today. In MPNFL Division Two we have a top-of-the-table clash between two undefeated sides when Chelsea host Dromana in the Match of the Day. It’s a status that has eluded Chelsea for many years and it’s great to see the Seagulls back in form and drawing good crowds. It’s a very similar situation for the Officer Senior Football Club in the SEFNL. The Kangaroos host Narre Warren today, also a game between two teams that are yet to taste defeat in 2018. The Kangaroos have not played finals for 15 years and seem ready to break their drought. In netball, Tooradin-Dalmore host Beaconsfield in another contest of the undefeated, while Seaford and Sorrento are just one win away from setting up a huge clash of the same description at Sorrento next week.

At the opposite end of the scale, but equally important to both clubs, we have Tyabb and Crib Point looking for their first wins of the season on the footy field. Hopefully the contests will be as close and as tight as the battles at Olympic Oval last week, where Rosebud and Seaford put on a smorgasbord of close finishes. Rosebud won the under-19s by two points, Seaford answered by the same margin in the reserves before the teams couldn’t be split in an exhilarating finish to the seniors. AFL Vic Country Community Umpiring Round The significant role community umpires play in our great game will be highlighted this weekend, as AFL Victoria and the wider football community pause to celebrate 2018 Community Umpiring Week. Held from May 4 - 6, the annual event is designed to recognise those patrolling the boundary, manning the goal line and controlling the action out in the middle each week, and the contribution they play in our game. In Victoria alone, there are more than 7,000 registered umpires at community level, along with thousands of clubbased umpires, who commit their time and energy to allow those chasing the Sherrin the chance to do so safely. To celebrate the occasion, a host of AFL Umpires will forgo their usual training session and instead disband and travel to several community umpiring groups across Victoria to engage with local members and facilitate training sessions. These opportunities are highly valued by local umpiring groups where their members are provided with an extended chance to engage with members of the elite AFL umpiring panel. In addition, a number of young developing community umpires will head to IKON Park to develop their skills and knowledge of the game in a special coaching session under the guidance of some of the game’s national umpiring coaches. AFL Head Umpire Coach Hayden Kennedy will lead the event and take the fortunate umpires through their paces in an on-field training session and provide an insight to how AFL Umpires are coached. Furthermore, a host of lucky members of community umpiring groups will lead out their AFL counterparts at all of AFL matches in Round 7 and enjoy a taste of an AFL Umpire’s match-day experience. Furthermore, in all Round 7 AFL games, a host of local community umpires will meet the appointed AFL umpires prior to the game and have the chance to walk with them on to the ground. Community Umpiring Week is also another opportunity to encourage those who want to be involved in the greatest game in the world to take up umpiring.

Across Victoria, huge efforts are being made to attract umpires from all walks of life, with the development of Diversity Umpire Academies and Female Umpiring Academies growing from strength to strength. If you are new to the game, or your playing days are over, then umpiring is a great way to contribute to community football. Regardless of your age, gender, culture or ability, anyone can get involved in umpiring and enjoy the many benefits the roles provide. Not only do you get the best view of the action, but it helps keep you fit, be part of a team and learn leadership skills that you can take with you when you walk off the ground. For details on how you can become an umpire, visit www. aflvic.com.au/umpiring or simply visit http://www.umpireafl.info/

Footy Preview The big show comes to town By David Nagel The focus of the SEFNL football community zooms in on Starling Road this afternoon for the Match of the Day between two undefeated teams in Officer and Narre Warren. Gaining a share of the headline space has been a constant battle for the Kangaroos since the then Casey Cardinia Football League began in 2005. While Doveton, Narre Warren, Pakenham, Cranbourne, Beaconsfield and Berwick have all racked up premiership success, and Tooradin-Dalmore paved a preliminary final path in 2012, the Kangaroos have sat out and watched the September action unfold. Thirteen years of competition with not one finals campaign. But this could be the year when that finals dream is fulfilled, with the Kangas sitting three-zip and high-rolling it at the top of the table. But for coach Doug Koop the battle has only now just began. “It’s great for the club that we’ve started the season so well but we totally understand that we’ve still got a stack of work to do,” Koop said. “We’ve had three good wins, but until we start being competitive on a consistent basis with the better teams in the competition we really haven’t proven anything. “We need to challenge the front runners and Narre Warren is certainly the front runner at this early stage of the season.” Koop, who was coach of Cranbourne when the Eagles had a bitter rivalry with the Magpies from 2010 to 2013 – the Golden Years of Footy some might say – took over at Starling Road in 2017 with some very basic measures of improvement. “I think our main focus was to improve the culture around the place, and we’ve done that this year by bringing in some experience from other clubs,” Koop said. “We also needed to improve the general understanding of how the game is played, the basics of playing football, and we needed to do that if we wanted to participate in finals footy.

Aaron Wilson has provided a great target for Narre Warren this year and will need to be watched closely by Officer. “We’re certainly not there yet but the door is open and the opportunity is there if we’re prepared to work hard and grasp it with both hands.” Koop, who is the second year of a three-year term, said his team was still learning that taking risks is the only way to head to the ultimate destination in football. “They had basically forgotten how to attack and were too scared to make mistakes,” Koop said of his first season at the club last year. “But that’s what footy is, a game of mistakes, and it comes down to who manages their mistakes best and can capitalise on the oppositions.” The Kangaroos had a tough day at the office on Anzac Day against Pakenham, but found a way to win a game that probably would have eluded them in the past. Recruits Stephen Hawkins and Jayce Valentine chimed in with three goals apiece while Blair Allan, Matty Clarke and Michael Thompson were also productive with two each. James Waldon continues to grow his reputation as one of the most improved defenders in the business, while Sean Roach has taken on the number-one ruck role with renewed enthusiasm. Koop said Roach has played a key role in the Kangaroos impressive start to the season.

Footy Preview “He’s a different footballer this year, he couldn’t run or kick too far last year but has really improved his mobility and it’s had huge effect on the team,” Koop said. “He’s gone from filling gaps last year to certainly being one of our most valuable players and has been exceptional in every game. I think we’ve got more out of him this year in three rounds than we did from our two ruckman all of last season.” Koop said the final piece of the puzzle had been the buy in from the existing group of senior players. “Last year we were trying to sell a message, but it only sunk in some of the time, where this year the core group of players have taken everything on board. “There are a lot of elements that need to happen to improve, but that buy in from the senior group certainly can’t be underestimated.” The Kangaroos take on a Narre Warren outfit that could hardly have been more impressive in the opening three rounds of the season. The Magpies appeared to have the toughest draw in the business with games against Cranbourne, Berwick and Beaconsfield – but have emerged unscathed to set the early benchmark for 2018. Nick and Stewie Scanlon and Aaron Wilson have been dangerous up forward while Brad Scalzo, Hayden Stagg and Trent Cody have been providing plenty of drive through the midfield. Jesse Davies has been exciting while five-time premiership player Col McNamara is rejuvenated after a lack-lustre 2017. Koop said his team is excited to take on the challenge. “I watched them last week and they were superimpressive and it’s going to be a great test to see where we’re at,” Koop said. This one should be a cracker – the Kangaroos, with an average age of 24.84 and with 15 players in that 22 to 27 age bracket, can no longer use the “young group” mentally to camouflage failure. This is their biggest test – and they’ll go down, but go down fighting by 13 points. Tooradin-Dalmore will look to turn its form around when the Seagulls welcome Beaconsfield to the banks of the Westernport. The Seagulls have failed to flatter this year, defeating Pakenham in round one before seven and nine-goal losses to Officer and Cranbourne respectively. The Seagulls closed to 15 points against Cranbourne on Anzac Day but conceded a 7.1 to 0.2 final term to throw away all of its hard work. Jason Kestle, Luke McKenna, Mat Sloper and Dean Warry were serviceable contributors for the Seagulls who simply ran out of legs in the final term. Julian Suarez and Andrew Dean booted five goals between them and will need to be deadly accurate for the Seagulls to knock down the Eagles – who will be fuming after their last-start loss to Narre Warren.

8

Jarrod Kemperman will lead Berwick’s big-man department against Pakenham. After a tight start the Eagles were blown away by the Magpies, conceding six goals in the second term and five in the last on their way to a comprehensive 72-point defeat. Despite the significance of the loss the Eagles will almost take a one-two start to the season after a tough beginning against Berwick, Cranbourne and the Magpies. The Eagles are capable of bouncing back in a hurry, with this game against the Seagulls followed by winnable clashes against Officer, Pakenham and Doveton. Champion ruckman Scott Meyer continues to shine for the Eagles, while Brad and Matt Homfray have really enjoyed being on the same footy field together. Jake Bowd and Kyle O’Sullivan continue to run and carry while Corey Walker is one of the most dependable defenders in the league. But the Eagles require a more even contribution around the ground. Neither team is playing great enough footy to blow the other away, so we’re looking at a tough and tight contest where efficiency in front of the big sticks could tell the winning tale at the end of the day. If Andrew Dean fires, the Seagulls could win this – but we’ll go for the Eagles by 11 points. Berwick has been removed from the main billboard on Broadway at the moment but will continue its charge towards finals with a trip to Toomuc Reserve to take on Pakenham.

Footy Preview Narre Warren has stolen the Wickers spotlight in the early part of the season, defeating last year’s premiers in round two. The Wickers did not enjoy their first taste of defeat in 20 outings and took it out on Doveton last week, kicking 22 goals in an 89-point demolition job. Harry Money was sensational with nine goals while quality performers like Ash Smith, Jo West, Travis Tuck, Bryce Rutherford and Michael Riseley all quickly put that Narre Warren loss behind them. No-one likes to lose – but you get the feeling that loss to the Magpies will not harm the Wickers one little bit as the season rolls on. Any semblance of complacency has now been removed from the conversation altogether. That’s the issue for Ash Green and his Pakenham coaching staff this week – trying to stop a talented Berwick list that now has renewed hunger. Players like Madi Andrews, Tim Gunn, Luke Sheppard and Riley Heddles will have the next instalment against the Magpies already pencilled in on Saturday June 2. But first the Wickers need to get past the Lions, who have been competitive in all three games this season. Heart-and-soul players like Chris Cardona and Jack Kowarzik are leading from the front while Jimmy Harrison – a Berwick premiership player last year – and Steve O’Bryan have the quality to trouble any opposition at the top of their game. The Lions have relied on effort this year to be competitive – but class will prevail this time around with the Wickers to win by eight goals plus. Doveton and Cranbourne have the week off after playing their round four encounter on Good Friday.

Footy Notes Pakenham ANZAC Day 2018 saw Pakenham front up against Officer in the traditional highway rivalry game. Beautiful weather and a terrific crowd made the Officer ground the perfect place to spend ANZAC Day afternoon. The Under 19’s and the Reserves were able to come out as convincing winners in their games and assembled with the rest of the players from both the football and netball clubs to participate in a solemn ceremony of remembrance for our fallen. The seniors ran out full of purpose and were able to keep up with Officer until the last quarter when Officer ran away with the win. Some great individual efforts were seen from the Pakenham players but it was most pleasing to see them finding their team spirit and putting it to good use in some great passages of play throughout the game. The working bee on Saturday saw a small but incredibly enthusiastic band accomplish a great deal. The clubrooms are now far less cluttered and the bins quite a bit fuller. Thanks to all that gave up their Saturday to help make the club a pleasant place for all. Congratulations must go out to our hard- working Treasurer, Nathan ‘Sauce’ Brown and his lovely wife on the birth of their first child, a beautiful daughter. Welcome to parenthood guys. The first match for our women’s team is coming up this Friday night at 7pm against Officer. The players and their coaching staff have been working very hard for months to get to this point and are eager to run out in the Pakenham colours at our home ground. The rest of the club are equally excited and are looking forward to getting along and support them in their first game. Go Pakky!

After a great start to the day in perfect conditions with the 19’s setting a standard to be followed for the rest of the day it went down hill from there. The reserves under manned fought out to the end which was great. The seniors started the first qtr in excellent form matching all areas of the contest however some early injuries then lead to a landslide of issues for the team. In front of a packed stadium that was hosting our past players function the day went from bad to worse with Narre clearly outplaying our guys for the next 3 quarters running away with an easy victory After a tough defeat the guys have put that behind them and now travel to Tooradin where we plan on getting back on track. Macca and the team have worked exceptionally hard away from the track with a great night at the races and Clip n Climp finished off with a club function dress up party that no doubt has some great talking points . Our senior women’s start their 2019 campaign this week travelling to Chirnside Park after winning the flag in 2018 we now find ourselves in a very competitive completion being pushed up to Div. 1 . Good luck ladies Beaconsfield now have tickets available for our monster raffle with excellent prizes to be drawn in August. There are also limited tickets available as they are selling very quickly for the annual ladies day luncheon at Beaconsfield on the 12th of may Pink ribbon round so please contact our club or follow our social media feeds Go Beacy

Beaconsfield

Well after a great Day of Tradition for all clubs and community celebrating and paying our respects to the ANZACs its now time to get back to footy for Beacy I would like to thank Eric Chaplain from the Upper Beaconsfield RSL who started the day off talking to our guys and then reading the soldiers prayer followed by the ODE

On ANZAC Day we hosted one of our oldest rivals Pakenham in hard fought contest that saw the lads take home their 3rd successive ANZAC Day Trophy against a fast finishing side. Sean Patrick Roach continued his run of good form and was awarded the ANZAC Day Medal by the match officials for his best on ground performance. Sean was also a prominent feature in last weeks addition of the record, the Pakenham Gazette and this mention here today should insure that he parts ways with his hard earned money at next Thursdays fines. The day also saw our Women’s side play their final practice match against Nyora in a fiery contest. Fortunately the girls emerged victorious in the dying moments of the game in an outstanding performance.

Footy Notes Round 3 for the club was of course about far more than football. It was great to see many players and supporters showing their respects at the Dawn Service held at the front gate of the Recreation Reserve in addition to all those who came down to watch the game. The club is happy to announce that overall in excess of $2,000 was raised and donated to the Pakenham RSL, a great deal of which was player driven. Combi Capers (the Coffee Cart) also donated more than $200 and we would like to thank all those who contributed and raised money for a great cause. This week we face our biggest test yet against the in form Narre Warren Football Club who come into this game undefeated with impressive wins against tough opposition. Whilst there are no easy games in the competition, Narre Warren have proven themselves the side to beat so far and we are excited by the challenge they present. Finally, this Saturday sees the club kick off its social calendar for the year with our Australian Cocktail Night in the R G Porter Social Rooms. The night is set to be a cracker and we look forward to seeing everybody there. Good luck to all our team this weekend. Narre Warren

Narre’s Seniors and Reserves brought their A-games to Beacy last round and scored solid wins, while our 19s went down to the top side by 10 points. Seniors: After a tight, even first quarter, Narre cracked the game open as Nick and Stewie Scanlon kicked two each in our 6.4 to 0.1 second term. The seven-goal margin at the long break really shaped the remainder of the day. Beacy seemed intent on minimising the damage and left their forward half empty for long periods in the second half, but Narre’s creative ball use still found ways to goal. Again this was a 22 player effort from Narre. Brad Scalzo showed why we worked so hard to bring him back to the club with a best-on performance, while Matt Soroczynski was awarded the Anzac Day medal by the umpires. Staggy and Trent Cody had plenty in the midfield; Jesse Davies continues to impress, and Richo showed his versatility filling a variety of roles. Reserves: Narre’s impressive Twos welcomed back Jake Gray and Bobby Harvey – two previous Reserves premiership players for the club – who found a bit of the footy and will be better for the run. Narre built a lead early then won every quarter convincingly to run out 69 point winners. Mitch Van der Loop, Chris Collins and Brenton Wells cut a swathe through Beacy’s defence with 3 goals each. Paddy Andrews found his own footy and dominated in the air. Camm Miller and Nick Mashado

14

were in our best; and a special mention to Mitch Tonna who touched the clouds to take a legitimate speccy in the third quarter. Under 19s: Narre faced the top side in a very high standard display by some of the region’s finest young talent. Our effort across the ground was outstanding and we were just a kick off the lead in the final few frantic minutes. Beacy had the fitness and poise to hold us out, but we know where we need to improve and we have 13 more rounds to refine our game. Joel Zietsman was Narre’s best, resuming after an injury has curtailed his preparation. Sharpie hit the packs at full tilt and contributed with many score involvements. Dylan Mutimer was good all day and big Max Sheppard presented well and crashed the packs for our little blokes. Inter-League: Well done to the nine Narre senior players invited to train for our Inter-league representative side – Trent Cody, Michael Collins, Jesse Davies, Tom Miller, Jake Richardson, Brad Scalzo, Nick Scanlon, Trent Shinners, and Josh Tonna. Fox Road redevelopment: Progress continues on our social club with plastering complete and internal fitout well underway. Thanks to ROC-Officer FNC for agreeing to swap today’s game to their ground to give us a little breathing space. We are confident in our ability to host our next home game v Doveton on 12 May. Big shout out to the forty or so blokes who turned out last Saturday for our big clean-up working bee. Awesome effort. Footy Notes Berwick

Tooradin-Dalmore

On a day we took on Doveton which normally turns out to be a tough enduring encounter we had the opportunity to put it all into perspective. In conjunction with the Berwick RSL we acknowledged ANZAC day with current and former serving members of our armed forces. In an always moving service the line of footballers, netballers and committee of both clubs stretched from the boundary to the centre of the ground. Yes....it does put it all into perspective, a great game as it is, its still just a game. We all get to go home afterwards. Doveton were not able to field an under 19s team and I know the effort that Aaron and the DFC have put into remedying this situation but disappointing it did not come to bare fruit. Our Reserves and Seniors both had comfortable wins after a couple of late withdrawals. You may have noticed the comotion around the social rooms as we upgrade the ceiling tiles, install a new heater as well as build a new coaches room with a viewing area and a new office. We have also put in disabled toilets which has been long overdue. Thank you to the committee, members and sponsors who rolled up their sleeves to make this happen in record time. DONT FORGET.....OUR FAMOUS LADIES DAY, ON PINK RIBBON ROUND May 12th See Vicki Andrews or Tanya Vaughan

First of all a big thank you to those from the TooradinDalmore and Cranbourne Football Netball Clubs for the fantastic mark of respect that both clubs paid to Anzac Day. Both clubs should be proud of the respectful way we have marked one of the most important days on the Australian calendar - and long may it continue. There wasn’t such great news on the football field with all three teams going down to our neighbours from up the road. The seniors fought back bravely to trail by just 15 points at the final break but were overrun by a powerful Cranbourne unit in the final quarter. Some of our recruits from the last couple of years like Jason Kestle, Luke McKenna, Dean Warry and Matt Sloper could hold their heads high in defeat. The reserves were level with Cranbourne at three-quarter time but lost by seven points in a very brave effort. The unders were outmuscled by bigger bodies but never gave up for the whole four quarters...we’re proud of your efforts boys. Today we welcome Beaconsfield for a really important game for both clubs. With both of us losing last week it adds extra significance for the winner and loser. Thanks to all of our great sponsors, including Gendore who have been a wonderful supporter of the club for many years. Go you Seagulls!

A huge hurdle for the Kangaroos to overcome By David Nagel It’s fair to say that wins against Narre Warren have been as rare as hen’s teeth for Officer as it prepares for today’s topof-the-table clash against the Magpies at Starling Road. The two clubs formed part of the South West Gippsland Football League (SWGFL), which began in 1954, and battled strongly until the then ROC Football Club made the move to the West Gippsland Football League (WGFL) in 1979. ROC spent 23 years in the WGFL, preceding a successful three years from 2002 to 2004 in the West Gippsland Latrobe West Division. Narre Warren remained in the SWGFL until the league’s conclusion in 1994, before spending 10 years in various forms of the Mornington Peninsula Nepean Football league (MPNFL). So that brings us to 2005 where, after a 26-year absence of competition between the two clubs, the Kangaroos and Magpies renewed acquaintances in the newly-formed Casey Cardinia Football League. And it’s fair to say the Magpies have dominated proceedings since the two clubs reunited in battle. The clubs have met 20 times over the last 13 years, the Magpies holding a remarkable 19-1 winning record against the Kangaroos and an average winning margin of 71 points. The Magpies average 123 points per game – the Kangaroos 52. The Kangaroos came close to victory in that long awaited first clash between the clubs in round 11 2005. But Narre Warren, inspired by an eight-goal haul to Lee Clark, held off the Kangaroos in a 16.10.106 to 14.19.103 thriller. For ROC, Callum White kicked four, Matt Castricum three, while Ben Tivendale, Kable Dowsett and David Main kept the Magpies honest until the final siren. Youngster Dean Blake was also influential with the 19-year old showing his interleague selection was thoroughly deserved. The Kangaroos would have to wait until round 18, 2010, to have their only win against the Magpies since that original parting of ways back in 1979. And once again it would come down to a three-point thriller. Kris Fletcher was outstanding for ROC that day, kicking three in a clear best-on-ground display, while Phil Nanfra, Greg Tivendale and ruckman Kym Jones were also prominent in a 14.13.97 to 14.10.94 triumph. While the Kangaroos would celebrate, the Magpies would go on to have the last laugh with a 25-point victory in the 2010 grand final against Beaconsfield. Narre Warren club legends like Steven Kidd, Michael Collins and Nick Scanlon would stand tall to lead their side to victory. So for ROC/Officer – that 2010 victory in round 18 remains the only treasured memory against Narre Warren in at least the last 40 years.

The Magpies have won the last 12 contests between the two clubs. Only two players likely to line up this week, Ben Tivendale and Stephen Hawkins, remain from that 2010 success. Tivendale is now a 300-game club legend while Hawkins has returned after four years of traversing the football landscape. So there we have it, the Magpies sure to go in confident of improving an already incredible record against Doug Koop’s Kangaroos who have maturity now on their side. History shows that an average age of 24.84 is just about prime time for a football club to succeed - but this is their biggest test. Will it be business as usual for the Magpies, or will Koop and co add a rare and precious gem to those hen’s teeth?

Ben Tivendale is a rare breed of Kangaroo having tasted success against Narre Warren. 2010 - ROUND 18 – THE KANGAROOS LAST WIN OVER THE MAGPIES ROC

Umpires Round Community Umpiring Week a real winner By David Nagel

White Black PMS 165 C

A free tank of petrol lured Ray Chamberlain into umpiring – and it’s fair to say his career has ran like a well-oiled machine ever since. Chamberlain, or ‘Razor Ray’ as he is well known, was at Carlisle Park in Cranbourne on Wednesday night, joined by fellow AFL umpire Craig Fleer as part of Community Umpire Round. To celebrate the occasion, a host of AFL Umpires gave up their usual training session and travelled to community umpiring groups across Victoria to engage with local members and facilitate training sessions. For Chamberlain, it brought back memories of his own beginnings as an umpire in Canberra. “Mum took me down to watch my younger brother, the umpire didn’t turn up so the president of the club asked me to do it and said, ‘We’ll fill your car up with petrol and make sure no one hangs it on you today,” Chamberlain recalls. “A bloke called Bob Stacey came up to me at half time and asked me how long I had been umpiring. I told him 40 minutes, we had a laugh and it just sort of took off from there. I loved footy, I was a decent runner and understood the game pretty well – that’s where it all began.” Chamberlain has forged quite a career since those early days, working his way through junior and senior football, then the TAC Cup and VFL to become a high-profile and polarising figure in the game. He recently umpired his 300th AFL game, in a career that includes the 2010 grand final and replay, and the 2011 International Rules Series. Chamberlain thinks there is still room for personality in the umpiring ranks. “I believe you shouldn’t act like someone that you’re not, and as long as your intentions are good and you stay within the guidelines that have been set out, then there is room to express yourself with your umpiring,“ he said. “We have very strict guidelines in regard to respecting the participants of the game. You can have a personality but Width 80mm

you can’t step outside of those.” Chamberlain said his self-assuredness comes from being thoroughly prepared for each outing. “I get as anxious and as nervous as anyone, I’ve even vomited before games because you don’t want to bugger it up and spoil the game for the players and everyone involved,“ he said. “I get my confidence from the work I do during the week, making sure I’m physically prepared and I’ve thoroughly thought through my decision-making process. “If I make a mistake, and we all do, it won’t be because I haven’t prepared and done everything in my power to perform at my best.” The 41-year-old had some great advice for umpires who are just starting out on their journey. “Listen to your coaches because none of them want to see you fail,” he said. “Most of the time they provide opportunities for improvement, and not many pats on the back, but just understand that that’s their job and they are just trying to help you. “Have passion, have intent, and don’t limit yourself to other people’ ideas. I had a dream of umpiring an AFL Grand Final and people laughed at me but I did everything possible and have been fortunate enough to have that happen. “Don’t let anyone stamp on your dreams.” Those interested in taking up umpiring can contact ALFSE Regional Director of Umpiring Carl Fletcher via email at umpiring@aflse.com.au

Interleague Football By David Nagel The interleague experience is beginning to grow on members of the South Eastern Women’s Football (SEWF) squad as it prepares for the big clash against the Northern Football League on May 19. The SEWF team will run on to Preston City Oval at high noon, following the under 19s game at 10am and prior to the senior game which features the number three and four ranked teams in the state. It’s going to be a huge day of football, one not lost on SEWF coach Megan Snart who said her girls are starting to feel the excitement of the build up to the historic clash between the two leagues. “A lot of the girls probably didn’t understand too much about the interleague concept but they’re all very excited now after the first training session,“ said the Eastern Devils premiership coach of 2017. “The calibre of girls we have is just outstanding and really indicative of the standard in South Eastern Women’s Football. It’s great to see so much talent, but it’s going to make it very difficult from a coaching perspective to trim the squad back – it’s not going to be easy.” A total of 62 players were invited to try out, with the squad to be trimmed back to 25 by game day. Snart said there was one particular strength in the squad that stood out at the first try out on April 18. “We have a lot of pace in the team, I think that will be our strength, and some very skilful players who can use the ball beautifully,“ Snart explained.

“But using that pace to full advantage is definitely going to be the key factor that we base our structures around. But really, for me, it’s all about the players learning something new and taking the opportunity to showcase their talents.” So what does she know about Northern? “It’s not my style to worry too much about the opposition, if you worry about them too much you tend to lose focus on what your own objectives are,” Snart said. “I’ve done a little bit of research on Northern but we’ll stick to our own guns and see where that will take us.” Snart said coaching against one of the pioneers of women’s football, Chyloe Kurdas, made the experience all the more exciting. “It’s a great honour and a little bit intimidating to be coaching against her to be honest,” she said. “She has one of the great records, and is respected right throughout women’s football so it’s going to be a real highlight to coach against her on the day.” The reigning SEWF Coach of the Year said she was getting genuinely excited about the game as it drew closer. “I’m extremely nervous about the whole thing but it gives me comfort that I am receiving great support from the league and we’re all on the same page about what is important,“ Snart said. “Rod (Women’s Football Operations Manager Rod Hamilton) has been fantastic, very supportive, and hasn’t put huge expectations on us to win at all costs. “For all of us it is all about showcasing the girls’ skills and showing the depth of talent we have in our league.”

With the big game at Holm Park Reserve fast approaching, under-19s coach Leigh McQuillen put his talented squad through its paces on Wednesday night. “We’ve got some very talented young players, but we need to come together as a team and work for each other and hopefully come away with a good result.” The squad will train again on Wednesday May 9 before rounding out preparations with two training sessions in the week leading up to the game. SEWF Season Launch A new beginning for the Lions The highly-anticipated season two of South Eastern Women’s Football (SEWF) begins this weekend with existing SEFNL teams Beaconsfield, Cranbourne and Officer joined by Pakenham on the women’s football landscape. The Lions will join Officer in division three, with the close neighbours set to kick off the season under lights in a Friday night showdown at Toomuc Reserve. Officer won three games in its first season last year and will be looking to provide the Lions with an equally tough initiation this time around. Pakenham has steadily built its list through the pre-season and will no doubt benefit from the coaching experience of Warren Cawcutt. The Lions have a few players that have played at a high level before but will concentrate their efforts on developing their players under Cawcutt’s leadership. Win, lose or draw, it’s great to have the Lions on board in 2018. Cranbourne had a taste for finals football in division one last year, finishing third before being knocked out by Seaford in the first semi-final. The Eagles won seven games last year but will need to improve to challenge reigning champions Eastern Devils and St Kilda Sharks for this year’s title. Cranbourne welcomes Beaconsfield to division one after Beacy came from the clouds to win the division-two premiership last year. The Beacy girls defeated Chirnside Park in the first-semi-final and Mornington in the prelim before proving too strong for Endeavour Hills in an epic battle at Casey Fields. Teams from the Mornington Peninsula Nepean Football League (MPNFL) will also play a big role in this year’s competition. Seaford will field teams in all three divisions while Mornington and Edi-Asp will have two teams competing this season. Tyabb will compete in division two, with Frankston, Hastings, Karingal, Pearcedale and Red Hill taking on the challenge of an 11-team division three. The three premiers from last season all have tough starts in round one with division-one premier Eastern Devils hosting Port Melbourne, division-two champions Beaconsfield earning promotion and a trip to Chirnside Park, while Tyabb host EdiAsp in its first home game since taking out the division-three – Development League - title.

Netball Preview The big guns are ready to fire By David Nagel The two best performed teams in the South East Football Netball League will go head-to-head in a battle for top place when Tooradin-Dalmore and Beaconsfield collide at the Tooradin Rec Reserve. The clash between two of the perennial powerhouses of the league is the standout match up in a round that promises to deliver some close and exciting finishes. ROC and Narre Warren will look for their third wins of the season at Starling Road, while Pakenham and Berwick will be desperate to gain their first victory of the season at Toomuc Reserve. But it’s the battle between the Seagulls and Eagles that holds most interest this weekend. Tooradin has continued its dominant form from last season, with wins over Pakenham, ROC and Cranbourne giving every indication that the Seagulls are at the peak of the powers right now. The Anzac Day win over Cranbourne was most impressive with the Seagulls leading 26-17 at half time before steamrolling Cranny with a 13 to 4 third quarter. Some familiar names were in commanding form for the Gulls, with Emma Iacovou, Jess Cox, Sara Duncan and Tara Smith proving too hot to handle through the midcourt. Ebony Dolan and Bec Kinna formed a strong defensive unit while Alex Duff and Alex Maher were cool and calm with their finishing. Beaconsfield was forced to dig a little bit deeper against Narre Warren, leading by just four goals at three-quarter time. But the skill and precision of players like Kaela Hughes, Rylee Nelson and Zoe Mason saw the Eagles surge ahead to a 42-34 victory. The battle through the midcourt will be fascinating to watch with Hughes, Nelson and Mason evenly matched with Iacovou Cox and Duncan. If that battle is even it will all come down to who can do damage at either end of the court. Duff and Maher have been cool under pressure in the past and will lead the Seagulls to a three-goal win. Narre Warren will return to the scene of the biggest triumphs in its history when it travels to Starling Road to take on ROC. The Magpies secured their only two A Grade premierships at the venue, winning the ultimate prize in 2015 and ’16. But it’s a different looking team that takes to the court these days with a new breed looking to emulate the magnificent deeds of those teams gone by.

Zoe Mason will be one of the keys to the Beaconsfield midcourt against Tooradin-Dalmore.

Erin Clark and Chloe Phillips remain from those glory days, while Kealeigh Brown, Caitlin Egan, Jemma Osborne and Caitlin Stephens would love nothing better to add their names to that illustrious honour roll. But the Magpies have some work to do. They played some brilliant netball against Beaconsfield last week but lost the game with a slow start and finish. If they play four quarters against the Kangaroos they should be too strong. But ROC won’t give this one up without a fight. The two Sarah’s – Castricum and Villiers – have been shooting well of late while Jamilah Ferns, Mel Overdyk and Laura Quinn have provided plenty of depth in defence. And Zoe Callanan, Georgie Douglas, Olivia Hamilton and Sam Neil are covering a stack of ground through the middle of the court. This one could go down to the wire – but we’ll tip the Magpies by five goals.

Netball Preview And, after close losses last round, Pakenham and Berwick will be keen to bank their first four points of the season at Toomuc Reserve. The Lions played a great game against ROC on Anzac Day, coming from four goals down at half time to draw to within one at the final break. The Kangaroos steadied and won, but Karen Meredith can take some real positives away from the match. Taylor Dykstra (GA) is starting to gel in her combination with Lauren Spinks and Kyra Esler, while Emma Jones and Bec Langford are getting better with every outing in the midcourt. But they’ll need to be on their game this week because the Wickers are also on the improve. The Wickers had the game in their keeping against Doveton last week, leading 39-32 at three-quarter time before losing by one in the dying stages. Morgan Thomas, Finlay McMillan and Renee Gill through everything at Doveton in the last quarter – but they just couldn’t quite hold on. This one is going to be close – almost too close to call – but it’s the Lions to win by one. Cranbourne and Doveton will sit this week out after playing their round four game on Good Friday.

Well done girls. Berwick and Doveton players keep their eyes on the ball at Edwin Flack Reserve.

Thanks to Beaconsfield for turning on the beautiful weather for the Anzac round. U13 White: Beaconsfield 23 Def Narre 16 U13 Red: Beaconsfield 20 Def Narre 18 Close game today against Beaconsfield. Defenders really lifted and took on the challenge and were competitive the whole game. Shanae was a stand out. Overall everyone did a great job. U15 White: Beaconsfield 34 def Narre 22 Great effort by the girls they all tried very hard, unfortunately they didn’t come away the win. Best on court - Mackenzie, Nat and Olivia U15 Red: Beaconsfield 27 def Narre 22 U17 White: Beaconsfield 25 def Narre 24 Another very close game played in perfect conditions. Ruby D and Amy smashed it in defence and Jaimee ran her heart out in the mid court. We lost be one in the end - but a hard fought out game by all! U17 Red: Beaconsfield 30 def Narre 26 With a 1 goal lead in the first quarter and scores level at half time, a very determined Beaconsfield came at us wholeheartedly and won by 4. Lots of rotations and different combinations were tried. Credit to the girls, who never gave up. A great team game. D Grade: Beaconsfield 46 def Narre 23 Anzac Day weather was kinder to us today compared to Round 2. With great conditions it was a tough game for D grade. There are points to work on but with a great bunch of girls will see us definitely improving. Thanks to Taylah for stepping up and filling in today. BOC: Mikayla Delves and Teagan Stuart C Grade: Narre 31 def Beaconsfield 22 In warm conditions the girls played 4 solid quarters of netball. We were expecting a competitive game of netball and we weren’t disappointed. Accurate shooting and drive through the midcourt made for a quick game. It was a great team effort. Awards: Zoe, Taylah H, Taylah S, Jess and Suzie B Grade: Narre 47 def Beaconsfield 46 From belting rain last week to sun and heat this week. This game was the grand final replay of 2017. Both teams were determined to get the win. A fantastic defensive game played by both teams, and our goalers stood up beautifully. Narre Warren lead by 1 at the final siren. A great competitive game. Well done to both teams. A Grade: Beaconsfield 42 def Narre 34 A high-pressure and physical game right from the first centre pass. After a slow start we steadied and contained Beacy. Unfortunately, we were unable to make the most of the opportunities we had and went down by 8. A lot of positives to be taken from this game. Tooradin-Dalmore What a great day it was when we hosted Cranbourne on Anzac Day for our first home game for the 2018 season! A huge crowd turned out on a glorious Autumn day to join in our Anzac Day commemorations and enjoy a great day of netball and football. Thanks to all those from both clubs and the RSL involved in putting on this day, particularly Barry Purcell, with lots of work going on behind the scenes to ensure a successful event and a fitting tribute to all those who have served for our country. In a great result for the netball club, our senior teams came away with four wins for the day, with A, B and D-Grade remaining unbeaten so far for the season. C-Grade secured a narrow one-goal win in a tight hit out with Cranbourne, turning the result their way this week after going down by a goal to ROC the week before. Congratulations to A-Grade’s Alex Maher who was awarded the Spirit of Anzac Medal on the day and took out the BOC nod following a strong game in goals, as well as Emma Iacovou who dominated through the mid-court taking out both the MVP and coaches award. Unfortunately, none our junior teams secured wins on the day, but they gave it their all against some very strong opponents. We’re confident our young Gulls will start to see results as they build and grow as teams as the season progresses. This week we welcome Beaconsfield for what is sure to be a testing task across all grades and we look forward to some great clashes. In an exciting day for the club, we’ll also be holding our 2017 Premiership Flag Raising before the A-Grade game at about 2.20pm. It was such a thrill and long time coming for Tooradin to take out the premiership glory last year and we’re excited to celebrate that momentous occasion on Saturday! We’d love as many sponsors, past players, current players and supporters as possible to join us for the flag raising and afternoon tea, so make sure you head over to the courts by the end of the B-Grade game. With Tooradin and Beaconsfield currently sitting at the top of the ladder, it’s shaping up to be a blockbuster game to follow.

Netball Notes Pakenham

As we approach Round 4 at home and welcome Berwick there are many things to celebrate in our current season. Congratulations to our D Grade team on their first win of the season against ROC, it is exciting to have five out of our six juniors in the top 5 and to see the consistent effort and improvement each week in their training and on game days! Keep up the great work players we are incredibly proud of each and every one of you! To our Senior teams who continue to show their true potential they have each week, we are confident and believe in you all and know the wins will come, keep focussed with your high work ethic, teamwork and intensity rates, believe in yourselves and the success will come! At Pakenham we have always been blessed with incredible volunteers who readily put up their hand to provide their valuable and precious time and effort for our mighty club. This week we acknowledge and recognise Penny Carney for her outstanding action shots of all our athletes doing what they love and capturing them all so beautifully and show casing the remarkable talent we have. Heartfelt thanks Penny; you have provided memories for not only our club, but for all our players and their families. While committees as volunteers try and remain focussed with the job in hand for the last SEFNL 2018 season, we all find ourselves in the same predicament of finding a future home for 2019 and beyond with our football clubs. We should be extremely proud of the SEFNL netball

competition which has been built over the years into the very robust competition we know today. No other footy/ netball competition has our model which allows for greater participation in a competitive competition in having six junior teams and four senior teams. What a shame we now need to break this down. But we will start again, with the same passion, enthusiasm and dedication that we all put into building SEFNL netball to what it is today. To all our valued players/families/members/sponsors/supporters as a committee we wish to reassure everyone involved with the Pakenham Lions netball family, the committee are working diligently to ensure the future and the outcome of what all started with this AFL South East review in the seeking of divisional football is a positive one and that the future of a robust competitive junior and senior netball competition residing in partnership with the football continues for the future!

Netball Notes Beaconsfield

A GRADE - This week was at home in opposite conditions to the rain of Round 2.Lining up against a strong Narre side, the girls took to the courts for a hot afternoon of netball.Narre were competitive around the ball, forcing our midcourt to work non-stop,on top of their intense & smart attack end–which forced our defenders to work tirelessly to turn the ball over.Playing without midcourter Ash & attack end Bianca, the girls showed their fitness, determination & team work to secure the win.Dani was exceptional in goals, supported by shooter Tanya, who played an exciting game with wing Rylee feeding the ball in flawlessly.Abbie & Dani continued to be a perfect pair defending a tough goal circle, while Kaela & Zoe kept the team together, both had huge impact in linking the defence & attack ends Awards:Kaela,Tanya & Zoe B GRADE - ANZAC round provided lots of excitement. Taking on another unbeaten team in Narre, the game was a rematch of last year’s Grand Final.Establishing a slight lead after the 1st qtr,Beacy were providing the circle with great ball with Mia slotting away goal after goal.By halftime the teams were even again & a tenacious Narre pulled out to a 5goal lead at 3/4 time.Despite plenty of opportunity Beacy went down in a 1goal thriller. An exciting game played in great sportsmanship. Awards:Mia,Gabby & Tenielle C GRADE - Unfortunately the girls had their 1st loss for the season,an inconsistent 1st half cost us on the scoreboard, but to the girls credit they managed to turn the game around in the 2nd half.Wishing Em a speedy recovery from her ankle injury,we are going to miss having you on court. Awards:Zara,Dan & Paris D GRADE - Anzac Round this week saw us come up against our rivals in Narre. The 1st qtr was very even & greatly contested, but from then on,our girls stepped up a gear & didn’t look back, playing a brilliant defensive game & very balanced through the midcourt. Our goalers played a very structured team game & shot well. Our efforts today, with backing each other up & not dropping our heads or our intensity,it was played within the Anzac spirit.Well done ladies. Awards:Tianah,Shelley & Maddie K 15R - The 15s made the most of their opportunities. When someone was needed down the court,a player would pop into space & the ball flow was much smoother. The girls made it their responsibility to work certain space on the court & maintained this discipline throughout the game. The training focus this week was all about the best space to place the ball,& during the game accurate passing made a great difference for the goalers in particular. There have been many different elements added to the game in the last few weeks & they are taking on board everything suggested & improving each week Awards:Alix,Jemima & Ariah 15W - Round 3 provided us with a win against Narre. We definitely took our game to the level we need to be

36

playing at.From watching on the sidelines,it is amazing to see things we have been working on come together out on court.Proud of our efforts & performance Awards:Darcy,Alyssa & Lauren 13R - We started off strong this week settling in quickly. Our defensive pressure across the court was great creating turnovers to see us up at 1/2 time.Third qtr we made some basic errors & our connections weren’t as good, this saw a 7goal turnaround resulting in Narre up at 3/4 time.Fortunately the girls switched back on in the last with defensive pressure & connections down the court. Capitalising on every opportunity, their backing up of each other was great,& we came away with a win Awards:Charlotte & Sami 13W - The girls played a great team game this week against Narre. They linked the ball well down the court & everyone played their role beautifully. It is really exciting to see them starting to jell as a team and backing each other up.They implemented our work at training & came home with the win.Keep up the great work girls! Awards:Tahnee & Sienna

Berwick

The last game of Anzac split Round saw us Wickers take on the Doves at home. The weather was perfect and we were all ready to hit the courts. Both 13’s had a win with the whites really impressing their coach with their work rate on court. Implementing what they’ve been working on at training & didn’t stop until the final siren. It was a great team win, awesome effort girls. 13 Reds, went out and smashed it. With personal goals set as a team every 1⁄4 and they hit them strong. Taking training drills to the court today. You all showed respect and good sportsmanship, no matter what the scoreboard reflected. Coming away with a huge win 69-4, made your coaches very proud. Again both 15’s had wins today with Britt Pym stepping in to coach the 15 Reds and a last minute change with a player, the team responded well and pulled away with a brilliant win. All 8 girls on court worked hard and secured another great win. Thanks Britt and Grace. The 15 whites fought hard today to come away with a great win. The training work with holding strong body on body is developing nicely and the passing has improved immensely over the past 2 weeks. Well done Karla Abu-Jaber for holding body well & a great all round performance. 17 whites had a nail biter with it coming down to the final minutes. Extremely proud of these girls once again for never giving up & having that wickers fighting attitude in them from start to finish. Today they achieved some individual goals & worked through numerous rotations

Netball Notes to continue to build on the team game. Congratulations to Amy Davies on her first game of the season & a well deserved best on court. The 17 Reds continued to outclass the opposition again with some great turnovers by defence all the way to the goals. All players contributing to the win. This team is exciting to watch and we look forward to the remainder of the season to see what they bring. D Grade - If only the scoreboard reflected the competitive nature of the game. Great second quarter taking it to the reigning premiers 10-7, the girls can keep their heads held high for standing their own against such a physical side. C Grade: The atmosphere was great, the sun was shining and they came out firing. It didn’t show on the scoreboard but the whole team dynamic had such a drastic improvement and everything finally just ‘clicked’. Even though the win wasn’t our this week, the girls were still in such high spirits after the game because of the game they played. It’s so nice to see each of the girls come into their own and really start to gel together as a team. Special Mention to Tessa Woodward for an outstanding game in WA/C! Go Wickers! B Grade saw a new line up and it took a little to settle in but through patches during the game you could see some everyone’s confidence building. Consistency is key and patience in handling the ball. Next week will see even more improvement. A Grade’s improvement within two games is outstanding. This team is not far from securing the 4 points. Unfortunately the team lead all game but the Doves came back hard in the last quarter securing the win by 1 goal right on the final whistle. The team will take the learning away and build to the next game. A huge congrats to our A Grade veteran Renee Gill on her 100th game also. Round 4 we play away at Paky and look forward to the challenges ahead. We also wish to welcome our newest sponsor in THE MAIN – BERWICK who we are super proud to be affiliated with for the coming years.

MYSTERY WORDS CLUE: The top three teams on the SEFNL ladder in 2017.

The Dandenong Southern Stingrays’ winning start to the season ended abruptly as the Oakleigh Chargers stormed home in the dying minutes at Warrawee Park on Saturday winning 11.6 (72) to 9.12 (66). Oakleigh came into the game as slight underdogs, but with a couple of handy inclusions and a 3-1 record so far it was always set as the game of the round. Both sides had their share of possession with a massive arm-wrestle ensuing for most of the day. The Stingrays had a hot patch for 15 minutes in the first quarter, but the Chargers were able to peg back the margin over the next two quarters to take advantage of the Stingrays poor kicking at goal. The Stingray defence did perform admirably, with Lachlan Young having his best game this year and Matthew Gahan once again a stand-out. Excitement-machine Zac Foot also put in another solid performance, amassing plenty of contested and uncontested possessions, breaking the lines numerous times and kicking a couple of nice goals along the way. Corey Ellison put up his hand as one of the best contested forwards in the TAC this year, kicking two goals and taking a few big grabs in the process. Stingrays Talent Manager Mark Wheeler said the Chargers just did the little things better. “The Chargers definitely had more intent around the footy, adjusting to the tempo of the game, trying to get the players to work a bit harder around the contests and ending up better on the clearances,” Wheeler said. “It’s a tough competition. We just need to make sure the players we bring in each week adjust to the level, as well as educating them on the importance of kicking goals or at least defending it on the way out - instead of dropping our heads. “We had a purple patch in the middle of the game, but they were definitely better than us in the final quarter but, at the end of the day, we lost the game due to poor conversion inside 50. “We couldn’t maintain the scoreboard pressure like previous weeks, to have significantly more inside 50’s, and shots on goal, and to not even register a score is deflating.”

As the ball made its way back to the middle, with just under four minutes left on the clock, Oakleigh gained another goal through a controversial free kick- plus a 50-metre penalty - to hold on for a six-point victory when the final siren sounded. It will be a day the Stingrays players and staff will most likely highlight in the review on Tuesday as the one that got away. The Stingrays didn’t take their chances and relied on individual performances instead of the team play on display in the first four rounds. Dandenong will have a lot of work to do this week as they prepare to take on the Eastern Rangers at Shepley Oval in two weeks’ time. The game will be played on Saturday 12th May starting at 2.00pm. This week the TAC Cup has a bye.

Dandenong Stingrays 4.4 7.6 8.10 9.12.66 Oakleigh Charges 1.2 5.4 7.5 11.6.72 Stingrays Goals: Zac Foot 2, Corey Ellison 2, Edward Cahill, Reid Nanscawen, Jamie Plumridge, Lachlan McDonnell, Jarrod Smith. Best: Jake Frawley, Lachlan McDonnell, Zac Foot, Lachlan Young, Corey Ellison, Jake Carosella.

In the final quarter the Stingrays coaches watched helplessly as Oakleigh managed the first two goals as they took control of the game, plus the lead. A few positional changes, plus a lift in intensity, saw Reid Nanscawen as the possible hero for the day after being taken high, receiving a free kick 35 minutes out to kick truly and swing the lead back to the Stingrays by six points. But the Chargers weren’t done, they once again kicked their own goal on the counter attack to lock up the scores at the 20-minute mark. The final minutes come down to who wanted it more, with both sides loading their guns into the middle.
