AFL South East Stage is set for interleague showdown Excitement is building for the WorkSafe AFL Victoria Community Championships clash between the South East Football Netball League (SEFNL) and AFL Yarra Ranges at Holm Park Reserve. Not only is a wonderful day of community football and netball on the cards – with junior and senior games in both sports - but a quality VFL clash between Richmond and Sandringham will follow. Working with the Cardinia Shire Council, the Richmond Football Club and Aligned Leisure, AFLSE is delighted to be sharing one of the biggest days on the calendar with its partners. “The WorkSafe AFL Victoria Community Championships are the pinnacle of local football and we’re thrilled to be participating in what is sure to be a wonderful day of football and netball,“ said AFL South East Region General Manager John Anderson. “It’s a great initiative taken by all parties and we look forward to some tough battles against AFL Yarra Ranges before enjoying the clash between Richmond and Sandringham. We encourage the local community to get along and support the day.”

Under-19 football will kickstart the day’s activities at 9am, followed by the 17-Under netball at 9.30am, before the senior football and netball competitions both begin at 10.50am. The VFL clash between Richmond and Sandringham will begin at 2.10pm. Cardinia Shire Mayor Cr Collin Ross said he was excited to be welcoming the Richmond Football Club’s VFL team back to the Cardinia Shire in 2018. “Both Council and our community really enjoy having Richmond Football Club play on one of our own local reserves. Combining the first VFL match this year with the interleague matches is even better as people attending can make a real day of it. “Hosting these matches in Cardinia Shire provides another fantastic, affordable way for our local residents to get involved in sport and community, as well as getting a chance to support the players in person,” Cr Ross said. Richmond CEO Brendon Gale said: “We are pleased to be taking our VFL program to the Cardinia Shire in 2018. “This initiative allows Richmond members and football fans the chance to see first-hand the club’s young and rising talent, as well as our more experienced and VFLlisted players. “The club is very proud of its partnership with Cardinia Shire Council. We have been working side-by-side for over seven years to deliver programs, events and initiatives and connect people through sport. “Entry is free for all 2018 Richmond members so we encourage our strong and loyal fan base in the southeast corridor to get along and show their support.” Free children’s activities and the Richmond Football Club merchandise and membership stands will be available throughout the day. Entry at the gate: • • •

AFL Vic Country 2018 AFL Victoria beyondblue Round
TAC Cup and community football.”
Thousands of Victorian footballers will shine a light on mental health this weekend when they play in a new state-wide AFL Victoria beyondblue Round on May 12 and 13. Male and female players from all levels of football across the state – from junior leagues to the Peter Jackson VFL – will wear blue tape around their wrists to get people talking about mental health. The dedicated Round is the first event AFL Victoria will run as part of a new community partnership with beyondblue. It follows the annual beyondblue Cup which saw Hawthorn and Sydney face off in Round 8 of the AFL at the MCG on Friday night. Players from AFL Victoria’s 6000-plus teams nominated beyondblue as a charity they most wanted to support as mental health was of high importance. AFL Victoria CEO Steven Reaper said he is looking forward to the Victorian football community supporting the work of beyondblue this weekend.
Join in the conversation online throughout the dedicated Round by tagging in @aflvic and @beyondblue or via the official hashtags #beyondblueround2018 and #gamechanger. The beyondblue Support Service is available by phone 24/7 on 1300 224 636 or online chat www.beyondblue. org.au/get-support (3pm – 12am AEST) or email responses. AFL South East - Club Support Programs AFLSE would also like to thank the Melbourne Racing Club Foundation for the continued funding of the Club Support Program. The Club Support Program was rolled out in 2016 with all 22 MPNFL clubs receiving access to the Sports Chaplaincy Australia Club Care Access and SALT Education program. In addition to the Club Access program, the 2018 program will see the delivery of Mental Health and WellBeing sessions being offered to all clubs.
“AFL Victoria is proud to partner with beyondblue in 2018 to start conversations, reduce stigma and increase support-seeking for anxiety, depression and suicide prevention within the football community,” Reaper said. “Last year AFL Victoria consulted with our clubs and identified that mental health was one of the leading priorities for both players and supporters. In partnership with beyondblue, AFL Victoria is working towards educating the football community on mental health and wellbeing. “Our regions and leagues do a fantastic job supporting players, teams and clubs who may be facing their own issues. “There is a much greater opportunity for social impact and change with a coordinated approach across the football community, and we look forward to beyondblue being supported at all levels this weekend – AFL, VFL,

Footy Preview How will they bounce back? By David Nagel “Success is not final, failure is not fatal, it is the courage to continue that counts.” Quotes from Winston Churchill don’t regularly appear in the pages of a footy record, but they seem pretty appropriate this week as Officer and Tooradin look to dig deep and respond to losses that can unsettle a footy club. Losing by 100 points is one thing, but doing it when you go into battle with high hopes of success – that’s a different kettle of fish altogether. Let’s start with Officer, who make the short trip to Holm Park Reserve to take on Beaconsfield today. The Kangaroos were confident heading into last week’s clash of the undefeated against Narre Warren, and started accordingly in one of the most attractive quarters of football we have seen all season. The ball pinged from one end of Starling Road to the other with the Kangaroos kicking 5.3 to 5.2 to take a one-point lead to the first break. Jayce Valentine and Matty Clarke were dangerous up forward with a couple each, while Ben Tivendale was doing a marvellous job on Nick Scanlon and Harris Wasslkyo playing a similar role on Michael Collins. Even Coach Doug Koop was impressed at quarter time. “It all comes down to pressure, when you started to apply pressure they didn’t like it did they,” Koop began, before his words became quite prophetic. ”The big question now is can you maintain that pressure. They are a very good team who use the ball well, if you give them an inch of space they will cut you to ribbons.” And then bang, just like that it happened. The Magpies unleashed a six-goal burst – in just 10 minutes – to end the game as a contest and rattle the Kangaroos to the core. They led by 42 points at half time and extended to 64 at the final break. With the game over surely the Kangaroos would dig deep to save face, narrowing the gap in the final quarter as the Magpies intensity would subside.
Jake O’Donnell will need to lead the charge if the Seagulls are to get close to Berwick. But no, they became spectators once again as the Magpies rollicked their way to an 11.7 to 1.1 final term – having 18 scoring shots to two – to run out 130-point winners. It was poor from the Kangaroos. But, as Mr Churchill said, failure is not fatal, it is the courage to continue that counts. So just how will the Kangaroos bounce back? Players like Ben Tivendale, Tyler Clark and Blair Allan can take small comfort from the fact that the Eagles have also fallen short of the Magpies this year. Sure the 72-point defeat in round three was not quite as devastating as the Kangaroos, but it did show that both of these sides have a fair way to go to match it with the very best. Beaconsfield was rattled by the Magpies as well, but reset and produced its best performance of the year against Tooradin last week. Coach Leigh McQuillen was extremely disappointed with his sides work ethic against the Magpies, particularly the ability to run both ways, and worked almost exclusively on that facet of the game in the build-up. “That’s basically all we’ve worked on for two weeks,” was McQuillen’s simple explanation on the day before the clash.

7
Footy Preview And narrowing the focus worked, with the 100-point win eerily similar to Narre Warren’s, overcoming a brave opponent in the first quarter before putting the foot to the throat after quarter time. Nathan Langley was the star, finally living up to his star billing with a 12-goal haul that wreaked of class. The former Cora Lynn sharp-shooter had a tough initiation to SEFNL footy, but has upcoming games against the Kangaroos, Pakenham and Doveton to rectify that situation in a hurry. James Munro was also outstanding with seven goals, while the great Scotty Meyer kicked three to continue his run of fine form. This one is a crunch game for both sides, with the Kangaroos hopping two games clear of the Eagles if they can recapture their form from the early rounds. But our tip is the teams will be locked after round five – the eagles running out 23-point winners. Berwick host Tooradin-Dalmore at Edwin Flack Reserve in a game that has two very different destinations to choose from. Will Berwick, led by the class of Ash Smith, Michael Riseley and Madi Andrews, stamp on the Seagulls early, or will the expected wet conditions even this one up and bring it all back down to desire? And if it does come down to desire…the Seagulls should have that precious commodity in abundance today. No team likes to suffer 100-point defeats, and players that have been around the club for a while like Michael Hobbs, Jake O’Donnell, Adam Galea and Julian Suarez should take last week’s effort against Beaconsfield as a real slap in the face. They need to respond, they need to lead by example and throw everything they’ve got at the Wickers, who are still to play their best footy. But when Luke Sheppard and Will Arthurson are running, and Riley Heddles and Riseley are controlling things down back, the Wickers are still a very formidable outfit. Given the conditions, it might not be pretty – but it will be pretty enough to give the Wickers a 39-point victory. He’s back! Cranbourne will welcome the return of superstar full forward Marc Holt when it rolls out the red carpet for Pakenham at Casey Fields. Holt hasn’t played since receiving a four-match ban in last year’s preliminary final against Narre Warren. The champ returns to a side that has a two-two record, and still a lot to prove with victories over Doveton and Tooradin to be highly expected. Losses to Narre Warren and Beaconsfield have squared the ledger, leaving the Eagles as an unknown quantity this year. Minus Max Gearon and Mat Fletcher they have a very different look through the midfield, leaving Shaun Marusic and Ryan Davey as the remaining members of the FabFour.
8
Beaconsfield’s Jake Bowd is one of the most exciting talents in SEFNL. Ryan Jones and Luke Bee-Hugo still loom large, while exciting talents like Nathan Gardiner and Clay McCartney are going to provide plenty of headaches this year. Pakenham was expected to struggle badly, but Ash Green has bonded a tight unit that may not have the class of some opponents, but certainly the hunger to compete. Jimmy Harrison and JJ Peni have added an element of class, complementing hard-working types like Jake Barclay, Jack Kowarzik and Jackson Hillard. The Lions could really cause a bit of a surprise here, coming off a tough game against Berwick they face a Cranbourne unit that hasn’t faced the starter since Anzac Day. The Eagles could bit a little bit rusty. But class will prevail – as it often does – Holt will kick five and lead the Eagles to a 28-point victory. And Narre Warren returns to its spiritual home at Kalora Park for the first time this year when it welcomes Doveton to Fox Road. The Magpies are playing magnificent footy this year with Trent Cody, Brad Scalzo, Michael Collins and Dylan Quirk having terrific seasons through the midfield, while Aaron Wilson and Stewie Scanlon are providing consistent efforts up forward.
www.aflsoutheast.com.au
Footy Preview Throw in still fresh faces like Tom Miller, Jack Toner, Jesse Davies and Cory Machaya and the Magpies look to be a very well-rounded and balanced unit right now. Coach Matt Shinners has done a wonderful job to change the game style, with the Magpies playing a far betterbrand of footy than last year. The Doves are struggling right now, and need to come with the same intent that brought to Fox Road last year. Undermanned, the Doves pushed the Magpies for three quarters before class shone through in the end, the Magpies turning a seven-point deficit into a 45-point victory with a devastating 10-goal final term. The experience of Matthew Boyd will help the Doves, as will the expected ruck dominance of Russ Gabriel, who will be fit and refreshed after a two-week spell. But the Magpies have too many tricks right now – we’re looking at 10-goals plus!

Footy Notes Pakenham The Pakenham Football Club hosted the first ever game for their women’s team on Friday night. The excitement infected both players and spectators alike and while our girls didn’t get the scores on the board, they kept their heads up and went hard at the ball all game. With only 17 on the ground after injury, they fought it out against Officer’s full, experienced team, even winning the third quarter. It was great to have an enthusiastic crowd cheering the girls on. The club is fortunate to have a great bunch of women joining us thanks to this team. They do it again this Friday night so let’s get an even bigger crowd for them. A huge thank you must go out to Nic Muley and Amanda Sidebottom who have worked tirelessly to ensure the team has been able to play. The reserves team against Berwick and it was always going to be a big ask to get over them. We put in a new game plan to combat Berwick and for the first 3 quarters we were with them. We played hard aggressive football and played to our planning, we were within striking distance at 3 quarter time being only 17 points down. Unfortunately, it all fell apart in the last quarter, the boys went away from our planning and started playing individual football, Berwick took full advantage and kicked 3 goals, 11 points to no score to win easily. With losses all around this week the Club is heartened by the effort and commitment by all of the players. This kind of spirit can only lead to future successes. New merchandise has arrived this week, come and check it out and stock up on all of your supporter gear. Game Face joined us at Thursday night dinner this week and put on a great show, interviewing players from all teams and live streaming the show on Facebook. A fun night was had by all and we look forward to the next time.
Officer Last weekend was a tough one for the club with all or our senior men’s teams being beaten convincingly by an outstanding Narre Warren outfit. Whilst there is not much that can be taken from last weekend, fortunately a week is a long time in football and we have the opportunity to put a poor performance behind us this weekend when we face Beaconsfield. On more of a positive note, our women’s side played there first game for the season on Friday night against Pakenham coming home with an excellent win. The women’s side has a new look this year with most of the players in there first year at the club. It was great to see them earn a hard fought win after many, many months of pre season training.
Last Saturday was the clubs first social function of the year. The Australian Cocktail night had a huge attendance and was an excellent night. A big shout out to the clubs social committee for a fantastic night. Finally, on a more somber note, last weekend one of our players was hurt in the reserves breaking his leg. The club is happy to report that Hayden Allen had his leg operated on Saturday night and the surgery appears to have gone well. Hayden will be out of action for the rest of the year, but we wish him a speedy recovery. Good luck to all our team this weekend Go Roos!!! #RespectAllFearNone e) rocfc@icloud.com f) https://www.facebook.com/OfficerSeniorFC/ w) http://officerseniorfc.com.au/ In) https://www.instagram.com/roc_osfc/
Berwick Our first away game last week saw us head down the Highway to Pakenham. The under 19s started off the day against a much improved Pakenham outfit. Whilst we were in front for most of the day Pakky leveled the scores at the start of the last 1/4. Not ideal when we were kicking into a 3 goal wind. The boys though dug deep and got up for a controversal victory. The seconds also recorded a victory albeit with the yips in front of goal. Was like my putting. 25 behinds from 33 shots was not ideal and Im sure Leroy will have them kicking goals during the week. The seniors also recorded a comfortable win though did not really break the game open until late in the 3rd quarter it was a tough encounter and most importantly we came away with the points and no injuries Also a big thank you to Josh Tabak and the coterie team for the exceptional work they have done with the room upgrade. New coaches room, office, merchandise room, disabled toilets and a top class coterie function room. If you are at the footy today get up and have a look.... amazing result in 2 weeks (and buy a coterie membership) And a big welcome to all the ladies here for our Pink Ribbon Ladies day. Not sure how but they got first use of the Coterie Room though!!!!. This is a must attend social function on everyone’s calendar designed to get ladies back to country football, Great work Vic and Tania again. I am sure the room will look Brilliant. CASINO NIGHT: MAY 26TH (Need to pre purchase tix)

Footy Notes Beaconsfield
Narre Warren
After some great results last week vs Tooradin the boys took it 3 from 3 for the day which was great followed by a great win by our senior women’s The under 19s started the day in a hurry setting the result for the day with a very convincing win Our reserves faced up to Tooradin and a very good game of footy was put on , the boys were yet to put 4 points on the board so the would have to work hard and follow the plan all day. To the credit of the team and well lead by Ben McGowan who fought hard all day and maintained the standard the boys came away with their first win for new coach Mitch Welsh and Brett Scott The seniors started off slow allowing Tooradin to get on top early however then ignited and set the standard for the day with some very good individual performances but none bigger than a great team result Our senior women started their campaign in round 1 in the division 1 competition and showed they will be a reliable team yet again winning round 1 by 48 points against Chirnside park This week we welcome all teams to Holm park where we have all 4 senior teams playing, the senior women’s close the day off with a twilight game against our rivals Mornington Our seniors will no doubt be up and about and today we acknowledge that this is pink ribbon round where all of our players will wear pink socks for the round as acknowledgement of our support Today we have our annual ladies day luncheon which will see just over 100 ladies enjoy the great afternoon where the will present a pair of pick socks to the players however the key inspiration will come from Ciara Nelson who is a guest speaker at todays event , Ciara is an absolute inspiration as her family and as a club and community we are proud to support such great causes. All of the proceeds from todays event will go to Cancer research and we would like to also acknowledge and thank the sponsors that support today Khans Hospitality - Brad Battin - Beaconsfield Sporting Club. Thank you
Today we welcome our old foe Doveton to Fox Road, as we are finally at a stage where we can host our first home games for the 2018 season. Construction of our new social facilities is not quite finished and we may have to do without full bar and canteen services etc. today - but now we can see the light at the end of the tunnel, the small inconveniences will be well and truly worth it. Off the field 2018 has obviously been less than ideal at times – training at different venues, a string of away games to start the season off, and having no place to host our social activities that clubs depend on for early season cash flow and to build club spirit and camaraderie. But through all that we have just ‘got on with it’. That’s what makes Narre FNC such a special place. With both Seniors and Reserves (football) and C Grade (netball) undefeated after 4 rounds, and our other teams all playing well ... to our players, we applaud your club spirit and amazing resilience. To our loyal members and supporters, we thank you for your patience and understanding. To our fantastic Committee, we are indebted for your hard work as always. And to our many sponsors who have contributed in cash and in-kind to our new social club development, we will be sure your various contributions are duly recognised and never forgotten by our Club when the job is finally done. With 3 full weeks until our next scheduled home game – the return bout against Berwick on 2 June -we can be optimistic our impressive new venue will be in full swing by then. Last week Narre’s footy teams claimed the clean sweep at Officer with big wins in all three grades. Our Seniors and Reserves wore black armbands to honour Luke Baker – a loyal Narre supporter and good mate to many players who died tragically recently, aged just 26. Rest in Peace mate. In the Ones, Officer led at the first change after pouring on the pressure and forcing Narre to miss targets and turn the ball over through the middle of the ground. But we slipped it up a gear with an eight-goal second term; and finished off with an 11 goal last quarter for a solid win. The Twos welcomed Ryan Marriott for his first run back at Narre for several years, and our win featured 10 individual goalkickers. Borno kicked four, ‘Big dog’ Papworth and Mitch Cowan three each. Chris ‘Coldplay’ Martin was in our best. Our Under 19s got back on the winning list – dominating from the jump and only letting Officer in for a solitary goal in the 3rd quarter. Big Maxie Sheppard was fantastic clunking several big pack marks and kicking 5 from centre half forward. Feature Sponsor – Fantastic to have Total Tools Fountain Gate on board again as a major sponsor, located at the Lifestyle Centre, Princes Hwy Narre Warren, Ph: 87654555; email fountaingate@totaltools.com.au

Footy Notes Tooradin-Dalmore Playing for the second time on the new surface at Tooradin last week turned out to be a major challenge, we had a massive down pour of rain on the Friday and the drainage is obviously not working left the ground in a very ordinary condition that’s for sure, no excuse though we just weren’t good enough, Beaconsfield was way to good on the day, we got off to great start but unfortunately just couldn’t go on with it, our reserves nearly got the job done though, had all the players turned up like they should have we could of won that, feel bad for the coach Craig, puts in major effort and 10 boys just don’t turn up? Disappointing lads. Under 19s still have some work to do though, clearly there’s a great divide between the top teams and the lower teams, we’ll done to Beacy though they have some great boys down there, carn’t take that away from them. Another challenge this week, Berwick at Berwick, doesn’t get any bigger, good luck boys. GO GULLS.
Cranbourne Sure does feel like we’re starting again given the 17 day break between Tooradin on ANZAC Day and Pakenham today at home. In saying this, we were more than happy to play on Good Friday and ANZAC Day so we’re not arguing! It is always an honour playing on ANZAC Day against Tooradin and this year was no exception. The Gods again put on a glorious day and the TDFNC put on another wonderful tribute fitting for such an important day. Well done to all involved; you again showed you are the local leaders of this important occasion. On field and while we come away with three wins, it wasn’t all our own way. The 19s kicked off the day playing a Tooradin side undermanned but doing a great job fielding a team. We came away with a 123-point win although it could’ve been a lot more had the 16.28 we kicked been 28.16. But it wasn’t and that was that. Kicking 2.10 in the first quarter isn’t ideal but at least we were getting the ball. Best for us were Luca, Mitch, Owen, Murph, Jelo and Jordan Morris. Let’s focus for a big game against Pakky today. The twos got over the line by the skin of their teeth as Tooradin threw everything at us. In a low scoring physical contest, the lead teetered all day until the last quarter where we kept them goalless to record a 7-point win. Best for us were Lewi, N. Russo, Keeno, Archie and Aidey. The seniors haven’t been beaten on ANZAC Day by Tooradin and there was talk that this may be the day where the trophy stays down the road at Westernport Oval. After an even first quarter we slipped away to lead by 27 points at the main break, only for Tooradin to rally and reduced the deficit to 15 points and go in to the last break with confidence.

Once upon a time the third quarter was seen as the Premiership quarter but it appears our last quarter is the best of each game. This is a lot to do with not just our fitness levels but concentration levels as well. Our seven goal to zero last quarter is definitely testimony to that as we came away with a comfortable win in the end by 56 points. Our best were Vel (ANZAC Day medallist), Micky B, Gards, Cheekas, Cav and Clay. As mentioned earlier, this week we welcome Pakenham FNC and look forward to a great day of footy and netball. Events Today we have the High Tea event from 3pm in the social rooms, raising money for cancer treatments and sufferers. If you weren’t thinking of coming, and decide you want to on the day, look for Jan Davies and tell her you want in! $20/head includes a free glass of champers on arrival as well finger food. All profits go to charity. Tonight, the Plus 1 Party kicks off at 7:30pm at the rooms. Don’t be shy, bring a friend and dance the night away to DJ Branners. $5 entry includes a jelly shot on entry. Our finest function of the year the $5k Draw takes place the day after we play Doveton on Queens Birthday weekend. Tickets are available through Jan Davies for $65/ head which includes draw entry, ½ price drinks all night, food and entertainment as well as spot prizes throughout the night. Go Eagles!!
Doveton
It’s great to be back in the thick of the action today after playing just one game since April 14. It’s funny how the draw has worked this year with our week-on, week-off routine conitinuing next Saturday with the SEFNL Interleague game against Yarra Ranges. We then get stuck into six consecutive weeks of football which will be fantastic for the whole footy club. Our last game against Berwick proved to be a tough day at the office although we did show some promising signs in the second quarter in particular. Gach was sensational in the ruck while Will Smith, Sam Muirhead and Matty Boyd stuck to their guns against quality opposition. This week we face an old foe in Narre Warren who are playing some great footy at the minute. We gave the Magpies a red-hot contest in this same game last year and there’s no excuse to not bring that same level of passion and spirit to the table this time around. Thanks to all the volunteers at the club who, after a couple of weeks off here and there, will get busier and busier over the next two months of footy. Go Doves!

Tributes flow for Mr MPNFL By David Nagel The great E.J. Whitten will forever be ‘Mr Football’, but local media broadcaster and journalist Andrew ‘Toe Punt’ Kelly has surely earned the moniker of ‘Mr MPNFL’. Kelly’s short fight with aggressive cancer came to and end at 9am on Saturday 5 May, leaving his family, friends and a saddened football world to reflect on a man with an unrivalled passion for the game. Tributes flowed in for ‘Toey’, who kept the punters entertained and the administrators of local football as honest as the day is long. He made his name as a journalist, reporting for the Pakenham Gazette at one stage, and also as a football commentator with The Voice of the Peninsula - radio station 3RPP. Station Manager Brendan Telfer remembers a man who gave everything he had to the local football community. “It’s tragic and defies logic that a man that was so dedicated and engaged in local football could be cut down when there were so many things that he wanted to achieve,” Telfer said. “Toey’s dream was to elevate the standard of our coverage across all of our multi-media platforms to make 2018 an extraordinary year. He began that journey with us and we’re all determined to make sure we finish his dream and his legacy lives on forever and a day.” Telfer said Kelly’s standing in local football could never be questioned.
“He was football on the Mornington Peninsula and after 31 years he was still coming up with ways to improve the football coverage right across the breadth and depth of the peninsula,” Telfer said. “His dedication over such a long journey was awe inspiring to those who worked with him, and his is a life that is a true celebration of what community football is all about. “He had a spirit about him, a tenacious man who was always in pursuit of the truth. He inspired us with his work ethic and we will do everything within our powers to keep his legacy going for a very long time to come.” Telfer said Kelly didn’t suffer no fools. “He said it as he saw it, and there were many views contrary to his, but each topic was dealt with and no one was left in any doubt as to where he stood on those issues,” he said. “His honesty was one of his greatest traits.” Tributes flowed for Kelly on Social Media Thank you from the bottom of our hearts to everyone who messaged Toe Punt to support, encourage and send best wishes over the course of his battle with cancer. We are grateful he was able to see how loved and admired he was in the football community. He sadly lost the fight this morning at 9am. He fought hard and was dignified to the end and will forever be in our hearts. The Kelly family

Andrew ‘Toe Punt’ Kelly Unbelievable news. A great bloke who loved everything and everybody involved in local footy. Always called it as he saw it and a huge supporter of the MPNFL. RIP. Steven Pallas Remember being in the 3RPP studio alone one day when my co-host dropped out last minute. I was struggling big time talking to myself, it was a train wreck. Toey heard and raced to the studio to lend a hand, never been happier to see a mate. Kind of bloke he was. Vale Toey Laurence Patrick So bloody sad...didn’t always agree on things but at the end we always had a laugh ...... R.I.P. “The Voice of Peninsula Football.” Brett Chard A great man and an even better friend. An unbelievably sad time. Thank you for everything mate. Condolences to your wonderful family. Brent Clinnick
From everyone at the Langwarrin Cricket Club we are heartbroken at the passing of our former President, Premiership Player and most of all a great mate. Andrew (Toe Punt ) Kelly. You will forever be remembered within the walls of Lloyd Park. He was a man never scared to speak his mind but then had the strength and character to put words into actions. He took over as club President in the 09/10 season when off field the club was in trouble and over the next three seasons as leader of our club was instrumental in giving a vision and a direction that has led the club into being a powerhouse on and off the field that we hope is the epitome of the MPCA. Kel, you were a true legend of our club and your legacy and infectious grin will be treasured forever. To Katy, Lachy and Breanna and the whole Kelly family we are all here for you if there’s anything we can do and as I’m sure you know already your husband, father, son and brother was loved by so many. Gary Rees
Very sad. We had our disagreements but I am glad we cleared the air last year. A true local footy legend who drove football on the peninsula like no one else. Thoughts are with his family. Troy Schwarze RIP Toey. Condolences to family. Peninsula footy has lost a great man. You have the best seat in the house now mate. Joey Lane Sorry to hear the news. Will be greatly missed by the whole MPNFL football community. Rest In Peace Toey. Ashley Eames It was only two years ago that Toey reported on my dear nephew who passed through cancer quickly ,and now this. Get yourselves checked guys these are legends of our game. Cancer doesn’t care. That small spot or that little blemish. Such sad news let’s make his name last forever somehow. Paul Francis
Andrew Kelly will be remembered at a ‘Celebration of Life Ceremony’ to be held on Monday 14 May at the Eagle Ridge Golf Club, 215 Browns Road, Boneo. Those attending from a football or cricket club are free to wear their football jumpers or club colours, otherwise the dress code on the day will be smart casual.

The mightiest Magpies of all By David Nagel It’s amazing what you can find on a Saturday afternoon at the local football. Fancy walking to the bar, purely for medicinal purposes of course, and stumbling across this little gem just lying on the ground at Starling Road on Saturday. The game between Officer and Narre Warren was almost over, the Magpies running away with a huge victory – so this piece of paper became a bit of a focal point for the late-afternoon entertainment. The beer cans were placed gently on the ground – and the eyes started to wander. Narre Warren - “The Golden Era – 2006 to 2013.” Very interesting. Upon closer inspection this lost piece of paper looks to be a compilation of the great Narre Warren teams that won six premierships during the era. A three-peat from 2006 to 2008 was followed by a win over Beaconsfield in 2010, before back-to-back victories over Cranbourne put the rubber-stamp on a dominant period for the Magpies in 2012 and ’13. Pakenham in 2009 and Cranbourne in 2011 were the only teams that could interrupt a golden streak over eight years. It’s a streak that left Michael Collins and Nick Scanlon as six-time premiership players, Col McNamara with five, and a plethora of teammates with multiple premiership memories to enjoy.
The Magpies are undefeated after four rounds this year – maybe Collo and Scanners are heading for a lucky seventh premiership – five years after their last. Sorry, got carried away for a bit there…let’s get back to this lost little piece of paper! Whoever lost this document had clearly put in a bit of thought, with a criteria included to obviously narrow down the choice between one champion Magpie and another. Long-term service to the club, short-term but significant contribution to success, and outstanding football achievements – such as winning premierships – have all been included in the calculations. So what did this poor fella, who lost the paper and all the hard work that went with it, come up with in the end. A bloody good football team, that’s what. A spine that includes Lee Boyle, Steven Kidd, Michael Collins, Shane Dwyer and Kerem Baskaya would keep any team competitive, while the outer extremities provide pretty handy back up. Jarrod Anderson, McNamara, Josh Tonna, Shane Brewster and Brett Evans are a star-studded unit on one side of the ground, with Ben King, Kain Baskaya, Jackson Parker, Scanlon and Lee Clarke a quality-combination down the other. And just for good measure, ruckman Steve Watson has Collins, Brendan Kimber and Ricky Clarke as the three targets for his ruckwork. Very handy indeed.

But the probably the biggest indication of the quality we’re talking about here is the players to choose from on the bench. Austinn Jones, Dylan Quirk, Danny Brewster, Glen Hamilton, Clay Peresso, Justin Marriott, Matt Lee, Cole Harvey, Daniel Field, Andy Soumilas and Brad Scalzo – is there any end to the talent that played at this club over the journey? And we haven’t got to the toughest dilemma of all – who coaches this great team? All three premiership coaches, Austinn Jones (2006/07), Matt Shinners (2008/10) and Chris Toner (2012/13) all had their particular strengths, making it basically impossible to choose. The unfortunate author of this paper, had Jones as his original choice but eventually threw the choice into the “Too Hard” basket. If anyone out there spots a little lost soul looking for a piece of paper this week, please pass on our details and tell him we found it. Gee it’s amazing what you can find on a Saturday afternoon at the local football.
Matt Shinners and Michael Collins hold aloft the 2010 Premiership cup.

Netball Preview Home sweet home for Magpies By David Nagel The sound of shuffling feet and blaring whistles return to Kalora Park today with Narre Warren hosting its first game of the season against Doveton. Fox Road has been kept idle for the first four rounds of the season, with the Magpies waiting for their flash new clubrooms to be complete. The rooms might not be ready to go just yet, but the Magpies will certainly need to be ready to go against the Doves. The Magpies had a tough fight on their hands against ROC last week, with scores level at half time before the Magpie machine kicked into action. Jemma Osborne had a sensational third term scoring 12 of 15 goals for the quarter. Britt Mashado and skipper Erin Clark were also dynamite performers when it was needed most. Doveton has had a week off to recover and reflect on its one-goal victory over Berwick from round three. The Doves were gone at three-quarter time, seven goals behind, before a 17-9 last quarter got them across the line. Hayley Stewart, Chelsea Imanisani and Jasmin Wilson will need to reproduce those efforts to get over the top of the Magpies. But we’ll go for the Magpies to win by four goals. Cranbourne needs to take some positive thoughts into the interleague weekend and will look to do so against laststart winners Pakenham at Casey Fields. The Eagles – only a short-step away from last year’s grand final – are yet to register a win with losses against Doveton, Narre Warren, Beaconsfield and Tooradin-Dalmore leaving them stranded in second-last place on the ladder. But coach Donna Wilson will not be giving up thoughts of playing finals again this season, with upcoming games against Pakenham, Berwick and ROC all must wins if that is to be the case. The Eagles are still chock-full of talent with Tara Cecil (GK) and Allie Oakenfull (GD) combining well in their last outing against the Seagulls, while Alanah Hardy, Nat Sparks, Tegan Robertson, Steph Ryan, Tayla Stahl and Kayla Wilson provide plenty of depth through the midcourt. Hardy can also play as a dangerous goaler while Tahlia Coates had a terrific last quarter against the Seagulls – scoring 11 goals in a confidence-boosting end to the game. Pakenham will be thrilled with its first win of the season against Berwick, riding a fast start to a 53-37 victory at Toomuc Reserve. The Lions came flying out of the gates scoring 20 goals to eight in the first quarter with Kyra Esler (GS) and Taylor Dykstra (GA) making every post a winner under the ring. The Lions gave ground in the second quarter but bounced back to form in the second half.
Bec Kinna showed her class when under pressure against Beaconsfield last week. Katrina Meredith, Emma Jones, Lorna Jones and Bec Langford were all prominent through the midcourt for the Lions, while Jenna Douglas and Caitlin Cooke warmed up for the game against the Eagles with terrific games in defence. Pakenham sit one spot higher than the Eagles at the moment, but that will change after Cranbourne finish 10-goals to the good at the final whistle. Fresh off a great win over Beaconsfield last week, TooradinDalmore will look to continue its perfect start to the season with a trip to Edwin Flack Reserve to take on Berwick. The Seagulls started well against the Eagles last week, opening up a four-goal lead at quarter time before things fell apart in the second term. Beaconsfield dominated play, with a 16-7 second quarter leaving the Seagulls five-goals adrift at half time. The Seagulls narrowed the gap to just two at the final break before showing their championship-winning qualities in the final term. The Seagulls lifted all over the court, with Jess Maher and Ebony Dolan defending brilliantly, Emma Iacovou, Sara Duncan and Tara Smith giving plenty of drive through the midcourt allowing Alex Maher and Jess Cox to strut their stuff in goals.

Netball Preview Berwick will certainly have its hands full this afternoon. The Wickers were brave last week against Pakenham, surrendering a horror start before composing themselves to win the second quarter. They went down in the end but Renee Gill, Emma Clarke, Hayley Alman and Kassidy Withers could hold their heads high. The Wickers will give everything they have once again – but the Seagulls will be too strong. Beaconsfield host ROC in what should be a cracker of a game at Holm Park Reserve. The Eagles were brave against Tooradin last week, leading at half and three-quarter time, before succumbing to a powerful finish from the reigning champions. Danni Cameron and Abbie Sheers were put under immense pressure in defence as the Seagulls’ midcourt gained ascendency. ROC meanwhile was very competitive against Narre Warren, with Georgie Douglas, Zoe Callanan and Mel Overdyk matching it with the Magpies in the early stages before losing touch in the third quarter. It will be same story again this week, the Eagles finishing well to record a 12-goal victory. ROC will need to find a way past Danni Cameron if it wants to roll Beaconsfield this afternoon.

U13 Red We had a solid start against Roc with even quarters until the fourth quarter losing rhythm and getting beaten. Katrina played a tight game in GK. Heads up for next week girls for a full four quarters with determination U13 White Great early morning start for the u/13 girls. We welcomed Delaney, into our team who fitted in really nicely. It was a fantastic team effort today, with everyone playing their roles. The girls worked tirelessly for 4 quarters, finishing with a convincing win. Very happy coaches today. Our awards went to all 9 girls. U15 Red In another tough battle, yet again the 15 Red girls gave a fantastic first half effort, despite having just 8 players. Down by 4 at the half, we needed a strong second half, but it just didn’t happen for us, and we ended up going down by 15. Awards to Paris for her tireless effort and great hands in GK, and Lainey for her consistent hard work week in week out U15 White Great team effort by the girls with lots of positivity on and off the court resulting in a great team win! U17 Red Each week the girls get closer and closer. This week we tried new combinations on court. With so many different combinations available within this team, it is exciting to see where the girls can go. Each week the girls are getting stronger and stronger. We welcomed Alyssa who made her debut in the black and white, after a preseason injury, she is a very nice addition to our team. Awards this week went to Lauren, Caillie, Olivia and Abbey. U17 White Another terrific team effort, resulting in an 8 goal win to Narre. The first three quarters were tough and very competitive, with Narre going in to the last quarter 2 goals behind. The girls really stepped up in the last outscoring their opponents by 10 goals. An awesome win, and a great example of perseverance D Grade Slow start adjusting on court to the loss of our captain Jess, however once we settled, we played some good netball leaving our best passages for the last quarter. We came away with a nice win in the end, keep working hard at training girls, good job! BOC Mikayla, Teagan and Georgia C Grade The girls applied strong pressure and great team to take the win. Our defence was exceptional all over the court. We took the foot off the accelerator in the last quarter which is something for us to work on. Great game! B Grade It is great to see a team play as a team, and to see the girls play for their team. A very defensive game was played by all 9 team members, with each player playing their role and getting on with the job. The girls were all very much behind Jaymie as she stepped onto the court, where she had previously suffered a severe knee injury. Well done Jaym, we are all so proud of you. Awards went to Tamika, Amy, Olivia, Chelsea and Kate. A Grade After a slow start and some new combinations on the court, we steadied in the second half to come away with a win 47-41. Great game from our leaders Erin & Britt. With great performances from both Caitlin’s in our defensive circle. Jemma finished off,the mid court deliveries with accurate goaling. Great team game.

It was a special day for us on Saturday as we got to officially raise our 2017 A-Grade Premiership Flag! After it being such a long-time coming, it was great to relish in this exciting achievement for the club once again, with last year’s premiership captain and TDNC life-member Shona Wells doing the honours of raising the flag. The A-Grade girls then followed that up with a great win in a tough, tight game against Beaconsfield in what was the club’s only win for the day. It was great to get one on the board! Unfortunately, both the B-Grade and D-Grade teams had their first losses for the season after both going down narrowly to Beacy in close games right until the end. There were still plenty of positives to take away from both games, with solid performances across the court. C-Grade suffered a big loss against a strong Beacy outfit but are determined to improve on their performance and turn their results around this week. Despite not getting any wins on Saturday, our junior teams continue to do us proud with their efforts and determination against some seriously tough competition. It was great to see some more young Gulls step up and get opportunities to play in different teams. On Saturday we had Zoe and Tiana from the 15s white team play in the red team, Milli from the 13s get an opportunity to also play for the 15s white team and Mikayla Jones from 17s getting BOC, and then stepping up and playing for D-Grade as well. The girls all did exceptionally well and will gain valuable experience from these opportunities. This week we head to Berwick and are looking forward to another great day of netball. The next social function is Saturday 26 May, which will be a Rubik’s Cube night at the Tooradin Sports Club, so make sure you come along for a fun night out. Finally, we’d like to give a big shout out to all our netball mums and wish them a very Happy Mother’s Day. We hope you all get spoilt by your littler netballers in appreciation for the many trips to training and cold, winter Saturday mornings watching on the sidelines. GO SEAGULLS!!

Netball Notes Beaconsfield A GRADE - Knowing this week was our biggest test, we entered with a number of goals to meet. An unfamiliar side, the girls had a slow start, 5goals down as they adjusted to Tooradin’s well drilled side. However an exceptional 2nd qtr led by Ash & Rylee in attack, & Kaela & Dani in defence, saw an 11goal turn around in our favour. However the team experience of Tooradin in the final qtr got them across the line as we failed to convert some crucial pieces of play against their intense defence. The standard of the game was exceptional on both sides & we look forward to taking the court against Tooradin later in the year. Awards-Ash, Kaela, Rylee & Dani B GRADE - Beacy hit the road to take on Tooradin. Having come off a 1goal loss to Narre, it was important for the girls to make a great start & play with intensity across the 60minutes. The team shot out to a 6goal lead in the 1st qtr thanks to some great defensive pressure over the shot from Caity & Tenielle. Inside the shooting circle, goalers Mia & Elise worked tirelessly under some trying conditions with strong one-on-one defence from the Gulls. The girls maintained their composure & never gave up the lead through to the final whistle. Awards–Tenielle, Elise & Mia C GRADE - Even though we had a slow start, the girls managed to bounce back & came away with a fantastic win. Zara demonstrated just how versatile she is by dominating in the goal circle, combining nicely with Dani. A major highlight was our last qtr, Bec & Vicki managed to keep the Tooradin shooters goalless. Awards: Zara, Poss & Vicki D GRADE - This week we travelled down to Tooradin. The girls played another great game, managing to come away with a close 25-23 win. The girls being able to run out 4 consistent qtrs was just one of the many positives we can take out of this game. A massive thankyou to Kasey & Bree who were an integral part of our win with our 2 main shooters being away. The girls never looked out of place & both played an outstanding game 15 RED - This game was successful on many counts. The girls displayed patches of very well controlled play & dominated in all areas of the court. The team is beginning to display this on a consistent basis & as a result building obvious confidence. Once again, the diversity of the team was put to rest, & it payed off. How lucky to have numerous players able to play multiple positions, while others hold strong in either in the defence, centre court or attacking end. Awards: Tiahn, Maddi & Abbey 15 WHITE - U15 White controlled the game against Tooradin from start to finish. It was awesome to watch some of the things we’ve been working on at training put out on court! Amazing efforts by all girls, they definitely made it hard to pick awards. Awards: Lauren, Darcy & Charlie. Thankyou to Sammi for coming up & helping us out for the game!

13 RED - We had a strong start to the game, with some great connections down the court. Though at times we struggled with court balance & game structures, we were never really challenged. Goalers were great & our defensive pressure was excellent. Always plenty to work on but they played out the full 4 qtrs with 100% intensity to come away with a strong win. Awards: Kyana & Tiarna 13 WHITE - We had an excellent game against Tooradin this week coming away with a 39point win. All the girls played their roles beautifully & implemented the defensive work we focused on at training. After a scrappy 3rd qtr it was great to see the girls turn it around & lift the intensity for the final qtr. Awards- Sophie, Ella & Ebony

The junior teams started off our campaign strongly with the Under 13 Reds winning 27 to 14 in a match displaying great teamwork from all players – BOC: Ash. The 13 Whites also kicked the day off with a 27 to 4 win over Tooradin – BOC: Kiara. Both 15 sides also produced resounding wins – The Reds winning 46 to 8 with BOC going to: Uaina & Chloe and the Whites winning with an amazing score of 71 to 5 – BOC: Everyone. Our 17’s continued our winning form with the Whites winning 41 to 16 – BOC: Tiarna and our Red team convincing winners 55 to 14 – BOC: Chelsea Morris, with a special mention to Tahlia Coates for an outstanding effort of 37 goals at 80% accuracy. Unfortunately our Senior Teams could not repeat the success of our Juniors this round with D Grade losing to a very determined Tooradin team 25 to 9 – BOC: Kristy. C Grade had the crowd on the edge of their seats, playing in the nail biter of the day, they fought out the match valiantly, only to lose by 1 goal in the dying seconds of the game, final score was 31 to 30 – BOC: Jenna. B Grade lost 32 to 46 BOC: Yasmin. A Grade were defeated 54 to 33 in a tough game BOC: Allie & Tara. Thank you to Boost Juice Cranbourne for sponsoring our Junior BOC Awards and Laser Clinic Cranbourne, sponsor of our Senior BOC Awards. Congratulations to all our players who demonstrated the ANZAC spirit of team work and fair play throughout the day, the Club is proud of you all. Thank you to Tooradin for hosting a great day and it was also fantastic to see all of our teams participate in the two ANZAC Day Ceremonies organised by Tooradin, standing arm in arm, side by side to pay their respects and remember and honour those great service men & women. Lest We Forget. Today we take on Pakenham at Casey Fields for Round 5, which is Pink Round, to promote Breast Cancer awareness and raise money in support of this. Please make sure you do your part by buying a raffle ticket or two for your chance to win one of our wonderful hampers and help support the Breast Cancer Network. The Club will also be holding a Bake Sale today with loads of delicious goodies on offer for you to purchase. Thank you to all our members who have donated items for these awesome hampers, cooked treats for the Bake Sale and to Clare Pollock & Bec St Mart for organising these great fundraisers for such a worthy cause. Let’s hope we can come away with lots of wins this round against Pakenham and raise a tonne of money for the Breast Cancer Network. GO EAGLES!

Doveton This week we head to Narre Warren to eagerly participate in Pink Ribbon Round. It has been a very stop/start beginning to season 2018 (split round and byes) with no netball momentum gained by any teams. D Grade and U17 Red will defend their premiership titles against both Narre teams! The Doveton Football/Netball Club will honour Glenda Charles - an outstanding player and role model in her playing days, who sadly passed away last week. GO DOVES!!

Netball Notes Berwick
For the first time in 2018 we travelled to Pakenham, where we are always warmly welcomed for a great competition. 13’s kicked off the day with some great passages of play both taking the wins on court. Whites felt some pressure with their height being matched in the goal circle and some great pressure by Paky in the 3rd quarter where the turnovers created goals, pegging them back to within 4 goals at the final whistle. Reds got their game off to a great start & the momentum continued. An exciting team to watch so far as they improve each game, continuing the momentum through each quarter they play as a team. Both 15’s also had wins. Whites had a good win with some excellent play at times. Working on consistency for the whole game is our next objective. Emily Guic had numerous tips and great drives all game. Well done on a great game girls. Reds, had another fantastic start, with a great display of teamwork. From the first whistle the effort and drive for the ball was outstanding with every player on the court contributing. It was the best defensive game so far in season 2018, with the attackers really stepping up and getting involved with intercepts and turnovers. Looking forward to taking on Tooradin next round. 17 Whites had pressure over every ball in every position, from one end to the other was the players goal this week. It was great to see the improvement during this round. The girls continue to develop their ball movement down the court , even with some new player combinations thrown into the mix. We will continue to develop and look forward to every week with positive attitudes. 17 Reds are building their team philosophy each week, chasing down lose balls, turning bad passing into great catching, quick transition into attack and even quicker into defense. They have had close results due to movement and changes of players to really expose more than one playing position on court. The team has a lot of improvement still to come being such a young group. 5 out of 6 wins in juniors in another great week of building this part of the club at Berwick. D Grade, got a great start, their ball movement has improved in such a short time. This set up well for our goalers enabling them to shoot with more accuracy. Working on fitness and maintaining our intensity for a full game is on our agenda. C Grade cracked the first senior win for the wickers this week. What a great feeling and sight watching the girls work hard and their persistence finally paid off. Despite the wind and BNC trailing all game, everyone worked hard and stayed focused and did everything that was asked of them. Special mention to Sarah O for the best game we have seen her play. Multiple deflections and intercepts were a key to our win. The B Grade team nearly snatched a win from excellent conversion of defensive turnovers with Joyce Oyay offering lots of opportunity in the Goal Circle & taking some fantastic passes over much more experienced defenders. Larri Alman being the General of the back line disrupting with her great defence. Note for Shona & Melly
38
on some fantastic attacking play. The team needs to build further on this now they can taste a win, really putting together 4 quarters of netball. A Grade team missed two key players in mid court but not that the 12 goals they were chasing in the first quarter didn’t help them towards a win. The fight over the next 3 quarters improved only giving them 6 goals but the margin just couldn’t be pulled back. The team has a tough battle on Saturday playing the top team but we need to focus on winning quarter by quarter and keeping the energy up.

Newcomers put up a brave fight By Lachlan Ramage The long wait is finally over with round one of season two in South Eastern Women’s Football seeing the new girls on the block Pakenham Lions fight it out in a gallant first game. The new girls of Division-3 didn’t have the greatest of starts, with the Officer Kangaroos jumping out to a 36-point quarter-time lead. But the Lions then held the Kangaroos to only two goals in the second quarter before they went on to win the third quarter booting their first ever goal, to go with four points. The Kangaroos then went on to kick final quarter goals to run away with the game but the Lions should be pretty happy with their first match in the league. The Seaford Tigers started their season with an impressive 149-point win, while Mornington also got its season started by defeating Pearcedale in a tight contest and Hastings reigned supreme over Karingal. Cerberus/Crib Point, who started the season with the bye, has its first game against big winners of last week in Mornington in what is set to be a tight tussle. In Division-2, last year’s division-three flag winners Tyabb started its season as a premiership side from the previous year should. After being held to just seven goals in the first three quarters by Edi-Asp the Yabbies decided to pile on the pain in the last quarter, keeping the opposition scoreless and piling on six goals of their own. In other division two results St Kilda Sharks won by 14 points against Cranbourne, whilst Seaford defeated
44
Warragul by 43 points and Tyabb had a comfortable 75-point victory over Edithvale-Aspendale. Bass Coast ran away with a 44-point victory over the Eastern Devils. The game to keep an eye on in Division-2 this week is Tyabb and Warragul. Although Warragul lost in the first round they were competitive and will look to bounce back this week against last year’s Division-3 premiers. We also had an intriguing start to the season in Division-1. Beaconsfield had a productive start to its season with last year’s Division-2 flag winners getting their campaign underway with a 49-point win in their first game in the top flight. In other Division-1 results we saw Cranbourne win a tight contest against St Kilda Sharks by 13 points and Seaford Tigers getting off to a great start by defeating Gippsland by 143 points. Endeavour Hills went down to Mornington by 50 points, while the big highlight to come out of Division-1 was performed by Eastern Devils forward Chloe Hunt, who booted seven goals, helping her side defeat Port Melbourne by 195 points. With round one of the season done and dusted we now look forward to round two, where we see two big winners from the opening round in Division-1 face off in what is set to be an enthralling contest between Beaconsfield and Mornington.
